KICKASS, haven't really had the chance to play it but I'll take it to band practise this afternoon! I'll try and get some soundclips up coming week.

Sofat it's awesome, less gain than the SE but still plenty and it's tight and non buzzy. Definately less hifi and rawer than the SE though.

Question about the Peavey Valve King
by Trendkiller96 on Sat Sep 01, 2007 9:34 pm
I tried one today and it totally blew me away. I loved it instantly. What I loved almost as much was the PRICE. Why are these things so cheap or all tube amplifiers? Is there a catch I'm missing? The combo I tried, the 100 watt 212, was nothing short of amazing and I'm seriously thinking about getting a half stack of that when I start gigging. Can anyone can give me some feedback?

Oh, and to all the people that I've heard on here who say the Valve King doesn't have enough punch for metal, I honestly couldn't disagree more with you.

Best tubes for Peavey XXX?
by hellboundinFTworthTX on Sun Sep 02, 2007 6:48 pm
Hey guys, I'm going to order new tubes for my XXX 1x12 and I was
wondering if anyone here knows what tubes would sound best?
The GT 6l6's aren't doing it for me anymore and was looking for
any suggestions. I'll probably go with EL34's but was wondering
how much it changes the tone? I'd like it to be a little tighter and
punchier. I think BLOODROOT has some experience with these.
Any ideas??? Very Happy Thanks.

5150 tube recommendations?
by Rampage on Sun Sep 02, 2007 11:29 pm
Well, I think I actually may be going back to a 5150 after my amp switching escapades. I definitely wouldn't minds a Splawn or something else like that, but the 5150 just has some sort of mojo with me.

Oh well, here is my point:

If I do go for the 5150, I am going to do an all out retube on it. I am going for more of that "classic" distortion on the 5150, not searing modern metal. I am thinking about doing the following retube:

V1: Mullard 12AX7 reissue
V2: Electro-Harmonix 12AX7 EH (Maybe a GT ECC83 to clean up the clean tone)
V3: Electro-Harmonix 12AX7 EH
V4: Electro-Harmonix 12AX7 EH
V5: Electro-Harmonix 12AX7 EH

Power tubes: Either SED winged 6L6GCs or Svetlana 6L6GCs.

I was wondering if anyone had some input on this topic.

P.S. I don't like the JJ/Tesla tubes. Had them in my old 5150 and didn't like them at all.

Help with EQ settings for lead guitar.
by RitusG on Mon Sep 03, 2007 12:18 pm
I posted this at harmony central but that place is useless for metal type questions. I'll just cut and paste it here to save some typing.

Hi, I bought a rack effects unit to replace my pedals because of them distorting in the loop. But I've been unable to get the same sound. My pedals sounded so tight and sharp but this T. C. Electronics G-Major sounds so syrupy. Like 80's hair metal or something.

I'm trying to get it to sound similar to maybe say dimebags lead sound, which my pedals did pretty good. I think it comes down to the eq. The Boss eq pedal I had I just punched up a couple of frequencies on the high end and cut most of lows out and it sounded great.

The G-Major has a sweepable 3 band style EQ so I can cut or boost 3 frequencies. You also can adjust the width of the frequencies. I've been through it a dozen times and it just doesn't scream.

Anybody have some suggested settings to for lead guitar that make it cut real good?

Thanks,
Rick
The Dean from hell review
by Goc on Mon Sep 03, 2007 4:48 pm
Like most of you might know i purchased an import DFH a week and a half and i feel obliged to post some kind of review of the guitar or however you want to call it to anyone whom it may concern.

So here we go...

THE NECK - Really good, comfortable and pretty damn fast. U get used to it very quickly and it's a pleasure to play. All the stuff you read about V neck is totally true. A huge plus on this side.

THE FRETBOARD - Same as the neck, fast and comfortable. it's totally flat which i absolutely love but the binding is a huge minus in my book. I don't really see the purpose of it except making the fretboard narrower which bothers me coz i'm used to strong vibrato and the E strings slip away from the fretboard very easy that way.

THE PICKUPS - absolutely great. Bill Lawrence destroys with great bottom end and cutting highs. Enough mids and PLENTY sustain in there too. The neck pickup is really great too for a stock pickup, i only have good words for it. Beware though, this part is more subjective than the others coz it concerns tone. This guitar is best for hard rock/heavy metal. All other players probably wouldn't be thrilled about the pickups at all.

THE BODY - Extremely comfortable body shape, can easily be played sitting down or standing up. The fretboard is pretty accessible, the balance is great and the whole guitar isn't too heavy at all.

FLOYD ROSE - This is the only piece of the guitar that i absolutely hate and despise and now i'll explain why.
The guitar cannot stay in tune. Plain and simple. Now, before some of you start bashing me about how i don't know to set up the floyd I gotta warn you that in this week and a half, MANY people, including some respectable (and very experienced) forum members have tried to help me solve the problem, but couldn't. I've ended putting all 5 springs in the back, and using 10-52 strings which made things a bit better, but the guitar STILL doesn't stay in tune. I'm tuned to D standard which isn't anything extraordinary and yes i have set up the octaves/intonation and made sure the floyd is leveled with the body. Now i'm waiting for my tremol-no to arrive and if that doesn't help, i may have a huge problem.

I tried to be as objective as i could writing this, despite all the frustration this tuning issue has caused me which only became bigger due to the fact that the guitar itself is really great. I just gotta mention that this is the only DFH i've ever played so i cannot compare it with others to see if the guitar is simply flawed or not. I hope it will be helpful to anyone out there.

P.S. A big thanks to all of the members who took their time to help me out (you know who you are)!

DB-01 vs DB-02, plus Rotatary Effects questions.
by Bullet on Tue Sep 04, 2007 2:30 am
I'm looking to get a new wah pedal since my Crybaby crapped out it was like 12 years old when I got it a year ago. So I was looking at the two Dimebag wahs, and the Wylde Wah. What is the main differences, between the two Dimebag wahs, other than the price tag, and the eq controls? Is there any difference between the two sounds of the wah?

Also I visited my Great Uncle yesterday, and he let me play his '74 Les Paul, through his Leslie Rotatory speaker. Is there any pedal that will emulate the sound of it, seeing as I don't have the cash to spend on the actual one due to school. Preferably something with, a expression pedal for speed control?

by minimimaniac on Tue Sep 04, 2007 5:43 pm
...and it felt just great, super smooth and so nice to the touch. Hit it with 400 grit sand paper and it rocked. Then I finished it with Tung oil. I diluted it 1:1 with white spirit and applied it with a clean rag. After three days drying time the neck felt sticky and there were some scuff marks appearing on the neck. This was only after the first application of the Oil. Will the neck be smooth after a few more coats? Should I coat it with pure Tung oil? Do I sand it all down again and leave it bare?

All your input is really really appreciated, thanks guys.

So, dug out some stuff today and did a little four minute improv. over set chord pattern in a rock/metal balad style.

Excuse some of the wanky cack improv. that's in there, was very much a rough cut and all really off the top of my head (bar the lick at the start of the choruses that repeats itself - you'll know when you listen).

This is with my import Razorback - the verse type lead sections are with the SD '59, and the chorus style lead stuff is with the Dimebucker. Running through the Microcube on the r-fier setting, gain at full, tone at about 3 or 4 o'clock.

So, check it out! Give me some feedback. Maybe hit up some scales/modes/patterns I could learn that could help expand the improv. a little?

So I go to call Dana yesterday, and somebody answers the phone but it's not Dana or Michelle. Same phone number I've had forever, but this woman tells me it's a new number and they've had it for 2 months.

Which means..

Dana changed phone numbers or something.

Does anybody have a current phone, email or even snailmail address?

I know several folks here bought and sold guitars with him, so maybe you still have his snail address written down.

Best trem you ever divebombed and sqealed with?
by Hot Sauce on Wed Sep 05, 2007 3:39 am
So I was at Pro Concert Music in Tupelo, MS the other day and saw an Ibanez S Series on the wall, this one right here, to be exact:

Image

These things are LIGHT. The body is about 1 1/2 inches at it's thickest. Amazing guitar...blew me away...

But what really blew me away was the Zero Point trem it had. I sat there and completely wailed on the thing for about ten minutes. I really wanted to do the "harmonic and quickly pick up the guitar by the trem arm and make it squeal" maneuver Herman Li style, but decided that the people in the store would probably become pretty unhappy with me pretty quickly.

It was so incredibly flexible and it wouldn't go out of tune for anything. It was better than any Floyd i've ever played with, to be honest. If you ever see this guitar, try it out. I'm buying it. Cool

if you could wish one PRODUCTION guitar be made lefty, what would it be, and why?

i choose the silverburst 79 ML (or MLF if there is such a thing with that finish) because A) the finish is the best B)they're great bang for the buck guitar C) that particular finish is in no way (as far as i know) associated with the late, great Darrell Abbott.

Dime Shadow Review
by deathgrind on Thu Sep 06, 2007 1:09 am
Our guitar center finally got the dime shadow in so I had to play it of course. This particular guitar was friggin heavy! Must have weighed a good 10 pounds or so. Def a well built axe. The neck is the same profile as the Dime-o_flame but for some reason it plays alot faster and much more smoothly than the flame. The Dean blade pickup is def on par with the Bill Lawrence pickups. It has nice bite to it and a great growl. The finish on this one was flawless. This guitar is def worth the 599. Honestly no complaints about the guitar whatsoever. The set up was great too.

by Dean_Lefty14 on Thu Sep 06, 2007 4:00 pm
Ok yall, i think its about time us leftys get a limited run, i know what guitar i have been dreaming about for a long time lol, but i dont know what the credentials are for a limited run, but these are the GENERAL specs i would personaly like

Lefty ML body
Anything BUT bolt-on, i HATE bolt-on
Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro II in the Neck
Seymour Duncan JB in the Bridge
(im open to fixed or Floyd)
Either Black or Gold hardware
Grover Tuners
C or V neck
and for the paintjob... i personaly think a Zakk Wylde p.j. would be KILLER after i saw those 3d drawings, but im totaly open to any other paintjobs

Everything else im not sure, we can discuss...

What do you think?

Comparison Review
by emunder on Thu Sep 06, 2007 6:34 pm
Played a Comparison today at GC. Figured I'd post a review in case anybody was looking at one of these and couldn't find one to play. It was a used Applehorn Mattias Eklundh signature model. First thing I noticed when I walked up to it was they were asking way too much for it. They wanted $1,899 and the guitar was at least a couple of years old and had some rust on the Floyd parts and alot of buckle rash on the back of the guitar. They don't go for much more than that new so there's no way I'd pay that much for this one. Maybe they were holding out on the rarity of the guitar because you don't see them very often here in the states.

Specs were as follows:

Body: Mahagony
Neck: Maple, bolt-on
Fretboard: Rosewood w/ binding
Scale: 24.75"
Frets: 27!
Bridge: Schaller Floyd Rose
Pickups: Single & Hum Comparison

Plugged into a 2X12 Line 6 Spider III because they are real easy to get decent sounds out of fast. This is obviously built to be a shredder type guitar like the Ibanez RG's or the Jackson Soloist. Action was very low but surprisingly it did have some fret buzz. Nothing major but not really what I expected from a guitar in this price range but maybe it was just a setup issue. The neck was pretty thin like a Jackson but to me it felt tacky and slow. I also noticed alot of drag on the fretboard when shifting from position to position. Pickups were Comparisons and the bridge pickup was pretty hot. It kinda reminded me of a hotter JB. Pinch harmonics and harmonics in general were effortless with great sustain. Switching from the bridge pickup to the neck pickup was performed by pulling or pushing on the volume knob as there was no toggle switch. Fit and finish seemed normal for a guitar in this price range so nothing to really report there. The Mahagony body had that open grain look to it with a matte charcoal black finish and the indented applehorn around the pickup area. It really made the guitar look pretty plain to me. Again, if I was going to drop 2 grand on a guitar I would expect it to have a real nice finish. Maybe a trans finish with a flame maple top or whatever. To me this guitar was pretty overpriced for what your getting and I wouldn't pay more than $1,200 for something like this brand new. The USA Jacksons & upper end ESP's are way nicer for the same or less money. If your thinking about blindly ordering one of these I would definately try to find one to play first. Here's a pic of the model I played......

question for usa buyers
by rottingcorpse on Thu Sep 06, 2007 9:33 pm
if you were spending 2500-3500 or more for a usa, would you be willing to cough up an extra 300 for a flight case upgrade if it was offered by the factory? especially if it was for a razorback? i know flight cases are cumbersome, but the extra protection is worth it after spending so much money. this is just an opinion poll.
Note to Dean Guitars

PUT OFRs & NAME BRAND PUPS IN BOTH POSITIONS IN ALL YOUR IMPORTS $800+!!! ALSO, MAKE YOUR V NECK AVAILABLE IN THIS PRICE RANGE!!!

I want to buy more Deans, but when companies like Schecter and BC Rich are offering these features (minus the v neck... I think) on guitars in that price range, it's hard to keep my eyes from wandering.

Thanks!

Heaven & Hell show last night & Alice Cooper stole t
by Northwinds on Sat Sep 08, 2007 10:30 am
Caught the show last night at Mohegan Sun in CT. We had comp tickets and the seats were awesome, we were just left of the stage a few rows up from the floor

Queensryche was the opening act and I was not really impressed sadly to say... Their 1st album (which is really an ep) was what made me like them originally. However, they played none of the old Ryche stuff and the twin guitar players for a very few moments were cool but for the most part, only left me wishing they would just get off the stage for Alice

Alice Cooper was the middle act and he stole the show. I could not believe that after all these years and at his age that he could pull it off. He had the crowd going wild and there was no one sitting down anywhere. The onstage antics only added to the fun right from when the lights went down. A huge tapestry was backlit and you could see a shadow of a tuxedo dressed figure swinging a cane around and then another figure came is and ran a sword through the first figure. The tapestry dropped and the "killed" figure was laying on top of the drum platform and Alice preceeded to put on a show that amazed as much as it mezmerized. He played all his best stuff and just before the encore, he was hanged on the gallows by the mother of the dead baby he drove a stake through while singing Dead Babies. He finished with Elected while waving an American flag around. Just too much show and not enough words to convey just how good a time it was. If you get the chance, Cooper is worth many times the price of admission alone. In fact, you could leave after his set and not even regret missing H&H

BTW, his two young guitarists smoked. One was playing a deep tobacco burst Les Paul and also used a light yellow custom SG and a stunning white Firebird w/ bloodstains all over it

The other guitarist played a natural Gibson Explorer for most of the set but pulled out an Ibanez Iceman for a song or two including the duel guitar solo. For Elected, he played an AWESOME looking Stars & Stripes Les Paul

Needless to say, the crowd was screaming Alice Cooper for President Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Both guys were very good, the first guitar player reminded me of Slash in style but better technique

Heaven & Hell was the headline act. Dio's voice was great as always but he still is a cocky dwarf prick Laughing and a few of his comments sort of turned me off. He still looks like an emaciated skeleton w/ a receding hairline but his voice is still classic

Iommi rules, dressed in a black suit and sporting an old SG and a gorgeous white one. He looked very comfortable and professional on stage but still typically mellow and it was fun to watch him. Geezer Butler was amazing as always on bass but I though Vinnie Appice could have done a better solo on the skins. The stage set was pretty cool but they only played like 7 songs and did not come out for an encore. I think this was Dio's doing because there was very little chanting by the crowd to get them to come back out

I think it was a mistake for them to have Alice Cooper as part of the bill because that was a tough act to follow and they never came close Rolling Eyes
NDC... A quick song by our group...
by Trashed on Sat Sep 08, 2007 12:35 pm
Ok, so the background for this song is that we had only a day to write, arrange and mix the song for a underground mix tape or something like that... We recorded the instruments live at the same time in our small practice place, so there no doubling on the guitars or anything... the final take that we settled on was take # 4 of the 4 takes we did Razz .
I put NDC on the topic cause i played this with my Washburn 333 slime with a dimebucker installed through my randall rh 100 head for the dirty sounds and the cleans are through my orange tiny terror...
This isn't our "real" bands work cause our bass player was sick the day so our singer actually plays bass on this song...
The vocals were recorded last after we roughly mixed the instruments... the rough mix of the instruments ended up being the final mix for the...
The whole idea and execution was done in just under 12 hours by the three of us...
We consumed three pizzas, one half liter of whiskey, aproximately 48 beers & two cans of yoghurt in making this... so please enjoy and comment all you want... you'll find the song through this link...Press Kuuntele to stream or download to download Very Happy

P.S. we had a blast making this song and its really kind of a joke, but i'm still kind of proud of it (though we never remembered to send it to the mix tape guys)... so once again enjoy...
If you've got any question I'll try to answer to the best of my memory...
Internet concepts & what to expect online
by Metal_et_al on Sat Sep 08, 2007 3:47 pm
Ok folks, just to give some perspective:

1. If you post anything, anything at all on the internet, be it a statement, a photo, whatever, you by default accept the fact that people emboldened by anonymity will lash out at you and in general be hostile for no reason. Or maybe they will have a reason. Either way, by posting, know that you are opening yourself to the irrationality and defective personalities of millions of online users.

Bottom line: If you can't accept a$$hole comments from internet a$$holes, don't post.

2. If you host a forum, you must know that forums are like bright lights to the little internet a$$hole moths. They cannot resist fluttering about and dropping their wee internet a$$hole moth crap all over everything. If you cannot except this you need to either close the forum or have an active, organized, and fair moderation staff.

3. If you you visit a forum, know this: someone else is paying for that forum. You are a guest in their house. If you act like an a$$hole, expect that you will be ejected.

4. Guilty by rumor or association is bvllshit. Period. If you don't have an email or post from a person in question, you don't have anything. Of course, this is the internet, and rumor will always pown the truth.

On to specifics.

Shutting this forum down would be, in a word, stupid. I'll only give one of many reasons: guitar sales, i.e., limited runs, "hey dealer, PM me a price on..."

In regards to the specific case of R.D. Seriously? I see Randy as one of the main ambassadors of good will for Dean guitars. How many guitar purchases has he influenced for Dean? He is an incredibly positive force on this forum and for Dean Guitars. I really hope that his deal is kept active and that I can shake his hand at DOA 08 and say "Thanks, brother".

The general rule if you have an issue with a guitar that you have purchased (whether it is Dean or not):

1. Take it to the dealer you bought it from

2. If that fails to get you a resolution, contact the manufacturer.

Where #2 is concerned, I don't know how far it will get you at other companies, but I have witnessed first-hand the excellent customer service Dean Guitars provides.

In regards to slagging other forum members, dealers, etc...one word people: respect.

If you don't give it, don't expect it.

Criticize, but if you can't do it in a respectful, constructive way, keep it to yourself. Would you say in person what you type on the internet?

Life IS Good! Cool
Think'n of getting a Tube Amp
by PsychoholicSlag on Sun Sep 09, 2007 6:03 am
This should be fun. Laughing

So .... I'm finally goin back to tubes. The Randall's nice but ..... eh.

I've narrowed it to 3, Mesa, Rev1, 6505. I know there are many threads like this but there is a reason.

6505 - I love Machine Head's sound and every other band I heard with this amp I liked also.

Krank - ......Laughing I know alot of you hate this amp, but ...... I have a reeealllly sweat deal on basicly a brand new one, for $500 - $600 range ( I love gear whores Laughing ). If I changed the tubes for better ones and set it up the way I want will it wake it up?

Mesa - I've heard nothing but great things about them and I love them when I get the chance to play one but I usually see them at $1000 and up.

...... I'm try'n to keep the cost down because I still need to pay for the Cadzilla, I have I good built cab that I wanna put V30's in it and I'd like to have at least some beer money left. I work at a pizza joint at the moment. I don't make shit! Laughing Laughing .

I'll probably be useing my rack setup with this amp, EQ -> BBE -> Hush. Easy and it gets the job done. Every amp I've try'd and bought it really breath's fire into it. I really love the BBE and my blue MXR - 6 band is perfect. Once I had a 32 band. Shocked Rolling Eyes . That thing had nice features but it took 2 months just to dial in something Laughing .

So whacha think ....... IMO the Krank is a crazy not to pass deal, the Peavey is tried and true workhorse, or wait a while for the Mesa.

Oh, I didn't put ENGL 1. Cause of the price ( I understand ...... it IS awesome but ....... damn .....) and 2. I love my EMG's, they are a part of my sound and if I can recall I thought Mark said it doesn't respond that well with active pickups, It's better with passives.

I know this is real late, but I finally picked up a copy and gave it a good listen. After listening to it like 5 times I really like it alot. I didn't like them so much when they were the kinda screamo band but the direction they brought their music in is really good, I dont understand why people call them fake metal but hey to each their own i'd give this album a 9/10 for sure, best album ive heard in a while. Whats everyones opinion?
Luna Parlor - NDC (technically) - Lots of pics
by Coyote on Sun Sep 09, 2007 5:42 pm
So, it's a Luna, which is a sister company to Dean, so is it Dean content? lol

I saw some questions posted about this guitar, Steve from Blue Rock Guitars posted some pics, and I immediately started salivating. I was a little weary of buying a guitar that I've never played before, but I heard such good things about it and Steve was such a great guy, answered all my questions, told me everything I needed to know, and it was such a great deal that I just couldn't pass it up.

Image

This guitar is a little small. But do not let that fool you. It has a big sound and plays like a dream for such a little guitar. Definately a great guitar for traveling and small places like a cafe, book store, your living room... Great, great instrument and I'm lovin' it. One of the first things I do when I get up is pick up this guitar.

Image

Image

Now here's some pics of me goofin' off so that you have a better idea of the size of the guitar.

Image

Now, not only does this guitar sound great unplugged, but I plugged into my V-Amp, messed with the EQ some, and got it sounding perfect. I've never enjoyed an acoustic guitar this much. If you guys ever get a chance to pick one up, I suggest you do so. And if you ever get a chance to do business with Blue Rock Guitars, I also suggest that you do so. Steve was extremely helpful and an all around great guy.

Amp poll
by '87 sherwood on Sun Sep 09, 2007 6:55 pm
This has probably been discussed before but I can't seem to find a controlled environment to try to try these amps out. It's either they are across town and I gets tones confused by the time I'm there or the stores are so packed that I can't get a reasonable comparison.

I play alot of classic rock and metal but I also play new music like Default for example. I'm looking for a quiet amp that can do it all. The amp has to be high gain as well.

I'm leaning towards the JSX Personally.

Thoughts on a higher quality guitar.
by \.../_METAL_\.../ on Sun Sep 09, 2007 10:29 pm
I'm thinking about getting a higher quality guitar and I've narrowed it down to a few. The thing is I want a Kahler and almost none of them come with one. The guitars are the Bernie Rico Hellicon Deluxe, Moser Starblazer (string through version so I could convert it without having a huge hole from the floyded version.) An ESP SV, or a USA Jackson Kelly. I've heard the quality of Moser's stuff is pretty good, but I can't get them to email me back about when the starblazer will be out. I got an email back from DCGL about the Hellicon, but they made it sound like each one is custom and I don't have that much money. The SV and the Kelly would both be floyded and I don't know what their quality would be like. Any help would be appreciated.

So, I've recently been itchin' for a 255. I really want one. My first plan was to get a '79 with the job I have now, then get a 255 down the line. But, I've recently decided to just go for the throat and get the 255. Then I realized, the reason I wanted one right away was cause my friend was getting a lot of Deans.

But just recently I thought about a nice TCV. I mean, the quality is better, I don't care for a Floyd Rose, and it's USA made. I've also been considering some other Vs.

so, I have a few questions...

1. What did you vote for?

2. How much would a decent TCV cost with a V neck?

3. Are they even available with V necks?

4. What is your name and Social Security number?

by deathgrind on Mon Sep 10, 2007 8:42 pm
As you all know Ive been trying to sell some stuff for an acoustic. Well evreything got done and I went out to Sam Ash to pick this beast up today. Thanks to Kyle for the hook up on sellin the ML too.

Ok so its a 2001 Takamine Custom shop limited edition dolphin guitar. Not one for dolphins but this is hands down the nicest sounding acoustic Ive ever heard so they can be tolerated. Nevertheless, the inlay work is phenomenal on this guitar (dolphins on the rosette and one on the fingerboard). It has a solid sitka spruce top with an extremely tight grain pattern. Solid rosewood back and sides. Macassar ebony fingerboard with black and brwn hues to it and a great set up. Not only did they actually really hook me up with a completely sick deal but set me up with a job interview cause they liked how I played. Enjoy the pron, hope to get some better quality pics soon!

MY ISP decimator is adding noise!
by '87 sherwood on Mon Sep 10, 2007 10:13 pm
What a piece of crap. I've set it up in every way. Messed with all kinds of batteries, in the loop, in the front, I've talked nicely to it ect....

But still it makes noise. While playing runs with silence in between parts I can hear it go swwwooossst. Than it's silent.
At first it only did it sometimes but now it does it all the time. When I turn in off the hiss is unbearable. I run straight into the amp with just the guitar and my typical eq in the loop and what do you know? There's less noise.

Hopefully the shop will exchange it for another one. I bought in the last week of July so we'll see if I have to deal with the company. Sure is a bummer though.

by minimimaniac on Mon Sep 10, 2007 11:11 pm
The 5 most gut wrenching, awe-inspiring tones youve ever heard.

In no order...

Dimebag - Particularly the VDOP, TGST and NFP tones...slamming

EVH - 'Nuff said

Willie Adler & Mark Morton - These two put together have a great powerful tone together, really heavy.

George Lynch - The guitarist that for me defined the 80's metal tone. Think he's lost the plot a little but still a living legend.

Angus Young - AC/DC was my gateway into heavy music, this guy had one powerful crunchy tone that had serious ball-rattling capabilites.

...and Bloodroot Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

No kidding man, your Powerball is the balls...Not my fav all time tone though Very Happy

Im really wanting to get one of these amps, but ive got concerns. as I play in my bedroom I cant have the amp turned up too loud. I can have it moderatly loud just not cranked. ive been talking to someone who has the combo version of the 5150 and he's told me it sounds fine at bedroom volume levels, but im wanting to get the head, not combo, and the head is 120 watts, while the combo is only 60. im assuming the head wont be the same as the combo and im thinking its gonna be too powerful for bedroom playing. so my questions,

1. would the head version be ok to use at bedroom volumes?
2. if not, could i convert it somehow to be 60 watts instead of 120? (i heard someone did this to their 6505 head)

Thoughts on Airports
So here I am, stuck on my arse in Miami international airport. For like the entire day. I was up at O'Dark Thirty to catch a silly too damn early flight to Miami, only to sit in Miami all day just to catch a really LATE flight out of Miami to Trinidood and Tobaccomom.

Traveling is wierd. Back in the days when I was doing shows, you at least knew the people you were traveling with, so it was fun. Sitting in airports is not exactly fun.

Like I got stuck in security for 20 minutes because I had the luck of the draw to get stuck behind some Dildeaux who's drivers license had expired 3 FRIGGIN years ago. How exactly can you be so dense as to have you license expire for YEARS and attempt to get though security on an international flight with a good passport but dead driver's license? Yeah. Been one of those kinda mornings.

I've traveled a lot over the years.

There were a few years where I'd be gold on AA by February and Platinum by mid March. I'd come home every couple weeks and pick up another stack of plane tickets and head back out. So much so that I can generally already be asleep before the plane even pulls back from the gate. Airports are weird. Spending time in them is weirder. They all have this little nuances. Like Miami, it's got the same friggin restaurant in 5 places. They have different names, but the menus are identical and the "staff" all wear the same uniforms. Spend enough time in these places and you start to notice this shit. I'm not entirely sure that's a good thing.

Anyways, ones approach to airports depends on how long you have to park your ass. Luckily for me, Dallas is a major AA hub, so almost all the time my flights are direct, so I don't have a lot of layover camping to do. However, Sport of Pain isn't a direct flight, so here I am. For 7 lovely hours. It's trips like these that one appreciates the closed cup aspect of a pair of AKG 140's or 240's in a big way. Screw the earbuds. Those little dinky microdiaphrams haven't got enough radius to generate enough real low end to block out the myriads of whining kids, pages for Tom, Dick and Harry trying to land a standby ticket, and the miserable TV's in the gates that are invariably tuned to exactly the thing that would be your last choice of programming on earth. So yeah, iPod, big bass cans, and the world can be made to go away.

Of course, this s#%t takes juice, and this 1920x1200 Core Duo Mac Aircraft Carrier of a laptop is not exactly easy on batteries. No worries, for international trips I carry 3 charged spare laptop batteries in case my luggage gets lost in Tangiers or some similar hell hole. However even with that, it's FAR better to score some land juice and keep the batteries in the bag for emergencies, which brings me to the next great skill of any frequent flyer laptop warrior - The Search for the Holy Outlet Of Plentiful AC.

See these airport guys, they have turned milking your every action into a form of residual income. With the proliferation of laptops in the last decade, these guys got smart and realized (in a lot of places) that people in airports with dead and dying batteries and a fixed deadline on the opposite side of the flight they're waiting to board, that they'll practically give their first born male child just to get enough juice to finish off that powerpoint whatever pitch thingy that has em in the airport in the first place. So lately, most of these places charge you for that crap, or even worse, don't, but simply don't have any outlets out there for the masses to jack into.

So here's where the frequent traveler types get clever. You learn stuff. Like airports are a lot like Disney land. People are in them all the time but you never see anybody cleaning. Yet the cleaning MUST occur, or the place would be 2 feet deep in left over candy bar wrappers, paper coke cups and the like in a matter of days. And THAT boys and girls means vacuum cleaners. They gotta have em. And where there's vacuums, there's juice. Sometime between 3-5 AM the cleaning crews show up on the scene with their little brooms and dustbins and vacuums and whatnot and de-spooge the place.

Our job is to find their outlets. This means that in any given gate, SOMEWHERE there will be a single outlet. Usually it's well hidden. Against the wall, behind a row of chairs, out of site. You gotta look but they are there. Now if you're lazy and don't want to do that much scouting, look for one of those rentacart thingies. You know the deal where you put in $0.75, pull a cart out, and stick your luggage on that to wheel your crap around the airport. At any rate, these things take AC in order to release the carts, so if you see one, it's a guaranty there's an outlet someplace near by. Another great place to score an outlet is any place you see one of those battery operated carts that the give the wheelchair crowd rides from gate to gate in. Those things HAVE to charge sometime. And that sometime is invariably when they aren't being used. See one up against a wall someplace and it's pretty good odds the sumbitch is jacked into a charger and the charger is jacked into an outlet. In short, trolley cart thingies are pay dirt for outlets. The other bennie they have over the rentacart racks is they come with a built in chair. You can SIT on the cart. Sometimes the rentacart racks aren't near a row of chairs and you have to plant your ass on the carpet. Not good for long layovers.

So why am I boring you guys with this?

What the hell has this got to do with making cables?

Um. Nothing.

I'm stuck here with nothing else to do, I've got Exile in Guyville is blasting out the whining kid next to me, and writing that was another 10 minutes that I didn't have to think about how I was wasting and entire "day off" in a friggin airport.

Hey, they aren't called ludicrously long for no good reason. =)

Oh Cables, Right

Almost forgot, there was a point to this.

A few weeks ago, some guys were discussing cables in a thread. Over the years this subject seems to come up about every 9 months or so, and every time it does I generally jump in and attempt to dispel some myths about some of the mystic Voodoo crap the manufacturers tend to like to spill about their stuff in order to try to convince you why their copper, dielectric and PVC is better than the next guys copper, dielectric and PVC.

Well this time when I came up when a couple guys were quoting what they were paying for cables I about piddled myself. I've been building my own cables for years (for as long as I've played guitar, actually) and it's never even occurred to me to actually PAY somebody to strip wire, solder and heatshrink a cable. That's just insane in my book. So I half jokingly mentioned that next time before these guys got bent over by Guitar Center to let me know.

Well damned if some of em didn't take me up on it. Since I was already ordering parts and cable to finish off my rack build it was not biggie to add some more wire and connectors to the mix.

So the parts showed up Friday. I'd got stuck at work until real late, and knew I was gonna be here today and out of country all next week so if I was gonna get em built for these guys it'd have to be friday night or not at all, since I still had a bunch of work stuff to do saturday.

So while the forum was busy melting down friday night, I'm up in my office at 1AM snorting solder fumes. After about my 3rd or 4th cable it dawned on me. I may very well be staring at an endless process of building cables for forum guys.

Not that I mind, it's kinda relaxing anyway, and saves you guys a ton of cash, since I'm not really making anything off em, just charging for the parts an shipping. So with that in mind the whole "teach em to fish" thing came to mind. Why not show how it's done? Granted not everybody will have any use for this info, I know it's sure as hell saved me thousands over the years. Just this rack I'm building right now has saved me a ton. For giggles I got a quote from a studio rack house on the lashup job to see what the "pros" would have charged for the lashdown.

For my 2 48 point normalled bays, 1 semi custom panel for the Dmount stuff, and a custom panel for the RJ, Firewire, USB, Toslink and SPDIF stuff plus the power lash, I got a quotes between $3600 and $5400 with 3-6 weeks delivery.

In short, knowing how to do this stuff is a good skill that will find uses for your entire life. I've now wired 2 separate recording studios from scratch (A 24 single suite and a separate facility with a pair of 24 track control rooms, 2 post rooms and 5 live rooms with several dub booths, several large PA's (even the entire monitoring rig used for Farm Aid 3, hoo boy). I've worn out a number of irons and even more tips. I'm sure I have some kind of bizzare cancer waiting to surface from snorting rosin fumes for so long.

This stuff isn't hard. It's not even remotely close to hard. It's by no means rocket science. Anybody can learn to solder and make decent cables. A lot of you guys already know this stuff. This post is to benefit those who've never done it. With any luck you can follow along and see how its done and make your own cable next time you need one.

Truth be told, the "tools" crap you'll need to buy will pay for themselves by the time you've made your second cable if you buy "good" stuff.

If you plan on doing a fair amount of this there's a couple other tools you'd want to get (like if you're going to build a rack, or wire up a PA or something) just to make your life easier.

That said, let's dive in...

What Kinda Spinner you got on that Rod?

First we gotta talk about the "tools of the trade". They're simple.

Image

Yeah, I know. It says "Radio Shack. You know the "You got questions? We Got Blank Stares" people? The same.

Occasionally, these guys have a real gem in the pile of mundane and mostly useless crap they sell. This thing is one of em. Now where I work, we have REALLY nice stuff. High end production level soldering stations with RF controls, vacuum assist desoldering gear, instant temp air solder stuff and the works. It's REALLY nice stuff.

This is what's called a soldering STATION. The difference between STATION and IRON is that the electronics that control the head are in the box rather than in the iron. Irons are typically a fixed wattage resistance based heat making thingie. They work fine. I used them for years. In fact, my first studio was wired with a off the shelf cheap 20 watt iron I bought at Rauncho Shack. Nothing wrong with them. For casual purposes a fixed wattage iron is fine.

Where you might want to consider a station is if you are going to be doing LOTS of soldering (mainly because they heat up very quickly compared to an iron), but also if you plan on doing a lot of guitar pot soldering (for different reasons).

At any rate, STATIONS for the most part weren't really cost effective for the typical weekend warrior for the simple reason that the "normal" cheap or "entry level" soldering station doesn't even work as well as a fixed wattage iron. If you're going to go to a STATION, you want one that's temperature controlled. And therein lies the rub. Temp controlled stations come in 2 flavors. Ones you set the temperature by a knob and ones you set it by changing a tip. It's easier to get reliable temps from changing tips, but they're a pain to work with unless you always solder the same thing. Fine for production work, sucks for general use.

So what you really want is a knob to set the temp, but the problem is on the "cheaper" ones (until recently) the base unit didn't actually MEASURE the tip temperature. It was sort of a general "range" approach but wasn't very accurate. Lots of these type stations have smoked chipsets over the years because they were 30-40 hotter than the knob said.

However, using the wrong wattage iron, or even worse having the right wattage iron sitting there heating up with no load for 20 minutes at a time and getting upwards of 100 degrees hotter than needed is just as bad.

That's what ruins a hell of a lot of pots in guitars.. You end up overheating the wipers trying to get a ground solder on the case of the pot and the pot is smoked as a result. I've seen this countless times.

This is why (in my opinion) if you're going to do any amount of guitar work, a temperature controlled, tip measure station is the shizzle. The only problem traditionally is that a decent one that wasn't junk in a Weller or equal brand would run you $3-400. Yikes. That's why I had irons for years. Until this bad boy came out.

350-900 degree range. Tip measured (i.e. true thermal feedback to the control circuit), no tip changes required to change temp, and it heat in about 1.5 minutes. At $65 it's a friggin steal.

Net result, if you're just gonna do cables, an irons fine. For occasional guitar work, ditto, but be careful. If you're going to do a fair amount of work, or plan on doing a number of guitar pots, get one of these. It's paid for in a few cables.

Finally pick up a tin of tip cleaner (that's the round silver thingie taped to the top of the station. Cleaned tips last infinitely longer than oxidized ones. I usually clean my tips at the end of any long (I.e. iron been on longer than 2 hours) session, then re tin before shutting it off.

Image

Ok, here's another optional tool. It's a heat gun. It's used to heat up shrink wrap. For casual users common cigarette lighters work too, although it's easy to burn yourself on em. This will run you about $35. If you do get one, get the heat reflector thing on the end. Makes the wrap job a lot more uniform. You want something that pukes heat in the 650-800 degree range. No need for anything more than that, in fact if your gun is too hot, it can deform your solder joints. You just need enough heat to shrink the shrink wrap.

Image

Ok, now this is my best buddy. This guys, is what alligator clips are SUPPOSED to be used for. =)

I've had this thing for 25 years now. It's invaluable, and like a good friend has always been there to help when it's been most needed. You'll see why shortly.

Image

Now this is one of those things in life that is the extremely rare exception to nothing good can be that cheap rule. These things are invariably sold by some sleezy looking guy at a county fair, or flea market or what not. They're usually made in China, have no brand name on them, come in a very cheap looking cardboard box and look about as crappily made as humanly possible. In short it looks like a total junk tool.

It's one of those bizzare rare things where it shouldn't work, shouldn't last for diddly, and is so crappily built you're expect it to fall apart on the first use.

This one? 17 years old. I've stripped literally 10's of thousands of conductors with it. I paid $8 for it at a flea market in Saratoga Springs and have used it ever since. In fact I've bought a couple others as spares in case I somehow lose it.

This is quite simply the slickest damn wire stripper made. It's perfect for multiple conductors, makes short work of ribbon cable, and is about a dirt simple to use as you could find. Stuff the wires to be stripped into the jaw as far as you need them stripped and pull the handle. Doesn't matter if you give it 1 conductor or 10, as long as they're "flat" in line it'll do any number of conductors (within reason) at once. Can't say enough good about em. I'd tell you the model and make but (get this) there ISN'T one. The guy who did the "engrish" translations from Chinese apparently never gave it a model number. Or a manufacturer either. As I recall the box said "Wire Appliance Toole" or something like that.

Image

Ok, here's the rest of the "usual suspects"

Here we have a pair of end cutters (I use the $5-6 Excelites, they're fine. Last pretty well, maybe a couple years and when they start getting dull I just toss em and get a new pair.

Additionally your traditional type "wire strippers", these are what I use for the outer jacket of the wire, then I use the chinese mystery tool (described above) for everything inside the jacket. Additionally I have a VOM. Anything will work, but try to look for one that has an audible continuity check so you don't have to look at the meter for simple go/nogo checks. Make sure you turn it off when not in use as they will eat your 9V and nothing sucks more than needing it and not having a battery around. On the meter, if you can get leads with alligator clip ends. Makes it more of a hands free tool.

Image

Basic cheapie precision tool set. I don't use these for screwdrivers but rather for probes and pointy helper tools. I have much better precision drivers I use for real work. What I use these for is I use the smallest straight blade one to "de braid" braided shield wires.

There you have it tool wise. Then there's supplies..

Image

Shrink wrap. This stuff comes in 2:1 and 3:1 flavors. The ratio indicates initial to final size. 2:1 will shrink to 1/2 it's listed diameter, 3:1 will shrink to 1/3 it's listed diameter.

I tend to use all 2:1 stuff, and keep 1/16, 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 diameters in stock. The "size" is the CIRCULAR diameter, not the "flat" measured width. So if you physically measure the stuff when "flat" it will NOT match it's listed size. This stuff is not cheap. In fact, I tend to keep an eye out for specials and then order bulks of that size when I run across it. It does come in colors, although they screwed up my last order and sent me all black when I'd ordered yellow & red for the largest sizes for the outer finals. Sigh.

Then solder. Do NOT use plumbing (acid core) solder. Bad Idea Jeans. Get Rosin core stuff. I tend to buy bulk spools, but don't go nuts. It has a shelf life. Buy no more than you will use in about a year or you'll end up with dried up rosin.

I still have a 30 year old Raucho shack bobbin I wind the stuff onto. The bulk spools save you a ton of money but are unwieldy to handle so I spool about 20' at a time off onto the little light weight Rauncho Shack spool I've had forever.

Lemme See Those Lures There

Ok so with the right tools and supplies in hand lets talk connectors for a bit. Over the years I've seen LOTSA different types of connectors. Some suck, some don't. Often the ones you'd think would suck don't and vice versa. I have a pair of MONGO ass industrial strength, bona Mil Spec SOLID Brass machined ends I've had for years. They're a beautiful bit of machining. Lovely to behold. Hefty as hell (the pair weigh 3/4 of a pound). And guess what? As cable ends, they suck. All that weight makes the end flex the cable horrifically, and the net result these ends complete wear through the sheild conductors in six months flat. Great Idea, s#%t implementation.

Then there's the other extreme. I get psuedo generic connectors by the hundred. These generic's clamp metal is so lightweight you could almost crimp them with your fingers. However, at the end of the day? For inside rack stuff that's never going to move, they're perfect. They have a separate lug for the ground vs. having to solder to the blade riser between the clamp strain relief and the plug end like on most, and if not stress, they last forever. Absolutely fine for rack work.

So with that in mind, lets take a quick tour of currently shipping connectors.

Image

Here's your garden variety "budget" series Neutrik. A little more spendy than the generics (in fact twice as spendy, but still relatively cheap at under 1.50 a toss). These are perfectly decent connectors. In fact, it's what I use on my cords. The ONLY drawback to these guys is the relatively small barrel entrance. You won't be using these for your 10 gauge speaker connectors.

However for guitar cables (Canare GS6 and the various Mogami's I use, they are just fine. Light. Solid. Last for ever.

Image

These are the Mid Range Neutriks. Substantially beefier on the business (soldering) end of the deal, and a much more elaborate strain relief/cable clamp mechanism. Similar to assembling one of thier MX series mic XLR connectors. Substantially heavier, and the price rises to match. If you tend to be a klutz and step on you cables and lot and would tend to pull out the strain relief of the standard type shown prior, this may be your end. Bear in mind that the heaviness does come with another price: You will see the shield conductors eventually wear though with these ends. It's not all bad, as they are beefy enough to survive multiple solder jobs.

Image

Here's a "Near assembled" (not cranked down yet) pix. There's an pair assembled in the background. These are commonly called "Bag Ends" because the Black color mode part number ends in -BAG

Image

Ok now here's the right angle version of the Bag End. Guys, this is one of the very FEW designs I've seen in the last 25 years of a right angle plug that doesn't Suck. Most (the overwhelming most) suck. Hard. The problem with most right angle type designs is the way the strain relief is implemented ultimately ends up CAUSING the failure of the cable. Those crappy "round" right end ones with the "bent knife triangle" strain relief started the whole Dodgy Right Angle POS legacy. You saw em everywhere in the late 70's and early 80's. They were usually on a "coil" cord. Don't even get me started on coil cords., FEH> Disaster not only wating, but Guaranteed to Happen, and Happen At The Worst Possible Time In All The Universe.

Anyway, Neutrik put a fair bit of thought into this one.

Image

The Strain Relief/Clamp chuck inserts like so..

Image

The Top cover goes on like so, and then you crank the chuck down with the end boot just like an MX series. Very clever design, and if you gotta have a right angle end this bad boy is the way to go.

Only drawback: Not cheap. Few good things are.

Image

Ok here we have the new State of the Art in all things Switchy Switchy.

This is the business end of the New Neutrik "Sllent" plug. This guy is NOT cheap. Not even close to cheap. However, it IS probably the best design I've seen for a "silent" plug.

The vast majority of the so called "silent" or "switching" plugs I've seen over the years were great in concept but failed in execution. What these things do is allow you to unplug your guitar while the amp is still hot and in the process of unplugging it at the guitar end it shorts signal to ground, thus avoiding the nasty "BRzhtft PKer POP" that inevitably accompanies unplugging from the guitar end on a high gain amp.

Great idea, but in practice, most of these mechanisms eventually get fist Goo in the end over time and they either stop "silencing" (bad) or just plain stop working period (really bad). As a result I've avoided em like the plague for years. Each new design comes out, and I'll play around with one but would never trust it to gigging.

This fella is different. It uses a proximity magnet to drive a reed switch in a sealed container to do the heavy lifting. In theory it's foolproof. It sure looks good in theory and the fit and finish on the execution is very good.

Image

Assembly is almost identical to the Bag End and MX series XLR stuff. Slide shell over business end, slide chuck/relief into shell.

Image

Add boot to end and crank. Dirt simple. What's even nicer is the assembled end is nearly identical in weight to the Bag End, so while heavier than the N2 series, it's not a boat anchor. The OTHER problem with most switching ends is they weigh WAY to much. This guy is heavy but not obscenely so.

Image

Here it is assembled, and you can see the sleeve under my thumb is the business end of the "silencing" part of the deal. As the cable goes into the guitar this sleeve retracts into the end, thus releasing the reed switch in the capsule to de-short the signal from ground.

Image

When fully engaged, the circuit acts as normal. Only drawback to these guys are cost, and they don't "meter" right. They will appear to be broke-dhick when you meter them by the very fact that they are a dead short when not inserted into a jack. Not a huge deal but be aware of it.

Now, as you can see above the Straight version of the Silent Ends is available now. They also have a right angle version in the works and I have a few on order, but they still hasn't shipped from Neutrik yet. With any luck I'll have some in in a few weeks.

Whatcha Using For String there Buddy?

So here's where the rubber meets the road. The "wire". I know I've harped on it here and in many other forums over the years but I'll say it again.

85% of audio signal wire sales are either absolute garbage cable that is an utter waste of copper, or absolute snake oil.

Things to know:

1) Oxygen free doesn't man jack squat to audio signals. The effects that manufacturing technique solve address issues in signal propagation in wire in the GIGAHERTZ and UP Ranges. Guys, no matter what the drooling Monster Cable Spiff Hunting Sales bozo tells you Oxygen free wire doesn't do DICK at the audio range. Really. Makes absolutely no difference at all. None. What sucks is it's so easy to do these days that everybody does it simply because it doesn't really add any cost to the wire and "sounds good" from a Willy Loman standpoint. Even the "respectable" guys have Oxygen Free listed in the product specs.

2) The only thing you need to give a s#%t specification wise as far as guitar cable wires go is capacitance. Just like a guitar tone circuit, adding capacitance to the signal path acts like a high end filter. In general the longer the cable, the more the capacitance, the more the top end get's rolled off.

Now lets get practical about it. For cables under 20 ft, almost ANY decent cable (like the 5 or 6 I use) are just fine and you'll never hear the filtering effect. The cumulative effect really doesn't kick in (unless the wire is just horrible capacitance wise) until you get over 20 feet. Now for REALLY long runs my "short list" of 5 or 6 wires drops to 2. For anything over 25' I use a Mogami wire designd for long runs. It's not quite as super quiet in terms of handling noise but if you gotta go that long, it's the wire to get.

3) Inductance. Some MFG's will publish inductance specs on their wires, but for guitar stuff (e.g 1 conductor + return unbalanced stuff) it's irrelevant. Only comes into play with balanced signals (like mic lines). In short, don't worry about this spec.

4) Handling characteristics. No, this isn't about how well it does a slalom cone run at 80 MPH. This refers to how much "handling noise" the cable itself imparts when it's moved. Handling noise is cause by the physical movement of the conductors making up the shield against the dielectric that isolates the shield from the signal conductor(s). There's two ways of handling it: You can for the most part avoid it if you don't use a braided shield. Braided shields radically increase handling noise. Their "supposed" benefit is the increased RF rejection that comes from the braided shield. To some extents there is SOME truth to this but a well designed Spiral Serve shield can hit 100% coverage as well, but you have to toss more copper at it to do so. There's a number of design tradeoffs that ensue in both camps. Most of the "better" braid guys solve the noise issue by going to a second conductive coating on the dielectric to prevent the noise. Only drawback to this is that it increases capacitance in the process, although if you use good materials, only marginally.

And guys, this is the ONLY shit you will ever need to worry about in terms of guitar cable. Any other "pseudo science" they try to ram up your keester to get you to part with your cash is pure liquid snake oil, which has only ONE real purpose: To get you to part with more cash.

I don't have the time, or energy to detail all the ways these losers will get you to part with more cash and the lies they'll cheerfully manufacture right out of their asses in the process, but here's the only thing you need to know in this category:

If the wire costs more than $1.00 US per foot, you are being ripped off. It's that simple. Bear in mind this doesn't account for ends, but if you're paying more than $1 a foot, you are being had. Seriously. I base this knowledge that in of the 4 criteria you DO give a s#%t about, of all the manufacturers that nail THAT stuff there isn't a single one of them that makes a wire suitable for guitar use that costs more than $1.00 a foot. End of story. Now granted if you are buying a pre-assembled cable you will be getting hit for some labor to make the thing (which is fair, even solder sniffers gotta eat. Can't live on rosin fumes alone), so factor that in.

Ok nuff said in theory. Lets look at some whyrez!

Image

Now this here? This here is good stuff. This is Canare GS-6. It IS braided but has a good plastic conductor coat outside the dielctric. it's 49pF/ft, so I wouldn't want to use it for much over 20' but good stuff. Despite the braid it has damn near zero handling noise. Good for Scott Ian type stage personas.

Usually can be had for under $0.75/ft. Comes in Black, Red & Blue.

Image

This stuff is Mogami 2549. This is WAY lo cap stuff. Makes great LONG guitar cables & mic cables. Not QUITE as handling quiet as the Canare but good stuff nonetheless. K0 of 23pF/Ft. but an even more astounding K1 of 3.4 pF/Ft. Comes in Black, Blue, Red & Yellow. Also can be had for near $0.75 a foot.

Not shown:

Mogami 2893. I love this stuff. 4 con, dual twisted pair configuration, minimum OD, still with surprisingly low 23 pF/Ft K0 and a very acceptable 3.4 pF/Ft K1. Not quite as indestructable due to the smaller outer jacket but still has very good handling characteristics. In Black, Blue, Brown, Gray, Purple, Green, Orange & Yellow. A hair more spendy, but still can be generally had for under $0.80 a foot. I use this stuff for all my patch cables, and "on stand" fixed mic cords under 30'.

Mogami 2534. This is 2893 on steroids. Best mic cable in the known universe that isn't snake oil based.
K0 of 20 pF/Ft and K1 of 4 pF/Ft. Besides and absurdly low cap value, this stuff is Roger Daltry's wet dream in the handling dept. As close to immune to handling noise as you can get. Spendy though. This is right up there at $1.00 a foot. This is the most expensive signal cable I would ever buy. Also comes in the rainbow of Black, Blue, Brown, Gray, Purple, Green, Orange & Yellow. VERY GOOD STUFF.

ENOUGH! Teach my ass to fish already!

Righty ho!

Ok, I'll show you a couple different wires with different ends going on.

Image

First I strip the outer coat. I use "normal" strippers for this. It takes a while to learn how to get the outer jacket off without buggering the shield. Suck it up untill you get the feel. Practice on a dead guitar cable you're going to toss anyway.

Image

In this case it's GS-6. Braid shields take a bit of work to "unwind". I use a very small precision screwdriver to pick the "groups" apart. Ideally at the end you have 4 or so completely intact groups with all thier conducts separated from the rest of the "bundle"

Image

You then take ONE of those groups and twist it up. Don't do the WHOLE shield. It's unnecessary, and in fact will even make soldering a bitch, so don't just cave in and twist the whole mess up. If you've done it right, the bundle you twisted up will all come out of the jacket at nearly the same place around the circumference. Cut the other crap off with the Excelites. In this case the bundle on the left was my other alternative to twist. It gets pruned.

Image

Okies, now here's our "prepped" shield. No hairs hanging out, very clean. Private Pyle would probably start rambling on about full metal jacket at this point. That's why I keep sharp ass Excelites around (seen to the right).

Image

Ok here we have used our normal strippers to cut back the conductive plastic dielectric coating. What's left of it is the black bit at the bottom.

Image

So here we've stripped the center conductor and spun it up as well. We're good to tin & solder at this point.

Image

Load one gator with the end, the other with the cable. Tin the shield and center conductor, and pre tin the center conductor of the connector. Now PRE LOAD the cable with your barrel end, the insulator it comes with, and your inner and outer shrink wraps. Then clip the wire.

Image

Adjust the gator clips to hold the center conductor in place for soldering. THIS is why you are insane to do this stuff without one. It leaves you totally hands free to just deal with the iron.

Image

Ok heat the WORK flow the solder to the joint. If you don't know the basics of soldering, there's TONS of good tuts on the web. I'll leave that part as an exercise for the reader.

Solder the center, then trim the ground return pre tinned, and position and solder it.

Image

Position your Inner shrink so it buts right up to your ground solder joint.

Image

Shrink that. I'll tell ya, I did it the old fashioned way for years with ciggy lighter but after using a gun, you'll never go back. It's just so much less painful (literally) and the result is just a thing of beauty.

Image

Now for the Bag End and silent end connectors there IS no outer shrink like you'd have on the traditional ends so you go right to assembly.

Image

Slide the chuck on over the shrink and but it up to the end (make sure you get it oriented correctly). Kudos to the engineer at Neutrik who decided to rev the chuck to allow it to be slid on post solder. In the old days if you forgot you had to de-solder the whole end to get the chuck on. Good call on their part.

Image

Slide the end on over the plug, push the choke up solid to the end and bring the boot barrel up the line.

It takes some practice with these to get used to holding the cable so it doesn't rotate as you start to crank the boot on but pay attention when you do this. Lotta noobs end up twisting their nice solder joint inside just gorilla cranking the boot on. This is about finesse, not brute force.

Image

Net result. Very nice. Very clean.

Ok same song, 2nd verse. This time we'll do up a plain "old school" end on a lo cap long run 2549 cable.

Image

Ok outer cover stripped, ground pruned and inner conductors ready to trim and strip. Note the 2 clear plastic fillers. These are designed to prevent cable deformation when it gets rolled over on by stuff. Very nifty. Keeps that nice round look (as well as maximizes the noise rejection of the twisted pair). These get cut off with the Excelites.

Image

With the fillers cut, "pre" load the clip with the end, and use the end to measure how much to cut off on the inner conductors. I take it to the end of the shaft, just south of the inner conductor's protrusion out the end of the shaft.

Image

Here's where the no name china wonders earn their keep. Doesn't matter if it's two conductors or 8, it will nail em all in one pull. GOD I love that thing.

Image

Now when I use "mic" (i.e. more than one center conductor) cable for guitar or unbalanced work, I tin the inners together. Then I cut a piece of small shrink and shrink the inners together up to the beginning of where they're tinned together.

Image

Shrinking the "inners"

Image

So here's the "shrink sealed" inners and tinned outer good to go. Load up the clip and solder center & ground.

Image

Here I'm shrinking the "inner" shrink. For these connector types I use two separate passes of shrink wrap. The first butts up to the ground joint INSIDE the crimp clamp.

Image

Once that cools I crimp it, then slide the second "outer" shrink up with the insulator sleeve, position the "outer" over the crimp clamp and up to just south of the center conductor's solder point, and shrink the outer. This adds great structural integrity to the entire assembly.

Image

Now you can slide the insulator over the whole bit, and then crank on the barrel.

While you CAN do yet another layer of Shrink (1/2" for outside the barrel) it's totally an aesthetic thing. There's no real "need" to have it there.

Image

Fini!

There you have it. Everything you need to know to build your very own world class guitar cable.

World class you say?

Damn straight son. You may be able to pay more, but I'll damn sure guaranty it won't SOUND one bit better than what you see right there.

All it takes is "good" materials, a small investment in some tools that will last you for your entire life, and a little bit of practice. You now all have my permission to stop wasting your money.

From the bowels of Trinidood and Tobacco, home of the worlds most hosed net connection, I hope this was worth the long assed read.

If there's errors in this post, it'll have to wait until I get home to fix. At the sub modem speeds I'm getting from the hotel I'll be lucky if this posts even makes it. There's no way in hell I'll be able to view it, let alone edit it.

Lemme know if this had any value you for ya!

=)

Cheers!

I'm Tired Of The Same Old Sounding Stuff
by Axex on Tue Sep 11, 2007 2:02 am
I listen to alot of stuff. Alot of differen't genre's of music. I listen to Frank sinatra sometimes. When I listen to heavy metal. Alot of it is sounding the same. Same vocals. Same breakdowns. Same fast, no-rythm solo's. And I'm just tired of it. Anyone else waiting for the next Pantera, or Metallica? Not a copycat band, but a completely unique band with their own sound. I'm tired of Metalcore completely. I feel like it's taking over alot of the metal scene. It all sounds the same. IDK. I'm just throwing my views in. Just gotta stick with the old bands until something new comes.

Hi Everyone, just got my first set of wings, DAMN !!!!!! I'll never buy any other guitar from now on, "GIVE ME DEAN OR GIVE ME DEATH" This thing is beyond amazing, I've been playing 23 years and owned some increadible guitars(such as the one below, thought you all would get a kick out of this one)
And honestly the "Yellow Devil" Razorback is the best playing, sounding guitar I've ever owned.

My first experence with a Dean was just about one year ago, I bought my son the Baby ML Dimebolt, and the thing played fantasticlly, I coulden't believe it, I've owned guitars over the years I paid thousands for, and the lil ML played as well as any of them, so I never even went to a music store to play a full sized one, just saved and ordered it, just recieved it about a week ago, and WOW, let me just say I was not dissappointed in the least, It has way exceeded my expectations, but hey if it was good enough for "DIME" well enough said.
I'd just like to thank all the folks at Dean guitars for such an amazing instrument !!!!!!!!!!!!

What's the symbol on the 12th fret of his signature guitar? I thought it was the Outworld symbol, but I looked at it closely and it doesn't really look like it at all. Also, what is Xenocide graphic? I can't really make out whats going on... sorta looks like clockwork and spines running down either sides of the guitar...
Anyone Else Very Hard On Themselves?
by Axex on Tue Sep 11, 2007 4:49 am
I'm frustrated right now. Do yall ever get sick of your playing-style? I get into these patterns where I create stuff that sounds the same as my other riffs. I use an oldschool tape recorder. But anywayz, I'm pissed off. I get real hard on myself, and just want to stop playing. When I can't create, I kind of go crazy. I try to expand my playing skills, but it's just hard to do it. Creating new riffs and solo's is hard dude. I have like 74 minutes of 10 second riffs recorded. How do you reach out more and create? Do I just need a break from playing? If I had some decent recording equipment, I'd take the riffs, and make them into songs. Mad

Anybody played one of these things? Didn't know they existed until yesterday (I don't get out much apparently). I'd been thinking about getting a MIM strat used, but popped a dvd in last night and this guy has got this cool looking guitar and starts playing it in 12 string mode. then clicks the switch to standard 6 string, it sounded unbelieveable. He didn't say what it was but i could see variax on the head stock so did the net search thing and found it to be the 700 (it runs about $1600) and models 25 different guitars. Apparently you can get patches for this thing to get other tones and there is workbench software and it uses PODxt live (I have no idea what that is yet). I still want to get a 79 ML next year, but I'll jump on this thing way before a strat if it's 1/2 as cool as it sounds (sounded on the dvd anyway). Anybody with experience on one of these things? Thanks

I love days where I can work seriously without any distractions. And go home with a feeling of "Well I sure did a hell of a job today."

And as evident by the progress in the built of neck-through solid, today was one of those days. But I also was working on something else aside from that neck-through one.

My Warmoth body came in so I figured I'd post some pics. Pretty excited about this project. Body is the Jackson King V shape and made of Alder. Kept it pretty simple and am just going with a single EMG 81 with 1 volume knob and it's routed for a recessed Floyd Rose. I have a 24-fret neck coming from them too but it's still in production. It will be maple w/ an ebony fretboard, reverse Jackson style headstock. I'm thinking about painting the guitar snow camo but it just depends on how I feel about my painting skills once I get started.

Czech out the Korina V twins... sort of!!!
by Northwinds on Tue Sep 11, 2007 10:40 pm
Picked up the one on the left today, never saw one this color. It's exactly like my old lawsuit Ibanez V. Several differences between it and the blonde bombshell next to it also so I need some Czech experts to fill me in on it

Why the total contrast in color? The amber has a serial number 80041, the European Custom Select info on the back of the headstock is all in gold versus the blonde's being all black

The pups appear and sound quite different. The neck position pup has a Dean logo which the blonde does not. This guitar came screaming right out of the case. The bridge pup has so much more growl and bite versus the blonde's much more dignified and brighter sound that I had to turn the SLX's gain down to almost nothing in order to whip through Yngwie's I'll See the Light Tonight and it sounded fantastic

The amber also weighs noticeably less, the blonde is a boat anchor

Either way, I am totally psyched w/ this latest acquisition and hope to get some info on the amber. I would also like to know if there is anyone who can decipher the serial numbers so I can get an idea of when they were both built

My advice, if you don't have a Czech V, find one, buy it and die with it. They are unreal for build quality, looks and TONE and the most bang for your buck

Sorry for the crappy pic but it's raining like hell here and you will just have to excuse the pigsty as it's laundry day

I will shoot some pretty pron next sunny day

Is Creating Your Own Intrumentals Easy?

The more I play backtracks of guys like Steve Vai and Jimi Hendrix, the more and more I like playing that kind of music. Soloing through a whole song is just the perfect way for me to express myself, but I can't use other people's backtracks in my music. What's a good software to use? That has piano's and all that stuff to make backtracks? Most of the backtracks I use are keyboards and bass, no guitar. Is it hard to create that type of stuff?

stuff like that? Is it real hard to get a beat going, even if you can't really play the piano or bass with computer software?

Which one is better the 255 or the regular ones with the dimebucker? I mean iknow 255 has 81 and 85 and more frets but is that all. Is the 255 built with better quality or are they the same?

If anyone can help me that would be greatly appreciated, thnx!!

GAS has been attacking hard!
by Hot Sauce on Wed Sep 12, 2007 3:18 am
Sad

Quit my job about 3 weeks ago due to the boss and his wife and stepfather not knowing what they were doing. They were smartasses and complete nimrods. The place is about to go out of business.

But that out of the way...no money...

And when you have no money, what happens?

GAS ATTACKS!

So right now i'm trying to decide between this:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Dean-EVO-Noir-Guitar?sku=519844

And this:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-S470DXQM-Electric-Guitar?sku=519933

The groovy-riff side of me wants to get the EVO Noir, but the instrumentally inclined, whammy bar squealing side of me wants the Ibanez. Now, i've played the Ibanez...I love it. Absolutely amazing guitar, but then there's the Dean with it's slick looks. Every Dean guitar i've ever played has been great, so I trust that it is a great guitar.

Guitar GAS out of the way, we move on to amps and effects:

Can't decide on what kind of effects unit I want. I've been looking at rack units and floor units...can't decide which. The Rocktron Xpression looks good to me as does a lot more rack stuff i've had my eye on.

GAS really sucks. Mad

The Caddy is HERE! Now I get it.
by electronpirate on Wed Sep 12, 2007 6:00 am
I posted a bit ago how I purchased a Dean Caddy TimeCapsule. Black with Gold *stuff*.

It finally arrived today.

Opening with trepidation...I've plenty of experience with UPS's ham-handed ways. Well packed...lots of peanuts (case should have been wrapped in plastic first, but a detail.) Much smaller than I expected as I've seen the case for the 'V'...HUGE.

Ah, there she is. A vision. Check it over for nicks, scars, wear. Hmm. The Gold seems pretty worn, and I was led to believe this was *barely played*...<sigh>. Still a beautiful guitar. Will be posting for stuff to 'shine up' the gold.

A quick strum. Ooh, nice. Odd, but I like the neck feel. Zero adjustment time for me, it just feels right. Curved fretboard and my fingers are flying. Hmm, there's a pound of grit on the strings. Quick change those suckers. Nice feel in the machines, oiled and solid feeling.

Enough! Kiss the wife, slap the kids, and off to the practice space for the shakedown cruise.

Plug in, tune up, turn on. First impression: very nice feel to the guitar. Lighter than a Les Paul, but all the tone. With my small hands, very easy to get to the higher registers. I've got to make some adjustments for the larger frets to keep in tune while playing chords. First test is clean with chorus and 'verb... a touch hot on the PUPS, so back off the volume, and a very nice clean. Crisp and airy, but a bit sterile. Not as impressive as my Strat, but still very playable. Next, driven Fender, ooh, a bit flubby, tweak some things amp side, and tightens up nicely. I even back off the treble on the Bridge PUP and wow, I'm in LeoFenderland. Happy so far.

The real test for a humbucker equipped guitar. Marshall. This is where it SHINES. With only PUP change, volume control, and attitude, I go from clean to scream with excellent results. Lordy, this is what it's all about! A cliche' yes, but I feel like this thing WANTS me to play it. Note definition, easily controlled feedback, and crunch galore. I kick in some boost and I'm in heaven (lose 1 hour here.) Off to more 80's and heavier based tones, and I'm gone for another hour.

So, 4 hours later, I take off my goggles, draw a deep breath, and wonder how the f$%k it's been so long that it took me to get a Dean Caddy? After years of hearing about how great they are, and always being 'not sure', I finally take the leap and realize...I'm home. Funny, since I've wanted one since I saw Kerry Livgren play one live about a billion years ago...

These are my first impressions. I'll be playing a show this weekend for a Comcast Denver Bronco's tailgate, and there'll be more to talk about, but so far, count this one down as a kill. I'll post some pics manana as I've done all I can tonight.

Lovin' it.

EP

BTW, I'm playing an Axe-FX into a clean poweramp with a Mesa 2x12 V30's. Never been happier with a rig in my life! (And I've owned WAY too many high end tube amps...)
Regarding the 5150....
by 4x12 on Wed Sep 12, 2007 6:34 am
Sup guys, got a few questions for you regarding the 5150. I've read and heard that the early models of the 5150 heads had the best gain available... something about it being better built?!?!? Is this really true? and how can you tell an earlier model from a later 5150 model ? And does this apply to the 5150 II also?

Thanks,

Anyone had experience with a Randall RH50T/RG50TC?
by Serbusfish on Wed Sep 12, 2007 12:00 pm
anyone here played the randall RH50T head or the RG50TC (combo version)? its a tube amp and im gassing for tube tone bad, my first choice is a peavey 6505 but i found this and it is around half the price of the 6505. The harmony central reviews are very mixed, some people love it, while others hate it. i found a few videos on youtube but when people play along to a cd it can be hard to hear the amp quality. has anyone here played one? can you vouch for whether it would be worth buying instead of a 6505? the main reason i want one is the price, they are around £379 while the 6505 is around £679, if they provide a decent metal tone (in flames, machine head, BFMV etc) I will get one, otherwise i will save up the extra cash for the 6505

Well im still having a little trouble deciding what head i want. My decision as of now is between a 6505, a Randall (not sure if solid state or tube) or a 5150. Ive heard alot of good things about the 6505, but im not sure as to if it will give me what im looking for seeing as how ive never actually played one. Im looking for a crunch, similiar to dimebags early tone or an early metallica tone, the 5150 ive heard is similiar to the 6505 (which would make sense), but then theres Randall, a company ive always loved, but what head is more suitable for my needs? Any input would be very helpful, Thanks guys.

he just doesnt get that active pickups ARE versitile!!!

Razorback DB Add-ons

Ok so here's the deal...
I recently bough a brand-new Razorback DB and I was looking to add some stuff on to it and I need a few questions answered:

- I'm wanting to purchase a separate Licensed Floyd Rose, now the Razorback DB is string-thru so is it possible to add on a tremolo system to a string-thru?

- Second, I'm also wanting to get a Dimebucker pick-up but I'm wonering if this the best pick-up yo get. I play heavy metal and hard rock like Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Trivium, and Guns N'Roses and was wondering which pick-up(s) would be the best to get.

Actually the price wouldn't any where close to a standard...
I bought my DB for $450,
I found a Floyd rose for $55,
and pickups are only usually around $100+

...so I save a lot of money
and I didn't have $1100 to begin with so I wasn't able to buy a standard (no matter how much I wanted one...) Sad
Is This Wrong?
by Axex on Thu Sep 13, 2007 1:29 am
I ran over my recorded riffs today, and I noticed that alot of em sound different than the others. Style wise, how heavy it is etc. Is it wrong to have different sounding music? For example, one of my riffs sounded something Zakk would create, the next one sounded something like shadows fall. Now, would it sound stupid if I created a cd, and some of the songs sounded like two different styles? But I mean, that's how some of these bands that stand out, "stand out". They're really versatile. IDK. I create alot of different things. I don't like going by the book. I play what I feel. Someone enlighten me Confused I don't want to sound like an artist that can't make up his mind on what he wants to play.
Now granted, I probably couldn't do a better video demo

I have a chance to see Breaking Benjamin, Seether, and Three Days Grace on November 6th at the Bancorp South Center in Tupelo, MS.

While i'm not a fan of any of the bands (despite their abilities to write catchy songs), i'd really like to go. Not a fan of the music, but I just enjoy concerts.

Should I go? I know it's up to me, but I don't know if I should go or not.

For All Those Who Have Made Custom Guitars, Come Here

^Winner. All of these with Maple necks though.

BUT.... I don't know how to build guitars. Does Warmoth offer to build them for a fee? And to those who have built their own, how does it play and sound? I want something that'll play like a Fender. I'm not sure what Fender would charge for a custom guitar like that. But it'll prolly be expensive. Maybe one of the Dealers here could do it?
Someone rate a guitar I'm planning to build
by dambros on Thu Sep 13, 2007 12:28 pm
Hi, this is my first topic in this forum. I'm from Brazil and like everyone else who likes metal, I'm a great fan of Dean guitars and off course Dimebag (RIP!).

But like many I can't afford a Dean right now, so I have an idea in my mind and I'm really close to accomplish it.

Please gimme some tips about this guitar:
Shelter California Deluxe
Seymour Duncan JB Jr. (Bridge)
Seymour Duncan Little 59' (Neck)
Gotoh Tuners

I have about $800 to spend in this guitar. Is it a good investiment, or I can get better things for the same amount?

About the song I intend to play, is basicly rock, metal and blues.

Sorry for the poor english and thanks for reading.
UK Guys:- Guitar Village 'BGM' Sale

I thought I'd give you UK guys a heads up on this.

Guitar Village has a 'Boss Gone Mad' sale coming up. Last time they threw one of these, I was flat broke, but there were some INCREDIBLE deals.

http://www.guitarvillage.co.uk/default.asp

All sale prices are available to view from the 16th of September, with the working-week-long online sale starting Monday 24th September. It'd be good if we could get these guys on the forum!

by funkify on Thu Sep 13, 2007 3:22 pm
Hey, who wants to jam together, trade a few chops? If you have a decent internet connection, go here:

http://livejam.jimheidinger.com/

you don't even have to register. anyone can listen, and anyone can jam TOGETHER in real time, if you can get your instrument signal to your computer.

i connect to my computer with a POD device that has a USB connection, but there are many people who mic their amps. you could even mic a practice amp with a cheap pc microphone and it would be fine.

join in, or you are welcome just to listen and comment. all styles of music welcome. especially from those who jam.

I hate UPS
by Trendkiller96 on Thu Sep 13, 2007 4:26 pm
Alright so 2 weeks ago I pick up a Zakk Wylde EMG set off ebay. Talk to the seller, tells me that the pickups should be there in 3 to 5 business days. Last Thursday I come home, check my mail box, nothing. Go upstairs to my apartment. What's this? A notice from UPS! Telling me that they'll come back for delivery the next day from 2 to 5. Alright, that's kool. I ask my mom to make sure she doesn't go anywhere at that time. I come home. No UPS guy. I sit at home all day, pissed off that the guy never came and will have to wait another 2 days to get the pickups I ordered.

Monday rolls around. I get home from school. Lo and behold, another UPS notice, telling me that it was their THIRD time coming to my house and no further delivery attempts would be made. I call them, ask them what happened to the 2nd attempt, and they tell me that the guy did in fact come to my apartment at 7.30 on Friday night. Which is total bull cause I was home that night. They tell me they can arrange for 3 more deliveries or I can pick it up from the other side of Toronto.

So last night, finally, I get my damn pickups. If I ever get anything from ebay again, I am explicitly going to ask the seller NOT to use UPS. Rant over.

Thoughts on Randall RH150G3 and RH50T?
by Serbusfish on Fri Sep 14, 2007 12:52 am
I posted this on another forum so im just gonna paste it in:

Im after a new amp. atm I have a randall rg100es which I have set up for a dirty chainsaw kind of distortion (think pantera) but I want a head that can sound similar to bands like machine head, bfmv, lamb of god, in flames, etc and I was going to get a peavey 6505, but they are very expensive over here. so ive been looking at cheaper alternatives, and found good reviews for both the randall RH150G3 and the RH50T. anyone had any experience with either of these? i know the G3 is solid state, and the RH50T is tube, but which would be better for the kinds of band tones i mentioned? i would presume the tube head would be better, but it is kind of cheap so im not sure, any advice and which would be best to go for?

Jack Owen...Obituary,but no Dean?
by Lunatic on Fri Sep 14, 2007 7:26 pm
Last night i went to see Obituary and alabama thunderpussy etc. in toronto (i got free ticket to go) anyway me and my buddy were standing about 10ft from the stage and by the enternce where the bands come n go.
I kept having this one guy always coming and going always saying "excuse me" and squeezing by us, and i said to my friend, dude that guy looks like jack owen from cannibal corpse/Deicide.
he said doubtful, and 2 dudes infront of us said nah.
i kept pushing the issue,so when he came by again i said "hey jack" he looked and said hey then grabbed a beer and stood behind us,i said hey are you jack owen? he said yup,and then some dude leaned in and said hes fuckin with yous.
anyway the lights go dim and the show starts and theres the dude on stage playing guitar but it wasnt a dean, after the first song they annouce its jack owen from deicide filling in tonight for trevor.
anyway i guess my points were... 1. its cool just to have the band members walk around and chill with the crowd at these concerts
2.i got to see jack owen kick ass playing obituary tunes that he had to learn in 4 hours and 3. when did Jack owen stop playing deans?

New Down material on their Myspace
by Schtoogie on Sat Sep 15, 2007 12:29 pm
http://www.myspace.com/downnola

I pre-ordered the album, but all the material I heard from it was some live performance of I SCREAM filmed on a crappy home video cam with scratchy, crummy sound and grainy video.

My impression from these songs that have been uploaded is... crushing, scratches that Down itch so many people get, and yet melodic and incredibly heartfelt. Very rarely does a heavy group come along that you can not just hear and feel the music, but feel the soul, the life, and the energy put into it as well. That's what I love so much about Down. I'm a big NOLA blues / jazz fan, I really love the upbeat high-tempo s#%t that comes out of there, but ultimately I am a huge heavy metal junkie. Seeing the different spectra intersect with each other and coagulate to make a mixture such as this is just frippin satisfying on so many levels.

Really looking forward to this album!!

So last night at sound check my 6505+ took a dump! Yeah, that sucks but oh well. It can be fixed.... So I went in the trailer and realized that the only other amp I had available was my Valve King 112. That's the 50 watt 1X12 combo. Ok so, I always talk tough about how great it sounds and I would use it as a backup.... Here was GO time. So I nervously plugged the speaker out on the rear into my 6505 cabinet. Holy friggin $hit!!!!!! I couldn't believe my ears! Totaly brutal through a 4X12. The best part was the internal speaker is deactivated when you use it like this!!!! My drummer told me I should use this amp every time we play!! LOL I don't know about that, but I was really happy. We are in NYC tonight and I will have to use it again, so I hope it's as great second time around. Gotta put my 6505+ in the shop when I get the chance, but till then I am pleased with these results.

Idea for a custom guitar...
by xero_uk on Sat Sep 15, 2007 10:31 pm
I've kinda decided I want a guitar that is just mine. Something I've designed so I'm not restricted to what I will be allowed to have on this beast. I've been after something like this for a while and after seeing that dudes Ran Custom and reading up on Ran Guitars I see little choice but to go for it.

So here is what I have come up with after a couple of hours on Photoshop:-

Image

It's a Washy Stealth Shape.
Metallic White with Metallic Black Bevels and matching HS.
White BLUSA X500XL, 1 Volume, 1 Tone and a Kill-Switch.
Black Floyd.
Custom Inlay at 12th Fret ("Music" in Japanese Kanji).

What do you guys think? I'd really like some feedback on this, and Ran guitars in general.

Also, does anyone know if that really is the Kanji for "music"? I've brielfly looked it up and that's the only one I could find.

Thanks

So how many of you are fans of the EVO line? Which model(s) do you prefer and why? What do you think of the EVO with the addition of the V headstock, the S3/S3noir?

Couple of questions(i love new topic button ^_^)

Laughing Laughing Laughing

But to be serious, I have a couple of questions. Wink

1. The MKH signature. You guys said it looks like a stealth. that shape has REALLY grown on me and I was wondering was company makes them and if they are still in production. Confused

2. Does anyone know of a 7-string for $600 that isnt either in the shape of the Viper, a Strat or a Washburn Scott Ian series? It really sucks cause I have no desire for those shapes and every 7 string has one of those shapes except the expensive, signature models. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

3. Also, if anyone has or has played on a Jackson USA King V KV-2, your thoughts would be greatly appreciated because I have played ther Jacksons before, and I like their feel, but I still dont want to pay $2500 for a guitar that people say sucks before I even play it at a Guitar Center.(duh Laughing ) It's a badass looking guitar. One guy even said that his came with the truss rod at an weird angle in the neck. It wasnt warped, if thats what your thinking, but insteadit wasnt alinged with the locking nut screws. Heres the YouTube link if youre confused. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvAevD5Nmpw About 5:38 into the vid.

by electronpirate on Mon Sep 17, 2007 3:58 am
So played a gig in Denver for Comcast. They usually have a *tailgate* which is a way of calling a corporate party a beerbust. Played the new Caddy. The tone was awesome, the playing easy. Although I STILL need a bit of work on the tone switch (I still have Les Paul on my mind...)

Comcast: Alot of money thrown at this. We tone down our set to play a bit more classic rock, etc. It's a good time for all, and its a good paycheck as well...

We're workin' our way through 'American Band', just finishing off the double solo, and I glance out, and who walks through but Dave Mustaine. I guess the poor bastid is a Raiders fan. Not even a glance at the band...ah, what a review.

But hey, the Caddy played GREAT! Lovin' that guitar.

And I got it... For free.

Long story short, my friend's boss is a really nice person, and I'm the only person that really played her 30th Anniversary V. She had already been wanting to buy me a guitar, I guess.

So, after a LONG weekend, I got a free Dean. I'll post pics when I get the badboy to my house.

Help - Looking for metal gain
by Harry P. Ness on Mon Sep 17, 2007 7:38 am
I'm not getting the metal tone that I want right now. I can't afford too much, 400 and under, and I want a tube sound. I can't decide if I should get a ValveKing combo or get a Damage Control Solid Metal pedal. I'm sure everyone will tell me to go with the VK, but has anyone here played this pedal? It's a dual tube pedal and I've read nothing but good reviews about it, with more than a few reviewers claiming they own amps like the 5150, JSX, Mesas, and that this pedal's gain is as good or better. Here's a couple sites with reviews.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Damage-Control-Solid-Metal-Dual-Tube-Distortion-Pedal?sku=154702

With either one I've got two eq pedals and an od pedal to boost it. What do you think?
General Pedal Stuff (née "Noise Gates")
by Meisterjäger on Mon Sep 17, 2007 8:02 am
I really need a noise gate or 2 now to go with my new amp acquision.

Looking on fleabay UK, there's an ISP Decimator pedal that I'm keeping my eye on (and callin DIBS on, for the record Wink) for the next week, and a Boss NS-2 I'm also looking at, hoping it's gonna end cheap. I'm desperate to score that ISP, so I'm gonna be paying real money for it.

But there's a rackmounted noisegate on there, an Aphex 105 Logic Assisted Noise Gate/Expander.

Expander?

Any experiences?

I'll try an score it if it's goin for sensible money...

Silvertung looking for an supporting act in MD for this Sat
by Lanning is Killdozer on Mon Sep 17, 2007 5:59 pm
Ok the band that is supporting us just lost its bassist (not dead, just personal reasons). We are playing at Macs The Club in Essex, MD this saturday night. The venue holds about 700 (although I can't guarantee we will fill it). If you are looking for some exposure in MD and can be there Saturday night, please PM me with a link to your myspace so I can check out your band. If you fit the bill we will pick you. Thanks for looking. Oh and you need to be able to fill a 1 hour set.

First thing I done was take the panel with the wings off it... Now it looks like a blacked out 6505 Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Currently pulsing its way through a haggard old Marshall MG412A. I'm borrowing a 1960a for a few weeks, then I'm buying a Basson B412SL. I figured this would exist to keep me satisfied til I get something high-end, but, without really cranking it in the studio yet, it sounds like a keeper. I'll be using a Boss MT-2, either up front or through the loop, to boost and add even MORE EQ! I'm still looking at noise gates...

Sat on top is a Roland SRQ-4015 4x15 band EQ, through the loop. This is the first time I've properly used this, and it sounds incredible. It's made me decide that I'd like to expand my rack a bit. I've got my eyes on an AKG WMS 40 Wireless, maybe a Sonic Maximiser at some point, and a rackmount Noise Gate. Pro Rack G's are a bit pricey, so maybe a Super C. Maybe a power conditioner, too.

Just wondering. Pair it up with a super strat, some reverb and a touch of delay...one of my favorite lead tones EVA.

New Fedex policy on shipping guitars.
by Brave Dave on Mon Sep 17, 2007 10:41 pm
I sent Mike's jaguar Baby Z today and when I filled in the value at $1000, they said their new policy was not to insure musical instruments over the amount of $100.

"Sure, we'll get it there, but there's NO GUARANTEE WHATSOEVER it will be intact and if it's not, we assume NO RESPONSIBILITY WHATSOEVER.

I am sure it won't be long til the other shippers follow suit.

Want to buy a tube head, need advice
by Serbusfish on Mon Sep 17, 2007 11:36 pm
im in the market for a tube amp, im really sick of solid state tbh, i need something better. the amp im gonna buy needs to be:

- no more than £500
- great for bedroom jamming + gigable
- good for metal (think killswitch engage, lamb of god, machine head kinda tones)

at the moment my eyes are on the Randall RH50T. they are around £400, and from the youtube videos ive seen sound like the head for me. but ive never tried one, and am unable to as there are no Randall dealers around me

but im open to recommendations from experienced tube head uses, can anyone recommend me some decent tube heads that meet my needs mentioned above?

ok,

so i just dropped a deposit for a special order on my first guitar to be more than 1k.

now keep in mind i make like 10 bucks an hour, live in southern california with rent being a bit high in this area of the country. So to me, this was a ton of money.

is it always this nerve racking? i mean im excited, but also in a permanent state of "holy s#%t you just dropped a grand for yourself on your hobby"

so does it get any easier after this purchase? i cant even fathom what you 3k+ dollar purchase guys must go thru, i dont think anyone is rich these days when were all at least spending 2.80 a gallon at the gas pump.

A couple EVO S3 questions:
Am considering getting an Evo Noir S3 in the next few days to replace my Les Paul. Anyone know if the S3 headstock fits into a standard LP hard case, and actually, the overall compatibility with a LP case? I haven't seen it, since the stores up here do not carry them.

What about the weight, as compared to LP (hopefully a bit lighter)?

Trouble with a Roland cube?
by Benthic_Pig on Tue Sep 18, 2007 10:12 am
Hey dudes,

Just wondering if anyone has had any hassles with a Roland cube.

I bought mine and tested it, and it worked fine. 2nd day of owning it, and when i switch it on, all the lights are on, and they wont switch off (so i cant get any sound from it). Tried it in numerous sockets in case something was interfering, but still no luck. Am i being stupid and missing something obvious, or is it just fooked?

Bizarrely, it did this on the first day, but only for a second, then it went on and started working fine. Now it just lights up and i cant do anything with it.

Any suggestions?

Alright, Dr Phil time guys. I got a problem. My best friend thinks he is in my band. He is a hack. Not being a jerk, but he NEVER practices. hes there whenever we jam, which isnt the problem, but he wants to make major decisions as to what music we play and what the band name is and everything else. Half the time he doesnt even show up with a guitar or anything, and expects us to be cool with it. He thought when we picked up another guitarist we were just doin the 3 guitar thing. Were not. I really dont wanna piss him off too bad, cuz he is mah homie, but he is a hack. What should I do?!!? What is the proper band ettiquete?

I've always wondered why guitarists who are dedicated to their instruments, practice night and day, and obsess over chasing the "perfect tone" put up with dudes who flat out cannot sing live. I can't even tell you how many times I've seen incredible guitarists in bands with guys who sloppily sing out of key and can't even finish their lines. Phil with Pantera is a perfect example. He'd either be out of breath or step away from the mic before finishing his lines. To me it's just like someone in the band shitting all over the music.

I went to the Cologne Musicstore ( http://www.musicstore.com ) today and I bought a sea foam green strat body which had "some issues with the finish." Well I have an eye for detail and I couldn't find them. Anyway, I got it for 40 bucks so I wasn't gonna complain. When I got it home I installed a Gotoh vibrato and the pickguard from an early nineties Strat plus and a neck I had lying around, the result looks a lot like Jeff Beck's Green Strat.

Image

But that was not all I bought. I also made myself owner of a Duesenberg "Multibender" tailpiece which I installed on my SG tele hybrid. Now I have the option of doing both B and G bendings. Now I have to take some time learning how to use (That is: not OVERUSE) it.

Best Marshall Amp?
by AXeL9876 on Thu Sep 20, 2007 3:25 am
So I've been looking into getting a good amp

not an amp that you need to be a genius to wire...
not a little crappy amp that has only three adjustment knobs...

I'm really only looking into getting a Marshall,
and that's where the trouble begins...

I need to know which is the best Marshall amp a "budgeted" guitarist can get?

I would like to keep the price around $500 if possible...
I've been thinking about the DSL401...
I usually only play grindcore, heavy metal, and hard rock so I'm looking for a really good stand-alone Marshall amp...
I'm not really interested in a head because:
1) I probably won't have the money to buy it
2) I don't have a cab to hook it up to

so what do you think would be the best Marshall Amp to get?

What is so special about the Plek fret dress?
Besides having measurement and dressing capabilities many times more accurate than the human eye allows, the Plek has two particularly great advantages over manual fretwork. First, it scans and dresses a guitar while it is tuned to pitch. This is a major breakthrough since necks are under 100 or so pounds of string tension and that tension invariably affects the shape of the fret plane, creating curves and humps that change when the strings are removed for dressing. The Plek identifies precisely what needs to be done for perfect results when restrung whereas even an expert human, dressing the neck with the tension released, has to guess about how to compensate for the effect of string tension. Secondly, the Plek applies very sophisticated formulas for optimum neck curve or relief, and adjusts the calculations for the actual string height and each string gauge, something that is different for each guitar and actually different within one guitar as you go from the treble side to the bass.In other words, the fret surface under the high e is treated differently than under the low E. Achieving these same results by hand would be lucky and extremely rare at best.

by Serbusfish on Fri Sep 21, 2007 3:24 pm
im cab hunting and want a 4x12 cab loaded with celestion 30's that wont break my bank. anyone know of such a cab? was gonna get a cheap randall G3 cab for £279.99 and swap out the jaguars for celestions, would cost me £449.99 all together to do this, would this be a good idea?
Hmm
by Ancients3xritual on Fri Sep 21, 2007 8:32 pm
Well i tried out the rm100 from randall, really liked it,but still wondering if i should go with the v2,or perhaps go with an engl or laney, seeing as how ive especially heard good things about the engl,by any chance does anyone have any youtube videos with an engl? I just want to see if the distortion is more br00tal than the randall is,oh and if anyone has a v2 and wants to give me input about it that would be greatly appreciated!

epipone vs gibson les pauls? (obvious NDC)
by Serbusfish on Sat Sep 22, 2007 12:14 am
can anyone tell me the difference between an epiphone les paul and a gibson les paul? are the epiphone versions really bad or something? i cant understand why i could get an epiphone for £300 and a gibson for over £1500, is it just because the gibsons are usa made or something?

I ran into this on ebay. THe seller replied to me that whoever had the guitar before him painted the Gibson logo on the headstock. Looks like a pretty good replica if its not really a gibson. The amp is a kick ass one. I have one here at the house. Awesome little amp. Has more gain than a RG100ES. This could be a good deal for someone.

New guitar day! (NDC)
by Lon on Sat Sep 22, 2007 12:18 pm
Pics later today. I picked up an absolutely dead mint Fender Deluxe Series Showmaster HH Goldtop yesterday. The original owner bought it new and said he played it a handful of times over the last 4-5 years. One of those guys with too many guitars and not enough time. Sold it to me for a stupid low price as well, so low I can't even say! Twisted Evil I originally planned to flip it as usual but I've decided to keep this one. I played it through headphones this morning for about an hour and was just blown away. Setneck, 24 jumbo frets, thin fully bound neck, bound body. It's got a 5 way switch that gives me the normal positions, but the 2 position gives me the front 2 coils of the buckers and the 4 position gives me the rear 2 coils. Very cool. The flame and quilt tops are aout there but the gold tops are pretty rare. Not sure why. More pics later.

Is there a way to stop the whammy pedal killing your tone?
by Flames on Sun Sep 23, 2007 1:08 am
Hey like many other users of the forum I have a whammy pedal and love it. Theres only one real reason I don't include it when I write songs and thats because it severely kills tone for 10-15 seconds after you turn the effect off. Does anyone know a way in which I can stop it killing my tone because every artist I've seen using one live has had great tone exactly after they turned the effect off.

Peavey Valveking questions
by Hot Sauce on Sun Sep 23, 2007 7:32 am
Few ignoramus questions for the Valvekingers out there (referring to the 212 combo):

1. I play all types of music (blues, jazz, classic rock, metal, etc.) What OD should I throw in front to give it the extra oomph needed for metal?

2. Does it cooperate well with effects pedals? (phasers, flangers, chorus, etc.) My Kustom doesn't really take much of a liking to pedals

3. DON'T YOU JUST FREAKING LOVE THIS AMP? My gosh...I played it at the music store today. I never thought i'd like it as much as I did. I played with it for at least 30 minutes.

New Amp Suggestions.............?
by scorpion_bsk on Sun Sep 23, 2007 9:02 pm
Well, I just sold my Marshall JCM 2000 DSL100 stack. Now I am looking for a new amp. I liked the Marshall but the sound that I am looking for I just could not find in the Marshall. I am thinking about looking at the Mesa Road Kings and the Dual Rectifier, Peavey XXX and 6505+ and the Marshall JCM 800 Kerry King. I have been playing for close to 24 years and I have always been a Marshall guy but I am getting these damn tones in my head that I just couldn't squeeze out of my Marshall. I am seriously thinking the Mesa Road King but I don't know, I've never played through a Mesa. I have never tried any of Peavey's high end amps just because I played through a few of their ss amps and I found them noisy and crappy sounding but I hear lots of great talk about the XXX, 5150 II and the 6505+. So anyway, I'm interested in what others have to suggest.......... I really want an amp that has maximum gain without becoming lifeless and muddy, it has to be tight and focused sounding. I'm hoping to make this my last amp purchase so I want the right amp. Thanx........

GIBSON custom shop PRON!!!!!
by zao on Mon Sep 24, 2007 12:27 am
I Traded the jackson kelly i had and some cash for a custom shop zakk wylde limited edition gibson v. i had been wanting this guitar for a while and the guys at the music zoo in ny. hooked me up. so i drove 8 hrs roundtrip and picked it up. i think gibson is gonna make 200 of these and mine is #91.

it really has a great feel to it, it feel like a quility instrument and it sounds awsome, the neck is about the same thickness as my zakk les paul.
this guitar sounds huge and has BALL'S.
its really clear sounding and resonate, its a mahogany body with emg 81 in the bridge and 85 in the neck, its not too often you see a gibson with a floyd.
So I was in Pittsburgh...
by Abomination on Mon Sep 24, 2007 12:36 am
visitng family and watching the Pitt game at Heinz Field, and I was wearing a Pantera shirt. some guy working at the Steel Pitt (the grill in the stadium) called me over and told me that If I want a sweet guitar, to get one of Dime's.

This got me thinking that I really want a Dean, or some kind of V, and I'll probably get it around June when I graduate.
I like ML's, but I like V's more.

Basically, I'm looking for a good V guitar, pickups don't really matter to me, cuz if I don't like it, I'll spend the extra $200 and switch em out. I'm looking for something in the range of $800-1300 NEW before the possible pickup switch. I'm not really a fan of buying used gear.

I like the Razorback 255 V's, as well as the more traditional Dean Vs, the Jackson RR24 and RR5 and Kevin Bond RR, and the Moser V's, and even the *GASP* Ibanez Xiphos (I know its not a V, but I have a soft spot for BC Rich Stealthish guitars). I know, Dean forums, so everyones gonna go for Deans, but I figure wtf, I'll ask anyway.

I was wondering, which of these would be the best for the money? any other suggestions?

Thanks guys.

I was actually amazed, i also got a bag with the allen keys inside, so i don't have to go digging for the perfect size anymore. i also got the strings i wanted, i'll string it up later, and my original Floyd arm, that I'll be sticking on there. Wink

As for the guitar, Its a Jackson RR3. this thing plays like a dream, there are a couple things i will have to get used to, but its a really nice guitar to play. it does need some setting up though, so i'll get to that later. the un-painted neck if a new for me, but its very smooth, and easy to play on. I believe it has jumbo frets, and my fat fingers just have to get squeezed onto. Laughing the pickups are amazing also, both made by Seymour Duncan. the neck pup, a Jazz, is great for power chords, and gives a nice punch to the tone. the bridge pup, a JB, is great for solos, and squeels.

all in all, a very nice guitar to play, and to own.

Decent reverb pedal?
by Hot Sauce on Tue Sep 25, 2007 4:07 am
I've been looking for a decent reverb pedal, but it seems that there aren't very many out there. Confused

I really hate to spend over 150 bucks for an effect pedal (especially on one that only does one thing.)

So far i've looked at the Rocktron Cyborg Reverb, Boss Digital Reverb, and Danelectro Spring King (which i've heard good things about.)

Help.
