Guitar sound question
by NAILSPINE on Thu Feb 01, 2007 5:51 am
Has anyone ever had a guitar, that no matter what pickups you put in it, sounds muddy? I have a guitar that has had a dimebucker, a JB, EMG's (81 and 85) and it is still muddy. I cannot get the tight, punchy sound that I want out of it. Is that related to the guitar itself? Or the electronics? Bad wiring? I need HELP I AM OUT OF IDEAS!!!!

by Lon on Thu Feb 01, 2007 6:55 pm
Other than what is on the site here. I've got an interesting trade offer. The Vendetta and EVO are really the only Deans I like, owned a few EVO's but never even seen a Vendetta in person. Those that have them please give me a little info. Thanks! A couple of things I'm not crazy about are the 24 frets and the scale length.

Custom guitar builders?
by BadClams on Thu Feb 01, 2007 9:06 pm
Anyone have good recommendation(s) for a custom builder out there? My current "wish" list is:

Preferrably set neck
P-90's
Tremolo (Wilkinson-lookin')
Locking tuners
Piezo transducer

I'm not aware of anything currently out ther that fits this description, and I figure that a "one-off" isn't of much interest to a larger manufacturer like Dean, so I'm thinking custom builders right now. The closest thing I've seen to what I want is the Nik Huber Dolphin II...it has 3 P-90s and trem, but not piezo and costs A TON/crappy exchange rate for a German axe.

Thanks!

he says he has a dimebag FBD or DFH (i cant remember which one i was too busy going wtf am i awake right now?) and said it is as important to him as his kids. he pimped the mustaine deal and the dime deal and the trivium endorsement.

Bill Lawrence for new Dean '79 Flying V???
by ungarn on Fri Feb 02, 2007 1:22 am
Me thinks my new Dean '79 V (blueburst!) needs some new pickups. I play mostly blues to hard/classic rock.

Would a set of Bill and Becky Bill Lawrence 500XL and 500R pickups be a good match? I do want TONE more than a full on assault on my Rivera tube combo.

Right now I am also considering DiMarzio virtual PAF's, and GFS Vintage '59's.

Thanks all!

P.S. Should I also consider new pots, caps, and switches?

Hoppie Vaughan
by JammerML on Mon Feb 05, 2007 2:40 am
anybody here heard of Hoppie Vaughan, or "The Fat Daddy Band" Based out of VA? He was also in a band called "The Working Mothers" out of Nashville in the late 80's. I would love to get some inside track way to contact this guy. This is as a gift to my wife who had one of his demo tapes when she was young, IT was like her all time favorite music, and the tape went missing about 6 yrs. ago.

I am trying to get another copy of this demo tape called "This House" I believe. His bass player appears to play a Dean Pace bass. s#%t, might even be him, I'm not sure.....

Once again, this is an APB for any of Hoppie's old catalog. This guy's done session work with some major artists, and I bet someone around here may know him, or know of him....any help would be great.

I NEED THE LIST OF WHAT DEAN IMPORTS HAVE SLIM OR VNECKS!!
by nick_allbutover on Mon Feb 05, 2007 8:12 am
HEY ALL!

Trying to figure out which is gonne be my #2 to my razorback!

To be honest I am starting to think I need a sit down axe and try to salvage my pointy for live use because sitting with the razorback is taking its toll while recording!

So, what is the soltero neck like!? Vendetta? Evo? hardtail?

I wanna know what import has a slimmer faster neck than say the FBD's and 79's?

I played 79's, they're ok, but the dfh and razorbacks have the nicest necks of all, and the dfh is sweet if you are dime or in a pantera cover band, I am not, and the razorback is plain sick live no matter who you are, but I need something with the same playability but that I can sit and chill with....Preferrably not a Vendetta, but you never know...

How are the import solteros? Anyone know yet?

Any ML's with slimmer or v-necks!?!

I am trying to stay 100% dean because i am all about brand loyalty in everything I do, sports and music, once I am set on quality I don't change... But I want an axe with a razorback like neck but a soltero, hardtail, or evo body....

Can a dealer PM me ?

My USA Razorback V is in!!!
by spacebeer on Mon Feb 05, 2007 10:06 am
It’s freaking in! Oh man I am so psyched, I just got my Razorback V in my hands. I am at work at the moment so I cannot plug it in or take pics, but it looks like a million bucks in person and it feels even better. It’s far heavier than it looks and the fretboard and fretwork are a piece of art like all USA Deans. It’s so damn smooth it’s incredible, the inlay work is also immaculate. It feels very well balanced which is a very good think since I have had “extreme” shapes from almost any major guitar manufacturer and almost all of em had balance issues. I have to give big props to Jon @ Funky Munky. He helped me a lot with customs issues I had importing this axe into Holland. I have to say his service is incredible. Pics and maybe clips will follow shortly. However I am not a very big EMG lover so I’ll probably wait with clips til I changed the PU’s.

by spacebeer on Mon Feb 05, 2007 6:20 pm
Sorry guys no oppertunity to make pic in broad daylight. So pretty crappy quality. These pics don't do this beauty justice. AGain mucho thanx to jon@funkymunky for helping me out with the customs problems.

It's one helluva guitar with a little beefier neck than most of my TC's but it feels and played great, it's got the classic DEAN "V" neck profile and the smoothest/densest fretboard you ever saw.

The guitar itselfs feels alot more "solid" than I thought it would feel, and it's frakkin heavy considdering the shape and thickness.

Question about Amps
by Anonymous on Mon Feb 05, 2007 6:30 pm
Hello all, i was wondering what is a good 50w amp by marshall that sounds good for southern rock like Allman bros, pride and glory etc. I have a 30w line6 spider with the different programmed sounds in it and honestly it sounds crappy with any amount of gain on. It is difficult to get a good sound without everything blending together, very hard to get a good sound, thanks all.

Which Chorus pedal?

I've always used the chorus built into my amps. Like the chorus effect on my RG100SC combo. What is a good outboard chorus pedal to use with my Randall head? I was looking at a Boss ce-5 or something but if it's as bad on batteries as my dd-3 delay I don't think I'd want it.

Having Trouble With Fx Loop Please Help!
by Savageken on Mon Feb 05, 2007 10:49 pm
Well I got all my pedals hooked up and bought a isp decimator to go at the end of my chain and it works for everything before the amp. I'm still having alot of amp hum so I figured I needed to run another isp in the loop to stop the hum. Well I bought another one and put it in the loop. Now this is where it gets crazy. It didn't stop the hum insted it zapped my volume and got all scratchy sounding. So I turned up the level knobs on the loop and got a little louder but nowhere like it is when nothing is in the loop and it still is scratchy. The amp is a Randall rh200 any help would be great. This is driving me crazy.

which one to keep? pq3 or pq4
by dimebagcfh on Tue Feb 06, 2007 2:00 pm
finally scored a furman pq4, and i already have a pq3 but i think im gonna part with the pq3 i so much love the pq4 it has way more tone to my ears plus it has more range.
what i wanna know from people who own the 3 or 4 or both is whats your opinions on them which one would you keep?

the pq3 gave me all sorts of sounds, but the pq4 is alot to do with dimes vulgar display of power and the randall c200 amps.
the way i run these i was blown away at the pq4 instant vdop tone.

and i really love it more than the pq3 but, the pq4 is way quieter than the pq3..

also whats the peak and shelf buttons do and whats the ground life switch do on the pq4?

and last but not least but the best settings for the pq4?

i tinkered with it last night and love it but just wanted to ask whats the best settings?

thanks in advance and for those who never had a pq4 i highly suggest this over the pq3.

Alright guys bear with me on this cuz this is probably going to be a stupid question so please excuse my ignorance........I've never played a 7 string guitar and have always owned 6 stringers. What is the advantage of having a 7 string. Is it purely for downtuning? Can you play the guitar in regular 440 and then go up to the thickest string and go a step down or am I totally wrong about this? What would be the standard tuning for a 7 string? Just never messed around with one so I have no clue.

OZZFEST 2007...FOR FREE
by misfitz69 on Tue Feb 06, 2007 10:32 pm
OZZFEST 2007...FOR FREE

GROUNDBREAKING ANNOUNCEMENT
PULLS PLUG ON TICKET PRICES

"This will change everybody’s impression of the way touring in the summer in America should be."--Sharon Osbourne

Imagine a day of wall-to-wall hard rock.

Imagine the world's greatest headliner sharing a bill with cutting edge new artists.

Imagine if this brass-knuckled beast was hellbent on coming to your town.

Imagine this earth-pounding event...FOR FREE.

2007 will forever mark the year OZZFEST spiked the concert industry's punch and gave every head-banging American kid a reason to strap on an air guitar with the historic announcement that tickets to the summer’s premiere touring concert festival won't cost fans a dime.

Testing one, two, three...

That's right, OZZY and SHARON OSBOURNE and tour producer LIVE NATION broke the news today at the Concert Industry Consortium in Los Angeles that their 12th annual hard rock spectacular--a 25-date extravaganza launching July 7 in Los Angeles--is pulling the plug on ticket prices and giving the power back to the fans calling this summer’s OZZFEST "FreeFest." The other OZZFEST cities as of now are San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Albuquerque, Phoenix, Dallas, San Antonio, Kansas City, St Louis, Chicago, Indianapolis, Columbus, Pittsburgh, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Hartford, Charlotte, Atlanta, West Palm Beach, Nashville. Note: a final confirmed list of cities and dates is forthcoming.

"For the last few years," says SHARON, "ticket prices have steadily climbed as artists demand more and more money for summer tours. We certainly want everybody to make money, however we also want the kids to be able to afford to come out and have an incredible experience. If we continued with the traditional touring festival model, we would have no choice but to raise ticket prices again this year."

Cited as “one of rock’s biggest juggernauts” in the cover feature of Sunday's New York Times' “Arts and Leisure” section (6/25/06), OZZFEST and Live Nation will turn to sponsors to provide added support for the festival's new incarnation. This summer’s OZZFEST will provide select sponsors with a unique opportunity to engage fans one-on-one utilizing one of music’s best known brands.

"We're reaching the same point we did years ago when kids no longer wanted to pay for overpriced CDs," compares Sharon. "As a result, they found alternative ways of getting music. That’s what’s happening with summer touring in this country, it’s out-pricing itself. We started this and we want to keep it and we want to make it bigger and bigger each year by getting bigger sponsors to be involved with the festival and underwriting the festival. That’s what it’s about."

“For the past 11 years, music fans have made OZZFEST the most successful and enduring rock music festival in the United States,” said Jason Garner, Live Nation President of North American Concerts. “What better way to say ‘Thank You’ to the music fans who have made this possible than inviting them to attend OZZFEST for free.”

To gain entry into the event, fans will go to www.ozzfest.com or www.livenation.com to find links that will direct them to special sponsor sites where tickets can be secured. More details regarding the process are forthcoming.

As OZZFEST’s founder and namesake, OZZY will make his triumphant return to the headlining position on this year's mainstage after surprising fans last year by performing on the down-and-dirty second stage at a handful of dates. Audiences can expect the Prince of Darkness to unveil new songs from his forthcoming studio album, OZZY’s first disc of new material since 2001. While the rest of the in-progress bill is under wraps, Sharon points out, "we have bands committed, but we’re hoping that after today's announcement we’ll have a whole influx of artists who want to be a part of something this ground breaking. We know there aren't any major headlining acts that would tour all summer for nothing, but we're confident we can turn some of the genre's biggest bands on to what we're doing and have them come out to play a date or two. If they're in town and want the rush of performing in front of 20,000 frenzied kids, they're more than welcome to join us. They can sell their t-shirts, CDs and whatever else they've got. They're also welcome to book their own shows in local venues on the day of OZZFEST. I’m not stopping them. People have to be creative and think of alternatives."

Since 1996, OZZFEST has been a virtual breeding ground for rising bands. The festival has been instrumental in igniting the careers of platinum-selling artists like System of a Down, Disturbed, Linkin Park, Incubus, Slipknot, Queens of the Stoneage and Godsmack. Along with supporting bands on the rise including Avenged Sevenfold, Mudvayne, Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage and Lacuna Coli, among others.

“OZZFEST was created to keep this genre of music alive by showcasing new talent," states Sharon. "You better believe we’re going to keep perpetuating that by hand-picking compelling new bands that are hungry for OZZFEST's career-making exposure."

by Walk_From_Hell on Wed Feb 07, 2007 7:24 am
This summer I'm going to be working to buy a new guitar. Probably a Dean ML 79 series. The only thing is I haven't actually played one. I've been to alot of different shops and played some other Deans but I've yet to see a 79. So I was wondering If anyone has one, and what they think about them. Becuase if they're anything like the other Deans I've played I'm really gonna like it and probably order from online if I have to.

Question regarding EMGs
by flah on Wed Feb 07, 2007 4:43 pm
I recently installed an 85/81 combo in my Jackson. The 85 doesn't sound as bassy as when I usually play neck pickups. I like neck pickup lead sounds, think Paul Gilbert, Yngwie, Michael Amott, etc. The 85 sounds almost exactly like the 81 in the bridge position, with lower output.

Is this consistent with what your experiences with 85/81 combinations? Or did I wire something incorrectly? I'm pretty sure I did everything correctly, I took my time and double checked everything. Thanks in advance.

So back begin November 2006 I ordered a Razorback Explosion...at my local guitarshop

First they're like " Ah , well we think it'll be here in December then , because I know it's not yet in the Netherlands , so it might take a little while"

So ...im like ..Ah well next month...I can wait for a nice axe like that Laughing

.... then this F*****Er calls me up (yeah i know it's not his fault but still he pisses me off) and calls me...that I might have to wait untill end of januari ...

So pretty dissapointed...allready put aside money (paid a part allready) ...

So it's januari...im like counting days...calling ones a week or so to ask if they know anything more..... end of januari >_< still no news?! ......So i called up this week asking if they could tell me anything new... he told me he would contact the dean importer (M Works Distribution , I mailed them too but those @ssholes don't respond to me) So i get a call....and now I have to wait untill April?!?! GOD F&*CKIN DAMN IT )*#&%(*#&%

I've allready been waiting like 4 months....now another 2 months ..GRR well ill just put up with it but DAMN IT.

Need some amp help...
by Desdenova on Thu Feb 08, 2007 2:19 pm
Ok, so, a while ago, I gave my old Crate amp to my girlfriend 'cause all she had for amplification was a tiny little practice amp. Well, before I gave the thing to her, something was wrong with it: All the knobs for the onboard effects and the volume knob worked just fine, but the bass, midrange, and treble knobs didn't function at all. You could twist 'em around, but the sound never changed. Worse yet, apparently, before I bought it, the three knobs stopped working while it was set so that the bass knob was basically at 11, while the other two were 0, so the sound that escapes this thing is pure mud. No tone, no character at all, just bleh.

So, my buddy and I tried to crack it apart to see if some wires had come loose or shorted or something, but lo and behold, the damn screws on the access plate were screwed in so tight, we couldn't get them to twist at all, and yes, we were using power drills.

It's been a while since I gave it to her, and all this time she's been complaining about the sound, but I have no idea what to do. Should I just try and pry the damn access plate off the back or what? Do I even need to, is there a simple explanation for why this damn thing don't work? Any advice at all is appreciated greatly, 'cause frankly, I wanna get this thing fixed BAD, 'cause I'm tired of hearing her griping about it. Lol.

really great band !!! I just discovered them by searching some info on Tony Iommi ... those guys were basically under Iommi's wing, I think he was their producer and he introduced them to Vertigo Records if I understood correctly

it's very Sabbath-like in terms of sound but more like the sound they had in their debut album ... jazz/blues influences and hard rock mixed together

I have the Necrothology album which is basically a best-of album with rare and alternate tracks, but I'd really like to hear their other two albums Orexis of Death Plus and Necromandus live

can any of you guys point me out some similar bands ? cause that's the style of music I really enjoy playing and I thought for a very long time Sabbath were the only ones out there ...
Anyone grab the new Guitar World issue with Dime?
by njspeedbeast on Thu Feb 08, 2007 8:33 pm
Hilarious, he is teaching how to play Revolution is my Name on the cd and his amp craps out right before the first solo. He then goes "Beer Break" chugs out of a cup, then reaches off screen to fix it. Looks like he shakes it or something.

Then in GOLDARN' Electric his Washburn goes out of tune a couple times, and his amp shuts down much more.

Also, got some great stuff on finding Randy Rhodes' lost V and some stuff on Duane Allman.

I couldn't find the Dime video on youtube, so maybe someone will host it or something.

Also....before GOLDARN' Electric he says...

"Alrighty, thats lesson number one. Broke a sweat here. *Drinks* Been awhile since I taught guitar lessons, just kidding. *Drinks* Actually, it has, been about 20, 15 years. Lost a couple in there somewhere"

I like to listen to guys like Malmsteen, Lynch, Petrucci, Vai, and Satriani shred, but I prefer more relaxed David Gilmour like stuff. I do realize that these guys can slow it down and play some great stuff (Tender Surrender; Icarus Dream Suite Op. 5; Always with Me, Always with You) but the majority of the time they are playing like their hands are on fire. Especially Donut Man.

How Long Did It Take For You To Actually Be Considered Good?
by Johnny Wunderboy on Fri Feb 09, 2007 8:16 am
Hey,
I've been playing a little over 2 years now, and I was just thinking if '2 years' was the general threshold of maturing from the 'beginner' stage.
I wouldn't really know, as I don't live in very guitar/rock music oriented place, so I guess the internet is the only place I can interact with other guitar players and musicians.
Playing for 2 years, I feel that I'm not really getting anywhere; I don't seem to be able to build up my speed and skill. I don't know if I should be worrying about complex techniques such as sweep picking, rapid licks, accurate two-hand tapping and such, yet.
I know it all depends on practice-regimen, but how exactly is the best way to practice?
What are your thoughts? How long have you been playing the guitar? Have you any useful tips when practicing?

Edit: How important is theory in your opinion? Would it be a waste of time trying to put alot of effort into learning how to read proper music?

Shown below is what the photo looks like, it was taken by me during Ozzfest 2005, and is printed on "metallic paper", which is EXTREMELY cool looking.

John's 3rd solo album "The Devil Knows My Name" will be released April 3, and features guest appearances by: Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society, Ozzy Osbourne), Joe Satriani, Tommy Clufetos (Rob Zombie, ex-Alice Cooper), Piggy D. (Rob Zombie), and Matt Bissonette (David Lee Roth), among others.

You can order the photos here:

This is the 2nd promo photo I have worked with John on, you can also still purchase the 1st one we did together in his store, it's a black and white shown below limited to 250 pieces. This one was taken by me while John was still with Marilyn Manson during the 2003 Ozzfest one day immediately after John had walked off stage.

Help selecting speakers (getting an Avatar 412 Cab)
by dan_plus_o on Sat Feb 10, 2007 12:59 am
Hello, I am going to be getting an Avatar 412 cab from www.steamcomusic.com and I was hoping some one could help me pick which speakers to get. I am mainly interested in the Vintage 30, G12T-75, and G12T-100. I have the option to get G12T-75s or G12T100s. Should I even consider getting the G12T-75s or are the G12T-100s better sounding (and of course more power). So I am either thinking about getting 4 G12T-100s or 2 G12T-100s with 2 Vintage 30s. I had two Hellatone 60Ls in my last cab (212) and I found it hard to get good highs out of it. When I turned up the highs on the amp it would make crackling noises on the higher notes. So I don't know if it was my amp or if the speakers weren't good with the high frequencies. My amp did have a problem with it before (broken solder joint), so it's possible there is something else wrong with it.

I have a Peavey XXL 100 watt head and I play lots of metal. My amp is only 100 watts so will it matter if I run a 400 Watt cab through a 100 watt head? Will having a 400 watt cab with my amp sound better then a 200 watt cab? Does it mater? Just as long as the cab can handle the power from the amp, right?

Whats wrong with Music stores?
by '87 sherwood on Sat Feb 10, 2007 2:29 pm
I find a music store in Canada that sells Deans for a competitive price with what they're going for in the States. I ask for a price on the razorbacks and the FBD. I get the price for the FBD and the Razorback back price depends on which one apparently. I write back naming the exact razor and get no response. Than I write again requesting the price on the razor and if the prices include cases. He writes back; "guitars come shipped in cardboard box with accessories. Guitar case price is dependant on which guitar you buy. " He didn't even give me a range on the cases. So you know what? He just lost a sale becuase I'm tired of they're stupid answers.

This shop is not a forum dealer. I've gotten only steller responses from forum dealers. It's the charge at the boarder that concern's me.

Ok this is totally fcking ridiculous. My 79 MLF goes into a repair shop for 3 weeks for a setup and some fret work. It comes back, and my floyd is @#%$@!!&. Depending on which way I use the whammy bar it returns to different original positions. I take it in under warranty, FIGHT with the bastard FOR the warranty, leave it there for ANOTHER 2 weeks and lo and behold, it's as if they didn't do anything while it was in there. I'm so fcking pissed off right now. I'm honestly thinking of selling it and dumping all the cash into the gibson explorer in my closet.

Line 6
by Warlock_340 on Sun Feb 11, 2007 6:20 pm
OK, I've heard lots of bias opinions on Line 6. Many people say they're s#%t. Though yesterday I was at guitar center, took a Schenker V, plugged it into 2 Line 6 amps, and was blown away by the sound and options it gave. Then I took a Metalman Bass Z, plugged that into a Line 6, and I was yet again blown away by the sound and options. I asked an employee at GC, he said they're great amps for the money, and he owns one.

Now, will someone whose not a complete retard and isn't bias on amps please tell me the truth about these troopers cause I have no idea why everyone bitches about them. (No offense to Line 6 haters, everyones entitled to there own opinion.)

Vendettas (3.0, 4.0)
by New Found Power on Sun Feb 11, 2007 10:12 pm
Can some people post some good pictures and answer some questions about Dean Vendettas, 3.0 and 4.0? I'm lookin for my next guitar and I am Considering one of these. (Except for the Tiger Eye finish.)
Questions,
1. How thick are the necks anywhere near the 79's, or like a thin "C"? (maybe post a side profile pic of the neck near the first and twelfth frets)
2. How's the stock hardware, pups, bridge, tuners, etc...?
3. Are the frets jumbo's?
4. Can I get a 3.0 in black?

Sorry If I am asking a bit much, Embarassed but I am having a real hard time deciding on which guitar to get, a Vendetta or another X-50?
I already own the X-50 and I know I like it, and if the Vendetta is somewhat similar I know I will like it too.

Thanks in advance Very Happy
How does one go about getting a custom Dean?
by cowboy_from_hell_90 on Mon Feb 12, 2007 12:44 am
Hey guys, I wanted to know where I could go to scope the price of a custom USA MLF. Nothing really fancy. Just all black with an OFR, cream binding and ebony board.

OR, if it's possible, to find a Time Capsule that's floyded with an original. On the home page I don't see any TCs that are floyded, but on sites like carlinos you can find floyded TCs so I thought I'd ask. In this case, I wouldn't have to be redrilling anything replacing a chrome OFR with a black one would I?

Thx guys.

by DeanMann on Mon Feb 12, 2007 3:21 am
Went to see Bob Seger last night and was major league impressed.

I have ALWAYS been a Seger fan but never had the chance to see him "back in the day" so when the chance came up, I jumped.

The show was at Alltel Arena in North Little Rock Arkansas, which is an okay venue, not stellar for sound. About 16,000 were in attendance.

Bob is getting a little long in the tooth so to say, but still is true to his roots. Now days his sound lends towards the country crowd, but it was a very diverse bunch of folks in the audience. All ages and backgrounds. Biker guys, business women & men and just plain average Joe kinda people.

The thing that amazed me was that most folks came in from all over. We traveled 3 hours and were fortunate to find a hotel room. (The Peabody in Little Rock)

A friend of mine is the director of the sales inside the arena and told me that the Hotels in Little Rock / North Little Rock were pretty much full up with folks comming in for the show. Most shows are attended by locals so the Hotels don't see the impact of a concert, but not for this one.

Anyway, Alto Reed is still in the band as are several other old time "Silver Bullet Band" members.

The band was about as good as it gets. Professional, energetic and DEAD ON! Harmonys were PERFECT!

I had an excellent time and went away feeling that was one of the best shows I have ever been to in my life. Seger knows how to put on a show, even if he is carrying an AARP card.

If you have the luxury of being in a city where Seger is playing, PLEASE!! DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GO SEE BOB SEGER! He's in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for a reason!

Japanese Soltero vs. USA Soltero & no# Soltero Jr.

What can you tell me about the Japanese made Soltero as compared to the USA model? I can’t come up with the cash’ola for the # USA model but I am liking the single cut of this guitar.

Does anyone know if Dean is going to make a regular production Soltero Jr. (Leslie West) model?

Anyone?

POD XT LIVE Noise gate
by Mingeeta on Tue Feb 13, 2007 12:52 am
Is actually quite bad

I notice it a lot when recording but it's not too much of a problem because I can just edit out the noise with cubase. However, I've now noticed that it's a problem when playing live.

So errr has anyone got any advice on how to get it sounding better, or should I purchase a separate noise gate?

International shipping of an ML - pitfalls?
by lars667 on Tue Feb 13, 2007 4:34 pm
I just bought a TC ML from a fellow forum member. He's located in USA, I'm located in Norway. I have paid $125 to cover shipping, which I estimated roughly to be about $110 via USPS air parcel (non express), based on the guitar/hardcase weighing in at about 30 lbs. (Is this too high, or maybe too low for the USA hardcase and ML?) Is USPS best bet for the money, or are there other convenient options?

The seller will be sending the guitar in the original hardcase and box. I was just wondering if there's anything we should be looking out for here. I have received a DFH/CFH via USPS before, so I'm pretty sure they accept parcels this size, but I'm not sure how the store shipped the guitar etc. on their side. They may have had some special arrangement for all I know (I think they did), so it might not apply to individuals.

From what I've heard previously about wrapping the guitar, it is most effective to wrap it on the outside the case (bubblewrap etc.), while letting the guitar sit slightly loose (normal) in the case. If the case flexes, this still leaves some space for the guitar. How about the use of "pop corns" etc.?

Anyway, I'm just looking for some advice when shipping the ML from USA, just to make everything as smooth as possible for the seller and me Smile The ML is a very large guitar, so there might be special concerns for that too.

Thanks.

review of the SLC utah Machine head show (bucketass)
by Büdda on Tue Feb 13, 2007 10:33 pm
SO I finally got to meet Randy Davis in person. It was a very cool meet. Not only di I get greeted with a couple hugs and laughter, but Randy has got to be one of the coolest guys to hang out with.

On to the show....

AS the entire club was chanting "Machine @#$% Head" - Machine head came out pummeling. Ripping through the first three songs before anyone knew what hit us. The club was packaed A$$holes and elbows. approx 350 people easily. After a few more tunes, Machine head then whipped out the covers- They played a couple fo Maiden tunes, a verse and chorus of creeping death, and a couple of pantera tunes. The sound was incredible (as is always @ Club Vegas) the guitar tones were great, (very yummy as my friend and fellow band mates Klint and freddy had said)

Rob said on the mic that they hadnt toured in 8 months- I couldnt tell. They were tight, and everything sounded spot on tone and sound wise. I was sooooooooo impressed.

Unfortunately, The club wouldnt let us bring a camera in (which I find a bit odd as we were there as VIP's (thanks to Mr Randy Davis- Kudos man We love ya for it!) but then again they even made me take of my wallet chain "for safety". So no pics from the show, except for the slight possibility that Klint got some on his cell phone, but the crowd and pit was moving around so much Im sure it was really hard to get a clear shot of anyone on stage.

The crowd was insane, no trouble I spotted through out the night, every one actually getting along and having a good time. Lots o Beer and shots of Jager and crown.

Overall the concert was sick and worth the crap we had to wade through to get to the club (the trolley square mall shooting thing (Im sure some of you have read or seen it on the news) was unfolding only a few blocks away form the club. )

Insane night and lots of fun. Thanks again to Randy and the guys from Machine head We love you guys and were more than happy to have you kick SLC's A$$! Wink

Can I just use a head?
by 1,000 Watts on Wed Feb 14, 2007 2:03 am
Okay...i'm broke..as many of you know....I have an ibanez...and i'm looking to upgrade my amp before upgrading to Dean...

SO, I was wondering what a good head would be to use because, generally, head's don't seem to cost as much as the amp's I've seen..

I'm looking to get a Tube head and then later buy some cabinets for it....but that arises another question...all cabinets are the same right..there aren't like...different types of speakers, right? As in Tube/Solid State, I mean......

Thanks for all the help. Smile

P.S. I forgot to add my main question: Can you use a head w/o cabinets and still have it work great...or does it NEED to get plugged into cabinets?

Thanks.

Dean ML 79' Reissue.... Update
by satch0922 on Thu Feb 15, 2007 2:07 am
Several months ago I bought a Dean ML 79'. I just put it down after an hour or so of jamming and thought I would post an update or "review". (My other guitars, 93 Les Paul, 94 Jackson Rhoads jrr94, 97 Fender Strat, 2001 Jackson Rhoads RR3, 2005 Yamaha AES720)

Everytime I play the ML I have a BLAST. The neck is super fast, the guitar is very well balanced and it looks sweet. The set neck, white binding and overall build are quality. I did replace the pick ups however even before that I really enjoyed the feel of this guitar.

If anyone is surfing these forums and thinking of getting an ML...I can testify that the import set neck guitars are lots of fun and lots of guitar for the money. You will be glad you bought this guitar.

Got this Valve king on Ebay. It arrived wrapped in cardboard with no packing material. Naturally there is a crack in the wood where the box and amp hit the floor. Not just a little crack, the whole side is split. The amp works fine other than the obvious damage.

I emailed the seller about it and he offered either a full refund minus shipping charges or a $75 partial refund.

If I take the $75 partial refund, I paid $350 for a busted up amp, If I send it back I lose alomst $100 in shipping charges with nothing to show for it but aggrivation.

What would your next move be?

Great Dean Brothers (long)
by Lon on Thu Feb 15, 2007 2:20 pm
I've had a lot of good dealings with people here over the years. A few cross words as well but nothing that everyone involved didn't get over. As you know I buy/sell/trade a lot of guitars. I've given a couple to guys here and received a little Marshall amp free as well. What happened to me this week was special though. I had my Strat up for trade here and got LOTS of offers from lots of good people. Trapper189 though really got my attention with his 77 Carvin CM130. I'm a self confessed Carvin freak. Love them. I really wanted a setneck guitar though so I kept looking. He was persistent. Smile He offered me what appeared to be an EVO Special that needed a fair amount of work as well as a couple of other setneck guitars, all very nice. To be honest my head was spinning as I really hadn't expected so many people to want my Strat. Too many decisions! From reading his posts over the years though I knew he was a stand up guy and I really couldn't get the Carvin out of my head so I went back to his offer. He knows I like to tinker with guitars so he told me this...."I'll tell you what. I'll send you the eVo with a new Tung Sol bridge with studs and inserts from another guitar (which I'll put the Gotoh on eventually). I'll keep the Duncan pickups, but send the originals and the Schaller pickups from my eVo Deluxe/Premium hybrid. Here's the best part, because I know you like a good deal, free." Shocked Too cool for words right? Here's the best part. I get the Carvin and it's way better than I expected. I've done my work on it and it's up and ready to rock. So yesterday the big brown truck arrives with the EVO. I'm not expecting much other than a guitar that needs a lot of work, but since the EVO is far and away my favorite Dean shape I'm still excited. I get it out of the box and am floored. Other than needing some rewiring, knobs, and a good fret polish this thing is MINT. SO let me finish this ramble by stating the obvious...there's still classy guys out there, and Chris is one of them! Thanks a MILLION!!

to sell so many pieces of the NAMM booth to every OTHER dealer than our local forum dealers?

I was offering money out the arse for a NAMM piece, and they all went to dealers I wouldn't buy from if they were the LAST dealers on Earth.

My dealer could have had 5k cash in his pocket if he delivered to me the SplitTail. It’s not for lack of trying either. Now I am not sure if I want one since I won’t be able to see what it's like at DOA.

WHY? BRG even earned a spot in the top 10!

Audioslave-R.I.P.
by JACKHOLE on Thu Feb 15, 2007 10:21 pm
Looks like RATM is closer to being reunited permanently, rather than just the on gig...

Two-time Grammy winner, singer-songwriter and voice of a generation, Chris Cornell, announced today the release date of his 13th career album, "Carry On", in stores May 1 on Suretone/Interscope.

Steered by Grammy Award-winning British super-producer Steve Lillywhite (U2, ROLLING STONES, MORRISSEY, DAVE MATTHEWS BAND), "Carry On" is a mature and content departure from the artist who brought us SOUNDGARDEN, AUDIOSLAVE and TEMPLE OF THE DOG.

Additionally Cornell is permanently departing super-group AUDIOSLAVE stating, "Due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences, I am permanently leaving the band AUDIOSLAVE. I wish the other three members nothing but the best in all of their future endeavors."

The new album's fourteen tracks offer the bluesy and soulful "Safe and Sound", psychedelic "Scar On The Sky", country-flavored "Finally Forever", paeans to persistence in "Disappearing Act" and a slow-grind cover of MICHAEL JACKSON's "Billy Jean" that gives the familiar song a completely new feeling More personal selections include "Ghost", "Arms Around Your Love" and "She'll Never Be Your Man" and alt-rock experimentations "Killing Birds", the anthemic "Silence the Voices"). Fans of SOUNDGARDEN and AUDIOSLAVE will appreciate the harder edge of "No Such Thing" and "Poison Eye" and the redemptive "Your Soul Today".

"Carry On" will also include the Top 10 European smash hit "You Know My Name", the main title song for the current James Bond theatrical release, "Casino Royale", appearing for the first time on a full-length release. Cornell wrote and recorded the track with long-time James Bond composer David Arnold for the film.

With this collection of songs, it is evident that Cornell was inspired by songwriters from Elvis Costello to Tom Waits. Cornell says that his own lyrical approach leans on stream-of-consciousness, "getting out of my own way," to allow themes to naturally arise, whether topical or biographical. "The most exciting thing is to let yourself expose your true, vulnerable feelings, which is what resonates with people most," he explains. As far as his vocal style, he points to such R&B singers as Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin for showing masterfully how emotion can best be conveyed, even in subtle phrasing, also praising Bob Marley's expressive range and Tom Waits' use of his voice as an instrument.

Ranked 12th in MTV's Greatest Voices in Music survey, ahead of such icons as David Bowie, Steven Tyler and Bruce Springsteen, Cornell has been called "the single most dynamic rock and roll force produced by the Grunge Revolution of the early '90s As the frontman for SOUNDGARDEN, he marshaled five studio albums including the groundbreaking "Superunknown", which sold more than three million copies and earned two Grammy Awards. His songwriting continued to develop with the mid-SOUNDGARDEN side-project, critically acclaimed, eponymously-titled release "Temple of the Dog", a collective of PEARL JAM and SOUNDGARDEN members who formed in tribute to late MOTHER LOVE BONE singer Andrew Wood. More recently his tenure as frontman for the rock super-group AUDIOSLAVE, continued his multi-platinum success and produced the hit singles "Like a Stone" and "Cochise" in the millennium.

In addition to his work in the music world, Chris Cornell served as the face of the 2006 John Varvatos ad campaign and became a restaurateur with the opening of Black Calavados (BC) in Paris, where he splits his time

As you guys might recall I was ready to pull the plug on a Jackson kelly but when the guitar arrived at the shop I was appalled in what state it arrived, it simply was unplayable.

Luckily the shop keeper agreed with me and said that he might have a far better deal for me so he gave me a Samick explorer to try out which had a few scuffs in the finish and thus went out for 40% less than the new price. I played it and it sounded really good and it had a neck profile similar to the one of my red Les Paul. Because of the tiny headstock it's not as neck heavy as a real gibson or an epiphone. Needless to say I bought it.

I was expecting it to be made from plywood but it's not, it has a solid alder body with a set in mahogany neck. A really cool guitar for only 120 Euro.

O’Hagan Guitars

Jaws Invades the Upper Mississippi

By Michael Wright

By the shores of Gitche Gumee, Minnehaha gives a little yelp of surprise. There, just behind Mary Tyler Moore, cutting the murky waters of Old Muddy with its triangular fin and tell-tale bubbly wake, she spies a swimming Shark. Has Jaws returned for #4? No, it’s just another O’Hagan guitar, making its way home to the headwaters whence it was spawned.

Even though in a printed interview Sammy Hagar once praised his red O’Hagan Flying V (he’s reputed to still own it), O’Hagan guitars are hardly a household word amongst guitar aficionados. At best, some of you may recall the funky Shark ads that ran in magazines like Guitar Player back around 1981 or so. Now it’s time to tell the tale of another of those Midwestern guitars of the remarkably fertile late 1970s.

Jerry O’Hagan, clarinetist
O’Hagan guitars were the brainchild of Jerry (Jerol) O’Hagan, then of St.Louis Park, MN, a next-door western suburb of Minneapolis. O’Hagan (born 1942), an affable fellow who speaks with that rising Norwegian lilt typical of MIN-ee-SOA-tuh, had studied music in school, specializing in clarinet, saxophone and piano, and around 1970 was making his living playing and teaching music at retail music stores in the Twin Cities area. In around 1971-72 O’Hagan took a job as a rep for the great musical instrument distributor out of Chicago, Targ and Dinner, and later with a local outfit called Meloway.

The guitar boom that had gone into a hiatus in the late-’60s had begun to pick up again at this time (disco was yet to come). In around 1974 or so, O’Hagan became aware of the very high quality Japanese acoustic guitars built by Yamaki, which were imported into Canada by Great West out of Vancouver. O’Hagan was so impressed with the quality of these Yamaki guitars that he looked into the possibility of importing them into the U.S., but found out there was some sort of legal restriction in the way. Still, he thought that selling guitars was a good idea, and decided to go into business for himself.

Grande acoustics
In 1975 O’Hagan set up his own importing company and began marketing Grande brand acoustic guitars from Japan. This lasted for a few years, but by 1978 O’Hagan had begun to realize that the times they were a changin’. As O’Hagan himself puts it, “John Denver was no longer on the charts.” Besides that, believe it or not, the life of an importer/distributor isn’t a road paved with gold, and O’Hagan was tired of always being at the mercy of his supplier, who would always give preference to the orders of the biggest customers with the most dealers.

Ahead of his time...and wrong
This is when O’Hagan’s intuition yielded two major ideas, both of which were about twenty years ahead of their time and proved dead wrong for that point in guitar history. The first idea was that there was no reason a good, affordable guitar couldn’t be produced here in the United States. The second was that the advantages held by the imports would eventually go away. The O’Hagan guitar company was born.

Here comes the Shark
The first O’Hagan guitar to be made was the Shark, a sort of Explorer design which, as O’Hagan points out, is much more comfortable to play than the Gibson when you’re sitting down. It was designed by O’Hagan and debuted in 1979. Like all subsequent O’Hagan guitars, these were essentially handmade instruments made of maple and walnut and featuring neck-through construction, which O’Hagan preferred for its sustain and easy string alignment. Controls usually consisted of two volume and one tone pot. The early Sharks had unbound dot-neck maple fingerboards, usually with a birdseye or other interesting figure. A few of these early Sharks were made of a maple/walnut/ash combination. Shark headstocks were a large, asymmetrical 3-and-3 design which was sort of like if the Flintstones did Gibson. Color choices were either natural or black. The earliest guitars have Jerry’s signature inside the control cavity.

Again, as you look at the shape of the Shark, you should keep in mind that this was the era when hard rock was still king (even though disco and punk/New Wave were busily chipping away at the throne’s foundation) and weird guitar shapes were in vogue. The Shark hit the market at a time when DeEn Zelinsky was selling his exotically-shaped guitars, as were Hamer, Carvin, Gibson, Ibanez, Washburn, D’Agostino and just about everyone else.

Shown here is a 1981 natural Custom. One of the first things you notice about this guitar is that it is very comfortable to play sitting down. This has a pair of DiMarzio pickups, a threeway selector, two volume and one tone control, plus a mini toggle for phase. The volume pots are push-pull and serve as coil taps, so you can get a pretty wide tonal variety out of this guitar.

The line proliferates
A number of more conservative designs followed quickly. Next was the single cutaway Les Paul copy called the NightWatch, followed by a double cutaway Les Paul Junior/Special also called a NightWatch (cf. the Hamer Special), both of which proved very popular. These had asymmetrical headstocks as well, similar to the Shark, but somewhat less exaggerated. These featured two pickups and two volume and one tone control and other appointments like the Shark.

In 1980, O’Hagan introduced the Twenty Two, a maple and walnut V copy, which proved to be his most popular design. All these designs, by the way, came in a bass version as well. Terry Lewis of The Time, the popular Minneapolis band, requested a white Twenty Two bass, which was made. One two-octave NightWatch Double Cutaway Bass was custom made for a fellow in Omaha. The Twenty Two had a rounded point arrowhead headstock, similar to Gibson’s V, with an extra scallop at the nut. Otherwise the electronics were the same as the Shark and Nightwatch guitars.

On the back of the ca. 1980-81 O’Hagan catalog, by the way, is a note written by Richard John Reeck, “Musician; Luthier; Product Director for O’Hagan Guitars,” just so history remembers!

Laservision
In 1981 the O’Hagan line was capped off with the Laser, a somewhat Bizarro-shaped Strat-style guitar. Lasers have a headstock which is kind of a cross between a six-in-line Strat and Jimmy Durante’s nose. They came either with three single coil pickups configured like a Strat or with a single lead humbucker.

According to the 1981 catalog, the following O’Hagans were available: Shark guitar and bass, NightWatch Single Cutaway guitar, NightWatch Double Cutaway guitar and bass, Twenty Two guitar and bass, and the Laser guitar. Left-handed options were available for each.

The Shark Special Bass, by the way, differs slightly from the six-string Shark guitar in that the back bass-side bout horn has been cut off and does not extend out as far.

Regarding the Shark bass design, Jean-Paul Emery of Resound Music in Virginia, MN, recalls a customer ordering a Shark bass. When it arrived, it was the same shape as the guitar, but was way out of balance due to the extended rear bout. It was returned to the factory and came back with the fin cut short. The Shark basses came with the abbreviated fin thereafter.

Basic list prices (without case or options) were: Shark $529, Twenty Two $529, NightWatch Single or Double $479, Shark Bass $539, Twenty Two Bass $539, NightWatch Regular Bass $559, and the NightWatch Special Bass $679. Cases were $120.

Most six-string guitars featured two humbuckers, except for the Laser, with either the humbucker or three single-coils option. The Regular Bass had one pickup. The Special Bass had two pickups.

Pickup evolution
Pickups, by the way, evolved over time. Initially, from 1979-80, O’Hagan used Mighty Mite pickups from L.A., but had lot consistency problems. In around 1981 Jerry switched to DiMarzio pickups, but found he had to dip them in beeswax to eliminate feedback problems. From about 1982-83 O’Hagans came with Schaller pickups, which Jerry felt offered the best consistency, quality and hot output.

A lot of options
O’Hagan offered quite a few options, so you’ll probably encounter many variations. All had brass nuts. You could choose either rosewood or maple fingerboards, both unbound (you might find a couple ebony boards out there). Guitars and basses came with Schaller finetune bridges (earlier O’Hagans had BadAss bridges), but a Kahler vibrato option was also available for guitars. Hardware could be chrome or gold (some brass parts were used, but not for long since they didn’t hold up). Tuners could be either Gotoh or Schaller (a very few were built with Grovers). A fretless option was available for basses.

Natural maple, coffee and black were regular finishes — all 15 to 16 coats of urethane. Red, blue, sunburst, walnutburst, walnut/maple, redburst, silverburst and blueburst were available for additional charges. (A very few guitars were made with birdseye maple tops, but these would be very rare.)

Most models were offered as Standard for the list price, Deluxe (undefined) for $60 extra, Custom with gold or chrome hardware for $90 extra. “Custom” indicates push-pull volume pots to tap the coils (Standards were not tapped).

Finally, there were a number of basses which featured active electronics, with an onboard preamp. Jean-Paul Emery recalls seeing an O’Hagan Strat with a bolt-on neck which was supposed to have been a custom order.

On carving and logos
There seems to be some variation in carving on O’Hagan guitars. Generally these are slab bodies. Some had a bevelled German carve edge around the headstock, others (like these Sharks) had the bevelled German carve edge around the body’s top, others no edge bevel at all.

Also, a word about logos. Some O’Hagans featured a decal “O’Hagan” logo on the headstock, however, there were also glued-on raised “OH” logos, made of a green pearl, and inlaid cloverleaf. These latter logos were made for O’Hagan in Japan. There are some reports of O’Hagans with just the cloverleaf, but Jerry suspects these may just have lost the original O’H.

Since O’Hagan guitars were essentially handmade and many were custom-ordered, you should not be surprised if you find pieces which depart from the standard format.

The Jemar Corporation
As the ’80s got underway O’Hagan began adding people to try to meet the growing demand. At one point he had as many as 1200-1500 backorders. By 1981, O’Hagan employed between seven and nine workers and became the Jemar Corporation (Je=Jerry; Mar=Mary Ann, his wife). He began advertising in Guitar Player.

According to O’Hagan, the influx of new people caused a few quality control glitches while they got up to speed, but by 1983 O’Hagan felt he had a very good product. At least one dealer with whom I spoke was a little less charitable about this period. He had been working in the shop of an O’Hagan dealer in Minnesota during that era, and recalls seeing some pretty inconsistent guitars, including one with a knot — like you see on knotty pine den panelling — that wasn’t even filled in with lacquer. He also recalls far more extensive variations in wiring and controls than the O’Hagan catalog would indicate, although this may simply be a perception due to the simultaneous encounter of a non-tapped Standard, a tapped Custom and one of the active basses. We’ll never know for sure.

Widespread distribution
O’Hagans were distributed through a fairly broad-based network of about 600 dealers, with outlets in and around the upper Midwest as well as in Buffalo, Boston, New Hampshire, Bridgeport (CT), New York City, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Texas and California. To be a dealer you had to order six instruments. O’Hagans were also actively exported, with some going to Canada, England, Scotland, Paris, Switzerland and Sweden.

Changing times
Then in 1983 things began to unravel quickly. The main culprit was the recession of the early ’80s, which by 1983 was in full swing, especially in the upper Midwest. O’Hagan also suspects that one of his reps may have been clustering dealers too close to one another, which sapped enthusiasm. However that may be, back-orders began to be cancelled. Dealers started closing doors, owing O’Hagan frippin LOOT!.

I suspect the change in tastes which occurred at that time also had more than a little to do with the company’s demise (other companies like DeEn were also affected at this time). Strat-mania began. The imports — which O’Hagan was sure would lose their advantage — took over as kings of the guitar hill.

Rumors
There are a number of rumors circulating about the end of O’Hagan, most of which have elements of truth in them, but as usual are mostly wrong. Some typical business problems occurred. Partners had been taken in, and some soured personal relationships followed. However, the end really came when a bank called in its note, which O’Hagan couldn’t pay. The I.R.S. was owed frippin LOOT! and confiscated remaining O’Hagan stock and auctioned them off. Reportedly a Minneapolis music store bought most of them and then liquidated them fairly inexpensively. O’Hagan guitars entered the annals of guitar history.

Relative rarities
During its roughly four years of existence, O’Hagan Guitars produced at most 3000 instruments. Jerry did not have hard figures, but guessed that of these maybe only 200 maple/walnut Twenty Twos were built, maybe only between 100-150 Sharks, and probably only around 100 Lasers. The majority of O’Hagans were the double and single cut NightWatch guitars. About 25 or so of these were made with birdseye maple bodies. Somewhere between 300-400 instruments went overseas. Any O’Hagan you find will be relatively rare.

Dating
In theory, dating O’Hagans should not be difficult because all were supposed to have a stamped coded serial number, although you might encounter slight variations in these code patterns, and the natural Shark pictured here had no serial number at all (pots were coded January ’81). On the back of the headstock on earlier guitars should be stamped just a serial number. (Also recall that the very earliest guitars were also signed inside by O’Hagan.) Later, a “Made in U.S.A./Product of Jemar Corporation” decal joined the serial number. The sequence can be simply deciphered. The basic scheme is year/month/# of guitar that month. Sometimes the number is prefixed by a letter. The letter may or may not have any significance. The NightWatch shown here has a serial number of B 11008 which would translate: Unknown (B)/1981 (1)/probably January, but possibly October (1, or is it 10?)/8th guitar (008). The black Shark pictured has serial number A34006, which translates: April (A)/1983 (3)/April (4)/6th guitar (006). The A prefix in this case is redundant, assuming it stands for the month.

Here are other key features which can help date an O’Hagan. From 1979 to 1980 they had a stamped serial number only (or maybe not). From 1981 to 1983 there was a stamped serial number plus Jemar Corp. decal (or maybe not). From 1979 to 1981 O’Hagans sported Mighty Mite pickups. In 1981 pickups were changed to DiMarzios. From 1982 to 1983 they had Schaller pickups.

Back to the clarinet
Jerry O’Hagan was still active in music at the time this information was collected, although not as a distributor or manufacturer. In addition to working with several business ventures, he was busy running Jerry O’Hagan and His Orchestra, a for-real 16-20 piece Big Band specializing in swing jazz.

Like tracing the life of the legendary Hiawatha, tracking down the mysterious O’Hagan guitar is now the domain of the cultural anthropologist and antiquarian. Namely, guitar collectors. These guitars were well built and represent a very interesting, if brief, chapter in American guitar history, one of the final spasms before the triumph of the imports.

wiring problem...
by l_train on Sat Feb 17, 2007 10:34 pm
i recently bought a proco turbo rat, thing is awsome, spent some time with it at the store, used the same amp i have at home (fender blues junior), and a usa spalted hardtail (i have a pro hardtail), and was impressed with the petal(it was really silent at high gain and at high volumes, and had lots of bite and was really harsh). get it home and plug in my buddies 71 lp custom(just cause it was already out of its case), and all is great. then i grab my ht and notice lots of hum when toggle is up or down, and muting the strings doesnt help, nore does tuching the pickups. i mostly play clean or with only alittle drive from my amp so i never picked up on this...

what do you think is wrong with it? pickups? wiring? will dean cover the repair(no mods, never been droped, never even took of the backplate)?

So, I've been snowed in my house for the past, i dunno, week? I got a couple packs of DR Hi-Voltage .009 guages in yesterday and was pondering what lucky guitar gets new strings...so I picked the saddest looking guitar in my current arsenal and figured it needed a good once over.

Words cannot describe how horrible this guitar looked, tons of dust, rust, and a few unidentifiable chunks of s#%t all over it. I got this guitar from this chick I've been on and off with for the past year, she tells me it was sitting in her basement for the past eternity so I wasn't too suprised. Took the guitar completely apart, cleaned everything thoroughly and suprisingly took off a good bit of the rust that clung to the pickups, trem, etc. Not much a bottle of CLR can't do Laughing

Put it back together, put the new strings on it, tuned it up...tuned it up again...tuned it up AGAIN, plugged it in, picked around...tuned it up AGAIN, turned on the camera and shot a short review.

Thats about it, enough of the backstory, heres the pron...

Kustom amps?

Can anyone tell me how good they sound? I was thinking about getting a Peavey Bandit 112, but I've been trying to find info on a Kustom Quad 65 DFX, too. I found one for $250 online, free shipping, but there aren't any in the local shops for me to try out. How good is the distortion? The main problem with my Crate is that the gain gives of a lot of his if turned up past 4 and it starts getting muddy. I don't want that.

Anyone heard of http://www.ranguitars.com/?

They made a custom ML for Decapitated guitarist Vogg seen here:

The Vader guitarist used one as well:

http://www.musiconphoto.com/UD_110701_1/FOTOS_UD_110701_01/vader_2001_02.htm

(he also had a V made for him: the Invader)

Anyway I filled out a quote form for a Razorback V. I wouldn't mind getting one done sometime in the (very far) future. I do need to think a bit more about specs first though but I just wanted to see how much it would roughly be. I also added a few things (killswitch, different headstock). I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to choosing pickups so I dunno if that configuration is OK:

Dear James,
the Razorback guitar in your specification will cost 1720 euros. (1160 GBP / 2257USD)

Be very careful
by Kragax on Mon Feb 19, 2007 4:10 pm
I know that a lot of us share a love of guns as well as guitars. This last weekend, a man that I have known for thirty years was killed when trying to clear a jam from a pistol he was using. Now this might sound like "just an accident" but this man was an avid hunter and sportsman he seved in the Nam with the 101st airborne was very used to firearms and highly skilled as well. This came as a total shock. But, if it could happen to him, it can happen to anyone of us that enjoy the shooting sports. Please be very diligent when handling any firearm and watch out for those others handling them as well.

Its a hell of a way for a father and decorated war hero to check out, he will be greatly missed. But he would be the first to tell you
be careful.

I picked got ebay item number 260087020592 (paid for it, ships tomorrow)

If it's a true story, it's kind of cool yknow, boogie bodies neck from the 70s.

kind of a franken-strat Cool

any way to confirm the story? if i remove the neck or something?

just got it as a beater-guitar for school, hopefuly i didnt buy a few hundred dollar piece of junk. if it plays nicely, sounds decent through a computer amp, and the neck feels good in my hands, ill be fine.

please, any thoughts or tips of verifying it, let me know.

thanks!

is it okay to play a guitar out of a bass amp? unfortunatly my peavey dosnt work anymore and its the only guitar amp i have. so i was curious to try a bass amp. it worked, but i dont want to do it again if theres any consiquences like it harming any of my gear.

I just bought a really beat up Squire Telecaster for $70, but the thing plays unbelievably well. Anyway, I'm bored, and the paint on this guitar is already @#%$@!!& up, so here's the plan. I'm going to make this my beater, and either leave the paint how it is (Vintage white, at least what's left of it) or paint it a new color and beat the s#%t out of it. Either way, I want to write a short, innocuous phrase on there, Tom Morello style. Any suggestions for what phrase I should put? I already have a recommendation of "Brevity is Wit", but I'm looking for a few options. Thanks.
A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS REGARDING TUBES...
by Killer Wooolf777 on Tue Feb 20, 2007 3:45 pm
I was wondering if you guys recomend either...

A. Cranking the preamp tubes and adjusting the powertubes accordingly?

B. Cranking the powertubes and keeping the preamp set lower? Or...

C. Keeping them about the same.

Also... I think I have a shitty preamp tube in one of my MTS modules. I howls really bad, with my noisegate and even when I kill the volume on my guitar. Do you think a bad tube is my problem???

And last but not least... I'm looking for tube recomendations. What are the best tubes for metal? Blah blah blah... Stuff like that.

Thanks.

Gibson and lawsuits
by flah on Tue Feb 20, 2007 7:01 pm
From what I understand, the decision by the Courts about PRS's singlecut ripping off the Gibson Les Paul was overturned and now PRS can make singlecuts again. I view that as a good thing, but I wonder if Gibson will appeal. And if Gibson succeeds, I wonder if they will go after Dean and Hamer too, or do Dean and Hamer just not impact Gibson's sales the way that PRS does. What do you guys think?

In general, I hate Gibson's business practices but I understand why they do it. Gibson's QC has gotten much better in recent years but I really think they should now focus on what people want vs. trying to sue everyone. But then again, they have a successful guitar company and I don't, so what do I know?

If I had enough $$, I'd send all my @#%$@!!& up guitars to GMW. Pat Lachman To Replace Adam Dutkiewicz On KSE Tour
by JACKHOLE on Tue Feb 20, 2007 10:48 pm
Reliable sources have informed BLABBERMOUTH.NET that former HALFORD/DIESEL MACHINE guitarist and ex-DAMAGEPLAN vocalist Patrick Lachman will fill in for KILLSWITCH ENGAGE guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz on the band's upcoming North American tour with DRAGONFORCE, CHIMAIRA and HE IS LEGEND. Standing in for Dutkiewicz — who is recovering from a serious back injury — on KILLSWITCH's recent European tour was ex-SOILWORK guitarist Peter Wichers.

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE's new album, "As Daylight Dies", has sold 198,000 copies in the United States since its November 21 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The CD is the follow up to 2004's Grammy-nominated album "The End of Heartache", and 2005's gold-selling DVD "(Set This) World Ablaze".

The first annual No Fear Music Tour, featuring headliners KILLSWITCH ENGAGE alongside DRAGONFORCE, CHIMAIRA and HE IS LEGEND, is scheduled to kick off February 21 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Well, i've been in a playing rut for a LONG time now. I listen to everything from Pink Floyd and KISS to HIM and Type O Negative to Pantera and Cattle Decapitation. I always become frustrated with myself when i'm playing. I never can do anything new. It's all just slow and David Gilmour-like (nothing wrong with that, but I want some versatility.)

SOOO, can ya'll suggest any stuff that I can try to learn to do and get me out of my slowhanded playing rut?

I use a mild abrasive to clean the dirt like 0000 steel wool lightly and than follow up with lemon oil. I like the dark look it has afterwards but it does not last long. I'm talking about rosewood and ebony. Are there better more effective longer lasting better looking ways of careing for the fingerboard?

We are Thirteenth Order. We're all 15/16. Our main inlfuences are Metallica, Trivium, Megadeth, Testament, and Dream Theater. I'm the lead guitarist and I would best describe our sound as Traditional Heavy Metal mixed with Late 80's Thrash and a pinch of progressive metal. We got 4 songs recorded (like 13 written) on our myspace and a ton of live videos. Check us out.

our myspace page is WWW.MYSPACE.COM/THIRTEENTHORDER

and if you can't find the link for the videos on the page, they are at - WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/THIRTEENTHORDER

my opinion on the Razorback V after the first weeks
by spacebeer on Fri Feb 23, 2007 8:05 am
OK I have had the Razorback V for a good two weeks now. I am still totally blown away by it. I kinda lost interest in DEAN the last year because of all the Dime hype and the huge price increases on both import and especially high end USA DEANs. I mean I was able to buy a very nice custom shop DEAN Time Capsule for a little over $ 2K not to long ago and that was INCLUDING shipping to Europe!

But Jon at Funky Munky blew out this Razorback V at a very good price (still expensive though!) and I couldn’t resist. I know Dime’s name is on it but the Razorback V for me is the most badass design since the ML. I have never been a floyd lover but I haven’t seen a hardtail Razorback V and I guess it’s cool to have at least one floyded axe in your collection.

Til now almost all my guitars are gathering dust, the Razorback V is just so damn flawless. I love heavy guitars and this just is heavy as fack, it beats my old Les Paul Custom and my other DEAN Time Casules for weight whih is strange because it’s a fairly thin guitar. I love the massive headstock somewhere between the BFH series 1 and the series 2 sizewise. The balance is incredible even with the bigass headstock, but this has always been very good with any USA DEAN. I used to have a Washburn Dime-3 and I owned numerous other high end USA axes like BC Rich, Gibsons and Jacksons but I always found my USA Deans to be way smoother and easier playing.

The tone of the Razorback V is defined and full bodied, even with the floyd which normally tends to be a little tone thief. I won’t lie my Customshop TC ML probably sounds a little thicker, but the RB has this incredible percussive tightness for those big palm muted riffs. Maybe because it was a NAMM axe but the ebony fretboard is a work of art, never seen such a smooth fretboard before, you can almost use it as a mirror. The neck profile took me a while to get used to. It’s a classic DEAN V neck but it’s beefier than what’s on the TC’s. But now it feels awesome, a real shredder.

The upper fret acces is very good which makes it a killer axe for playing leads and the OFR delivers, doesn’t get out of tune at all, well at least not noticeably more than a string through body Time Capsule. It was set up killer too right out of the box, setting up a floyd can be a pain in the ass especially when changing string gauge, but it’s set up with .009’s now which are OK with me. Probably gonna restring it with .010’s if these are worn out. I know a lot of people think these guitars are overpriced and I agree to a certain extent, but they’re definitely worth every penny I paid for it. If you’re contemplating buying one, don’t let the price scare you, they ARE awesome, and that is my Heartfelt opinion.
Rythm Guitarists
by Johnny Wunderboy on Fri Feb 23, 2007 4:54 pm
Hey fellas, I am apologizing beforehand if I sound like a complete pu-ss-y in the following paragraphs... Rolling Eyes

Over the past week, I've been introspecting (on things concerning my guitar playing) and I came up with the conclusion that I am not capable of occupying the role as a lead guitarist IF I were to play in a band.
I thought about giving up guitar entirely, but I didn't want to throw away the past 2 years of playing, practicing and learning, and music is all I've really got. So I decided that I either play bass or focus exclusively on the rythm side of guitar, but I'm not sure if I am skilled enough for playing rythm...

I was wondering about instances in which the rythm guitarist isn't as skilled as his lead counterpart. I thought about Malcolm Young, Izzy Stradlin, Dave Mustaine, James Hetfield among others. Because alot of rythm guitarists concentrate on rythm, it may never be known if they are capable of pulling out a crazy solo or two.
Is it the case that rythm guitarists are regarded as less skilled?

I know the majority of the Dean Forum population consist of insanely talented shredders, but if there are any rythm guitarists out there, sorry if this post offends you in any way.

Dean vs. Gibson comparison
by flah on Fri Feb 23, 2007 7:42 pm
I got my brand new TCZ a few days ago. What an impressive guitar. I found no flaws in this guitar whatsoever. In addition to the guitars in my signature, I've owned lots of other guitars, and never have I been as impressed by build quality as I have with this Dean.

I really wanted to compare this with my '04 Gibson Les Paul Standard, which I feel is a good basis for comparison since they both have three tuner per side tilted headstocks, 24 2/4" scales, 12" fretboard radii, medium frets and mahogany necks and bodies.

Both guitars differ in that:

1) the Dean has an ebony fretboard while the Gibson has rosewood
2) the Dean has uncovered Dimarzios while the Gibson has covered Burstbuckers
3) the Dean is string through body while the Gibson has a stop tailpiece
4) the Gibson has a maple top, I'm not really sure if the Dean does but I doubt it
5) the Dean is thinner than the Gibson

To conduct my test, first I mic'd each guitar acoustically. My results at first were astonishing. Both guitars seemed to sound completely different - the Dean having more bass and high end, whereas the Les Paul was really mid-centric. I thought it was old strings on the Les Paul so I changed em. Same results. Then I realized that the mic placement was different because I'd been holding each guitar differently relative to the mic. Now the mic was a Shure SM-81 small diaphragm condensor, so it really picked up the differences attributed to mic placement, etc. I was able to REALLY bump up the low end on the Les Paul acoustically by moving it towards the 12th fret.

So clearly, the acoustic test wasn't going to work so well.

Next I decided to do a test plugged in. Between my Krank and my Bogner, the Bogner tends to make everything sound similar, so I did the test with the Krank. I used a Sennheiser E609 to mic the cab. I didn't mess with mic placement or anything, just stuck it right up there. I'm sure I could get better tones with better placement, but WTF. First I did the test with the clean channel. Then I did the test with the dirty channel. Tell me if you hear any sort of difference whatsoever:

www.soundclick.com/pineapplehead - go to the 2nd and 3rd clips titled Guitar1 and Guitar2.

Guess which is the Les Paul and which is the Explorer? I can't tell the difference. Not even much of a difference in sustain. I'm sure part of any differences are attributed to the fact that the Dean has the stock strings from the factory whereas the Gibson has a new old set of Ernie Ball 10s.

Oh yeah, check out the track with the pic of my Z. Pardon the sloppy playing - I hadn't played for awhile nor done a setup to the way I like it on the Dean - I was playing it out of the box!

Quality wise, I'd have to give Dean the nod. Gibson makes a damn good guitar. But Deans are perfect.

Now, I think I may be selling my Les Paul and getting a Dean TCV also. Because even if the V DOES sound different, I have the Les Paul sound in my Z.

More gain: overdrive or eq?
by Harry P. Ness on Sun Feb 25, 2007 1:05 am
Ok. I got the Kustom Quad100DFX. I love it. It's a big improvement in quality over the Crate. I like the way the distortion sounds, but I'm not getting good pinch harmonics out of it and need more gain. Should I get an MXR eq pedal (it'll be the six band because I can't afford the ten band right now) or the Zakk Wylde overdrive pedal?

The saga of the Soltero
by Jag Panzer on Sun Feb 25, 2007 3:47 am
I played 'The Trooper' last night at DOA on a Japanese Soltero. It was AMAZING to say the least. It was well balanced, sounded great and played like butter. It clearly exceeded every expectation I had, and this was the import model.

Today I played several U.S. model Solteros. Easily the finest guitar I have ever played. It's like the instrument was made for my hands.

Steve from BRG has graciously offered to allow me to purchase one of the Solteros that was due to him. THANKS STEVE! I'm still amazed that he would do this. Very cool of him.

So I formed an exploratory committee with myself, Harry, Steve and Josh from the custom shop. We looked into which Soltero I should get and what hardware I should get. We looked at the unfinished Solteros and tried some different hardware combinations.

The winner -----

A vintage 2 tone Soltero with all black hardware. I should have it within a few weeks. Pron soon to follow.

I'm VERY pleased with this decision. This will be a dream guitar for me.

THANKS AGAIN STEVE AND DEAN!

Mach 7
by Warlock_340 on Sun Feb 25, 2007 5:54 am
I just wanna know what everyone thinks of the Mach 7. Honestly, IMO the Mach 7 has to be the craziest looking guitar ever. I wouldn't go as far to call it 'ugly,' but it almost reminds me of one of the Alien creatures like in the Alien movies. I think it would look better if that huge limb wasn't so huge and the other bottom limb was a bit bigger, so it looked like a slightly altered ML.

Sound tone clean up ?!?
by kingoflight on Mon Feb 26, 2007 12:15 pm
I am starting to stray from my multi FX its pretty good for different amp tones and the lighter side of guitar but its not cut for turning up to the crunch, when i start adding the list of amp and effects the whole sound gets mixed and is hard to keep what i want.

Anyone know much about PRESONUS EQ3B PARAMETRIC EQ thinking of getting one, will a parametric help to manage my Multi FX sound.

Is the prametric used in conjunction with any other unit to help manage the tone and sound ?

Is it better to start a dasiy chain of guitar effects so i can properly manage each sound in stead of using my multi FX?

Anyone use Behringer guitar pedals they are very cheap on ebay maybe this is a good place to start a chain if they are good quality ?

If i need to start buying stuff to get a better cut sound wheres a good place to start i was thinking that parametric EQ i may be wrong though.

All opinions welcome also if your happy with your set up post it please to give me an idea of what to look out for.

ps sorry about the first post i was rushing!

Floyd Rose on Dean Custom 450
by Dardarian on Mon Feb 26, 2007 3:15 pm
Hello,

I currently have a Dean Custom 450 with a blocked floyd rose (it can still dive but can't be pulled up because of a wooden block). I'm thinking about unblocking it but since it's a licenced floyd I'm not sure if that's really worth it because licenced floyds tend to have crappy tuning stability and such. So I have a couple of questions

1. Does anyone know exactly what type of licenced floyd the Custom 450 has?

2. How well does it stay in tune compared to other floyds?

3. Does anyone have any general tips to keep you floyd rose performing at it's best?

p.s. I hope I made this topic in the right forum Embarassed

Have a look at this guitar. Looks like the Floyd won't be able to go down into the cavity right? I'm looking for a beater to keep at work and take to classes and I can get this for about $100. It's a Yamaha SE603. Whatcha think? I'd only block it anyway, just curious what you Floyd guys think.

At the risk of making tons of folks angry.....

I gotta say this.

The naming scheme on Randall Amps DRIVES ME UP THE FREAKING WALL!!!!!!! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Do they have contests at Randall to see who can come up with the most cryptic name possible??? Introducing our new amp -- The XR300CTG6900T. Don't confuse this with the XR300GTC6900T, it's a totally different amp, much closer to the RG6578CTX model.

I would never buy a Randall just because of thier ridiculous naming schemes. Evil or Very Mad

Just seeing one of the threads makes me want to throw my monitor out the window. I bet David Lynch is a Randall user.

The earliest example of Downtuning in Rock music
by Blazer on Wed Feb 28, 2007 1:28 am
I guess we can credit Reggy Tielman of the Dutch Rock band "The Tielman Brothers" for putting that low growl in Rock music.

Image
The Tielman Brothers. From left to right: Ponthon Tielman (bass), Andy Tielman (Voc. Lead guitar), Reggy Tielman (downtuned rythm guitar) Laurence Tielman (drums)

The Tielman Brothers were one of the loudest rowdiest bands in their day, rivaling many current day metal band with the intensity of their performances. They included tossing the guitars to each other, letting the drummer tap on the guitar strings with his sticks and playing the guitars with their feet. And they did that in 1959!

Reggy Tielman tuned his Les Paul down to a low C to make up for the lack of low end coming from the upright bass. But the result was a very dark and evil growl for which the Tielman brothers were known. Toni Iommy only emerged nearly ten years later.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvC2_nsVJv0

So I guess I'm on the right track here with stating that Reggy Tielman invented downtuning to use in rock music.

Most People I Know Think That I'm Crazy - Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs

Quote:
'Crazy' rocker Billy Thorpe dies
February 28, 2007 07:25am

AUSTRALIAN rock legend Billy Thorpe has died this morning after suffering a major heart attack overnight.

Thorpe, 60, died in the early hours of the morning after he was rushed to Sydney's St Vincent's Public Hospital at 2am (AEDT), a spokesman has said.

"His family were with him when he passed away," the spokesman has said on Channel 9.

Ambulance crews were called to Thorpe's Sydney home shortly after midnight after the star began suffering chest pains.

He was taken to hospital in a serious condition but then went into cardiac arrest and could not be revived.

Thorpe was born in England but migrated with his family to Brisbane in the 1950s.

He moved to Sydney in 1963 and recorded his first song the next year with his band Billy and the Aztecs.

They went on to perform at sell-out venues across Australia and had a string of hits in the 60s and 70s.

Thorpe was best known for the track Most People I Know (Think That I'm Crazy), released in 1972, which reached No.3 on the national charts.

His music career has spanned five decades and he has also written two autobiographies.

Poking fun at the length of his career, Thorpe released a boxed set in the 1990s titled Lock Up Your Mothers.

He was inducted into the Australian Record Industry Association hall of fame in 1991.

Thorpe born with music in his bonesBy Erin McWhirter
February 28, 2007 10:34am

MUSIC was instilled into Australian rock icon William Billy Thorpe as a nappy wearing toddler.

On his website Thorpe, who died of a heart attack at Sydney's St Vincents Hospital early this morning, says while "I took my first breathe on March 29th, 1946 ... life really began for me when I heard Sur la du pont Paris (Under the bridges of Paris) on the radio ... when I was three or four years old."

From that moment the talented musician, born in Manchester, England, was hooked.

"From that moment I couldn't get enough of music ... any music. I loved it and it was in 1956 in a tiny church hall on the fringes of Brisbane, Australia that my own music career got its start," he says on the website.

At age 10, Thorpe played his first gig and within six months was belting out tunes on local television, as well as doing his own gigs.

It was prominent Brisbane variety booking agent Gwen Iliffe who discovered Thorpe as he bellowed out a Hank William's tune behind his parents' local stores on Fegan Drive in Moorooka, Brisbane.

"I was discovered in the classic Hollywood sense while playing guitar and singing in the store room behind one of my parents' shops," he said.

Mrs Iliffe's husband Jim had just begun hosting QTQ Channel 9 Brisbane children's TV show, The Channel Niners, and was holding auditions for a new show.

Thorpe auditioned, was signed and was quickly dubbed "Little Rock Allen - Australia's youngest rock 'n' roller".

Over time Thorpe developed his rock style. In the early years he often dabbled in country music, yodelling Slim Whitman on TV programs and jamming backstage with country music stars Reg Lindsay and Slim Dusty.

In mid 1957 he formed his first band called the Planets, which over the years performed with Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Little Rock Allen.

The Planets also scored a regular Saturday night gig called Birdland with local 4BC DJ Brian Atkinson.

Thorpe was just 12.

"I was never treated like a kid," he said.

"Without realising it they mentored and coached me into being a performer."

Following this Thorpe formed a duo with Australian singer Peter James, which lasted briefly before turning his hand to legendary band the Aztecs at age 16.

Eight months after inception Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs had the number one record in Australia, featuring a cover of Lieber and Stoller's Poison Ivy, and played their first major concert to 60,000 people in Melbourne.

Following national tours and the reshuffling of the Aztecs line-up, Thorpe packed his bags and ventured to the United States in 1977.

By 1979 he released the epic rock song Children Of The Sun.

Early 1983 he undertook one more Australian tour before retiring from the music business in 1984.

Thorpe and his family settled in Los Angeles and returned to Australia in the early 1990s for good.

Back home, Thorpe began touring Australia again and reunited the classic Aztecs line-up from the Sunbury Music Festival.

He continued to record and found a lucrative sideline in advertising composition - including the Friday Night Football television promotion for the Nine Network.

He also authored two autobiographical books - grox and Thugs and Rock'n'Roll, which sold more than 150,000 copies, and Most People I Know (Think That I'm Crazy), released in October 1998 and became the number one selling book in Australia

Australian Legend Billy Thorpe Dead At 60
by Paul Cashmere - February 28 2007

Australia is mourning the death of a true rock and roll legend today. Billy Thorpe has died at age 60 in Sydney of a heart attack.

Thorpie was one of Australia's greatest rock icons. He suffered a major heart attack overnight and was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital at around 2am. He was pronounced dead at around 2.30am.

Billy Thorpe was born in Manchester, England on March 29th, 1946. His parents emigrated to Brisbane, Australia when Billy was a boy.

Although only 60, Thorpie had been a name and a face in Australia for 50 years after first appearing on Brisbane television at the age of 10.

When he was 17, he moved to Sydney and formed the first incarnation of The Aztecs. They became Australia's biggest rock act of the 60s with hits like a cover of 'Poison Ivy', 'Mashed Potato' and a rock version of the Judy Garland 'Wizard of Oz' song 'Over The Rainbow'.

By the mid 60s, Thorpie was fronting his own television show 'It's All Happening'.

Dropping his pop star image, Thorpie reinvented himself with a new hard rock version of The Aztecs and became Australia's loudest band. In 1972, he recorded what is considered today to be one of Australia's greatest ever rock songs 'Most People I Know Think That I'm Crazy'.

In 1979, he reinvented himself again for the American market and scored a Top 20 album with 'Children of the Sun' in the USA. The new Thorpe was a cross between metal and techno.

His next incarnation was with Fleetwood Mac's Mick Fleetwood. The pair teamed for Zoo and released an album of the same name in 1990. It was his last album of new music although Thorpie recently posted at his website that he was working on a new album.

One interesting sideline of Thorpie's career came in 1985 when he formed a partnership with fellow Aztecs member Tony Barber to produce children's toys for the US market. The company produced toys for Disney, Hasboro and Universal.

Billy Thorpe is recognized as one of Australia's greatest guitarist. Australia today will mourn and remember one of the great blokes of rock.

Question About Progress
by 1,000 Watts on Wed Feb 28, 2007 11:25 am
Okay... As I've said before..I am teaching myself how to play guitar..I have been for a little over a year (About a month over)...As of now I can string about 9 chords together, and play one scale (Blues scale).... I was told by several people that learning Chord progressions frist was a good idea, so I did that.

Okay, now that ypu know a little bit about my playing, here's a question: At this point, what is next? Should I add more chords to my "inventory" of chords? Or should I start to look up more TAB's and learn more leads instead of just Rythm (Chord Progressions)???

Thanks.

That's almost for free?! Does anybody know what it is? Might be quite a snag?

Another Dean now in the family!!

I picked up Dean number 5 today Shocked Razorback 2 tone that Ian @ UK Guitars was selling for £450 with a chip out of one of the points, it`s not even that bad!! i bought it as a project guitar that I could refinish but i`m not so sure now, this thing is badass!! I never liked the 2 tone before but now that it`s in my hands it`s growing on me fast!! and this thing plays so well!! whoever set it up has done an awsome job! seriously plays like butter, i`d even go to say it matches my USA`s I`m so shocked Twisted Evil
I picked it up at 1pm didn`t bother to try it out in the shop, got home and just dumped it in my music room and thought i`ll give it a set up later if i get time, so 8pm this evening i figure i`ll go check it out and bam!! perfect out the box!!
No pron you all know what they look like, I`ll post some up if i refinish it though Wink
this is crazy

I'm about to built myself a guitar
by Blazer on Thu Mar 01, 2007 12:48 am
Well then a few months ago I bought a couple of pieces of cedrella from a former luthier who was selling his woods. And having played a couple of his guitars made from Cedrella I have a pretty clear idea on what kind of guitar I want to make from it.

Image
This is a JayDee Custom Iommi SG, the guitar I based my ideas on. I own a Gibson SG so I have the refference material on how to built this. I am planning to make the guitar with a Neck through construction, figuring that it would be an improvement on neck stability. I have two options on how to make this work though

Image
Option one has the neck made of Mahogany with Maple contrast stripes.
Option two has the neck made out of maple with no contrast stripes.

What do you guys think, which one should I go for?

by Adio_stack on Thu Mar 01, 2007 3:10 am
If there was a limited run White razorback with gold pinstripes how many people would be in? So pretty much an import version of Matt heafys (please no Heafy bashing, it's pointless) USA razorback

ok so heres the official thread made in the dealers section http://www.deanguitars.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=478786#478786
