Amp alternatives?
by Lon on Wed Oct 01, 2008 3:12 pm
Anyone out there not own a conventional amp? I've owned a Fender Champion 30 for about 4 years now, which as many of you know is indeed a Lon world record! Anyway, I sold it yesterday in a fit or insanity so now it's gone, leaving me with only a Digitech RP50 to play through using headphones. I figured I'd just finally breakdown and buy myself a little tube amp like I've always wanted, but what to do in the meantime? I found an old Tandy MMS-10 computer speaker system a while back at work and it's been sitting in my office doing nothing. Tried using it to amplify the Boss MICRO BR that I had but it didn't sound too good. Well I hook it up to the RP50 and Holy Cow! This thing gets about 90% of the tones of my little Fender, which is pretty darn good! I gotta say I'm extremely pleased with this little thing. Here's a couple of pics and as soon as I can I'll get a video on youtube just to show the sound. So, anyone else ampless, and if so what are you using?
From what ive heard (a few times on this forum) , Zakk copied the splittail design from dean and took it to gibson. However, while browsing on youtube recently i spotted this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZS_v2eARqdo&feature=related
(yes i know its got some japanese/chinese subtitles)
(and for those who are too lazy to watch it;)
Zakk said that he designed the splittail and took it to dean first but then said that it was probably gonna be a signature guitar series from gibson. For me, it cleared the confusion up a bit. But i still think that the gibson headstock looks revolting with the shape of the body. Nevrtheless, it should be a zakk wylde signature dean, because i want a splittail and i like that custom finish of his.
strange randall?
by Jesse on Wed Oct 01, 2008 3:29 pm
hello, has anyone here ever heard of a 50 watt randall half stack??...i saw it at a local pawn shop the other day...i've never seen one like it...it was a head and a cab, but it was only up to my waist if that...i beleive its only a 50 watt becuz of the size not sure...its rele old...and the cool thing about it is that its covered in a black and white snake skin covering all over the amp...the front dials and back all look rele old...any one have any idea??
just curious what the deal is with black and gold guitars, especially Deans. It seems that to sum up any guitar that one wants that is classy always falls in the black and gold territory. What is it that makes all you guys appeal to black and gold so much?
Im wanting a new 7 string, im simplfying my setup getting rid of anything i dont need, so 1 pickup and a volume with a set bridge seems the way to go.
has anyone ever played on of these?

Played a MKH 6-string Sig for 45mins today and...
WTF!!! The neck is fatter than Oprah's!!!
I played it thru a 6505 combo.
For anyone wanting to play it, I took some notes.
1) It is quite heavy in comparison to other Deans... it definitely has some weight to it.
2) The shaved heel is truly innovative on a Dean... in fact every Dean from this point forward should have one. It's really, really, really nice.
3) OFR! Huzzah! Thank you Dean!
4) The fretboard looked like Rosewood to me, the guitar tech there agreed it looked like rosewood... not sure if it is ebony, but it really did look like Rosewood - and I have Ebony on my VMNT and there is a noticeable difference.
5) Only a single volume pot, I liked it.
6) Pickups sounded good. Lots of bite. Sounded a bit sterile but still quite warm.
7) Fk'ing fat neck. Lame imo, it's like a Gibson baseball bat.
8 ) I thought 24 frets on 24.75 would suck ass, but it was fine. Easily reachable, the shaved heel made it an easy application.
The Floyd was set up poorly and the pickup heights were way off, but it was a nice playing guitar. Interestingly enough, I couldn't get a Trivium tone out of it as easily as I could from my Razorback or even my VMNT, but it may be due to playing inside a music store and not at home. Steve's wanted 1299 for it - slightly more than a Razorback. (Price in Canadian Dollars.) I don't think I would buy it because the neck is... not my thing. I like thin necks or V necks, not Peter Griffin necks....
Did anyone pick up Jeff Loomis's Zero Order Phase release?
I purchased a copy this week and ripping for my iPOD right now. Killer stuff for the fans of heavier guitar instrumentals. No bad vocals to get in the way on this one (Although I do like Nevermore and Dane's voice.)
Only complaint is the typical one of a lot of todays metal productions.....drums are way too clicky and loud in the mix, especially when played at low volumes (like how this going deaf older fella tends to listen to music.)
EDIT
http://www.myspace.com/jeffloomis
the song Jato Unit is off the CD if anyone wants to take a listen.
PM me I got a question or two...
All praise the South Park Jammies... All others = EPIC PHAIL!!!!!!! Look at the flame on my dresser!!!
So the cat is out of the bag I guess. Yeah that is right folks. I am getting married on Halloween to Andrea, my fiance'. We are getting married in Vegas and are staying at the Hard Rock. This is guitar related because I get to go to Ed Roman guitars to play around. Andrea insisted that I go, so I won't let her down by saying no! LOL Anyway, if any of you are in the area and want to say hi, please let me know. YAY ME!!!
Here is some pron of the love of my life. The best part is that she rules more than most girls because she does tour management and marketing as her career. So I got the right one this time!!! LOL
i've been busy lately, and after doing my daily pop punk band practice with a gibby sg i finaly sat down with my razor v for the first time in probably 2 MONTHS! and all i could think was, "wow dean guitars rule!" got the lisence plate on my car, and necklace i wear every day, and i'm on here all the time. but i had just forgotten how awsome dean guitars were, so i just wanted to say...
DEAN PWN'S MUTHA FUKKA!
Les Paul style 2 Volumes 2 Tones 2 ways to wire it...
I can't find the post now, but I remember somebody asking about wiring up 2 pickups so that the 2 volume pots worked independently instead of either one turning down both pickups. Well I found these:

Darrell Roberts is ET!!! FFDP vid
by otomix on Thu Oct 02, 2008 8:25 am
Hey guys, Darrell Roberts has the longest fingers konwn to man. he makes anything he plays look easy!
Now i know that there is a lot of five finger death punch haters on the forum, I for one like them so kiss my balls if you dont! its a great vid either way, as hes a guitarist, this is a guitar forum, and i think that its pretty cool to see new people playing new ("errr thats not new") stuff!
I think I like them more because Zoltan Bathory is hungarian as is my background!

Well I redid my ML again lol. I filled in the rhythm pickup hole, the switch, and the volume/tone knobs.
Is now this lol.
Not the best job ever. Looks great from a distance though lol.
Still need to choose a pup for it.. and I know idea where to even begin.
You can see where the rhythm pickup hole is.. but whatever. This was my first major project I have done. Still has potential for another job another day lol.
Taking Trains To Gigs
by Wombat on Thu Oct 02, 2008 1:41 pm
Those of you who ride trains to gigs are now much safer!
Dressed as a monkey, Acchan Miyan - also known as Gudde - capers about at the Charbag railyway station in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, to scare away the troublesome creatures.
He said: "There were many monkeys here. But all of them have run away. I can't see even a single monkey here. There were thousands of monkeys here.
"People warned me that I will be eaten away by the simians. But I scared them all away. If I stay here for one week at the station I will scare away all the monkeys."
"There used to be many monkeys here, who would indulge in all kinds of mischief."
"At times they would snatch away bananas from passengers."

WELCOME HOME (Clippatorium)
(I didn't write this) But HAHAHAHA!
Welcome to where sound is ill
No one hears but mixes still
Volume is full, never seems to change
Just mastered mentally deranged
Dream the same thing every night
I see dynamics in my sight
No bricked walls, no waveforms barred
No sounds to make my brain seem scarred
Hear, my friend, the GH3
That dream is my reality
They found in Rick no sonic mage
But absence makes him get his wage
Clippatorium, leave me be
Clippatorium, just leave me alone
Full blast all tracks of songs on there
Sound cannot breathe the open air
He whispers things into their brains
Assuring them of what's insane
Gregs head is clearly up Ricks pants
"artistic choice" brings ripping plans
Make it loud, it will sound well
It's in your face, what James will yell
No more shall they phone mixes in
Listen, damn it, DM sounds thin
Don't hear a thing, but fuzzing well
Music great but clipping hell
Clippatorium, leave me be
Clippatorium, just leave me alone
Clippatorium, just leave me alone
Fear of listening on
Distortion gets relentless now
Bleeding in my ear
Got some pause to do
Loudness strikes back hard
Sheep, it's an annoying herd
Getting in our way
For hearing things again
Put a price on your favorite guitar
I know many of us have favorite guitars. Guitars that you'd never sell.
But what if you had to put a price on them? It's easy to say 'I'd never sell', but how much $$$$ would it take?
My two-tone blackened Soltero is my favorite guitar. I'd sell it for $15,000. No one would ever pay that much for it. Not even close. I'd like to say 'I'd never sell it', but if some insane wealthy person said $15,000, I'd take it.
so im trying to put my LP together again and im stuck im tryin to wire the old iceman pickup directly to a volume put but i don't know what to solder where. the wires are different then on the seymour duncan
Black white and red wires. red the smallest black the biggest
Should be in the Dime Section, but I careth not....
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1y925ubcQPE&feature=related
Dunno if that's a repost, probably is - but it's some bands tribute song to the Man himself. Quality stuff!
Need some pickup reccommendations
Topic title says it all, I'm looking for something out of the usual EMG/Duncan/Dimarzio stuff. Tried just about everything from them, absolutely love the J.B. I'm looking for something a little more gritty than that. I've been looking at the GHS crunchy rails or whatever, maybe some bill lawrence pups but I'm not really into custom ordering stuff like that.
Oh and before I forget, the pickups are going into a 79 MLF with an original floyd. I play through a valveking 212 and play mostly thrash metal.
I made this video through crappy computer speakers. They were 19.99 seriously. the tone is pretty warm and ballsy. Sounds great in the same room. This is one sweet pedal. The proof is in the tone and definition. Sounding this good through crap speakers it would be a monster through a PA.

The God That Failed Cover (Not Me)
This guy looks JUST LIKE Cliff Burton. Plus, he's playing a Dean '79.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OhbuDW389o
Can't imagine how they would've sounded had Cliff not died. R.I.P.
whats your pickup of choice?
me and my friend were talking about this today
so i was wondering what you guys like
i personally love Seymour Duncan invaders and the jb
Thoughts on multi effects pedals
Looking at maybe purchasing a multi effects pedal, but not sure witch one to got with, I'm interested in the Boss ME 50, but are there better ones out there, and I'm looking for something somewhat easy to use. Any opinions, soundclips, whatever you might have would be greatly appreciated.
Do they make a USA razorback 255
24 frets 25.5 scale.
atleast 24 frets, with 24 you not only have 2 frets, but because of the extra 2 there is a larger cut away giving more fret acess to the others. I only mention this because i didn't want to hear a bunch of people screaming at me that you don't need the 24 frets. i understand that.
25.5 scale would be nice, but i'd be okay if they make a usa 24 fret with 24.75 scale kinda like the new trivium guitar. but that thing is ugly and has no fret markers.
any pictures if anyone knows they make usa 24 frets.

Alright guys (and girls!) Last night i got my soldering iron out (!) and decided to have a play with the wiring of my goth V. Its now running as such. Pickups to toggle to one volume to output jack. Dead simple, dead easy, didnt take too long an now it looks even more killer!
Also made a traction knob!
x2 opinions sound reenforcement]
ive gt an x2 stack on the way and have heard that they need to be accessorized to get the most out of them/ ive heard various names isp, furman and a few others anyone got advice im not sure what to expect as ive never had one any help appreciated
I had the most bizarre Dean dream
I had the most bizarre Dean dream last night.
I've had similar dreams my whole life, but with slight variations.
Here's what it is -
I'm in a warehouse store like Costco or Sam's Club. They have a giant vending machine near the front. I notice they have a beautiful green Time Capsule V in the venting machine for $1.25. It was trans green over quilt and triple binding. It was sharp looking V.
I figure I could use a V and $1.25 is cheap.
So I put in $1.25 but I accidently hit D1 on the machine instead of C1. I end up getting a box of Milk Duds instead of a Time Capsule V.
The weirdest part is that I'm not that upset. I like Milk Duds too, so I'm ok with it.
CAMO EMGS!

REPOST
We've noticed a recent increase in the number of obvious or thinly-disguised Off Topic threads. We've tried to moderate this Forum as minimally as possible, but this is one of the specific areas that has previously been addressed. The deletion of the Off Topic section of this Forum was in direct response to the increase of threads that were completely off-topic and spiraled downward to nothing of benefit for anyone.
There are many other websites devoted specifically to political discussions and other topics other than guitars. If you wish to publish your views and discuss them with others via the internet, we suggest that you use those Forums for those topics. This Forum, however, will stick to topics on guitars and music.
Please send us a Private Message if you have any specific questions on this matter.
Thanks.
Question: Why is this a REPOST?
Answer: The first one degenerated into name-calling and a revisit/debate on the removal of the Off Topic Section.
It is not surprising.
i'm doing a presentation in my public speaking class on Megadeth vs. Metallica. i'm just running this poll indefinitely so if you guys would give your honest opinion that would be great, and then once you vote if you could post your gender and age i would be very appreciative. Thanks everyone!

Missing this Dallas Texan on his Birthday.
I don't think I've ever played with a guitarist who didn't list this Texan as an inspiration:

HELP!!! I need advice quickly on an Acoustic
by BKW on Sat Oct 04, 2008 2:27 pm
I want to add an acoustic to my collection (and need to decide this weekend). I am looking at both the Deans and Luna. I'd love to get the Trinity, but my budget will not take a 1,900 acoustic.
My budget limit would be $650.
So I am opening it up to the experts here, who's expertise I respect and appreciate. what do you suggest?
Cynic
by Brendan on Sat Oct 04, 2008 3:33 pm
I've really been getting into them recently for some reason, it's really interesting, it's like Fusion mixed with metal a lot of times. The vocals will take some getting used to, the singer uses a vocal processor to produce what has been described as a "Robotic vocal".
Celestial Voyage (They got booed a lot as they were touring with Cannibal Corpse, and I couldn't see Cannibal Corpses crowd being too friendly with a band that was as that different from Cannibal Corpse.)

Wooooooo I bought a new amp and cab!!! Its amzing! A 6505 and Marshall 1960bv but the only problem is my Razorback sounds very weak and twanky through it compared to my other guitars. I used to use solid state amps and it soudned great throught those but it sounds to twangy and trebely, Maybe a new pickup could solve the problem. I was thinking of a SD Invader
I know there have been topics on the Agiles before, but I need a decent bass to record and I have never heard anything about the Agile basses. They're cheap and look decent, has anyone here had any experiences with them? Thanx.

by Arc-Fett on Sat Oct 04, 2008 11:12 pm
Wow so i went to guitar center today, cause I relized that i have never played gibsons before so i went, and found a White Gibson les paul, this one in fact http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibson-Custom-Shop-Les-Paul-Custom-Electric-Guitar?sku=517110 but in white. Played that for awhile. But I really wanted to play one with EMG's, and the only one that I knew of was in Epiphone Prophecy, but i could not find one. so my brother, said "lets go look at other stuff" so i was like, ok fine. started walking, and OMG there was the prophecy, so i grabbed it, and went and found an amp, Holy S$!% that guitar was amazing, the finish looked so good, Ebony fretboard, 81/85 EMGs WOW. I know its not a Dean, but it was still freakin awesome
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Epiphone-Les-Paul-CustomEX-with-EMG-8185-Pickups-Electric-Guitar?sku=515618
looks WAY better in person
Really weird Dean on Ebay (Please give your opinion)
So me being a cadillac geek, I'm searching on ebay (looking for czechness ).. And find this..
http://cgi.ebay.com/Dean-Cadillac-1980-Flametop-Purpleburst-Finish-NEW_W0QQitemZ260293330182QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item260293330182&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Take slight suspiciousness out of the factor and you have a good deal on a neat fiddle! Has anyone else seen something like this before? The price I can cope with.. But it seems a little odd to be selling such a obscure guitar with only one picture.

....money is no object.
your band and fly itself to the moon and play if you feel so inclined, that's the budget.
what do you do?
personally, i'd have to do an animated video. i just think they're so cool, and each one is so stylized and unique.

bjork's video done by spumco (the ren and stimpy dudes.)
not to mention tenacious D's video for "%$#@! her gently"
i love the John Kricfalusi style.
of course, on the less "cartoony" side, there's pearl jams sweet video for "do the evolution" EASILY my favorite music video of the past 10 years. it's got everything a guy could want in a video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoNmNmXExZ8
it's like the welcome to the machine video had a crazy 4 way with the "the wall", "akira", and "the matrix" and do the evolution is the resulting bastard, and you're never quite sure just who fathered it. McFarlane is the man, and though he got more acclaim from the korn video, i think do the evolution is at least 10 times better. it's one of those videos so good that you'll actually buy the album based on it.
and who could forget tool's video for sober?

Thanks

*is going crazy trying to harmonise*
K, seriously, is there some sort of like... magical insight that's required to be able to write a harmony that doesn't sound dissonant? I've gone absolutely NUTS trying to harmonise melodies in the songs I've been writing. I've tried 3rds, 5ths, 7ths, millionths, the whole shabang and nothing sounds good to my ear.
The melody uses THESE notes: F#, G, A, Bb, C, D, Eb
Now if I'm NOT mistaken, and please feel free to correct me on this, but all those notes just HAPPEN to be in G minor, right? Everything I put with it makes my ears bleed, so I'd REALLY appreciate it if anyone could help me out.
wow
just freaking wow
if you live anywhere near LA or can get anywhere near LA before the end of November, get to the Open Fist & see the stage adaptation of Joe’s Garage
took the wife Friday night, & it’s taken some time to try to get the words
sad, of course, that what the man was talking about 30 years ago is “so” real now, but
wow
been listening to this album for years, & to see it come to life is awesome
if nothing else--the minimalist staging, the Central Scrutinizer puppet, the sweet band, the actresses, the wet t-shirt, the humor, the satire, the “Peaches En Regalia” outro, & even, if you’re so inclined, Joe’s naked ass--go for the 9 minutes or so when the stage lights drop, & you listen to “Watermelon in Easter Hay” in the absolute dark
a-freakin-mazing
oh, & this show has the approval of the Zappa Family Trust--in fact, Gail & Diva were there Friday

Children of Bodom and the Black Dahlia Murder
Got to see them on the First at Newport Music hall in Columbus, Ohio. The show was amazing. They tore it up. Anyone else seen/going to see this tour?
whats with country music these days
I was flipping channels and came upon one of their channels and got stuck there for about an hour. I despise country music but wtf. every video came on for an hour straight had the most beautiful chix. wow so thats how they suck people into liking it.
Taylor Swift, cant sing a note in tune live but wow
Hiedi something, i cant remember her name. definitely milf action
Carrie Underwood, one step away from porn looking chic
Kelly Piclar boing
there were like 4 other chics too. Maybe I chose the wrong style of music to play. Just sit there and strum G major chords and play major penatonics. The scenery is nice over there but the music is obnoxious.
Hey everyone.I was talking to a friend of mine about pedals, and I told him what I was looking for as far as tone is concerned.I want growling and chunky lows, and lots of mids and gain for tapping and pinch harmonics. He recommended I try out the Digitech Metal Master pedal.Does anyone here have one,and if so,could you give me some info on it,how does it sound etc? Thanks in advance!

For a Mesa head?! One site -the only one with US prices I pulled up had all their heads for over $4399! WTF?! I can buy an ENGL and JVM for that!
Internal combustion guitar
Im not sure what to make of this, any comments ? http://www.internalcombustionguitar.com/how.htm
Did dime actually play a razorback?
i read everywhere that he never played one, but then i coulda sworn that there was a green striped one that was broken that someone claimed he played.
Any other reason you play Deans besides Dime's influence?
Firstly, I have nothing but respect for the memory and work of Dimebag Darrel, he's one of my favorite guitar players, and Pantera was an amazing band.
BUT! I actually don't connect Dean Guitars directly to Dime...I've always wanted a Dean because of the fact that Iron Maiden used them back in the early 80s.
I thought it would be interesting to hear who else in here chose to play Dean Guitars for reasons other than anything related to Dime himself....comments?
Hey guys,
I've got a small gig at the school pep assembly and I need two songs to play. I can't play like metal or anything to old so does anyone know good popular music from nowadays I could play?

I want that tone!
i know its low gain, but on my POS avt 20 i can even get close to the harmonizing sound of that 5105.
i cant really get a new amp but i could probably swing a pedal or 2, so i need input. does anybody know what pedals matt tuck has and where he puts the settings on his amp (bass/treble/mids)? i am really totally clueless here.
*EDIT: i was thinking maybe a big muff for that distortion/sustain?
Ok so here is my problem. My band is getting ready to do our first gig at the end of october but my amp is not ready for and gigging. I've got a peavy backstage chorus amp that sound like s#%t when turned past 4. So i was wondering if anyone has an ok metal amp sitting around that would be willing to sell or trade for a decent price. I'm dieing here guys! Can anyone help a forum brother out?
Bohoo, my Dean logos are crooked, that's DBD T in the pic and the same thing applies with DOF. I don't really mind... but thought to post anyway (if there are other like me). Sloppy work Mr. Asian entrepreneur.
Going to see Clutch tonight at little club in CO Springs called The Black Sheep. Been a fan for 15 years and this is the first time seeing em play!

Anyone Else use wound third strings?
I have a set of D'Addario 12's on my ml (24 3/4" scale) with a wound third tuned to standard D and it is AMAZING
It feels so much more stable and sounds amazing, but does anyone else besides me use them?

that's the link, i hope it works,
anyway, it's a union jack razorback, 24 frets, original floyd rose, import, i guess it is 24.75 scale, it looks to be,
but what the hell, is this a limited run or are new imports going to start having 24 frets and ofr
This is what i want but i don't want that union jack s#%t.
it has passive pickups too, i don't like emgs.
What do you guys think about this?
As soon as i sell my ibanez and get more money im gonna get a Dean 79MLF in Brazilian Burst, customized with a chrome Original Floyd Rose, a DiMarzio PAF Pro (cream/black with chrome pole pieces) in the neck, and a B&B Bill Lawrence L-500XL (black and shielded in the chrome plated housing) in the bridge. i was just wonderin what you all thought about this setup. also do they make gold traction knobs? traction knobs are very handy, but like the gold knobs better for this guitar.

Well I trade my Marshall MG100HDFX today for this, and it was still brand new in the box when I got, and sounds great for what it is. Not to mention this thing is pretty damn loud for only being 5watts.
So I give you the Peavey Valve King Royal 8.
Need Feedback on Schenker "Lights Out" Pickup
by jay h on Tue Oct 07, 2008 3:02 am
I just purchased an NOS Pro Series ML (for $535!), and while I love the guitar, I'm not overly enamored with the stock JB bridge pickup. I'd like to replace it with a hotter, fatter-sounding, ceramic-magnet unit, and the Lights Out looks--and sounds--like it might fit the bill.
As I've been unable to locate any sound clips beyond the one on the Dean site, I'm hoping someone here can provide some real-world feedback. I'm especially interested in hearing how this pickup sounds in relation to the Duncan SH-6B Distortion, which I'm currently using in the bridge position of my other two guitars.
Thanks in advance for your help.
New amp finally came.. I cant say how excited I am... my only problem is I dont have any apre time for a couple weeks to really play it
Leslie West Soltero Standard
Anyone have any experience with this guitar, the import LW Sig?
I'm interested in one as both the specs and price seem right to me.
But if possible I'd like to hear some personal experiences with the guitar.
How's overall build quality and hardware?
Do they fit in a generic Les Paul case, or will I need to look for a specific case?
Media Coursework Assistance
Ok, so for my AS Media coursework I’m making a music/equipment magazine cover, contents & double page spread. Was wondering if you guys could give me a hand by answering these questions, because most guys that use Deans I assume listen to music ranging from hard rock, to black metal. Thanks.
1.What genre of music would you be most interested in buying a magazine?
2.Generally speaking, how much music content when compared to equipment content would you prefer?
3.What type of equipment advice would you prefer to read about? (e.g. guitar, amp or pedals)
4.Are there any specific types of column you would enjoy reading? (e.g. relationships, random internet garbage et.)
5.Would live reviews for smaller or larger band be more useful?
Again, thanks & mock ups for the covers, contents & page spreads will be posted. If you would like to be on the contents page as a subsection (or if you’re in Stoke & could make a photo shoot) just drop me a pm with your band name/website.
Note: Question about equipment advice so i can post here, yay

i know that you arent always a dean artist when oyu play a dean live, but the singer/bassist for Kings X was playing a lefty dean bass when i saw them live. i think dean should give him a signature bass cause kings x has been around forever and they are good as s#%t

Thinking of building a guitar, any recommended literature?
by milje on Wed Oct 08, 2008 2:41 am
So I'm thinking of building a guitar, anyone know of any good books out there for help? I have just about everything tool-wise that I think I'd need in the garage, except maybe something for cutting fret slots unless that's easier than I figured. I have a basic idea about how I'd go about this, but would like to read up a bit on how to do some stuff, wood selection (dad owns a hardwood sawmill, so I have easy access to a few different species, hard maple especially), etc.
Now that I'm done with college I'm trying to find a way to keep myself busy this winter when I'm not at work. Figure I might as well build a guitar or three

Ok guys, idk what you think, but i saw a video of manson in korea with wes borland...
it was shitty, mansons vocals are done and wes's tone was really bad he added stuff that just shouldent be added to a manson song, manson is not really a guitar driven band, if they become one thats different but all the old stuff (excluding daisy's time) was not guitar driven, wes just brings to much too it that isnt needed in a manson song. and pogo is gone so wtf, if i didnt love the old manson music so much i would boycot haha
</rant >
I heard Randy used a Dean besides his normal Jackson, even on wiki it said he used one too. Anyone have any pics of him using one to confirm this?

Student forced to remove Machine Head t-shirt
http://www.thegauntlet.com/article/267/14084/Machine%20Head.html
A New Orleans, Louisiana high school teacher allegedly forced a student to remove her Machine Head t-shirt during class because the teacher objected to the anti-war message that was printed on the shirt's back.
The fan, who posts on Machine Head's official message board, "The Frontlines," under the name "Robyn", wrote in an October 3, 2008 posting, "A couple weeks ago I bought the 'War' t-shirt from the Machine Head store and I got it in the mail yesterday and I wore it to school today. The shirt that says 'War, Lies, Fear, Change' on the back. [see image below] Well, when I got to school today, my English teacher told me I couldn't wear it and I had to call home to get a different shirt. Well, I had no idea, but [the teacher's] son is in Iraq right now. I mean, I know [the message printed on the back of the shirt] has a lot to do with politics and everything, but it's not like I was talking about it or anything. Because they tell us at school that we're not supposed to talk about religion or politics. But half the kids in that school don't really give a s#%t or they're just to below 70 IQ type to know anything.
Did they have any right in telling me to take it off?"
The "War! Lies! Fear! Change!" slogan is based on the lyrics to the Machine Head song "Clenching the Fists of Dissent", which opens the band's latest album, 'The Blackening'.
The U.S. version of the special edition of 'The Blackening' is scheduled for release on October 28 via Roadrunner Records. 'The Blackening Special Edition' is two-disc CD/DVD set that will feature an assortment of extras, including rare bonus tracks such as covers of Iron Maiden's "Hallowed Be Thy Name", over an hour of live performance footage from With Full Force, Download and Rock in Rio festivals, three uncensored music videos for "Aesthetics of Hate", "Now I Lay Thee Down" and "Halo", a "making-of" featurette on each video, "The Making of The Blackening" and expanded artwork. There's also what many hardcore fans have been rabidly waiting for: four never-before-seen performances of Machine Head celebrating the 10th anniversary of their debut album, 'Burn My Eyes', captured in Philadelphia in 2004.

MHG question
by * on Wed Oct 08, 2008 11:20 pm
does the headstock have to be painted?
formula had a firebrand headstock gibson (either an LP or an SG. think it was a lester), and it looked so freaking awesome.
i wonder if that's available on the MHG series. it looks so clean.
the natural body/painted HS just doesn't work for me.
So, I decided to try these out a while back. 3 weeks to be exact. And am writing a review now, after the fact. I am a "new strings every show" kind of guy and am anti coated strings as Bush is anti stem cell. (I don't agree with Bush, but I needed a reference). So on a whim, since I love EB strings, I decided to try a pack. I was kind of surprised to see them actually. I know they made the coated Acoustic strings in the gold foil pack. So while in GC 3 weeks back I noticed a silver foil pack with the EB logo. Surprised to see they were electric strings I decided to buy a few packs. The first thing I noticed was the price. $9.99 for coated strings? Hmm they can't be that good. I have tried Elixir and didn't like them, plus they cost more. The DR coated strings were costly and flaked all over the place. Cleartone were great but at $17.99 a pack who can afford them? But I digress..... OK so I get home and open the first pack up. The first thing I realized was that these strings don't appear to be coated at all and for some reason the winding around the ball is a different color than the string? WTF? Off to the EB website I go WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
So the lowdown is that the strings have a proprietary enamel that is used as the coating material and it is supposed to Blah Blah Blah (buymebuymebuyme I am better than other coated string BS). Whatever I have heard it all before. Next I read that the ball end of the string is wrapped in Titanium for extra strength to prevent breakage over time of use. WOW OK that is why it is a different color. Anywho, I string my guitar up and stretch the strings out and tell myself.... Self?... You are not going to change these strings until one breaks or the sound goes dead. Now some of you know that EB strings sound great but they don't last very long. I change strings so much that I don't even notice though. So it has been 3 weeks of shows, rehearsals and auditions we have been hosting to find our new drummer. Summary? They are as new as they were the day I put them on the guitar. Shiny and full of life! I am gonna shoot for 2 months to see if they can go the distance, but either way I have found a new string. Anyone else try these?
Vox AD15VT-XL vs Randall RG75G3+
Yeah its another amp advice thread, please dont hurt me
Basically im looking to downgrade, I have a Peavey Triple XXX combo atm, and its a great amp, but overkill for my current situation (bedroom player). I cant really crank it up too much or i get parents/neighbours complaining (I only crank it when no ones home) so I want an amp I can get the most out of all the time. If I sell the Peavey I will have around £400 to play with, but unfortunatly my local guitar store closed down so im not currently able to go out and try amps. Ive been doing a lot of research and have come across 2 amps that interest me, the Vox AD15VT-XL, and the Randall RG75G3+. The Vox is only around £100, while the G3+ is around £240, mainly because the Vox is only 15 watts while the Randall is 75 watts. The Vox is a modeller, features 11 amp models, 2 clean, 9 dirty, and a variety of fx. The Randall is solid state/hybrid with 1 tube in power section (i think).
Id like to know which amp you guys think I should go for? I need something that has a GOOD tone (not looking for a Mesa tube tone or anything, just something that sounds decent and not crudy) common sense tells me the Randall would sound better, as its solid state not a modeller, i would presume it has the more realistic tone, the price also reinforces this. But how digital does the Vox really sound? Does it sound like a real amp or is it the same as line 6 sort of sound? I already have a line 6 toneport so I dont need anything that sounds the same as that, as imo it doesnt sound that good.
So, Vox vs Randall, please point me in the right direction

Hey guys, long time no see!!!!! Well my next guitar is going to be the 79 series V in classic black. I will probably change out the pups for an EMG 81 in the bridge and a 85 in the neck depending on how the stock pups sound. i might change the knobs.... anyways, what im asking is that im going to change the bridge and was wondering what size TOM locking bridge fits the guitar. Small posts or Large posts????? also if someone could give me some details on the pups that would be great.

FRT-O2000
by _koppen on Thu Oct 09, 2008 10:51 am
As anyone may have noticed, there is a new Flod Rose original tremolo out on the market.
It's called the FRT-O2000, and it's an exackt copy of the OFR, same materials etc.. only diffrence is that it is made in korea instead.
It says OFR on it, and there is no diffrence exept the price.
Jackson Guitars has already started to use em, and i know there a more comapnys who is on there way, for their cheaper guitars.
My thught is, does anyone else think this is a good idea for Dean to start using them on the imports since they wont likley change to real OFR.
But this would be a great thing to do, no cosmetic dooffrence, and the same performance!!
Thoughts anyone?

Best and Worst names for guitars
My current worst named guitar is the Hamer Talladega. Hamer makes quality guitars and that model looks like a nice instrument. But everytime I hear that name I think of Ricky Bobby. That was a funny movie though.
Who is the guitar company that names their guitars with the cryptic letters and numbers? "This model is the RX657-9B" Is that Ibanez? Or someone else? I hate names like that.
My favorite name for a guitar is the Iceman.

soltero hardware decisions
I am/ have purchased a MHG soltero, but i haven't decided which hardware to put on it yet, right now i am stuck between going with black hardware and satin nickel pickup covers, or going with satin nickel hardware, black rings and satin nickel pickup covers. i would really like to hear what some of you guys think about these ideas, i don't want to go with just the standard all black, but i think the black with the satin nickel pickup covers would look pretty sharp. on the other hand however i think satin nickel hardware would also look pretty awesome on the natural mahogany finish.
in no way will my final decision be based soley off this thread, but i would like to hear some opinions from the general populus of the forum. or even better if anyone has some pics of a guitar with a natural mahogany finish and satin nickel hardware if you could post em up i would be forever greatful. thanks

Single coil pickups for metal...
Just pulled my old strat out the loft and have decided to start playing it again, just cleaned it up and its looking real nice, but ive just found out that its tone is horrible. Im thinking a pickup change could give this guitar new life, but I dont know the first thing about single coils so could anyone recommend me some good high output single coils that would be great for metal? I looked on the EMG website but as far as I can see it doesnt say anything about 'metal' on their single coil section. The only high output single coil ive found so far is the Seymour Duncan SHR-1B Hot Rail. Is this pickup any good?

EDIT: And once ive found a pickup for the bridge, what about the middle and neck positions?

Parametric EQ Rane PEQ 55 ? // And some Vintage Gear
Have any of you guys ever heard of or tried this Rane PEQ 55 Parametric EQ? I can't find any Customer reviews on it. It looks like it will work better than my Furman PQ-4's I used to have. They have more range and tone shift adjustment and I like the dual 2" rack size for both heads I have. Anyone know about this unit? Im thinking of trying it once I can afford it. It has some winning audio award and it's refered to as a secret weapon.

XLR and 1/4 inch outputs?
I also bought some cool stuff on Fleabay. Every now and then someone comes along and has something worth how it's actually written within their auction.
An original owner of a MXR Blue face Flanger Doubler. This one actually sat in a Mixing house most of it's life. And a Korg SDD 1000 Digital Delay. Also the original Owner! Not a scratch on it. and he had this ole MXR Digital Delay-113 that he honestly said he wasn't the original owner of but he said it works perfectly. When it arrived the AC cord on the outside was so brittle after 28+ years UPS bent it to bubble wrap it and it broke outside the box so I had to replace it. The seller apologized and said send it back if I want to. So I repaired it to just see how one of these things works. It's a keeper. Check out the inside... Extra memory slots!
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd318/DragonFlySlayer/MoreMemoryOrtimeslots.jpg
Finished AC cord... A no Brainer. The only thing I could find visibly was the small bolts that hold the power supply transformer needed snugging.

The MXR 113 Delay has beautiful action and sound for a Delay. And there is knobs! Perfect for my Violin Bow or about anything. With one board I have 320ms ...If I had the other three boards I would have something like 1230 or so... I forget..
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd318/DragonFlySlayer/KorgSDD1000-1.jpg
Then I noticed this guy had one other auction ...It's an Eventide H3000 D/SE without a scratch just like he pulled it out of the box.
Man I kept looking at that and looking at that... He wanted about $70.00 to ship it and his buy it now price was right at $1400.00
I remember back about 17 years ago they sold in this condition for just over $3000.00.
So considering it's condition after about a week of looking at it and watching people throw lame bids at it I said it kind of hurts a bit but I will always wish I snagged that thing so I said "Come to Mr.Rodent".
http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd318/DragonFlySlayer/EventideH3000DSE.jpg
So far everything works flawless but I have to get some connection boxes for the XLR connections on the back of the Eventide so I can test drive it through my amp since I don't have a mixer.
And I also will have some stuff to learn with layering effects and parameters thats for sure! I have the owners manual. I will need it. Reviews on the H3000 speak quite highly of it even compared to the latest H8000FW for $5500.00. People still have a place in their heart for the H3000.
But on that Rane PEQ 55 Parametric EQ has anyone ever dealt with this? Or is it too new?
Im thinking of maybe some parametric EQ down the road ...

So, I saw one of these cheap in a music shop in town (ex-demo) and tried it out for a little while...pretty damn impressive!
Even at low volumes, it sounded awesome.
But does anyone here have experience with these heads? How did you find it? What about in the long term? Gigging experiences etc. etc.
New Guitar Day!!! (another Washy....sorry)
My new Washburn ET Idol arrived today and its been difficult to put down long enough to take some pics
After a quick tune up it came pretty much completely playable right out of the case, although I will give it a proper set up tomorrow (the action could be a tiny bit lower). The neck is pretty thin, which I was quite surprsied about. Its not Ibanez thin, but it is slightly thinner and flatter than my Dimeslime. Plays great though, very slick, especially with the ebony fret board. The inlays are cool, half abalone, half pearl blocks.
The EMG's sound great! This guitar has a real deep, beefy tone due to the 2 inch thick mahogany body, and I love the clean tones, very warm sounding. She's definitley a keeper
Just some quick pron, as I'm no specialist with a camera. (BTW, this is definitely one of those "looks way better in person" axes )
Mmmmmmmm.........ebony........
My growing Washburn family (I'll get a Dean soon, I swear )
NGD: ESP CUSTOM SHOP URBAN CAMO V
by zao on Fri Oct 10, 2008 10:55 pm
I figured i would make a thread because i think this guitar deserves it and i think its pretty cool. i havent been doing too many NGD threads and i dont see the point anymore of doing one everytime i buy something but if it seems special then i like to share my pics.
This guitar was custom ordered by my friend nileguy who is on the espboards and it has been a guitar i have lusted for, he finally decided to sell it and i was at the right place at the right time. Esp has a photo of this guitar on their japanese site under the custom shop. nileguy spec'd out a pretty badass guitar imo. im also glad he sold it because esp has been making a few mistakes on the custom orders and they have been taking over a year on some orders.
Heres a few specs for ya:
dv8 style body shape with mahogany body and instead of the usual maple neck-thru it has a mahogany neck with ebony fretboard, normally the dv8 is stringthru and another nice change is the floyd, its got emgs and the alexi laiho shaped neck, the inlays are the logo for a fallout shelter and its finished in urban camo satin.
So far it sounds awsome thru my herbert and is a tone monster, im really happy with the craftsmanship and the feel of this guitar.:thu:
Heres a few pics i took, they look kinda shitty and dont do the guitar justice but what do you expect from a iphone.
I'm looking at a new amp, since I'm going to be very much in the market soon and was looking at the Marshall MG Combos. To my surprise, there is only a $30 difference between the 100W and 250W version. What the deal with that? And why is the 100W 4 pounds more then the 250W???
100W 52 lbs.

how do you dress on stage?
i've been doing the whole t-shirt jeans thing for a while and my band is thinking about doing some image realignment. were thinking of having two colors, black or white. on the days we all wear black i would wear, black skinny jeans, black macbeth shoes, black dress shirt, black tie, black vest, black leather belt w/black studs, black wallet chain. on the days we wear white i would wear the exact same thing only all that in white. so my question here is have you guys ever does stuff like that before? does it work well? does a band like that appeal to you guys? i wear allot of suits so i don't think it would be that hard. and what do you guys wear on stage? is there any constant in your wardrobe? and what style of music are you guys playing along with your style.
I am in the market for a new amp. I really want something that is 100 watts but the most i would be able to spend is $500. Can anyone give me any help with this? What are some options? I would love to get a marshall so what is out there in MY price range? If there is something out there that isnt a marshall but would give me "twisted and insane" tones that fit people that are in to the "insane, twisted, and thick chops" genre then please list that too. with the above comment i want it to rival the quality of a marshall but still be in my price range. thanks for the help and remember... $500

Noobish Question About Pickups
I was scanning through the DMT pickup webpage here and realized that I still have no clue what it means to be "F-Spaced" or "G-Spaced". I have a feeling like it's something really obvious, but even after eight and a half years of playing, I still have no clue as to what either of those mean.
So, could somebody explain to me what those two terms mean as well as other pickup oriented term definitions not mentioned in my question?
Thanks!

" So..........You've finally come to your senses. Come to realize what Ive always known. The sons and daughters of Lucifer have been free in these streets for much too long. Now is the time for all God fearing people to unit and spill the blood of the wicked. I say we cut out their slimey guts and burn them to a crsip" then a big explosion then we start. Anyone know what movie that was from.I cant remember.
ao now we are in the market to get another good one.
Anyone have any good ideas?
Blackest of the Black Tour
by TF89 on Sun Oct 12, 2008 11:19 pm
So me and some friends saw Danzig, Dimmu Borgir, Moonspell, Winds of Plaque, and Skeletonwitch last nite. unfortunately, we couldnt bring cameras or cellphones in (thanks Danzig) all the bands were amazing! (except for Danzig, he's getting too old) and i got an autograph from Dimmu's bassist. it was pretty damn awesome!
it is somewhere in the picture below(thanks to scrapnasty for bringing the camera). it's just below the marshall kerry king.
thanks to bloodroot for cluing me in on where to start with one of these monsters. robert and i di.cked with it all day. couldn't get a bad tone from it. they do like passives better, but that might be because i only plugged in the duncan h/m live wire active and it is too high gain in itself.
it's better than the kk marshall for sure. the powerball is more smooth, where as the marshall is more like a chainsaw.
anyway, you guys know what they look like, but a couple of the pics we took anyways.
be advised, this is just the good stuff. all the imports are upstars. and thanks to my boy chris jenkins and dina for hooking me up with the sister to the spalted mlf. i love you guys. got something in the truck for you....you can see it in front of the phone on the right.
oh yeah, notice the open bar on the right for all d.o.a. members. got just about everything you can name in there. the jagermister machine is behind the guitar cases. bring your a$$ down to texas and i'll show you a GOOD time.

Lets see some white guitars
by Douce on Mon Oct 13, 2008 1:22 am
I've been really gasing over guitars with solid white finishes lately, and wanted to see what kind of guitars everyone in the forum might have that i can drowl over, aha. Doesn't matter if they're dean, though white ml's are my big love, so if you got em, do em up!
I've been playing the guitar for a while now, and I began thinking about how embarrassing it is to be able to play the guitar decently, but not actually know much about music theory. A few days ago I decided to actually do something about it, so I logged onto Guitar Center's website and placed an order for "The Guitar Grimoire - Scales & Modes" and I must say that I'm very impressed by it's teachings.
However, I've been wondering if anyone else here in the Dean forums has had any experience with any of the books in the series and if they found the knowledge gained from the books beneficial to their playing.
I just started to actually study the book, and before I started to thumb through all of the scales and modes, I decided to actually take the time to read the beginning section of the book that teaches you how to actually use this book to your benefit. I'm now at the chord naming system and I'm understanding most of everything so far.
Does anyone else have this book or any of the others? Which one would you recommend to someone like me after I finish this one on scales and modes?
Thanks,
Shane

Amp - has anyone dealt with this guy?
When all is said and done, it appears a dovetail corner, hardwood, custom tolex speaker cab easily hits the $400.00+ range. These look to be decent quality, and the guy has great feedback...
Anyone have any experience with this guy? Some advice from someone with knowledge of cabinet construction? I was thinking about a 2x12, for my Dr. z, however the Z best cabs are $700.00 I don't want to make a mistake saving a buck - money's tight these days.

When I play a lot of power chord type shape...... My thumb starts killing me..... Anything I can do to strenthen my thumb?

anybody have a good tube or solid state amp that they would recommend for around 500 dollars
me love you long time?
How do notes relate to each other? As in how do you know how to play in key before doing so? I try to do it based on ear and what matches the notes in chords but I get some weird sounding results. I've never had so much as a half assed lesson on music theory if you can't tell by reading this and think that might help me.
No, really. It IS a fiddle:
This violin was made by my great-grandfather Nils Nilsen in Arendal, Norway in 1922. He made one for each of his six children. This one was given to my grandmother the day before she came to America in 1922.
The single string you see is the last remaining original string. I'm not sure what kind of wood this is made from. I'm guessing it's probably spruce. It is still a very aromatic wood, so I'm guessing spruce.
It is, of course, completely handmade/carved. The nut, fretboard and tailpiece all appear to be ebony, as are the tuning pegs. There are two small mother-of- pearl inlays on the tailpiece. The bow (which still has the original horse-hair) also has mother-of-pearl and bone inlays.
For an 86 year old instrument, it is in remarkably good condition. It needs a little re-gluing where the peg holds the tailpiece in place (there is a block of wood on the inside that has come loose). I wonder if Ben Chafin works on violins I don't plan on this being an regularly used instrument, but it would be nice to hear the old girls voice.
I'm just interested to see what amp setups people are using to get their sound.
Mine are as follows;
At the moment, i've only got a 15 watt peavey rage (but im gonna get a new amp soon) which i use with a Digitech death metal pedal. Pedal settings are:
Level: whatever is needed
Lows: full
Mids: halfway
Highs: Between 7.5 and 10
Amp settings:
Clean channel with 'Modern' setting and eq same as FX pedal.
Then whatever guitar i want to use (usually my razor v standard)
Next amp is probably gonna be a randall RG 100 (or 200) G3 combo.

Led Zeppelin Vs. The Beatles
by benpari on Mon Oct 13, 2008 8:11 pm
In speech class me and a friend are debating 2 girls on whether Led Zeppelin is better than the Beatles. I have the side of Led Zeppelin.
I don't really care what your opinion on the whole thing is, but I need help on coming up with arguments that are pro led zeppelin, and pro beatles(so I can rebut them easily).
I also need to cite sources. For example RollingStone magazine put Jimmy Page at #9 on their top 100 guitarists, and put George Harrison at #21. Regardless of how bad we all hate that list, I can use it in my favor....
The best arguments I have right now is that Led Zeppelin didnt have Yoko Ono, and the Beatles inspired Charles Manson
Thanks guys.

***Mixing tracks***----------------------Please Help Me Guys
Hey Guys,
i havent been on here much recently due to night shifts at work and University studies. i am in my final year studying Music Technology and we have just been given an assignment where i have to master 5 band recordings.
i have recorded 7 bands in my time in uni and they went pretty well apart from some members of my group having different opinions with mixing and adding effects etc...
So i am asking you all kindly if you have any cubase files or separate audio tracks of each instrument of your band/bands and are willing for me to master them for my current assignment.
if you could attach the files in an email that would be awesome

Amp troubles
by TF89 on Mon Oct 13, 2008 11:58 pm
so i havent had the chance to play with my Valveking until a few minutes ago and something's wrong my clean channel works fine, but, the lead channel has no distortion at all and there's a loud ringing noise coming from the amp. any idea what's wrong? thanks in advance
Why haven't we done this yet?
I originally wanted to email this in, but the email bounced back. Either way, this provides immediate feedback for the company to be able to analyze this idea.

Hello Dean,
I, as a member of Quest Musique, have been very happy to be a dealer of your guitars. Your company is a very diverse company (acoustics, electrics, basses with many models of each) but I see a potential opportunity that hasn't been included in your line. We have been impressed with your guitars, as have our customers, as we have ordered and continue to order many models (the Dave Mustaine Series guitars have been a great hit here as well as, of course, the Dimebag lineup) but one type of guitar that we haven't been able to get, from you or any of our other lines, is a solidbody electric guitar with P90 pickups.
I think your company could greatly profit from the addition of a
guitar with these pickups in either the Cadillac or Soltero models. A goldtop model in either of these lines with P90's would appeal to
many of our customers and, I believe would be a logical new model to include in 2009.
I don't think that a Gold top Caddy Select with P90's would even reach the sales floor of our store. I think one of the employees would snatch it up right out of the box. |
So, what do the fans of Dean guitars think of this idea?
Yay, Nay, Meh?

how can you say you're a huge fan of a band, when you've got nothing of theirs but stolen music?
"i'm a big fan of ________, but not enough to support them"
they say the bailout was a step towards communism, but i swear 95% of all music listeners these days are already there.
what is it that these people do not comprehend? do they know nothing of the joy of album art, and liner notes? or tearing open a fresh cd?
it's gotten so bad that the artists are trying to get money however they can, even if they have to screw their fans over to do so.
did you know there's a big bill that's going to allow musicians to get money for USED cds now?
wtf? did i get two paychecks for doing the same job once? HELL NO.
if i buy a used yugo, does the defunct company get a kickback?
Post a Picture of Yourself With Your Favorite Axe

Well, I'm really frippin board right now. I've been sitting at home for four days now, since I don't have a job, and my job search isn't going to well.(I could get a job a fast food place right now, but %$#@! that I hated working at Sonic and DQ, so I don't think I'd like it this time around.) So this is the best thing to do I can think of right now.
It's blurry, so frippin what. It did give me an excuse to finally by a Buckethead style mask. Best $2.99 I could spend.
First off, I personally never ship my guitars (or anything) via Fed EX. I only use UPS because after shipping dozens of guitars over the years I never had any problems what so ever. And I always request from sellers to use UPS. Sometimes they don't have access to UPS so they have to use Fed Ex.
So today I hear the Fed Ex truck pull up with a new/old Dean that I have been waiting a week for. I go to the front door and I watch in horror as the retard first drops the box off the truck because he was too lazy to pick it up and walk it down the truck steps, then he proceeded to literally bounce the box up my driveway by lifting it and letting it fall over and over. At this point I ran out and said to him "What the f-u-c-k are you doing! There's a guitar in there!" He says "oh".
The best part is the box is covered with "Fragile!" stickers, plus he was bouncing it on the heads stock end because the box was upside down.
Everytime I get something from someone via Fed Ex I have some problem or another. On this one they also screwed up the tracking info so I couldn't get the proper delivery date off their website and had to call repeatedly.
Fed Ex blows.
This looks like it may be a nice 7 string.

Best acoustic + electric songs
by milje on Wed Oct 15, 2008 2:19 am
What are your favorite songs that combine acoustic guitar and electric guitar?
For me, probably gotta go with Diary of a Madman.
Anyone use these for high gain tones? I just ordered a pair after reading a lot of reviews and after having such a good experience with Tung-Sol's 12AX7 tubes. Reviews said they're fat, warm, smooth, and detailed. Just seeing if any of you hard rock and metal heads had any experience with them. I can't afford to try out different tubes and the stores around here only stock GT and Mesa tubes.
finish idea.
by * on Wed Oct 15, 2008 4:23 am
i'd love to see dean do some old school hot rod/rat rod scheme (no the rust finishes don't count. lol.)
here's what i'd like to see incorporated into a guitar...
1. Flat black
2. some sick ass pinstriping
3. some old hot rod mascots. (maybe)
4. classic tattoo themes (pinup chicks, dice, spades, clubs, hearts, diamonds. spiderwebs, etc.)
not all these have to be on the guitar (how cluttered would that be. but i think if you took any 2 of these themes, and added them together you'd have a pretty killer guitar.
you get the idea by now, i'm sure.
i'd like a guitar that looks like what would happen if these beasts transformed magically into guitars.
i think there's a big market for this kind of badassery in an instrument (that really, hasn't been done too extensively.)
or maybe....a cool guitar with the evel knievel paint setup.

I have a decision to make , I have got clearance from the wife to spend $300.00 for my xmas present this year, and can't decide what I should get in the way of ampage, I currently have Randall rg75, but was thinking of getting Marshall microstack or just getting a cab for hook up to my Randall, I only use the clean channel on the RG cause I dont like the distortions on it, and use a rp 150 for my effect and all. So is the Marshall well worth it or would a cab be better?
Good pickup for E standard/Drop D tuning
Decided to put a humbucker in my Strat, but im not sure what to go with. I was going to go with EMG's but I dont want the hassle of routing a hole for the battery as my Strat is only a beater guitar. Im keeping it in E standard/Drop D tuning and i'll use it for thrash such as Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Slayer, Trivium and the like, so what pickup/s would be good for this setup?
Wiimote + Guitar = Pitch Shifter
Pretty cool stuff.

Amp Recording Tecnique?
by Graunke on Wed Oct 15, 2008 8:00 pm
I have some questions about recording my amp at home. I'm not getting tones that I want. When I record everything sounds far away even with the mic up close.
Here is what I'm using:
Carvin Mic (equvelant to SM 57)
Presonus Inspire Interface
Cubase LE
What I've done so far is just basic, put the mic up against the grill cloth, just off of the cone of the speaker. I'm not sure but for some reason some one told me that's where it goes.
what are your suggestions? I know I should just try different things, but I don't have that kinda time.............
Thinking putting the amp in the bathroom to record and closing the door. Real live natural reverb?

2 numbers from buying any guitar I ever wanted!
by Conbud on Wed Oct 15, 2008 9:52 pm
Long story short, I stopped Saturday morning to get a pack of smokes and even though I already had my tickets for the Week I decided to buy one Louisiana Lottery ticket. I just picked some numbers off the top of my head, nothing special. So I woke up Sunday morning and went to check my Powerball and Louisiana Lottery numbers, and as always.... Nothing!!!
I forgot all about the single ticket I bought that was in my wallet. That was until just a few minutes ago while digging through it. So I went to check my numbers and check this out... I ended up getting 4 numbers out of 6 straight!
Yep, just won myself $50 bucks and 50 more chances for winning the big one for this Weeks drawing!
But to think I was just two numbers away from being well off!
Why do people like crap music?
by milje on Wed Oct 15, 2008 9:56 pm
What's with people and crap music being popular? Personally, if it's on the radio, I'm most likely going to hate it. Good example, the new Kid Rock song, HORRIBLE! Can people not think for themselves and rely on somebody else to tell them what is popular this year? The other day I heard someone call that Kid Rock their favorite song of the summer, bet you don't hear anything about it next year or anytime after, while REAL good music stays popular forever. Heck, Cowboys From Hell is almost 20 years old now, and I still love the entire album.
Just wondering if anybody else feels like me, or if I'm a weirdo for seeing a little bit of myself in "Sandblasted Skin".
Pearly Gates
by JohnC on Thu Oct 16, 2008 12:17 am
How would a Pearly gates work in the neck position for jam band type music (ex. Grateful Dead, Umphrys McGee, MOE.)? I will be using the neck pickup for rhythm and leads. Will it work for what I need, or should I look elsewhere?
So I remember the stories growing up of old blues men selling their soul to the devil for greatness. I dunno. I am not a religious man in the least bit but watching Stevie play...... He is unnaturally amazing. I don't mean in an Yngwie or Vai kind of way. I mean he just had enough mojo in his fingers to make you really think...... Hmm was he possessed when he played? I know it sounds crazy, but man, how can one guy be that good?

Good Things Come To Those Who Wait
Hey everyone,
I've got a choice that I need to make that is causing me some trouble, and I was wondering if you all could share some wisdom with me. Of, if you are out of wisdom, a humble opinion would be greatly appreciated.
I can do one of two things. I can go ahead and contact one of our friendly neighborhood dealers here at the Dean Guitars forums and place an order for what would be my second Soltero Standard...or...I can wait until NAMM starts up and see what is going to be in the future for our favorite guitar company and place an order for something I might like when the new models release.
Thanks for you time!

My Franken-strat.....
by ianae86 on Thu Oct 16, 2008 2:29 am
Got this guitar probably 10 years ago as a cheap kit. My father (who's played as long as I can remember and for quite a while before that ) helped me assemble and set it up. It wasn't a bad guitar and I dug the custom headstock we did but after almost a decade it was ready for an overhaul:
The original look. After several staining attempts we decided to spray it orange:
Stripped down and re-painting process begun. It's an "almond white":
Assembled! and while it was torn apart I had the plastics division at the company I used to work for "dip" my pickguard in a snake skin wash. I couldn't have been happier with how it came out.
Closeup of custom headstock:
But that single coil in the bridge just wasn't cutting it. Upgraded to a DiMarzio DP182 and this is how it sits today:
And a vid of it in action shortly after completion. Ignore the lame "shredding", lol.

Thanks for looking! Hope you enjoy the little story And if you want to be a pal, please bump my Czech Dean Z (bolt on neck)'s FS/FT thread in the Trading Post:

Well in this picture Papa Het has a double neck explorer. Well the only problem with this is the screen I took is from Woodstock '94. However wasn't this guitar burnt along with James, in the pyro accident in '93. Nonetheless the guitar is pretty bad ass.

Which one? Help me decide!

I know this is a Dean forum so it's pretty obvious which one most of you would pick
I'm going to buy a new guitar soon and I'm not sure which one to buy. I've been thinking about ESP LTD SC608B or Dean Razorback V (black w/ red bevels)
So if anybody's able to share some experiences about either of these guitars I would really appreciate it!

Got a Basson 4x12 cab today.
I got a steal on a "like new" Basson 4x12 guitar cab today. I heard a few guys playing them, and they sounded killer, so I grabbed it. I have read lots of reviews and everyone that has one loves it. The thing is a tank. It weighs 106 lbs. This is the cab right here...

Help me turn my Dean Slime into a player
pros:
awesome looking Dean
wild sharp V neck profile
LFR works perfectly, stays in tune
light on the shoulder
all set up to my taste now
cons:
light on the shoulder
not enough natural bottom end
I love this guitar, but because of the light weight "mahogany", I'm not getting no where near the amount of bottom end chunk that I used to get out of my heavier Korean Dean ML's. I have a Blacktooth Rebel on order, so that should take care of my passive pick up needs + it's Korean, so it should be heavy. I'm thinking of installing active pups in the Slime. It'll be running it into my Warhead for now. I've read that active's sound the same regardless of wood in the guitar. Is this true?!?
Can anyone sum up the pros / cons to emg 81/85, Zakk Wylde 81/85's, KFK 81/85's, 81/60's, Blackouts, Duncans, whatever. I'm sure some people on this board have run active pup ML's thru many amps including the Warhead.

Neal Moser!!!!!
one helluva nice guy. it is quite refreshing to call a custom shop and have the owner/builder pick-up the phone. talked with him for about 15-20 minutes about different guitar related stuff. seems they will no longer be doing full blown import guitars as it is not really working for the size company they are. Neal said they are going to be looking at making the bodies for the "import" series at the USA Custom Shop and then getting the necks from Korea. They hope to do this and still have the product be in the neighborhood of the current import prices. I am really considering getting one of their guitars. I got me some non-Dean GAS!
can anyone tell me what the body wood of the Warbird ML is supposed to be? I just picked one up and its way light and seems to be made of basswood based on the exposed wood i can see in the humbuckers routes etc.
thanks for any info!

Hey! How about some positive comments!
Enough of the doom and gloom, bitchin’ and moanin’! Give your mangina a rest and post something positive about Dean Guitars!
My contribution:
A bit of dichotomy, consider this a new and old revelation
I’m not much of a “vintage” guitar guy, but I did happen upon a pristine example of good ole’ vintage Dean in the form of an 81 Z in late 2007. I pulled that beauty out of the case last night, after a long hibernation, and tuned her up. WOW! I forgot how GREAT a well-seasoned hunk-o-wood and a hot set of pickups sounds like! Super creamy with unbelievable sustain. What a neck!!! The most perfect V ever to be massaged into three pieces of wood. A fabulous instrument from … dare I say … a better time? Ok… maybe not!
I placed her in a stand and reached for one of my all-time favorite current production USA Deans… my trusty natural quilt Soltero. Just opening the case and seeing her gives me the giggles. STUNNING to say the least! Cosmetics aside, simply plugging her in to my Rivera twin and striking an A chord just sends shivers up my spine. Such clarity yet with bone crushing authority, the note rings out.
These two totally different guitars, separated by 25 years, share something very similar. Care to call it Mojo…? nah. Too cliché. I’ll call it satisfaction. A sum of its parts, combined in a fashion that compliments one another in a very rewarding way.
No thread would be complete without the obligatory PRON!
my next geet FBD or 79 brazilla?? Help!
Guys i was wondering about some pros and cons on both guitars is it worth it to spend the extra cash to get the FBD or is the 79 just as good...
Thanks
OK, here it goes...
I was jamming with some friends and realized a few things. I am not as good as i thought i was. the stuff i know how to play takes forever to learn but when i get it it sounds good. My friends can play tons of stuff but they cant play entire songs. Can you guys give me a list of songs that are easy for someone in their first year to learn. If it had a cool sounding solo that is easy please list it. I want a ton of songs to learn just so ya know. If you you could keep it in the rock genre(metal, 80s rock, stuff like that) please do but if you cant then i guess it doesnt matter.
TC Electronics and Voodoo Labs
This is for people with actual real world experience. I just scored a new TC Electronics G Major and a Voodoo Labs Ground Control Pro to control it. I am going to be running it into my 6505. I won't have it till Monday so I have a few questions. Can I break up the effects loop chain so I can run the chorus, flange and phaser in the front end of the amp and then the delay, reverbs and EQ into the effects loop? Also I am going to be using the Ground Control to switch my amp channels but I don't know if it can do it right from the unit or if there is an add on I need to get. The description is a little shady. Any recommendations from actual users are appreciated. Below are example photos of what I got.

Guys I need your opinion now ...Yesterday I went to the local guitar shop were they have the two guitar I wanted to tried...
First : the Gibson Flying V Zakk Wylde
Awesome look , the access to high note his great , the price is really high ( 4600 $ ) , it sounds really nice too but the price is killing me , the spec are awesome and all...
Secondly : a Gibson Les Paul Standard 1958 VOS
Look nice but not as the V , I'm not crazy of the access to the high note who's more difficult than a V, the price is okay for this instrument ( 3109 $ ) the sound was .....AWESOME , the tone was incredible, but a les paul cherryburst I think and the acess to the high notes was confusing me a bit ....
What would you do guys ? I like both of them , both feel awesome ,
Here are the the pic and spec of them ... btw money is canadian money

Dragonfire pickups. Are they any good? Because I can get a neck, and bridge set that is based on the X2N for 30 bucks, and I'm wondering if they are worth the money.
i've searched, how do you get hardware dean
i've searched the forum, but imo the search function isn't that good anyway, tried all different combonations.
I need a black jack plate and nut for my input jack on my razor 255, the chrome one is tarnished after only a couple of months and black would look better.
I will change to black grovers eventually too probably, but i can buy those anywhere. I'll post pron when i get to it in a couple months, putting blackouts in it.
Will i still be covered under warranty even though i put a OFR and some new black hardware on, even if the jack plate comes from dean?
so guys, i have the chance to get a totally custom guitar made by a local guy for only $1000. custom shape custom paint any hardware.
i know i want 25.5 scale, 24 frets, and a pointy v shape. what v shape tho?
what do you guys think, micheal amott/fernandes v shape, king v shape, rhoads shape, or ltd alexi shape?

Is your wife/girlfriend/mother going to kill you if you buy one more damn guitar? Heh
vintage deans, early 80ish in almost horrid condition made in usa ml black or any solid color really with one ply binding for cheep?
its for a school project i think i can take a old guitar and fix it up like new for my project. but how often do those guitars come around
someone told me that some guitar companies have really old guitars in crap condition sitting around and don't ever do anything with them. any chance dean my have some sitting around that they would sell a kid cheep so he can restore it for a senior project?
Fellow Line 6 TonePort UX-2 Users...
I've got a quick question to those of you that own UX-2 TonePorts or at least a TonePort that has at least one mic plug in it. I've been thinking about buying a mic and a mic boom stand so that I can use it to mic my amp when recording leads.
I love the UX-2 for rhythm, but that's about it side from the other basic things such as a metronome and tuner.
The reason that I want to do this is because my leads don't come up well on the UX-2 plugged directly in, so I thought if I could mic my actual amp that the sound would come through better. Can I actually do this or should I not waste my money on a mic and mic boom yet?
Thanks,
Shane
Will there be a Dean USA Stealth???

some nice looking guitars also as well as necks etc.

What's your take on expensive guitars?
by AhsanU on Sun Oct 19, 2008 12:40 am
I've been wanting a Dean Razorback V Skull for quite some time. And within a few months I'll have the sufficient funds to purchase one, but I'm having second thoughts.
The guitar is 4 thousand dollars and I'd feel extremely terrible if I ever chipped it or if anything were to ever happen to it.
I know guitars are meant to be played and not to be show-cased. I know PLENTY of you have expensive guitars and I'd like to hear what you have to say about this:
How often do you play it? I know you take extra care of it because it's more expensive but at what cost (such as: you don't play it as often as you'd like because of the risk of denting/chipping)? Looking at this guitar just makes me want to shred it apart (not literally, of course!) but I'm also afraid of denting it or putting marks on it.
Wrote a song with koto and strings
by Brendan on Sun Oct 19, 2008 2:55 am
Basically, I wrote a song with koto and string ensemble on guitar pro, so don't expect amazing quality link to song http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6986079 unfortunately not guitar related, but I play bass (close enough ) and it is music related and I hope that will suffice.
Updated version (Another string part, timpani, and choir.)

I'm about to cancel my subscription. I actually should have done it a long time ago, but I didn't.
I'm really tired of seeing all these Kurt Cobain and Jimmy Page articles. They seem to ride Zakk, Kurt, SRV, Hendrix, and Jimmy Page's ass REALLY hard.
Any other good magazines I can suscribe too? I'd like a guitar magazine with a lot of good gear reviews and interviews that actually go somewhere.
Can anyone tell me a reliable way to differentiate a USA from an import Tropical Dean?
Over the years I have heard the USA's are good quality, and I see them for sale from time to time. Currently there are some interesting (and bastardized) Deans on Ebay. Some from '96, an interesting pink baby ML that someone put a lame trem on, and a "custom" tropical caddy - bolt on...
Can someone school me on some of this? BLoyd brutha, you out there?
Girls Night Out

A bit of a guitar maintainance day today. I also keep telling myself it's time to sell a couple of guitars. I don't have a USA Dean and would really love one. But each time I pull out a guitar for the chopping block and polish her up. Put new strings on her. Give it a little set up. Next thing you know I'm playing it for the next week and I can never bring myself to sell one. So today I figured I'd pull most of em out line em up and then try and give one the ax. Funny thing is I knew the photo was missing 4 guitars that are not at my house but I realized after posting the photo that I forgot my Jackson Kelly & another black ML in the other closet. I had to study the photo for a few minutes and counting them thinking... Hey what's missing. Anyways long story short. I couldn't pull the trigger on one to sell again so I'm just giving up. I'm gonna quit tourturing myself. So here's the bulk of em' Getcha pull... Kev
To bad today [well yesterday depending on how you look at it], wasn't. Trade with Red Dragon gone smooth, SKB Case, Epipone LP, money for shipping to him, Ibanez Fuzz and Digitech Death Metal pedal. Awesome deal!
Cool board.
Crap shots, color badly off.
The true use for guitar cases
Life may be going down hill for me, but my guitars are great. Only problem with this guitar is that upper registry and me don't work well here. Hands a bit too big.

Christ Inversion!
by rridner on Sun Oct 19, 2008 4:13 pm
The official release of CHRIST INVERSION's self-titled recording is set for October 28th on Housecore Records. I personally have been waiting a long time for this to come out. I have both the demos and am absolutely thrilled that this band is seeing a proper release. This is my favorite "Underground Anselmo Project". Cannot wait!
Christ Inversion features:
Philip H. Anselmo (DOWN, PANTERA, SJR) - guitar/backing vocals
Wayne Fabra (GRAVEYARD RODEO, NECROPHAGIA) - vocals
Jay Gracianette (SINKHOLE, HOUSE OF SHOCK) - bass
Gary Herbert -(Graveyard Rodeo) - drums

Metallica Likes Death
by Bullet on Mon Oct 20, 2008 1:38 am
So Metallica has written aprox. 100 songs(well 99 to be exact), how ever some form of the word death has appeared in 81 one of them. Leading to believe James Hetfield likes death. Here is a compilation of such claims.

Hey everyone its been awhile since i've been able to chit chat up on here (have visited a few times but not for long) i been busy
So don't destroy me if someone has already talked about this.
But i was wondering what some of you guys thought about PRS's new Starla model.
And some of you that are my buds know that i'm a singlecut/les paul style body guy guitar player dude
I'm actually diggin the Starla
The classyness to it, i really like it. I can't wait to hit up GuitarCenter and check it out.
Has anybody played it?
Tell me what you guys thing
I was thinking about some of my favourite guitar sounds today and thought it might be cool to hear what some of you guys think are the best sounding guitarists out there, not in terms of playing, strictly in terms of tone, even if it was only on one song.
You don't have to list them in any particular order all though you can if you choose, and it doesn't have to be Metal or even distortion tones, list country or acoustic players if you want.
10 of my favourites in random order
1. David Gilmour
2. Old Metallica Rhythm tones
3. Eric Johnson
4. Brian May
5. Angus Young
6. Tom Scholtz (Boston)
7. Old Scorpions
8. Van Halen (brown sound era)
9. Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits)
10.Disturbed's rhythm tone on the Sickness album.

Really tortoisey tort pickguard
by Lon on Mon Oct 20, 2008 2:15 pm
Picked this up off ebay last week (really wanted the pickups) and I gotta say I've never seen one quite this color before. Not sure if I'm diggin it or not, but it's different! No maker's mark on it. I'm building up a black MIM Fender Strat body and this should look nice but I'm just not sure.....
