Where is everyone tonight?
THE GIG FROM HELL!!!!(oh wait there's more!!)
by Malek on Fri Dec 01, 2006 5:50 am
Sooooo let's just say I've played better shows than what happened tonite. So we're well into our 3rd song of the night, at a national show mind you, and I break not one but BOTH my low and high E strings on my Washburn. Great. I finish the song making a show of my broken stringness having all sorts of fun and not caring because... I always have a backup, my Dean, and we continue the set. Great. THEN my Dimebucker decides to take a poo. Super. So I simply use the neck pup. THHHEEENNN my amp starts a-sputtering. Stu-freaking-pendous. I finally get it going again mid-song, this being our first show with only one guitarist, and it goes. The preamp blows. All I get is low volume fizz. My Wardead is now a box of speakers and circuitry. We of course had to stop the set right there after basically only doing 4 1/2 songs out of an 11 song set. I felt embarassed at first but a lot of people in the crowd came up to me and complemented me on what was played while it lasted and that sh!t happens. Plus the club owners felt bad for me and asked us back for another national band opener in the near future. So HOORAY for me. I guess it could have been worse. I'll be in the market for a new amp soon. Taking donations....

The Peavey 5150 - updated for pr0n!
by Panties on Fri Dec 01, 2006 3:48 pm
Alright, as everyone probably knows by now - I bought a Peavey 5150 head off of our good ol' forum meber Huxleysghost. It came in this morning.
All I really have to say is that it's got more balls than I do. Sitting in bed at 10am this morning wondering what I was going to do with my day, the doorbell rang. My heart skipped a beat and I ran upstairs to greet the (rather unhappy looking) FedEx man carrying my 70lbs of tone. In my underwear. I quickly signed for my tone (that's what I'm naming the amp. Tone.) and ran downstairs. Plugged it into my 4x12 and away I went. Oh gosh.
I melted my own face. Porn to come soon.
I just want to thank Huxleysghost for making this possible for me. I'm sorry that you felt the need to get rid of it, but one man's loss is another man's... uh... gain! And lots of it!
Thanks again homie.
My new tuner... hehehe.
Got this cool email last night
I got this nice email this morning. Greg plays for the U.S. metal band 'War Within' (great band btw).
His band was on the bill at the 'Keep it True' festival with us last year in Germany. He played some of my Deans backstage.
Evidently he loved them!
Mark,
I just want to thank again for hooking me up with the guys at DEAN. Man these guitars are are the frippin best instruments that I've ever play in my life.
With that one chance encounter with you at the KIT FESTIVAL... it's changed my life as far as my playing forever! There is truly nothing like a USA DEAN and I've had all kinds of guitars in my life.
I am a true believer my friend.
Thanks again, Greg

The old routine of listened, loved, and learnt.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWzVi3mqbtY
Couple o' things I know of already...I reckon the CD is a bit too loud on this recording. It was fine to my ears but I guess the positioning of the camera meant it was recorded differently. Just my opinion, but you can still hear the guitar over the CD a lot.
And I sound out of tune on the opening (clean) riff. Don't blame me, blame the crazy tuning the song is in.
Enjoy folks.

WHERES MY DIXIE REBEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, I finally played a '79 today
Don't think it was a particularly awesome one. The finish wasn't as detailed at it looks on the website, to the point where I wasn't actually sure if it WAS a '79... but it was. Played it for about half an hour, and was quite impressed with it. Bearing in mind this is only my third Dean experience (first 2 being a Vendetta, which I hated, and a Vendetta-7, which was even worse...), so I'm still real new. Pickups were cool, squealing nicely and everything. Also had the chance to strap it on, and I LOVE the way is sits at an utterly perfect position for my playing. I've never had a guitar where i didn't have to HOLD the neck up, if you get me. My Washburn 332 (ML shape) is seriously top-heavy, so I'm just wondering if the Dean ML will have this problem? Also, what necks have these got?
So, I maybe would have bought the thing there and then, if it wasn't or the guy in the shop teling me he can get EVERYTHING, whenever I want it. That, and the fact that there were a few scuffs on the points of the headstock, and a few crack in the varnish at the neck joint.
So, please, put it into perspective for me... How much beter is a DFH of a DOF? On a website here in the UK, they have 2 DFH's... one for £699.00, and one for £2,395.00. So, is one a USA, and one an import? The website used the same pictures for the guitars, so I dunno... I guess that's the case
If you were going to the Silvertung show this weekend..
We had to cancel due to bringing the new drummer in, so please don't make the drive out to Livepool PA. NO ONE WILL BE THERE.
Dropping by to say hello!
I haven't posted in a really long time. Anybody here even remember me? lol

Need floyd installation instructions...
Hi guys. I took the licensed trem out of my 79 MLF and I'm trying to get the original floyd in, but the height adjustment screws I used for the licensed trem don't seem to be working. If anyone has a link I can use on how to install these things that'd be great but I've looked almost everywhere. Thx in advance
DEAN GUITARS RELEASES SOMETHING REVOLUTIONARY... Dec.15
it said that on the home page. hmmmm i wonder.
OK, Striaghten this lx500 thing out for me
I bought a NOS L500XL with the intention of lighting up the perfect axe some day, and I swear I have never seen more chatter about a pup. It's a NOS (about 10 years old, possibly longer) L-500-XL. I checked it out, and it's the real deal and still er, WAS still in the original packaging, but there's something I don't understand...
If they are still made with the original tooling, what all the hub-bub about B&B and the BLUSA????
Here's an excerpt from the website I used...
The authentic Original L500XL in the Original Dimebag Dean From Hell Guitar
If you are looking for an authentic Original L500XL same as in that original DIMEBAG DEAN FROM HELL GUITAR, please check out 4 points:
1. The back of the pickup must have the original imprint from the original tooling in the Plastic housing "BILL LAWRENCE USA"
2. It must have the thin blades.
3. The housing color must be Black
4. The resin in the pickup must be Black and filled all the way to the top of the bobbins
The authentic L500 Pickups are still made today from the same original tooling as the original pickup in the ORIGINAL DIMEBAG DARREL DEAN FROM HELL GUITAR.

Which do you think would sell better? Grill cloth for cab
Hey, I am planning on bringing my avater 212 cab (wiht hellaton60Ls) to the local music store to sell. It has black tolex and a wheat grill.
It looks like the one on the top row, in the middle.
I bought a black fender grill cloth to replace the wheat grill cloth because the cab and my head don't match the way the cab is now. But now I am selling it and I am wondering which one you guys think will sell better? With the wheat grill or the black fender grill?
Also, has onyone ever done a grill cloth change on an avatar cab? I am wondering how the avater logo is being held on. If I change the grill to black I will want to stick the logo back on but there are no visable screws that are holding the logo on. Is it just held on like a nail pounded into the wood?
So, I just received my 79 Z from Blue Rock (Steve is the man!). It plays killer and is a pleasure to play. But I was wondering why the guitar was so light since it was made out of mohogany? My dad has two Les Pauls and they are WAY heavy.
Need a reccommendation for a good book on theory
Hi guys. I've been playing for 2 years and while I know my major, minor and blues scales, and keys and the like, I still feel like I don't really know what I'm doing. I was wondering if anyone could point me out a good book on guitar theory. Not some rinky dink 20 page thing, I want what you would consider a bible on theory. Something that literally goes through everything. And plz don't reccommend a teacher to me, I don't have that kinda dough to spend. I just want a book that will show me the rules so I can break'em better.

what are the names of the original Series of Deans. flame, standard etc. and what is the difference between them all. i used to think i had it straight but every now and then i come across a vintage that contradicts what i thought a particular series was.
i know somebody had posted pics of one of the original catalogs from some time in the 80s
anyone can help me or have more time to go thru the 'search' engine?

So you all read about my gig nightmare right? If not you should, funny story. Well I get to cracking the Warhead open today...everything checked out good, great even not even a speck of dust. Plug it in just straight geet to amp. ok. Add my wah. ok. Take out the wah, add bbe. ok. Set it up just like normal with wah and bbe and.....it freaking works......flawlessly......WHAT THE HELL!!! I'M GONNA KILL THIS &#@$*^% THING!!!! So it basically was just taunting me too. I was trying everything in my power to get it to crap out on me just like the other night and NOTHING. Played perfectly for over an hour. So anyone know what act of God killed my amp Thursday??
EDIT: IT WORKS!!
motherbucker that sounds good!!
i put a motherbucker in the neck position of my ml and man what a killer tone i got mighty mite pickups r better than i thought tons of gain but very creamy im really likin this!! and it only cost me 20 bucks new!!
Just bought a Laney LV200 yesterday
Sounded great, for the 1st hour of so. I switched it off, and then i went for dinner, came back a few hours later, played at really low levels and kicked my Jackhammer (OD pedal) in front of Drive 2 and pfft
nothing
nada
not a sausage
but the clean channel worked fine afterwards! the clean doesnt go through the tube seciton, so im guessing that maybe the valve has gone? ill take it back to the shop and see what they can do for me, but im just so annoyed
it could have been worse, but still, its damned annoying
i was thinking maybe i should change the preamp tube anyways so i can get some more gain out of that sucker, any suggestions?

What are the benifits of a Original compared to a cheap one i have a licenced floyd stays in tune perfect. Are their any reasons to up grade? and do you get a better sustain?

That said...I go a bit down south and what do I get.......the real deal," hey bro get out of here" "Aren't you the kid that used to live around here."
My band blows compared to most...however...we made it back to Rhode Island after dealing with some f-in. douches. I guess now is as good as any time for a poll.

As I said, what more recent, not necessarily new, bands do you guys enjoy?
For me it has to be:

Bullet for my Valentine
Dragonforce
Mastodon
Trivium (I personally think The Crusade is killer. )
Slipknot
Devildriver
I know I forgot some.
I wish there was an instructional video like this
I wish there was a guitar instructional video like this -
Just one rhythm. A very basic rhythm that never changes for the whole lesson.
I want to hear 20 different solos over that rhythm. Each with a totally different feel using different modes, etc. Then explain what you did.
For example, do a nice country solo over the rhythm, then tell me about the licks and patterns. "I started that phrase on the 6th because it allows me to play this classic country run that resolves nicely on the root'.
Then do a blues solo over the same rhythm. Explain that.
The biggest problem I have with instructional videos is that the rhythm is always changing. Wow, is that a country rhythm? And a country lead! What a surprise that was!
I want to think outside of the box. Give me different lead feels for one rhythm.
Need some help from my Dean Brethren
I am getting a Peavey 5150 amp head and I have heard (from Jimmy, thanks bro) that most tube amps sound better with an overdrive pedal in front of them. It is supposed to tighten them up and improve the overall sound. My question is which one is the best? I know everyone has their opinion and that is exactly what I am looking for. I like really tight, really punchy, gain. But gain that doesn't sound like it is on 2, do you know? Here are the ones I have heard of
Maxon OD808
Ibanez Tube Screamer (but which one? I have found 3)
Zakk Wylde OD
HELP! This will be my first time actually OWNING a tube amp in my 20 years of playing!

I really like his style very much - he's one of the best french guitarists out there with Bireli Lagrène
How does this axe play, it looks beautiful and is relatively cheap. Do any of them come with a floyd like the one on the site or do most come string thru. I would love to hear one with some duncan pickups. Could you owners post some pics please, thanks all and take care. Im still waiting for my 79ml select to arrive and i will post pictures for you all.
Has anyone ever heard of Grover Tubes? Are they any good? They are brand new in the Peavey 5150 I am getting this week.
Need Tab - Anyone have a good resource?
Dean Brethren,
I've finally found a drummer that has the same tastes in music I do. We jammed for the first time last Sunday, & we kranked out several songs: One, Master of Puppets, Symphony of Destruction, Cowboys From Hell, Floods, 10's, 13 Steps to Nowhere, Revolution is My Name & Paranoid. Holy $hit, that's 10! So, yeah, it was a blast.
I'm actually looking for some tab on other songs:
COC - Albatross
Black Label Society - Funeral Bell
Pantera - I'm Broken (I have this one, but a more accurate solo would be great)
If you know of any tab resources (or have these), I would greatly appreciate it.
does anyone here have a link or just a pic of the broken glass dean from the "damageplan-save me" video.. ive been looking for a pic of it and cant seem to find one..
ok guys...check this out.we all know that everyone is swapping out the screw in bars for an OFR bar(i got one comin for my fireburst).my question is......if we all know that the OFR type of bar is way better on the ping floyd, why can they just change the bar to an OFR type bar right from the start?????
I'm looking for a locking nut that insted of the average locking nut with three string clamps fastened with screws but it's a locking nut with three hinged thumb clamps that are connected to the nut that requires no allen. Could anyone tell me the real name of these nuts and more importantly where I can get one. Not even the almighty StewMac could help, I looked.
Thanks

Dave Makes It Official...
MEGADETH Mainman Officially Announces Split With ESP GUITARS - Dec. 6, 2006
MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has issued the following statement:
"After two successful years, I have decided to leave ESP guitars. This was a business decision and had nothing to do with the guitars or the manufacturing of the guitars, and I wish the staff of ESP, both in the USA and in Japan and Korea the very best of health and prosperity. Meanwhile, I am taking my Classic Metal V, known formerly as a Jackson King V1 or an ESP DV8, and my new guitar design presently known as an Axxion, which was the recipient of the Gold Award from Guitar World magazine for 2005 for new guitar designs, with me. I will also be re-introducing through my new endorsement many special models, including re-issues of my old models from over the span of my career, as well as some retro V shapes, similar to the formerly known Jackson Y2KV or a Gibson Flying V.
"I will make my announcement and be attending the 2007 NAMM show to meet MEGADETH fans and all metal fans, musicians of all styles — especially guitarists, and MEGADETH will be performing a private invitation-only party for only 300 guests and 300 vendors and music industry people."

Does anyone here own this?
Any members here currently own this masterpiece of Czech Caddies?
Sorry to bug you guys to death with questions on my amp that is on the way (Peavey 5150). But this also applies to other tube amps that I have read about...
How do you find out which tubes sound the best without spending a chitload of money? I have read about different power-amp tubes, and then people making combinations of different pre-amp tubes.
For instance I found these statements (5150)
"JJ's in the in the power section (6L6) and a mix of EH and C9's in the pre"
i have a mix of EH's and Sovtek LPS tubes in mine...on their own the LPS tubes were too low-mid sounding, and kinda dull on the top...on the other hand the EH's were too upper-end oriented (great with lots of gain and still retaining clarity).
i mixed them up and now have a good middle ground. i think ive got 3 EH's and 2 LPS' in there now. not sure of the order, but i think 1 LPS and 2 EH's in the first three slots, and an LPS and EH in the loop and PI slots (not sure which is which and the amp isnt here...)
another thing i did was put Sovtek 5881 tubes in it...wanted to try it a long time ago and i really liked the tone of the amp afterwards. still do.
(no flaming Jimmy!)
ok, i just got me a laney LV200, great amp, but the tube died and the guys at the shop replaced it with a marshall one
but i want more gain and less noise from the amp
so i thought maybe JJ tesla or Groove Tubes, but i really dont know guys...and gals
what do you suggest?
Picked up a couple of Reverend products (and a new Tele)
by tdu on Thu Dec 07, 2006 9:23 pm
I haven't posted in awhile. I took a break from the computer and am just getting back to catching up with the forums now.
I bought a few new items during that time.
First I ended up buying a Reverend Charger 290. I am absolutely thrilled with the guitar. If you guys are ever looking for something a little different, check one out. They are a chambered mahogany body with a spruce top....that combined with the P-90's give the guitar a crazy sound.
I stumbled onto a Reverend Goblin amp as well which is definitely my favourite amp out of anything I have owned. I think they only made about 400 of them from what I have read. It's a real shame they don't still make them because they have a killer feature set.
No photos of the amp yet, but here is the Charger AND the Tele I got awhile ago. I call them the Tobacco Twins.

Booster pedals (TS808's etc)
i'm looking at getting a pedal to give me some more output for solos and gear like that and was wondering if any of you cats had some advice.
At the moment the two i'm looking at are the TS808 and the Hendrix Octave Fuzz. I'm playing garage rock (stuff like KISS, the Stooges, AC/DC, gear like that).
any advice would be killer guys, cheers
Is it something about the "Z" itself, or are "Z" owners just not as fickle as the rest of us?
A quick search of the for sale forum... no results. Even on eBay it's hard to find a used "Z." The most frequent used models I see are the ML, HardTail, Vendetta, and "V".

I hope maybe to see some of you out at the NAMM show in L.A. on Jan. 20, where, if all proceeds without a hitch, Dean guitars will be previewing a limited edition reissue of the Emmett Allied Forces white Flying V.

IS THIS FOR REAL?!!!! Dixie Rebel
I just found this on a dealers site. If this is true, I'm out....
WILL NOT SHIP UNTIL 5-15-07
Seeming strangely familiar to most of you, the dixie rebel is a cross between the ML body style the newer Razorback bodystyle. With the rebel flag graphic stemming from the USA handpainted rebel flag, the Dixie comes in at a MUCH lower price point. Enjoy, all you REBELS out there!
Korina Razorback....thoughts?
Been browsing the Dealers forum.........
The Korina Z, V, and ML are absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!
The tone and sound must be incredible.....
I'd love to see(and own) a Razorback in Korina, with the same finish as those listed above. No other deviations from the standard Razorback equipment needed......

Dean Shopping in Los Angeles
Anyone know a good place in LA to find Deans? Specificly Dean USAs. I would try an online seller, but I have to play a guitar before I buy it.
Question: on this forum does the word "pron" mean "porn"?
well I'm curently playing 1 tone and a half down with my Epi SG and I have to admit that I love that tuning
lately I've been learning a few Sabbath songs and jaming on the Past Lives album which is mainly in the same tuning
so I'm wondering if you guys know some other bands that use this tuning ... well except Pantera thanks ...

59' Neck pos. clip
by BFH on Mon Dec 11, 2006 2:40 am
Hey guys, Can somebody who has a 59' in the neck and a dimebucker in the bridge(and a 3-way switch) make a dirty clip switching through lead, middle and rythm position? Clean on it too if you have the time, thanks in advance.
Hey guys, I recently got me a PQ4 and I was fiddling with it this weekend and noticed something a little odd. I think on mine the pot for the input level was put in wrong because the sweep doesnt follow the numbers right. That, and it seems way quieter than my PQ3.
I have the 4 up front and the 3 in the loop so maybe that is why but I was wondering what else it might be, any thoughts? And also if someone could explain or direct me to a site that explains the peak/shelf buttons or maybe just show me an online manual. BIG THANX!
Need quick help (amp cab question)
by BFH on Mon Dec 11, 2006 3:58 am
I'm oredering an avatar cab very soon and need to know whether I should get 8 ohms mono or stereo? I'm wantng to use it with a combo amp for a while but eventually use a head on it. Thanks guys.
Why doesn't anyone ever talk about Dan. He's the frippin man. I could listen to this dude for a million years straight. I think he deffinately deserves more recognition, so I'm going to start pimping him. If anybody has an idea of where to get his CDs let me know, I can't find them anywhere.
Dean Leslie West Signature
I was looking at this guitar on the net tonight. I really like the shape but couldn't help but notice that it appears to be essentially just like my Hardtail without the neck pickup. If the idea was to create an updated Les Paul Junior I would have liked to see Dean use a wrap around tailpiece like the LP. This played an important part in creating that Junior sound (along with the surface mounted P90) which Leslie West helped make famous. Just my POV.
it sucks i start finals tommorrow and i figured up my grades and there isn't really any way the finals can help me in any class , only hurt my grade . I psychology and history tomorrow , i can take a zero on the psych test and make an 80 exactly , i'd have to get like a 94 or better for it to help , pretty much the same story in history. It is cool that i am doing well and all but it just sucks cuz like i said finals can really only hurt my grades.
good luck to anyone else taking finals , just remeber dont freak out if you dont know something , then you'll panic and forget everything . Stay calm and use good test taking skills .

CFH/DFH... Disappointment...
Hey guys.
So, I found a CFH Dean From Hell pretty close to me, and as soon as i clapped eyes on it, I thought it was gonna be mine. I plugged her into a Dual Rec and it was the best sound I've ever heard... Even makes me want a Dual Rec now!
Thing is with the geet is it didn't feel very good, quality wise. The trem arm squeeked, and when it was screwed in tight pointed straight up, verticle. The fine tuners on the tremolo all felt rather loose, and didn't have a lot of play, as far as tuning goes, which made them kinda pointless. You could probably make a semitone's difference, if that. Also, the little bits of tape on the neck pickup were creased up, and I don't know whether that's meant to be like it, for a vintage look, or what. Along with those traction knobs, that have just basically got spots of melted plastic on them. I thought I read somewhere that they were rivets?
Geet didn't play all that bad, not the hugest fan of the neck on her, but the general finish and quality of everything else apart from the tremolo was amazing. I know y'all gonna say drop an OFR in it, and for the most part you're right, but I want to buy something that amazes me, and it just didn't live up to it. Not that much difference between it and the '79 V I played a few weeks ago, just a tad heavier.
Should I keep looking for a better example of a DFH, or are these typical issues that you Dean/Dime fans just overlook cos the guitar's so frippin cool?
My very first promo shot (Dean content too!)
Okay, So I just can't wrap my little brain round this guitar... Some certain things just don't add up in my head!
Here's the link to the guitar in question...
'USA-made Dean ML'
... And the details for this geet on the site are as follows:
- Cherry Body w/ Matching Headstock
- Made in the USA
- All Mahogany body and neck
- Rosewood Fingerboard
- Abalone and Sterling Silver 12th Fret Inlay
- Original Dean V Profile Neck
- Satin Nickel Hardware
- Satin Lacquer Finish
- Includes hard case
So, it's a USA ML I take it? It surely can't be, I'm confused as hell about it... Doesn't look too 'Cherry' to me, either.

AWESOME new Melancon Custom Artist T Koa w SWEET PORN!
by RC99 on Mon Dec 11, 2006 6:15 pm
Melancon Custom Koa
I found this Melancon Custom Koa from a private dealer in Texas at cost so jumped on it. These are awesome gutars that are every bit as good as snotty high priced Suhrs and Andersons… same attention to detail, but TOTALLY hand made by Gerard Melancon, a bassist who builds form Louisianna and is determined to stay small and not go PRS.
First out of the case – this top is just stunning. Sometimes I just take it out and set it up on the stand to just look at it as I do things around the house. It truly looks like an Arizona desert sunset … beautiful flame and golden ruasty mesa kind of colors in the wood textures. I love this guitar!
Basic specs :
Melancon Custom Artist T with all the upgrades.
Chambered Mahogany Body
One of a Kind Flamed Koa Top!
1 Piece Solid Rosewood Neck !
Custom wound Fralin PAF Humbucking Pickups!
parallel/series/single coil split
The neck is a solid piece of rosewood… so no separation from the neck and fret board. It feels like butter .. edges rounded along with frets, excellent fret work – all add up to plays like buttah. The rounded neck join in the back gives much better upper neck availability than the trad Fender block… NICE! (btw – the Jeff Beck strat has this too)
It’s a smaller scale Strat type neck in terms of width and fatness. so very easy to play. The unfinished neck feels very smooth..
The sound is about as stunning as the top. The Lindy Fralins are THE best split hummers I’ve ever heard.
The little switch gives you
neck : full hummer /series (spanky slightly phased Tele sounds) / single coil
middle : both hummers/both out of phase/both single coils
bridge : full hummer/ series /single coil
there is NO VOLUME LOSS when you go from hummer to single coil – don’t know how he did it … but it’s awesome!
You can get humbucker and TRUE strat sounds here… as well as a spanky phasy sounding tele sounds in the middle switch position.
The hummer sound gets a little sharp throaty wood sound from the bolt on neck which is a little different than what you’d get from a set neck .. but I really like that , bein a Jimi/Jeff strat guy at heart. It’s kinda like a P 90 on steroids sound ,… REAL ballsy. So in solos you can go from a true strat neck or middle pup sound … and then turbo it up with the hummer. REAL nice!
The tone knob (OK – you can skip this part Ian.. LOL) is pretty dynamic and you can get nice jazzy tones for octaves and chords when you roll down on the tone.
With the tone on around 5 – played thru my Fender Super champ and my cheapo Ibanez soundtank OD … I can approximate a nice full Santana type tone. That cheap ($40 new) Soundtank, btw – is one of my prized “Tom” secret weapons. It’s VERY mid rangy – so when playin my 64 Strat ..I use the Maxon OD808 for SRV / Jimi type strat distortion, then for a Santana/McLaughlin LP/PRS thru a Marshall type tone..I switch to the Ibanez Soundtank and roll the tone down on the guitar neck pup … works REAL nice to sound like 2 guitars.
This Melancon does the same .. maybe a little better as the true hummer is on there.
The attention to detail here is top notch.
The binding is beautiful. As well as the inlays – they really stand out. The pup rings are rosewood that perfectly match the neck … VERY elegant touch!
the control knobs are a beautiful amber or carnelian agate looking ... really match the wood.
And the abalone name on the headstock looks classy.
With the absolutely beautiful wood and tonal variety, elegant build quality, ease of play, and total availability of hummer/twangy tele/ soulfull classic strat sounds makes this guitar like a gorgeous Bond girl that you can show off at the ball in an evening gown, and then she switches into leather and jeans and bangs you on the back of your bike.
Physical beauty, Class and ballsy sounds makes this thing SO satisfying and DEFINITELY a keeper.
no for the PRON!!
enjoy my friends :
dealer pic
classing up my living room!
the flame looks like it's exploding out from the pups ... awesome!
like a beautiful mese verde sun rise!
this angle really shows off the flame and wood texture :
tone knobs match nicely

BOOTY SHOT ...notice the nice join
this rosewood neck is a thing of beauty
now THIS booty gives me some WOOD

I finished my pine body Jazzmaster-ish solid
by Blazer on Tue Dec 12, 2006 12:26 am
Well as some of you might remember, I made a body with a jazzmaster shape out of pine which came from the bar of a closed down cafe. I had it lying around for a while and decided to work it out.
This is the way it looked when I last posted about it.
Last week I decided that I had to finish it, I applied a two tone sunburst, glued in a nice vintage tinted neck and opted to not use the already installed vibrato. Instead I installed a toploader hard tail and left the vibrato in for looks and to cover up the gaping hole.
It has a very brash very tele-like sound, a very responsive body with a very light weight. I'm thinking to replace the pickups with Duncan Hotrails or little 59's to get a little more grunt out of it.
I would love to show you guys how it looks but my digital cam has gone belly up.
Which Humbuckers would you put on this?
I was thinking about Emgs or Dimarzio.
I play both Clean tones and Heavy distorted
This is the main sound i want to get but i dont know what type of Humbuckers this guy uses.

Apologies for the n00b question...
I'm assuming the simple answer is 'yes' but, as I'm fairly new to Dean (I've been missing out!), if I wanted a USA Razorback but with a custom finish - not the Rust or Rebel - can it be done?
I know it will be at an upcharge if so and that there are probably certain things that can't be done due to copyrighting blah blah!
It's just that I recently bought a USA DFH and adore it! Someone ordered a Slime Bumblebee Razorback in to the shop I work at and, despite a Razorback of sorts being what I'd have went for if the DFH was unavailable, I simply fell in love with the shape! I'd never seen one in the flesh (well, the wood I guess!) and it's just sublime!
GAS has hit really hard and so I'm gonna need to bite and get a Razorback!
If a custom finish is feasable then let me know
Mucho thanks
James
This is just a photo of a display case my father built for a guy in New York. I was surprised to see "Squire" on the headstock. I was expecting to see a vintage Strat or Tele in there. Neither my dad or I have been able to make out the signature on the pick guard.

by BTMN on Tue Dec 12, 2006 9:34 pm
I dedicated my 800th post to my mother's passing in early December 2004. Ya'll gave me some real support, internet support that it was, along with my "real" friends and family. Got me through a dark "hour". I want to dedicate this 2800th post to my friends made here "onboard" the internet. I exaggerated when I told Capn Jack I was on 20 boards. It's more like 15. Now what that means is over the course of say a week or so I will peruse those 15 messageboards, be it Steve Vai's, A Racing Forum for a division a friend competes in, or a guitar board like this one. I do spent a lil to much time sometimes online but it's a lot safer than some bad habits can be. What's really cool is I can travel any where in the US and some places in Europe and I know someone I can hangout with and even feel at "home" with.
I must apoligize for Mr. Sparrow Notch-Jiggy and all that he brought here just to mess with folks especially myself. Cant belive he did it twice. I would post EVERY comment I EVER posted on the HFC about him willingly and be judged to have hardly poked fun at him at all. Please dont post any negative stuff about him in this thread. Let that sleeping Dawg lie, PLEASE!!!
Let's raise a glass of something cold tonight and say a HELLS YEAH for all the great people you have met via the 'net and even toast the few we might not like so well. They need a lil mercy at Christmas to soothe their troubled minds and spirits.
Thinkin' about goin' lefty...
I am ambidextrous, and learned at a young age on right-handed guitars. Although I can't perform all tasks perfectly with either hand, (I can only swing a bat or golf club lefty, but throw a Frisbee and write with a pen better righty) I am finding myself becoming more lefty as I age, if that's possible. It started with darts, and now I am doing more writing, and general leading, grabbing for doors, even shaking hands with my left hand.
Point is, I am considering playing lefty. Although there's no major reason or benefit at the present time, do you guys think I could successfully switch over? Perhaps even be as proficient?
Does anyone have experience with this book? 'Serious Guitar'

My guitar playing lately feels like it hasn't been going anywhere and I want to expand my knowledge of music in general. This seems like a pretty good resource for that, it definitely seems to go over everything I could ever want it to. I've also heard some good things about the Guitar Grimoire series. Anyway, if anyone has any experience or insight in this kind of thing I'd greatly appreciate it, thx.

affordable guitar painters?
by Büdda on Wed Dec 13, 2006 5:45 pm
SO is there any guitar painters out there with affordable prices? I have talked to a few guys already and they seem overpriced. I understand a good pro looking custom paint job cost a bit, but damn, 9 hundred dollars for the paint job alone? And no, My designs arent that detailed to require "400 hours of airbrushing- which constitues the high price"
God I wish Jeep was available.... I have two killer designs I need done, and all I can find are hack artists and the ones that expect to get rich off thier next paint job. Guess I better learn how to airbrush!
Question for Vintage Owners
I was curious how the TC ML's rank against the 80-81's. From what I understand, the vintages varied greatly in neck size/shape, but how about overall build quality and playability? I'm not sure whether I want to save up and get a used TC, or just wait for a decent vintage. I'm more concerned with having a great playing guitar than a pretty one, and I'd like to think of it as a reasonable investment if I wanted to ever sell it. I know new TC's lose their value quick, but you think in the future the used price will remain about the same, or continue to drop?
Hardtail Select Vibrato - Grovers needed
Anyone know of a place to get replacement tuners for a Hardtail Select Vibrato?
They're Grover self-locking tuners, but current production Grovers have a taller post. the taller post changes the angle of the strings over the nut and puts the two E strings at a nearly flat angle.
Grover has none of the older tuners left.
And eBay is a crapshoot. Who knows if anything is chrome or nickel or the right height until you've bought it and have it in your hands?
And, for what it's worth, I had always thought that the hardware on these Hardtail Selects was chrome, and that it had been mislabeled as nickel.
When I got the taller post Grovers, which are chrome, it was obvious that the hardware on the HS is unquestionably nickel.
Pretty cool!

Peavey triple x
by Deformed on Fri Dec 15, 2006 12:26 am
A friend of mine has got a triple xxx, and it doesn't sound the way it's supposed, or at least I think so It's too harsh and lacks bottom, so i figured it might be the tubes or the bias. The amp has connectors to measure the bias, like in the randall RM100, but it doesn't say how to use it. When i plugged in my multimeter it read 20mA, which is really cold for 6l6gc. However, it could be one of those where you have to measure something on the amp, and then have to recalculate something to get the actual bias, like in the Herbert. So, anyone know how to do this? In the manual it says "biasing must be done by an amp tech", instead of actually explaining the procedure which the RM100-manual does.
Could the problem be related to a bias which is too cold? The amp sounds rather dull, thin and crappy in its current state, so it would be good with some pointers!

Question about the Randall X2
I'm looking at getting a new amp that has some real chunk and good overall sound and quality.. i'm checking out an X2 on ebay, but i've never heard one myself..
as much as i like Dime's music..i dont want HIS sound. Is the X2, TOO identical to his sound? or is it easy to just turn some knobs and stay away from sounding so similiar and still have a sweet tone?
So. I usually buy GHS Boomers .10-.46 at Wal-Mart. But the other day I bought some Ernie Ball Super Slinkys 9-42.
So i've had the guitar for 2 1/2 months and I used 10's, but then put on the 9's. The 9's keep slipping out of tune. Is this because they are a lighter gauge?
I'm going back to 10's, anyways.

Woohoo! Finally get to order stock for the shop I work at!
This week/month/quarter/however long it is until I next get to do this is the Dean order.
As a Saturday person (although, I do alot during the week when not at Uni etc. so yeah ) I feel quite 'proud' that I've been put in charge of sorting which Deans we order in.
I put it simply to my boss - the Dime models WILL sell. He replied with "Well, it's your call."
I've to shortlist about 12 (so naturally, for safety, I have listed 15 ). Most likely we'll be taking in about 8 or 10 at the moment.
The instructions I was given were:
Nothing over £1000 (yet atleast, see how this batch does first), around about 3 - possibly 4 - of the nearer £1000 models and to keep to the 'crazier' shapes e.g. no Hardtails or Cadillacs.
Here's the list I compiled. I've put them in order of priority. I tried to determine that by getting a sort of range of series' so that a few different price brackets were incorporated. Let me know what ya think
(Note:- There is no FBD in the list as I don't wanna have them ALL as Dime models, so thought that a normal ML would be more fitting. Also, someone ordered a Slime Bumblebee but is a dodgy character so there is a good chance that the one that was specially ordered will end up on the wall, hence my reason for not having one in the list ):
Dime-O-Flame ML
Razorback Two Tone
Dixie Rebel
79 Braziliaburst ML
79 Cherry Sunburst V
79 Black Z
Dimeblade
Razorback Explosion
79 White V
ML Noir
Braziliaburst ZX
Black Gold Z
CFH (Lightning Bolt)
Black Gold V
Black Gold ML
My Explosion RazorBack Issue
...
I don't if this was posted before, but I thought it was cool so what the hell.

Kind of a long read, but the dude is right! Made me feel like a dick though.
Okay, so at the moment I'm using 10 to 46 and I'm tuning the whole guitar to D, and sometimes drop C and it sounds fine.
I was wondering what gauge string would be best for tuning the whole guitar down to B, and maybe putting it in drop A

Mahogany vs alder bodies.
What are the difference in tonal characteristics between the two?I have heard that mahogany offers better sustain.Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

Solo sound problem
by Goc on Mon Dec 18, 2006 1:29 am
Ok guys, here's the deal. I'm really satisfied with the tone i get out of my amp both on solo and rythm section. Now, the problem comes in the live section when i preform with my band. Basically, the problem is this: My solo sound really doesnt come out as it should through the PA coz the rest of the band just chokes it. First, i was suggested to put more mids into my sound and i did that. I put A LOT of mids in, and it STILL doesn't cut through. So, i figured, i'm gonna get me some kind of a booster pedal. Lanning (Silvertung) kindly suggested Syemour Duncan's Pickup Booster, i've checked it out and it's almost certain i'll be getting that but, before all that, i'd like to hear your opinion since most of you here have a shitload more experience with that stuff! Does anyone think i really shouldn't be getting that one and why? Thanks & peace

Porn, I did this to my Randall...
Was a little bored so I took apart my Randall RG170 ES. I cleaned, dusted, scrubbed and tuned her up; overall great shape. For those who don't know, the RG170 ES is the same as the Century 170. Apparently, Randall renamed/relabeled the these amps at some point. I don't know which one came first, the RG or the Century model. The amp is clearly labeled RG170 ES, but as you can see in the pics it is labeled as C-170H on the chassis, with a bench test dated 4-8-92. Did US Corp buy Randall after this and does anyone know which model name came first, did they phase out the RG series with the Century series? Also for you tech guys that are always talking about capacitors, resistors, diodes, and stuff, can you point out stuff in the pics so I can know what I'm looking at?

Hello,
Looking at a vendetta 1.7, and this would be first experience at 7 string. Just wondering if any one has any pics of theirs and any reviews on this guitar?
Thanks
Matt
Where is Soltero #3?????
I'm assuming #1 and #2 are the ones that Funky Munky got when they bought the Namm booth. 1 is an Amberburst and the other is Black.
Jason from Drumcity has #4 and that guitar looks to be the one that's used for the Soltero ads.
So where is #3?? Jerry Cantrell maybe?

For someone like me, who experiments in a lot of different tunings I could see this being quite useful. If you have used one/seen one being used please reply!
Thanks all

You know most musicians get started to get chicks right?
Look at this...
what are your Predictions...
and what are your hopes/dreams/wishes
My Predictions.
1) Lefty Import Razorback
2) Import Razorback V
other then that i have no clue
My Hopes
1) a new line of Deans basically between the 79 series and the Pro series. called 79+ or 79 select series.
they would be based on the additional level of quality of the DFH CFH and Razorbacks over the 79,
would be an ML, V, Z, Caddy set. all available string thru or OFR
available in all new different finishes from 79s. all flamed maple trans red to black burst, trans blue burst, trans green burst, and trans black burst.
2) same as above except...
the series would be called 24 series...
ie 24ML, 24Z, 24V, 24Caddy... the 24 standing for 24 frets.

Floyd Rose Speedloader Tremelo
So , im still waiting for my razorback .......
but im thinking of replacing the floyd rose in it for a speedloader tremelo system , heard great thing about them.
like 15 seconds to replace a string , without all the tuning hassle and so , (except that the strings , especially over here are hard to get , so ill just have to order like 10 sets at once from the states or somewhere where they've got them )
But will that speedloader system fit in the razorback?
and what experiences do you guys have with the speedloader system?

Another RG100ES owner on the board
I just purchased an RG100ES XP Series Randall amplifier. I haven't tried it yet since it's in Ontario and I'm temporarly in Newfoundland but it has the footswitch and it reported to work perfectly. It is the tolexed model and it say's Randall under the red jewel light. I'm not sure of the year but it probably early 90's since it's the xp model. I have pics from the store but I have no idea how to post them.

Coming back from the guitar shop ...
... and VERY happy to see that their Dean stock is increasing week by week !!!
I spoke with the owner of the shop and he told me that it took him about 2 YEARS to have all those Deans since he has to import them from the USA
... 2 YEARS
it's nothing compared to the stock that some forum dealers have but I'm really happy to know that I'm now able to play all those Deans !
so ... they have a lot of '79 and Caddy models, TBZ, white, black / all shapes ... and I can tell you that Caddies for example were IMPOSSIBLE to find in Paris !
they have a shards, a bumblebee and a 2tone razor
BUT the coolest part of it is that they finally got some new USA models !!!
there's a USA Schenker, a USA DFH, a confed razor and a USA Hardtail collector's edition
...
it's maybe nothing new for you guys ... but I've never seen so many Deans before
the only problem is that the prices are still VERY high ... a few examples:
'79 MLF --> 800€ !
import 2tone razor --> 1200€ !!
confed razor --> 4800€ !!!
I'll still be buying all my Deans from the forum dealers for a while
...
PS: does anyone here own an editor's collection hardtail ? they're pretty hot !
Rik Emmett Signature Series V Limited Edition
According to a Local Radio Station here (97.7 HTZFM) there will be a Limited Edition Rik Emmett (of Triumph) Dean V available, I think they said 100 or 150 pieces like the DFH!!!
They of course say go see it on the Dean Guitars Website but I don't see JACK!
Welcome back Rik!

Well I ended up not buying the Dean Caddilac I mentioned a few days ago. And then by chance I found myself in my local music store and the man goes: "Yo dude, you won't believe what we got in."
That guy KNOWS that I'm a huge fan of Brian Setzer AND he knows that I love Les Paul style guitars.
And figuring that I wanted a little more sophiticated guitar in my arsenal I paid a little advance and if luck is on my side I'll be picking it up next week.

i just saw it on the home page .
pertty cool , me and my guitar teacher just went over some arpeggios in my last lesson . I understand what your doing with them , but the hardest part for me is the actual physical movement of my hand , i have a hard time rolling my fingers on my majors, and i also have trouble figuring out which fingerings i should use to help me move into the next position in order to extend them . (goddamned you ygnwie malmsteen, i need to achive the power of the donut i guess)
I didn't know these guys were good
Finally a new-ish band with a vocalist that doesn't sing like a chihuahua
Wahey!
And they're clearing out all of their electric guitars! The 'guy in charge of guitars' just left, and the new guy they got is really into his acoustics, which means they're phasing out all of the electric's! Rather silly prices, really, not much slection though.
They had a really nice '79 V in braziliaburst (I think, the normal 'sunburst' colour) , with the nicest finish I've seen on a '79, and that puppy was £296! Cheapest I've seen is £400! They also had a Hardtail Select in tabacco burst, I think, for £400. She was a bit hurt in some places though. I really came so close to buying the V this time, it was so nice, but I have to wait for frippin long til I next get paid. I hope they don't sell either, we'll see if I get some cash for xmas!
Others worth a mention was a Dime-o-Flage for under £200, and a silverburst for just over £300. Not too kean on those 2 though.
Very excited about this news, I now have 2 dealers in the same city! %$#@! yes!
time capsule MLs? Ive been looking at them and am very interested. So what price range would i be looking at.
Oh yea, and what does ML stand for?
a friend's building a stratocaster
he's a big Rory Gallagher fan so he's basically trying to get as close to Rory's sound as he can
- strat '62 type neck with jumbo frets
- Fender USA body
- Fender electronics
- Bare Knuckles Irish Tour pickups
- Gotoh pegs & vibrato
what do you guys think ?
especially about the Gotoh stuff and the Bare Knuckles ... anyone had any experience with those ?
EDIT: and it'll cost him about 1100€ ... a lot less than the USA series (not the highway ones) or the Rory relic
Hello peoples.
As you will know, the USA DFH comes with a lovely hardcase.
When I gig, I use Ritter 7000 series gigbags (or have thus far anyway).
I'm just curious as to what there is - of that same quality/level of protection - that is available for my DFH?
Someone told me that the only one available would be an Acoustic Bass bag (Ritter one) but that seems a bit drastic!
I know Dean do various padded gigbags but have no idea how good they are!
Any suggestions?
Cheers very much

It has been said Dean does not use "real" mahogany; (even in their USA's) it is further implied that only the Czech Deans are constructed of quality wood. I will not argue the latter, I too believe the Czechs are spot-on THE best quality for the buck on ANY guitar.
Now back to the wood thing.
Dean does, in fact use a REAL species of mahogany. Which one? Got me. Is it possible my guitar was built from old stock as a custom? Possibly. Is it used on every guitar, probably not...
The FACT here is this...
Stamped into the HS is the word DEAN, and this is 100% mahogany. Check the grain, especially the neck - the scale adds to its cred - 10.5lbs. Recently, an unfortunate accident occurred chipping (immediately repaired) a piece of clear revealing - the wood is not stained at all, she really is that color underneath the clear gloss.

How to get Metallica & Pantera sound
by Andi on Sun Dec 24, 2006 7:49 pm
In Marshall MGHDFX100 & MG412A?
Do you have any good settings to get Metallica or Pantera sound?
Original Floyd Rose -- UK Dealers?
So, I've found it in certain places for around £160... anyone know where I can find it cheaper? Basically, and OFR would be real nice, but I hear the Schaller LFR's are pretty good too? Depends on availability, really, I seem to struggle in this country. Almost above all, it NEEDS to be black. If I can source all the hardware easy enough, I should have me a new (old school) LTD EX300 soon enough, shaaa-wing!
And, of course, any forum dealers wanna throw me a quote, you're MORE than welcome A quote for the trem, a Dimebucker and a good suggestion of a neck pick-up would be extremely pleasent!
Cheers

MERRY CHRISTMAS BOYS AND GIRLS!!!!!
Most memorable christmas eve i can remember......
Well its chrismas day here in Japan and I feel about as far removed from the proverbial "Chrismas" as one could be, but that doesnt mean that you cant have fun. Especially with the introduction of alcohol to the equation. With that said......come along....journey with me as I recount the events on this, the most holy of days.
I awoke at approximately 1130, and Tim and I had just enough time to get some breakfast, if you can assign such nomenclature to supremely substandard quality food, and unfortuantely we had missed the liberty bus that ran at noon. So what else is one to do besides go to the gym and sit in the massage chair until the next bus was about to leave one hour later. Exactly. So we did.
After the short but yet packed "nut-to-butt" bus ride we exited the gate and started walking. We were immediately encountered by several bums and hobos asking for money to whom I lied through my teeth and said I had no change. I actually had about 75 cents and there was no way in hell I was gonna support his lifestyle of laziness. Sorry bud. Get a job. The first place we stopped was a liquor store. Duh? Need I even say that, I thought it was implied. Here in Okinawa they only have one brand of snake on the island and its called the habu snake. They have however found a way to incorporate it into sake. Basically they just kill a snake and set it in the jar and the venom adds a kick i guess, and you get a real menacing product because there is a snake coiled up and looking at you with its fangs all pissed off from inside the jar. Neat huh?
After a about an hour or two of mindless meandering through various shops and other stores that smelled somewhere between piss and wierd fruits we found "New York Diner". Let me tell you that there was nothing "New York" or "Diner" about it. My burger was rectangular in shape as opposed to the good ol' American round patties we know and love. At this point we had are first couple brews. Some local Okinawan brew called ORION. Not bad.
So we kept walkin and off in the distance we spotted a GIANT bowling pin. That can only mean one thing! BOWLING!!!! Hells Yea! Once we got to the alley we were saddened to hear that there was about a 30 min wait, but our determination prevailed and we decided that bowling in Japan on Christmas eve was too good to pass up. While we waited we played some Japanese video games. The only ones we could figure out what to do were the "stregnth" ones. I dominated the arm wrestling one first try and set the high record. Fuggin A! I think the game was designed for little japanese kids with short-assed arms and it just couldnt handle my big american whiteness. The next game was a punching game. WOOOOO! I like to punch things! Who knew that when you are a couple "huge americans" whailing on a game so hard you make a huge boom and make the machine shake that you will draw a crowd. Well I do now. The people that work at the establishment, along with some kids and their parents watched in amazement as we pummelled the machine into submission. I enjoyed it greatly and achieved the high score on that one as well. That alone would have made the day worth while, but no. We arent done yet!
So we started bowling....and drinking.....alot. Yea. Big white guys hauling 15 pound balls down a lane while drinking aiming juice constantly, amongst little Japanese families. They didnt know what hit em! HAHA! Apparently they didnt know what a "high 5" is. Lets just say that they do now. Consequently, the are under the impression that it must come in conjunction with a screamed "YEEEAAAHHHHH!!!!!" So two games and many cans of aiming juice later we left. We thought that was it for the night since we had duty section muster and 7 in the AM the next morning, but we didnt count on meeting up with a couple of our friends about to rent a karaoke room for a couple hours.
Karaoke you say, how can you pass that up you ask? I wondered that myself too. So we all got a few more beers and sang songs. On the setlist was some very drunk and poorly executed versions of Bohemian Rhapsody, Master of Puppets, Paradise City, Detroit Rock City, Time warp from "Rocky Horror Picture Show", and a number of other songs whose titles escape me right now. I also remember laughing so hard at our complete sonic suckiness that I was rolling on the floor and almost pissed my pants on sever occasions. Tim and I then decided it was infact time to get back to base so we would be coherent for duty section muster(what a drag).
So after all that, I can honestly say that last night was the most fun I've had in a LONG time, and was definitely the most memorable Christmas eve ever, even though its happenings had absolutely nothing to do with Christmas.
damn man made a hell of a score , randy you'll be proud
i scored a dimarzio super distortion , emg 85 and two 81s for 150 shipped .
i know i have sorta knocked emgs but the new local music shop had an ltd eclips 1000 with the 81 85 set that i sat down and played for a good while . If not an 81 85 set , i was thinkin of putting the 85 in the bridge and selling the two 81s or tradin one for an 89 or 60 . i like how clear they are even though a bit steryle (sp?) . If i dont like any of them i'll ebay those bastards and make more then my money back and keep the dimarzio sd .
This is pretty funny....

SANTA BROUGHT ME A MARSHALL HALFSTACK!!!! PRON!!!
by dmsdj5 on Tue Dec 26, 2006 4:32 pm
But it's only a mini.....
I got a Korg Pandora which is also pretty kick ass.The little Marshall sounds like crap without the Korg in front of it.It's a great practice setup, and I highly recomend it to anyone.
Anyone here get anything worth while?[/img]
So I'm upgrading my 2x12 combo to a half stack, and I figured I'd need a good little practice amp. Lookin for somethin about 30 watts that I can just plug straight into and have shed loads of decent sounding gain at lower volumes, so I'm probably gonna go solid state.
So there's the Roland Cube 30x or a 30 watt Line 6 Spider III, and they're both priced the same. More I look at it, the more tempting it is to consider the 75 watt Spider III, cos it has all 12 amp modules, whereas the 30 watt has 4. But if the 30 watt will do the job, there's probably no point.
So, do they sound decent, and is there other stuff to consider?
Cheers
Just snapped a Razorback string...
by muckers on Tue Dec 26, 2006 8:58 pm
...and need to know what gauge the stock strings are so I can do a like-for-like change since:
a) I really like this gauge of strings - much better than the ones I have on my Pacifica
b) I don't really wanna be fiddling about with different adjustments when I change a string/set of strings - I want to keep things as simple as possible.
The string I snapped was an A, but I could do with buying a couple of whole string sets just to keep me stocked up for a bit (kinda a fag to go to town to the guitar shop to buy a single string EVERY time one snaps...)
I did a search on the forum and couldn't really find anything specific, so I hope this doesn't sound like a frippin noob thread or something.
Cheers guys!
STOP BEING LAZY!!!
I have found my dream guitar the Dime Dixie Rebel but there is only one problem you are slacking , the owner of my local guitar shop has said that he has had them on order for a while but he cant give me an ETA because of the way dean has been doing business recently...

My geet project(NEW pron inside)
ok this is my first time refinishing a guitar. this is my baby z. i started sanding it down by hand with a piece of sandpaper for 2 hours and this is how far i got. i called my dad and found out that we have an electric sander:x so tomorow im gonna finish sanding it down with that. wat i was originally going to do was sanding it down and prep it for painting because my dads a mechanic and the painters at his shop would be able to paint it for me. i was thinking about lime green but then after sanding it i decided that i was just gonna sand it down and put a clear coat on it and then just leave it natural because it would look sick with the black hardware and emgs that were already on the guitar.
ok sorry about the novel. now the pics.

wat does it mean if a p/u is f spaced? ive seen a whole bunch of dimarzios that are f spaced and i have no idea wat it means
I need to draw on the tube experts here. I have a 5150 that, tonight, starting making this wooshing sound. It is not really loud, but it it is affecting my gain as well. The "woosh" actually changes pitch. Almost like I have a wah on really low in the mix (I don't have a wah BTW) I think it might be a tube issue, but this is my first tube amp and I don't have much experience trouble shooting them. Any ideas? I cannot reproduce the sound when moving cables, and I have changed all cables, guitars, unplugged my pedals everything.
Thanks, I needed a good laugh

Blues Pickup
by Alex! on Fri Dec 29, 2006 2:47 am
So I mostly play metal and blues on guitar, and I'm happy with the gain I get from my Dimebucker, but I'm probably gonna slap a Bare Knuckle Warpig in the bridge.
Anyway, I use my neck for blues basically, and I like the really gritty sound I get (I use the same sound for metal just with more mids, less treble and a different pickup) and I was wondering what's the best pickup in the neck for gritty overdriven blues? Thanks
Is there a difference between the 79s and Black golds?
Besides cosmetics, has anyone noticed a difference in quality?
I just scored a TCML for under $1200 and I am the fuc king man !!!!!!!!
Man am I fuc king kool or what ?!?!?!? And NO, I WILL NOT SH UT THE FU CK UP ABOUT IT !!!!!!!!!!!

ALso, we need more announcements and fuc king stickies here too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
..does anyone remember that practice tool....
...it was like a mini guitar neck, only about 6 frets long...I remember ads for it waaay back (Oz Fox used to be a sponsor), you basically used it to practice picking and fretting when you couldn't have a full size guitar around.
The reason I ask is, as cheesy as that sounds, I need something like that along with me when I can't practice on my guitar...can't let my chops go south! Something like that will work better than nothing, I think.
Anybody remember, or something similar to it? Maybe a link...thanks!

Century 170 any good?
by JohnC on Sat Dec 30, 2006 2:47 am
There is a Century 170 at my local pawn shop for $200, but i could probably get it for less. Are those as good as the Century 200's?
Hey I need to call on your expertise again, my brethren! I had two EMG's professionally installed into my DFH and for some reason I am getting some weird sounds from them.
1. I am getting a loud buzzing when then noise gate is off. It sounds like when you take the plug out of the guitar and stick your thumb on it. Bzzzzzzzt!
2. I am getting a whooshing sound, like I have a wah on really low in the mix
3. The guitar has become "microphonic." That is how the tech that installed them described it. You lightly tap the guitar and get a loud PANG sound.
I have had numerous EMG's installed in all types of guitars and have never had these problems. The sounds are on both pickups (I switched them) and we spent about 2 hours taking it apart and rewiring it to try and get rid of it. Any ideas?
ok should i get the black gold v or the blueburst v anyone know the difference in necks pup ect??which would u get??

Need some input dudes....
I recently moved into a new house, and the lucky room that was picked out to become my music-haven is starting to annoy me to hell!!
I'm noticing a lot of noise or static in this room that I never had before in the old place. For example, theres a spot in the room
thats prefectly silent... the moment I get into that "Zone" (and its
a VERY small zone) all noise's stop. But I almost to play with the guitar pointing to the ceilling so it isnt an option. Another thing thats annoying is the fact that my pup's are pretty quiet over all
but know, some positions I play in are almost unbearable...
So, any inout of whats causing this??? I did notice that about 1/2 a mile away theres these big freeking Hydro kinda electrical towers... think this might be the caus of the issue???

Just thought i'd throw some Vai into the forum for the hell of it.
Guitar I built (in 5th grade)
If I remember correctly, I made this when I was 11 or 12 years old and on fifth grade. It was about the time I started playing guitar...
I haven't played it much, but it's been on my wall for 12 years or more...
Im looking for a new OD pedal for my amp as my Marshall Jackhammer sucks.
Atm, Im looking into the pedals that you see in the poll. What Im looking for is a good pedal to get a very distored sound even filthier, so something that has good clarity and minimal noise.
Ill be getting an EQ for a solo boost, so thats not what it will bo doing as its main function, but i will use it infront of a slghtly dirty amp for a small gain/volume boost for solos.
Um, What the hell?

What if they Where alive...
i saw this a little while ago and it got me to thinking...
think of any and all our lost brothers, the Axe slingers, drummers, bass players singers, piano players, what ever. what do you think they'd have accomplished by now.
Hendrix, Rhoades, Ronnie Van Zant (and his Fellows from Skynyrd), Dime, Cliff Burton, Bonham...
take your pick.
please this is meant as a positive "what if" type of thing, so go at it appropriatly.
i'll start.
1) Cliff Burton: Metallica would still Rule the World... they would have put out 5-8 awsome CDs since MoP and none of the ones everyone seems to have been quite dissapointed with... instead of Newstead getting on stage with Pantera adn playing "Seek and Destroy" it would have been CLIFF!
2) Skynyrd: i can't even imagine!
3) Dime: we'd be in the midst of Damageplan's tour supporting their second album, possibly awaiting their 3rd Release... also we verywell may be cathcing a Rebel Meets Rebel tour, and even hearing the first trickle of rumours start of a Pantera Reunion...
4) Rhoades: we'd likely have never heard much of any of his 'replacements'... and we'd likely be entirely certain that Rhoades IS infact the Greatest Player of all time... not to mention that Ozzfest would be much better... c'mon Pantera and Ozzy with Rhoades, and Metallica with Burton... tell me THAT wouldn't Rule!
Hey guys, I am in the bay area California for the holidays and have finally had a chance to goto the guitar center in Concord to check out the new stuff and FINALLY got to play some decent quality dean imports amongst other things, so here is a review I wrote. The amp reviews are short as I mainly went there to try out guitars and even overall I dont get TOO minute in the details only because I tested out SO much stuff.
The Amps:
Dual Rectifier through old mesa cab with black shadows on top and EV’s on the bottom:
Well Noting new here for me, I’ve played this amp many many times before and it still delivered a good rock solid tone with a good crunch. The thing that probably made this review more worth while was the cabinet. I have never played through one of those old metal grill cabs and I really like how it captured the rectos sound. The combination of speaker had a great tone to them and the half open back gave it a slightly more open less compressed feel.
Line 6 flextone (old used one) through a crate cab with v30’s.:
Not bad for an instant heavy sound without having to turn up to much. Definitely could tell the digital vibe but I was really able to achieve some super saturated and compressed sounding palm mute chunk on this, perfect for inorganic styles like fear factory or chimaira. Had a good variety of different voicings as well (as to be expected). All in all I was not too crazy about this amp (im not so sure how it would sound next to a loud drummer) but it was cool for my guitar testing purposes. The crate cab seemed to hold up well to the chunk, I think those v30’s are the only thing it had going for it really.
Peavey Nashville 112
I had a great time playing this little wonder box, it is perfect for rich sparkling cleans with a touch (or gob) of reverb. I played a strat through this and couldn’t have been more satisfied. Just very nice pristine clean and you can get it gritty sounding with the pre gain and master gain knobs. This I guess is supposed to be more for steel guitars but it works great on regular guitars too.
Fender twin
Cant beat a classic, pretty much had the same vibe as the peavey only a little more lush sounding I suppose.
Peavey JSX
OK, here’s the real surprise of the evening. When I saw that the sound reinforced room was occupied (that had the mesa and line 6) I looked to find an amp on the floor to test geets on. I soon found a JSX full stack (though I think only one cab was in use) and proceeded to hook up to it.
WOW….this amp totally kicked my ass. I was surprised to find the amount of gain on there to be more than satisfying, but what really accentuated it was the tone. It really had a great organic, crunchy and articulate response to it which made it great for both rythym AND lead playing. I really only tested out the gain channels on this thing so I don’t know about the clean but it excelled in strides on those two gain channels. I was also amazed that I wasn’t even playing that loud for it to be sounding so good ( I cant imagine what it would be like opened up on a stage).
I really have been impressed with this amp and have a renewed faith in tube amps now. I am seriously considering buying this amp sometime in the future but I plan in the meantime to try and test it out more. Again I cannot emphasize more how much I liked this amp and Its going to be on my mind for quite a while now.
The GEETS!
Dean DFH/CFH:
Ok this is real main reason I made the trip to GC as sadly until now I had not had the opportunity to play a decent dean before. I played this on the mesa first but it really opened up when I played it on the JSX. First off, this thing rips. This was also my first time trying out the BnB’s pickup, man, I just love how that sounded, such heavy crisp articulation on the strings for every palm mute, pinch harmonic, and whammy squeal. Felt really light too which for its size is pretty cool, as you can really be loose with it.
The floyd, sadly, wasn’t set up to right and I didn’t have an optimal experience using it but I got the jist of it, seemed to hold up well and take some abuse. Definatley would make a difference from swapping out the bar with a threaded collar one. The finish up close was a little cheesier than I thought but of course this wasn’t one of the hand painted ones so I gave it some slack, didn’t bother me really as the thing played and sounded well. I liked the v neck too, felt substantial and precise enough for my needs.
Dean Dime O flame:
I really wanted to compare this to the DFH and what I found is that it played good but had a slightly different vibe to it due to the heavier weight, c neck, and dimebucker (which I happen to like also). Didn’t get any time on the floyd with this one but I was satisfied with its performance, never really been a fan of the graphic, but its not something I was ashamed of holding and playing,. A good guitar.
Ibanez Jem(used):
I really have wanted to play one of these for awhile but alas, my test was very short lived. I played it for about 20seconds before breaking a string with the whammy bar. Strings were old it seemed. But in the tiny time I had with it it sounded nice and felt nice, but it was used and needed a setup badly.
Jackson RR5:
I thing kicked ass, I played the white one with pin stripes (love that look). It had Seymour duncans, string through bridge, rosewood fretboard and MIJ. The first thing I noticed on this thing is the neck shape, definitely more rounded than my Rhoads Pro that is thin, I really like the feel it had ass I felt I could dig into it a bit more than on mine. The action was set a little high for my tastes but I made it work, The SD’s in it of course killed and the construction was very nice (their japan guitars rule). Overall a great guitar with great looks and feel. This got a lot of attention from me that day.
Jackson DK2M:
Ok this one I have wanted to play for a while as I really dug this new line with the maple fretboards. The one I played was a metallic red (didn’t care for the finish but it’s the same guitar as the white one I like) and suffered greatly from a poor setup. The action was too low and I kept fretting out while bending on the high frets. I could still manage to play it though somewhat. The sound was nice (real Seymour duncans) and the neck was definitely different from what Im used to (had a satin maple neck), but it was good. It definitely had a shred feel to it and Im sure if set up properly would have killed. I must admit Im not as crazy about them anymore, but nevertheless they are still good guitars for the money, MIJ too which aint too shabby.
Fender USA 60th anniversary strat:
What can I say, these were classic (I played two of the same except one had a rosewood fretboard and the other maple) and really give you a good sense of how a strat should play and feel (aside form way too many crappy quality versions and knockoffs). I played the rosewood one through the Peavey Nashville mention above and was just in clean heaven, I was definitely in the zone on this and started playing very bluesy melodic stuff that was a cross between Hendrix and melancholy surf music. On these anniversary models, they have a neat push in button built into the volume knob which does some sort of phase shifting or something and gives you a different sound to your pickups making them a little darker, more full sounding, this was a great feature and I enjoyed using this on the neck pickup. Definitely didn’t disappoint.
The maple fretboard one I played on the twin and it was equally nice thought the maple fretboard difference is purely a matter of preference.
Fender Eric Johnson sig Strat:
Didn’t get a whole lot of time on this as it was close to me leaving but what I learned from playing this is that it has a VERY vintage strat feel to it. The sound was a bit louder than the anniversary strats because I think on these they used a certain finish to help the sound resonate more. It seemed to have a beefier neck with maybe a slight V shape to, I cant remember to well. I would like to try this one out a bit more and try to use the trem bar on it since I couldn’t use my hand tremolo technique on this because it had all for springs loaded on the back. But of course what I did learn quickly form it also was that it was a very nicely made strat.
Gibson Explorer:
Another classic that I just had to play. This was the natural finish one with gold hardware and the white pickup guard. I played this through the mesa which really felt comfortable and responsive. Not much to say here other than it just being a well setup and playing explorer. Very organic crunch to it and smooth frets made for an inspired ten minute session with it.
WAG Ring - Please discuss...
My wife brought home February's Guitar World magazine and I popped in the disc that came with it. Before i get into that I just want to say that I was really surprised by the mag; I like it...
Now there's this product promo on the disc called the WAG ring. I think the Technology has serious potential. From the site:
"The WAG is a wireless controller specifically designed to provide electric guitarists with an intuitive way to remotely control their effects devices. Essentially, the WAG maps your hand motions to control aspects of your effects, enabling you to shape the effects with your hand"
It uses a ring and a base station, have any of you guys seen it? Any thought on it, or the technology? It really does seem remarkebly intuitive and easy to use, I wonder how much it costs... If any fellow members are going to NAMM some info would be most appreciated!
Check it out...

Battle scars
by Blazer on Sun Dec 31, 2006 12:29 am
Let's talk about the guitars we own that have sustained the most damage throughout the years and talk in detail what kind of dings and chip they have.
My most busted up guitar just has to be my 1989 Squier Stratocaster with the affectionate nickname "The veteran"
Everything apart from the body itself has been replaced one time or another. It's already down to its fourth neck and its sixth set of pickups. As for damage, here's the list.
1. Part of the headstock was broken off and I repaired it by glueing on a new piece of maple, you can see the repair because I couldn't get the shade of the color right and the low E string tuner is slightly off.
2. Again on the neck, a piece of maple I inlayed at the thumb end of the first position. A repair of an unfortunate mishap with the beltsander I used to repair the headstock. I used a black felt tip marker to give the illusion of the rosewood fingerboard being unharmed, you can see it but it doesn't hinder playing.
3. At the neck pocket there's a notable gap between the high E end of the neck. The current neck apparently has a narrower butt than the previous ones but it doesn't hinder playing at all.
4. At the same place of the neck pocket a far more serious one, there's a crack running down the lower cutaway. I need to be careful with that one.
5. There's four plugged up holes on both cutaway horns where I experimented with strapbutton placement.
6. And similarly there's four plugged up holes at the bottom of the guitar where I experimented with strap button placement.
7. The most visible thing in the picture, a chip in the finish running paralel with the bridge pickup at the arm end of the body
8. Also clearly visible: there's a chip at the lower cutaway horn.
9. Just below the chip I mentioned is a strange crescent moon shaped ding, no idea how that one came about.
10 two dents on the lower part of the body, not enough to chip the finish but you can feel and see them, they are situated paralel to the middle pickup and the first Tone pot.
11. A couple of nicks at the arm slope at the upper part of the body, silent witnesses of a show where the guitar fell from the stand.
12. A big chip on the back of the guitar around the place where the bottom strap button is, silent witness to one occasion where my strap came loose and my guitar plummetted to the ground. ("Eh, straplocks, what's that?")
13. A message of love from my first girlfriend scratched a little higher. ("I will always be close to you when you play that guitar honey.")
14. A lot of holes underneath the pickguard from replacing pickguards and using a hammer and nail to make new screw holes in order to make a pickguard fit. ("Oh you're suppose to use a drill, blimey!")
Oh if only my guitar could talk...
Your favorite short solos.

Let's name the solos that get us all excited but don't last for hours. The solo's which are a good solid punch in the face because they are short and effective.
"Nowhere man" The Beatles.
Players: George Harrison and John Lennon.
This one has to be my all time favorite Beatles guitar solo. Lennon and Harrison playing unisolo with a very bright Fender Strat sound, one could easily play this one by himself (as Harrison proved when this song was performed live) but it's just that sound of two very different players playing exactly the same thing that makes this one special and of course it ends with that lovely litle "Ping" flageolette on Harrison's high E string.
"Cinnamon girl" Neil Young.
Just one note, what more do you need?
"In Too Deep" Sum 41
Player: Dave "Brown sound" Baksh
Every once in a while a band shows up who are not afraid to show off chops and Sum 41 was once of those bands. Baksh' solo on this track is a very short one barely lasting two bars but what he plays is good and virtuosic.
"Life on mars' David Bowie
Player: Mick Ronson.
Possibly the shortest one in my list but oh so sweet.
"When it's love" Van Halen
Player: Eddie Van Halen.
This one stands out because EVH did one step backwards and played a very simple Clapton-like solo, no fancy tricks, no two hand tapping, just a real tippping-his-hat to slowhand kind of thing, the solo itself is similar to Clapton's solo on "Sunshine of your love"
Finally one solo that was so great it had to be repeated four times.
"Five To One" The Doors
Player Robby Krieger
"She" Kiss
Player: Ace Frehley
"Alive" Pearl jam
Player: Stone Gossard
"Is there any love in your heart?" Lenny Kravitz
Player: Probably Kravitz himself
Krieger had apparently struck a solo so right that it appeared on songs totally different from the one he wrote it for but it works in all incarnations.
Chord progression trouble
Well I'm in a bit of a pickle. I'm sort of a "pick up the guitar and mess around" kind of guy, so I don't have any real musical training (save a few classes that didn't really do much).
Anyway, I was sitting here the other day messing around, and came upon a chord progression that I thought sounded nice BUT I can't find the next chord that sounds right, to sort of finish off the section. I'm honestly stuck, so if anybody has any music theory background or something to help me figure out what to play next, it would be greatly appreciated, as leaving this piece unfinished is killing me.
Dm Am Dm Am C G ...
(insert whatever strumming you like as I can't repeat that on the internet)
just realized that the male to male jumper cable that came with my alarm clock for an mp3 player hook up.... infact allows me to plug my guitar into the Microphone port on my PC... well that and teh guitar jack to headphone jack converter i had... lol...
hmmm... this could be interesting...
Best modern guitar player

This stuff must happen all the time but who do you think is the best guitar player around today?
My vote goes to Chris Broderick. He's just amazing at what ever he turns his hand to.

Peavey 5150/6505
by Alex! on Sun Dec 31, 2006 2:21 pm
I know this is a stupid question but, what are these amps really like? I know Machine Head use them and I LOVE their tone, but I've heard you need to use overdrive pedals with them.
I'm really considering getting a 6505 or a 6505+ for my next amp, and I was wondering if you guys could tell me what it's like for metal? And if you have any clips that'd be great

Here are my questions. What makes this guitar one-of-a-kind? Is it the faded denim finish? If they were made in '94 to '95 how was this on the cover of Deans 1990 catalogue? Lastly, does anybody here own one of these and want to sell it? Thanks in advance.
