Noise Reduction Pedal, Gate or Compressor????

What do compressors do? Do they can silence unwanted

hiss and background noise as well as helping your attack?

Cadillac
by Laudanum on Tue Aug 01, 2006 5:08 pm
Hi all. I'm looking for a case for my ltd. white Cadillac. Yes, it has the massive V headstock. I searched the archives and it appears that the only case that is supposed to truly be right for the Caddy is the Dean HS-Cadi (or D-HS-Cadi). Very hard to find one I guess because Dean is changing their case manufacturer. But I did find one. However, I read in the archives here that somebody said thjat the Points of the Caddy headstock still rest on the bottom of this, supposedly correct, case. So what's the deal?
Did he maybe get one of the older Dean Caddy cases that were also meant to fit the Icon? Or is there a flaw with the D-HS-Cadi case and it doesnt properly fit with the large V headstock Cadillacs?

Insight and advice very greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Buckethead
You are Buckethead! You have played with Primus, Praxis, and Guns N' Roses, but prefer to stay solo. You are quite possibly the strangest and wildest guitarist ever to be heard. You push the boundaries of music, and your unorthodox style and incredible shredding ability, not to mention robot dancing, have made you very popular in the underground world.

LOG lightening up?
by DREAD PIRATE REDBEARD on Wed Aug 02, 2006 3:23 am
I dont know if anyone has posted similar thoughts about LOG lately and frankly I dont really have the time lately to check my spelling and grammar, much less read all the threads in the forum as much as I would like to. Any way, lets get down to cases. I just saw the lamb of god video for "redneck" and it was very suprising. Hot girls, comical happenings.....what is happening. Dont get me wrong. I enjoyed it and I have the CD on preorder its just that the video was way different than I thought it would be. Seems to me that there is alot of Phil comin out of randy in both the style of vocals and the new shaved head look. I aint slingin mud though. I think the song is great and they have enough credentials to do whatever the hell they want. I was just taken by the sudden change in attitude of their recent release.

What are everyone else's thoughts? Im curious to hear them....

Metalheads
by Dim3 on Wed Aug 02, 2006 3:09 pm
Where have all the oldschool metal heads gone? All i see nowdays are these "tough-guy" types who think they're better than anyone else.

I remember a few years ago when being metal wasnt bashing other people, it was about sticking together, having fun, discussing music and drinking booze.

Nowdays?

"ZOMG LOLOLOL!11 i saw dis emo kid down teh street and i BEAT HIM IN DA FACE LOL!11oen"

I mean, seriously, grow the fuck up. Stop being such a bunch of pansy ass posers and learn to accept other people.

Sure, i dont like emo kids either, but by actually giving a flying rats ass about them makes you no better. The ones that do are giving metalheads the shitty reputation it has right now.

Especially all these Dimebag/Zakk Wylde/Whateverguitarist kids. Asking what socks they use. C'mon, you dont have to be like others, be like your frippin self. Geez.

YES, i know my forum name is Dim3. I think Dimebag was a frippin great guitarist, but you dont see me running around asking what shoe laces he used.

The metal community needs a big slap in the face and it needs to wake the 'f up.

First, HUGE THANKS TO ALL THE FOLKS @ DEAN GUITARS, ARMADILLO AND STEVE BRG!!!!

In order to QC a possible issue with my USA ML, Steve contacted Josh in Tampa regarding my concern. He took time out of his schedule to shoot pics on the spot and send the pics right away as she was being shipped for paint. I can't say enough good things about Dean guitars; this build is coming along 200% better than my custom, (which really wasn't bad) and looks like I may just get her in time for my birthday. Turns out, no problem!!!!

As you can see from the cavity, it's a faded denim, but not blue, in pink, and unfortunately you can't see it in the pics but she sportin' an abalone logo, fully bound in cream with cream everything!!!!!

Thanks again everyone, holy cow... HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!!!! (9/25)

Dean Store Help
by Cenobite on Thu Aug 03, 2006 12:45 am
So a friend of mine orders a Dimebag hoodie some 9+ months ago. She get's billed for it, but gets told they are on backorder.
Months go by, still no hoodie. Several emails/phone calls/me asking for help on here, still no hoodie.

Now she's told that the dean store is in a bit of a shambles and cant find my friends order number. They ask for a bank statement, but it's a bit difficult when statements can only be accessed 3 months back.
Then she gets told, "we have them in stock now and you can place an order for one now". An order has already been placed and lost. that would give anyone confidence to shop there again huh? Rolling Eyes

So payment has been made, months pass by, order has been lost and still no hoodie.

Dean Store sounds like Dead Store to me.

How to get more gain?
by dan_plus_o on Thu Aug 03, 2006 5:09 am
I bought a Peavy XXL head about a month ago and I am finally getting my 212 Avatar cab (Two Hellatone 60L's). The cab should arrive in a week or so. I haven't played through the head yet (I did try it with headphones though) so I am not sure how good the gain is gonna be. I am thinking about getting a danalectro Fish and Chips EQ. Any other good EQs I should consider?

What else can I use? Will a OD pedal boost the gain?

I have a boss GT-5 but I am getting kinda tired of it. It is a hasle to set up effects and you can't just dial in a diffrent sound that easy. It has an EQ on it, but I would rather just be able to mve a couple os sliders and get new sounds that way. I use Gain alot, so I want it to be good and easy to use. All the other effects I use once in a while I can get from my GT-5.

So would a good OD pedal and a Graphics EQ work good? Are there diffrent EQ pedals then Graphic EQ pedals? If so what are the differences?

I do have a MT2 Metal Zone, but I am wanting to get a good distortion sound from my amp. Do you think it would sound good to have amp gain at 10 and the MT2 metal zone around 3 or so?

.....YIKES...today, my original Floyd Rose arrived, and the next stop was my local guitar dude!

Here's the deal....

79 MLF Black, with the black hardware installed....replacing the stock licenced trem with the black OFR....replacing the stock pickups with two Bill n Beckys....neck, L500-R....bridge, L500-XL. Wrap it up with black Schaller strap locks, Ernie Ball .9 to .46 tuned to E flat, and a setup for the Floyd to make the most INSANE trem pullups with low fret action and minimal buzz!

So it went in today, but I won't be seeing the results for a little over four weeks. I'll post the pics and a few sound samples when she's done!...it's been in the works for months and it's finally getting done!

PS....a real Floyd is a cool piece of gear to see on it's own....it just looks and feels so rugged and ready to rawk!!!

EXCITEMENT BUILDS.....when I post the pics, I'll post the entire process, and how much it cost from beginning to end. Very Happy ...and props to those who helped make it happen!

Today it is in St. Pete. It has a neck / finish crack that is a hair above superficial but is nice and stable. 14 layers of finish and lets say enough wood to feel it along most of the crack. Nothing a lil glue and clamp wont fix real easy. Plays good with the arrival strings. We'll see what new D'addarrio 11's do for it on Sunday. Porn to follow soon. The digital isn't at home right now. I belive the seller really felt a twinge selling. Said the money wasn't the thing he just was glad a "Hamer fan" had gotten it. BTW, I now understand the Baby$%^# finish comments Hamer gets for it's TV Yellow. MMMM maybe Natural!!!! Why, I got a good mind to...... Well if I'm fixing the neck ANYWAY....... My father just finished up this masterpiece. It's been about four months in the making. Most of that time was spent waiting on pickups from Bill and Becky Lawrence. It's roughly the same body style as his last. The specs: Schaller roller bridge, Grover tuners, L500-C (neck), L500-L (bridge), black back which fades to crimson color, fat Les Paul style neck w/ medium frets. Anyway, on with the porn:

The controls are really simple. My father comes from the school of adjusting tone through the amp...... spending more time playing the guitar than fiddling with knobs and switches on the body. He is, however, a big fan of wiring in coil-splits Very Happy

79 ml neck problems
by Metalmania20 on Sat Aug 05, 2006 6:17 am
I recieved my dean ml 79 about a month ago. Out of the box it was pretty good accept for a few frets buzzing and what not. I took it to get a set up at a local guitar shop in town. So I get home with it after it had been in the shop for about 7 days and it didn't have fret buzz on the same frets as it did before I brought it in just in a few different places. So i brought it back AGAIN! paying more money.. And i get it home tonight and it had only fret buzz on my a string on the top fret. So i thought hm maybe the fact that it's in such a low tuning ''c'' it was causing it. So i put it in standard and then played it and i've got fret buzz twice as bad on the fret not to mention fret buzz on four more frets. And to top it off my 20th,21st and 22nd fret sound exactly the same. Did I warm my neck.? Is whatever is wrong with my guitar fixable. Two times and it isn't getting fixed. I've come to the conclusion to take it somewhere else other than the palce i was taking it but do you think i got a dud of a dean?

I hope this is going to be fixable.

by a6equj5 on Sun Aug 06, 2006 3:32 pm
Been thinking about getting a ML Phantom as my next guitar. The only dealer around me that carries Dean only has a couple V's and a couple of the Dimebag tribute models.

I know my Evo Noir is kinda heavy compared to other guitars. I was wondering since the Phantom XT seems to be along the same lines design wise (black on black, no fret markers, etc.), if it had the same heavy feel to it.
Blueburst '79 Z's???

Hey guys. I'm new to this forum but am a long-time Dean fan. I am obsessed with the bluebust Z's. I've seen quite a few '79 blueburst V's for sale, but no Z's. Does anyone know where I can buy a '79 blueburst Z? I need one so bad! Thanks for any help!

Hahahaha. I Bought some "Lion by washburn" guitar polish and string cleaner from a Target yesterday. And after one use, I have to go pick up a fender polish cloth because the supplyed washturd one is already a linty mess! Laughing

That just goes to show. How do you expect to build guitars when you cant even get a polish cloth right! Laughing

Just thought some of you would like to hear about that.
IF YOU LIKE THIS PLACE PLEASE READ AND PONDER....& POST

Ok,

well, I'm sitting here after getting home from Church on Sunday morning. Kids are watching Cartoons, wife is running errands. I decide to pull out the notebook and post my feelings.

My Name is Jon Kluiter

I co-own a music store in the Kansas City Metro area. My partner in Buiz is a college buddy named Pat. We both spent years in the corporate world, made lots of money and got burned out. I traveled ALL OVER the west coast for YEARS. I was the western regional sales manager for a company that owns Fulmer Motorcycle helmets and a Car AUDIO company called Memphis Car Audio.

I had 14 direct salesmen under me. I flew constantly and watched my kids start to grow up through the window of a Boeing 737.
Pat and I bought an existing music store in the KC metro about 2 years ago after nearly a year of due diligence.

We secured lines and loaded the store with gear. December 8th 2004 occurred and I went NUMB. I was still working full time, but had taken the day off and Pat and I were loading up a penske truck full of gear we had purchased from another store in KC that was closing. I met him at 8 am on the 9th and the first thing he says is "dude, did you hear what happened?"

Thats how my day statted. Many of you found out about Dime the same way. I was and still am a HUGE dime fan. WE carried washburn because I selfishly loved Nuno Bettencourt and Dimebag Darrell. Our paths crossed with Dean only slightly before that. I didn't know much about Dean guitars. I called DEAN because of Dimebag. I didn't know the story behind the brand. I just thought Dean was pointy guitars. I didn't know about the Czeck guitars. I didn't know about Ben Chafin. I didn't know about any of this stuff.

WE brought DEAN into the store because we (especially me) Loved Dime. I joined the forum in the spring of 2005. I layed low and learned. I saw some regular posters and laughed a lot. I really saw something special in this brand. I couldn't put my finger on it.

The more I lurked the more I learned. I began to love this brand. I couldn't figure out why. There was passion in the ownership. I knew Dime loved Dean and I knew he left US music for Dean and Krank, and That is what I knew. I had my eyes opened to this brand and became a DEAN disciple. I love the guitars. I love the people of Armadillo, and the concept that Elliot holds to about customer service. I love that. But there is MORE to the brand. REALLY.

I found it here in the forum. Not the forum persae, but in the passion of the owners of the guitars. VERY few other brands, (especially ones that are only 30 years in the buiz) have the kind of loyal following and passion of Dean Owners. I experienced that first hand in Feb of this year at the DOA. Pat and I went just to have a good time and take care of some buiz with Elliot, Mick and Jon as well as stuff with DDRUM.

I was exposed to the REAL Dean guitars. ALL of you. This like any other bulletin board has its ups and downs. It is like a big disfunctional family. Wink I came back from DOA with a real understanding of the people behind DEAN guitars. ALL of you.

Some get along, some hate others, but the passion for this brand is there. I love that, and secretly wish it was as fun to sell other brands as it is THIS BRAND.

Over the past year I have seen some good people join the forum and some good people leave. I have also seen some people come and go who are less productive in their contributions to this place. Smile

Well, lately I feel saddened because more good people seem to be leaving than new ones comming. I understand that schedules change and people get new hobbies and such, but there has been a real negativity to this community on many levels lately. It really bums me out.

I really like this place and would come (and probably be more active in the forum) if I didn't own a buiz that sold the brand.

There are great people here who value this place. Please keep that in consideration when you are here.

This place is funny, goofy, serious, sad, political, apolitical, religious, anti-religious, irreverent, irrelevent, appropriate and inappropriate, but MOST OF ALL it is all things DEAN, and that is really what matters. This place is DEAN guitars. Each of you who contribute in any fashion or just lurk and take it all in, YOU ARE ALL DEAN GUITARS. You dropped in and didn't leave for a reason.

Please stop and think about what it is about DEAN that you love. Thats what its all about.

I'll start.....
1. I love the people
2. I love guitars especially pointy one Twisted Evil
3. I love the fact that the dealers don't fight and get along with each other.

SO, what is it that you love about DEAN and the forum?

Many people love this place, and many good people quit posting. To me that is sad. I'm sad that they don't feel like they relate any more. I came here because of DIME. I admit that. I stayed because I "get it" I LOVE DEAN.

My $.02

Speaker replacement
by Scrapnasty on Sun Aug 06, 2006 10:38 pm
Well, I was jammin on my Dime Flame today after taking abotu a week off. I was playing to a backing track when I thought I heard something groan or roar.

I turned the backing track off and played a couple notes.

My 15" eminince in my Randall cab sounds like its on its last leg.

I need to know how to remove the speaker from the cab. I tried unscerwing the back panel but it seems to be tolex'd up.

Do I have to cut it off or is there another way that I'm missing.

Suggestions for the two 12's also! Might as well go all out.
which V do I buy?????
by New Breed on Mon Aug 07, 2006 12:52 am
ok guys what do i do? buy a pro v and fit a floyd myself of just buy a tc v with one already installed? anyone who can, let me know how the pro's compare to the time capsules in terms of quality size, weight etc and can somebody let me know whether the pro v will take a floyd due to the bevel in the back, obviously the pro is a cheaper option even with the work and it will be more unique but im still unsure.

you can blame Ponch for this! Laughing

Duno if anybody posted about this, but it came out Friday. I missed it but happened to be lucky enough to find the first 2 episodes in 5 parts on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=search_videos&search_sort=relevance&search_query=metalocalypse&search=Search

I must say, I thought it would be cool, but I was a bit skeptical. I am surprised at how good it is though. Its soooooo funny, the music is awesome, and I honestly cant wait for more episodes.

"Metal for fish. Fish dont got no good metal to listen to."

Kirk and James from Metallica do some of the music, Jeff Loomis among others. I hope it gets a good reception cuz I really would like to see a full season and plenty of airtime. Check it out and tell me what you guys think. Its the 5 in a row that have "Part 1, Part 2 etc" at the end.

Good stuff IMO though. Glad to see metal getting some recognition.

After years of going to concerts, playing local venues, spending the summer on tour as temporary replacement I am starting to notice the onset of Tinnitis. I do not like to use the cheap foam ear plugs because they muffle the frequencies too much.

Anybody use the Hear-Os brand? Supposedly they do not result in a muffled sound.

I was thinking about investing in some in-ears but with only a few more weeks on this tour I don't think this would be a wise purchase.

Tube Screaming madness!
by Rickyg on Mon Aug 07, 2006 7:01 pm
I just picked up an Ibanez turbo tube screamer. This thing is pretty badass! On your dirty channel it will make your tone much more warm and bluesy, if your playing rythm it will add a shitload of chunk and crunch. really sweet. On your clean channel, when you hit the peddle it will make your amp get about 2-3 times louder (and you can adjust it so that it isn't so loud) and it gives you that SRV leads blues sound. It's almost a distortion, but it is still clean. Hard to explain, just listen to Rude Mood, it gives you that kind of sound.

It's got your regular TS9 feature, Turbo Boost, and Hot, so it's pretty versitile.

Over all, pretty badass peddle.

Would it blow up ?!?
by I M Evil on Mon Aug 07, 2006 8:09 pm
So the US electric current is at 110V
and us Swedes are far worse with 220(something)V.

If I bought an amp from overseas, plugged it in here
it would probably go BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM Evil or Very Mad

But if I sold an amp to someone overseas, what difference
would the smaller current do ?

Thanks.

got the mark 3 :D
by j.arledge on Mon Aug 07, 2006 11:10 pm
UPS guy showed up with my mark 3 a little ealier . The store i bought it from did a premo packing job . I get everything un-wrapped and take it to my room and plug everything up . Turn it on standby and get online to find the suggested settings .

pure tone madness . The amp is a black stripe version and the black stripe version i belive was one of the first models . Anyway it has been modded . The had it sent off to have a seperate volume installed on the middle crunch channle so all the channles can operate at the same volume , a very cool plus . Also the amp is running el-34s. I belive they only came in 6l6 version at least until the simul-class amps came out .

It is a keeper , i love it . every knob on the front pulls out except the reverb . It is a little nosie but no worries . It gets loud . I can bearly put it up past one before it gets too loud to be in the house .

I got casters for my 4x12 so i think i'll take it outside and see what sort of tone and volume this thing has with a little juice .

clips to come shortly .

k, I bought a Crate VTX 200s

Image

it has three channels
1. low gain flexwave circuit for cleans sounds or sounds with mild distortion.

2. medium gain flexwave circuit for moderate distortion and crunch.

3. High gain flexwave circuit for extreme distortion and sustain.

each channel has:volume, low, mid, high, and gain knobs.

then an effects, and a delay knob.

Since this is my first real amp, im trying to get the most metal sound i can get out of it, the only thing i have as far as as pedals is a V-amp
Image

so anyone who can give me a crash course on amps, effects, knobs, and all that would be greatly appreciated.

I'm gonna build an Amp
by Canadian_F_H on Tue Aug 08, 2006 1:47 am
this might belong in tech discussion but since it's an AMP thing in a guitar forum, and since i never get responses in "Tech Discussion" i'm, posting it here!!!

well, i'm not sure where to start. i've got a buddy that knows alot about tubes and has built alot of radio amplifiers. i've also found a site with links to schematics. i really don't know what one to build tho unfortunatly, so thats whty im bringing this up. anyone care to look at the site and see if any of the amps catch your eye as a possible really cool amp?

i'm hopin to get somethin like a 100 watt amp. prefereably with the pottential for alot of gain. we also plan to modify it possible with a built in EQ. i aint worried about FX. and half the point of this is to understand everything that goes on in an amp, and for fun. but getting a pretty cool amp outof it would be nice also.

any thoughts?

here is the site btw.

http://www.drtube.com/guitamp.htm

notice that Marshall has a section all to itself on the side...

we plan on looking over some schematics and messin around with em, to get something unique.

Trip to the guitar shop
by atarilovesyou on Tue Aug 08, 2006 7:57 am
Yo!...I'm on vacation and stopped by some guitar shops in Vancouver (western Canada)..stopped in a few shops downtown, chatted up a dude in a shop called West Coast Guitars...talked about some Deans, pickups....he was telling me about how when the first Deans came out they were just unbelievable guitars...NOTHING sounded like em! He said all ya had to do was just strum the thing unplugged to feel the difference. He mentioned they had some V necked models back then, but I'm not so sure....he was pretty knowledgable, had a nice signed pic of Dime and himself from a concert (along with every other major player from the 80's on).

He hasn't really paid much attention to Dean lately, but he was surprised to hear that they're making USA's...AND the fact they have Floyd's on em', since he thought Dean would have thought it was sacrilige!...how things have changed.

He also mentioned that it's funny how the Bill n Becky pickups are sooo popular nowadays, considering Bill couldn't GIVE em away in the 70's!...I thought that was interesting, to say the least.

Anyway....he was an interesting cat. I went up the street to another guitar shop and, nicely, they had like 5 Dean ML's to try! Finally, I can see what a nicely set up MLF sounds and plays like...can't wait till the mods on mine are done!

I notice now why so many like the Dime o Flame...this thing was great....low action, the strings on it were really light and it just RIPPED...no buzz, trem worked great....and the graphic was cool, even though it's not my style. The Dimebucker sounded great too, cranked it through a Krankenstein...pretty ballsy! The DOF had some thicker frets on it too, thicker than my MLF....I really liked the fat frets! If you want a nice shredder guitar, that DOF is the way to go for the price...CFH was awesome too. It's great to see Dean's in the shops, even though the clerk was like, "..they're really popular guitars, but they don't sell so well..it's too bad that the main demographic of Dime fans are so broke!!!"....

...as far as purchases go I finally picked up an MXR Microamp after testing it on a JCM 800...through the FX loop, it provided a nice volume boost, and put in front of the preamp, it added more gain without volume (but a lil noisier, expected)...the only issue was an odd 'pop' sound if you cranked the dial past 2 oclock while it was in the FX look...seems to have a safety shutdown or something, perhaps...didn't do it in front of the preamp though..oh well, volume boost was what I wanted so that's what I got!!!...add 2 Judas Priest tour shirts (Hell Bent and British Steel), an Ace Frehley wrist band and the days shopping was DONE!...ah, vacation....sign....

DEANS RULE...now I have an absolute hankering to hear an ORIGINAL Dean from the late seventies!!!

Anyone try one of the Modular Tube Series Randalls yet?
by tenaflyviper on Tue Aug 08, 2006 3:15 pm
I am wondering how nice they really are.

There seem to be a couple of different models as well. It is at least an interesting theory. I also assume the preamp section is the same on all of the amps. The whole thing reminds me of a THD univalve, which is a really nice amp, for ac/dc type stuff, not for metal per say.

My musical project: Far From Fiction
by Anonymous on Wed Aug 09, 2006 6:19 am
This isn't your usual 'Check out my band!' posts... I have been writing for a bit now, putting some tunes together and getting ready to record. Sounds simple enough? I'm taking this project to a different level so to speak. It's not so much a music project as a big documentary, an art project, a video project, and my personal journal of sorts.

I've started a MySpace page while this is in 'seed' form. Your basic blog entries, saying what's going on and all that good stuff. The school district is building a 'recording studio' of sorts that I will be able to take full advantage of. This studio is going along with my Digital Editing video class.

The deal with this project is (as conceited as it sounds) all me. Vocals, guitar, bass, drum tracks, synth, everything is going to be me. Kind of my answer to Trent Reznor Laughing . Not only am I going to be doing all that, I will be doing the album art for this demo/album. I may even shoot a video for it if time allows.

All this will be documented, a blog will be kept up, and I will probably upload some video journals to the page along with some rough cuts of songs I have been working on to keep those following along interested (and even more so, myself)!

Like I said, this project is still in the 'seed' state. I'm still writing and I will be going back to school in a few weeks to setup the studio and get going! The page is pretty bare with the exception of a few blog entries. I'd really like for you all to follow along, this is going to be a real fun and fulfilling little journey for me.

UNIQUE FINISH IDEA......TORMENTOR?
by Sporkjerk on Wed Aug 09, 2006 10:15 am
Hey guys, I just now got what I think would be a really cool guitar finish idea. I have been pretty fascinated with spalted maple tops lately as I just love the sickly figuring on them, but i have been wanting to see one with a more metal application. Now I have this image in my head of a MLF with a splated maple top that has a clear natural finish on top just how you would normally see it, but then starts to fade into a trans black finish until it is a thin solid black strip at the edges. This along with all black hardware and maybe either a cream or natural binding on the body and neck I think would be a truly unique design. I just wish I had the photoshop skills to show you what I see in my head. I think it would truly be badass.......thoughts? And if anyone of you could cook this idea up in photoshop that would be awesome! Thanks
Demonator Guitar?

Saw Jimmy Herring's band last night - WoW
by Mike9 on Wed Aug 09, 2006 12:37 pm
Man what a tight outfit - Herring is one of my favorite "jam band" guitarist and I really dig his work with ARU (aquarium rescue unit). He's doing a little tour with Bobby Lee Rodgers on vocals, guitar & banjo, Jeff Sipe on drums (Shawn Lane, Jonas Hellborg) and Neal Fountain on six string bass. Jimmy is a wicked good guitarist and really all these guys shine. We stayed for about three hours (1/2hr intermission) and they were still going strong when we left at midnight. Yeah gettin' old's a bitch - Laughing

Bottom line - if you get a chance to see 'em - don't pass it up. It'll be some of the finest guitar playing you'll see this year. He played an American Standard Strat with a pair of Duncan '59s thru a Fender Super Reverb (black face) and an H&K overdrive unit. Herring's the sh!t & that boy can milk tone out of that combo like nobody's business - it was quite an experience.

Environment: yeah there were a load of dead heads and some real Herring and Rogers fans with plenty of pound cake doin' "the noodle dance" to make it pleasantly distracting. I love ta-tas bouncing & rubbing up against me . . . makes me feel young . . . all over. Twisted Evil
Great book - 'Picks!' by Will Hoover
by Jag Panzer on Wed Aug 09, 2006 4:45 pm
I picked up this book about 8 months ago and I've read it 3 times.

It's a cheap (under $10) paperback and very interesting. It's all about guitar picks - history, design, manufacturing, collecting, etc.

It's a good read. Amazon carries it.
three pedals, fighting to the death who will win...........
by ZethTheDarkMage on Wed Aug 09, 2006 7:32 pm
I'm trying to see what everyone thinks is the heaviest, metalist, crunchiest, badass pedal out of these three.

first one
Image
the krank distortus maximus

Pros:
-All the reviews I've have seen have been nothing but 9-10.
-MOST of the Krank distortion goodness in a pedal.

Cons:
-its $150

next one:
Image
the MXR wylde overdrive pedal

Pros:
-It was good enough for Dime.
-It also has high reviews, but not quite as high as the Krank.
-It's $85
Cons:
-It's a signature pedal, i try to avoid those if I can.

and last:
Image

Pros:
-I know quite a few people who swear by this pedal.
-Boss is well known for there quality amps.
-It can be powered by the chromatic tuner which is on my what to get next list.
-It's $85

Cons:
-Not as many good reviews, but still quite a few.

My first gig! Pics inside!

Friday was my very first gig! I officially joined the band "Corruption Of Blood" last Tuesday after practicing with them for about a month. I had a blast at the show playing for people. I was a great feeling. All went well except for when I got shocked by my amp (shitty crate amp that I had to borrow wile mines being repaired) and when I tripped my wire out a couple times. Heres a couple photos from it!

A Preview Of My Band
by Saradilc on Wed Aug 09, 2006 7:44 pm
Hi guys,

On Myspace.com I just posted a preview of my band 'Unconfided'. We normally play Metal, Metalcore, etc.. but the preview is jazzy (we have some variety). I'd like to know what you guys think of it. It was recorded quickly (like 15 - 20 minutes) using Audacity, Guitar Pro 4 (drums), a computer microphone, My friends Kramer, Boss ME-50 and Peavey amp. I find the sweep is a little sloppy, but my friends amp kinda gives off a lot of feedback and stuff, and I really didnt feel like re-doing it a few times (hes going to get a randall half stack soon.)

Anyways let me know what you think. If you have a myspace account add us and leave some feedback, we'd appreciate it.

Thanks

Is it possible to run 2 guitars off of 1 amp?
by a6equj5 on Thu Aug 10, 2006 1:14 pm
My nephew and I are both learning how to play guitar. I'm thinking about bringing my amp home so I can practice on my own sometimes. Of course, I don't want to lug it back and forth every time I want to go play at his house.

I was wondering if it's safe to run 2 guitars into one amp, either with a Y splitter on the cables (before/after the pedal?) or maybe use the aux input on the amp where you'd normally hook up a CD player to play along with.

I was thinking about buying another cheap amp to keep at home, but I'd rather spend $5 on a splitter than $50-60 on another small amp for home.

I'd also like some critique on my playing, on things that i should improve. I'm working on a lead-tune now and a blues style kind of thing so those'll be uploaded soon too. ;|

The songs i played in that clip were:

Okay heres the deal,

a buddy of mine wants to buy a Dean, for the obvious reasons (they rock!!1), and has a Z on its way.
Recently he came across a used ML on the internet for €400,- (500 Dollars).
He showed me the guitar, and i instantly began questioning if this really was a Dean. So we figured, let's the masters decide:

MLX and DBD Tribute ML the same guitar?
by a6equj5 on Sat Aug 12, 2006 7:41 pm
I was in the local music shop today and I almost pulled the trigger on a new DBD Tribute ML when I decided to just think about it, come home, do some research and then go back to pick it up once I had talked myself the rest of the way into buying it.

I was looking online and saw that there is a MLX that has the same construction, etc. as the DBD Tribute, but is $100 cheaper!

What gives? Am I missing something?

Other than the tribute headstock, sticker, and traction knobs, what else is different?

If anyone could post ASAP, I'd appreciate it. The shop closes at 5 and it's almost 2:45 now (I'm CST).

The 1000 Watt Amp

'Nuff Said
Local music store idiot
by Zero Signal on Sat Aug 12, 2006 11:56 pm
So, I drove out to VA Beach this afternoon in search of some patch cables for my effects pedals. I'm boycotting Guitar Center of VA Beach, so my only other option is Alpha Music. They have a HUGE showroom, and tons of merchandise. They are also the only authorized Dean dealer in the entire Hampton Roads area.

Anyway, I'm walkin' around and checking out the amps when one of the sales guys working the guitar department approaches me. I'm wearing my Dean t-shirt, so he feels compelled to ask me, "So, you like Dean guitars??" I said yes. He replies with, "Yeah, we've got tons of them over there on the wall." Actually, they only had about 6. A two-tone razor, DFH CFH, FBD, brazilliaburst '79 (lefty), DBDT, and a used Schenker V.

The guy goes on with, "..and then we have THAT one over THERE..." as he points to one of the Rebel Razorbacks. It's hanging behind the counter where no one can touch it. I mention how much better it looks in person (I had seen one in Tampa at Dean HQ a while back).

Then, the guy makes an amazingly stupid move.... "Yeah, that one was hand-made by Dean himself.... and then they gave it to us. We also had the prototype Rust a while back, but it got sold pretty quick."

I simply told the guy, "you know, you can sit here and bulllshit me about a lot of gear in this store... but you better not try and bulllshit me about Deans." It just floored me that this guy would have the audacity to make such outlandish claims about these guitars. It really makes me wonder what other ill advice has been spouted from his sewer hole at some unsuspecting customer.

So, count your blessings that we have dealers on the forum who are intelligent, well-versed in Dean lore, and respect their customers.
MECHANICAL GURU'S (LAWNMOVER)
by BLOODROOT on Sun Aug 13, 2006 5:32 pm
OK. I GOT THIS NEW LAWN MOWER LAST SUMMER. THE KIND YOU PUSH. ANYWAYS IT WAS CHEAP AT MENARD'S (HOME DEPOT TYPE PLACE) LIKE $150. SO IT WORKED FINE LAST YEAR. GET IT OUT THIS YEAR AND SUPER DIFFICULT TO START. PUSH THE PRIMER BUTTON A FEW TIMES, MAKE SURE THERES GAS, SQUEEZE THE LEVER AND PULL THE CORD TO START. NOTHING. SO AFTER DOING THIS A FEW TIMES IT STARTS SO I FIGURE "WHAT A PIECE OF s#%t, WAS CHEAP WHO CARES , THROW IT OUT FOR THE TRASH MAN AT END OF SUMMER" SO I GO TO CUT MY GRASS THIS MORNING, SAME ROUTINE, WONT START. AFTER A FEW PULSS OF THE CORD AND RELEASE YOU CAN PULL THE CORD ANYMORE. ITS STUCK. SO I FLIP IT OVER AND GIVE IT A KICK ON THE BLADE TO SPIN IT THINKING ITS STUCK. SO IT TURNS IT A BIT AND IT IS REALLY TIGHT. SO AFTER A FEW SPINS IT RELEASES SO I FLIP IT OVER AND THE CORD IS RELEASED. SO I GIVE IT THE OLD SQUEEZE ON THE SAFTEY HANDLE AND PULL THE CORD. SAME THING. WONT START AND AFTER A FEW THE CORD IS STUCK AGAIN AND CANT PULL IT ANYMORE. SOMETIMES IT DOESNT RETRACT ALL THE WAY. THERES GAS OIL AND GOOD SPARK PLUG. SO WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS POS. SOUNDS TO ME LIKE ITS TIME TO GO BUY ANOTHER MOWER AT HOME DEPOT. ANY SUGGESTION ?
Anybody here have any raffle experience?
by deanmaniac on Sun Aug 13, 2006 6:53 pm
A good friend of mine died last month. Drowned at age 21. Sad In any case, there's a big benefit thing next weekend for his family. 4-5 bands playing and the street is being closed down with a flatbed trailer for a stage. I have decided to raffle off a guitar. Do printing shops have the tickets that I will need for this? They will need to have two peices, so I can give the buyer one half, and throw the other half into a can. Then I can draw a winner from the can later. What's a good price? $5, $10??? It's a MIJ Fender Stratocaster '60's Reissue, BTW. Black, with a maple neck. I just wanted to do something, and this was what jumped into my mind. We can't play becuz my brother will be in Birmingham, AL., but I will do a guitar solo thing with this guitar to hopefully make people want it. Wink They are expecting 4-500 people. I would hope to get them a coupla hunnerd bux from this. Does $5 a ticket seem right?

A Dean guitar revitalizes a player....UPDATED - NEW PICS!
by kevphol on Mon Aug 14, 2006 3:48 pm
Yep, a player who had basically put the guitar down for the better part of the last two years and showed little continued interest suddenly found that spark and started playing again in an instant thanks to simply seeing a Dean guitar! How's that for an endorsement!

The player? My 9 yo son. Started on acoustic at age 6. I bought him an EVO hot rod with flames at age 7 and he loved it but soon after just stopped playing. Not wanting to pressure him to play and mentioned it occasionally but didn't press. So yesterday I pull out a different Dean guitar and his eyes bug out of his head and he asks in a heartbeat "What are you going to do with that? Can I have it?" Laughing He then asks if I want to play some guitar and he asks if he can play one of mine. So I hook him up and he starts bangin' out Smoke on Water. Then he switches to blues in E so I pick up a guitar and we jam for about 30 minutes! Very Happy

So then he asks if he can put the guitar he was wowed over in his room. So I tell him after I finish it he can do that, but in the meantime I'll put his Hot Rod EVO and a small Fender amp in there.

So what is this awesome Dean guitar that brought this "old" player back to the instrument??????????????????????????????

A Hollywood Bel Aire project!

Everyone knows dime was into Deans and stuff. But he always talked about how good they were, but he never kept them stock. Why is that? People endorse guitars, but they never keep them stock. If they're so great, why change them? Slash endoreses LP's, but he always switched the pickups. Dime endorsed Deans, but he did the same. Everyone who endorses guitars always changes the pickups. What's the deal?

Effects loop help
by New Found Power on Wed Aug 16, 2006 1:52 am
Okay now that my computer let me sign in, I was given an Alesis Quadraverb, and I was wanting to try it out, so I
proceded to plug it up to the effects loop on my Triple XXX,
and then kicked the button on the footswitch to turn the EFX loop on and it completely sucked my volume down. I messed with the Send level and Return level knobs but nothing changed. I had the Send on the unit plugged into the Return on the amp and
vice-versa I also tried it the other way send to send, return to return but nothing even less volume. When unplugged all goes back to normal (No kidding, right).

Please help me figure this out. Very Happy
AMP HELP
by brn14me on Wed Aug 16, 2006 1:57 am
In the end I'm going to go to hit some stores and try out as many as I can, but since many of you have experience I thought I'd try to get some opinions.

Right now I'm using a Randall RG100SC G2 2X12 combo. 100 watts. It has plenty of power for my needs but I'm not happy with the tone. I've been using a Metal Zone on the clean channel and am much happier with that tone than the Gain 2 (or gain 1) channels on the amp. I'd much rather have an amp that I'm happy with it's tone and can shape it on my own as opposed to using a distortion box.

I'm interested in purchasing a head/cabinet setup.
I'd like to keep the price of the head in the $700 or lower range. (probably gently used) I'm NOT looking to buy right now as I need to research further.

I was wondering about the Randall T2/V2. I know these amps are higher than my pricepoint but does anyone know how their tone compares to the G2 series combos?

Also Peavey tube amps. The 5150 and XXX in particular. Any comparisons between the two? I know it's not tube but any info on the XXL would be great too.

Any other suggestions on high gain metal amps are appreciated. Even if the price is higher than I stated I'd like to get some input on people that actually own or have used for some time these heads.

Also how much does difference does the cabinet really make? I know these are alot of questions but I'm a noob and respect y'alls opinions. I was watching some of the 'post your vids' and realized how inferior my metal zone tone really is! thanks in advance.

Exploding laptops
by Dusty Rhodes on Wed Aug 16, 2006 3:47 am
Don't know if you all have heard this but there seems to be a major problem with the Sony Lithium batteries in some of the Dell laptops. They short out causing an explosion and catching on fire. This happens even when they are not being used. I only mention this because I had these visions of my computer catching on fire when I am out of the house and all my gear going up in flames as well as my house. If you want to know how to tell if yours is one of the affected ones, go to the Dell website and at the bottom you will see a "battery recall" tab. Click on that. Just an F.Y.I.
Have anyone tried Bare Knuckle Pickups????

6505/6505+
by Only Deans on Thu Aug 17, 2006 12:56 am
Ok... I just went an hour in the car to try out amps at GC

I just recently got a triple rec and was kinda dissapointed after I tried it with my band Sad

Didn't really cut through is how I would put it

Anyways, i figured i would try out some more amps and maybe find what im looking for

So I try out some stuff like the JSX, some ampeg amp i dunno the name of, a vht deliverence, and a 6505...

The deliverence had great tone but not enough gain Sad

the JSX wasnt really my style (death metal)

The 6505 was exactly what I was looking for.

Nice DARK tone that was just great after I eq'd it

so I figure Ill buy that and have a whole lotta money for a new guitar or something (dean)

So finally, my question (if anyone has read this far) Whats the difference between the 6505 and the 6505+

what does the extra tube do? AND is there anything better that has that dark tone?

THANKS

Guitar Center in Nashville has new Deans...a Dime-O-Flage, a Dime From Hell, a Schenker V and a couple of ML's.
What's the deal? When did GC become a dealer and how is this gonna affect the local stores that have carried Deans for years? I had always heard that Deans wouldn't be sold in big-box stores because of the lack of customer service.

Parker P-38 Pron and review
by Mike9 on Thu Aug 17, 2006 7:17 pm
This came yesterday - it came in a Levi/Parker Fly gig-bag (better than a hardcase for me) that is so well built it's scary - easily the best made bag I've ever had. Funny - it weighs as much, or more than the guitar - Smile

Yeah Parkers are strange looking, but once you play one it falls into place. This is an incredibly well designed guitar. Extremely ergonomic, light with excellent ballance - it's effortless to wear. The whole guitar weighs 6-3/4lbs. The body is 1-3/8" thick 2 piece ash with a blue/green trans finish that is very handson. That's a really thin body and it's well carved around the parimeters further reducing weight and eased for comfort. The neck joint is one of the nicest factory jobs I've seen - access all the way up no problem.

The neck is very comfortable and stiff. And yes I love the headstock - It's got a 10/13 compound radius and jumbo frets on a tight rosewood board & 25-1/2" scale. The owner had the frets leveled, crowned and dressed so I'll be able to get the action down lower than what I have it now with a little more setup work. The Wilkinson trem is sweet and Parker sets them up to be either fixed, or down only. The trem arm has a large rubber handle on the end and it's comfortable as hell to use. The locking tuners do their job and this returns to pitch quite well.

The pickups on this are DiMarzio as are the electronics and they sound great. I'll find out what they are when I have it down for a string change. This was built for the guy I bought it from by a friend of his who was a Parker employee. The body & neck are MIK, but the hardware is upgraded to USA and s#%t the eletronics and bag alone are worth the $200 I paid for the guitar. It also came with a tuner, 15' stereo cable and a book.

It's a real nice playing axe - easy to move around on and sounds killer!!! I might take a little off the sides on the back of the neck. It's thin enough - 3/4" at the first fret , 13/16" at the 12th. It's a C shape, but I might put a little boat onto.

So - without further delay - heeeeeeeeeeeaars Pron:

Soulfull Oud Player Video
by RC99 on Fri Aug 18, 2006 2:05 am
wow - I just found this on youtube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9tGPTYqfCs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qe51cXxK4Oc

I met Hamza in Berkely back in 73 - he was hangin around w Zakir Hussain and the Ali Akbar Khan music school people, and later he got in w the Dead (who turned him into a pot head and kinda ruined him)

I had already ripped off his albums shamelessly for Afro Arabic riffs to stick into modal trance jazz jams that were goin on back then, so it was an honor to meet him.

we hung out a bit and he tried to show me the maqam and taqsim modes. That syuff is fretless so pretty impossible to translate to guitar, but I learned basic arab scales and stuff off him. he's great to just jam with. He's a very humble guy - not at all the shreddiest of oud players ... but he gets in a trancy afro groove pocket and takes you to a place deep inside.

he's from Nubia which is under water, so he is the last person on Earth doing his particular brand of Nubian tribal music. He now live in Japan where he had been accorded the status of a "Living Treasure" .
they do that there.

I think in Japan that Originals like Santana, Clapton, Beck, Page would be considered living treasures. here we ignore them until they sell out.

for those that don't know
al oud was brought form the mid east to spain where it evolved into al oud....al lud .. . the lute
later to become the guitar.

so this is grandaddy of all blues sh!t!

enjoy

Ok, so there's a metal band around here called Rabid, and the guitarist is a cool guy. Well he has 3 Dimebag guitars, a Slime Bumblebee Razor, an FBD and some kind of Washburn Dime thing. Last time I saw him he let me jam on the Razorback for a few songs and since then I'm been going on about how kcik ass his Deans are and stuff. I tell him I'm gonna save up for one once I get some cash flow and he goes, I don't use the Dime ML a whole lot, you can use that till you get yours. I was like "DAMN!!!". Talk about generousity. So now, I've ditched my Gibson, and am playing a FBD onstage from now on, for now anyway.

Just wanted to say to everybody I'm sorry for the way I left the forum a few weeks ago. It's been a hard past few months for me. I've been having health problems, my band broke up and my job is really getting to be a pain to go to. I've been really depressed and I was at a real low point when I left the forum, it was really stupid of me to make a post saying just "Goodbye" and that was that. I really do like this forum, I come here every morning after I get off work and check out all the topics. I don't know any of you personally but we do share a love for music & guitars plus most of you are crazy so I fit in pretty good! Once again I apologize for being a big poopie head and I hope you can find it in your hearts to let me back in.

I recently gotten serious with home recording, I never really recorded a whole demo. I was hoping to start with my own band but sadly things are slow again on that front, though it's definately not long anymore before the ENFORCER demo is coming!

Anyway I recorded my friends band INCREMENTAL, another cool Dutch thrahs metal act. This song is called "saphead". I used my ENGL SE for the guitar tracks.

The solo is still to be added.

Have some time?....listen to some new uploaded songs of mine
by Travis Bass on Sun Aug 20, 2006 7:42 pm
I just uploaded some new/old songs I recorded from 3 years ago. It was all in one night from 6pm-12am. I played all guitars, bass, and bongos. 2 originals, 2 covers.

I know it's not the best or cleanest or most produced, but it was all one-takes. I didn't overdub anything. Just pressed record and went at it.

So if y'all have time, feel free to listen to my stuff...and add me as a friend if you'd like!

Eddie to the Rescue!
by MZDA on Sun Aug 20, 2006 8:38 pm
Well, my DFH had the Feedback problem. Elliott (yes, Elliott!) actually called Eddie and asked him what the problem was. Eddie told Elliott all about it and Elliott over-nighted a new B&B 500XL to Eddie.

So I got up to Calino guitars and showed Eddie the feedback problem (The reason I didn't catch it at first was because I wasn't playing loud enough) Eddie did the fastest pickup change I've ever witnessed.

No feedback, none at all. Amazing.

I got to see the Black and Red Razorback and the Cracked Mirror prototype, both were amazing.

Eddie is the man, plain and simple.

Thanks Eddie and Elliott for everything.

Bad wood in a avatar cab??
by dan_plus_o on Sun Aug 20, 2006 11:18 pm
I removed the back from my brand new avatar cab and the top peice of wood is coming apart. Its like plywood stuff that has diffrent layers and the layers are coming apart and there is a crack going through the middle. The cab is sturdy and it is not falling apart or anyting. The plywood is just splitting apart slightly. I just don't want it to get worse and then fall apart. I just bought the avatar cab from Steamco Music and I don't want to end up with something that is going to fall apart.

the crack could probably fit 1 1/2 of a CD. My dad says that I should just glue it back together. He is a carpenter so he has that glue stuff they use for building houses. Will that be alright to do? Is having a crack in the middle of the wood bad?

I would rather not send it back because it toke 3 weeks for this one to get to me. So if glueing the wood back together will be good enough then I would rather do that.
New Trivium song for DL! WE ARE THE FIRE!

HOLY CRAP I love this song. For any Trivium fans that follow along with them, you should know that they recorded 2 new videos for their 2 singles coming out.The song "Anthem",is their version of 80's Skid Row/Motley Crue type of metal. It is being released in the UK,today on this site
http://www.roadrunnerrecords.co.uk/detonation/
If you right click the middle of the page and press play, the box shifts over and you can stream it.Of course, someone ripped it and it is available for DL.The Co-webmaster of the Trivium site said that this is only the radio single, but they cut nothing guitar wise out.Matt and Corey have improved SO MUCH since ascendancy.Give it a listen if you don't believe me!

Which pedal...
by Hot Sauce on Tue Aug 22, 2006 12:05 am
Gives off the most brutal tone (and I mean BRUTAL) and has the widest selection of tones? I'm looking for something that can give off a death metal tone, for the most part, but also a classic rock sound for other stuff.

I've heard mp3s of them but can't tell and there is nowhere around here that sells them, so I have to go off what people tell me. I'm going to be running it with a 535Q Wah and an MXR M-108 Ten Band EQ.
Tube amp trouble
by Canadian_F_H on Tue Aug 22, 2006 12:29 am
a buddy has a Mesa Single RectalFire.

after playing a while towards its upper limit volume wise, but the gain not very high, the volume fades after a bit.

it is back to normal after starting playing again later so it isn't accumulating, in other words it is normal every time then fades after a bit every time.

if he toggles to stand by and takes a little break and starts up again then its normal and then fades after a bit again.

i think i have an idea whats happening (something about over saturating the tubes?) but i am not sure. i'd liek a more complete and "semi-Proffessional" opinion.

i remember my Electrician budy saying something about signal breakup and loss when tubes are saturated but i explained that that was the gain guitarists go for and not the problem common to radio tube amps getting distorted (in otherwords we gain heads want saturation) but he said ok but eventually it gets so saturated you don't get as much signal out or somethin. my thought is also maybe the problem is the power tubes becoming saturated? idk half of what i'm saying is based on half assed info i have received in very short convos not directly about this issue so i want to make sure im not confusing anything...

so is this a real problem or just the nature of his amp? does he need to do something, Deal with it, or get a new amp if he cant deal?

thanks for yalls help.

Multi-Effects "Pedal"? V-Amp 2 or RP-80?
by a6equj5 on Tue Aug 22, 2006 3:31 am
I'm looking for an effects "pedal" that I can play with at home. I'm still learning, so I don't need anything that I can play live with. I just want something I can practice with and have fun experimenting with cool effects.

I had a DigiTech Grunge, but I returned it. I guess I got bored with the single effect. So, I've started looking into multi-effect pedals.

I'm not looking to spend more than $100, so I've narrowed it down to either the V-Amp 2 or RP-80.

The thing about the RP-80 I like is the built in drum machine. Although, I probably wouldn't use it much. The V-Amp 2 seems to have more flexibility and more effects.

Urgent help needed, LIne 6 toneport and metalpack questions!
by FretDance on Wed Aug 23, 2006 4:52 am
Hey guys,
as you might have read in my previous posts, I'm doing my official Tokyo guitarclinic this sunday here in Japan.
I will of course be slinging the Dean private stash hardtail (with BL pups). However, Ikebe (the company) would like me to use a line 6 toneport for the clinic, since they have a big promo day for that on saturday, and thinks its agood opp for people to see it live in action on sunday.

However, I have som questions about the sounds.
I have read that you can buy the metalpack, with the diesel herbert (which is my all tiem fave leadamp). Has anyone tried this, and what is the verdict?

I will need to spend 2 evenings now tryign to tweak a good sound out of it (and getting it to work well with my new macbook pro.

SO, ANY help would be greatly appriciated!

I'm getting a new cab
by Metalmania20 on Wed Aug 23, 2006 5:26 pm
I sold my old cab today Peavey 5150 cabinet.. And I've got some cash saved up. I'm looking to order a new cab tomorrow and I was going to try and get some info on a good buy before doing anything. I've got about $450 bucks. And i'm not trying to go over 500. I am thinking music123 or musiciansfriend. I sold my 5150 because i was sick of the crappy speakers. I like a lot of bottom end and chug. And they would fart so the cab had to go.

I've been looking at this Randall RS125CX cab. I don't know too much about it but it says it's all about the chug.

I'm still debating.

Will you guys please give me some input on this and let me know what's in my best interests.

Need help with new guitar
by punkmetal on Wed Aug 23, 2006 8:00 pm
Hey guys I need a little advice on getting a new guitar. Already posted under the Newbies section, figured my post might get more attention here, sorry if its the wrong place... Looking for a double humbucking guitar with 22 or more frets, floyd, good upper fret access, fast neck, and kickass looks (duh). Tried the razorback, liked it. Didn't get a great chance to try the DFH. Tried the LTD Hanneman sig. model (I know its the Dean forum, sry) and liked that a lot, mostly for the ebony fingerboard. The Schecter Synyster Custom loos rad too as does the Vendetta 4 Floyd... Lots of options...

I would really appreciate some input and am open to suggestions on any other models.

Hey guys,

I have been using DR strings for some time, but I recently tried the hex core version light/meds. These have slightly thicker high strings than the standard 10's, AND THEY TOTALLY KICK ASS!!!! Awesome feel and tone. Steve BRG sent me a few sets, (thanks, man!) and thanks to 60's Rocker (thanks Tom!) I scored 6 packs fromMusician's Friend for $3.49 a pack!!!!!! I'm set for a while, these are great. They also have other combinations of light, med and heavy...

Washy review...honest opinions so far...DON'T F-ING KILL ME!
by formula73 on Thu Aug 24, 2006 6:33 am
Since the cat's out of the bag, so to speak, I just wanted to let some of the curious people 'round here get a relatively unbiased opinion. My loyalty lies with Dean, but I can't just count this thing out based on the brand name. It's got a lot of great features for a price comparable to the equivalent Dean, and it's sure as hell not the same junk 333s we're all used to seeing!

Well, here we go! The Dean's obviously not in yet so I can't do a full on comparison right now, but I played a CFH/DFH in a local place the other day and I think it might edge out the Washburn, but it's a killer guitar anyway! Just because it's a Washy doesn't make it automatically suck, y'all. I DO have to say that I like the way the Dean's Floyd sits lower in the rout and I like the back angle on the CFH/DFH's neck better as it lets the fretboard sit flat on the body as opposed to the way it's spaced a little higher on this version, but that may just be because I'm more used to it. Compare a 70s/early 80s Gibby V/Explorer to a newer version and you'll know what I mean. To me, the Dean feels a *hair* smoother.

Ok. Made in Korea, some type or relative of Mahogany 3 pc body/neck, bookmatched maple veneer top w/matching hs. It has a scarfed hs joint like the old Select series, Grover tuners, ebony fretboard with NO inlays, Buzz Feiten Tuning System, weird-but-cool Dime3 diamond volute, and big friggin frets. Nice fretwork, too; not a hand-mangler to be found with a nice, smooth transition from the tops to the ends. Not a single file mark. Black binding body, neck, hs. Washburn Schaller Floyd (the real thing, well, kinda), BLUSA L500XL/ Duncan 59 combo, just like the older USA stuff. 2 volume, 1 tone, 3 way toggle. The only weird thing is that all the pots are 250k. Question Question Confused Confused Question

It's got a pretty good weight to it, probably 8 1/2 to 9 lbs, and it comes through in the tone. Not quite as beefy as my USA DFH, but an ASSTON more balls than the old DimeOFlame. Compared to the CFH/DFH I played the other day, the neck, while a V profile, is softer and smoothly transitions into a slim C shape near the body. It feels nice, but I'm still on the fence as to which I like more. Overall, a nice guitar, even for $999. Shocked

Pron over at my buddy Matt's house the other night.

BEST, TIGHTEST NECK JOINT I'VE EVER SEEN ON AN IMPORT, INCLUDING MY CZECH CADDY. From what I can see, anyway! All the electronics cavities except the switch Question are painted in graphite paint and the control cover is foil-backed, but I could see NO GAP at all from the small amount of exposed wood above the paint in the pickup route. Impressive, young Jedi.
Image
Image

It did come with that stupid foam under the bridge which I immediately ripped out and Sharpied-in, but I can't blame them. It seems like most Floyded stuff comes that way, these days. It does look better, after all, but it hinders pull-ups.
Image

Even nice paint in this cavity! You probably can't see it, but the rout starts flat then angles downward from the middle to the bridge for spring clearance.
Image

Scarf joint and cool volute:
Image

I'm quite impressed with the attention to detail on this thing. The neck joint, while more Gibsonesque than the super-smooth Deans, isn't really an issue unless you're trying to fret notes inbetween the pickups. I don't understand why some people bitch about this so much...
Image
Image

Decent wiring with a decent switch. I mean, I've seen much, much worse.
Image
Image

More shots of the cool volute Laughing
Image
Image

The bad stuff:

1. There's a finish crack on the treble side of the neck joint which you can see in the pic above if you look closely. Probably happened in shipping but I'm not going to send back the first guitar of a limited run for stupid s#%t like that.
2. There's a small ding in the top near the controls. There are machine marks on the very end of the fretboard which I'll probably get out without too much problem. See above.
3. The Floyd spring claw sits up too high and presses the cavity cover when it's installed, but it doesn't really affect the operation of the bridge. It's got so much tension from springs/strings pulling on it that a little pressure from a plastic plate isn't going to move anything.
4. That particular logo looks kind of strange on the HS. I think it looks a little bare, myself. I would have used the standard Washy logo like the Dimes had and my POS Snow Camo 333 has.
5. The TRC, while totally cool, ought to be black.
6. THE 250K POTS!!!!!! This has been brought to the attention of the dealer and should be rectified on all non-shipped guitars, and those like mine can either be returned for a fix or the pots can be sent out to the owner. I opted for the latter since I didn't want to send it back through the UPS gauntlet twice.

The next pics, though, were taken to show the quality of the fretwork and how huge they are. That kicks ass!!!! You can kinda see the marks in these pics though, and maybe the earlier pic of the end of the fretboard. Not too bad.

Buzz Feiten? It tunes fine through my Boss TU12 and I didn't notice much difference. I played in tune with Matt playing his DOA V no problem. I think it's a bunch of hype, myself. MMMAAAAYYYYBBBBBEEEE an open D major sounded a little closer to in tune, but that's it.

It plays like a monster, looks sweet, and sounds great(even for having screwed up electronics). Keeping inflation in mind and the fact that no, this is not a handmade guitar, I call it money well spent. I'm not sure it will beat the Dean, but it's going to be tough. As soon as the Dean comes in, they're getting A/B'd. There's pluses and minuses to each regarding basic features and design details (most notably the neck joint construction), but I won't say which until I can have both in the same room. That's all for now; thanks for listening!

I have a gig this weekend!
by kevphol on Thu Aug 24, 2006 5:00 pm
I play every weekend in church service, but that is obviously a different atmosphere. I live in a cul-de-sac and we are having a block party Saturday night. A friend of mine a few houses down plays some and sings really well so he and I have been working up some tunes. Most of the neighbors have heard us play together at some point during the summer and everybody seems to really like to hear us play, so we are playing the block party! We are going acoustic but through a PA, and maybe with a drum machine on a few tunes. I will of course be playing my Dean Performer DSE! I just picked up a couple of new boom stands and stuff getting ready. We got probably 20 or 25 tunes, everything from Black Crowes to Clapton, SteveMiller, Eagles, you name it! It should be lots of fun.
Carstereos and guitars !
by I M Evil on Thu Aug 24, 2006 6:03 pm
A little idea I had earlier today Cool

Your typical carstereo-setup consists of CD-player-poweramp
and speakers, correct? The CD-player act as both instrument
and preamp.

What if you took away the CD-player and put a guitar
and a guitar-preamp into it. Then you exchange the
carspeakers for a cab full of guitarspeakers, correct ?

Am I wrong on this one or did I just have the greatest idea ever ?

DEAN GUITAR QUESTION
by BLOODROOT on Fri Aug 25, 2006 2:28 am
OK GUYS. I WAS TALKING TO ELLIOT TONIGHT ON THE PHONE AND WE WERE DISCUSSING SOME THINGS. HE ASKED ME WHO ELSE HE SHOULD ENDORSE. I HAD A BUNCH OF NAMES BUT SOMETIMES WHILE ON THE PHONE WITH THE CEO OF A COMPANY LIKE DEAN GUITARS, IT CAN BE VERY INTIMADATING WHICH IN TURNS MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO THINK AND SPEAK. SO I NEED YOUR HELP DOODS. PLEASE NAME SOME BANDS THAT YOU THINK SHOULD HAVE DEAN ENDORSEMENTS. PLEASE REFRAIN FROM JUST THROWING OUT LAME BANDS THAT SELL ZERO TO NO CD'S. DEAN GUITARS ARE INTERESTED IN PUTTING GUITARS ON FAMILIAR FACES THAT WILL SELL CD'S MAINSTREAM ARTISTS. LOVE THEM OR HATE THEM TRIVIUM ARE CARRYING A LARGE TORCH FOR THEM RIGHT NOW AS WELL AS THE DIME LEGACY. NAME SOME GUYS WHO ARE GOING TO BE FOR GOOD BUSINESS. NOT BECAUSE YOU LIKE THE BAND. JUST BECAUSE YOU DO DOESNT MEAN THEY ARE GOOD BUSINESS. ID LIKE TO GET A GOOD LIST TO GIVE TO ELLIOT. FROM WHAT I GATHERED HE WAS INTERESTED IN MOSTLY METAL GUYS FOR THE YOUNG CROWD. FACE IT THAT IS WHAT BUYS LOTS OF GUITARS. THINK OF GUYS IN UP AND COMING BANDS THAT ARE GOING TO BLOW UP SOON AND GUYS THAT ARE ALREADY FAMOUS THAT MAY BE INTERESTED IN A NEW DEAL. OBVIOUSLY GUYS LIKE ZAKK AND SLASH ARE NEVER LEAVING GIBSON OR GUYS LIKE YNGWIE WILL NEVER LEAVE FENDER. PLEASE HELP ME AND DEAN GUITARS. LET KEEP IN PROFESSIONAL AND NOT JUST THROWING NAMES OUT.THANKS GUYS.

I love Black Beauties
by Lanning is Killdozer on Fri Aug 25, 2006 1:36 pm
I got a few sets of DR Black Beauties last night to do my monthly restringing. WOW they are cool. I put the 10's on my USA Pro V. I am in love with them. They play so well and I really believe the tone is better than the GHS Boomers I was using before. Not to mention that the black strings look bad as hell on that guitar. I got a set for each of my guitars and think I will stick with them from now on. I am also hoping that these last a bit longer than standard uncoated strings. Viva La DR!
went to guitar center.....shrugs
by DimebagDemmel on Fri Aug 25, 2006 6:55 pm
heard they started carrying some deans, went to go check it out.

walk in front and center they got their line of deans, noir ml, shenk std, a couple other bolt on ml's, a d-o-flame and flage, and the DFH CFH. grabbed the DFH. very cool lookin guitar. wsa right by the line 6 amps, so i tried them both out, turns out the guitar was awesome but the line's suck balls, the volume controls were all broken, i was switching between crunch and metal, it got louder when i did this, so i went to turn it down a little and rather than down it goes up tenfold, now i see what you were all were complaining about that buddy screaming like a bitch with a skinned knee at high volumes. switched amps to the mesas Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy and continued playing. the guitar was awesome (apart from the high volume screaming). loved the v neck, not as defined as my buds razorback, but i think i may have liked this one better, maybe just cus im used to C's, but this neck was awesome. the BL was great at low volumes too, very similar to my Dimebucker, but not exactly the same. the finish was pretty cool looking, dean did a pretty good job on the bolts, no flaws on this one. overall pretty solid guitar with one flaw (which everyone already knows about, hope dean gets this figured out). the geet was priced at 999, but i wouldnt buy it there, forum dealers got my business Wink but hey GC thanks for lettin me try'em out on your buck Wink Wink

EDIT: almost forgot, played a couple martins (2gish) they were awesome, love those acoustics, if i had the cash, id def spring for one. also played a 12 string Ovation, it was cool cus it was a 12 string but the guitar itself was kinda meh, the martins spoiled me

Keeping a newly fitted string in tune
by muckers on Sat Aug 26, 2006 4:56 pm
Right, at the minute I'm having trouble keeping my new top E string in tune on my Yamaha Pacifica (not sure what model, but it's tele style with a plain wood finish all over - no whammy bar.)

I put the string in, and wind it on to tune it up but as soon as I bend the string it immediately goes out of tune.

Now I know this is normal for new strings, but I fitted this string roughly a day ago and it's getting a bit frustrating.

Not altogether sure what guage of string I'm using but it was a '10' according to the packet (I'll find out a make in a minute).

Any sure fire way of making sure the string stays in tune?

I ask myself why in the living hell I like Marshalls...
by aus-rotten on Sun Aug 27, 2006 8:24 am
Well I went a little amp shopping today just to see an Idea of what I might want in the near future...

Well....

Peavey XXX- Has no Balls, I think The tubes in it suck but dunno...The Head just didnt sound full sounding.
Peavey 6505-Insane GAIN!!!, But the Distortion has no structure to it, and the cleans which are important to me suck really bad.
Krank Dime Sig.- Sounds like a Blue Voodoo knock off.
Blue Voodoo- Cleans werent as good as the XXX and the distortion was really odd sounding, Kinda sounds like a weaker 6505 in the gain department.
Vetta II- Sounded great for about 5 sec. then you start to notice that is doesnt sound....Real and it was 1200$......Screw that.
Randall Rg100es- It was broken and it sounded like poop....But then again im looking for a tube amp.
Marshall 1959SLP-The cleans of this thing with a 59' duncan tone all the way down sounded very very nice.
Marshall TSL 100- This is were I trip out....Cleans were almost there with the 1959SLP, Overdrive one sounds like ACDC old school Trash feel to it, But the overdrive 2 was amazing with the deep switch on it sounds very full, A little muddy but still amazing, the bass mids and highs were all very solid.

I was expecting to like a XXX but Its kinda feels wierd to like the Marshall more...Since I barley hear anyone talk good about them anymore.

Hmmm dunno so Far the TSL takes my chioce til I go to BassExchange ...

Pickup preference
by Metalmania20 on Sun Aug 27, 2006 6:26 pm
What's up guys I am a long time EMG user and I've just recently got a new axe that I'm going to throw some pickups in. And I was going to try something different rather than active pickups for once. And I was wondering what you guys would recomend as a passive bridge pickup that gets a whole bunch of distortion. I've heard the Super Distortion get's a good bit of output out of it. I was wondering if you guys could help me out on picking out a bridge pickup. I know what I'm going to put in the neck and that is a '59. I have played on a dimebucker.. And I didn't care for it all that much.

When did you first hear about Dean Guitars?
by Dusty Rhodes on Mon Aug 28, 2006 3:40 am
Most of us came to this forum because we all share something in common. Owning a Dean. But how and where did we first hear about Dean?
For myself, I had just ordered a Custom Shop Les Paul Gold Top which was going to take anywhere from 3 to 6 months to produce and into my hands. So, into my second month of waiting I was on my way to work and was listen to a D.J. talk to a call-in listener. The D.J. ask what he was up to and he said that he had just picked up a new guitar. The D.J. asked what he got. "A Dean" the guy said. A Dean? What's a Dean I thought. So when I got to work I Googled the site and started looking at all of the models. Most were not to my personal liking but one caught my eye. The amber burst USA Hardtail. I then started looking up reviews and found every one to be rated very high. That was unusual. Ok, now I HAVE to play one. I then found a local shop that carried Dean and stopped by after work. Not only did they have a comprehensive selection of Deans but had one amberburst USA Hardtail! This particular one was a 2002 and signed by Dean. After just one minute of playing it felt like I had owned it for years. "I'll take it" I said. They did the set up while I waited. I was up past midnight playing as I could not put it down. Anyway, that's my story. What's your??
BTW, the Gold Top aslo very sweet.

Notes on my Las Vegas gig
by Jag Panzer on Mon Aug 28, 2006 3:59 pm
I got back this weekend from Las Vegas. My gig jamming on the Beatles tunes was there.

The gig was for a convention and the audience had probably 1500 people in it, so it was a decent sized gig.

The band featured mostly guys who play in cover bands. The notable exception was Adam Forgione on keys. Adam has done 3 tours with Ritchie Blackmore and played on the Blackmore's Night 'Under a Violet Moon' album.

All the musicians had excellent chops. As usual, I was probably the least technically skilled musician in the group.

The gig went well. The audience liked us. Nothing particularly amazing about the show itself.

What did amaze me is the differences between club and touring musicians. I should note that I mean no offense to the club musicians, they are great guys and outstanding players.

As a touring musician, you aren't too concerned about winning over the crowd. Typically the audience member has paid to see you and is often familar with your songs. So basically the crowd is into you (unless you totally suck). It's totally different for club musicians. It's thier job to draw the crowd on thier feet and get some energy going amongst the audience.

For the club musician, if you speed up the song a bit or tack on an extra verse AND the crowd loves it = You've done your job. For a touring musician this can be disasterous. You've got much stricter time constraints on tour so you normally can't do this like this.

Instead of focusing on audience response (as a club musician may do) a touring musician focuses on the finer points of the music - specifically the dynamics, tightness, etc. You develop a set of subtle visual cues when things get off track slightly (ok, sometimes they aren't so subtle! Laughing ). But usually they are very subtle looks that the audience never notices.

Sure enough, within one beat after things went awry, Adam and I made eye contact and gave that subtle look that said 'Things are off'. The parts that were off were very minor. The audience didn't notice. But the parts were off.

Again no offense to the club guys, they played great. I just found it very interested how each person approached the show.

Guitar reality show?
by Dusty Rhodes on Tue Aug 29, 2006 3:18 am
Pick a subject and chances are there is already a reality show about it. About the only ones I watch are the custom car and motorcycle series. So I get to thinking how cool it would be to be able to watch a series on the top guitar makers of the world and being able to watch the masters in action designing and fabricating these beauties. The more you think about it the more ideas build one on top of the other. I think you could devote a solid year's programing on the acoustic and electric. Cover the entire evolution from it's beginnings to present day techonology. Show interviews with the artists who play them and why the like their particular axe of choice.
Ok, that's the idea. Now somebody go out and produce it.

I called MF and was told that they were getting the new RP-150 multi-effects pedals, but weren't going to have them till September.

I saw Sweetwater and Bananas have them already. I was wondering if anyone actually bought and received one yet, or if they were just pre-selling them.

I'll try to call them a little later today I guess. I also wanted to know if anyone here had tried one of the new ones and had any impressions.
