Stupid MotherF**ker nearly cost me my crate.
by R.I.P.Dime..\,,/ on Sun Apr 01, 2007 12:05 pm
Hi all, Ive recently been using a crate valve gt3500 head with cab..
Ive been really impressed with the tone and power of this its real nice..
I also recently needed to purchase a new "stereo" cable to run from the head to the cab as the other guitarist in my band needed one for his Randall. so i strolled in to my local music shop : DigiTal Village in st. marys and asked for some advice, the guy in the shop told me a jack lead would be sufficient, luckily having a slightly better knowledge than the fool behind the counter i knew a jack would just blow the thing. I told him this and so he sent me home with what i believed to be the correct cable to wire up my lovely new crate, unfortunately not. The fool had just sold me a normal mic lead. fortunately knowing this would F*** it with a capital F i got the correct cable off a friend, later when i phoned the bloke to tell him that i nearly blew my amp cos it he dont know what hes on about he still insisted a jack would be sufficent, and refused me a refund on the mic lead he had sold me. It makes me wonder how people like this end up in guitar shops?.

Was i right about the jack lead blowing the crate or have i infact been the toss3er?

thanks..

Class A Tube Amp Decision
by Anonymous on Sun Apr 01, 2007 2:01 pm
Hey guys, and the occasional Chiquita, Wink

I am looking to break out (again) of solid state, and although I am 90% sure of my decision, I just wanted to make a final attempt to try out a few more before I place the order. I play everything from folk/blues to Heavy Metal, I don't down-tune c or anything like that, and I like mids so...

What are you guys using, and if you could add a blurb of what you like about it that would be great...

(AND FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT OWN BOGNER AND/OR ENGLE, ESPECIALLY THE RITCHIE BLACKMORE EDITION I SECRETLY HAVE A BURNING HATRED FOR YOU FED BY A JEALOUS STREAK A MILE WIDE SO YOU GUYS CAN STFU!!!!!!)

lol!!!!! Just kidding, those amps are a-mazing and I would love to hear about 'em... Laughing Laughing Laughing

Also, what are the pros/cons of a stack vs. a combo?

A NOTE ON CUSTOMER SERVICE
by brn14me on Sun Apr 01, 2007 4:27 pm
OK NOW CHECK THIS OUT!! I will name the shop, I will detail everything exactly as I see it. The shop. Music City Florida in Pinellas Park, FL.

Yesterday I purchased a blem 79 ML from Jody and he was exceptional in the shop but that was already mentioned in my thread with guitar pr0n. I got the axe home and and was playing on it for a bit and my B string fell out of the nut. I was messing with it for a bit and for the life of me couldn't get the string to keep its place. I emailed Jody this morning through his website. His shop is only open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday so I was hoping emailing him the issue might give him some notice before I brought it back in on Thursday.

Within a couple hours he emailed me back asking questions about the issue to see exactly what the problem was. I responded and this is the response I just got.

"Mike, do you live or work near the shop? I would be happy to meet you there tomorrow and check out the problem. I don't want you to have to wait until Thursday to be able to play the guitar."

Now THAT'S CUSTOMER SERVICE!! He's not even open but is willing to help me out. I'll keep everyone updated as to how it finishes out but if it's anything like the way it started I'm a very happy customer.
Ok, I know what I want
by Warlock_340 on Sun Apr 01, 2007 5:57 pm
I know what amp to get next. I was at GC Yesterday, my friend was playing a Marshall 2000 half stack which was amazing. So I told myself, "Hey Jake, how about this, get a god damn half stack, or you'll wake up with your genitals inside the combo you will get instead. Do you fvcking got it? Bitch?" Now I figure I MUST have a cab. I found one.

I'll probably replace the screen with some kind of a metal grid like you see on Vox Valvetronix's. Cause I loves grates, but hates screens.
Wanting to swap out my Razorback pickups.....
by dmsdj5 on Sun Apr 01, 2007 11:07 pm
Alright,so I'm ready to put something new in my Razorback.I like the Dime pickup, but it is starting to annoy me a bit because of too much edge and not enough bass. The Seymour Duncan '59 I put in my neck is great, but I want something in between for the bridge pickup.Any recomendations?I've been thinking about either an X2N,a D-Sonic,or possibly EMG's Shocked Twisted Evil I want something with a bit more bass but just as much edge.

I plan on just getting a cheap ESP or something to pimp out and put the seymour's in.Any suggestions for me to try out?

PICTURES FROM LAMB OF GOD,REVIEW,+SOMETHING FOR RANDY
by dmsdj5 on Wed Apr 04, 2007 5:08 am
Today was great.Chris Adler and Mark Morton are two of the coolest dudes I have met in metal music so far.I hung out with Chris most of the day.We went and got burritos and I drove him to his meet and great session at a local drum store.Very cool guy and VERY chill.Mark Morton is a true example of original. He doesn't want or even try to be anything besides what he is comfortable with.No tattoos,no piercings, etc. He is just himself and nothing further.I respect that incredibly. You really have to hang out with him before you know what I mean.

The live show was disapointing. All of the bands are extremely beat and are ready for a break(tough luck Gojira Laughing ).They hardly moved around on stage. They played at least 6 songs off of Sacrament, which is my least favorite album. They played most of their "we'll try something new and slow" and didn't win the crowd over until they played stuff like "As the Palaces Burn".I understood completely why there was limited motion on stage.I'm booking them here in July,so they'll be more aware at that point of what's going on.

On top of it all,MACHINE HEAD DO MISS RANDY "BUCKETASS".They asked me when he would be back at least 10 times but I just had to tell them that I don't know him that well and I don't know how his foot is doing.Their manager believes you will be back for the Heaven and Hell tour,so you may want to call him and tell him what your standing on touring is at this point.Phil wanted me to tell you something Randy...

Anybody own a Mark IV

Anybody own or played a Mark IV and feel like giving a small review?

I have never played one, but one has popped up here in .no and I was considering checking it out - I really like the tones bands like Metallica or LoG have gotten out of them in the studio at least.

Also with all the Roadster talk these days this one has also piqued my interrest.

Toob Amps....
by JammerML on Thu Apr 05, 2007 1:18 pm
I have a question about inexpensive tube amps. I've heard good stuff about Carvins, and Laneys, and I'd like an inexpensive tube amp that still sounded good. There has to be something out there that emulates say a JCM800, or some other good tube amp.

Best small combo practice amp?
by Jag Panzer on Thu Apr 05, 2007 2:54 pm
I need to buy a small combo practice amp. I like what I've read here about the Brian May Vox and the Peavey Royal 8.

What else is there on the market?

I want something small, portable and under $250. I don't need a million bells and whistles, but just a good clean distorted tone. Tubes are nice, but not a must.

Suggestions?

Hardtail question, gurus unite!
by MasterplayerC on Fri Apr 06, 2007 2:37 am
Played a spalted hardtail today @ Manny's music in times square. I've been looking to get a non-floyed guitar with less metal pickups to act as my FBD's lighter brother, so as I was passing Manny's music today I tried one out.

I love how the satin-nickel hardware looks with the exotic tops, though I think I'd rather have redwood, but the overall fit and finish of the guitar was very nice. My one question is this, are all the hardtail necks so fat? The FBD neck is perfect, or maybe I'm just used to it, but the hardtail neck felt almost like my friends EPI LP junior Laughing Any suggestions/recommendations? I really liked the guitar overall, but wish the neck would have been a bit thinner.

Kiss guitarist Mark St. John has died.
by Blazer on Fri Apr 06, 2007 9:01 pm

From Kiss' official website:

Quote:
Sad to report that Mark Norton aka Mark St. John, KISS' lead guitarist on Animalize, passed away this morning of a cerebral hemorrhage. Mark was 51 years old.

KISS remembers Mark for his contributions and sends their condolences and deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Mark replaced KISS guitarist VINNIE VINCENT in 1984, only to shortly thereafter develop Reiters Syndrome, a form or arthritis, which left his hand too swollen at times to play guitar. Mark played on all but one of the tracks of the 1984 Animalize album. On the subsequent tour his condition had deteriorated and was only able to play 1 full and 3 partial shows. BRUCE KULICK was called in as a temporary guitarist to play the remainder of the partial sets as well as the rest of the tour. Mark's condition was not improving and sadly had to soon step down to have Kulick take his place permanently on December 8,1985.

After Kiss Mark St. John formed "White tiger" with which he has had some moderate succes.

So on that great stage in the sky, he joins Eric Carr

Diamond plate V-noob with pron(NDC)
by daVidious on Sat Apr 07, 2007 4:52 am
Noob here. Been lurking for a while, gawkin' at everyone's cool pron, figured maybe I should contribute.

This is an old ESP LTD V200(?) I bought back in the late 90's. Used it, abused it, dropped it a coupla times... eventually decided to tear it apart and rebuild it... several times.

before

Image

Image

after

Image

Image

Cut the diamond plate myself... twice. First one was just WAY off. Too many beers, probably. Second one was close enough to make it work. Lotta filing. LOTTA filing. Still not perfect.

Krylon primer and Krylon Camo Flat Black paint. The new bridge is off center a bit, but I moved the neck a little(bolt on) and it's good to go. Blacked out the hardware. EMGs, TonePros and Sperzels. Used Fender pick guard screws to hold it down.

It plays pretty well. Heavy. I call it the "anchor". You wouldn't think a little aluminum would make such a difference. It'll wear your shoulder out pretty quick.
3rd pickup blasphemy?
by JeffreyRyanSmoots on Sat Apr 07, 2007 5:11 am
Would it be blasphemous to want a single coil pickup as the middle pickup on my Hardtail? Maybe with a 5-way switch, or a rotary switch like on PRS's?

I'm thinking about asking Dean if they can do that for me...

Does anyone string thier guitar like this?

Does anyone string thier guitar like this?

This example if for acoustics, but I know some people string electrics like this.

The logic of stringing like this makes sense, and it would save a lot of time. But why aren't people doing it? What is the downside? Everytime I do a festival gig I always try to notice how all the guitars are strung. I haven't seen any strung like this.

I wasn't sure where I should post this, so forgive me if this isn't the place, I'm a crawler not a regular poster. Do you guys have suggestions just for a little home recordings, by that I mean any type of microphones that would plug straight into my computer without any adapters and what not. Other than just your standard PC mic, one that can take the thunder from a bass amp Twisted Evil

Just in advance, no my amp(AmpegBa115) does not have a direct out, except an XLR but i don't want to use that, unless you guys know of some adapters that would work.

I would deeply appreciate any and all help, thanks very much for your time.

Stone Devil Hill at the Chance, NY : April 7th Show.
by JA Allen on Sun Apr 08, 2007 7:27 am
First off, Stone Devil Hill was the headliner. The support bands were very good, especially a band before them Called Hyngd, very good. Now On with Stone Devill Hill.

For those who might not know, this is the band that Steve (transbluez) is a lead guitarist of. The CD was just released, and info on that is on the forum already. Search and you will find info on it.

I went with my two closest friends, Christian and Dina, and if that wasnt great enough, got to hang with Steve and his incredibly beautiful and sweet wife Karin before the show over pizza at their home. (Mine had "flavor enhancers!") Wink

When they took the stage, out of all my years knowing some of the top guys out in the wild, they are, without a doubt, and in all honesty, even if I didnt know them, would have rated them the tightest, most talented, great song crafted new band among them. It was that good. No BS on my part. If it wasnt, I would have said so. Awesome in all areas, not one weak spot, Im fkn serious. Trust me, go see them yourself, and you will say the same. Ill give you 100 bucks at the show if I am wrong.

Steve and the band, have not only the tightest and powerful drummer and locked bassist for a rhythym section, the guitarists and singer all actually play equal parts in melody and solos, yes, SOLOS! The vocals were that good. The guitar work, all disipline, dont have to comment, not one bad thing to mention. Incredible, and nothing overdone, yeah, rare nowadays. Everything was written and played where it belonged, making it even show more! Faithfull to the CD, but better live. Like the big boys. I was blown away, and very jealose, envious actually. The activity and stage presence were what is usually reserved for Priest, Panzer, Early Van Halen, they did it, no problem. Couldnt help but watch them all, while listening, stuff going on all the time, while the frontman, well, was a frontman, and mastered the ceremony. And the most important, the songs. Crafted with care, everything in place, intricate work, parts, execution, give and take between them, and will grab you, hold you, and you will know the song before the bridge, and be able to go with them. Thats a good fkn band. They are Pro all the way! Not one shoddy second like usually whats out there. Should have not one problem with a signing, as long as they try to get one, at all.

So to Steve, tell the other guys too, stay tight together, this should go all the way, whatever transpires, keep this one together, chemistry galore, I want too see another show, soon!

Unreal. Others, if you have the chance, and if they play by you, this is no amature BS, Pros. So good, youll leave like I did, wondering why my jaw was on the ground.

Stone Devil Hill, saw the show, got a shirt, left rejuvinated and inspired for my own tour starting in May, that the music and genre I love is alive and well, as the packed club to see them at the Chance was screaming for. Had a problem getting my asual JD and coke (the soda!) it was wall to wall people to see them, like the old days. Well, with Stone Devil Hill, the NEW days!

Guitar Action/Tremolo
by Mingeeta on Sun Apr 08, 2007 2:26 pm
Okay, on my ESP I used to have 9 - 42 gauge and tune down to Eb, THIS was perfect. It was so easy to play and the action was set up perfectly and I never had any problems with it.

On my Dean, I noticed that the action was higher and a bit more diffcult to play. I put it in D standard with 10 - 46 and it played exactly the same. (I didn't think that was going to make a difference, I just wanted to play in that tuning) Now, I have it in Db standard and the action is much lower, BUT there is some buzzing on high bends and the tremolo doesn't work as well as I can't bend up much with it because it hits the foam. The action is TOO low now.

I was thinking of adjusting the action myself but is this gonna mess up the whole guitar?

the new Dave Mustaine GHS Progressive strings?

I'm hooked on them now, I used DR MT-10's before and now the Progressives have gotten a hold on me.

the gauges on the progressives are 10-52

everything in my little review will be based on a comparison with the DR MT-10's

the Progressives are on my DBDT and the DR's are on my DFH.

The progressives are bright compared to the DR's, the DR's have been on for about a week.

There's a lot more response with the Progressives also, the DR's seem sort of dead compared to them. The progressives top strings feel great also, they're easy to bend and vibrato (which you all know is important Laughing )

The best thing is that they're not too expensive. Off of musicians Friend they're $4.49 for a pack (I get mine for $3).

Extremely great strings for the price, If you're looking for something new to try, then pick up a pack of these.

Trivium, Gojira and Annihilator show last night
by Alex! on Mon Apr 09, 2007 8:36 am
I woke up this morning sore as %$#@! but it was totally worth it.

Gojira were on for about 20 minutes and imo they had the best sound of the night, you could hear them perfectly. They were without a doubt the heaviest band of the night, I got my ass kicked far more by them than anyone else.

Annihilator didn't have a great sound, since I couldn't hardly hear them, but I managed to catch a couple of Jeff's solo's and he's such a monster player Shocked Jeff did say later there were some equipment problems.

Like em or hate em Trivium rocked. I didn't know many of their Crusade songs, but the Ascendancy ones made the night worth it.
The place went nuts for Pull Harder, Gunshot was awesome and Rain was just brutal. I hate the song Anthem, but I gotta admit live it really kicks ass. Their sound wasn't too bad.

After the show I got to meet the dudes from Annihilator, and I can't stress enough how awesome Jeff is. He's such a nice guy it was unbelievable. He signed my inhaler since he has one too Laughing

I have a pic of my inhaler and me with Jeff, and my friend has some pics of the show so I'll get those up ASAP.

In short the night was awesome. Meeting Jeff and seeing how nice he was just made the night for me.

EMG Users.....Have you done THIS mod yet? RANDY!
by njspeedbeast on Mon Apr 09, 2007 8:50 pm

I love it, been using it for quite awhile now.

It clears up the pickup and gives it some more clarity. The EMG's can withstand up to 27v, but the difference between 18 and 27 is minuscule.
The 1k market
by cerebrix1 on Mon Apr 09, 2007 9:06 pm
A friend of mine and I were having a discussion about the guitar industry and I couldn't help but wonder what a lot of you guys thought about what we were talking about.

Both of us rabid dean fans mind you. I'm concerned, as was he that Dean didn't really have a USA made guitar around 1k. With Japanese guitars coming in a lil above 1k we were both kind of scratching our heads going "whats dean thinking?"

i really want dean to do well. my opinion, is that dean really needs a few products in this market. lets look at what the competition is doing...

with gibson theres numerous usa built guitars you can pick up under a grand. menace, vixen, bfg, standard. sg's and les pauls.

fender has numerous tele's and strats under or around a grand..

rickenbacker has usa built guitars under or around a grand as does jackson, esp, washburn and ibanez.

but not dean? again i with a passion want dean to be the #1 brand in the world i really do believe that dean z designs and helps make the best guitars in the world. but man, we really gotta get a usa in this segment of the market.

Now before anyone says "well its easy to say theres a problem, what do you suppose dean does to fix it?"

my answer? A usa built Evo to compete with the les paul and the washburn idol.

Also bring back the HT pros at a lil more aggressive price point and painted, not finished. that wood look is great for some, but the mass market wants basic colors, white or black.

Thoughts? I'm really curious what you guys think about this one.

"Perhaps the most unique aspect of the Mothers' work is the conceptual continuity of the group's output macrostructure. There is, and always has been, a conscious control of thematic and structural elements flowing through each album, live performance and interview. Do you know about Earth Works? Imagine the decades and the pile of stuff on them subjected to extensive long-range conceptual landscape modification. Houses, Offices. People live there and work there. Imagine that you could be living there and working there and not even know it. Whether you can imagine it or not, that's what the deal is."

CNC vs. handmade
by Jag Panzer on Mon Apr 09, 2007 11:23 pm
This is an interesting post from Ron Thorn (Thorn Guitars).

I am noting this up front -- I took this post from another forum 2 years ago.

----------------------

First off, there is no shop, large or small, that is entirely CNC. It does not exist. I think most individuals would be surprised by what a guitar component looks like when it comes off a CNC. It is no where near complete, there is still plenty of hand sanding, fitting, etc.

Here's a break down of what I do with the CNC and "by hand".

CNC:
Fretboards - you asked "why
they've gone to the CNC and what aspect of things is better". The fretboard is so brutally important that it is ideal for CNC accuracy. I perimeter, slot, radius, and rout for inlays all in one set-up on the CNC. Than insures spot-on fret slot placement (VERY important to the quality of the guitar), consistent radii including compound radiusing, and inlays that are very tight and free of sloppy filler/gaps.
Total time on the CNC: 20 minutes

Necks - Once the blank has been bandsawn ("by hand") to an oversized shape the CNC will machine the neck carve, perimeter the neck and heel, shape the headstock, drill for tuners, rout for truss rod and rout for logo & purfling. This is done through 6 different set-ups.
Total time on the CNC: 1 hour, 45 minutes.

Bodies - The CNC performs all cavity routing (top & back), neck pocket routing, perimeter, top carve, and bridge location holes. On a pivot style trem, such as a PRS trem, the location of those 6 holes must be perfectly inline to prevent binding of the trem during use.
Total time on the CNC for a body with carve top: 3 hours

Inlays - Production inlays, such as my Firesuns and "T" logo, are cut on the CNC for a perfect fit into the routes on the fretboard and headstock. I also "rip" my purfling strips on the CNC too.
Total time for one guitar's worth: 15 minutes

Components - I machine my own 1-pc. brass tremolos, pickup covers and rings, knobs, back plates, truss rod covers, and jack plates.
Total time worth: Approx: 10 hours.
Granted, all of these parts are "custom" for my guitars exclusively. I could purchase all of these parts from guitar supply shops but prefer to make my own.

None of the above times include any programming, set-up or material preparation...all of which are done "by hand".

_____________________

"By hand"
This term, I assume, includes feeding or pushing the component through a power tool such as a planer, jointer, drum sander, bandsaw etc.

Fretboards:
Pre CNC: The wood is bandsawn to an oversize thickness and feed through a drum sander to flatten.

Post CNC - The fretboard needs to:
Have the side dots drilled and glued in.
Inlays and purfling glued in.
Glue the board to the neck blank.
Level and true the board.
Fret and fretdress.
Total time "by hand": 13 hours for the above operations. My fret preparation (cutting to length, nipping the tang, grinding the tang), fret installation and dress is a total of 6 hours alone...no CNC for any of those operations.

Necks:
Pre CNC:
The wood is milled and rough cut to shape, using tracing templates, on a table saw and bandsaw before it gets to the CNC.
Post CNC:
Install the truss rod and filler strip,
blend the neck into the fretboard,
inlay logo and purfling,
final shape the neck carve to spec using rasps, spindle sanders and lots of elbow grease sanding then sanding some more,
gluing the neck into the body.
Total time "by hand": 8-10 hours easily.

Body:
Pre CNC:
Split top, joint edges, bookmatch glue together, sand to thickness.
Mill/sand body to thickness.
Locate and glue top to body spread then sand and drill locating hole for the CNC.
Post CNC:
Inlay purfling.
Drill for controls, side jack, wiring channels.
Radius back edge on router table.
SAND from 150 grit to 320/400
Total time "by hand": 10-15 hours depending on the wood species.

Paint:
Prep, mask off, stain, seal, color, top coat, lots of sanding in between, lots of sanding after, buffing...the list goes on. No CNC for these ops.
Total time "by hand": 28 hours if all goes right the first time...it never does.

Assembly:
Installation of components (tuners, pickups, bridge, etc), wiring, cutting the nut, set up.
Total time "by hand": 6-8 hours

The above is only visually productive acts, not including ordering wood and components, e-mails, shipping, and just plain running the business.

_______

So, if we deduct the custom components and use off the shelf bridges, pickup rings, etc. The average total time is:
CNC: 5 hours, 20 minutes.
"By hand": 69 hours, 30 minutes.

I consider my shop to be fairly state of the art, I have a large HAAS CNC for the woodwork, and 2 smaller CNCs for the pearl inlay work. The only additional automated CNC-type machinery would be a Plek and a robotic buffer. I could see that only reducing the "by hand" total by a couple/few hours at most.

Not mentioned would be a custom one-off inlay that I, or my father, would do "by hand" with a jeweler's saw and a mini router. The time spent on that could be from 45 minutes to 100s of hours depending on the design.

However small in comparison those 5 hours, 20 minutes seem...they are VERY important to the outcome of the guitar. Accuracy and consistancy are unmatched. There are features, such as my double offset purfling, that just can't physically be done by hand. Fretslots accurate to within .0005" of an inch...heck, the wood will expand or contract more than that by the time I turn the lights off in the shop at the end of the day...but it's good to know they are as accurate as can be.
Inlays that are gap free and clean are important to me. I'm not a fan of filler and I don't want that to be a part of my product. Even with hand cut and routed inlays, I feel we are one of the best at making them tight and clean.

Can I build a guitar with out a CNC, sure.
WOULD I now if I didn't have one...I doubt it, because I would always feel the guitar isn't as good as it can be WITH the help of a CNC.
There you have one take on it from a CNC builder.

I REALLY WANT A SOLTERO...
by Killer Wooolf777 on Mon Apr 09, 2007 11:45 pm
I always thought they were slick looking guitars, since they introduced them, but I never thought of them to be my kinda thing. But for some reason today I've been day dreaming of owning one. I think I want to save up the cash to order one.

I want some input from anyone who has one... By looking at them, they look like the nicest guitars ever made. Even that big fat heal looks like it oozes with playability. Give me some input... It's this or my first car... I'm leaning towards the Soltero. Laughing
My rant.
by page on Tue Apr 10, 2007 1:09 am
ok, here is my rant. sorry in advance.

when i search 'dean ml' on e-bay THEY ALL have 'dimebag' randomly incorporated into the ad. OR when I go to a guitar shop and ask if they have any ml's I get "oh, the dimebag guitar!"

Now dont get me wrong dime kicked ass, and i love his music but i dont believe that the dean ML should be synonymous with him. He isnt the only one who plays it, and im tired of the people that sell guitars and dont know the difference between a standard ml and a sig. model. Its like asking for an Gibson SG and getting "oh, the Tony Iommi guitar!".

I call upon all of you, that feel the same way, when in a situation with someone who should know better, to punch the person in the F-ing head. Very Happy

that is all, thank you

Dean Zelinsky's designs
by Jag Panzer on Tue Apr 10, 2007 3:08 pm
We discuss everything about Deans on this forum from pricing, finishes, electronics, etc.

But Dean Z himself rarely credit for his design skills.

I remember when I picked up a Dean for the first time as a kid. I played the Dean and I played a Gibson Flying V that was next to it. I liked the Flying V, but I was blown away by how different the Dean felt. The Dean felt sleek and aggresive.

A few weeks ago I spent all day at my friends store. He has some great high-end Les Pauls and PRS guitars. There was a goldtop there that was incredible. But once again, the design of the Dean just seemed better. The neck, forearm rest and knob placement on my Soltero just seems like a better design.

I got up early this morning and played my Hardtail for 2 hours. The Hardtail is a FANTASTIC guitar. It's a well designed guitar.

So here's a toast to Dean Z and his incredible skills at designing guitars.

Any Lefties?
by Benthic_Pig on Tue Apr 10, 2007 3:45 pm
Hey ya'all.

Just wondered if there are any lefties, and what you guys play.

Ive having a nightmare at the moment trying to get a razorback - ill have to go for a custom -however, ill be able to get something akin to the war camo/rust tribute razorback in terms of specs hopefully - i fancy it in black however, it'd look badass in black with an ebony fretboard.

Anyway, atm im using a custom USA ML (old style i think - bigger headstock?) with dimebucker and i think its a 59 in the neck, with original floyd rose. Have to say, after trying LTD and ESP and various others, i just cant beat how a Dean Plays. Its just so awesome.

Hpefully i can save some money for this razorback however...drooling at the thought. Its a bit of a shame they dont make factory lefty razorbacks however - £599 is more achievable for a student like me than £2500..... :/

Custom Fender Strat Pron "Huge NDC alert"
by '87 sherwood on Tue Apr 10, 2007 10:56 pm
I've had this guitar for about 12 years now and I've done alot of work to it. There are two small toggle switches. The lower one is a Phase inverter on the neck pickup and the higher switch is an on/off/on switch for the bridge pickup. Thats allows my to turn it on and off like Van Halen occasionally does and I can have the neck and bridge on together or have all 3 on.
The bridge pu is a duncan pearly gates and the other's are vintage noiseless. LSR gearless locking tuners and roller nut and string trees. This guitar is very special to me. It has a big connection with my Father. I'd never sell it.
It's kinda diferent so I thought I'd share. thanks

New to the forum! Wanting to get a Dean V...
by Seraphial on Wed Apr 11, 2007 2:47 pm
Hey guys

New to the forum but post regularly on the SD forum. If I'm asking the wrong question please point me in the right direction!

I'm heading over to NY in August for 2 days and am seriously considering picking up a Dean V (or a LP Standard, still in two minds). I'm a little hesitant about the LP becasue in my experience you need to try out a few to really get 'the one'. I'm fairly picky as well so it doesn't help Laughing

Anyways, high end Deans I've heard (but never had the opportunity to try) are more consistent. The one I've found is a new Time Capsule flame top for around $2100. Is that a good price?

My other question is - in order for me to hold it until August, I'll have to put some money down on it. Course, I haven't played so so don't know if its a turkey or not. Obviously $2k not a small amount of change.

Dilemmas... Help a guy out! Question
SWEET!!

Ok so my bro went over to his friends house and he asked me if his friend could borrow my bass witch is a dean. My bro just called and said he was at lunch and he had borrowed my bass because there was another kid going over to friends house and it is evan zelinsky, dean zelinskys son!! so its kinda ironic how hes borrowing my dean bass when it was a complete quincidence that it was dean zelinskys son! im realy psyched right now cuz deans son is borrowing my bass and my bro is hanging out with him right now!

Does dime tune his guitar standard???

How does it sound so pucnchy???
And I just scored this...
by LewnWorx on Wed Apr 11, 2007 6:28 pm

Lemme start by saying I owned one of these already. I had one in my studio up until I closed it in 1988. When I closed it, I sold the thing to a buddy who vowed to never resell it without giving me first dibs on a buy back.

That never happened. As a result, for the last 19 years I've been trying to find another one. I have a saved search on eBay for it, and have just never been able to land one at a price I could rationalize that wasn't in beat to death condition.

Well today, was my lucky day.

For those that don't know, this thing is quite simply the world's BEST sounding flanger/chorus unit. You've heard it on countless records. In my studio we used it on damn near every song we ever cut, and often it was used on several different tracks OF those cuts.

It has the smoothest flange on the planet (great example - Doobie Brothers "Listen to the Music", at one point in the break they flange almost the entire mix and it's killer).

As a chorus it flat out owns.

And so...

I was just thrilled to find on in this condition:

Ladies and Gents -

the infamous MXR Model 126 Blueface flanger/doubler

Image

Image

Image

Image

They just don't come any cleaner than this.

What's really hip about this:

Manual knob: You can park the flange at a given point.

CV in: Insert a 0-5VDC control voltage and manually sweep the flange externally (we used to use a morley volume pedal with a 9V strapped to the input and a trim pot on the output).

CV out: If you are lucky enough to have 2 of these bad boys, you can gang them together by taking the CV out of one into the CV in on the other. You can also take the modulation value out as a 0-5VDC control signal to other devices. We (and lots of studios) abused the piss out of this by feeding the CV out into a A/DA Stereo Tapped Delay and driving either the repeat value or tap location off the modulation of the chorus. Sick, I tell you, just utterly sick.

At any rate, after a 19 year hiatus, I will be ectstatic to have one of these back in my rack. And this one? I'll sell it when I'm dead.
non Dean guitar question
by Mat on Wed Apr 11, 2007 6:49 pm
Ive been gasin for a SG/Viper type guitar since I saw Pep and Kirk kickin ass with em last wednesday. I was wondering if anyone has any expierience with the ESP LTD Viper 400. it seems like a cheaper version but I like it more then the others, are the only differences asthetic? I actually like its plain jane look (I like the brazilia burst version) and I like that it dosent have emgs...
so anyone know anything about these guitars? a reason to avoid them like the plague? I would love to have one as a beater, the kind that you poot cool stickers on without fretting over the finish.

I know this aint the forum for this guitar but I respect everyone here's opinions more then anyones on other guitar forums Ive seen.

much apreciated.

Tunings you use?

Just a fun question, What Tunings do you use most often?

Me: Drop D, C#, B Standard, and sometimes Drop C
A question for everybody.
by page on Wed Apr 11, 2007 10:42 pm
Problem I have bought 3 guitars by the same company (non-dean) one for $500, one for $250, and one for $1,400. over $2,100 all together.

the first two were defective (twisted necks), one was replaced and one was fixed. the replacement was sent with 2 ringing/buzzing strings. I have since spent about 100 dollars trying to have it adjusted to stop the buzzing (no success yet)

and now, the guitar that i paid $1,400 for, and have only owned for six months, is now having electronic problems (sound muffs out)
the amp is not the problem.

All of this has happend in the last three years, and are the only guitars i have purchased from that particular company.

Question if you were in my situation, what would you expect be done? Please consider the money spent, time period, stress and time spent dealing with the company and store.

if you will, give the best advice you can. thanks.

Tuning VS Pickup
by Canadian_F_H on Thu Apr 12, 2007 3:04 am
since its rather apparent that wildly different tunings recquire wildly different approaches when dialing in a good sound...

i know i don't dial in an amp the same for a guitar tuned to B as opposed to one tuned to E.

i was wondering what pick ups y'all thought might work better for much lower tunings. i know pickups go thru alot of tweaking during design and developement, but i imagine most of this is done with guitars tuned to Standard E. therefore perhaps not all of these pickups work as well in B as they due in E, and some perform better then others (or even better at B then they due at E)

so any suggestions or thoughts on the matter?

i ask since i'm considering tuning 1 guitar to B to learn some crowbar, and while i'm sure it'll work fine, if i stick with that tuning for a while, i will probably want to maximize the tone in that range.

Music Competition Time

Yep, that time of year again for me.

For those of you that don't know (or forgot) I go to a yearly Music Competition up in Newton, Mass. I'm heading up there tomorrow. Last year I made out pretty well by placing 1st in two advanced categories.

This past year I've really stepped up my game. This year for categories I'm doing:

Guitar Championship - Playing Bouree by Bach and Cemetery Gates by Pantera

Advanced Rock w/ Tape - Revolution is my name - Pantera

Advanced Metal w/ Tape - Hourglass - Lamb of God

Advanced Duet - my bass player and I are playing Hourglass - lamb of God.

If my aunt brings her laptop then I'll be able to update for you day by day.

Tomorrow is the Guitar championship, then the other categories are on Saturday and Sunday.

I'll know the results of the Championship on Saturday evening.

Everyone should have one of these regardless of what amp you have. Since I got mine I've always left it on but today I turned it off to remind myself of the difference and it was mind blowing. Without it my amp sounded like it was in another room. I forgot how incredible this thing is. I've heard people say the pedal is like taking a wet blanket off your amp and that's a good way to put it, too. It makes my 100w solid state Kustom Quad combo sound like a million bucks. Paying $100 for this thing is a steal for what it does for your amp. I'll never play without it. I'd post clips but I don't have any equipment for that.

The only weird thing is that the manual says to put it last in your line, not in the loop. However, when I do that nothing really happens. Putting in the loop is the only way mine works.

Really, everyone should have one of these. Don't get it confused with a compressor pedal. I honestly have no idea how the Sonic Stomp works, but it's nothing like a compressor pedal. I play with lots of gain and I have to say this is even more crucial to my setup than my eq, noise gate, and overdrive pedal (thought I wouldn't want to play without those, too). This should be in everyone's rig.

Need Some Help To Make A Decision
by Tuckerpig on Fri Apr 13, 2007 3:23 pm
Hey All,

I am currently trying to decide if I should buy another guitar. Well actually I already decided but now I have to make a choice. I am presently looking at a Korean Dean Cadillac, but I have not played one of these before. The serial number puts its manufacture some time last year.

I currently own a USA Dean Hardtail, but I am looking for a guitar that I wouldn't mind getting some dings on it. I don't abuse instruments, but I hate to bring such a beautiful guitar like the hardtail to and from my buddies house for practice. So the question is should I buy a Korean Cadillac or not?

I would like to get responses from present and past owners to tell me about quality and playability of these guitars. I know each guitar is different. The Cadillac I am looking at is a 1980 reproduction with 2 humbuckers. Since I am a present Dean guitar owner I do know about the great customer service of Dean and quality of the American made instruments just not the Korean imports.

Hey thank for any inputs you can give me.

Bedroom Jamming with Head phones. Line 6 maybe?
by '87 sherwood on Fri Apr 13, 2007 6:10 pm
So I find myself in situations where my guitar amp is too loud or I want to hear it loud and can't turn up. I travel alot and need a good quality sound with cabinet emulators or something so I can crank it with a good quality set or Shure head phones or something and not disturb the neighbours.
That said I hate multi-effects pedal's and I played through Guitar rig 2 for the computer and found the tone horrible no matter what I did. Is there anything I can try out that will possibly please me. I play hard rock and metal if that makes any difference. I haven't tried head phone in my Randall yet. I like my 412 cab and I don't think I'll get the same tone with headphone unless I use technology.

Thanks for reading my long winded post.
City dwelling dwarf
by Jag Panzer on Fri Apr 13, 2007 10:24 pm
I picked up a new city dwelling dwarf today (I ordered one). My old one just died.

I got the KORG MA-30. It's got lots of features but $30 sounds way too cheap. I hope it doesn't suck.
Need tube amp advice.
by slaytanic on Fri Apr 13, 2007 11:01 pm
Im think about unloading some gear and going tube. I just cant get the right sound Im looking for with solid state. Im looking for at the smallest a half stack. I havent played through many tube amps, Ive played a Peavy 5150 (was ok, not really heavy enough), Marshall JCM DSL (same thoughts as peavy but liked it a bit more), Mesa Boogie TR (I liked it alot, but wasnt crunchy enough), and the Krankenstien (this one I couldnt turn up real loud, but the tone was there). I would really like to test this one again.
Anyone have any other ideas on high gain tube. Ive thought about the ENGL, but considering it will most likely be my main amp, I want to be able to turn the effects loop off and on at will and by what Kris said, its one of thier flaws.
Any opinions of what is the best sounding tube amp for thrash high gain, but still versitile enough to play mellow stuff. The clean channel has to be buttery too.

patch cables
by scot2272 on Sat Apr 14, 2007 3:13 am
been looking at excel cables, seem to ne very inexpensive alternatives...does anyone have any experience with them...do they break easily or have any other problems

also what about HOSA cables?

edit:
OK I appreciate the input, but i know most of this stuff, i was just looking to see if anyone had experience with excel or hosa patch cables, if the soldering was cheap or easily broken, maybe i should have clarified more. i actually have expirience in sound reproduction vs. guitar amplification, so if anyone has any experience with either of these 2 brands...excel or hosa. please let me know.....BTW thanks for all the willingness to help.

New amp day w/ pron!
by emunder on Sat Apr 14, 2007 4:57 am
Sold my Splawn and bought a 6505 and a Roland JC120 for cleans. Owe a few bucks for the Jazz Chorus so I don't have it yet but here's a pic of the Peavey (not like you haven't seen them before but hey, I'm excited). I've gone through several heads in the past year or so and I have to say that this head is just killer! Spent all night tweaking in different sounds and it covers all different kinds of metal tones with ease. Funny because I looked at a 5150 before I bought all my other heads and didn't buy it. Figures that I would come full circle back to the first thing I looked at. Could have saved myself alot of cash!! Anyway, check it...........

Quick Hardtail question.
by Warlock_340 on Sat Apr 14, 2007 5:22 am
What exactly is the difference between a Hardtail Standard and a Select? It seems to me the only difference is the Select has a Flame Maple top, and thats it. Is there another reason why the Select is $200 more than a Standard?

VHT vs. ENGL
by BLOYD on Sat Apr 14, 2007 3:19 pm
There has been some talk of VHT and Engl here. I haven't played an Engl for myself so I've been wondering about the sound differences between the two. Well, this is a close as I've found so far...a track compare of the VHT CLX and an Engl SE. I liked the CLX better in these clips but I'd really like to hear a side by side of a UL and an Invader 150... Twisted Evil

DFH/CFH how are they holding up?
by jimlp on Mon Apr 16, 2007 1:21 am
I played a DFH at GC the last couple of times I was there and I was impressed at the quality, it felt better than any Gibson V or Explorer they had in the store. At the same price point there are lots of things available, are the people who bought a DFH/CFH import still happy with the purchase considering the cost? Does this guitar have the BL or the Dimebucker in the bridge? What pickup is in the neck? I love the V neck, it reminds me of my TC V and ML I had to sell. Thanks in advance for any replys I may receive. JimC

Someone laid out an offer of a Groove Tubes professional studio tube condensor mic, an alesis tube mic pre amp rackmount, a blue kiwi mic chord, and a pop filter (all mint) for my Lee Jackson m-1000 tube amp head. Its an even trade and I tested the mic and preamp in the studio and it sounded nothing short of amazing. The thing is the Metaltronix is a collectors piece and will go up in value over the years but I dont use it much even though it sounds great. The mic and other stuff will get alot of use but dont have a great resale. What should I do?

Razorback 7-String Questions
by nick_allbutover on Mon Apr 16, 2007 7:38 am
Ok, so I wasn't sure where to add this one into, but here we GENERAL....

So to anyone at DEAN or that may have been at DOA or NAMM, or Sponsored artists on here...

Does the 7 string have the same neck profile as the razorback 6 strings?

Same axe roughly?

same trem, or official floyd for seven? Or cheapo 7?

Basically I am getting a 7 string sometime soon, and so far the schecter hellraiser 7's and especially the Jeff Loomis are kicking ass, but the problem is Toronto is Great and has no DEANS anywhere! I have to order "cool/good" deans and wait months.

I would love to be loyal to dean and play matching 6 and 7 but, is the 7 has good?

The fact that DEAN never really made decent 7's and now is trying kinda scares me.

I am leaning to go with a Loomis sig or a Stephen carpenter LTD sig.

Please help answer questions!

Stone Sour
by vwall guitars on Mon Apr 16, 2007 11:57 pm
So I'm just sitting here in my office today when I get a phone call...
Turns out it was Stone Sours Management..
They were doing a private unplugged show/recording video today for a VIP thing at the Buzz (Clear Channel) And needed a guitar tech.
I got the call and said sure, I am available.
So me and my wife hauled ass across town to get there in time to set up and help out.

Not much to do tech wise. It was more of a stand in for the Record Label and people with the big cash paying for the video that wanted me there.
Never the less, it was an honor to be asked to tech for them.
And its opened up a great opportunity to tech for other major acts when they need it...
The Stone Sour/Slipknot guys were a pretty down to earth bunch of guys. Jim, the lead player has some licks and Corey the singer has some great versatility.
It was a good time.

I never thought I would be teching as much as I have been lately but its fun.
This Friday I will be teching and setting up for my friend Gary Hoey.
All this tech work and the cover band I'm in playing out 2-3 times a week has got me busy!
Plus all the guitar repairs and running Vwall Guitars... But I love it!
That's it, just wanted to share the cool experience I had today!

Effect/Amp Modeling Floor Processors
by Hot Sauce on Tue Apr 17, 2007 4:28 am
Lay it on me. I am one of the lucky individuals chosen to buy into the digital revolution of guitar gear. Therefore, i'm looking to purchase one of them there floor processing units.

BUT!!!

I don't know which ones are best. There is nowhere near me that has any to try out, so i'm screwed in that aspect. So, what's the best? I'm looking for nice sounding effects and pretty good tonal range (or atonal range, for the tube stackers.)

Danny will recommend the GNX3000, I know, but from what i've read on Musicians Friend, those aren't so great. But, I can't trust some of those reviews, so i've come to you all for help.

i dunno if some of you guys are aware of whats been going on with the Copyright Royalty Board and internet radio but they chaged rates on everyone and starting may 15th, it will be more expensive to have a net radio station than an over the air one royalty wise.

if you want more info you can check out www.savenetradio.org

For people in northern Europe.
by Bjoddn on Tue Apr 17, 2007 12:02 pm
If you live in : Germany, France, Sweden, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania... This may interest you.

I have bought a few guitars over the past year or so and have had to have them shipped to me from America, and I have always used the service of ShopUSA, which is a company that specializes in shipping stuff from the US to Iceland, and now to some more countries in Northern Europe.

This company calculates the total cost you will have to pay, takes care of all the paperwork and ships the item to your door.

It adds 2-3% as fees I think, but instead you don't have to think about customs or paperwork.
Also, it ables one to buy stuff from the US that sellers don't want to ship overseas for some reason.

If you are having a problem buying stuff from the US and having it shipped to northern Europe, you may want to check them out at www.shopusa.com

Dean Evo 7 string Review? Thinking about one local used 1?
by nick_allbutover on Tue Apr 17, 2007 7:11 pm
Anyone Own one of these guitars?

Can you review....say versus an epiphone 7 string or Ibanez.

I realize this isn't a high end neck thru LTD or Schecter,b ut how is it?

Would it be insanely hard to mod for a 707 housing?

They want 300 with my setup done on it and a quilt top cherry sunburst finish so it has the ace frehley look to it I like.

I'd love to black it out eventually as well, did dean ever have black seven string evo hardware?

I think is a hilarious contrast, razorback 6 string and switch to a classic rock looking les paul ish 7 string...LOL

But hey it is a dean and I just don't want others owning deans really...LOL...so I g2 snag em up.

For craigslisters around Toronto, the guy no longer has it, he pawned it to long and mcquade bloor st and they want 299 for it with setup and fresh string. I figure that is guitar 250 plus setup and string for 50. Good deal versus buying used off the guy no setup as is.

Anyways, it is on layaway for me and I just want reviews on anyone who has had one.

I may play like one song on seven so i don't need anything crazy here. Just something I can ditch a 707 in, sound and play decent. Evos are usually nice and much better than any epiphone or Gibson to me anyways in feel so.

Ok let the reviews rip boys!

American Chopper - DEAN SIGHTING
by DeanMann on Tue Apr 17, 2007 10:53 pm
Anyone watch this show?

The new intro for the upcomming season was filmed with Joan Jett. This weekend I was watching and they showed the filming which I think they said it would air Thursday. This Thursday, April 19.

In this intro they gave Mikey a guitar to play around with so it would look like he was playing with the band.

IT IS A DEAN! Flying V with an American Flag paint job.

Hope this isn't a dup post. If so, sorry, but it looks like the Dean will be highlited in the intro.

SEE YA!!

Hey all,

I just wanted to drop a note that I am no longer with Dean guitars. I have been playing Deans for years and have had tons of fun with them, however my needs exceeded what they were able to provide me with. Nothing against them at all, but since I am not in a top billing act it was difficult having my needs met because they had bigger artists to satisfy. Leaving was my own decision. I am now with a company that is giving me exactly what I need. With that being said, I am still going to be here in the forum and plan on participating as much as I have in the past. I appreciate all the support I have recieved up to this point and have made some great friends here. But since I am not going anywhere I'm not really saying goodbye.

Pickup
by Caraluzzo on Wed Apr 18, 2007 2:35 am
Im not sure if i should put this in this section or the tech section so i decided id just put it here cause there seams to be more going on in here so i figured id get a quicker answer.

anyways, i have a dimarzio sd in the neck of my DFH and it dosnt look like the pickup rings are lined up with my bottom strings correctly. It still gets a nice tone so im not really complaining, but i was wondering if anyone else has done this and has had noticed this aswell. If i am right and they are not lined up correctly, is there anything i could do to get them lined up. that may be a below 70 IQ type question but i gotta learn one way or another so i figured id ask Rolling Eyes
Mustaine's Endorsement Deal...
by JACKHOLE on Wed Apr 18, 2007 2:42 am
I was browsing through the latest issue of Guitar One and they had an interview with Mustaine where he basically said the only reason that he went to Dean was because they paid him a ridiculous amount of money (the largest Dean has ever paid an endorser). He already had a deal in place with Jackson to re- release all of his designs and take the serial no.'s back to zero.Dean swooped in at the last minute with a truckload of cash.He also said that if he is ever unhappy with Dean that the Jackson deal is still in place and he can return to them.I'm looking for him to bolt from Dean the the minute that the VMNT line doesn't sell as well as Dave hoped. He's an endorsement whore, but at least he has the balls to admit it...
Dean on VH1
by Harry P. Ness on Wed Apr 18, 2007 2:58 pm
I noticed a Dean on VH1 this past weekend. For their "Movies that Rock" titlescreen they show a still of someone playing a Dean. I don't remember what kind, I just remember the headstock. It shows it everytime they come back from commercial. Kinda cool. Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

Btw, anyone see a fairly long Epi commercial last fall? I don't think I've ever seen a guitar commercial before that. It was during a college ball game. I never saw it again. The First Act VW commercials don't really count to me because it was really a car commercial.

Massive X2N and Sonic Stomp Porn!
by Alex! on Wed Apr 18, 2007 7:30 pm
This is long overdue but I got around to finally taking pics of my gear:

Image

The X2N is in a word - awesome. It has at the very LEAST as much gain and output as the Dimebucker if not more, and I've found it's not as harsh to my ears. It seems to be more balanced as far as any eq on it goes.

Image

There is a definate volume drop between this pickup and my stock Dean neck pickup, which isn't too bad since I don't switch pickups, usually staying with the neck for clean/blues and the bridge for rock/metal.

Image

The Dimebucker will probably be going into my Epiphone (sans tone pot of course Wink ) because I didn't mind it too much, but I knew it could be better.

The X2N no doubt has the upper hand on the Dimebucker in just straight out metal. It's not harsh, and to me it sounds very adaptable to my sound (i.e it works well with the eq instead of retaining a set sound no matter what settings).

My ears aren't the most musically developed so I obviously can't be as much help as a lot of people, but on the whole I do prefer it.
Thanks to everyone for the recommendation Wink

Image

The Sonic Stomp is probably going to be quite contraversial as it seems to polarise everyones opinion towards love or hate.

I think it's pretty cool for what it does. At first it was kind of hard to tell but if I turn off the Sonic Stomp my tone really does sound flat, lifeless, even boring.

Now I realise I'm not running a rig worthy of Randy, Kris or Mark here it's just a distortion pedal into an amp, but I swear, it sounds so much better.

When I actually do turn on the Sonic Stomp it seems to bring my tone to life, more volume, more clarity, and a certain indescribable "oomph" is added to my tone. In short it is brilliant.

Now for some messy rig porn Wink

Image

I hope you enjoyed my long ass review, and I hope you guys found it helpful, I heartily recommend these two pieces of gear to anyone looking to improve their tone, even a small bit.

i as well as other have been screwed over by these people

http://www.theguitarboard.com/

if you know of them or were considering buying anything from them DO NOT .

i am personally out 215 $ on a neck . I recived the neck and the work was horrible . uneven frets , sharp frets , bad inlay work with a lot of filler. there was nothing quality about it . I am not the only one who recived products of poor quality either .

so i decide i am going to send the neck back . I send it back insured and with delivery conformation and then recive an e-mail saying i'd have a money order for 215 $ as a refund for the neck . that was march 9th 2007 . it has been over a month with no contact from then . I sent e-mails and made phone calls , but no reply back .

I spoke with another person today who had bought a body and a neck which cost 410 $. He has filed legal action against the company and i intend to do the same. I have all the e-mails , the shipping recipe as well as insurance , and delivery conformation . I paid using a credit card through thier online store so i have record of purchase .

i was nice about the situation but this is too far , i'd simply like my money back.

Guitarhead pickups the review BUY THEM NOW
by colin.p on Thu Apr 19, 2007 1:16 am
Just got them installed at my guitar center. Oh my god these things are more powerful than the emgs. The cleans I would say are very nice I think a seymour duncan 59 has a better tone on clean. Dirty they are really loud but not much buzz, with lots of BOOM. I play mostly rhythm guitar and these work great for that. They look the same as emgs and the tone is a little bit better. They only cost $70 shipped on ebay so it was an impulse buy out of my amp fund that was worth it. Ill post pics soon of them in my guitar.

String Recommendation
by Alex! on Thu Apr 19, 2007 3:40 pm
I recently switched from Ernie Ball Super Slinky's (9-42) to DR Hi Voltage 10-46. I like that the strings are thicker but they don't that great to me.

Can anyone recommend some new strings? I quite liked the Ernie Balls in comparison the the DR's so I might go back to them only 10-46...

Just a little peek at my new guitar. This was given to me from my new endorsement. It was a guitar that the maker just finished for fun last week. My new guitar (which is going to be SICK!) won't be done for 6 weeks and while we were designing it I picked this off the wall and fell in love with it. I was never really a strat guy (my new design isn't a strat style), but this guitar practically plays itself. Pups are Rio Grand. Sorry for the bad photos but my phone doesn't have the best camera. My new design is going to blow you away.

X2N vs L500XL
by slaytanic on Thu Apr 19, 2007 6:52 pm
Ok dont hang me if there is already a thread on this. I searched and came up short.

Basically Im looking for input on which could be the better choice, the L500XL or the X2N. I know they are both high gain pups. The Dimebucker is out of the questions, too much mids and highs for me. THe L500XL seems to have a little more clarity bassed around highs and lows. Now I have never tried a X2N, what are they voiced like in comparison to the other pups mentioned? Im looking for scooped mids like every other metal guitarist, would this pup be worth checking out? I really like the clarity and attack of the BL. Dimebucker is just too much.
Any insight on this is appreciated.
Anyone Own a Dean Zen Acoustic? Review?

I fell in love with this all maple acoustic with asian lettering on thr fret board.

Does anyone own one? Do thay place/sound nice?

Were they worth the original price tag?

Anyone have a used one in Canada?

I am dying to find one in good condition. I liek the v wing acoustic but the Zen was swo much more unique and I thought it looked stunning personally.

Please I want reviews and comments as well as if any Canadian Forum members have a used one they may sell some day!

My entire collection

To try out my new digital cam I decided to take pictures of my entire collection and here are the resulting pictures.

Image
My acoustics:
Upper row from left to right: ancient Ukelele, east european 12 string mandolin (which as it is now is unplayable), eighties "Condor" Ukelele Banjo. Bottom row from left to right: Ibanez Mandolin, Cheap no-name Baritone Ukelele tuned in fifths, mid eighties Aria classical (the guitar which I learned to play on), Eighties Japanese made Martin sigma Dr 18E.

Image
My Project guitars that I have yet to re-assemble or which will never be playable at all.
On top: My early eighties Peavey T15 "Yoko" (Together with "the Veteran" my most cherished guitar), my self built Jazzmaster with strat pickups. Bottom row: The TelePaul (For some reason I could never get this one to feel right.), My first all self designed and pro built guitar "Misty" (see TelePaul, I never got it to feel and sound the way I wanted), my half sized strat, A strat casco somebody gave me a while ago (I haven't found the time to do anything with it yet), a Les Paul Casco (Also from the same guy I got the strat casco from, all maple construction)

Image
My Basses.
From left to right: My sunburst Stagg Fender Jazz bass copy, my fretless "Ricky-rethink" self built bass, my selfbuilt Jan Knooren custom five string and last but not least, my heavy metal bass.

And I've saved the best for last...
Image
My solids.
On top: My 1989 Squier Stratocaster "The Veteran" (When I die, burry this one along with me) and my Peavey Generation "Tele". Bottom row: my heavily modified 1998 Squier Affinity tele "Striper", my self built Tele/SG hybrid "Fido" (Because of a 7UP Fido Dido button on the headstock), My 2005 Gibson SG "Odie" (A Name it got from my band members because a previous guitarist they worked with had a similar SG with an Odie from Garfield sticker.) and finally my modified ESP LTD Viper which is tuned down a full step.

Logbooks into Excel initiative???
by Jag Panzer on Fri Apr 20, 2007 12:42 pm
Is anyone interested in getting the logbooks into Excel?

From Excel they can easily go into a database (I take Excel data into Oracle 10G regularly). Even without a database, having them in Excel would be very cool.

If we have a template Excel spreadsheet and divide the page ranges amoungst those interested, this could go quickly.

I personally would only store the date, dealer, model, serial number and reference back to the scan (section001.jpg). Putting the financial data in doesn't seem cool to me.

Also, obviously if Elliott has a problem with this going into a spreadsheet we can't do it.
LOOKING FOR A DEAN SQUARE JACK PLATE

I'm trying to track down a replacement input jack plate to fit an import 79 Z, either black or chrome. The "Gibson style" plates on the market don't fit. Does anybody have one they could sell, trade, or donate?

It is a square plate, 4 screw holes. It is about 1 9/32 in. (33.5 mm) wide. From center to center the screw holes are about 29/32 in. (23 mm) apart. And of course there is the input jack hole in the middle. I might be slightly off on those measurements, but hopefully that is close enough.

So I went to the shop yesterday and picked up the ENGL Savage 120, after a LONG demo of it.

What an awesome amp. This amp blew away my Bogner Ecstasy in every possible way. The only thing I didn't like about this amp was the lack of low end, but I demo'd the amp with an EQ in the loop and it was HUGE. As good as an Uberschall IMO. So I brought it home and now have my GE-7 in the loop.

Best buy ever for $1000.

Anybody see the OCC Peavey bike?
by scott58 on Fri Apr 20, 2007 6:09 pm
I'm not much of a chopper guy (prefer my more conventional motorcycles), but it was really kinda neat. The amp was built into the oil tank and a speaker was put in the rear fender. had a carry rack for a guitar and you could play it anywhere. Peavey also unvailed an OCC electric guitar. Not sure what the specs on it were, but it didn't look to bad either.

After 8 days with the Micro Cube ----

This is the greatest practice amp ever.

I know, I know -- personal taste, etc.

For me, my guitars and my playing, the Micro Cube sounds AMAZING. My Soltero gets meaty punchy lows from that amp. And the note definition is outstanding.

The little Micro Cube would be a bargain at $100 more.

My white Micro Cube came in the mail yesterday but I haven't taken it out of the box yet. I'm still borrowing my friends.

I've snagged tickets for three Tool shows in my area (Peoria, IL, Chicago, IL, and St. Louis, MO). All three are within a week of each other. Because I'm such a fanboi and I belong to the Tool collective, I was lucky enough to snag presales. I'm pretty excited.

Anyone else going to any of these shows?

Off to the Dallas Guitar Show (Sunday Update)
by LewnWorx on Sat Apr 21, 2007 5:12 pm

For my annual foray..

This year should be cool. I'll probably get my first hands on with Rolands as yet unreleased but preordered VG99. WOOT.

They're gonna have a exhibit of the best of the best of the collectables. Dunno what's in it but stuff like MINT pre 1959 strats are NOT considered rare enough to get in there, so should be interesting. I'll try to snag photos.

But best off...

Center stage 4th row tickets for Eric Johnson. Oh yeah.

I'll post when I get back..

I just got back from visiting the Dean factory> Thanks to Henry for showing me around, it was awesome!! Takes my appriciation to a whole new level!! Lets get started.

Here is Dimebags krank rig from the "night". It was cool and yet very uncomfortable to see.

Here are some very sweet USA's.

Image

Image

Image

This was my favorite, a flat black african mahogany V. WOW!

Image

Jerry Cantrell Soltero. Very nice!!
Image

Explosion V was very hard to photograph as it's a shimmery reflective explosion.

Image

Here are the new limited Rick Emmett V's and a few ML's that just came in and have yet to be painted.

Image

Here are a couple of rusts. It was cool to see the rust razorback's mid way thgough paint and then final. I can't beleive the detail. WOW!

Image

Here is a rust before the clearcoat and final paint. You will also see the Lacuna Coil Art ML for Dime. They are getting more artist ML's in for the final auction. Pretty cool.

Image

This was awesome!! It's the new Glen Drover signature modle prototype. It's a cross between a Vendetta and a 450. I sure hope they put these into production!!

Image

Here is one of the new Mustaine's. They are removing the side bevels from the back due to snagging clothes.

Image

Here are a couple ver sweet USA's that were being finalized.

Image

Image

The new Mike Batio quad in shimmery explosion. Just looking at it hurt my head. How the hell does he do it?

VT Gunman's eBay purchase
by Northwinds on Sun Apr 22, 2007 2:35 am
Found an article on Yahoo news tonight that mentioned that Cho bought some of the clips for his Walther P22 on eBay. They gave slightly wrong info but I was bored and decided to see if I could find the auctions still

Found it... Blazers5505

Here is the tickets he sold for the VT Football game as mentioned in the article

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200058573157

Read the article and you can see the auction he won for the Walther P22 ammo clips

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070422/ap_on_re_us/virginia_tech_shooting;_ylt=Al5gZNUEc8MBFFj_20fb3BBH2ocA

Auction here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150105080082

eBay removed the listing but it still shows in the seller's feedback, that was how I found it

Yeah, this was a result of being bored but it is an example of how criminals or people planning to commit a crime use eBay

The world is better off w/o him

too bad he took 32 innocent people w/ him

Hope I did not offend or upset anyone with this post

It's ALWAYS An Adventure....Evo Pron added.....
by BTMN on Sun Apr 22, 2007 3:07 pm
Well Athena has left the building. The Aqua Blue Luna Athena I recently bought at Jody's Music City had to return there. It wasn't me for several reasons. Nice concept but it didn't add anything I really "needed", I figure it was an impulse buy so BECAUSE Jody is a great guy he let me put it to better use. I traded that and a lil money for a B stock headstock repaired Evo Select in Trans Blue. Some of you might recall that I helped my nephew a get a real nice Trans Blue Dean Exotica a while back and this will go with it real well. I'm gonna give it to him for his high school graduation present next month. Have to snap a few shots of it later today. That was the good part of yesterday's adventures.

Now I have to share the other half of the story. Shocked Evil or Very Mad Confused

I have a fun lil '89 Acura Integra RS. Been a very good ride since '94. As with cars this old , it has it's woes. We went to leave Jody's and there was a small thunk as I pulled forward after backing out of my parking stall and then a lil louder one from the right front. upon investigation I discover a fractured ball joint. Shocked Mad Embarassed Confused Initial tow truck sent by AAA cant/wont tow it cause it is a rollback and he has no wheel dollies. He would rip the wheel off dragging it up the roolback. I can appreciate his apprehension. Twisted Evil So at first I'm told 2 hours for a guy to come with those dollies. Mind you my car is sitting in the middle of Jody's lot. Those who have been there know what a PIA this was being. Shocked Evil or Very Mad Mad Thank goodness Jody is such a good guy. By this time it was 1:30p, an hour and a half after breakdown. Second truck showed at 4:40p. Guess what? Rollback truck. Shocked I ask him if he has wheel dollies cause I dont see them. He says, "Dont need 'em". Shocked He proceeds to put a small jack and a couple blocks of wood, 4x4 and 2x4 , under the tie rod arm and slowly mounts that lil red machine up the roll back. Cool Took a few moments and some freakin' skills but Bud, said that on the tag on his shirt, got 'er done. Twisted Evil Razz Twisted Evil So I await Monday morning's assessment on everything. Looks like tie rods and that ball joint for sure. Probably gonna consider doing the axles and any other front suspension tweaks we need to while we are at it. Confused Sad Crying or Very sad Good buy guitar fund for a while.

Last night just before I was falling asleep I had horrible thoughts of how bad this could have been had it happened at speed. Shocked Shocked Shocked Not a good thing.

Life IS Good!

Sorry if ya'll had to drive around my car yesterday at Music City. Twisted Evil Razz Laughing Cool Very Happy

pickd up a EMG-KFK set yesterday. gonna drop them in the cheap ML and if i dig them as much as i think i will, they are going in the DFH as well.

roommate picked up an ibanez rgt6exfx about2 weeks ago. its an awesome guitar, and if i wasnt so addicted to pointies, i would snag one for myself: neck through, emg 81/85, binding, offset fret dots (i preffer naked fret boards, but the offset is not all that bad looking).

so anyways, i plan on heading into work (day off) and drop these in, but im not sure if the included harness's are 'long' enough, and was hoping one of you emg/ml users could put my fear to rest =)

i plan on doing single volume/tone with the boost switch in the extra hole. what'ch think?

Firewind and Grand Magus last night
by The Metal Fraud on Mon Apr 23, 2007 6:15 pm
Went to Nottingham Rock City to see these two bands last night - greatest gig I've been to in ages!

Grand Magus make me want to rock, but live they are tremendously powerful too - great stuff.

Now Firewind, I don't normally enjoy seeing bands I haven't heard much of, but these fellas completely blew me away. Gus G is a hero, but the whole band were excellent - it's great seeing a band who actually seem to be enjoying themselves (like the reformed Testament).

I recommend going out and seeing this tour of you can, it was a lesson in rocking for me.

Remember when?
by TOO OLD FOR THIS on Mon Apr 23, 2007 7:03 pm
Remember when you used to search for Deans on eBay and sometimes there were NONE?

Remember when eBay first added DEAN to it's list of recognized guitar brands?

Remember the first time you found the DEAN forum? (I do, and there were FOUR MEMBERS!)

Remember when everybody knew everybody here?

Remember when Dean used to chat with us in the TIKI room?

Remember when there WAS NO TIKI ROOM??

Remember El Warpo?

Remember when the Select series was the TOP OF THE LINE??

I do but my favorite memory was when I opened the wedding gift I received from the DOA at my wedding. No gift, big or small, meant more to me.

emg installation
by pUNz on Mon Apr 23, 2007 8:46 pm
few days ago i bought the emg-kfk set (81/85 combo w/20db boost switch). i can joke blamming you guys for the purchase, but thats not true at all. roommate got an ibanez with the 81/85's in it, and i've been playing it more than he has, as well as more than my own guitars. so i had to get some for myself.

tossing them in the MLX, and if i lke that as much as the ibanez, they are going in the DFH as well.

so i roll into work yesterday to install them (GC has awesome set up / workbench desk things with all the tools and sht to use). i ran into a few problems tho:

the 9v clip is to big to pass through the hole between the output jack cavity and the dash pot cavity. gonna have to cut and splice im guessing, unless someone hits me with a better idea.

the length of ground wire to run from the selctor switch to the common ground in the dash pot cavity is about, oh.... a foot to short. simple fix is to purchase some lenght of the right gauge wire, unless again, you can hit me with a better suggestion.

the wireing digrams do not apply to my application (but im a smart guy and have figured it out).

even with the hang ups, it was still fun removing and installing that s#%t myself. and the birght side is, im not done yet, so theres more fun to be had.

/edit: oops, prolly shoulda put this in the tech section....

Dean Icon Pron!!
by satch0922 on Tue Apr 24, 2007 12:27 am
The Icon that I bought off the "bay" arrived today. My camera is on it's last leg so I apologize for the quality.

This guitar plays as good as it looks and it sounds nice. Mahogany body with set neck. Abalone inlays....arch top....coil splitters. You can tell it was aimed at that vintage tone and the addition of coil splitters give a wide range of tones this guitar can handle. I have only played on it for about 30 minutes but I can tell you it is smooth as butter. It is a shame that they discontinued these. I like the body style much better than the hardtail. While its not a PRS....it is a pretty damn good guitar.

Anyhow rather than post the pictures here....follow this link....

TLLL Dallas Guitar Show Pron
by LewnWorx on Tue Apr 24, 2007 2:40 am

As promised...

Image

Here we have the worlds first PRODUCTION electric guitar. By Rickenbacher. All hail the Dieters!

Image

And this thing is the world's first electric guitar period. It was a one off.

Image

Here we have an ultra rare 1951 PROTOTYPE gold top. It didn't go into production until 1952 (that was the year of the one I had.)

Next to that the change out from the trapeze to the stop tailpiece in 1953 (Still no intonation adjust).

The next improvement came in 1956 with the introduction of the TuneOMatic.

The final evolution in 1957 with the change from soapbars to PAF's. 57's are the holy grail of goldtops. Mine (1952) was the least sought after because, well, they sucked. Now this is all relative. If I still had the 52 it would currently be worth between $55-70K. I know, don't remind me. Sigh... Moving on..

Image

This is Clapton's Strat he sold at Crossroads last year that Guitar Center bought.

Image

And SRV's Strat that Guitar Center bought.

Image

And Clapton's ES335 that Guitar Center bought. Oh well, at least it wasn't the Japanese and they're willing to loan them out for stuff like this.

Image

Here's a nifty little explorer with a Moderne style split headstock. And for a cool Million, you too can own one.

Image

This V is actually kind of a cheap klunker. It's only worth $500K.

Image

Would you believe this ugly assed gaudy Gretch White Falcon with ActionFromHell™ is worth $100K? It is.

Image

Now this, I was REALLY interested in. This is a 1926 Martin 00-45 Dreadnaught. As a kid, I had one of these in my house (a 1921) for a month to play. It was the property of a friend of my Dad's who so was cool he would loan me his priceless Martin whenever he went on vacation. He was also heavily involved with the Doctors Without Borders program, and as a result I got this thing to "practice" on for an entire month once. He's the one who taught me that "guitars are meant to be played, not stuck in some glass case so some rich icehole can say 'yup, they don't make em like that any more', when he can't even play it". Sort of like uh.. this one here. $175,000.

Image

Ok, now this right here, is when fixed neck electric guitars STOPPED sucking. Everything before then sucked. This is the world's FIRST Tunamatic. It never even got installed on anything. But, prior to then there was no way to adjust intonation, meaning that all electrics were DOOMED to play out of tune at some location on the fretboard.

Image

Although it's kind of hard to see, this is one of the prototype P80's. It's the backside so we can see the guts.

Image

More ludicrously expensive Gibby stuff.

Top, unplayable, fixed intonation 1955 GT: $500K

Bottom Right 1959 Flametop Standard: $500k. I bought one in 1979 for $1500. Sold it too early for $2500. I know, I utterly suck as a collector. Don't remind me. I will say this, for the "holy grail" the one I had played like crap.

Bottom Left: 1959 Flying V. $650K. Don will take 2.

Image

SRV's Clubbing combo from early in his career. Compared to some of the rest of this stuff, this is a friggin bargain at a paltry $25K

Image

A couple more Double Trouble axes and some odd chambered tele proto thingie.

Image

This one slays me on SO many levels. First off, it's rated at $125K. Well except that PRS still OWNS it. So what, he's valuing his own stuff's collectability?

Ok so it's the first Dragon proto. Who cares? Sure it's nice and all but isn't it just a TAD bit presumptious to assign that kind of value to it when it's never been resold in the first place? I'd sure like to scrape some crap out of my litterbox and put a $125K price tag on it too.

And why do I think this thing is crap? Look at the TAILPIECE! IT's fixed intonation. This was made LONG after the rest of the world had given up on fixed intonation bridges BECAUSE THEY SUCK. Innovator my hiney. Not that I have any opinions on the subject or anything.

To the left is one of Santana's PRS's. Same goofy assed fixed bridge. No wonder Carlos gave it back to him. heh. They also had a late
