by VandalXBruno on Mon Jan 01, 2007 8:52 am
Hi..

in the Dean Artists there's this girl called Kim Ferron from FL, but the only info there is from like 2000, it says that she was going to have a debut album and stuff and one of her songs was played on the Buffy the Vampire Hunter show... her website is down and there no info about her in the whole internet, only the lyrics to her "hit" song... but thats it... i wanted to know if any of you guys know anything about her... did she die? did she became religious or something and now she cant play guitar?

Kim Ferron is her name, so, any info will be usefull, thank you in advance

Tried out A CFH-DFH and a 79' ML yesterday...
by New Found Power on Tue Jan 02, 2007 1:37 am
CFH DFH - I tried it out at Guitar Center, And it was awesome the Floyd withstood some abuse and the action was great. The finish was flawless. Over all it was a really great guitar, My only gripe is that the neck, at least in my mind, was way too thick. but it had a nice backshape. very sweet git, I would love to have one with a thinner neck. Smile

79' ML - also played at Guitar Center, It was a a very kickass guitar, lighter than I thought, and it played great as well. The Braziliaburst finish was awesome, very well made guitar, My only Gripes for this guitar are once again the neck, in my opinion is way, way too thick. A thin c-shape would be perfect for me. As for my other gripe, Oh god they need to correct that frackin' crooked crotch Mad . It bugged the hell out of me! Still a very nice guitar and I would love to own this guitar as well, (with some of my modifications of course) Wink
Here is some PRON for you guys!

BEWARE! Some of these guitars are not deans..

The other morning I woke up and had time to take a few pictures of my collection. You might see a few finger prints here and there. They were just quick pictures. I didn't really go out of my way to take them. So let me know what you guys think.

From left to right: DFH, 79 ML with EMG 81/85, Washburn 7 string (just for fun)

Prefered Strings.
by Warlock_340 on Tue Jan 02, 2007 5:17 am
So, I did a project for my Physical Science course, and I decided to take two string manufacturers (Fender and DR) and put them too the test to see which could take more pressure before snapping. I liked DRs before, but after this test, they beat the crap out of the Fenders. So, of all the string manufacturers out there, which would you rather use?

by Jag Panzer on Tue Jan 02, 2007 4:37 pm
First of all --- Huge thanks to Steve at BRG! Steve is da man! In addition to being a great dealer, Steve also did a fantastic job of setting up the guitar.

I was fun trying to get the guitar....NOT! FEDex canceled delivery on Thursday because of the weather, yet I saw FEDex trucks all day. Then on Friday they didn't even bother to update thier system. I called FEDex on Friday and they couldn't even find the guitar.

But then it showed up on Sunday. Yeah, Sunday.

No pictures yet, but it's a GREAT guitar.

I think I'm going to blacken it out with some black hardware and BK black chrome pups.

Import and USA DFH's
by Caraluzzo on Wed Jan 03, 2007 6:18 am
this may sound like a stupid question but its something that ive been thinking about..

i know that the USA has a floyde, Dime sig rep. and the certificate but i was wondering what the difference is playing wise. i own the import DFH but it seems like the only thing i need to do is upgrade my floyde.
if i were to upgrade my floyde, would there be any difference with the "playing" of the guitar?

Power Tools Near Guitars
by Fugg Kinay on Thu Jan 04, 2007 12:10 am
Problem is my bass requires removal of the rear control cover to replace batteries for the elex. The manufacturer uses wood screws as opposed to pem inserts and machine screws. After five battery replacements the onset of stripping is evident.

Here she is without the rear cover attached.

The lifting at the edges of the screw holes signals future stripping. So, using the following tooling and hardware:

I installed the pems flush mount with the body in 1/8" holes .

Pretty simple, I threaded in the inserts with my fingers and they are rock solid.

Anyway, I will bring this along to DOA if anyone wants to use it.

poor quality mxr pedal
by '87 sherwood on Fri Jan 05, 2007 5:34 pm
Yesterday I purchased a brand new m108 10 bang equalizer from a very reputable company to find out that the stomp switch didn't work. I removed the back of the pedal and found the plastic casing enclosing the stomp switch had cracked right off inside the pedal. The only thing holding it from rattling around was the wiring. I couldn't replace it if I wanted to since it's wired together with whats looks like computer wires. You know the strip that has 4 or five molded together in a flat strip. I hope this in not a sign of quality from MXR. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Making myself something really classy.
by Blazer on Sat Jan 06, 2007 1:40 am
Okay I was in this music store where they had a blow out sale of Allparts made bodies and necks which were seconds because of them having blemishes, dings or other tiny issues that made them less than perfect. I had my sights on what must have been the fanciest body in that pile.

It was a strat body with an S-S-H cavity rout in three tone sunburst with a curly maple top to die for and with front body binding. it looks killer, very similar to Stevie Ray Vaughan's Hamiltone custom strat.

Image
And this is what I'm about to do with that killer looking body.

When I got home I installed a Kahler 500 series Killer bridge (and not a floyd rose as seen on the artist impression) and readied the guitar to take my favored Duncan pickups, if all goes as I want it to go then this guitar will be my main axe in the new band I'm starting.

I will keep you guys informed on the process as it devellops.

So I plug it in and now it sounds all weak and middy, nothing like what my combo amp sounded like alone. What is the reason for this? I thought maybe its because I have a lack of wattage, or is it because my combo amps direct out sounds like sh!t?

String experience
by BFH on Sun Jan 07, 2007 5:10 am
Hmmm, I've used a couple different brands of strings now and I now think that the type of string you use is one of the most important things to your tone.

I found that most ernie ball strings were twangy and had more presence than other strings. DR's (although I only got to use tite fite ones) seemed warmer and had a bit more sustain. GHS's are very bassy with less presence, they packed a punch, were very harmonically responsive, and had a pretty long life. They were ideal for droptuning.

Elixers had the longest life out of any of them (they actually died before they would break, months of usage), while they had no distinct tonal charecteristic. Overall its tough to choose just one. Anyone else want to share their experience with other brands of strings?

How about a limited run Z?
by that one guy on Sun Jan 07, 2007 9:11 pm
I've been looking at all of these "limited run" guitars that forum members have put together. I have yet to see a limited run Z be suggested. I do not want to actually buy one (only because i just bought a dean) or be responsible for anything that will cost money Laughing , but more so give some Z fans something to suck on for a while. I'm not entirely sure what it takes to get dean to build a limited run guitar, so I'm hoping someone a little more responsible can take it from here.

Reply with the specs you would like to see.

Thanks,

My new Guitar - Non Dean (Sorry!) *Pron*
by Perks on Mon Jan 08, 2007 11:23 am
Well guys, i had been lusting for a razorback for a long long time, but a few things put me off. Having to upgrade the floyd arm and the neck pickup, it being made in china and the fact that its price is so high for what you're typically getting (i'm not saying its not an awesome guitar, but it should atleast have an original floyd.)
So for $1300 US all up... I got a complete shred machine
9 Piece Maple Neck (Neck Through)
Quilt maple top with nitro finish
Seymour Duncans
27 Frets! (haha)
Gold Original Floyd
Ash body
Ebony Fret Board

The brand is edwards. They are Japanese ESPs, made in the japanese esp factory, by the esp workers. Edwards are Japanese ESPs not intended for the American market. Check em out

Does anyone make a good guitar stand????
by Jag Panzer on Mon Jan 08, 2007 10:49 pm
Does anyone make a good guitar stand????

I can't find one stand to suit my needs.

I have a couple of the small metal portable folding stands. These are great for traveling. They work well with my Caddy but won't work with a V or Z.

I have a few of the Ultimate Support Genesis stands. They were nice at first but thier starting to weaken. My Caddy flexes it really bad. My Z hangs funny from model without the bottom support.

I also have some old school metal tublar stands. They are ok, but they're too big and bulky to travel with.

Someone needs to make a good stand!
Can anyone tell me..

Silverburst Z...specs update
by RichisBack on Tue Jan 09, 2007 3:21 am
Im starting threads just to see if we have enough interest in this guitar to get the idea pitched to tampa, Steve from BRG would be our dealer

here are the specs so far

Based off the 79 series (same elctronics etc as 79 series)
Silverburst Finish
Chrome or Black hardware
Chrome Pup Covers (if chrome hardware is chosen)
Block Inlays
3 Ply Body Binding w/ neck anf HS binding
This run will be cheaper than the ZDP Run b/c it is based off the 79 series not the black gold series,

Were looking to get a kickass affordable guitar here!

We need atleast 20 people before the idea is pitched to tampa

Seymour Duncan Pickup booster
by Goc on Tue Jan 09, 2007 9:50 am
Ok, i just got it today, and tried it out in a few way. Basically, this thing rocks! It's got 100% clean bypass, adds no distortion to the tone and is LOUD AS HELL!!! Twisted Evil The pickup resonance switch doesn't do much for my tone (even though it's not meant to) but i'm telling ya, this thing can go up to 25 db and at the 7-8 db there's a huuuge diference in volume!

I'd just like to thank Lanning for reccomending it to me, seems i will no longer have to worry if the solo will be heard, now it's time to start worrying if the band's gonna be heard when i turn this sucker on! Peace!

Pro Hardtails
by MetalMonkey on Tue Jan 09, 2007 10:59 pm
hey guys Wink

I'd like to see some pictures of pro series hardtails since I haven't seen many around here - especially in natural/wood finishes (natural, walnut and rosewood)
that would be very nice

and I also wanted to know how they compared in terms of sound to the other pro series - are there any major differences ?

I wanted to start saving money for a pro series and I realized that I hadn't really looked for the HT pros yet

thanks
Marshall home built 1 x 12 speaker cab
by Dusty Rhodes on Tue Jan 09, 2007 11:00 pm
Just wanted to share this. I love my Marshall DSL 401 combo but wished it has 2 x 12's so.... I made my own Marshall 1 x 12 speaker cab. Every piece of hardware, covering, cloth etc is 100% Marshall from Mojo Suply the speaker is a Celestion Vintage 30. It came out perfect! I made it the same size as the combo amp so that the same type of amp cover can be used for both. And.... it sounds great!!

NEW AMP!!! (Randall porn!)
by Killer Wooolf777 on Wed Jan 10, 2007 2:06 am
Finally paid my amp off at guitar lessons today and got to bring the monster home! A Randall RM100... This amp is strait up fuh king COOL! Right now I'm running the ULTRA, RECTO and BLACK FACE modules.

Ok. I hooked her all up to my cab, set all the knobs to 12 oclock (except the volumes ofcourse) and flipped on the power. The wait for the tubes to warm up was exruciating! Finally after about 40-50 seconds I turned off the stand by and hit an open E. Right off the bat I noticed a nice, warm, heavy tone. So then I went screwing around with the knobs...

ULTRA: This module rocks! Globs of super tight gain. I found a ryhtm chunk that I was in love with in seconds. This thing is the holy grail of that trademark "Randall tone." This module sounds so good by itself that I might have an EQ and an overdrive for sale. Laughing The only down fall is that it's pretty noisy. I just picked up a MXR smart gate though so I don't mind.

RECTO: I wasn't impressed. I'm not much of a Mesa guy in the first place, and this module didn't examplify them very well anyway. Not enough gain for me. I'll probably be trading this one for an ULTRA LEAD.

BLACKFACE: Probably my favorite! Its bright, yet warm and has an unbelievable "SPANK" to it. Once I got it set up right, it's one of the best clean tones I've ever heard. I'm totally satisfied with this one.

Overall I'm in love with this amp. I can't wait to get home from school tomorrow and crank the bitch up! Or to take it to band practice this weekend... Now... The porn!

150W of EL-34 power... this puppy freakin' SCREAMS! I dialed in a few nice sounds right off the bat, but the tonal possibilities of this amp are endless. It's a snarling beast in the 50W mode. The 150W mode could blow the windows out of my house! It's incredible.

I'm going to have to take a lot more time with this amp before I post a more comprehensive review. There are so many combinations to try out. Just when I thought I was happy with my settings I flipped it over from diode to tube rectifiers, and was blown away! The 5U4 rectifiers give it such an organic sound that you can literally feel what your strings are doing. I'm very pleased with this head.

What day is it today? Gretsch day!
by Blazer on Fri Jan 12, 2007 1:30 am
Well, today was the day that I went Gretsch and got my Gold sparkle Jet home.

Image

When I paid the guitar and asked for a package of D'Addario XL 011 strings, the guy behind the counter goes. "Are you sure, you probably need to re-adjust the neck when you put something that hefty on that guitar."

Four hours after I swapped the strings and the neck is holding up just fine, no adjusting needed whatsoever.

The way the guitar played and sounded GREATLY improved with those new strings, the 009 set it came with failed to get that wonderfull bell-like chime of the hollow body.

I plugged it into my Peavey Classic combo, dailed the reverb to roughly two o'clock used my trusty Boss overdrive for a little growl and my delay for some slapback. And it was instant riffing rockabilly licks. I am a metal guy but Brian Setzer is the guy who influenced me to play guitar and this little Gretsch enables me to get in touch with my inner rockabilly rocker.
dimarzio posts thier D activator neck and bridge models
by j.arledge on Fri Jan 12, 2007 5:39 am
taken from dimarzio.com

bridge model dp# 220

Active humbuckers have a distinctive sound - powerful, clean, open-sounding, with excellent harmonic overtones and very tight lows. The down side for many players is that they also sound cold, have limited dynamics and run out of headroom when played hard. And of course, they need batteries. In 2006 we took a close look at the most popular active neck and bridge humbuckers to see if we could capture all of the good qualities and eliminate the disadvantages. The D Activator™ neck and bridge models are the result. They have the same loud yet clean sound as the active humbuckers players are familiar with, and killer harmonics. They also respond instantly to hard or light pick attack. In a word, they rock. And they don’t need batteries.
Recommended For: Bridge
Tech Talk: An interesting fact about the most popular active bridge pickups is that they aren’t incredibly loud. Instead, they have a strong, focused attack that hits the amp very hard and makes them ‘feel’ more powerful than they actually spec out to be. This is an important characteristic that we needed to capture with the D Activator™ bridge pickup. We also wanted to avoid the limiting effect that can occur with active pickups when they are played hard. Our pickup is passive with a lot of headroom, and it responds quickly and accurately to changes in pick attack. A hard pick attack doesn’t cause the signal to flatten out, and picking more softly or rolling the volume control down lets the sound clean up naturally.

Tech Talk: There’s a big difference between a pickup that sounds bright and one that sounds thin. A thin-sounding pickup will be brittle on the highest frets and empty-sounding in the mids and lows. The D Activator™ neck model doesn’t do this – both the wound and plain strings remain tight and bright up the neck, and very well balanced. This allows the D Activator™ neck model to function well in both longer scale bolt-ons and shorter scale, set-neck guitars. It also makes for a good bridge pickup if you want a sound with a lot of snap and power.

so randy you can throw away those emgs and get yourself a really pickup Laughing

So i've bought this amp around 6 years ago and never really gave it too much attention even though it has a beautiful clean sound. Lately I've heard that those babies are quite rare and prices for those are pretty high. Since no one i've talked to could tell me how much that amp would be worth, i've thought to try and give it a shot over here. It's a '74 silverface pro reverb with ORIGINAL marvel speakers so if anyone knows something about those, please reply! thanx!

Recommendations for delay pedals

Thinking of dipping into my pocket for a delay pedal, which my setup is lacking in.

What delay pedals have you used that stand out and seem good? I've spied the Digitech Digital Delay pedal on Jon's site which seems good on the face of it, but does anybody have any other recommendations that they'd chose over the DigiDelay?

Or do you have any experience of the DigiDelay? Any good?

Tremolo on the Dean Z88 (kahler-style) HELP!

Does anyone know how to adjust one of these? I got it in a trade with Richisback and I cannot get the bridge parallel with the body. With floyds you can either take out a spring or screw the spring claw into the body. But this kahler style doesn't have springs. This trem is not a Kahler, but a kahler style. I cannot figure out how to adjust the height at all! HELP!!

Why are set necks so much better than bolt on necks? I know you've all been asked this before, but just from what I see, although set necks seem more structurally sound, there's little difference. Does it affect the sound the guitar makes, or like, the feel of it or what?

Not to be a pain or sound like a whiner here.

But does anyone else think they could remove a few of those.

Man alive it is 2007 now, could there be a section they put SOME of these, like an archival section just to clear a few off the main page.

Have to scroll half way down the page to get to the regular threads. I would think 20 stickies/announcements is a tad overkill.Laughing

Just a question and a suggestion.

Need ideas for my gibby explorer
by cowboy_from_hell_90 on Sun Jan 14, 2007 6:16 am
This thing has a lot of sentimental value for me, as it is the first thing I ever bought with cash that I earned myself. It as old as I am and I have wanted to restore it to the glory that it deserves for a long time now. I can't decide whether I want to refinish it in black (the finish has a LOT of dings, dents and stains) or if I want it natural (it's mahogany). I also can't decide if I want to floyd it or give it a fixed bridge (there's a Kahler flyer in there now). The only thing I AM sure of is that I want EMGs in it for some variety (I have dimarzios in my other axe). So yeah, any other ideas I'm welcome to no matter how whacky they sound. Inlay ideas, knob ideas, whatever! Help me out!

SD '59 or Dimarzio Super Dist. 2? (Or other?)
by muckers on Sun Jan 14, 2007 1:10 pm
Yes, folks, it's that time again! Recommend muckers some gear! Laughing

So I'm thinking of swapping out the stock Dean neck pickup in my Razorback for something a little more 'top end' than an off the shelf stock pup - I've heard good things about the Seymour Duncan 59 neck pickup as well as the Dimarzio Super 2.

But which is better? Or is there an even better, or perhaps cheaper too?, neck pup for my needs? I've never swapped out pickups before so I'm a little uneducated in this respect.

The kind of stuff I play is usually hard rock/metal stuff and I'd probably use both clean and distorted sounds with the neck.

The Dimarzio pup; the name super distortion kinda suggests a distortion-specific neck pickup. Would I get a good clean tone out of it as well?

Black Razorback Paint
by muckers on Sun Jan 14, 2007 10:18 pm
I've noticed a small, almost perfectly circular, chip in my Explosion Razorbacks bottom most bridge fin on the underside of the fin.

It's right down to the wood (ie. all the pain on that small circle) is gone. It's not very big (about .2 of an inch at biggest - I'll try and get a pic) but because it's down to the wood, it does stand out in colour.

Obviously I need to paint it to rectify it but is there a certain kind of paint that I need to get that would be best? Any tips/methods?

Woo, I'm really exhausting this forum for help, huh? ConfusedLaughing

Theyre have probably been millions of posts about these pickups but I was just looking for some of your opinions of them... Specifically are the Mighty Mite Hot Rails good? Also the MotherBucker... If they are im probably going to look into them due to the cheap prices.

Does anyone on here do refinishing jobs?...That i can trust?
by cowboy_from_hell_90 on Mon Jan 15, 2007 3:12 am
I have a Gibson Explorer that needs refinishing. Nothing fancy, I just want it in the original color (black) without all the scratches and dings and stains. I remember hearing about someone on here that did really good jobs at stuff like this. I think his name was jeepster? Jeepman? Something like that.

If it's possible I wouldn't mind a tiger eye finish either. Anyway I just wanted to gauge a price, and if anyone on here actually does that sort of thing and how it works out. Or if anyone knows a place in Toronto that could do it for cheap (Twelfth Fret is asking $1,400, I know I can get it done cheaper than that).

Fender pickups that he is giving me, all I need is a neck and the
controlls and I will have a sweet looking axe. Very Happy

Getting ripped off on Ebay... UPDATE 1/19
by Anonymous on Tue Jan 16, 2007 8:28 am
UPDATE!

So the TCV I was convinced I was getting screwed on arrived today...

The seller had shipped it 2 days ago, after my Ebay and Paypal scare tactics had started. Also, it arrived in its hardshell case, in a Dean box... with 3 plastic bags as "padding" ... Rolling Eyes The box was too big for the case too, you could hear it rattling around in there.

I checked my email to find a tracking number delivered to me via my Paypal dispute, and an email from him saying "Hi I saw you got the guitar could you please close the dispute now, thanks, Josh."

That's it. What a frippin icehole.

Anyways, I'll get pictures later and see if I can get over the horrid purchase process I went through and just enjoy it. Truth be told I had been starting to look forward to getting my money back. Laughing

Thanks for all the advice folks.
Wah's

Ok so I'm looking for kinda the next thing for my crappy rig and I was thinking I'd maybe invest in a wah for solo's and stuff. I've been thinking of going for the Dimebag CFH wah (not because of Dime related reasons, because I've heard it's the most versatile wah). It's kind of expensive though at about €169 + postage so what do you guys think I should do?

VINNIE PAUL: HELLYEAH CD Is Best Record I've Collaborated On Since PANTERA's 'Vulgar Display' - Jan. 16, 2007

HELLYEAH, the new band featuring former PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott alongside members of MUDVAYNE and NOTHINGFACE, will release its self-titled debut album on April 10 via Epic Records.

The quintet includes three of hard rock's most revered and valuable players, with careers highlighted by an astonishing run of chart-topping gold and platinum albums, major industry awards, critical acclaim, Grammy nominations and music of monolithic power.

"Tom [Maxwell, NOTHINGFACE; guitar], Jerry [Montano, DANZIG, NOTHINGFACE; bass] and I have been talking about working together ever since we staggered through the streets of New Orleans five years ago," says MUDVAYNE/HELLYEAH vocalist Chad "Helvis" Gray. "I mentioned it to Greg [Tribbett, MUDVAYNE; guitar] and he immediately wanted in, and when Vinnie came on board the whole thing just took on a life of its own. This was a must-do project for all of us."

"The guys from HELLYEAH and the incredible music we've created have brought me back to what I love," states Vinnie. "'HellYeah' is the best record I've collaborated on since [PANTERA's] 'Vulgar Display of Power'. The vibe is ‘positive with a kick-your-ass-attitude.' I can't wait to take this band on tour."

Gray and Tribbett will tour in support of the HELLYEAH debut in between recording the new MUDVAYNE album. The follow-up to 2004's blockbuster release, "Lost And Found", which debuted at No. 2 on Billboard's Top 200, is due this fall and finds the Grammy-nominated quartet working once again with producer Dave Fortman (EVANESCENCE, SUPERJOINT RITUAL).

"It's cool to have both MUDVAYNE and HELLYEAH as creative outlets now, even though the approach, subject matter, and attitudes between the two projects are completely different," says Gray. "I'm looking forward to balancing both bands in my life — my new extremely busy life."

A nine-minute video of HELLYEAH writing and recording its self-titled album in Dallas, Texas has been posted online at YouTube.com. Two songs from the CD — "Hellyeah" and "Matter of Time" — are available for listening on the band's MySpace page.
Converting String Through to Kahler?
by Killer Wooolf777 on Wed Jan 17, 2007 3:58 am
On Wednesday, I'm ordering new studs, inserts, riser wheels and a routing template to put a Kahler on my 79' ML. Got a couple of questions though.

How should I go about taking out the metal where the strings run through the body???

Also... I can use the inserts from the current bridge to hold the riser wheels correct?

Any input from people who have done this would be appriciated!

Little info ´bout the new Ozz record
by kallesj on Wed Jan 17, 2007 9:23 pm
Ozzy Osbourne has told Dan Epstein of Revolver magazine (web site) that he has finally found the perfect setting for making records: the newly soundproofed guest house behind his Beverly Hills mansion, which he's outfitted with a mixing desk and a ProTools rig.

"When I made records before, I'd have to get up, get in a cab or car, go to the studio, and wait for everyone to turn up," Osbourne explained. "If you're already inspired before you leave for the studio, you're @#%$@!!& by the time you get there! But now I have the luxury of working in my own home. I can play the music on my own sound system, and I can lie down in my room and watch my flat-screen TV whenever I like."

Unlike 2001's slickly produced "Down to Earth", the last album of original Ozzy material, the new disc promises to be a rawer and heavier affair. Recorded with the same band that backed Osbourne on his scattered 2006 Ozzfest dates — Zakk Wylde on guitar, Mike Bordin on drums, and former ROB ZOMBIE bassist Rob "Blasko" Nicholson — the album has no official producer, although longtime Mutt Lange protégé Kevin Churko is serving as the engineer.

"Kevin's working the machines and helping me with the songwriting," said Osbourne. "He really knows what he's doing with the ProTools, which is good because I can't work the frippin thing. I can barely work a light switch!"

"We just went in and jammed out the riffs, just like how they made 'Back in Black' and all the SABBATH record," said Wylde. "I don't need Bob Rock there to tell me what to do, like that 'Vagina Monologues' band METALLICA. When you know where you're going, you don't need to ask for frippin directions! It sounds like classic Ozzy — there's piano ballads, there's an acoustic thing, and then there's the heavy s#%t. From the beginning, Oz kept saying to me, 'Zakk, we need another 'No More Tears' — we've gotta piss all over that frackin' record. This thing's gotta be able to hang with 'Diary of a Madman'!'"

"I always try to make a great album," says Osbourne. "It's not like I go in there and go, 'You know what? I've had a great run — I'm gonna do a piece of s#%t for my next album!' But to be perfectly truthful to you, 'Down to Earth' was just a filler album to me. It did well, and some people liked it, and I loved the ballad on it ['Dreamer']. But this album I put in the same league as 'No More Tears', 'Blizzard of Ozz', and 'Diary'. It's definitely my influence of SABBATH coming out, here and there. But then again, I would have liked to see SABBATH put out an album like this at this stage of the game."
New Guitar Pr0n -- NON DEAN
by Meisterjäger on Wed Jan 17, 2007 9:59 pm
So, my birthday's coming up, so I figured I'd treat myself! I was gonna go for a Dean, but along with me being able to get a 'cheap' Dean when I visit the states in 2 months, and the general rareness of these guitars (in my experience, in this half of the pond) I figured I'd go for this.

Plus I've got a REALLY soft spot for roundies!

Sustainer sounds real nice, and the SD JB in the bridge is FAT. I mean, REALLY FAT. Play's real nice, and definitely stands up to my LTD, I think I may even prefer it.

How does one fill the cavity from a kahler trem?
by cowboy_from_hell_90 on Thu Jan 18, 2007 3:03 am
Alright so I got this old Gibson Explorer that I'm going to be refinishing, and I decided I wanted to do this in the classic Gibson style. Right now it has a Kahler tremolo and I want to put a tune o matic and stop bar on there. Now... my only idea at the moment is getting a block of mahogany and gluing it right in there. HOWEVER, would this be able to handle the stress from the bridge? I'm open to any other ideas as well.

ESP have a new variation going on with their Explorer type axe

Image

And they've come out with a new, boring looking Cort-looking, Peavey Jack Daniels kinda roundie

Image

And, of course, they now have a non-Mustaine V

Image

And how about Willie Adler's new signature model. Check out that inlay, it's badass!

Image

For BC Rich, I'm pretty sure the Warbeast is new. Needless to say, I'd hit it...

Image

And I'm sure this is new, too, called the Dagger, it's a semi-hollow, BC Rich Virgin looking type thing.

Image

And now for Ibanez. They've started stealing guitar shapes... Ibanez XPT700... AKA Jackson Warrior. I can't believe they've done that.

Image

And they now make a (boring looking) Flying V, VBT700

Image

And, a slight plus side, The new (I think) Iceman

New Deans.. But where are the LEFTIES!?
by -JiMi DRiX- on Fri Jan 19, 2007 7:06 am
I love all the new guitars Dean has released, don't get me the least bit wrong, but i am disappointed that i have not seen a single new left handed available guitar...
As the majority of everyone here (or just in general), play right handed, there ARE still left handed guitar players! So i HOPE some of you can see things from my point of view. I don't even know that any other lefty players come to the forum anymore. I use to remember "Southpaw Shredder", but haven't seen him in some time. Always seeing new guitars, limited runs, etc, and only being able to LOOK and DREAM. Its a real bummer. Maybe I'm just venting, but i feel it somewhat that the lack of any new lefties just plain sucks...

BUT!

is there any hope of more new Deans being posted tomorrow too? Then maybe i can eat my words. Laughing Laughing

It's now 2:00 AM and I am so pumped I can't sleep. Okay, I took a 2 hour nap earlier in my easy chair, so that my have something to do with it. Anyway, I spoke with Dean tonight and he said the Dean Booth is the place to be at this year's show. We arrive at the convention center at around noon, so we will be just in time for the live webcast. Dean asked me to "floor produce" and I have a feeling I may be able to get some airtime myself. If so, I plan to flip all of you off!

I can't wait to see the new models. There was a time when I knew everything that was going on and what was going to be introduced. Not so anymore! Since I first became involved with Dean Guitars nearly 7 years ago, the company has grown several times over. I plan to take about a million pictures and I will also have several video segments for my NAMM coverage. This will be my 5th Winter NAMM show and promises to be the best yet! The website says my guitar reached the UK...PROBLEM!

Apparently they tried to deliver my guitar on the 18th Jan 2007 when BOTH my parents were in. They didn't come any where near my house and therefore couldn't leave an attempted slip with a number to call or anything. So I've left it another day, arranged with a neighbour to sign for the guitar if it was to arrive and again...nothing. Although this time nothing has been listed on the website. What am I to do...

The truth about the MKH sig guitar

Matt is NOT releasing a Razorback. Here is a clue that Paolo(Trivium's bass player gave)
"I know Matt and Dean are designing a new guitar, don't know when Dean will do it though. They did make the new Mustaine Dean pretty fast. "

It is a HINT(just a hint) that maby they will do something original with an ML or whatever.Put the Matt Heafy signature talk to rest for a while.

Oh yeah,it's HAY-FEE no HEE-FEE if you did not know.

Bringing back the filling-the-Kahler-cavity thread...
by cowboy_from_hell_90 on Sat Jan 20, 2007 6:11 am
Nobody seemed to notice the last post I made on there, and then of course it was kicked from all the NAMM threads but now that that's over here it goes again.

So basically, the buddy that's helpin me out is gonna be cutting a block of mahogany slightly larger than the actual cavity itself, freezing it, sticking it in there with epoxy and then letting it expand. Then we sand it down level with the rest of the body. Does this sound like a good idea? I really don't want there to be any trace of the Kahler trem.

I also remember hearing something about a cap. Can someone shed some more light on this? Like how I could do it and what material to use?

I'm getting a noise gate anyways, but i just wanted to know if anyone else has has this problem . It is a basic Jim Dunlop Cry Baby GCB-95, does anyone know anything that i can do besides the noise gate to get the thing to STFU?

Much difference between RG100ES-XP vs RG100SC Combo
by '87 sherwood on Sat Jan 20, 2007 8:27 pm
I have a chance to buy an RG100es xp series head but I currently own an rg100sc. Which amp is a better amp? I haven't tried the head yet but I'm wondering if it's worth trading my combo for the head and buying a cabinet for the head. Is there a considerable differnce in sound? I can try the amp but it's 2 and a half hours away so I'm wondering if it worth the trip at all. Thanks.

Opinions on Guitar Pro 5?
by mpire on Sat Jan 20, 2007 9:47 pm
I'm in the market, as it were...

Been using the free powertab program for some time and it's cool and all, but there's a few features I'd like to see (like being able to turn off the other guitars from showing up on the page).
Well it looks like GP5 lets me do that, and lots of other nice stuff too.

So anybody use it? would you say it's worth $60?
Is the RSE available on anything you put in there, or only on tabs that have been specially written for it (Demo only does midi, which, lets face it.. sucks)?

What else is out there?
I used Guitarport off and on since it came out, and that's nice. I like that you've got actual recorded tracks and not synthesized, but there's not the same level of control, and subscription models are annoying (Can't use the songs you download if you're not an active subscriber).

Headstock on Dave Mustaine's New Signature Model - Not New
by Greg Crowe on Sun Jan 21, 2007 2:54 pm
I keep reading all over the internet, not just here, about how everyone hates the "new" headstock. People keep asking why Dean came up with it for Dave. This "new" misconception needs to be cleared up. The headstock is NOT new. It's been around for 14 years. Here's proof:

From a 1993/94 Tropical era catalog(German version). These guitars were made in Korea by Sammick

NAMM Saturday Pictures... Lots of PRON !
by BradWorld on Sun Jan 21, 2007 4:43 pm
Saturday is usually the hot day to be at NAMM. There is a certain buzz on Saturday that you dont really have on the other show days, and this year was no exception. This is a really long post with massive pron, but i think it worth the read.

I have been going to NAMM for many years. This years event was one of the best. There were great guitars, basses, amps, and lots of other gear. But what made this show a bit more special this year, was my involvement with Dean Guitars. I have been playing Deans for about a year now, and this Dean Forum has given me the opportunity to meet great people and talk about the Dean guitars and basses I love. And going to the Dean booth this year was a bit more personal. I got to meet and hang with Brave Dave, and Steve from BRG, as well as meet Dean and Elliot, and many of the Dean Artists in the Booth. So thanks to everyone for being so nice and friendly at the show. The Dean booth was mobbed this year, and the buzz about Dean artists and Dean instruments is bigger than ever.

Now for the good stuff. Pictures. A bunch of them. First on to the Dean content.

There were some posts about this redwood ML the other day. I had noted that I thought that Dean should have left some of the natural redwood coloring in the body. Well, here is the dark one, and then a natural one. Sweet geets for sure.

This is a double neck V made by Bernie Rico Jr.

Image

These are Neal Moser's personal axes.

Image

Now the for BASS content. Here goes... Buckle you seatbelts folks...

The Fender Aerodyne basses have been a good seller for the last couple of years. But I guess Dean isnt the only company that hears "why dont they make basses in colors other than black." This Aerodyne sports a very nice flame top. I like this one...

Image

The only thing I really liked at the BC Rich booth was this Spider bass...

Image

Minarik makes some sweet guitars. Their basses are kind of cool too.

Image

Nice Moser

Image

I love Pedulas...

Image

The purplest bass ever!

Image

Quilt and Spalt... yummy.

Image

Here is a sweet Bernie Rico Jr Whammy Bass... me likes.

Image

RKS makes some whacky guitars. Now they are making basses too... pretty crazy.

Image

I just love spalted maple. This bass was a good one.

Image

Tune basses have been showing up in black for a while. Now they are making them in all kinds of whacky colors and inlays.

Image

I think this is called a BEE Bass. That have been a big draw at NAMM for a few years. And these guys can play.

Image

The ugliest basses ever!

Image

And now for something completely different... the Fooking Fhury!

Image

Thanks for reading this. I had a blast at the show, and had fun posting this stuff for you guys...

Digitech RP150 effects pedal

Here is the product page.

Anyone got one of these and have some opinions to share? I am looking at it because it seems pretty cheap for what you get, played with the various sounds on the demo on there and it seems cool. How hard is it to get those sounds? Do you have to plug it into the computer to do it, or can you get those straight to the amp without a degree in audio engineering? I have a little marshall 10 watt practice amp and the distortion just sounds like complete ass, wondering if this would make it sound any better (I assume you would run the amp on clean when used with this, I am a newbie!). I also like the drum machine built in, I mostly practice without any timing help so think this would be a good thing to help develop timing. Plus when I don't suck, I could record stuff using the USB connection. Seems like a neat device.

dime-o-flame pick ups/ esp kh 602 pickups
by Cadena-chains on Sun Jan 21, 2007 5:37 pm
cool shite to be apart of this....never knew this was here till i got a dime.....i'll probably be askin a ton of questions. sorry for that but you all have done this for years and that makes you all ten-thousand times better and knowledgable....have any of you switched out the zebra neck pick up for another dimebucker? or maybe a screamin demon?

reason i ask is i have the esp kh 602 and the dime-o-flame and im gunna chuck the esp....dime plays way faster and better for me, but the pickups in the esp are both EMG 81s. they are pretty chunky and prefer the sound....dont wanna go active, so i thought puttin in another dimebucker....any thoughts? opinions?

Interesting article about instrument building
by Jag Panzer on Mon Jan 22, 2007 3:55 am
My local newspaper had some interesting articles today about making instruments.

It costs $25 to make a violin in China! $25. And that's a decent one. Not a world class one, but a decent one. The article said that the original Chinese violins were terrible, but quality has gone way up.

The newspaper also did segments on local builders. There are 5 luthiers in my town. That surprised me, I only knew of one. Thier prices were are far cry from the Chinese violins. Most listed thier instruments at around $3500.
Ok, where is the real picture of that blue flamey V ?

Acoustic recommendations
by ttolliver on Mon Jan 22, 2007 6:16 pm
I'm a newer player and I’m looking for acoustic recommendations. I have an acoustic that I’m looking to replace with something different (see http://www.deanguitars.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30280).

My main goal is to just have fun experiencing a lot of different guitars. Right now I can see myself maybe turning over guitars at the rate of one a year. In the spirit of decent quality and still rotating easily, I’m initially thinking in the neighborhood of $500 guitars.

So I’m wondering what opinions there are out there about the following guitars that have caught my eye:

Exotica Dao (or Koa or whatever, sorry, I’m not looking at it right now and I get the two mixed up easily)
Exotica Ash
Psychobilly
Palomino
Others?

I’m guessing the ash is a less preferred wood for guitars, but it just looks cool as hell. There’s a little voice in my head that says that may be the one – although the little voice isn’t helping choose between natural and transparent black ;~)

The psychobilly cabbie looks cool, although a little cartoonish. I like yellow and black as a color contrast so it really catches my eye. But I suspect this guitar might be a bit like a moped – fun to ride but embarrassing to get caught on. How does the f-hole sound vary from a more traditional dreadnought?

The palomino is very similar to the psychobilly, but I'm having a hard time liking the sharp edge on the cut-away. I'd be interested in hearing what people have to say about it, but not sure that it's a contender.

Oh, and for what it’s worth, I do prefer a slightly thinner-bodied guitar to help compensate for the few extra pounds I’m carrying around the middle. So no jumbo dreadnoughts for me Rolling Eyes I don't think there's a big difference in thickness between the models I kicked out there, but any thoughts that way would definitely be a consideration.

Thanks,
Tom

We have decided to not release our demo as is, we want it to be better, soundwise and playing wise. It's pretty good for a first recording job/ demo but we feel it's not entirely "there" yet.
anyway for those of you who like a dose of old school 80's thrash/speed metal we hqve put it for free download here:

First Guitars
by JohnC on Mon Jan 22, 2007 10:29 pm
Me and some of my friends were talking today and we started the reminisce about the good old days when we got our first guitars. It was a fun discussion so I thought maybe Id bring it here.

My first was an Esteban acoustic. It was one of the early models when they first started making them. Not the best guitar, I know, but I learned a lot from that old thing. It wasnt well built, the finish was bad, and the soundboard was wavy, but I still play it from time to time.

What were yall's first guitars?

Black Gold ML Upgrades

Can anyone give me links on Stew Mac for the Bridge, Nut, v-plate, and Tuners (all in black) to upgrade my guitar to pro quality hardware?

My BGML feels like it's cheap compared to my 79 (real floyd and nut and all), and it annoys me. It plays great, but needs an upgrade.

randall century head.,, any good?
by Büdda on Tue Jan 23, 2007 3:35 pm
Hey ladies and germs, I have a chance to pick up a near mint Randall Century 170 II head from a good friend, and get it for a couple hundred bucks.

Now Im pretty happy with my live rig, I needed a second head to hook up to a spare cab I have at home for a practice rig.

Question is, I dont have lot of money to be throwin effects thru this thing, so how is the tone and such with these heads by themselves? anyone ever own one? How was the gain, etc? Anything I should know before going and getting it.- Of course Im gonna plug into it and such first, but I just wanted to know if anyone here had any input on these heads. Thanks.

First off, BLOODROOT: what's the skinny on the 5150's again? I have a guy offering me a older one, maybe one of the first ones for $400. Good deal? it's a 2x12 combo. I'm going to look at it, he says it hasn't been used for four or five years.
Second : I'm getting back together with my old band, reunion ->sans drummer, who will never have anything to do with me again... His loss, I guess. Laughing We gotta drummer, anyway. Wink What the hell, I'm 44, still look good in leather pants, why not?
Third; I am getting a PRS Singlecut. Shocked I found one with a neck I like. Trans Black with two DiMarzios in her, an Air Norton and a Tone Zone. Bad assed as hell. Twisted Evil
Never ever woulda guessed I'd be playing metal/hard edged stuff again. Oh, yeah, we'll record new stuff, too.
So the blues will hafta wait a while. All it took was some brew and some herb and it's like 1984 all over again! We are gonna rock out with our coCkRoaChes out, as Michelle would say!

Marshall Introduces The Limited Edition MG15MSZW Zakk Wylde Microstack

Image

Image

Marshall Amplification introduces the Limited Edition Zakk Wylde Microstack. "Zakk is not only a fantastic ambassador for Marshall Amplification but also a great friend of mine," Marshall founder, Dr. Jim Marshall, OBE, states. "It was over a few whiskeys with Zakk that I came up with the idea of creating a microstack for him and I enjoyed watching my design team customize its finish to fit Zakk's inimitable image."

Based on the MG15MSII Microstack — Zakk's longtime practice amplifier of choice — this new signature microstack offers Marshall-size tone in a compact form sharing the unmistakable look of Zakk's trademark Marshall "Wall of Doom" he uses whenever he plays live.

Measuring a mere 37"H x 15"W x 9"D, the 2-channel (Clean & Overdrive), 15-Watt head powers two 1x10" speaker cabinets, one straight and one slanted, for that classic Marshall stack look. Zakk's trademark look include bull's-eye motifs on the front-panel along with authentic TV grill cloth and gold piping, topped off by gold-brushed Marshall logos on the head and speaker cabinets. Controls include Clean Volume, Overdrive Gain, Overdrive Volume and Reverb level, as well as a 3-way EQ network with controls for Bass, Contour and Treble.

The amp features Marshall's proprietary FDD™ (Frequency Dependent Damping) circuitry, which accurately mimics the interaction of a tube amp's power stage with the loudspeakers it is driving. Additionally, the new microstack boasts a CD input, an Emulated Line Out and a Headphone jack that, when used, mutes the speakers, for "silent" practice sessions (a feature Wylde never uses!).

Zakk comments, "Whenever I'm onstage with Black Label Society I run my Marshall 'Wall of Doom.' And whenever I'm warming up backstage or practicing on the bus I plug into my Microstack, which sounds totally slamming."

The new Marshall Limited Edition MG15MSZW Zakk Wylde Microstack will be available in early 2007 with a U.S. MSRP of $499.

Marshall Amplification is exhibiting at Booth #6440 during the 2007 NAMM Show in Anaheim, CA.

Finally - the Jazz-O-Blaster lives!!! I ended up putting a Warmoth maple CBS short scale conversion neck on it with factory finish no less. As you may not recall I modded some Duncan Quarter Pound Jazzmaster P-90s to fit a Strat double fat pickguard - a challenging task, but I was victorious in the end. Here's a reminder:

Image
Image

When I happened upon this neck I figured - Jazz Master pickups deserve a Jazz scale neck - so I went with this one. The body is a light ash genuine Fender in Siena Burst and weighs a paltry 3lbs 3oz. I shielded the cavities + the jack cavity in aluminum like the pickguard - (no galvanic action here) I installed a graphtech nut, roller string tree and Grover locking tuners. The bridge is a Wilkinson "Modern" two point and it's really Schwing - heavy, stable on the stock Fender studs and really stays in tune for a "floater". . . . so without further adoooooooo - "heeeeere's Jazzzzzy . . . . ."

Our band is starting to get somewhere. I'm on lead/rhythm guitar, my friend is on bass, and my other friend is on drums. It was just confirmed about 5 minutes ago that one of the drummers friends is joining the band as the other lead/rhythm guitarist and I couldn't be happier. He is a killer player. We only have one song as of right now, but people tell me they love the feel of it. I posted it in the Off Topic section but here's a video of us playing our song at the church. I'm the one with the white Schecter Tempest custom. I'm playing through a Kustom Quad 100w combo and i'm using the amp's reverb. The bass is pretty much inaudible and the drums can be heard somewhat. My solo was improvised and it sucks. Laughing I have a solo written now, though.

Bought a Razorback V
by spacebeer on Wed Jan 24, 2007 7:32 am
Hey guys, been a long time since I bought a new DEAN, mostly because the prices seem to have gone up considderably since I bought my first few customs in 2003-04. However Jon at funkyMunky music gave me a very good price on a razor V. I am GASsing on on of these for a long time but though the pricepoint was pretty ridiculous. This however gave me the chance of buying one in my favourite colourscheme black/yellow. It has EMG’s which I am not particularly fond of so probably gonna replace those with a DiMarzio X2N/PafPro combo or some of those new D-activators. I am really pyched about getting the razorback V since they have really grown on me, I am a huge fan of the “old school” DEAN designs but especially the Razor V has drawn more and more attention, especially since I saw the V they made Kerry King.

Anyway here’s a pic, more when it arrives here in Holland!

Compositional Input...Is it Metal?
by BLOYD on Wed Jan 24, 2007 3:54 pm
A few weeks ago I got a call from a member of a well known metal band with offer to put some material together for a side project. Met with him last night to discuss the direction we wanted to take in putting together this band and shopping the material to certain labels. I’ve been out of the “metal” scene for years while working on my solo stuff and haven’t really kept up with all the developing metal genres.

I really do like heavy music if its done right (my ears know) but I’m really not a huge metal listener, however this is an offer with potential so I need to at least explore it.

So over the last 2 weeks while writing this new material I've been asking myself...”what am I writing…is it heavy enough…would it be considered Nu-Metal or industrial or Death…what? I just don’t know. So, this will be a great opportunity for me to get EVERYONE’S input.

Without tagging certain existing styles, what would be something from a new band that would make you go “man, that’s great! Finally something fresh, unique!”

1) Composition (it is a straight 4 piece band…but what about adding a sampler or electronic, syth player?..thoughts)
2) Lead work (do’s and don’ts)
3) Vocals…although this area is in his background we are staying away from the Death metal growl style and satanic references.

Input?…

Anyone on the board have any opinions on this pedal? I was thinking of getting one and running through the loop on my RG100ES xp head in the effects loop. Maybe easier than getting a pq3. I realize this has no tone shaping abilities as such but with a good eq I think this setup may work pretty good according to the reviews I've read on it.

I just bought my ml 79. I was wondering if it is worth it to put in a floyd rose. You are probably wondering why i didnt get it with the floyd. It is because I didn't want an import floyd, I read in a bunch of places that they suck. So will it make my solos sound better. I mostly do battle of the bands talent show type stuff, so i like to make the stupid preppy girls think im amazing by doing simple solos with lots of bends and pinch harmonics.

Like 'em hate 'em, want to see more of them?

You guys have probably seen these new standard color selections for some import Deans. The CGI's and web images don't show the paint well at all. If it's anything like the paint on the pro series, it will be AWESOME, but I just can't get a good enough pic to really tell.

I ordered my Razorback DB in red. *Crosses fingers* I guess we'll see at DOA!

I didn't see any blue ones in the NAMM pics, I need to hunt down some photos. I was just wonderin' what you guys thought...

Weird Floyd Problem
by cowboy_from_hell_90 on Thu Jan 25, 2007 11:04 pm
I have a 79 MLF that just came back from a setup. I tune it, and then play for like... a minute, and then it's out of tune. But if I slightly bump the floyd, the pitch changes completely and it sounds perfectly in tune again. I really don't think this is normal. Can someone tell me what I can do to fix ths?

Not that many care but I am stoked... been quietly working on a new band for a while, writing songs and finally got the last piece of the pie a very good vocalist ( after it seems 400 auditions) and gets what we are doing. The name is Dirty King after the COC song senor Limpio and the first album art is my avatar if you don't know me I'm the guy that did the 3rd track on the first DOA album. Been around the fourm awhile just quiet.

if you dig BLS, Down COC, Sabbath , Pantera you will dig it

Wish us luck

Passive Pickup Help for an Active User
by NAILSPINE on Fri Jan 26, 2007 6:46 pm
I am looking for a really good passive pickup for my Razorback. I have an EMG 81 that I will drop in if it doesn't work, but what is a good one? I like a tight low end, with lots of punch and lots of clarity. Any suggestions (besides the Dimebucker)?
Stripping a Guitar
by Meisterjäger on Fri Jan 26, 2007 7:15 pm
So, I finally ordered the parts I need to fix my Ibanez, and I figured I should really give her a good clean while I'm at it. Also, the lug nut which adjusts how tight the whammy arm sit in the hole in the trem is misaligned, so I figure I'm just gonna pop the tremolo out, clean it and try and fix it.

I've never done this before, am I likely to be going headstrong into something that... well you know. Is there anything I really need to know, and can anyone shed some light on how I could go about fixing the alignment of it and stuff?

I also need to get the grime off it, anyone suggest anything good to it with with, i.e tools and substances to clean it with?

Cheers

Can someone help me find this Pearl Jam picture?
by Hobo Stew on Sat Jan 27, 2007 6:53 am
I'm looking for a picture of Pearl Jam from 1991 and taken in Hollywood according to the Guitar Legends issue with them in it. I don't have a scanner and I need this picture. Can anyone help me find it? I've used multiple search engines and words and I still can't find it. It's black and white, has Eddie Vedder on his knees with the mic stand and McCready on the ground with his guitar, on the left. I've seen it a billion times but for some reason I can't seem to find it and Pearl Jam's official web site won't work for me. Thanks to anyone who can help me or try to.
Line 6 Dave Mustaine Amp...
by JACKHOLE on Sat Jan 27, 2007 7:08 am
This thing is in the works and should be a killer...

Dave Mustaine – Megadeth: We’re currently developing an amp with Megadeth guitarist and frontman Dave Mustaine. He was looking for a way to make a single amp that could do what his old previous amp-and-effects rig could do. This single amp has four of his favorite sounds, from clean to our insane high-gain sound, plus effects including delays that can spill over from patch to patch. This will all be built into a racked amp head that he can take on tour

Dean Y2KV?
by Scrapnasty on Sat Jan 27, 2007 5:12 pm
Dave said that he'd bring all three of his designs to Dean eventualy. Everyone focused on a King V and the Axxion but nobody brought up the Y2KV!

I definatly look forward to a Dean version of this guitar. It seems like its halfway between a sharp "King" shape and the more round standard V. It also looks bigger in the Rude Awaikening vids.

A floyded version would be sick also. It's wierd, I heard someone qoute Dave that said trems are for people who dont know how to solo. Yet 90% of the time in the DVD he's using a Y2KV with a floyd. Laughing

Yet another bill lawrence pickup question
by Hort0n69 on Sat Jan 27, 2007 6:37 pm
Yo guys, my bro has got a jackson king v with a bill larence USA pickup in the neck. But we have no clue what kind it is (500xl or 500r or whatever) and all it says on the back is Bill Larence USA. Anyone know how to identify it? like what a 500L or XL reads on an ohm meter or soemthing? I mean really it wouldnt matter to us what kind it is, but he took it out of the guitar, and one of the wires broke, so now the wires are ony long enought to use in the bridge. But i guess maybe we will have to just wire it up and see how it sounds in the bridge.

tube guruz need some information
by j.arledge on Sat Jan 27, 2007 9:03 pm
i bought 2 boxes of NOS tubes , and in one box there are probably close to 200 assorted 9 pin tubes (all smaller and simular to like a 12ax7) i found a couple of 12bh7a tubes and was wondering if i could test them in place of a 12ax7 tube . they are of a comparable size and i know that 12au7s and 12at7s can be used in place of 12ax7s but i have never heard of the 12bh7 model before .

the other box contains larger tubes , there are a couple 5u4s and a 6v6 but for the most part i have never seen any of the models that are in either box .

i'll take a picture so you dudes can see .

Picked up my RG100ES XP series head today
by '87 sherwood on Sun Jan 28, 2007 12:29 am
I don't have a cabinet yet but I'm going to order the Randall R412CXM on Monday. This head just screams. I can't imagine needing more gain than this puts out with the sustain button switched. All the same people say they're boosting their signals with eq's and things. I'll give it a try when I get my cab. It sounds way warmer than my RG100SC combo. The distorsion is WAY different as well. The two amp might as well have been made by totally different manufacturers. The infamous footswitch came with the amp and I played with both channels on. It was cool but I have no idea when I'll need that feature. If anybody knows please suggest. I played the amp through a marshall 4x12 1960 cab and it sounded pretty good. I read those cabs are a little bright with these amps so I look foward to trying the randall cab. The clean channel sounded good as well. I know now what people mean when they say "welcome to the buzzsaw" or "turn up the chainsaw". I listened to Dokken and Lynch Mob cranked the whole way home (1 1/2 hour drive) I was so pumped up. I'll post pics tommorow if somebody could tell me how.

Is Country Music Dying?

Country radio grapples with shifting demographics By Ken Tucker
Sat Jan 27, 6:17 AM ET

NASHVILLE (Billboard) - When Los Angeles country music station KZLA changed format last August, alarms sounded in the country music radio and record communities.

The nation's No. 2 market joined New York, which has lacked a country station since 2002, and San Francisco, which bowed out of the country game in early 2005, as the third among the top five markets with no FM country outlet. (Two Los Angeles-area AM stations recently switched to country.)

Among the reasons for the KZLA switch: It's increasingly difficult to succeed with country radio in a market where Caucasians carry less and less sway. A 2006 Arbitron report estimated that only 5.4% of country radio's nationwide audience is Hispanic and 2.3% is black, while 92.3% of country listeners fall into Arbitron's "other" category (which includes Caucasians and Pacific Islanders). But in recent years, U.S. Census figures show, the Hispanic portion of Los Angeles County's population (which grew to 44.6% in 2000 from 37.8% in 1990) has passed up the county's non-Hispanic white population (which slipped to 31.1% of the total in 2000 from 40.8% in 1990).

At the annual Country Radio Seminar, to be held February 28-March 2 in Nashville, Edison Media Research and industry trade group Country Radio Broadcasters will present results of a collaborative study of the relationship of Hispanics with country radio and music. And meanwhile, with demographics shifting across the United States, country radio will have to adapt if it hopes to maintain its role as radio's top format. (As of December 2006 there were 2,047 country stations in the United States, according to M Street Journal. News/talk was second with 2,007 stations.)

While most country stations continue to focus on their declining core, at least one has been more aggressive when it comes to attracting Hispanic and African-American listeners. Since the former comprise 46% of the 12-plus demographic and the latter another 20%, Miami might appear to be a bad place for a country station. But WKIS (Kiss Country) has aired the format for more than 25 years.

Historically, Arbitron has tended to rank the station No. 1 or No. 2 in the market among non-black/non-Hispanic 25- to 54-year-olds, according to program director Bob Barnett. But the market's ethnic composition, Barnett says, weighs heavily on decisions made at WKIS. "With zero exaggeration, it's a factor that impacts everything we do in programming, promotions, marketing and sales," he says.

A dwindling white audience makes attracting new listeners a necessity. "With the ongoing white exodus from South Florida--a near 20% decline in whites since the 2000 census was implemented--the challenge before us is to replace relocating white listeners with Hispanic/Latin listeners," Barnett says.

It's not easy to do. "There appears to be a very vocal bias (and/or) prejudice that exists in South Florida among whites who feel that the Hispanics have 'pushed' their culture and language on everyone else," Barnett explains. That bias makes it difficult to reach Hispanics using the WKIS airwaves, he says. "For example, we can't even do bilingual IDs without significant listener backlash."

The station's marketing efforts are "stealth or street-level, so as not to anger the loyal core users," Barnett says.

He is also reaching out to the Hispanic audience through music. "We're attempting to make the music mix more Hispanic-friendly without disenfranchising the core," he says. "It becomes a very delicate balancing act.

"The Hispanic listeners have little to no history in the format, so older songs aren't as popular with Hispanics," he explains. Likewise, he says, traditional-sounding country is less popular with Hispanic listeners than the pop leanings of Shania Twain and Faith Hill.

The good news, according to Barnett, is that Cuban-Americans and many South American Latins who have relocated to South Florida have a profile similar to country listeners. "They're very family-oriented, hardworking, spiritual and patriotic. The themes in country music aren't foreign to them.

"Now that we're getting into the second and third generations of Latins, it appears that the assimilation into American culture is slowly taking place -- as is their interest level in country music."

And what of Nashville's historically lily-white record labels? Might they add non-white artists to diversify their rosters? "That just isn't the way it works," Warner Bros. Nashville chief Bill Bennett says. "If you find someone with real quality music, you don't care what ethnic background they're from."

Bennett adds, "We have Cowboy Troy and Rick Trevino, but not because they're ethnic. We have them because they make great songs."

Barnett, not surprisingly, sees things differently. "I think the degree of difficulty in marketing a black or Hispanic or Latin artist to country radio may initially be too unfamiliar and too overwhelming for most on Music Row," he says. "The labels are more likely to choose the path of least resistance, but there may be an opportunity for a renegade independent label to take that risk. The potential payoff could be huge, but obviously not without great challenge."
