LoG (-) mark/wille (+) punz = fun waste of time!
by pUNz on Tue Jan 01, 2008 9:49 pm
i pickd up the sacrament producers edition awhile ago, waiting for a rainy day to %$#@! with it. so while its not rainning, i am a bit sick and decided 'perfect time!' to dive in.

for those who dont know, they re-released their latest with a 'producers edition' cd with breaks the album down into songs, and then the songs down into individual tracks.

for instance, the song redneck was broken down into these tracks:

lead vocals, group vocals, R guitar, L guitar, lead guitar, FX (keyboard and ambient stuff) bass and drums.

you can re-mix them, cut them up in your app, what ever you want. i just like to waste time with a smile on my face, so heres what i did:

http://members.cox.net/punz/redneckpunz.mp3

its the drum, bass and lead vocal tracks from the CD, and one take, one track with me on guitar.

this one was a bit harder.... its still one track, but i think it was about 20 takes till i got one i was ok with (im not one for punching in and all that. i tend to like to nail it in a single take, no matter how long it takes me).

http://members.cox.net/punzlog/risepunz.mp3

the only complaint i have is that they are in mp3 format, with my recording app doesnt recognize. so i have to convert the fies i want to use to .wav. it also woulda been helpfull had the put in a text file for each song with info like: tempo and song length, ect.

anyways, its fun. and thats generally what im all about.

Putting new strings on my guitar.
by CFH_SDMF on Wed Jan 02, 2008 2:04 am
When i put strings on my guitar should i clip the ball end off and put that end in the floyd, or can i just do it backwards and have the ball end at the headstock? Ive heard alot of people say that you have to clip the ball end off and some say it doesnt matter.

I'm a new member here and i wanted to say a few things and ask a question..

First off I'm very pleased and impressed with the level of respect and courtesy you all have for each other. I'm a member of another guitar forum and a few other forums and there is always a group of people who find it abolutely necessary to make themselves look like complete a$$holes by starting as much drama as possible. But this place is different. A welcome surprise. No one seems to attack someones intelligence when they are wrong. Instead, everyone explains their mistake with dignity and cooth. Bravo.

Well, I decided to join because I just recieved a new Dean for my birthday. Best girlfriend in the world bought me a Dean Shadow for my 26th. Go me.

Here's my question. I play hard rock/metal and I'm looking for a new head. I'm currently running a Kustom and i'm not pleased. It doesn't have an effects loop, or a line out control, and i cant use any stomp boxes because it redlines the board everytime. I would like to go tube. I would like 100W, and i really don't want it packed full of effects. just one channel cause i'm going to use all stomp boxes for everything. reverb, chorus, flanger, phaser, wah, and distortion. What is the best buy out there? new or used. the line out control and the effects loop are probably the number one priority.

thank you for your time in advance.

"After two successful years, I have decided to leave ESP guitars. This was a business decision and had nothing to do with the guitars or the manufacturing of the guitars, and I wish the staff of ESP, both in the USA and in Japan and Korea the very best of health and prosperity. Meanwhile, I am taking my Classic Metal V known formerly as a Jackson King V1 or an ESP DV8, and my new guitar design presently known as an Axxion, which was the recipient of the Gold Award from Guitar World Magazine for 2005 for new guitar designs with me. I will also be re-introducing through my new endorsement many special models, including re-issues of my old models from over the span of my career, as well as some retro V shapes, similar to the formerly known Jackson Y2KV or a Gibson Flying V. I will make my announcement and be attending the 2007 NAMM show to meet Megadeth fans and all metal fans, musicians of all styles-especially guitarists."

New ML with shielding pron!
by formula73 on Wed Jan 02, 2008 8:13 am
Should this be in the New Deans section? Tech Discussion? Whatever. I'll put it in neither! Well, here is Randy's old Brave Dave's old 03 TCML. Laughing I bought it with no pickups since I'm not much of an EMG fan and I had plenty of weirdo pickups just laying around to try, so I got it, let it warm up in the house, took it out, and got to shielding. I've had these rolls of stuff from Stewmac for a couple years and have never used it aside from shielding cavity covers on guitars that that cavities painted in that graphite stuff from the factory. Any advice on the subject would be appreciated. Also, these pics kinda suck since it's dark outside, but I figured you all might also want to see the wicked sweet slow-cooker I bought Nicole for Christmas Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

I connected all the different strips of shielding with that solder wick since I wasn't sure they'd actually contact each other through the adhesive, and used it to make sure it would contact the stuff on the covers for continuity.

Keep in mind that this was my first attempt at shielding entire cavities and I just used Stewmac copper shielding tape and Radio Shack solder and wick so pretty much anybody ought to be able to do at least this well. I probably should have done the pickup and jack cavities as well, but it didn't occur to me until it was already all done and strung up. Honestly, I don't notice much difference between this and the unshielded Flame ML, but I also have nothing on when I play except a light and my power goes through a conditioner. Next time I play somewhere, I'll A/B this and the Flame and see if it actually makes a difference. Don't get your hopes up; it might be a while.

Oh yeah: I forgot to give a big thank-you to whoever stripped the shit out of the cover screws(probably Randy Laughing ). That was craptastic!

Other than that, it's a killer guitar. I ended up putting a Duncan Distortion/Dimarzio (unidentified Question ) combo in there and it sounds great for my livingroom noodling self. I guess my flirtation with low-output pickups was only temporary. I like the profile of the neck-between the fatass V of my DFH and the almost-too-slim V of the RB proto, and it's nice and beefy at around 10 lbs. Compared to the Flame ML, it's not quite as loud acoustically, but the neck feels slick as owl shit, and the string tension seems a little lower for the same string gauge/tuning. Maybe it's the series III hs? Whatever. I dig it. I'm sure it'll fit my new embryonic shitty cover band well!Very Happy

Tone controls are for wussies. Laughing Wink

Cab for my new amp
by Inf3rno on Thu Jan 03, 2008 1:54 am
Sup guys, I just got a 6505 head and Im looking for a good 4x12 cab to match it with. I was gonna get a Vader cab but the setbacks to that is A) Its gonna take a month to receive and B) The cabs are so damn loud (480 watts) that I would have to crank it to earsplitting volumes in order to get speaker breakup. Im interested in a VHT Deliverance but my maximum budget is about $650-700. Any suggestions on some good, reliable cabs that would go well with the 6505? Should I bother waiting for the Vader? Thanks

MY TCMLF wishlist...
by Trashed on Thu Jan 03, 2008 7:55 pm
So I finally got round to getting my deposit in for a brand new TCMLF from Steve...
He fired a couple of questions and I thought I'd run them by here just for a couple of opinions.
Here's the specs:
Green Flame maple top (Dark green I hope)
Single ply bound HS
Original Floyd
Abalone Blocks
Abalone Logo
Black hardware.

The rest is stock... which is of course excellent it being a TCMLF...
Anyway Steve sent a couple of questions my way and I thought you guys wouldn't mind helping.
The first is to get a Matching HS or Black one?
the second is the pups... which I can chew on for at least a while...
So whadda ya think?
soundcards?
by New Breed on Thu Jan 03, 2008 9:51 pm
can anyone recommend a computer soundcard for music recording? basically i just need something that will sort out the latency issue for my midi keyboard and my microcube, mic etc. preferably a external usb card. im not looking for an all singing all dancing one, just a fairly cheap one which will sort out the real time latency problem. im not sure if an audio interface or an actual soundcard is the best way to go. the midi keyboard is USB based and doesnt have a proper midi link if that helps the decision at all?

Cheers.
Used guitar strings... On CL

http://detroit.craigslist.org/msg/527331925.html

I figure if a lot of these people on here can charge 4 or 5 times what the actual product cost then so can I. I have some used strings for electric guitar. They are .010 and .011 ga. Some of them have been cut to allow easier removal when i changed strings. They consist of many brands including GHS, Ernie Ball, D'Adario Fender, Gibson, etc. If they are not sold in the next 5 minutes, I am putting them back into the garbage!!!!

I don't buy new strings for $25, why would I buy used strings for $25? Why would anyone buy used strings, actually

Fret Buzz Or Not... I need help!
by Vulgar_Display_Of_Power on Fri Jan 04, 2008 10:26 am
Ok long story but I really need advice!

I got my ESP KH2 NTB back from my guitar tech he has been a guitar luthier for 8 years and he knows his stuff but...

He did a full set up, everything is good except, I thought that there was a lot of fret buzz I took it back to him and played it he said that it wasnt fret buzz but a choking sound.

He said thats how it is but I just can't get past the sound, it just makes me not like the guitar. He said that fret buzz is when the note does not sound and you get a buzz instead, not what Im getting which is to me buzz but you can still hear the note aswell.

Now my epiphone doesnt have this problem but the action on that is really high. I like the action on my esp he said that the action is like a fender action if that helps explain it.

But back to the point is there anyway I can fix this annoying buzzing sound without raising the action extremely high or playing extremely soft.

I need big HELP!!!

by Mingeeta on Fri Jan 04, 2008 5:31 pm
I know there's a guy in this forum with this guitar and I'm jeaaaaaalous.

Finally decided that I want this over the Ibanez's I've been after, purely because of the fact that I really don't wanna have to go through the hassle of buying and changing new pickups.

My one main problem is that the only dealer of Schecters in the UK is Soundcontrol. I'm gonna give 'em a call tomorrow to see if they can get this guitar for me and ask about the price etc.

I was thinking of buying it from music123 or guitar centre online, BUT they don't ship to the UK for some reason. Well I think that's what I read. Crying or Very sad

If Soundcontrol can't get this guitar for me (Or it's overpriced) then I don't know what I'm gonna do.

It's available on ebay for 340 squid but it's second hand, plus 100 dollar shipping and all that customs bollocks.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreeeeeeciated.

How would this guitar compare to the Dime O Flame I've already got, playing wise? I plan to replace the pickups with Duncans (phat cat in the neck for blues, JB in the bridge for metal), so out of the box tone isn't too much of an issue. How does neck through compare to the set neck on the DOF?

Changing Strap Button Location (bass)
by -JiMi DRiX- on Sat Jan 05, 2008 5:24 am
So I have a little problem.. I have a Schecter Scorpion Bass, like this one
Image

It is a 35" neck, instead of the normal 34", and it is a little neck heavy, it likes to kinda dive when I'm just standing there, its lame.
If you can tell by the picture, the strap button by the neck is located right on the point of the body. I was thinking about moving the button lower, kind of like where it is on the ML's, right behind the neck. But I dont know if that is a proper/good place to move it.

Any suggestions??

I also have another problem, I'm trying to get it setup perfect, like my new/other bass. I have the action pretty low up at the 1st fret, but as you go further down, its a little high for my liking. I can not lower it anymore at the bridge or it starts to fret buzz. So how should I go about getting the rest of the neck's action lower, without causing it to buzz like crazy up at the 1st fret where it is already pretty damn low?

...::: Amp help wanted :::...
by ::: Chan Man ::: on Sat Jan 05, 2008 3:45 pm
I want to buy an amp but I really can't decide what I should get.

Things I want in an amp:

- Well, I'm looking for a half-stack.
- Want the sound that Dimebag or Trivium get.

and thats about it guys. I'm going to invest some money in a good amp which is built to last and just stands out (the standing out part is not really necessary).

I'm doing my own research too, but it would be great if you guys can help me out.

Suggestions for easy strumming songs??
by funkify on Sat Jan 05, 2008 3:57 pm
So it looks like I'll have a standing gig lined up... as an acoustic guitar teacher, lol. Still have to get the details ironed out but all indications are that it's going to happen. I just moved to a new town full of music stores but desperately in need of guitar teachers, so I started making contacts and one particular store that sells pianos and acoustics wants to offer classes and just needed to find the right teacher. Enter funkify. Heheh... Except when I suggested that I do both electric and acoustic classes they were not keen on that idea... saying that tattoos, piercings, riffage, and the like is not the image they want to portray. I'm a clean cut fellow but I can get catastrophic on the riffage. They don't know that, though... so acoustic it is for now... anyway...

At least one of my classes will be with total beginners. As my main playing styles do not usually involve strumming cowboy chords or learning strumming songs, I wanted to ask for opinions on easy popular songs for acoustic strumming I might be able to incorporate into my classes. I especially need help finding one or two country songs, as I have nearly zero familiarity with country music. But please don't limit suggestions to country, I just need to find songs that are easy with mass appeal.

So far I have thought of "Every Rose Has its Thorn" by Poison and "Redemption Song" by Bob Marley. I can't wait until I have a class full of noobs strumming Poison then I can suddenly unleash a mad jhair metal solo, hehehehhe. Twisted Evil

I'll also be doing a fingerstyle/fingerpicking workshop, suggestions for songs for that are also welcome. Silent Lucidity and Blackbird will be on the menu for that one.
Showing people who don't play guitar or listen to metal ...
by Benthic_Pig on Sat Jan 05, 2008 5:42 pm
...that you can actually play...

I find everyone looks less impressed if they ask for a song on guitar if you rip out a perfect version of walk than if you were to play something like jungle bells. I know its mainly because people dont recognise songs a lot of the time - i seem to get a better reaction just ripping out some generic blues than if i nail some Dime uber rippage.

Just wondered if anyone had any tunes that they play to impress the non techie/metal fans.

It's mainly beacuse i could do with learning some jingles on guitar and i wondered what everyone else does in these situations (you know what i mean, its like when your gran asks you to play guitar - she'll be nice, but you'd rather play something she recognises...)

Went to guitar center and traded my almost new Boss PS-5 Super Shifter for a Wylde Wah and store credit. Best trade ever.

The PS-5 is really crappy. It's like a whammy and harmonizer in one. The whammy feature sucks. Unlike say a Digitech Whammy, with he PS-5 it was effect on, effect off. You could control the rate that it would raise/lower the pitch, but then once you let up it just shot back to normal, it didn't gradually come back up/down. Great. Then it had a detune setting, but that just didn't sound the same as tuning the guitar to the desired tune itself. As for the harmonizer feature, I really didn't care for it.

The Wylde Wah on the other hand is amazing. It has a nice range, not too short, not too long. Gives you a real nice tone, and even just looks cool. And lets say for some crazy as hell reason you want your pinch harmonics to sound JUST LIKE ZAKKS, turn it on then keep it lower to the bottom and they sound like his. Laughing Now I can play the intro to descending too. Twisted Evil

Anyway, awesome purchase. Don't get a PS-5, but by all means get a Wylde Wah.

Red harvest?
by Pete on Sun Jan 06, 2008 8:14 am
So ya i went to a CD store called Music World, and since its closing in Canada, it was 60% off all metal CDs.

There was something like 40 cds left, and me and my friend went like "hey lets pick CDs that the cover look good"

So i ended up buying 4 CDs. 1 of them is the newer album of Red Harvest, A Greater Darkness.

At first i was like ya its good, but after a good listen, WOW. The atmosphere to the songs are so dark and mean. And the Industrial tracks are cool to listen to.

Anyway, anyone love them or saw them live?

FDB tribute ML vs. ml79f nut size

or even ML select F. not that i can find one of those anymore...or maybe i can get lucky

but are the nut sizes, and everything similar? obviously the ml79f doenst have the pickups.

but i think if i were to get a guitar, i rather get the ml79 simply coz i just like some other peoples names on my guitars. why...god knows. plus, the ml79 looks more 'vintage'

thanks

EDIT: weird thing is, i'm from toronot. and i've been to pretty much every store out there. i've run into a few dean V 79s, but NEVER a dean ml 79 or any z 79s. but the same stores have other guitars like the razorback rust, the USA Schenker Brothers V(the engraved wood looks awesome!) and all sorts of other really expensive guitars, but not an inexpensive ml79...

I was at a club recently (not gonna say where or who) and I overheard a couple members of a band talking about the band that was currently performing. They were saying: "these guys really suck... look! He's not playing it right ect..."

I believe that ANYBODY. who claim themselves to be a musician, should NEVER put down ANY musician for their playing skills. You may not like the genre, or the message but keep it to you Fing self. If you are a true musician, you RESPECT others like you, for you SHOULD know what they are going through.

Besides, the guys that supposedly "sucked" we better than the guys (the S H I T talkers) that later went on. I made sure I told them so.

question about removing pickups
by soliloquy on Mon Jan 07, 2008 3:26 pm
ive seen couple of you guys removing your pickups as soon as you get a new guitar. take pictures of the cavity, see if its a long tenon or not, and then put everything back.

i know some people complain about their pickups sinking into their guitars. so if you pull it out, would you have to readjust the hight of your pickup, or you just slap on the screws, and everything would be back to normal?

buzzing with G string
by Serbusfish on Mon Jan 07, 2008 9:36 pm
I must not know how to set a guitar up or something, because im getting a buzzing coming from the G string on my new razorback. it came with 9 - 42 strings tuned to standard, and it sounded fine, no buzz at all. i have replaced the strings for 10 - 52's and tuned it to C standard. i adjusted the truss rod and raised the bridge slightly. now the G string has started buzzing. none of the other strings do it, its only the G. this happened on my 79 ML but i managed to fix it by raising the action, this didnt work on the razorback, its still there. it sounds like fret buzz, but I cant see any frets touching the string, and i cant really raise the action much more because it will be too high. Does anyone know a way I can find out the cause of the buzzing and fix it? its the one flaw in an otherwise brilliant guitar and its really pissing me off

For a BC Rich Jr. V!

I played one at GC yesterday, and I have to say, I'm pretty impressed with its quality. Only I'm not sure on the exact model, it had EMG's, an OFR, and a mother of pearl pinstripe around the body of it. But It was really nice.

I still want a 255 Razor first. But It wasn't bad, and for alot less money than a 255, it had an OFR.... Confused

I think BC Rich are probably my favorite guitars after deans and they have the sexiest looking V's. Although I haven't played many ESP's to make an opinion on them

Dean Vendetta XM Electric Guitar Review

Some guitars have a dual purpose in their useful lives. The Dean Vendetta XM guitar is just such a wonder. Some folks need an inexpensive guitar to get them started - not everyone can afford a $2200 Les Paul Standard or a $1300 Fender Deluxe Stratocaster. Some folks need a decent instrument as a base (donor) for some seriously fun modifications - without having to spend $600 on aftermarket parts to put together a donor instrument for one's ideas.

Low-cost guitars tend to fall into one of three categories: cheap, and built to play that way; inexpensive, but not a hit in any area (GREAT specs but poor execution); and inexpensive - but more value than the dollars spent. The Dean Vendetta falls into the third category. As with all low-end/beginner guitars, there are obvious places in the Vendetta XM where money has been saved. Still, the build quality is fine, and the features are actually wonderful.

I specifically went out looking for a Stratocaster-shaped guitar for a mini-humbucker project I had in mind. I didn't want an actual Strat (or Strat clone) this time: I was looking for double cutaway, light weight, and an interesting neck. The Dean Vendetta XM went on sale at my local Guitar Center (and is on sale at Musician's Friend) - perfect timing. I had some proceeds from a guitar sale at Christmas time - and the Vendetta XM came home with me post-haste. It has been the perfect donor guitar for the creation of an AWESOME double mini-humbucker project with a 5-way rotary selector. With some nice USA-made parts, high-end import parts, mods, and a little time, it turned out to be an absolute gas!

Let's talk about the factory Vendetta XM with which I started, pre-mods.

Quick Opinion: The Dean Vendetta XM is a good beginner's guitar - one well-suited to folks who have not yet begun to grow into their inner guitar-hero-self. As with any beginner's instrument, the Vendetta XM is not comperable to well-made instruments from the United States or Japan. If one doesn't expect high-end guitar-ness in the Vendetta XM's $100 form, one will be OK with the result. No, the Vendetta XM is not an American Standard Stratocaster. No, the Vendetta XM is not a USA-made Dean for the family heirloom closet. The Dean Vendetta XM is a nice-looking, great-playing instrument for beginners. It is lightweight, well-featured, and actually looks different than most beginner guitars.

I think the Dean Vendetta XM is a great guitar for starters - one that can be upgraded to accommodate the growing needs of a burgeoning guitar player. This guitar is particularly good for smaller folks (who still want a full-size guitar), or for those that don't like lots of weight hanging on their guitar strap.

My Dean Vendetta XM was not very well set up when I got it. There were (more than usual for a beginner's instrument) fret buzzes and the strings were set too high for a beginner. The intonation is pretty close for a bargain guitar. However, nearly every inexpensive instrument I have ever played had some setup or adjustment issues when pulled out of its box. On the positive side - my Vendetta XM came with an arrow-straight neck and VERY unusually excellent soldering in the control cavity.

Features: The Dean Vendetta XM's features are very much it's strongest point. The guitar has a string-through design across a Tune-O-Matic-style non-trem bridge - and the sustain and ring of the body definitely shine through. Even the acoustic sound of the Vendetta XM is pretty good. The string-through design makes for great "ring", reasonable low-end frequencies, and an interesting look to boot.

The simple control layout is a plus. One master tone, one master volume, and a three-way toggle switch adorn the Vendetta XM. The toggle selections are: neck humbucker, both humbuckers, and bridge humbucker. The toggle is a little close to the volume knobs (for quick-change switch slapping while playing). An inspection of the inside of the control cavity was surprising: the soldering was excellent, clean, and well-done. The anti-noise shielding black paint, however, was terribly applied (nothing a little copper shielding won't fix).

The body is very lightweight and is a comfort to the shoulder. The guitar is a little neck-heavy because of the light body, but it isn't obnoxious. My suede strap (fuzzy on the shoulder-side) holds my Vendetta XM pretty well in place for long periods. One small sacrifice of the light body: the guitar doesn't have quite as much sonic guts as a heavyweight like an Epiphone Les Paul, PRS SE, or Squier HH Stratocaster. The stock pickups and the light body do make for some relatively warm (but slightly mushy) sounds played through some amplifiers or models. This is an important thing: the guitar is Exremely comfortable; but there is a small price. A beginner would not feel the sonic difference early in her/his experience. But, this can be fixed with good pickups, a decent nut, and some good adjustment.

Overall, the neck is well above par for an inexpensive instrument. It is reminiscent of a nice Jackson or even a wider Epiphone neck. I like the feel and playability of maple on the back. The rosewood of the neck was kind of weird though: the factory had applied excessive "fingerboard black" to the rosewood. My fingers are black every time I play my Vendetta XM. My particular Vendetta has a great, straight neck. It does, however, have a rough feel - the finish had not been polished down/sanded well enough.

The tuners are adequate sealed machine heads that work fine. Strong bending does pull the instrument out of tune - but not any more or less than any other bargain guitar. The tuners are, however, smooth, better-than-average, and look a lot like the Schaller-type tuners on the nicer Squier instruments.

The dual humbuckers are average, and do the job well enough for a beginner instrument. As with any low-cost humbucker instrument, the humbuckers don't sound like BurstBuckers, DiMarzios, or Seymour Duncan SH* pickups. They're exceptionally easy to replace as the beginner becomes more desireous of better sound. Overall, the sound is fine and the quality is better than average.

My Vendetta XM came fitted with nice lightweight D'Addario strings. They were in good condition, were well-selected for the neck and body type. It's a refreshing change to see commercial-grade strings on a basic instrument - most instruments on the market have lowest-bidder strings installed at the factory.

Quality: The quality of my Dean Vendetta XM is a mixed bag. The finish of the body is flawless - even, smooth, consistent, and attractive (no, they're not gloss finished like in most pictures you'll see - they're satin finished). The finish on the neck is in need of work. The neck finish was rough, the frets were a bit unfinished, and the fretboard is just not as nice as it should be. Even the imprint of the serial number is poorly done. The neck finishing seems as if it was done in a big hurry. The nut is a hollow plastic variety - although this is not unusual in this price range, I'd expect more from Dean.

The wiring and electronics are way above average for a $100 instrument. The quality of the electronic components in my Vendetta were average to above average. The switch and pots are not high quality like Switchcraft USA switches/jacks or CTS pots, but they are adequate and will last for a good while. As with most any budget instrument, the electronics will be noisy in a few years.

I have to say this again (because it is VERY unusual): The electronics were very well done. Most high-end instruments I've played have the same level of soldering craftsmanship and wiring-lengths/wrapping. It may have been just my particular instrument, but I suspect that the simplicity of the controls and the large control cavity make for an easy job at the factory.

Playability: The Dean Vendetta XM is a very playable instrument. It is comfortable from a strap and body-fit perspective, and the neck is a good balance for large hands or even some smaller hands. It is smooth and comfortable in almost every respect.

The tuners go out of tune when the instrument is played aggressively, but not much more than any other beginner's instrument I've played. The instrument needs a reasonable set up when it is purchased - if nothing else to set the string height to the player's liking.

Value: The Dean Vendetta XM is a $149 value, usually sold for $110 to $99 street. Overall, it is a bargain. I really like Dean guitars, and I think they are the spice of the guitar store. I did not hesitate at all to purchase my Vendetta XM.

I think Vendetta XM is great for beginners, and mine has definitely made an excellent choice for my modifications!

Wishes: Do a better job with the neck, Dean: please?

NAD/NCD: Bogner content
by Rampage on Tue Jan 08, 2008 5:31 pm
Yesterday I got my cabinet, so I figured today would be a good day for a quick review.

First off, the amplifier is a newer Bogner Shiva with the bright functions and a variable boost. This particular one is EL-34/Non-reverb. The cabinet is a Bogner Oversized 2x12 loaded with Reinhardt R65s (Like a combination of a Celestion G12-65 and G12H-30).

The Shiva of course has a dazzling clean channel and a very rich, organic lead channel. The clean is very Fenderish and the lead channel is a lot like a Marshall 2203. The OS cabinet is very full and woody which is great in conjunction with the Shiva. I am very happy with this amp so far and I am thinking this will last for a while.

I also ordered a Bodenhamer Bloody Murder Overdrive ( http://www.Bodenhamer-electronics.com/ ) and Monsterpiece MK II fuzz ( http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showthread.php?t=1778565 ) to top everything off. Neither are here yet, but I wanted to pick up a high quality boost pedal to get the Shiva more saturation and I also thought the fuzz would be a cool flavor to add to my tone.

And what would a thread like this be without at least a few pictures?

how do you feel about the most recent album, "In the Arms of God"? I really dig the songs, but I don't like the sound of it. The bass and drums are too prominent to me. Kind of ruins the overall sound/vibe of the album. Killer tracks on there though! Discuss...

i got a mail from someone today asking if i would trade it for a vintage crybaby.

i dont even use my own in the first place and it basically sits in its box.
i paid $200 brand new for it.

is it worth it for the trade even though i wont even use it?

or should i just sell it and take the money and use it for something else?

Warmoth V Finished - Pron!!!
by emunder on Wed Jan 09, 2008 8:49 pm
Well I finally got done putting my King V all together. Took about 8 coats of oil on the body before it got a nice satin sheen. The only thing I have left to do is drill the holes for the truss rod cover and the strap locks. I have it mostly setup but I need to dial in the intonation on the Floyd. The guitar plays incredible though with low action and no buzz. I have it tuned to drop C right now and it yields an action of about 3/64" on the high E side and about 5/64" on the low E side from the top of the 8th fret to the bottom of the strings. These Warmoth necks are just amazing and don't require any fret leveling. The oil on the body allows the tone to come through and it has tons of sustain. All in all it wasn't that hard to put together and I can see myself building another one for sure. Pics...

New Guitar Day x2!!! 1 Dean & 1 NDC
by emunder on Wed Jan 09, 2008 9:27 pm
Well I've been posting some pics of my Warmoth but I don't want ya'll to think that I'm not flying the Dean flag anymore so here are a couple of new additions to the family. First one is a Dean VMNT1 in silver to go along with it's Warmoth brother and the other is a Gibson Gothic SG I found at a local store and just couldn't pass up. Being that it's a nice day here in Tejas I figured I'd post some pics. Don't mind the missing tone knobs on the Gibby....I have to go get a couple. The stock knobs wouldn't fit the EMG pots. Also, don't know if any of you have ever tried the Seymour Metal Live Wires but I am really impressed with these pickups. Being actives they are hot but they have more of a passive vibe to them and not as bright as an EMG 81 and smoother gain. Low end still stays tight and they have a very nice mid-range to them. First time I tried them so I didn't know what to expect. Both these guitars have ebony boards and the Mustaine V plays really well.

Guitar-Buying Advisement Required

So, basically I am in a serious need of a metal axe, and I need some suggestions. I know it's a weird question, but I just don't have the time to go around, checking my local guitar shops. My budget is limited to 500 euros (not sure how much it is in other currencies). It's better if it doesn't have a Floyd Rose, since I need drop E to D alot. Preferrably a basic guitar, I'm not too fond of strange looking guitars Wink (no offense)

by Blazer on Thu Jan 10, 2008 10:53 pm

So yesterday I took my screw driver and drill and converted my medium scale Ibanez.

The reason I chose my Ibanez was because it was my cheapest bass and because I knew it would end up looking like one of Doug Pinnick's eight string basses.

Why does my tone suck in C standard?
by Serbusfish on Fri Jan 11, 2008 12:25 pm
My 3 guitars are each tuned differently, I have my DFH tuned to E Standard, my 79 ML tuned to Drop D, and my Razorback to C Standard. The DFH and the 79 ML sound perfect, but the Razorback sounds totally different, it sounds nothing like the other two tone wise, its a bit muddy and generally doesnt sound as good. It sounded good when I had it in E standard, but ive changed the strings for some D'addario 12-54's and tuned it to C standard and it sounds like crap. Could it be the dimebucker thats the problem? Maybe it doesnt like low tunings or something, idk, or maybe my settings need altering for this tuning?
Shredding vs. Songwriting
by rabidchicken on Fri Jan 11, 2008 3:42 pm
so i write all these songs and yet i cant seem for anything to find a place in the middle of a song to have a solo....
is there something wrong with me?
like no matter what i play....
i prefer the solos to be either at the beginning of the song or at the end....
sort of like supplementry standalone material but not intended
to be part of the actual song.
i dont know what my problem is....
i dont feel the songs need solos...
i feel they just take away from the message...
that bothers me because after all its only music in music.
lately as well,
i have been listening to alot of bands and what they do for solos...
in alot of cases and i mean a majority...
i notice that patterns are change and severly alterted just to get in a solo here or there.
what good is that? i constantly ask myself that.

any thoughts or ideas on this?

truss rodd question'
by Adio_stack on Fri Jan 11, 2008 10:16 pm
so at the moment im adjusting the truss rod on my KV. Ive tried adjusting the action first but by the time I raise it enbough to stop buzzing its way too high for my liking.

The buzzing is mainly between frets 1-3 and on the a string the 7th area. I did the test were you put your finger on the 1st fret and the 14th to see how close the string is too the fret and its on top of it (no gap) im im loosning the truss rod to get more relief. I just did my first adjustment and turned it a lil less then a quarter turn cause i don't wanna f*ck it up. how long should i wait to turn it again?

Building a Warmoth Guitar
by xero_uk on Sat Jan 12, 2008 2:32 pm
Hey guys.
I'm looking at building a Warmoth Guitar, and I know some of you have, so I guess I'm just after some info seeing as I've never attempted anything like this before.

I think I wanna go for a Les Paul Double-Cut body with the matching Les Paul Neck/Headstock but I want some kind of trem on there. So I was thinking about a Gotoh Wilkinson Trem.

My main question is: how easy is it to install a tremolo onto a guitar?

and the second question is: Is there anything else I need to know about this before I dive in and start. Anything you think I should know...

I'm semi-worried about trust-rod adjustment too Sad

Thanks people!

Micro Amps
by Anonymous on Sun Jan 13, 2008 2:00 am
I've been looking for a micro/mini amp to have on my desk while I'm at the computer.

Requirements:
Tuner
Reverb (preferably)
Delay
At least 1 clean and 1 distortion modes
AC power is a must
Under $100

I've heard nothing but good things about the Roland Micro Cube, but are there really no competitors? Vox DA5 maybe?

Please give suggestion and/or comments.

Would Dean do a USA custom MAB-1 AF for me?
by immersive on Sun Jan 13, 2008 5:14 am
I really want the MAB-1 AF but am looking for a USA quality guitar with some better stuff. Does Dean take custom orders on guitars like a USA made MAB-1 AF? Or do so many people have to request it? How does that work?

The specs would be same as MAB-1 AF but:
* Original Floyd Rose
* Finishes to choose from similar to the Hardtail finishes instead of only the graphic
* Dean MAB Sig Pickups (to be announced at NAMM)

Thanks for any info!

Painting my ML
by deansman90 on Sun Jan 13, 2008 8:46 am
Hey guys. I'm gonna be finishing up filling the holes on my ML tonight. I have been thinking on doing it up like EVH's White and Black strat, or like a previous idea about taking a drill to the body and just f*cking the whole thing up and then masking like EVH and do it yellow like Dime did.

Also, I have been thinking on just doing the top of it just for a quick job but am also thinking on doing the whole thing.

What you think I should do and what other schemes you think I should take a look at ?

whats up with blue burst deans?
by soliloquy on Sun Jan 13, 2008 3:20 pm
apparently they are 'rare'...yet for a rare guitar, they seem to be seen quite often. and even in the blue burst color, they come in two shades. one, like blue middle, with dark blue exterior. and the other one is light blue middle, dark blue outlines the light blue, and then black outlines the dark blue...

so just wondering, whats the story behind em? what makes em 'rare'? Confused
Old Crybaby Wah
by New Breed on Sun Jan 13, 2008 4:03 pm
ive had a crybaby super pedal hanging around for years, when i bought it i was told it was from the 60's or 70's (i cant remember which) and it says on the bottom it was made in italy by jen electronics. I've havent used it for years and i forgot i even had it because ive been using a 353q dunlop crybaby for a good while now. just wondering if anyone knows anything about these? i.e. how popular they are how much they sell for etc. To be honest it doesnt have a very pronounced a sweep to it, as if its not working fully, im gonna take it to a local electrician friend to see if he can see if any components are on their way out.

Happy for myself.....

My birthday is in about 19 days now (as of 1/13/0Cool

So last night I asked my dad to go to the local guitar shop with me....We were four feet from there it begin with..So we left Stop and Shop and drove over there.

We got inside and he was amazed, I walked right over to the dean ML XP in metallic white (only color there right now) I told him its the one i like....His next question stunned me..

Well, If thats the one you "Like" there has to be one you "Love" which one is it??

So i showed him the warbird...HE ASKED FOR A PRICE ON IT.....NOT FROM ME BUT FROM THE MANAGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now for some thats like ok so what he asked for a price.....but for him to ask, that usually means he wants to buy it.....

So the price $750....then he said how much for the white ML $250....

I sat there shocked for about 10 minutes until his phone rang and it was my mom the microwave at home broke and was beeping and it wouldnt stop she opened the door and was still running....So we left.

We spoke about the guitars on the way home.....First question he asked me in the car was what do u want for your birthday?

I told him nothing too big......He said how bout that guitar?...

I crapped myself right there, i was speechless. I said "REally???" he said maybe..

He never told me which one...i suspecting the XP...but you never know.....

(oh yeah Chevelle, If you read this, sorry i didnt tell you last night while you were over, I was basically shocked)

cant wait for 2/1/08

by Dankfizzle on Mon Jan 14, 2008 5:48 pm
Hey everyone, I really want the MAB-1, it looks like a great guitar. But, im worried that the neck will be to thin. He said himself its super thin. Also ive heard that when necks are thin, pressing on the strings is harder and actually works your muscles more because there isnt as much leverage. So im worried its gunna mess up my hand... Anyone having a coldone jamming??
by bashplanet on Tue Jan 15, 2008 3:36 am
On Monday!!! I am working on my room that will soon be a recording area, I have a few kids I am trying to teach to play music. I decided the best way to show them how they sound ifs to set up a typical music recording scenario. I bought an analog 4 track and a mixer. mics booms, and Cakewalk Sonar and all the trimmings..as soon as it all gets here we will be able to enrich young minds,

The best teacher is being able to hear yourself when you aren't playing... make a CD and take it to your friends..they will be critical as hell...

I think it will be a great teaching aid......

I will add the recordings to either my myspace or make a myspace just for them..I will keep everyone posted
Do you own a guitar and a bass?
by brn14me on Tue Jan 15, 2008 9:25 am
I noticed with a lot of the new guitar and bass pr0n that quite a few low enders are buying guitars and vice versa. What do you own?

I've got a two guitars and two basses but I play my guitar more than anything, have tons of guitar sh*t, and would consider myself a guitarist (albeit not a very good one) rather than a bassist. But I mess around on the bass every now and again cause I enjoy it too.
...::: Dean vs Gibson over Splittail? :::...
by ::: Chan Man ::: on Tue Jan 15, 2008 3:04 pm
Look at what I found while surfing ye old web:

"Zakk Wylde has stated on an interview over at Modern Guitars Magazine that Gibson will be putting out a new guitar model designed by him called Zakk-V or ZV: “They made me the Flying V, so I’ve been jamming on the V a lot. I designed this other one, it’s called a ZV, Zakk-V, it’s a combination of an SG meets a Flying V, which sounds slammin’. They did an awesome job with that, so they’re going to end up putting that one out as well. I’ve just been using, you know, same thing, my Les Pauls and then the Flying V.”
Zakk Wylde turned 40 years old last January. He is the founder of Black Label Society, a band he started in 1998 and that has released 9 albums. He is also the guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne, an association that started in the late 80’s when he was only 20 years old. Check out the rest of the Modern Guitars Magazine interview here."

StRetching Before Playing a Show?
by -JiMi DRiX- on Tue Jan 15, 2008 6:43 pm
Lately our band practices have gotten more like show rehearsals since we are playing our first show as SCORNED EMBRACE on Feb. 8th.

Through all the moving around and stuff, I notice that I lean back on my left leg a lot (keep in mind that im a lefty, so typically thats the right leg for the rest of you) and after we get through half our songs, my leg is weak, and sort of shaky like its going to give out from under me. And the rest of me doesn't feel so well either.
I wanted to know if this is a matter of stretching that needs to be done before, or if my damn leg just lacks some good ol muscle? Laughing Or possibly being dehydrated even? I dont know, but it sucks!!

Bought second hand off a guy who lives not too far from me. He said he had it about 6 months. It looks practically new! There's a small scratch on the back, but that really doesn't bother me as you can barely see it anyway, and it's on the back. It's got one of the cleanest fretboards I've ever seen in my life! Also came with a case.

Equipped with Dimarzio Evolution 7 in bridge, Air Norton 7 in neck.

Songwriting rant
by goop on Tue Jan 15, 2008 11:00 pm
been in the same band for 2 1/2 years of which until recently did not really write much. I would learn my parts, written for me, then maybe write my own leads if needed. I would voice an opinion here or there on new material but out of respect for the person writing I would never force an issue. My reason was this. I look at a song like painting, the artist reveals it, you observe and may say to yourself "I'd do this or that" but you don't go up to it with a brush and start painting over it. If the painting is not done and you're asked for your opinion, you do so, but you don't paint on someones cavas unless you have permission.

Anyway, I finally get some software and start writing and the guys are digging what I'm writing but they want me to give it to them so they can do whatever they want to it. I say, I wrote it, I like it, you like it, let's finish it together so we're all happy. I don't think I should be left in a position that I hate what I wrote because someone flipped it around.

I submitted to them a complete song minus vocals. When they heard it they loved it. Now they're butchering it. What gives? Sorry for the rant. I just hate this. No one else in the band is bringing music to the table, I'm busting my ass trying to write stuff and I think I should have some more say in the matter.
Repost Search Sissy Mary Thread
by Anonymous on Tue Jan 15, 2008 11:23 pm
Wanna to adjust the action on your floyd? Want to know the best was to pack a guitar? get the nut size on your caddy, perhaps get familiar with Dime’s rig? How big of a box can you use for international Express? Ever wonder why people say active electronics sound the same? What colors were available for USA Deans in 1984? Got a vintage question?

How do you GET that information? It seems the popular thing to do is to ask the question again. One problem with that is the your question is read by 14 – 18 year-olds as opposed to a seasoned professional. There’s one critical thing you guys HAVE to realize: This forum is older than all but 25 members or so. (Please forgive me if I am wrong, it might be less I don’t know all the OG’s personally although I have tried.) Unless it’s a modern question about something NEW, it has probably been asked and answered thoroughly by experienced people. If fact, I found that if I search for a certain subject and read up on it, not only is my question answered 99% of the time it provokes another question or detail on the subject and revives and therefore updates the thread.

As the cycle continues, the knowledge base grows. And that’s the key here -

This WAS the greatest forum around, and although it doesn’t have the same level of technical input and Dean lust it used to, it still has the posts – the information (despite a few crashes) is still here. The ONLY way access the info is to SEARCH for it. Yep, Searching is your friend. I have an idea, if you're not having an easy time searching for a subject, ASK! Then a thread of how to use it is created and can then be searched for! One tip - when you START a thread, name it accordingly. Just common sense, really. Is he being a jerk? NO. So many complaints about how the search sucks... content searches are just that, based on content. No search is possible if you are missing a key word.

I bet we can get Pete to enhance criteria for content searches - but that won't happen until we start using the tools we have correctly first. Wink

Go ahead, flame away, I am sure I offended someone - I bet you won't forget the name of this one though you bunch of sissy marys!!!!!!! lol!!! Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

HEAVY METAL:
The warrior arrives on a Harley, kills the dragon, drinks a few beers,
and bones the princess.

POWER METAL:
The warrior arrives riding a white unicorn, escapes from the dragon,
saves the princess and makes love to her in an enchanted forest.

THRASH METAL:
The warrior arrives with a frayed denim jacket, fights the dragon,
saves the princess and fucks her.

VIKING METAL:
The warrior arrives in a ship, kills the dragon with his mighty axe,
skins the dragon and eats it, rapes the princess to death, steals her
belongings, and burns the castle before leaving.

DEATH METAL:
The warrior arrives, kills the dragon, rapes the princess in the mouth
and kills her, then leaves.

BLACK METAL:
The warrior arrives at midnight, kills the dragon and impales it in
front of the castle. Then he sodomizes the princess, drinks her blood
in a ritual before killing her. Then he impales the princess next to
the dragon.

GORE METAL:
The warrior arrives, kills the dragon and spreads his guts in front of
the castle, fucks the princess and kills her. Then he fucks the dead
body, slashes her belly, and eats her guts. Then he fucks the carcass
again, burns the corpse, and fucks it for the last time.

GRIND METAL:
The warrior arrives, screams something completely incoherent for about
30 seconds, and then leaves.

DOOM METAL:
The warrior arrives, sees the size of the dragon, and thinks he could
never beat him. He gets depressed and commits suicide. The dragons
eats his body and the princess as dessert. That's the end of the sad
story.

GOTHIC METAL:
The warrior in a velvet costume starts singing soprano. The
protagonist completes the duet by adding the beast part, while the
dragon plays the flute. Suddenly the dragon swallows the flute and
accidently scorches the beauty and the beast and suffocates to death.
All their souls are damned in hell for all eternity.

PROGRESSIVE METAL:
The warrior arrives with a guitar and plays a solo of 26 minutes. The
dragon kills himself out of boredom. The protagonist arrives at the
princess' bedroom, plays another solo with all the techniques and
tunes he learned in the last year of the conservatory. The princess
escapes looking for the HEAVY METAL protagonist.

INDUSTRIAL METAL:
The warrior arrives wearing a greasy overcoat, makes an obscene
gesture towards the dragon, and gets escorted out of fairy tale land
by security guards.

SPEED METAL:
Suddenly there, short solo, dragon is confused, someone's screaming
weird stuff, princess realizes she's been deflowered, dragon and
princess are still looking for the one who did this.

CHRISTIAN METAL:
The warrior rides in on his way home from church and sings a mushy
power ballad to the dragon about how much Jesus loves him and that the
dragon should turn to Him. The Dragon is immediately converted, and
when the princess wants to "thank" the protagonist he replies, "sorry,
but I don't believe in having grox before marriage".

GLAM METAL:
The warrior arrives, the dragon laughs at the guy's appearance and
lets him enter. He steals the princess' make-up and tries to paint the
castle in a beautiful pink color.

NU METAL:
The warrior arrives in a run down Honda Civic and attempts to fight
the dragon but he burns to death when his moronic baggy clothes catch
fire.

EMO:
The warrior sees the dragon and moans about how hard it will be to get
the princess to fall in love with him. He gets eaten. The princess is
very happy, because he was a whiny fag anyway.

I know it's off topic but this is where I'll get the fastest response. How do you break in stiff leather - I got my leather bracers today and they're not leather coat material. These were stiff and totally flat when I got them. Beside bending them there's nothing I could think of.

Ok after watching an old chuck berry concert last night I came up with the idea for this topic. I know we've had topics about songs for beginners before, but what about a list of what people think are classic songs every guitarist (irrelevent of style) should know.
I thought of these:

Bought Line6 Metal Shop
by Mingeeta on Thu Jan 17, 2008 8:22 pm
I bought this add on for my pod xt live a couple hours ago.
Sounds great, you can get a hell of lot more distortion out of some of these amp models than the onesthat come with the pod. Some sound a lot more realistic too.

I've uploaded a few clips of the models which I thought sounded the best. There's also one tone which i downloaded off the line6 custom section just to show the completely different sound you can get out of one of these amp models with some mods.

Remember, the first 2 are just the amp model on its own, no effects, noise gates etc. I just loaded the amp in and recordedthe clip straight into my computer.

why ebony?
by brn14me on Fri Jan 18, 2008 1:09 am
What's the big draw to ebony fretboards? I'm the farthest thing from a shredder and I have never owned a guitar with an ebony fretboard so I'm a bit confused. I've played guitars with ebony boards and rosewood and honestly I cannot tell that much of a difference, but to so many people on here it seems to be the final straw. So many comments on how Dean won't put ebony boards on imports so they'd rather buy something else.

Does it really make THAT much of a difference?

I just created profile on myspace on which I will be uploading some

I've uploaded one tune for now that I made sometime last year.
I found it back yesterday and did a little touch up in the mix.

I rarely have the chance to get any feedback so any inputs are greatly
appreciated and I welcome constructive criticism but guitar/bass is not my
first instrument so don't flame me Laughing

p.s. The sound quality suffered bad during the conversion to the
myspace player. I recommend downloading the file for better quality.
Interesting find
by twisted on Fri Jan 18, 2008 4:52 am
I was going through the competitions sites to see what they have released for 2008. I already knew Jason Hager (former Chimaira, and Years of Fire guitarist) was in the ESP 08 catalogue. I was a bit surprised to see he was also included in the BC Rich cat as well.
Also representing Cleveland is Years of Fire bass player Ben Hollowell (ESP)and Chimaira guitarist Rob Arnold with his Sig model ESP/LTD.
Seems kind of meaningless to most people I'm sure but it is nice to see Clevelands music scene getting some recognition.

New Lefty RB...Yay or Nay
by The Furious One on Fri Jan 18, 2008 10:34 am
I have to vote Nay.

I give Dean credit for actually doing a lefty RB, but that finish just sucks. Granted, the Razor Back is a metal guitar. No 2 ways around it. It's got more points to it than a pack of needles. I just can't get my head around the fact that they went w/ such a tacky and cliche graphic over a more safe bet finish like a straight color or 2 tone.

I wouldn't piss on one if it really was on fire, play it in public, or let alone pay the price tag they're going to carry.

Sorry Dean, I think you guys really dropped the ball on this one and I hope you're making some more FBD lefty's cuz if this limited run doesn't fly, I'll be leaning towards one of them. If I buy any Dean at all.

DEAN Rant/Disappointment/Praise/Past/Suggestion/Future?
by Anonymous on Fri Jan 18, 2008 11:22 pm
Things Dean needs to do:

Brand pickups on ALL models (even if Dean-pickups).
Graph tech bridges on ALL fixed bridge models.
TonePros, Roller or at least upgraded bridges on ALL fixed bridge models.
Ebony or Maple boards on (at least some if not ALL) imports.
OFR on ALL floyded models.
HSC included on the price tag of ALL models.
Matching headstock's on (at least some if not ALL) models.
24 frets in some shredder-oriented models.
Dean guitar straps.
Dean picks.
Keep some specs or models specific for higher end guitars (e.g. the V-necks, or other distinctive stuff on the USA axes)

These "small" things would put Dean up a notch. These mods SELL guitars. Most of other medium-sized companies are doing it, and are currently beating Dean to the points regarding hardware/specs/price.
BC Rich - OFR's, Ebony on string trough's...
Schecter - all of the above
ESP's LTD - some of the above
Hell, even Michael Kelly is doing so!
etc..

Why not exploit the current and/or discontinued models... Why can't we get a white-gold-V in all black? Why can't we get '79 V's with floyd? Why can't we get an archtop black caddy (or other solid colours for that matter)? Why not revamped Avalanches, Nashvegas, Bel-air's and Sarasotas? Why not P-90 equipped guitars? Why can't we get a Demonator guitar?

All of the above are relatively simple changes to be made. And yes, they WOULD SELL guitars.

Things Dean needs to stop:

Graphic tops... A.K.A. toy-like guitars (ok, for 1 or 2 models, but c'mon!).
Making more Dime models (like and old Portuguese saying: "the cow will eventually run out of milk").
Having endorsees that don't appeal to the masses? I mean, c'mon how many people will buy the Leslie West, Rick Emmett, Vinnie Moore or Tommy Bolin signature guitars? GET SOME GOOD AND RELEVANT artists in the scene at the moment! Get Mastodon, get Lamb of God, get Evil Twin, get Lacuna Coil... get anyone you want but make sure they're artist's that "kids" (notice the use of "") can IDENTIFY themselves with and want to buy guitars because their idols do so.

Dean did one great thing recently, the Soltero. Great design and apparently a quality guitar that can totally become Dean's new (or complementary to the ML) trademark.

Get a hold Dean, step up or you will slide down the drain... use what you already have before thinking of 300 more goofy models/paint schemes or silly changes.

/session of Rant/Disappointment/Praise/Past/Suggestion/Future?

Feel free to flame away... it's how I think and feel at the moment.

EDIT:
People, please don't take this as a whining post. That was not my intention. I couldn't care less for what Dean or any other brand makes with HIS own company.

Some of you are Dean fanboys (and I mean that in a good way) and will buy "anything" Dean makes, some of us are not. I won't.
I'll buy what plays better, feels better, sounds better and has better specs (and yes, looks better also).

I'm not complaining, I really like Dean guitars and I've own a few (although I currently only have 1) so I can say that Dean is THE most customer oriented company with it's custom runs and service and I honestly STILL think they are SOME the most solid, well built and gorgeous guitars around. I just find it strange that on the majority of the guitars, Dean chooses to go for variety of finishes instead of quality improvements.
Someone talked up there about the 81 series, the OFR's... how come a guy like me, that can't afford USA guitars, can't have a factory-upgraded quality import? Mind you, the OFR is just an example, it can be applied to any hardware/specs option for that matter.

(*) Get this (and I'm just giving an example here), see the specs on the Schecter ATX and on the Dean Vendetta 4F. I mean, EVEN if the Schecter's price exceeds the 4F in $200 I think you will get far more bang for the buck (and I mean IF you intend to upgrade it afterwards, I'm not discussing "budget" guitars). And we have to admit, is a Vendetta THAT MUCH BETTER than a Schecter? So why would you pay less for a 4F, to install an OFR or TonePros, graphtech, pups, etc... afterwards (making it the same price or higher) when you can have the same thing, NEW, with no void warranties or installation (Luthiery) issues directly from the factory/dealer?

Now about the signature models/artists comments (and I'm not talking about the ENDORSEMENT of artists, I'm talking about signature GUITARS available for purchase):
Is it more important to sell 1000 of $1k guitars or 20 $3k guitars?
I mean, signatures should sell like bagels...
Trivium, although I'm not a fan, that's fine example of a good endorsement right there. Trivium SELLS guitars and like so, they have signature axes.
Who the hell, besides 10 or 20 rich, ill tasted people, will buy that USA Tommy Bolin? Or the Schenker Bros USA?
Dime, YES, Dean should have Dime models, but come on... that many? Shouldn't a "proper" Dime-fan-guitar-player have 1 or 2 GOOD equipped import guitars instead of the 3543 current models fitted with LFR's and (ugly) graphic top guitars? (and again, I'm not discussing the budget models).

Make signature series of guitars that SELL hundreds of units!

(*) ... And I have to say that I don't know the prices for these models, so this may or may not be a good example.

Oh and BTW, EXCELLENT job on the mahogany series. If these match the general expectations, it's the exact path Dean should take in the future. Now make a "plus" import line.
Makes you think in the future: "should I get this accessible USA and upgrade it (if necessary) while the cash flows in making it as good as any "top of the line" USA, or should I go for that already "top of the line" import?

I need to know how much the Washburn Trendkill guitars go for. I've been looking up and down eBay and around the internet trying to find the real value of these things and I can't find squat. The reason I ask is that I have the opportunity right now to buy one at $350 w/case. It is beat to hell and has these stupid stickers all over it that look like they could come off if I worked at it. It has the floyd rose and EMG 81/85s in it. The biggest reason I ask about the price is that it has the bearded skull and camo on the back of the guitar, too, which I have read somewhere that makes it that much more rare? Or did I read that right? I just have this feeling that this guitar is something special and and I should snatch it up without question, but seriously, what is this thing worth?

Here are the Import Solteros. These things are awesome. MAP is $699. They have nice V-necks. They look really great. Big shocker. Awesome guitars...

Image

Import Leslie West. Also killer V neck. looks and feels great!

Image

Dean put out a couple of Relic guitars. They call them "distressed finishes". I call them schweet !

Relic ML

Image

Relic Soltero.

Image

Ok. Now on to the new USA line. The Mahogony Series is what some people are calling them. They look like a higher end Pro Series. My understanding is that these are early versions, and the later production models should be more refined and better than these. It is definately a step in the right direction... but I think Dean needs a bit more time with these. Street price should be around $1300 for a made in USA Dean. This is very encouraging, and should lead to great things for Dean in the near future!

Image

Image

Image

There were some very sweet exotic imports at the Dean booth today. I do not know if these are the same ones Carlino had, but they are super sweet. Take a look at these. Yes.. imports. Very low MAP $.

Image

Here is the production run Slime. I dont think it is the same as the custom run. Werent those V-necks? This one is not... its a soft C. And the color is not quite the same as the limited run either. But it is a nice guitar.

Image

Here is the Lizard Skin Stealth. This guitar is sick looking in person!

Image

Here is the black/silver Stealth. nice as well.

Image

Here is the new Trans Red Caddy Bass. This thing is really nice... I think MAP was around $399 if I am not mistaken. So once again, a neat new bass that is NOT black. lol...

Image

here is the display of Dean USA Pickups... I will be finding out more about these suckers tomorrow...

Image

This is a Tommy Bolin memorial tribute guitar. There was lots of related memorabilia in the display too. Pretty cool. Maple board!

Image

A Close up of the double neck body...

Image

Now for some surpises from Luna... These guitars are really sweet. Figured tops, V-neck carves, sweet hardware specs... inexpensive price. Yes .. I did just say V-necks!

Image

These Luna Basses are about $500 I think. They are incredibly nice. and have V-necks!!!!

Image

And last, but not least... some Dean girls!

Image

So this is just part one of my NAMM pron posts... I have a ton of pics of the artists in the booth, and lots of NDC pron too. I will take loads more pictures tomorrow. I hope you enjoyed it...

How come this only costs $899 when a 255V will cost $1199 yet lacks some specs?

Maybe its because B.C Rich sells more guitar therefore can lower its selling price?

I'd like to know.

LOVE HER OR HATE HER. SHES NOT MY TYPE OF CHIC BUT I THINK SHE IS DOING A VERY GOOD JOB. THE ASIAN GIRL LAST YEAR WAS MORE MY THING BUT SHE DIDNT KNOW ANY OF THE PEOPLE (PROBABLY A MADONNA FAN) AND DIDNT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE GEAR OR COMPANY. LACEY AT LEAST KNOWS THE STARS AND KNOW ABOUT GUITAR. IT IS NICE TO SEE SOMEONE ACTUALLY BE PROFESSIONAL. I WAS APPREHENSIVE AT FIRST WHEN I HEARD SHE WOULD BE THE INTERVIEW PERSON AT NAMM BUT SHE REALLY HAS DONE A GOOD JOB. JUST PUTTING THAT OUT THERE.

"new" dean headstocks?
by soliloquy on Sat Jan 19, 2008 6:39 pm
it may just be me, but do those up-side down V headstocks look smaller than previous years? like, take a look at whats on the Split-tails, or the Caddy's. they look more narrow, and almost look like they are aligned with the nut. kinda like what PRS does with their machine heads. like they are perfectly aligned with the nut. the new headstocks that dean is making look almost perfectly aligned with teh nut...

so is it just me, or they actually are smaller?

i have no clue if these are good/bad
could someone fill me in Smile

and by the way on the dean website its wrong --> it says the new solteros have the leslie west pickup but on the catalog it says dean vintage style. Im assuming the catalog is right but if someone knows more than me please let me know

It's getting old.
by minimimaniac on Sun Jan 20, 2008 12:20 am
Will you guys seriously stop moaning and Flappyfleep and crying and dicking around? So many threads saying you want this and that and this and that. Its getting old. Dean has done a bloody good job this year putting out all these kick-arse models that we've been asking for for ages. All you can do is bitch and moan about how much you want Graphtec nuts and OFR's? These people pull out all the stops to get you guys what you want with the production models and LTD runs which are within reason and you still piss and moan?

Why don't you just dig deep and get some balls and say "Thank you" because it seems like too many of you are just plain unappreciative. If you don't like something, fine, thats your opinion, but will you use a little common sense? This is their forum, not ours, were just here because they let us in.

I'll take this chance to say thanks to all the people down at Dean for all the hard work they put in to make these guitars, because they DO rock HARD. If you don't like them because the hardware is the wrong colour, well sorry mate, your issue. Rolling Eyes

Beer + Spray paint = CAMO V !!!
by goop on Sun Jan 20, 2008 2:53 am
I was bored so I messed around with a warmoth V body I had and a Warmoth Reverse Jackson neck. The camo looks week cuz I'm still putting the layers down. I just mocked it up to get a feel. I think black hardware would look better but chrome is what I had. I made a cover for the toggle switch to replace the black. It's made from a fake bullet (last pic).

NAMM 2008 - Saturday Dean Pron
by BradWorld on Sun Jan 20, 2008 4:36 am
Saturday was a great day at NAMM. Lots of cool people. Lots of neat gear. Cant beat it...

I am goint to start with some more detail on the import Solteros. I am still quite stunned by the quality of these imports. V neck. Full size maple cap, with the huge natural maple binding... just like the USA and MIJ Solteros. I spend some quality time with these MIK Solteros. They are most excellent.

Image

Yes... this is an Import! Check out this binding:

Image

Import Splittails. Yes they have V necks! and they do feel very good. one with the floyd; one hard tail...

Image

Now for the obligatory Dime related content...

Dime's guitars were on display:

Image

The Most Awesome Dime Stealth Lizard... V-neck. Sweet graphics... I am not usually a fan of most Dime related guitars, but this one is really nice...

There was also a request for a pic of the Diamond Plate RB as well:

NAMM vs. DOA
by ML Tib on Sun Jan 20, 2008 5:02 pm
Yesterday was my first visit NAMM. In 2005 I attended DOA 4. In all means, some of you guys need to get some legitimate complaints, when it comes to Dean guitars. Prices first. If you don't like the price buy the POS BC Rich, Fender, Ephiphone, Jackson..etc etc..

Here is my take.. First NAMM

Cost me $12 to park.... Food in the damn place was expensive. Cost me $10.50 for Philly Cheese steak, Fries, and a 32oz Lemonade. Was crowded as s#%t. Took me a half hour to get out of the parking lot. Glad I got to see allot of new gear, but it was very exhausting.

Now on to DOA...

You pay for your flight and hotel...So what! I'm sure many traveled from cross country to attend NAMM.

Now...Elliott pays for a big party on Friday for all DOA members in attendance...What is your cost? ZERO!

Saturday he hosts us at Dean Headquarters and buys us Pizza and lets us try out new stuff in the Artists room. Not to mention he actually lets us handle his vintage Deans and Dimebag's Deans too.

Our cost once again for his graciousness.....ZERO

In the past I've complained about the imports, but I used those guitars strictly for onstage playing. Granted maybe I shouldn't have been so harsh and said. "I'm gonna use them as lawn ornaments."
But I had QC issues with them, which Elliott covered out of his pocket.

You guys don't realize how much it hurts to take something nice like a USA model on stage and have it damaged, destroyed or stolen. That's why I used imports. Maybe I expected too much from them. Now that I no longer play live. I buy the high end Dean guitars again from reputable dealers. I won't mention who or who not is reputable. But I have my list.

When I recorded my last EP in 2005 with SST Overkill, my bass player asked "why don't you take your USA Deans on stage?" I answered him with "Geoff do you have $2500 to replace each of them?" He zipped his mouth up. I also brought up why he didn't buy a P-Bass because they sound so much better than the Gibson LP bass he has. His answer was " I want to buy an American one." I said "It's kinda hard to do when your buying pot, and then you don't have crap for a job." He zipped his mouth up once again.

His failure and Joe's failure to communicate properly with me, caused me to quit the band. He wanted to put the band back together for a benefit gig for the promoter (he died of cancer) who booked our first reunion show, and got us our biggest gig in front of 1500 people. We were suppose to open for Pennywise I was told, but I never saw anything promoted for that show. So I figured it was another BS statement.

I refused to play that show because I didn't want to play with Geoff and Joe again. They burnt their bridges with me.

Guys, don't take for granted this place, because it is a gift horse. Nothing is perfect, but be diplomatic when airing your complaints.

Don't burn your bridges with Elliott. He is a great guy who listens to us. I say that because HE DID BUILD THE SPLITTAIL, and it's nothing less than AWESOME!

Rant over...Flame away
some trouble i've had with my new dean VMNTX
by hanger-18 on Sun Jan 20, 2008 5:36 pm
well a few weeks ago i bought a new dean dave mustaine VMNTX black signature model. i waited a week and when i got it it came damaged pretty badly on the right end of the wing. so my dad called the guy and he said to give the guitar back to UPS and they would send me another one. i had to wait another f'ing week for it and when it came again...to my surpise it came damaged AGAIN Confused this isnt the only thing that pisses me off. i have looked at other peoples vmnt's packaging and there packaged really good...mine came with some sh*tty wraping and chunks of this stirofrome i think thats what its called i mean nothing was protecting it!! im pretty pissed all i want is a good not damaged guitar and i have been playing until the guy calls back and it plays like a monster im really impressed..but i just want to know if any of you guys have had this same problem? Artist models - Dead or Alive
by Anonymous on Sun Jan 20, 2008 7:35 pm
I was hoping to have an adult-themed thread here, please keep the hate to yourselves.

I have never wanted a signature guitar before, until I saw some of the guitars by artists who truly inspired me. (Like Jerry Cantrell, Rik Emmett, etc...) Fortunately for me, these guys are still around and having guitars built. For some though (it seems quite a few lately) the artist is no longer with us. Dime, Bolin, Schuldiner, Rhoads, the list goes on. As long as there are people who want them, someone should make them. Recently there's been some - talk about this, but IMO, I think it's cool! The concept of a % of proceeds directly benefiting the artist's family, or foundation they sponsor/created is an added bonus.

Sig models, Six-string Masterpieces, Chuck Schuldiner Foundation, whatever - it's all good to me. I really wanted a SSM piece, but was outbid everywhere. I am purchasing a BCR Stealth, and I am considering a T Bolin - the guitar looks amazing and all these cool axes are being built by a talented team. I'll get to Jerry & Rik some day, I feel compelled to buy these first though....

(6 weeks, Dean - that V will be mine, MINE MWUAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!) ahem, yeah so...

What do you guys think? Is it nuts to buy a tribute guitar if the player never even played that brand? What if it's master-built and truly gives merit to the artist's tastes and preferences?

By the way, does anyone have more info on the T. Bolin????

What if you couldn't play anymore?
by Darth Jester on Sun Jan 20, 2008 10:00 pm
What if you couldn't play anymore? Naturally it depends how big part of your life guitar or bass or whatever instrument playing is, but I would like to hear your thoughts if you got the bad news.

My story, which inspired this topic, if you're interested...
About a year ago my doctor told me some depressing news. Diagnosis was multiple sclerosis, better known as MS. It's a lovely little thing that attacks the nervous system, slowly damaging it. Among MANY other things it has really made guitar playing hard in a short while. Left hand fingers aren't that accurate anymore, but the biggest promlem is fatigue, after playing for a couple of minutes I'm out of breath, pulse is beyond measureable and hands just die. Well, after all that has happened in the last year and a half, not beign able to play is the smallest inconvenience...

Anyway, how would you react...

Matt emailed a moderator on Trivium World with some pics he took and corrected some info about his guitars. And just to clarify, Matt IS going to have some other colors come out later for all of the rising sun paint job haters. The only confirmed ones are black and gold and white and gold, but Matt has also mentioned a seafoam green w/white bevels possibly coming out. Enough with my rambling, here's what Matt had to say...

"What's up everyone? Matt here at the airport via iphoner.
NAMM ruled! lots of kickass s#%t. especially my fancy new axe. a few
sites didn't have the full scoop on the guitar, and here is the
official info straight from the horse's mouth.

- Pickups: Dean MKH 86 custom pickups

- Features: 24 frets, custom pickups, 1 master volume, 3 way pickup
selector, grover tuners, floyd rose bridge, special neck heel "carve

T.C.F. (hardcore/thrash metal/crossover) new demo
by spacebeer on Mon Jan 21, 2008 9:41 am
Hi guys!

So some time ago I started up this new fun project with a very good friend of mine Rob Slaughter. We both shared our love for old school thrash metal and crossover/hardcore music and decided it was cool for us to have a little jam. In two nights we wrote 10 songs which we recorded. I am pretty happy with the outcome and I think it sound pretty slick for a home recording. We will be releasing this on mini (8 cm) CD in the coming two months. It’s meant for fans of S.O.D./M.O.D./D.R.I./Anthrax/EXCEL/SUICIDAL TENDENCIES and stuff like that. I recorded all the guitar tracks with my ENGL INVADER 100 amp and my custom snow white ML with DiMarzio Schenkers. Please check two almost finished tracks “Core ‘88” and “Slave Of The Suit” at www.myspace.com/thrashcorefanatics
