Why EMGs ?
by I M Evil on Sat Dec 01, 2007 7:52 pm
I'm changing the stock pickups in my '79 ML
and I've considered EMGs for a while now.
Mainly because Zakk Wylde is a great influence of mine Very Happy

Anyway ... what are some advantages/disadvantages with EMGs ?

which models are good and which models should I stay away from ?

are there any particular combos I should look at ?

Thanks Smile

Another guitar arrives safely to NY. I must admit to liking FedEx.....as they deliver on Saturdays!
Here is what I woke up to this morning:
Dec 1, 2007 5:19 AM At local FedEx facility

So far so good, and after putzing around in the PC for a bit:

Excellent.

After a few hours of trying to make the not quite finished kitchen remodel a little closer to being complete, Fedex comes to the house.

The familiar sized brown box, but now comes more waiting as it is quite chilly outside and rather comfortable inside.

A bit over 2 hours later, and the unpacking process begins. I've heard of Ian's packing skills, and he packs a mean guitar Smile

Sorry for the crappy pic. It's so cold outside to take a proper picture.

I ordered the guitar at about 2:30 PM on Thursday and received it about 9 AM on Friday. I was worried about it being outside in the cold so I escaped work to put it inside. The box was freezing but to my surprise, it had some kind of wrapping around the guitar that was foil like. When I unwrapped it, it was still warm, and almost in tune. I love it so much. Except for the Seymour Duncan is a little fuzzy for me. I might replace it with an X2N because I have a guitar with an EMG 81 in it already.

The sustainer system is sooooooo amazing. I have some shows coming up this week but I'll get soundclips up of the system. It simulates loud amp feedback on one setting, and the other allows for incredible sustain.

I read up on it and the battery sends pulses to the neck pickup when turned on and it keeps the string vibrating. Weird....but ya, I'll have new pics and soundclips of it soon.

Trying out new strings...but..
by -JiMi DRiX- on Tue Dec 04, 2007 3:17 am
So short story, band tried out lower tuning.

Band loved lower tuning.

Band needs to restring guitars with something a little heavier.

So tonight I went and bought a set of "Beefy Slinky" Ernie Balls.

11-15-22p-30-42-54

Question is... WTF IS THE "P"???

my guess is its because maybe it's a wound third string? (I havent gotten the strings out yet) but "P"? for wound?

X2 wireless review
by goop on Tue Dec 04, 2007 1:21 pm
I got one over the week end but had to exchange it due to a bad jack on the transmitter. I got the 2nd one and so far so good. Very simple to use. I had a Sennheiser but I found it sounded too compressed so I got rid of it. I have to say I am very impressed with the tone I'm getting. It sounds almost like a cable, I actually couldn't tell the difference. I have only used it for about an hour but the tone is there. I'll follow up with more info in a few days after I gig with it. That will be the best evaluation of the unit. I put the link below. The concept is very cool and the price point is impressive also $299.

the self tuning guitar - AP news story
by scot2272 on Tue Dec 04, 2007 1:42 pm
no sir I still don't think i like it

By YURI KAGEYAMA - AP Business Writer

TOKYO(AP) Musicians of the world are getting a new kind of artistic freedom with technology that eliminates the challenging chore of tuning.

Robotics technology developed by German company Tronical Gmbh in partnership with Gibson Guitar Corp. enables Gibson's newest Les Paul model to tune itself in about two seconds.

For users who purchase the add-on technology, the guitar recognizes pitch. Then, its processor directs motors on its six tuning pegs to tighten or loosen the strings accordingly. Tronical has offered its "Powertune System" online and through retailers in Germany since March, according to the company's Web site.

The Gibson Les Paul guitar model with Blue Silverburst finish goes on sale globally this Friday.

Nashville, Tenn., guitar maker Gibson and Tronical said Powertune is the world's first self-tuning technology, and Gibson says it is particularly useful for beginners, who tend to find tuning a headache.

Musician Ichiro Tanaka, who tuned and played a sample guitar at Gibson's Tokyo office Monday, said the technology is handy for professionals too. If they use special tuning for just part of a concert, as he often does, it means they don't have to lug around an extra guitar with the second tuning ready.

"It's more than just convenience," said Tanaka, of Japan. "It's a feature I really appreciate."

The Les Paul Silverburst model is to cost about $2,780 in Japan and $2,499 in the U.S., with self-tuning offered for $900 extra.

Powertune is also listed online for 899 euros, about $600, and Tronical says it can be installed on many different models of electric guitars without leaving a mark.

http://media.putfile.com/Fernandes-Ravelle-Sustainer-Test

Please don't pick the playing or tone as it was a quick recording done with the pod. The sustainer makes my sustain last forever so I am stopping the strings on riffs 2 and 3.

I'll tell you what each riff is...

First: Just the guitar, no Sustainer
Second: Sustainer Setting 1
Third: Sustainer Setting 2
Fourth: Just a riff with some pinch's
Fifth: Just some random pinch's that this guitar can do.

My favorite is the last pinch, its hilarious.

By the way....I replaced the stock bridge Seymour Duncan 59 with an EMG 81. The guitar could still get the same pinch harmonics on the SD though....

by rottingcorpse on Wed Dec 05, 2007 3:04 am
remember when good metal tunes had a hook riff? "walk","enter sandman",etc....
now days everyone just wants to be heavy, but nobody offers up a catchy hook. if they do,its only for 4 bars, and its buried deep somewhere in the song.
dave from megadeth does it sometimes on the new cd. i kinda think trivium has some hooks(begin the lame trivium bashing now).
but where are the epic, air guitar worthy, guitar store butchering, hook riffs?
cue randy davis as he enters the arena. thousands scream as he straps on his guitar. after several minutes of staring at the crowd, looking cool,he busts out the main riff to.........

I cant find anything at all online about it, so I thought maybe someone on here has seen one of these before and could shed some light on it for me. The artwork is tagged "Pristovnik '88" and is said to be as it came from the factory.

Mass update incl Prawn...
by minimimaniac on Wed Dec 05, 2007 5:40 pm
Been a while since I posted any pron for you guitar perves to look at...so here we go...

First off, a lil secret I've been keeping from you mebers...I got me a new Guitar Cool Its a USA Charvel...San Dimas I THINK. Got it second hand at a guitar shop including case for £225 so I think I got a pretty good deal on it...HSS, 24 frets, Birdseye maple neck, Sperzel locking tuners, stock DiMarzios in the Bridge and Middle, Seymour Duncan Hot rails in the neck, Dive only tremolo and the nicest neck for shredding Ive ecer played.

Short Review.

This guitar balances well, its surprisingly heavy for what it is but it's a dream to play sitting or standing. I think Im going to start swearing by Sperzels now, they lock the strings in dead and I hardly had to stretch them in, so they still have that twangy fresh tone. Neck pickup is really nice and warn, roll back on the tone and Ive got a great jazz tone, but really really warm and full sounding. Middle..its a single coil, so it doesnt get much use. The bridge pickup is nice, but Im thinking DiMarzio D-Sonic, any opinions? The neck, like I've said before is amazing...Not only does it look the bees knees with the Birdseye maple, but it plays so nice too. Its got a thin D Shape, and its kills the various Iba*ez's Ive played, like the JEMs, PGM, S2170...To me, Wizard II necks feel like tooth picks, but this is perfect for me.

Ok, time for pron...

I found out about this band when I was looking on wikipedia it was under one of the categories that says symphonic death metal so I checked them out and loved thier music right away they don't have alot of symphonic parts maybe the keyboard player would use an organ preset at the end of a song or whatever but it is still an awesome band.

ok... i was wondering if anybody knew how to "hot rod" or change something on my Zakk Wylde wah.... i want it to be so when its flat there is no effect, but as soon as i tilt it back the effect kicks on... without hitting button....

Reason Behind This:
Zakk Wylde claimed in some interview i read that he uses a wah when he does harmonics in certain places, i figure... when he is ripping them out rapid fire that he couldent possibly be hitting the switch every time... so i determined its hot rodded...

Even if you prove me wrong (most likely will happen) please dont be mean about it... and even if im wrong does anybody know how i could do that regardless? cause it seems like a good idea

Thanks,
- Jake

Zakk Wylde using New Marshalls? SOLID STATE?!!!???
by NAKEDTBONEDTRUCKER on Sat Dec 08, 2007 3:53 am
http://www.marshallamps.com/product.asp?productCode=MG100HDFX

I came across this when I was looking up Kerry King's
signature amp.

Is he really using these now, or just "pushing" this
product for more money?

If he is, that's ironic..... Dime switched to tube amps
after YEARS of solid state Randalls. Now Zakk
switching from tube to solid state after years of
using only tube amps.

Question about guitar setups
by immersive on Sun Dec 09, 2007 6:11 am
I'm a total newb when it comes to guitar setups, so I need a little help. I know that when you get a guitar straight from the factory it's usually minimally setup. I have the MAB-1 Armorflame on order and when I get it, I'll be taking it to a guitar tech to get it properly setup.

My problem is, I don't know how I want it setup. Do I need to tell the guy how I want it setup? I mostly play MAB type shred and I don't really know how my guitar is currently setup (PRS Tremonti SE - I think it's low action) because I just bought it from a shop and have been playing on it ever since. But, I've heard MAB uses a high action. So I have no idea what I want really.

Any suggestions? Thank you guys so much for the help!!!

also, the nut fell off of it too, i still have it, what should i glue it back on with?

i brought it home and put new tuners on it from a Behringer Strat copy that i kinda had lyin around....

Got bored and took pics

The current pedalboard. I'm gonna switch to an ISP and Maxon soon. I also think I'm gonna get a whammy and a delay pedal and maybe something funky like that new boss fuzz.

Image

The Triple XXX. I can't believe how much better this thing sounds from when I first got it. It is a fire breather for sure. I might try going back to 6l6's though for a little more tightness. These kill the JSX, I don't know why people even bother with the Satriani amp.

Image

The HD 147. I got this thing just for jammin at the house and funning around. I'll probably be sellin it soon though. Two heads is a bit overkill. Besides I need some new fx and I'd like another cab.

Put it all together and what do you get?

Got to play scalloped frets today
by BFH on Tue Dec 11, 2007 7:39 am
Image
YJM sig strat. Basically It feels like your fingers are hovering above the fretboard the entire time you're playing. Reminded me of tight-rope walking. Kind of odd to get used to... DEFFINATELY helps w/ bending(Especially w/ the upbends on the b and e strings). No wonder yngwie gets so much praise for his "perfect" vibrato... His strats have even bigger frets, are scalloped deeper, and he has 9's on them in E flat! The dimarzio single coils sounded good, probably the best single coils i've ever played. I can see how it would aid in playing faster licks where your constantly shifting hand positions like in a descending or ascending alt pickin lick. But I found it was actualy harder to do sweeps. All in all is it necessary? Not really on every fret. It would be a nice thing to have on your last 4 frets for high bends or any other frets youy find yourself bending alot though.
Good online guitar stores?

I've been wanting to buy a Dean Razorback Explosion for a long time now, but I dunno which online store to buy from. (I live in Australia btw)

First I thought about buying my guitar from SamAsh but I've read some reviews about the site and I don't want to buy from them now.

Anyway I just want to know if anyone knows any good guitar dealers online which would ship to Australia and has a good reputation.

I've considered Gear Hounds and Carlino Guitars so gimme some suggestions guys. I just want a non-blemished guitar to arrive at my doorstep.

Thanks in advance.

hi.
i wanted to ask anyone that have a stack or a half stack or amps or even a big tube combo, how the hell can you play around the house with 100 Watt tube monsters? this is loud as hell, do you try and use smaller amps? or the neighbors hate you? isn't it a problem if you live in an apartment? because i played a 120 watt rivera knucklehead tre through a rivera cabinet that had 4 vintage 30 and the whole store was shaking!

how can you deal with that?
PRS Private Stock question
by Jag Panzer on Wed Dec 12, 2007 12:04 am
I've seen some PRS Private Stock guitars that are amazing. Beautiful guitars!

But I've also seen some that look almost exactly like a normal PRS.

Hence my question - If someone wants a PRS, totally stock but with a slightly different color, does that mean it has to be a Private Stock guitar? Is a $3,500 guitar going to jump up to $10,000 for a color change?

I'm not slamming PRS (I like them) but I guess I'm wondering if there is something into between stock and Private Stock.

My amp is cutting out at high volume
by Trendkiller96 on Wed Dec 12, 2007 2:53 am
I have a Randall RG200G3 that starts cutting out when I push my master volume knob to about 2 o'clock. I've had this thing for over a year now but I've never had to crank it this much. Just started jamming with a band and... well yeah, I was hoping someone could tell me the problem and possibly even a solution. If i get a 212 extension cab I could thereotically bypass the whole problem because I wouldn't have to crank it so hard to get more volume out of it, but i'm open to other suggestions.

Upgrade : SH-14 (Bridge) With Pron
by raz-zx on Wed Dec 12, 2007 10:03 pm
I got a Seymour Duncan SH-14 off my mate Folky so i decided since i had some time to kill today i should pop it in!

The pics tell the story so i wont type too much, the only difficulty i had was gettin the wire from the pup to the cavity. The hole was a little thin. Took me 40 mins to get it through! At one point i almost took the neck pup out to drill the hole bigger!!!

Anywhoo its all good now an it sounds so much warmen than the stock pup. Thinkin the next mod will be a jazz in the neck.

Let me know what you think!

PS if you look at the first pic you may notice it has been signed by Michael Angelo Batio! Not his biggest fan but hey! Not often you come across one!

Its the best guitars ive ever played ill try to post some pics later. and i have a question about the floyd, when dung sent it he put 10-52 ernies balls on it for me and im pretty sure he partially set it up but anyways i set it to D standard, i adjusted the spring tension and the floyds parallel to the body, the neck is straight and the intonation is right. Anyone know the gear ratio on the Grover tuners
on Dime guitars? Are they all the same? Especially
the FBD guitar.

I read someones comment on blabbermouth saying that Brian hoffman ( ex- deicide ) is working at Dean guitars in tampa.

Any truth to this?
I knew he used to design guitars for BC Rich when he played in deicide a few years ago.

at a KILLER price! I have a gap in my collection where one of these belongs! A C neck is standard on HT's, the v-neck comes on the pro series - and that's the only way to sport an hardtail... I just don't have the cash!!!!! I swear - the pro series are just awesome - I sold a similar ML years ago - and regret it... the playability and rich tone - I can't believe they are discontinued. Bassists look here!!!!
by Lanning is Killdozer on Thu Dec 13, 2007 3:55 am
Kind of taking a different approach to this, but what the hell...

Silvertung is replacing our bassist due to unforseen personal issues. We are auditioning bassists starting immediately. Now, before you PM me, know this. You must have your life in order. Our tour manager is planning a national tour for March/April timeframe as we speak. We are also coming to Canada for any of you who are up there. We are not able to babysit anyone. No heavy drug use or emotional baggage. You MUST be a proficient bassist with backing vocal ability and have your own equipment. We are looking for someone between the ages of 25-35 that looks like they belong in a rock band. You MUST provide your own transportation to the audition. If you are in the Mid-Atlantic area then we can fit you in ASAP for an audition. Pending acceptance into Silvertung, you will be asked to relocate to this area. Don't ask about the pay because your pay depends on our success plain and simple. If you are interested then PM me with your information (myspace is acceptable). Also include your experience. We will contact you if you are considered for an audition. Thanks for looking.

Two trade questions...
by nicodemoscain on Thu Dec 13, 2007 10:42 pm
I have an opportunity to trade some guitars in, and I have some options as to what I can buy. I need some opinions.

1. I trade in my Cadi X and my MLXM on a used Peavey VK 112. (Or even save some money and get a 212 or the VK head for my Randall cab.)

2. I sell my Cadi X and my MLXM and go buy a beat up EVO Noir at a pawn shop I found today. The EVO has a broken nut, has numerous scrapes, cut and dings and horrible action, but is $125. It still looks like the neck and pups were good, but the woman at the shop wouldn't let me try it out. Possible second option for the pawn shop: I sell the Cadi and ML and go for a LTD MH-250NT that looks like it is missing the tone knob and pot. (That LTD was just sexy! At $160, I am GAS-ing hardcore over it.) Maybe for the money I could get from both the Cadi and the ML, I could buy both at once, but I don't know. My woman would kill me if I dropped two geets just to bring two more in. lol

Ok, there is a third option, but it is dropping alot of really good guitars...

3. Trade the Cadi X, MLXM, and my Dime-O-Flage for a new Peavey VK 212. The bummer is that would only leave me one good guitar to play on. ::sigh::

So, opinions? What should I go for? I'm trying to find something that I don't need to put any more money than the two geets I have now are worth. I already have a good amp in my Randall, but I am looking for a nice combo that I can plug the cab into when I am at a gig, but the guitars I saw are were just...well...cool. I'm starting to pull away from the weirdo body styles of the ML and the Cadi and I've been wanting a Les Paul or Vendetta shaped body for awhile now. It is either an amp or a guitar. Any help?

A Conversation with Rex Brown

by Roger Lotring

Ice skates and capes. Rex Brown is laughing, joking about Pantera opening for Skid Row in 1992. The 43-year-old bassist is good-natured, sharing stories about guitarist Snake Sabo, who now manages Down for McGhee Entertainment. But he's even more eager to talk about Down III: Over The Under, the third album from the New Orleans-based band that features Rex's Pantera bandmate Anselmo, Corrosion Of Conformity singer/guitarist Pepper Keenan, and Kirk Windstein and Jimmy Bower from Crowbar on guitar and drums, respectively.

Inactive for the better part of four years after touring in 2002 to support Down II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow, the course of Down regrouping has been mired with the personal lives of the band, particularly Anselmo, becoming heavy metal tabloid sensationalism. But the regrouping of the band has been pure, entirely about music, Rex insists several times. "The whole point of this thing is about the fans and the jams, man, and that's it."

More conversation than interview, Rex spoke candidly for two hours about the past misfortune of the band members, and the new beginning that makes him feel blessed. And the silliness that gets overlooked in the grim shadow of heavy metal. It's about having fun and playing music.
down.

* Metal Edge: Some of this music and lifestyle gets taken so seriously, people forget the bottom line is that sometimes it's just funny as hell.

Rex Brown: Dude, you know what, it's what you make it. You can either make it gloomy, and all that kind of #$%&#@, or you can just have fun with it. And what better fun to do than get up there and turn people on to music, and get the reaction off of 'em? That's basically what this band's all about.

* Over the course of growing older and developing as a musician, has that changed at all for you, that appreciation? Or are you still able to remember what it was like, being a teenager and getting that rush?

Here's one story, right off the top of my head: I'm in Melbourne, Australia, and we're opening up for Heaven and Hell with Dio and the whole bit. And Tony Iommi waves me over. Now, look, thirty years ago, when I was sitting there in some bumfuck town in Texas, and had an 8-track of Vol. 4, or whatever Black Sabbath I had at the time, who would have thought that [I would be] halfway around the world, [and] Tony Iommi's [saying], “Come play poker with me.” It's kind of—it's surreal. When stuff like that happens, I don't know, man, it trips me out. I sat back and thought about it, and I just went, wow. It took me back to that kind of day. But now, especially, I don't take little things like that for granted.

* There's just so much that's been made out of this album, associated with Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans. Before we go any further, do you actually live in New Orleans, or are you still in Texas?

No. Actually, I just moved from LA about a week ago. I had moved out there after Dime [died]. After that whole bit, I couldn't—they knew where I lived. frackin', I had somebody break into my house, dude, rifling through my trash. I was like, I am out of here, you know? I had to get the %$#@! out of Texas. But I can tell you about the whole Katrina deal, so go.

* What you were just talking about, that rush about still having appreciation for music and your musical heroes, do you now look at music differently, or appreciate it differently, after something like Hurricane Katrina or having a friend like Dime pass away? Is music still the same for you, or does it change?

No, I think it means more. I think that this world that we live in is a lot less brighter without Dime, because of some senseless idiot that not only killed [him], but killed three other people. And I really don't like to delve into this, but that's...[pauses] you know, I really hadn't said anything since [Pantera] kind of broke up. I appreciate it a lot more, in the sense that, man, with life, it comes and goes. You're either there, or you're not. And it keeps on going on, regardless, so you need to make the frackin' best of it, you know? [Laughs]

* It seems that work on this album kind of started before Katrina, and obviously concluded afterward.

RB: A little bit of it started before the Katrina deal, and then everybody was so spread apart. I mean, Phillip and I talked every day after Dime's death, kind of helping each other through what we were going through. It was a huge frackin' loss, man. And still, to this day, it just freaks me out.

* The question wasn't so much to delve into that. It was more of a question that when you're creating, and life gets so overwhelming like that—

[Reassuring] I know what your question is. We went through a lot of s#%t in the last couple of years. We lost a lot of loved ones, not only in that hurricane—you know, Phillip and them lost friends that they went to grade school with, really good friends, their mothers, properties, the whole frackin' thing. It's the biggest natural disaster in the history of America, and it was frackin' sickening. But what we tried to do—we got back together, and we had found each other, so to speak. We decided, let's go off [and] see what this thing can do. Let's go to Europe and see what happens. We get over there and play twenty-one shows, all sold out; we're doing a frackin' incredible amount of merchandise a night—I mean, incredible! It was like, wow! Down has never been to Europe before, and they dig what's happening. We went in the summertime [and] opened up the Download Fest. It's like, it wasn't even announced! We got people out of the tents at eleven o'clock in the morning and blew the frackin' roof off the place in front of, I don't know, seventy thousand people. That rush for me is like...[pauses] you know, for Phil and I, we did all that! We had #1 records and Top 5 frackin' whatever. We had done all that; we just got really burned out on the whole situation. So, you know, the last two years of getting back together and going through all the s#%t we've gone through, and trying to make this record as positive as possible—you know, we could sit and be doomy and this sucks, and all that kind of s#%t, which is easy to get into. We wanted to try to make it positive, and maybe get a little enlightenment out of it, 'cause that's the only way you move on, hence Over The Under.

* Was there a conscious point in the process of getting back together and putting this record together that you can remember as a turning point, as far as the things you went through, personally? Was there a moment that was the light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak?

Yeah. I had my webmaster stream four songs, and it really kind of hit me that it was a really, extremely hard frackin' process, because of all the s#%t that went down. I don't want to dwell on all the bad stuff, [but] this record has some very, very special moments on it. [Chuckles] It was streaming over MySpace, and I was going, wow. To come from where we came from in two years, in leaps and bounds, learning to walk again, and then learning how to kind of jog—you know, the band's playing as good as we can...[pauses] well, you're only as good as your last gig. But we're learning to run again, as far as a band, because we were five individuals from four different bands. The whole conception of the Down thing was just like, you know, just jam for the holidays [and] put it out. And now it's become this frackin' monster that fans want. And what a blessing it is to have it twice, man! I'm blessed, basically.

* Is it a blessing as well, that you get to experience that aspect of starting up and seeing success as you go along? When you reach a certain level of success with any band, there's always the expectation to sell this many albums, this is what's going to happen on tour. Does it recapture some of the youthful spirit to not know what's going to happen?

You know, expectations, I don't have any anymore. It'll make you jaded; I don't want to be that cat. It's kinda like karma, [chuckles] you know what I'm saying? I've been in the situation, you know, #1 records and the whole bit, selling out sports arenas. Man, I'm ready to go back and play the clubs and get back to the fans. And this record couldn't be a better opportunity for where my head is at, at this moment. When you put expectations into it, you're setting yourself up to fall, and I don't want to do that. The whole point of this thing is about the fans and the jams, man, and that's it. We want to keep it that simple, you understand what I'm saying?

* You talk to kids who have aspirations of becoming professional musicians and making a career of it, it's too bad somebody couldn't convey to a 17-year-old kid that they'll go full circle and probably get the most enjoyment when they get back to where they are right now.

You hit it right on the spot when you say full circle. That's exactly what it's come back to, and that's a great feeling, you know? A lot of people don't get that chance to do that. That's why I'm saying I'm blessed, because it took me six years to even get my foot in the door in the music business, coming out of Texas. All of a sudden, we were an overnight frippin sensation with Cowboys From Hell. I couldn't imagine a band coming out now, trying to promote their s#%t, with the industry the way it is. Trying to promote that, it's just a totally foreign ball game to me. But, like I said, when it comes down to it, it's just nothin' but about the jams and the reaction of the kids. As long as you write good frackin' songs, which we do—between all of us, collectively, we've written hundreds of songs, or thousands, who knows. With this band, we had all these special little moments, without sounding all sappy and all that kind of #$%&#@. That really is truth. I wouldn't be doing it if that wasn't the case.

* When one of those moments hits, especially during the writing and recording of this album, what do you recognize first? What goes off that you say, hey, I think this is one of those moments?

Like the first time I heard the vocals to "On March The Saints" with Phil singing. It's just some little ditty that Kirk had come up with, and Phillip had another part—a little heavy part—during the middle of it. When I heard that song, it sent chills up [my spine] the first time. This is a year ago, just demo s#%t. I'm going, yeah, we're on to something here. If you listen to a record like Back In Black or Physical Graffiti, or something like that, you know those tracks, man, and you wanna listen to the whole record. You can't just listen to one song. We wanted to make this a cohesive, from start to finish, GOLDARN' just knock you out of your socks [album]. Put on some headphones and do whatever you gotta do, man; you know, smoke a fat one, [chuckles] drink a beer—even though half the band's frackin' sober [laughter]—do whatever you gotta do. It's one of those deals where, that's the kind of record we wanted to make, and I think we did a pretty damn good job of it. And that has a lot to do with Phillip Anselmo.

* In what sense?

In the sense that, his vision, and his focus, and his patience and energy on this thing, I hadn't seen that in a long time, and I've known Phillip for a long time; we've done many a record. To see that growth in him—and growth in all of us, really—Phillip, he definitely had this...[pauses] this is the record he needs to put out right now. And there's not going to be any of these other bands. This is Down. This is the band we can grow old in. If we want to pick up banjos and the whole frackin' bit, dig it. If you don't like it, %$#@! it. But it's still frackin' heavy, man.

* At what point did you collectively realize that, for all intents and purposes, this is a band now, rather than, like you said, home for the holidays?

Kind of like the Down II thing. I had got a call in '98, [and] Phil said, "Dude, come down. Come hang out for a week or so." I was like, yeah, cool. I need to frackin' get out. So I told the old lady, look, I'm going to shoot down to Phillip's, we're going to write some songs and s#%t. And little did I know that, here's Kirk, a buddy I've known for twenty years; there's Pepper in the room, there's Jimmy. We start writing songs, man, and we wrote, like, six in frackin' four hours, put it on some little shitty cassette, and then we didn't know what was going to happen with it. They funny thing is that Pantera, on Reinventing The Steel, we got [Corrosion of Conformity] to open up for us over in Australia. [Drummer] Reed [Mullin] had just left the band, so Jimmy's playing drums, so the only guy that was missing was Kirk. It just kind of took its own form, and we did the Down II record. It was more of a jam record, not so much structured, but it was a chaotic blend of what we were all hearing in our heads at the time. Of course, Elektra [Records] shitcanned the %$#@! out of it, because they wanted their quarterly frippin reports for a Pantera record. You know, the business side will sometimes leave you really frippin pissed. But, with this band, it's one of those grass roots kind of deals. We keep the ticket prices low for shows; we want every kid to have a shirt, [so] we try to sell those as low as possible. It's about the music, man, 'cause all this other corporate horseshit—you know, text so-and-so at Verizon—I'm just not into it. Call me old-fashioned, or call me stupid, but I would rather go see a band jam live and get into the music, than worry about texting on a frippin phone, you know what I'm saying?

* Does it make it easier, that you're in a position where your management is one of you? Your management understands the musician side of it, does that help?

[Laughs] It took a lot of patience and perseverance to get them to kind of see where we're headed. But once they saw it, it was a totally different light. You're dealing with Doc McGhee here. Doc's the frackin' king of all. And I've known Doc forever—never been managed by him [before]. Anytime he's in Dallas, we go play golf together. We were just friends, because I had met him through, basically, Snake. We had just become friends and hung out. Phillip called at a certain point, and he had got through his demons, so to speak—you know where I'm going with this?

* Right.

He had cleaned his s#%t up, and I was in the process of doing the same thing, because there was no way I was going to do another record @#%$@!!& up, or with him like that. There was just no way. So, he called me and said, look, man, I've been back in touch with [Snake]; I never lost touch with Snake. And I said, I got a good idea here, why don't we see if this works? We kind of got together in like, February of 2006, and said, you know, see what the %$#@!. Let's go to Europe, just test the waters, see what goes on. And the response was just fabulous. We had talked about expectations before; I don't have any, because I know in the States this thing's going to blow s#%t out of the water. It's a great feeling, knowing that it really is one of the hardest records that Phillip and I, or these other guys in the band, had ever done, in all different aspects. But it turned out to be...[pauses] when those records are easy to do, that's when you really know that you kind of @#%$@!!& up. [Laughter]

* Obviously, you're going to play the material live. How does that reflect when you're going to hear every drop of sweat that led to this album being made? Is it painful to listen back to something that was so hard, even if you're proud of it?

No, because for me, personally, even in Pantera, there were those times where it's all about the music, and what fret I'm hitting on. That's all that frackin' matters. All of the rest of the #$%&#@ goes away. Twenty-two hours, that's a lot of day to sit around. You sleep half of it, but those two hours onstage are the main focus of what you have to do. So, I've never put myself in that position, where I get onstage and go, wow, we wrote this. I just worry about where I'm at on the fretboard, and making it sound as bad as possible. For Phillip, if this was his interview, he would probably say something different, because he's the lyricist and the singer. But, for me, I do my part and get as tight as I can with Jimmy. And that, in itself, is beautiful.

* When did the process of this album start, not necessarily time-wise, but music-wise? Is there something that was the beginning, an initial idea that came first?

Phil had—yeah, man, Phil and I—you know, I hadn't talked to him in a long time; he was doing the Superjoint Ritual stuff. We had taken an extended break from Pantera—we needed it. I mean, dude, twenty years on the road with each other, sleeping together, shitting and eating [together], dude, in a way it was a dysfunctional marriage. We had a great run, you know what I'm saying? We hit the top of whatever we could possibly have accomplished. I don't know, it would have been a lot of soul searching to figure out where we wanted to go after that, after Reinventing The Steel. There was all kinds of crazy s#%t that we didn't have to bring in, the band just broke up. We didn't have to bring in frackin' Dr. Phil—we already have a Dr. Phil, by the way. [Laughter] What I'm getting to is that...[pauses] where was I going?

* Trying to figure out, as far as this album, if there was a musical point that was the beginning.

s#%t...[pauses] no, because all these things just came together really quickly. But every time I turned around, Phillip would change the whole arrangement on something. So, then we would say, no, that really doesn't [work]. And, of course, Phil: [in halting, deep voice] "Dude, that's #$%&#@! That's where my lyrics are frackin' going!" But, at the same time, dude, it'd be better if we went back to this other part right here. Let's try something like that out, you know, that kind of vibe. But, like I said, Phillip was so focused and headstrong on this thing. He would play me riffs over the phone while we were sitting and talking. He's not the most proficient guitar player on the planet, but his ideas are frackin' brilliant, and that's basically where it started.

* You're describing how a lot of it started out with Phil playing you ideas over the phone. Collectively, as a band, is a lot of this really jammed out when you get together? Do you take all the ideas and throw 'em on the wall?

Every bit of it! Yeah, we see what sticks and what doesn't. It's kind of a weird process, because the two different sessions—or three, I'll put it that way. I didn't play on the first record. But the Down II thing happened so quickly, and so fast, it was just flying by the seat of your pants, frackin' going for it. This chaotic, crazy...[pauses] you know, all kinds of drug- and booze-induced frackin haze, [and] we actually made a frackin' record out of the deal. [Laughter] You know, out in the swamp at Phil's place, literally living upstairs in bunk beds for a month, man, and then having [producer] Warren Riker put it together and make it coherent. [Chuckles] So, this time, it was more focused. I would come back and forth [between Los Angeles and New Orleans], when we did different stuff for the demos. Phillip was dead set on recording that record down at that frackin' barn. And I just said, look, man, come out to LA. I know these killer studios. Come to LA, get the %$#@! out of that GOLDARN' city that's completely blown apart, and let's get focused out here. Looking back on it, I think that really was kind of hard for those guys, because they were away from their families. But, at the same time, it really helped in making this into a quality and quantity record.

* Does that go back to what you were saying before, about not wanting to slide into the gloomy, to focus more on the positive?

Absolutely! And that had all to do with Phillip's lyrics. I mean, dude, at the end of the day, when you lose people—and we lost Kirk's mother in between the process of recording the record. A lot of loved ones have died, man, and, literally, when people were having bad days, basically what it came to was, you grab your brother by the frackin' shoulder, man, and you get on down that path. You get on down that frackin' road, and that's something pretty special. We all could have just said, %$#@! you. At that certain point, when everything is just gone to s#%t, the easiest route is just to go, %$#@! it. Or, you can go the other way and make something positive and meaningful out of it.

* I'll be honest with you, listening to this record the first time, I didn't get it. I was trying to listen to it as individual songs, not so much as twelve pieces that fit together.

You know why? Because iTunes has frackin' changed everything. You buy one song, you don't buy the whole record. You get your little twenty second snippet for free, and you buy the frackin' song, right?

* Some people, not me. It's funny, you mentioned Back In Black and Physical Graffiti, and I want to hear an album...[pauses] it's hard to describe.

That's weird, that you said that you didn't get it the first time because...[pauses] I don't know. I guess you were looking for something that...[pauses] you just didn't get it the first time? Did you get it the second time? Be honest with me.

*
Each time, I'm understanding more and appreciating more. I don't think it's an album you get right away. It's an album that you need to take time and let it grow on you. As a listener, it has to click. You have to be in the right frame of mind.

And at the end of the day—

*
At the end of the day, it makes sense. Listening to it for the fourth time, "Nothing In Return" really started to click. It's one of those things where you have to figure out how it fits together as a whole—I don't know if that's making any sense...

It makes complete sense, because that's exactly what we wanted to do. Remember when the Black album came out, Metallica? Nobody got it, man. They were like, what the %$#@! is this, remember? I mean, I was listening to a frackin' clock radio, and new Metallica comes on, and it was "Enter Sandman." I was like, what the %$#@! is this? Now, it took me a good four, five, or six listens to really get that album. And now, I think it's a beautiful record, [chuckles] I really do. But it took awhile. I'm not comparing that to this record, but just to what you're saying, in general.

*
Right, right. There are some albums you get right away; there are others—and it's not necessarily a faltering on the artist's part—but music is subjective. There are a things that I love now that, when I first heard them, I didn't get. For whatever reason, when everything lines up and you listen to it at a point in life when, mentally, emotionally, it clicks, it's like, oh, I get it now.

Dude, it's like, I still listen to songs, like, you know, you remember your first chick that you were feeling up and s#%t? You remember the song that was playing, like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers or something like that. It's one of those kinds of moments, so that's what you always go back to. That's your route to what you were doing. [Laughs] Mine was Zeppelin and Bad Company, the whole bit, if that has any relevance to what you're saying. My mind kind of raced on that; I drank too much coffee this morning.

*
[Laughs] So, let's go back a little bit: you said half of the damn band is sober now. Are you one of that half?

I am one of that half. Well, I mean, not completely—yeah, I'm completely sober. Jimmy and Phil smoke frackin' about eighteen pounds of weed a day, but it's just weed. Marijuana, I don't have a problem with. I just got to a certain point where I just didn't—I just said, %$#@! it, man. It caught up to me. Twenty-five years of just pounding myself—and I really don't want to get into this hardcore. You can just make it real short and sweet, if you don't mind, but for health reasons. On one hand, you have your health. And the other hand, you have—well, you can go ahead and party and be a fool. Drinking yourself in and out of hospitals, it's not fun.

*
When you're at the point where you are now, listening to the album, do you look at each other and think, good to have you back?

It's nice to see the dude...[pauses and laughs] I made him get in-ear monitors. When he's singing his ever-living ass off, he can hear himself now. The guy can sing like a motherf@#$%; he can also bark like a dog. But when he sings—especially on this record—some of the hooks and the catchy s#%t that he comes up with, it's still so original to this day. It's not like he's reinventing himself, he's just moving forward. As an artist, you couldn't ask for much more than that. If you look at all the brilliant artists that have gone through their careers, they've had certain periods where, man, they were just gone. When you're a true artist like Phil is—and I'll say myself—you're a lifer. That's what it's all about. And to be able to look into each other's eyes and know, without having to smile, or not make any gestures, but just know, that's important, man. And all these guys are my best friends, and that's important, too. This really has turned into something that wasn't supposed to happen. It's turned into this beast that the fans won't let go away, and I love it. Who wouldn't?

*
A lot of people are going to listen to this album and not know what to expect. Health-wise, they're going to have expectations—

Right, you're expecting Phil to %$#@! up all over the place.

*
Exactly. Admittedly, the album takes time to figure out. But it's pretty apparent from the first time listening to it, the guy got his s#%t together.

Yeah! The music that we're making now is clear-headed and sober, where before...[pauses] there's a certain line that gets crossed, and you can't go back, man. Once you cross that line, you're @#%$@!!&. And either you die, or you just kind of cut the s#%t out, and play music, and enjoy life, man, 'cause it's really not that bad. My life is frackin' amazing today because of music, because of all the things. I mean, I've worked my ass off to get where I'm at, and I'm proud of that. But, at the same time, we're all human beings; we make mistakes. That's part of life, and it's part of the learning experience.

*
Do you allow yourself the luxury of listening to your own music as a fan, specifically this new album? Have you sat down and listened to it?

I mastered this record the day before we left for Australia. I didn't want to listen to it after all the mixing and all that kind of stuff, so I let it lie for a bit. And then I actually got the artwork and the DigiPack, the whole bit, which is frackin' brilliant. Pepper did a hell of a job on it, Phil had a part of it, too. I got that right before I left [Los Angeles]. I put it in and listened to it all the way through, and looked at the artwork, and just...[pauses] you know? Two years of frackin' work, and I was sitting there going, wow. From being a band that was not really functioning whatsoever, to where we are today, it's a major accomplishment, especially because of all the #$%&#@ that's gone one—all the tragedy, all the loss, and all the #$%&#@. But we didn't want to dwell on that too hard. That's not the main thing. And let me say something else: on MySpace, I get 15-year-old kids [who] weren't born when frackin' Vulgar Display Of Power came out. I've got kids that want to be on my MySpace, so they can be friends, because of the different music, be it Pantera or Down. It really trips me out, you know what I'm saying? It's just unbelievable, because these kids get it, man. There's a faction of them that have missed a whole generation of the music, because there really hasn't been anything out there that's been worth a s#%t in the last frackin' ten years.

*
Everybody has those bands that they "discovered" first while growing up. Do you think Down is at the point where kids are saying, this is my band, and if you don't get it, you're not one of us?

I think you're getting really close to what this band is all about. It is about the fans, and, of course, you've got me and Phillip up onstage, Pepper Keenan, frackin' Kirk Windstein, Jimmy Bower—they go, oh, supergroup, whatever the %$#@!. But is it relevant today? Yeah, 'cause there's not another band out there that's doing what they're doing. Say this thing explodes tomorrow, and the kids go, they were my band, they sold out. Call me out of the loop, but I think that mentality has kind of gone by the wayside a little bit. But, at the same time—and I might be contradicting myself—I think that it is one of those bands, because of the 15-year-old kids that now can listen to Down, can go back and listen to Vulgar Display Of Power. Does that make any sense?

*
It's almost like they have a chance to experience it, people whose music they like. Maybe what you're trying to say is that there are kids who were too young, so now maybe they're looking at it from the point of view of the chance to actually experience it firsthand.

It's like a new beginning. Does that sum it all up? You know, I'm really not crazy about that whole idea of, well, this is my band. There's going to be all that kind of #$%&#@. That's #$%&#@, man. It's just about the frackin' music. If you like it, buy it, come to the show, have a good time. Come rock with us, that's what we want to do. If you don't like it, I don't give a %$#@!. This is not a popularity contest, you know? This is about playing music that we like to play together. And not a whole lot of people are going to be hearing this music if you're all just sitting on your porch outside. So, you know, at a certain time you have to be...[pauses and sighs] it's hard to explain, man. It is commercial, because it's viable. It's commercially viable material because it's out there on a mainstream level, even though we want to keep this band more of a grass roots kind of thing—you know, like a going and playing Filmore West vibe. [Laughs] You know, we take out a video projector and play a bunch of old videos of whoever that we were influenced by, and then put snippets of the band, and don't take out an opening band. You don't need to do that. It's an evening with frippin Down. You get to see Down. You pay your money to go see a band, go see one band.

*
What you just described, the old video footage, is that something you're actually doing?

We actually take out a huge video projector that goes across the whole frackin' [stage] in whatever venue we're at, and we actually play—it's a movie. We play a movie before the show. It's just old videos of like, anyone from ZZ Top, to Zeppelin, to Montrose—just stuff that we were influenced by, that might turn the kids on and get 'em in the vibe of what they're fixin' to see—and end a clip with us in the studio, or little snippets of Kirk falling down a set of stairs or whatever. [Laughs] Just a little entertaining movie that goes on for about an hour and a half. We want to keep that vibe going like that, because that makes the music that more important. That's what keeps the fans grounded with what you're doing. We try to keep the ticket prices low, and put a shirt on everybody's back at the end of the night. That has a lot of correlation with what we're talking about, as far as us staying true, if we're the fans' band or whatever. That's the way the Pantera partner deal started off. But this is on a totally different level. We're not modeling it after anything, but just that grass roots deal. I mean, dude, it's hard to sell a frackin' record anymore. There's no record stores to actually go buy a record at. It's frippin horrendous, especially for somebody in my business, that that is his livelihood.

*
Even from a fan's perspective. As a kid, I spent hours in record stores, just thumbing through the racks. It's kind of sad that kids today don't have that opportunity. Literally, I'd spend an afternoon looking at the magazines in the store, looking at the records, listening to whatever was playing.

Okay, so what's your alternative? You go see a band live, and you check 'em out. And if you dig 'em, you go home and download the songs. That's about all I can do, man. It sounds kind of greedy when people talk about this, but it's not about the money, so much as trying to get your music out there.

*
To an extent, from the way you've described it, taking Down on the road almost sounds like the perspective of, hey, we're a bunch of kids, and we're playing the VFW hall this weekend!

There you go! You just nailed it on the frackin' head!

*
It sounds like, come on, man, we're going to haul our s#%t into the VFW! Susie's out front selling tickets, and Jimmy's going to sell soda over at that folding table in the back, and we're going to play our songs!

Right. It's a little more organized than that. At the same time, it's kind of like back to the day of selling cassettes out of your trunk. And you want to keep it that way, because I think kids get that, I really do. That's basically what we have modeled ourselves on. Now, if it takes off, it takes off. What I would like to see, I'd like to see Down where we would play, like, multiple nights at different killer theaters. If it ever got to the point where the popularity was that cool, or that we could fill a house—

*
Kind of like how the Allman Brothers do their run at the Beacon Theater in New York?

Yeah, and s#%t like that! You know, like Tom Petty did, what, twenty-seven nights at Filmore West, something like that? Something crazy, and a different set every night. That would be cool. I could do that the rest of my life. But you're still keeping that grass root level; you're not taking it to the arenas and all that kind of s#%t. I've done it, [and] I just love playing theaters better than I do arenas, man.

*
How much of this album are you actually playing on the tour?

Probably half the record. You gotta remember, we'll be playing over two, two and a half hours—I love that! The minute you gotta play an hour set, man, you're just getting warmed up and then you're done. I hate that, man. I would much rather get in some sweaty club or theater and play two hours a night. Dude, that's what I love doing. I mean, I could sit and do it all day, but I'm sure people would get bored after eight hours or so.

*
A lot of this new album is going to make more sense live.

Phillip brought me this tape. He goes "I want you to check this out"—and this is like '93 or whatever, around that time. It was "Bury Me In Smoke," and he plays me the riff for it. I told him, dude, you have to put this s#%t out. I said, you're a dick for not bringing it to the band. He goes, "Well, hell, I didn't write it, Pepper did." But I said, dude, you have to put it out. He'll say, to this day, that I wasn't into it and the whole bit. But that first record was just a demo thing. There are so many classic frackin' riffs off that first record that, alright, there's your selection from that one. Then you have a lot of the good mid-tempo songs off of number two, and then you have this one. So, trying to balance these three records—because we're not covering any of our other bands' songs. Never will, ever. Somebody asked the other day in an interview, [in halting European accent] "What do you think about kids that ask you, Pantera, oh please play Pantera?" Phillip will very gently say, "I'm glad you like that, but this band is called Down." That's what it's all about.

*
Rightly so. One can understand people's enthusiasm for wanting to hear certain things, but—

But that's not our banner, man. We've already done that. We've done it, why rehash it? It was just—man, I don't know. It made me kind of weird-feeling, [voice gets emotional] after Dime was tragically frippin murdered, that all these bands just decided to start playing Pantera songs, you know? Who are they doing that for?

*
Themselves, maybe.

There you go. But it just made me feel kind of weird, you know? I never thought that—you know, I thought at a certain point, for sure, that Pantera would get back together; we'd all clear s#%t up and clean up a bunch of stuff that was buried for frackin' years. And that will never able to happen again, because Dime's no longer around, which is horrible. But just to have the freedom to do this again, man, it's a frackin' blessing, and you can't take it for granted, you know?

*
It's going to sound bad, but when he was last doing Superjoint Ritual, Phil was having some—well, you know, Phil was having some real problems.

Yeah, standing up.

*
One of the main reasons to see Down live, at this point, is wanting to see Phil at his best.

Well, get ready, Bubba. Phillip is very aware of what actions that he's basically gonna have to pay for. And that's why he's on top of his game. I mean, it's just unbelievable. He's in the best shape I've ever seen him in. He's on a workout schedule, frackin' motherf@#$% tries to stick all kinds of GOLDARN' fruit juices and slushies and s#%t down my throat. You know, I smoke cigarettes and drink coffee, man. But he's a frackin' health nut, and it's just so great to see the guy alive again.

*
It's not a comparison, but a point of reference: before they cleaned up, Aerosmith got back together. And it was horrible! Absolutely horrible. Three years later, they were touring behind Permanent Vacation, and it was everything you knew they were capable of doing, and they were doing it. It's almost that sort of thing, that Phil is capable of some incredible s#%t, and people are ready—

I think everybody's ready to see it. I think that's what the anticipation with this record is all about. And those are some big frackin' shoes to fill, [chuckles] no pun intended. [Chuckles] Those are some big frackin' shoes to fill. But, dude, he's singin' his ass off. He doesn't have to—look, we jumped around, we frackin'...[pauses] whatever. He stands with the mic stand and sings, Paul Rodgers style, and just gets it—you know what I'm saying? That's all it should be about. You know, Phil likes to talk a lot, but that's just part of his...[pauses] his banter is a lot better these days, I'll put it that way. Every night that we played, it's been frackin' spot-on, man. Kirk and Pepper drink, and they just drink beer, and that's about it. And that's about the extent of it. We're all on this go to the gym, or do sit-ups, or—you know. I think I'm the only skinny guy in the band, except—ah, hell, Phil's lost, I don't know, he's down to like, 170, just as trim as he can get. The best shape he's been in, in twenty years. Of course, dude, I haven't gained a pound since frackin' high school, a sopping wet 160. [Laughs]

*
Well, that's because all you're doing is drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes. [Laughs]

Basically.

I have wanted a good USA Dean with a Floyd for a while now and when this little gem showed up on Ebay, I snatched it right up! It arrived yesterday and I have to say that this is one awesome axe. It is very comfortable strapped on and the neck feels awesome. It already has my favorite gauge of strings and I can't wait to freak out everybody at church with a few dive bombs!

Amp...unsurity
by Walk_From_Hell on Fri Dec 14, 2007 3:30 am
I've decided whenever I get a job, the next amp I'm getting is gonna be a Krank Revolution. Because I want a tube amp and like the sounds I heard from the Krank (demo not played one yet). But I've heard good things about ENGL Powerballs and have heard those too and like them, and they aren't much more expensive comared to a revolution head.

Am I getting in too far over my head with an ENGL? Is the Krank worth the money? What About Other Amps?

If it helps for sound I'm going for, I play alot of Pantera, BLS, Ozzy that kind of thing, The guitars I'll most likely be purchasing in the future are a Razorback 255 for sure and I've been wanting a guitar with a Kahler and EMG's so I've been looking at a Kerry King Signature V. So both will have EMG's .

Ibanez punk rock special bass.

Today I bought the body and neck of an Ibanez GAXB bass which is a medium scale one pickup bass that recalls Eighties basses like the Aria Cardinal and the Westone Thunder bass.
Image

It had a large chip on the bottom of the body and came without any parts. So I figured to patch it up with parts I had lying around. And it ended up looking like this...
Image

Image
The bridge comes from a Guild Starfire bass, it has three different kinds of tuners, flaked brass pot knobs coming from a Westone bass, the pickup is an active Magnetics P-bass pickups and the electronics are from EMG.

It sounds really good though, way better than any new GAXB I ever played.

plans for the geet
by Black Wolf on Sat Dec 15, 2007 4:13 am
well its frippin cold here in NY which means time to screw with the geet (xm), LOTS of plans, new paint, new pickups, all new electronics, hardware etc

one thing I was thinking of was a fixed bridge, how you guys feel on this, no Floyd or nothing just a straight fixed bridge, any you guys know of one that'll fit with no modding (namely tone pros?)

another idea that was swirling around in my abyss of a skull... how would you think a RB headstock/neck (POINTY!) would look on the ml?
is it possible to get a RB headstock without the dime logo on it just black and with the dean wings though?

oh and a little hint, anyone know where i can get black satin hardware? Very Happy
best theory books?
by punkmetal on Sat Dec 15, 2007 4:49 am
Hey guys,

I'm currently about halfway through an AP Music Theory class at my high school, and I've been playing guitar for a little over 5 years, although only seriously for probably a year or two of that. I'm coming along very well in terms of my theory and playing, and find that I'm only getting more interested the farther in I delve. For guitar stuff and ear training, I'm probably going to go with the Berklee books. For theory books, there seems to be a lot of options...

What do you think are the best books on harmony theory, counterpoint, jazz theory, and the like?

Thanks in advance.

Line 6 Spider II 210
Line 6 Spider Valve 112 (one loud f'cker!)
Laney LC15R (all-tube)

Since I only play at home, I love the Line 6 moduling stuff. Great verstillity for the price, great stuff to goof around with. Of course the sound is somewhat sterile, specially the cleans, so I got the Laney to handle that department.
The Laney is a FANTASTIC little amp for cleans. I recommend this to anyone looking for a small combo to goof around at home. No, this doesnt do metal on its own, but at a whoping 15W it kicks the spider II's arse volumewise.

RAZORBACK DB review
by rabidchicken on Sun Dec 16, 2007 3:05 pm
first off...
i have to say this...
i really dont trust cheap guitars...
not because of the price...
just the playing on them is always sketchy...
the tone is never right...
lots of buzz going on...
i went to the guitar center last night..
and they had about 4 razorback dbs on the wall
so i decided to try one out...
even though they dont have the same neck...as the standard razorbacks do....
it is a awesome guitar!
just amazing at 450 bucks...
i just played one last night...
soooo comfortable to play...
the pickups have to go...
but as far as the playability goes...
it owns!!!!!
you can bend the strings and not worry about the thing going out of tune...ahhahahaha for the first 15 minutes thats all i did just to see if it did that....if one string went out of tune that would be it...not more trying it out.....but the freaking thing it stood up to it!
i probally played it for an hour....
it reminds me of my old bc rich or jackson...
that those cost well over 1000
for the same quaility...
highly recommend checking it out!
Very Happy
Let's see some Faded Denim pics!

I really love this finish and want to use it for my next custom Soltero purchase. The problem I'm having is that there seems to be many faded denim color variations out there.

So... let's see wutcha got! I really want to nail the perfect faded denim color scheme on this beauty...

I've included a pic of my 03 tail which I feel is almost perfect... I looked at three others before buying this one.

Thanks!

oh... I also included a shot of the MANY Dean cases I had to wade through to find this puppy Wink I think I'll take the day to mark the cases with painters tape to help identify the contents Laughing

Orange amps
by deanmaniac on Sun Dec 16, 2007 5:37 pm
I was in the Quad Cities yesterday, picking up a motorcycle for my son. I stopped at a new studio to check it out and a band was setting up for some sessions this next week. I got to play thru two rigs a bit. One was a Mesa Dual rec with a Schecter Damian, or something like that. Not my style at all. The other was a Les Paul Standard with an Orange 30 watt head with a couple of rack effects in the loop. Man, that thing sounded killer. He ran it thru a Marshall 4x10 that was from the Artist model series back in the 80's. Four ten-inch Celestions. Must've been EL84's in the Orange I'm guessing. Anybody got one of these? Tell me about it! Very Happy I only had a few minutes with it.

A New '08 Epiphone Design..HUGE NDC...
by BTMN on Sun Dec 16, 2007 9:04 pm
Third one of these I've seen in the past few days on a couple cool gearboards. It is the latest take on Gibson's Futura, Gibson's first attempt at the Explorer design. The other two were Floyded and one with and one without EMGs. One was Opaque Pink with a White pickguard from 2001 and the other was Trans Burgandy like this Trans Black one below. This one is a lil closer to my tastes with no Floyd but I would prefer a Clear finish or a Trans Amber with no guard and Chrome hardware. OH and Duncan double creams. Rolling Eyes

Here is the two new issues of it.

What Amp to choose?
by Inf3rno on Sun Dec 16, 2007 11:00 pm
I need help deciding between a few amps right now, out of the ones I list I have only heard the Krank Revolution and Peavey 5150 in person. I am also trying to find a good cab, but right now I'm considering a lower end B-52 cab because my friend uses one with his Randall and it sounds pretty killer. Other than the B-52, Im thinking about the Krank Revolution Cab, a Madison Cab, a 5150 Cab, or a Vader Cab (all 4x12).

It was actually yesterday, but I'm lazy, etc. This thing is a monster. The low volume settings blow, but like any tube amp, I guess louder=better. The only thing out of my teeny rack that I'm running on it is the power conditioner. The house has dirty power, you know. The Marshall had a great medium gain setting (that's pretty much all it could do) dialed in using the parametric, but a little tweaking here and there and good guitar/pickup selection, and this'll be right up there with it. Right now, it seems to be digging vintage-y overwound stuff, like the Czaddy with Manlius Wurstkotzenbuckers and the Mock with a Custom/Custom. The amount of bass this head can push is absolutely ridiculous. It will definitely rumble the guts. I'm going to have to either remove or insulate the grille on the cab-it's vibrating like hell! Plus, it does a sparkly, spankyass clean that stays clean nearly all the way up. The 2nd master is cool, too. I've never had the pleasure of such a versatile amp. Wes was over here just a little while ago with the gain on the Crunch channel dropped down to 1.5-ish and had a REAL convincing blues tone with just a hint of dirt, and just 5 minutes ago I had a pretty sick metal tone out of that same channel. The Lead channel is nuts...ain't quite got that one ironed out yet, but I'll probably just end up using it for leads when we gig, so that's what I'm going to go for: an obnoxious midrange scream. It's definitely got a more aggressive voice than the Crunch channel.

Overall, I'll sum it up with 1 pic:
Image

Well, one more pic, I guess. The LEDs are pretty sweet, too. It ought to look cool in the back of the stage once we get another drummer and get back to gigging.

help with crowbar style tone
by Vince on Mon Dec 17, 2007 7:21 am
i got a randall rg75

what should i set it to, to get a good crowbar sounding tone?

tried my metal muff on clean channel and i find it's too nazly sounding...(nazly as in nostrils and how it sounds when you have a cold)
but then if i turn down the gain and the treble or have the boost off...it doesnt cut enough and its very muffled..

tried my Line 6 Dr. Distorto, and i find with tone and gain turned right up its still way too muffled like covering the speaker with a pillow..

i also am borrowing a cheapo danelctro FAB distortion pedal
tried that too...that also doesnt "cut" it...

any help on how to get a close Crowbar tone?

buying other gear at this moment is not an option either..i want to make do with what i have right now..

Went last night at dodge theater AZ. Pretty awesome show. Only thing that disappointed me was Lamb of god being before killswitch which i thought was crazy IMO. LoG definitely stole the ENTIRE show. You could actually hear what they were playing unlike Devil Driver and Soilwork, they just sounded like a bunch of noise. Killswitch did pretty good and you could hear them pretty well. Overall, bad ass show.

The other face of nineties "Girlpower"
by Blazer on Tue Dec 18, 2007 2:06 am
I guess we all remember the "girl power" era of the later half of the 1990's for the wrong acts, such as All saints and the Spice girls because they were constantly in the picture BUT we tend to forget that there were more women who made their mark in those days proving that "Girl power" also applied to the other side of the female spectrum: the brainy girls, the girls who didn't dress feminine, the tomboys who raised hell on a regular basis who just couldn't find themselves in the bubblegum pop that was "girl power"according to the spice girls. Let's all give props to the girls who stood up and showed the rowdier face of "Girl Power"

Such as Kim and her twin sister Kelley Deal who's band "The Breeders" had one of the most fun records of that time. Cannonball

From the more artsy side of music emerged Björk who's music traded guitars in for keyboards and drum computers but they were not used to create the kind of techno we all associate with that kinds of instruments. Of course her haunting voice also contributed to the picture.
"Human behavior"

That having a black skin did not mean that you'd have to perform R&B was proven by Deborah Ann Dyer, AKA Skin from Skunk Anansi who proved more than often that she could rock with the best of them. "Charity"

We can't have a topic like this without the true queen of the other face of Girl power, Kim Gordon of sonic youth who combinded class with the wasted grunge look. "Bull in the heather"

Randall RH300 G3 head noise issue HELP
by mikerockstar on Tue Dec 18, 2007 4:55 am
So my new Randall RH300 head had been working out GREAT for a couple months.

Now, after a 9-day holiday, I return and go to play my amp again....and a huge noise issue!! Not very noticeable with the clean channel, but once I hit the footswitch to the gain channels, there is an INCREDIBLY loud humming and hissing that is almost as loud as the guitar!!

I don't know what it is. The only thing that is different this time around is that I took the wheels off the bottom and set the cab (a Randall RS125CX) on the floor. I was super careful to do it, too.

I have heard about noise issues with G3 amps, but I don't think anyone had any solutions other than sending it to Randall.

Help? Thanks!

Wah pedal is sucking the highs out of my tone
by Trendkiller96 on Tue Dec 18, 2007 5:19 pm
About a month ago I got the Dunlop Cry Baby 95Q and it was working just fine with my Randall RG200G3. No tone colouring while it was in the off position, great little gadget. I bring home my ValveKing 212 and whenever I have my wah up front it totally sucks the highs out of the amp and makes it sound muddy. I don't know what the problem is, I haven't abused it or anything. What could be wrong with it?
moving guitars in the COLD??
by funkify on Tue Dec 18, 2007 6:49 pm
I'm packing up and moving cross-country next week, Florida to Idaho. I have 3 guitars (2 electric and 1 acoustic) that will be making the trip. Each has its own hardshell case and I will be doing the loading, unloading, and driving the moving truck myself. So I am not really worried about the guitars being damaged as much as I am worried what effect being transported in the COLD might have on them.

Is there anything to be concerned about at all? Do I just put them in the cases and load them up? Do I detune or remove strings entirely? Do I handle the acoustic any differently than the electric guitars?

Any advice you guys can share would be helpful... thanks Smile

Ibanez TBX150R Tone Blaster Xtreme
by Hot Sauce on Wed Dec 19, 2007 4:19 am
Played the 150w combo version of this amp yesterday and I must say...

For a cheap low-end combo, you can get some GREAT metal tones out of this thing. I may actually consider buying one later on this coming year. The clean channel was pretty good. Didn't hear a hint of distortion in it. There was a switchable overdrive on the Normal (clean) Channel that kicked in a bit of low-gain sounds. Sounded nice. The Hot Channel gave off a nice 80's metal sound, and the switchable boost (X Mode) was AMAZING. The overdrive was absolutely brutal and yet all notes came through completely crisp and clear.

For all of you looking into a Marshall MG, Spider III, or a Crate Flexwave, I HIGHLY recommend checking into the Ibanez TBX150R.

Metal fans of all ages won't be disappointed, and for the price, I personally think that you CAN'T go wrong.

Cool Maxon OD808 review I found
by Lanning is Killdozer on Wed Dec 19, 2007 3:22 pm
Found this here http://www.legendarytones.com/maxonod808.html

To those who were “in the know”, Maxon’s OD808 was identical to the famous Ibanez TS-808 Tube Screamer in nearly all but name when it was initially put on the market in the late ‘70s and early '80s. In fact, Maxon was the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) for Ibanez and actually made both the Ibanez pedals as well as its own under the Maxon name.

When Ibanez reissued its TS-9 Tube Screamer in 1996 (circuit still manufactured by Maxon), some wondered why they didn’t choose to reissue its TS-808 model instead. Thankfully though, modifications were easy enough to perform to turn the TS-9 reissue into a genuine TS-808 and many offer that service today.

For lovers of the 808 sound that don’t want to deal with modification hassles, Maxon under its own name has reissued its own OD808 pedal based on the same circuit of its more-famous Ibanez TS-808 cousin. The “808” sound overall is famous for its bluesy transparency, touch-sensitivity, and smooth overdrive tone. As tone-lovers, we were anxious to take the OD808 for test spin.

Features

The Maxon OD808’s features are simple enough with controls for Overdrive, Balance and Tone. The unit houses one 9-volt battery accessible by removing four screws on the base of the unit, which itself is approximately the same size as a typical MXR effect pedal. An AC adapter jack is provided as well as individual quarter inch input and output jacks. The OD808 uses a standard, but smoother-switching “stompbox-style” SPDT footswitch and also includes an LED status indicator.

A big selling point to the OD808 is its inclusion of the famous JRC4558D chip, the chip used in the original 808 designs. In comparison, the TS-9 reissue incorporates a chip made by Toshiba that hinders the smoothness of its own tone. It will be interesting to see how the recent-issue JRC4558D chips sound in this circuit compared to earlier production varieties..

The manual that accompanies the OD808 is particularly useful as it includes not only basic operational directions, but sample settings also for use with both single and humbucking-equipped guitars. The manual provides excellent direction in using the OD808 both as a standalone overdrive and as a clean-boost type effect in order to drive an amplifier into further natural distortion. A warranty card is also included and the OD808 is backed by a limited 3-year warranty on all non-moving parts such as transistors, while potentiometers and jacks are covered by a 1-year warranty.

Construction

Housed in a heavy-gauge metal enclosure, the OD808 certainly feels rugged. I also have a preference for the older-style stompbox switches as used in the OD808 as they seem to hold up well to long-term abuse and are easy to replace if they do go down. While I have not experienced problems with the Ibanez 9-series style footswitches personally, I have heard some complaints regarding reliability issues with some of them.

Maxon’s OD808 is manufactured in Japan and overall internal build quality is very high. While the pots are mounted to a PCB “daughter board” which then mates to the main board, the footswitch and jacks are not directly PCB-mounted and are indeed also quality components. The circuit uses 1/8 watt carbon filament resistors to fit within the unit's overall small enclosure. Soldering quality control is high and consistent and it is obvious that the Maxon OD808 will offer years of trouble-free operation.

As with the Ibanez TS-9 reissue, Maxon needs to be applauded for taking the time to produce a finely-built unit that is obviously made to last.

Sound Quality

The first question that came to my mind was, “How will this sound next to an original 808?” I’m happy to report that the tone is virtually identical. I say “virtually”, because there are conditions inherent with comparing any pedal that is many years old with one that is a new production model. Old stock JRC4558D chips from the ‘80s do sound a bit different from the new production variety as used in the OD808, but I cannot explain why that is. When talking to an engineer at New Japan Radio Corporation, he speculated that it may have been a specific “cut-off” point was used in different varieties or years of the 4558D chips regarding tolerances and measurements. I tried to gain more information on what these points may have been, but unfortunately no such material exists on chips made 20 years ago. As he stated, a production chip with a given date code that is even three years old is considered “very old” and is usually destroyed by that time if it is in a supply warehouse somewhere.

Another consideration is that as parts get older, component values will drift somewhat and therefore tone can be affected to a small degree. According to Godlyke (distributors of the Maxon OD-808), the circuit is identical to the original units produced in the '70s that are also identical to the Ibanez TS-808. It may be fair to say then that the reissue Maxon OD808 sounds closest to what the original OD808 and Ibanez TS-808 units did when they were first released in the '70s. (**12/23/01 EDITOR's NOTE: I've examined the OD-808 and discovered that the output resistors are truly the same as those found in the TS-9: therefore the circuit matches the original and reissue TS-9 except for inclusion of the JRC4558D chip rather than the TS-9 reissue's Toshiba chip**).

What I do know however is that there is a world of difference in tone between the newly-issued JRC4558D chip and the Toshiba model as used in the TS-9 reissue. If you currently own a TS-9 reissue and even if you don’t necessarily want to convert it to TS-808 specifications, do yourself a favor and at least get a new-issue JRC4558D chip in there to hear a nice improvement. The OD808 sounded as it should with its proper JRC4558D chip and I’m happy to report that fans of the 808 sound will be very pleased with the sonic results of the OD808.

The OD808 when used as an overdrive, like the Ibanez Tube Screamer series, does tend to favor single-coil equipped guitars. Whether I used the OD808 into a plexi Marshall or a small blackface Fender Vibro Champ, the tone was consistently warm and bluesy. Light overdrive works well for chord work well and touch-sensitivity is superb.

Mixed results are had when using the OD808 for its overdrive with a humbucking guitar like a Les Paul. If you are using high-output pickups (DC resistance above 12k or so), you may not like the results of the OD-808 or any Tube Screamer for that matter when using it for overdrive. There is an inherent tonal “bleeding” that can occur that can sound almost like a clean and overdriven guitar are playing together. With standard humbucking pickups though, this problem does not occur (I experienced the effect with a Gibson Les Paul Classic equipped with a super hot 500T ceramic pickup – the hottest Gibson makes). When using a Paul with a ’59-style pickup, the tonal results are much more pleasing and warm.

The issue of transparency is an interesting one as we’ve been told time and time again that Tube Screamers are very sonically transparent. Yes, in one sense they certainly are, however I wouldn’t say that ANY Tube Screamer is truly and fully transparent - but this is not a bad thing. In fact, where the OD808 or a Tube Screamer really seems to shine is in bringing out some of the midrange in the tone. Where a Strat can naturally sound a bit thin on the bridge pickup, or a bit “bassy” when using the neck pickup, the OD808 helps bring out a much-needed dose of mids into the mix. This really helps leads project out in the front as well as offering a tonal balance with nice sustain and pleasant overdrive. It's no wonder that this circuit was favored by Stevie Ray Vaughan!

Another way of using the OD-808 that is also illustrated in the manual is as a clean-boost. When setting the overdrive to a low, minimal degree and the volume (Balance control) up on full, the net effect is a stronger, more powerful signal is then sent to the front end of the amplifier and this helps it to naturally distort more. In this application, both Les Pauls and Stratocasters indeed benefited from the OD808’s clean-boosting effect. One of my favorite rock and roll tones in fact is when taking a guitar and then clean-boosting the front end of a ‘70s era master volume Marshall. A fantastic rock sound can be used and obtained at reasonable volume levels. For those players that like to play their amps “on the verge” of clipping, adding the OD808 as a clean-boost will push your amp over the top into full-on compression heaven.

A final note to “tech” guys that like to fool around with electronics: Because the OD808 incorporates an SDPT footswitch, converting it to true-bypass using a Fulltone 3DPT switch may be of interest to you. Where performing this mod to a 9-series Ibanez pedal would involve quite a bit of work with the addition of a separate switch that would have to be drilled through the top of the chassis, the OD808 would take to the conversion very easily.

Overall

As of this writing, the OD808 currently sells for approximately $139. Obviously cheaper overdrive pedals are available but the OD808 was clearly made for the connoisseurs of great blues and rock tone. I’m a believer that it’s good to spend a few extra dollars and be satisfied, then to continue to buy something because it is “cheap” and ultimately be dissatisfied either by its tone or worse yet having to deal with faulty operation/reliability issues due to bad quality control or design.

One of the final questions that some may ask is: Which is better, the reissue Ibanez TS-9 or the Maxon OD-808? To my ears, stock out of the box, the Maxon OD-808 is smoother in drive and has better bottom end over the TS-9. When modified to TS-808 specifications however, the Ibanez TS-9 reissue holds its own and perhaps has a touch more presence over the OD-808; then again this sonic difference was noticed when the TS-9 was modded with an older NOS JRC4558D chip. Again overall, we’re talking about subtle differences and both are excellent units in their own right. If you're looking for the "808" sound, the Maxon is the clear choice. If you like a slightly edgier or aggressive sound, the reissue TS-9 may be the ticket.

All said, if you’re a collector and “have” to have an original Ibanez or Maxon 808, look to spend some serious dollars, most of which will have nothing to do with sonics but rather collectability. However, if you’re looking for the 808-sound in a newly manufactured pedal that also provides the peace of mind of a warranty, all delivered at a reasonable price, look no further than the Maxon OD808. For information about all of Maxon’s products, visit them on the web at www.maxonfx.com.
The neck separated on my acoustic!

Evil or Very Mad I'm not a happy camper! I keep my Hohner acoustic in my office for lunchtime strumming. Just picked it up a few minutes ago and the neck has separated! Not worth fixing it as I only paid $10 at the GC Memorial Day sale, but it's my only acoustic! I guess now I know what to tell my wife I want for Christmas. Razz

Took a couple days, longer than I expected actually. The cavity is painted black and covers some things around the outside of it (nothing special). The back plate I used was a sheet of aluminum, which ended up being painted black. The thing was done for a day or two but I wanted to let it sit before I put it. Also, the 'lace didn't go back on until today

My next project is a lot more tedious and I intend to do it all myself this time (no floyd included Wink ) But it does include camo, just not snow camo

Edit: I'm intending to put on black hardware to replace the current chrome, new pickups, ect. too

This Limited Edition Les Paul Custom was bought by a customer who couldn't make up his mind, he had the mechanics of the Bigsby removed played it for two weeks before returning it to the store to trade it in for a sunburst Les Paul stating that he liked Sunburst better.

All it really needs is a new Bigsby but I think I'll leave it the way it is, it plays perfectly normal and I like the way the Bigsby tail looks and there's no arm that gets in the way when I reach for the pots.
Dean FBD ML Review
by yngzaklynch on Fri Dec 21, 2007 12:51 am
I traded ELDOGDADDY my Ibanez for his FBD ML. Transaction was smooth and I'd deal with him again in a second.

First for a few things... He mentioned a binding blem. There's a dot on the binding and some of the wood can be seen. The finish is a little goofy there. But hey if the guitar plays and sounds good it ain't no big deal. Another thing I was surprised to see was that the frets are kinda small. I'm used to med highs and jumbos. Also the trem arm is a little loose. None of this is to bad as long as the tone and playabilty/sustain is there. So I plugged it in. HOLY s#%t!!!! Sounds great! Plays like butter and it sustains like a motherfuker. I could play at my top speed like I had owned the guitar for a long time. I love the tone of thise guitar. Other than the trem and the finish/binding blem this guitar could hang with some of the better USA handmades I've owned and played. I've been playing for over 25 years. I've owned and played so many nice guitars over the years. This guitar isn't perfect but it is sweet, especially for the money. I believe it is my segue into the world of Dean guitars. If a Korean ML is this sweet oh my what would a USA ML model do for me??? Thanks again Loren. You rock.

Help with Spider III 15W Amp Settings
by NastyHaggis on Sat Dec 22, 2007 1:44 pm
I am sorry to ask such a n00bish question, but I am having the hardest time getting a really clean sound out of my Spider III 15w amp.

What I am trying to do is work out some sounds with my DigiTech RPX400, and for that, I would really like the amp to be as clean as possible. After I've worked through the pedal and figured out the sounds then I'm sure I'd want to color the sound with the amp's capabilities as well.

I know it's impossible to have the amp not color the tone at all, but I'm really going for as clean as possible so I can really hear what the pedal can do right now.

Any help you can offer me would be very much appreciated.

Oh, and Merry Christmas Eve Eve Eve! I hope Santa brings everyone new strings in their stockings and new Deans under the tree!

Comparing my new Epiphone Les Paul Custom with my old one.
by Blazer on Mon Dec 24, 2007 2:51 am
Image
My second hand but otherwise brand new 2007 Limited edition Les Paul Custom with (butchered) Bigsby

Image
And the 1993 heavily modified Epiphone Les Paul I used to own but sold earlier this year. That 1993 Lester had a whole lot of issues.

Epi's were made by Samick back then and were notorious for having bad pickups (I owned three Epiphone Lesters, one Epi firebird and an SG which had horrible pickups) which hum when touched and screech like a banshee with even the slightest bit of distortion. I replaced the neck of that Lester and replaced the pickups and pots just to make it work accordingly.

No such worries with the "Alnico Classic" humbuckers of my black Lester. Either I got lucky with an exceptionally good example or Epiphone have got a better quality control than Gibson. But this Lester sounds well... like a Lester. It has that CCR spank and that Gary Moore wail.

The 1993 Lester had an alder body with a maple top and a Mahogany neck. The new Lester has an all mahogany body, no maple top. The Neck is also mahogany. It makes for a rather dark sounding guitar though, the 1993 had more highs in the sound.

One thing I liked about the 1993 Lester was that the pots are further apart. Call me crazy but I loved that because it kept me from grabbing the wrong pot by mistake. The Original neck of that red Lester (Which was an alpine white guitar when I bought it.) had a razor thin profile which I hated because it made my hand cramp up. Ofcourse changing the neck rectified that. The new Lester has a big telegraph pole neck profile which not only makes it more to my liking but also accounts for big sustain.

Verdict: The 1993 Lester took a lot of modifications to get it to sound and feel right now that I look back on all that, I wonder if all of that was worth it seeing how this new one completely outdoes it in every right.

If there's one quibble I have on the new Lester, it's the rubbery feel of the Grover tuners, the cast sealed Gotoh tuners of the 1993 worked better to my liking.

Well, although the Les Paul Custom is Epiphone's upmarket model people still tend to see it as a guitar for beginners or people with not enough dough to buy a Les paul Custom which says "Gibson" on the headstock. (And seeing how expensive Gibsons are getting, that would include a lot of us here) The quality of Epiphone's guitars has improved greatly. Gone are the dodgy necks, gone are the squeeling pickups, gone are the budget electronics and gone are the non Les Paul body woods.

Gibson gets a lot of bad rap on their quality issues but judging on my black Les Paul they made sure that at least the less wealthy of us can get a decent guitar for the money. Sure it doesn't have the elegant "Open book" headstock and that headstock doesn't say "Gibson" but that's made up with what it DOES have.

by Pete on Mon Dec 24, 2007 8:40 am
Hey i recently tried a 7 string at a local music store, and i really liked the fact that finaly a guitar neck for the size of my hand. But i dont mean the Gibsons Baseball bats.. anyway.

Since im lusting for a Maple fretboard, i was wondering, have you guys ever seen IMPORTS 7 stringers with maple fretboard?

Im lusting for one right now, but i dont want to go custom since i already have a custom guitar on order NDC.

Thanks,

Underated Guitarist/Band Thread
by Carlstrmm on Mon Dec 24, 2007 3:11 pm
I made this thread to spread your guys's ideas of people and bands who are HEAVILY underated, and whos talent is hidden underneath the popularity

for now i have two to add

one is Bill Hudson, and underated guitarist, in an underated band, Cellador

Image

and their video for "Leaving all Behind

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X7hr-Ky8tg

Secondly, is one that we all know is amazing, but isnt that popular suprisingly: RUSTY COOLEY
this guy is frippin amazing

Image

Not to mention, his band, Outworld, (which no one has like ever heard of) kicks MAJOR ASS.
There like a combonation of Thrash Power Metal and Prog
its just like, perfect in my opinion.

Heres there video for "War Cry"
(pretty sweet ass false setto in it too)

Heafy style RB run, WTF?
by Anonymous on Mon Dec 24, 2007 6:12 pm
Looking at FOS' numerous threads about selling for store credit, and the fact that only 1 person has posted pics and review, I am under the impression something ain't right.

FOS - why won't Eddie refund your deposit? Or at east half? Other buyers, where are those pics and reviews? That was one EXPENSIVE import, and had MASSIVE additional shipping fees... if it were me everyone would have seen posts about it.

Step up fellas, with the rising price of import runs is the quality really there? Is it Gig-worthy quality? How are the finishes? Does it play like butta?????? Was it worth the wait? How is the FR? How does it sound?

I watched that thread for 10 months - WTF gentlemen????? This is the Dean Forum, and we LOVE our Deans, PR0N AND REVIEWS ARE THE ORDER OF THE DAY!!!!!!

Bridge Replacement on Import Deans
by Tuckerpig on Mon Dec 24, 2007 8:56 pm
I was reading some previous posts and came upon this.

http://www.deanguitars.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=41597&sid=ae42aaae7dcb56e1635a7114ff355ea9

And was wondering if any members have changed the bridges on their Dean imports with any of the ones mentioned on the Guitar Fetish website? I am especially interested in knowing if anyone has tried the Wilkinson Roller Tuneomatic bridges. If you have used either of these products (Gotoh Bridge or Wilkinson) please tell how hard it was to replace the original bridge (if it was actually hard or not). I am interested in possibly changing out the bridge on my Caddy import.

Thanks.

New Pickup day! NDC
by formula73 on Tue Dec 25, 2007 12:44 am
I had these Ibanez Super 70s left from my old Czech V. They're great low-output pickups, which the Cobra seems to like. They're thought of as some of the best PAF clones around, but having never played any originals, I can at least say that the cleans are amazing and since I got it wired up, I'm never going back to the L500XL/T-Top combo that was in it. I've been tearing up some Skynyrd and doing my best Allen Collins jumps all day! I've dug this thing since I bought it to cheer me up on a really, really, really bad day a few years back, and I just found out that while this guitar is a crappy refin with no serial #, it is, in fact, a 76-77 Explorer.

I was a high-output pickup snob, but I'm a believer: low-output stuff can be a really refreshing change, especially if you have the kind of gain on tap to compensate for it Laughing

Unearthed from the grave again
by Dug on Tue Dec 25, 2007 4:28 am
Hello all....Brave Dave, Bloodroot and any other old timers that still hang around. also for any of the newbies that are now around that I do not know, I just want to wish you all a Merry Christmas with your families and loved ones. Just remember that these people are irreplaceable, I know sometimes they can be a terrible pain in the ass, but later those pain in the ass memories are treasures. So I hope every one a Great Christmas.

By the way way I work with a Dean Newbie now....And through an alert ear I hear about you all with the same eagerness that I once had.

Thinking about getting a custom warmoth NDC
by BFH on Tue Dec 25, 2007 11:21 am
Been thinking about getting a shred ready stratty guitar to carry around and hone my lead skills on. I'm thinking White Archtop Alder bodied soloist, HSH config with a chrome OFR, 24 fret blank ebony board w/ stainless steel 6105 frets. White dimarzio's (X2N's gonna be one of em' Twisted Evil ) The contoured heel yadda yadda yadda
Now what i'm not very sure about is ffretboard radius and what neck profile i'm gonna choose. The compound radius sounds good but I wonder if it will be difficult to get used to. As for neck profile I dunno, I was thinking wizard or ESP'ish. What do you guys think?

Got a Hercules wall hanger for x-mas...
by Warlock_340 on Tue Dec 25, 2007 7:50 pm
They are amazing. Hold up real strong, keep your guitar safe and look real nice. If your running out of floor space but have wall space, spend the 18 bucks on one of these puppies. Worth every penny. And if you have a guitar with an ESP EX/V headstock that has one side that is flat, the head swivels so it forms to the HS and still holds it up very well.

Heres my ML hanging high with it's new strap.
Image

And the way it can still cradle an ESP EX/V style HS.
Image

Gonna get 2 more for the ESP and Warlock too.

Then sorry for the shitty pics. The camera was set to Landscape when I took these. below 70 IQ type move.
LOOMIS OR IBBY 1527
by Metallisuk on Tue Dec 25, 2007 9:12 pm
i know some dude just made a 7-string thread but i need some opinions

i've been looking for a 7 for a while and these are the two that stand out the most to me

anyways i have all the cash needed for either [with christmas and work paychecks and stuff] so i am gonna go in and pick up in a day or so i beleive

the schecter has more features that are appealing to me, the EMGs the OFR maple fretboard set-neck etc,etc

but i have not played or seen a loomis in person and i have only played a low-end schecter and it was cool.

ive played the ibanez 1527 and i loved it lots, but it lacks the features that I love about the loomis

what do you cats think?
should I take a chance and go with the loomis or play it safe and get the Ibby

thanks duuudes

Dean Cadillac Tiger Eye Select review, please?
by Harry P. Ness on Wed Dec 26, 2007 7:46 am
I think these look really beautiful but none of the music shops around here carry any Cadillacs whatsoever. I was hoping someone could tell me about the neck, stock pups, sound, and responsiveness of the volume knobs. Also, how's the balance? So you know where I'm coming from, my only guitar now is a Dime-o-Flame (thin C neck w/ Dimebucker in bridge and '59 I installed in the neck). The kind of stuff I like to play goes from Mountain, Hendrix, and Sabbath to Alice in Chains, Pantera, and Zakk Wylde. If I got one, I'd most likely replace the stock pups (either JB and '59 or X2N and SD).

Thanks!

Best bridge pickup for down tuning?
by Serbusfish on Wed Dec 26, 2007 5:38 pm
atm i have my ML tuned to drop C, and the BLUSA pup I have sounds a bit tacky. The B&B in my DFH doesnt, but this guitar is tuned to E, im not sure how one would sound in C. Can anyone recommend me some good pickups that will sound good when tuned this low, or will the B&B sound good in that tuning?
Bridge Replacement Cost For Acoustic?

That Song, That Guitar
by zootallures on Thu Dec 27, 2007 12:28 am
We all have at least one, that song with the guitar part you wish you wrote. It's that song that, when you think about it, you instantly go air guitar. In church, or at a funeral (hey, with iPods, music is never out of reach).

Discuss.

For moi, it is "A Bit Of Finger/Sleeping Village/Warning" off Black Sabbath. Iommi starts with dark picking and turns it into a flat out solo fest. It was 1970 and Iommi was unleashed. Several times over in (my) defining metal anthem. And the tone...
So im watching the BLS vid...

My final (B)G.A.S. treatment for the year(NDC)
by Bullet on Thu Dec 27, 2007 2:28 am
Well I went to a local music shop today. I seen this on the wall, and decided to try it out. It played pretty well, and I've been wanting a 5 string for a while, to doodle on. They wanted $200 for it, I ended up talking them down to $140. So spent my Christmas money on it. It plays pretty damn good, and was well worth the money. Plus the black chrome is awesome looking in person. BTW It is a ESP:LTD B-55

Picks
by benpari on Thu Dec 27, 2007 6:20 am
What kind of picks do you use?

I use Dunlop tortex .73. Sometimes thicker or thinner.

I tried out the Dunlop nylon picks because I realized I couldn't destroy them but just didn't like the feel.
Warhead needs Boosted...
by classic_rocker978 on Thu Dec 27, 2007 7:45 am
Ive Noticed that harmonics... and a More saturated chunky tone in general is more easily achieved when ive boosted it... Im currently using a Boss ds-1 Which isnt bad, slightly colors the tone though.. Ive also got an mxr distortion + from the randy rhoads era, a friend of mine said its better to boostsolid state amps with an EQ? Is there actually a major difference besides the coloration being gone?

And another thing ive known for awhile is scooping mids = bad... but if one were too.... would it be better to scoop in the eq and give alot of mids back in through the amps mid knob? Or boost in the eq then scoop with the mid knob? Cuz right now im a mid-whore, kinda slayer-esque tone but not so middy to where it gets ugly... EQ set in a slight frown boosted hard, almost near the top... if u go too high you get strange ugly noises on the frequency.. like boosting 2k gets u this annoying hiss-y staticy noise... i max each frequency then pull it down low enough to where the certain frequency isnt ugly sounding... then slightly frown it off.... mids around 6-8 trble 4 bass low enough to where i dont get any boomy notes at all, like where u get the note but there isnt a low frequency to where it sounds like a subwoofer? (dunno if that made sense?).... not a big fan of heavy bass on guitars, thats the bassist job? Anyways added bass = added mud... And another question i was wondering does the sound change any if i run the master hi... and the gain channels volume low? or Vice versa... id test it out but my living situation permits me from doing so... Idk if one way works the preamp less and the power amp harder? (im a nubzorz)
Thanks alot for dealing with my annoying questions, as i tend to ramble but i luv this forum so much, and i know you guys will give me the insight i need...
