what's the buzz?
by meticalman on Sat Nov 01, 2008 9:40 am
I just put a bill n becky xl500 bill lawrence in my bridge and a dimarzio in the neck.

When i hit the G or B string there is this buzz that rings out, don't know how to describe it, it is not fret buzz, it is driving me nuts.

i put foam under my floyd springs, i checked the headstock and tuners.

It comes through the amp, i have no clue where it is coming from or what it is?

Anyone got any ideas, oh i also checked the control cavity, i'm about to stuff that with foam or something to see if something rattles in there but i doubt it.

could it be a bad string?? cause it's the G and B only it seems.
I never had the problem when i had my emgs in, now new pickups new buzz?
Dilemma! Worth upgrading?
by _koppen on Sat Nov 01, 2008 5:09 pm
I currently own a Line6 stack, wich consist of a 4*12 cab, and a Spider III 75w head.
I have been thinking now for quite some time to upgrade the head to a Spider III 150w head.

Any thoughts of that? Will there be a diffrence enough worth the money, or should i just keep what i have and be happy?

I really hoping for some help here guys Cool
Eli Half rack Analog delay
by bassmantim71 on Sat Nov 01, 2008 5:57 pm
Anyone ever heard of this (Eli half rack anolog delay)?

A local dude is holding it for me as he is selling a bunch of gear. I like the idea of an analog rackmount delay. He says it works perfectly, and can do many fast delays, just no long stretched out delays. And NO, it is not the vintage MXR flanger doubler in his listing, that is what I had originally called him about:

Soundtech PA System 150w, 2 mic ins, 2 inst. ins. rca in/out: $200

Ultimate support tripod speaker stands w/ extra tubing for keyboard stand: $60

Roland Tube Logic 30w guitar amp 4 5" spkrs w/ fx loop: $80

Peavey rage practice amp: $75

Fender Stage DSP 2 12" Celestions!(Preamp and dsp fx works fine power section does not): $75

Vintage Yamaha 2 12" amp, not working properly: $50

Vintage Bass Practice amp 50w: Preamp section wrks and sounds great, power section does not: $30

Vintage 50s Motorola all tube preamp, spring reverb, and power amp. Works but needs modification to use all tubes incl.: $100

Digitech rack multi fx/reverb true stereo: $60

Vintage MXR Digital rackmount delay/chorus/doubler/flanger: $35

Vintage Effectron Jr Digital delay/ doubler: $30

Eli Half rack Analog delay 2 channel: $80

MAM Analog Vocoder: $200

Apple PowerMac dual core 2.3ghz 8gb ram 250gb hd: $1200

Wobbly Floyd Rose
by FBDmichael on Sat Nov 01, 2008 7:07 pm
Hi, as you could probably guess from the title, I have a wobbly floyd rose. When I grab it and pull/push there is some slight play where it screws in apart from when it is done up as tight as it can go. Are they meant to do this? Will it damage the guitar?

Thanks.

Tried out the Matt Heafy ML, as well as the Schuldiner Stealth!

The Heafy ML's a pretty strange beast - I'm not totally sure if I liked it or not. The neck was a wierd sort of almost pasta bowl shape and was a bit thick for my hands at least. It didn't really turn me on at all. The pickups and he OFR are sound though - no problemo there. The thing actually looks SOO much nicer in real life, I'd be tempted to buy one if it had a better neck and more inlays.

Schuldiner Stealth was AMAZZZING! I couldn't believe it! It was really wee as well, I wasn't expecting it to be that small. Picked it up, plugged it in and ROAARRRR! The X2N on it was grunting like a hog on heat and sounded great through a JVM smashing out some old Death 'choons Cool

fretboard decals/custom inlays
by MarshallLaw on Mon Nov 03, 2008 4:25 am
it seems like a cheap and easy way to add some unique flavor to a guitar would be fretboard inlay decals... but i'm a little worried that they might effect my sound and/or the playability of the guitar... would they? please tell me about your experiences.

on a related note, say i wanted to get some inlays added to a guitar... just something simple, like getting them changed from basic dot inlays to blocks. how much would that cost?
Randall RX120RHS Good Pick?
by DRAGON REBORN on Mon Nov 03, 2008 5:47 am
Ok, I have decided I will be buying myself a christmas present by December.
And i wanna get a nice half stack for a nice price.
I don't wanna mess with tube amps at the momment, that can wait till prolly summer when i can work up enough money for a nice tube amp yada yada yada like a peavey 6505 or the Randall's MTS series amp heads ect.

Anyways, i've been checkin around, and i have always liked what i have seen with Randall

And for the price, i think this would be a good start for a amp. For it being $500.

So tell me, and i making a wise choice leaning torwards the Randall RX120RHS or not?

I think it is, but i want some of my buds from the forums input.

Good pick, or not?

Thanks

vinyl appreciation thread.
by * on Mon Nov 03, 2008 6:05 am
just want to say, guys (younger guys like myself in particular.) that vinyl is still king.

we started selling it at my work (only carrier in my area, and i kinda get to pick what gets ordered.

it's so neat to see so many great albums of the past, and new albums alike get put out on vinyl.

right now we've got in

Metallica -kill em all-and justice on 180 gram HQ

Just ordered some pantera for the store (Far beyond driven, great southern trendkill, and reinventing the steel.)

Slayer-Christ illusion, Haunting the chapel, seasons in the abyss, etc.

the cure-bloodflowers
black flag-everything went black, damaged, loose nut
Kiss-alive

things i ordered for myself

Misfits-die, die my darling
D.I. team goon.
Circle jerks-Group grox (limited edition hot pink vinyl. looks amazing.)
Joy Division-Unknown pleasures
Big Black-Songs about frippin
etc. etc.

i've ordered 20+ albums.

so, i know everyone here is wondering...what's the big deal anyway? is it really different? if it is so superior, why are CDs all the rage?

well, let me start by saying...

Cover art. same as the CD counterpart usually, but you know, BIG. much more fun to look at, and the Liner notes almost always have lyrics sheets, and are just more fun.

it's fun to watch the record spinning, it's fun to hold it in your hand.

now...the sound. it DOES sound warmer. i'm no engineer, but how it's been explained to me is that vinyl is the real sound wave (the round wave, best i know how to explain it.) whereas CD is a digital approximation, a "square" wave.

plus...there's just a cool factor vinyl has that you don't get with CD. it's superior. imo.

So i wanted to learn a new song yesterday and decided to take on Pantera's Avoid the Light. I had learned bits and pieces of it before, but wanted to learn the whole thing. So here it what i have so far in the link. Still have a lot of mistakes and am still working on getting the solo right, but I really enjoyed learning this one. Here you go, welcome to contstructive criticism, but not about the tone, because i'm not using my amp, just my toneport GX into audacity.

Wah Wah Questions
by Warn3rv3 '83 on Mon Nov 03, 2008 12:54 pm
I've been looking at reviews for about 3 weeks now on various wah wah pedals. MXR makes a crap load as well as the thousand other vendors who manufacture this stuff. I owned the original cry baby wah about ten years ago and to be honest i don't remember being too impressed and recall the tone being sucked right out of my amp (not that a peavey 212 HAD any tone). I've been hearing great things about the Dime wah but i keep seeing them all over FleaBay which makes me wonder how good they really are. There are thousands of signature issue wahs and reviews are only as good as the people posting them and there's no way to tell what differentiates these other than fancy knobs, graphics, price, and other non-wah related add-on. Yes, i know i should try them but i'm out of country and even when i get back I don't live near any music stores, so try before i buy isn't really an option.

What are you all using or planning on selling/buying? How do you use it? Do you keep it on all the time as a boost or only use it for leads solos? Do any of you have your wah's modded and if so, would you recommend mods? If there is a wah that also happens to have other features but is still a great wah please feel free to share. Anybody have any thoughts if any wah's are better for rock metal vs. jazz etc? Also if there is a comprehensive up to date comparison chart with all these wah's on it (which i highly doubt) please provide the link.

Thanks for your input!

Respect,
Joe

New Squier Bullet upgraded with a loaded Mighty Mite HSS pickguard and Wilkinson tuners. She's getting a white pearl pickguard but other than that staying just as she is. Amazing playing Strat, and these things are STOOPID cheap. They're going for $99 new at the stores, and these upgrades were about another $75.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=190263156906

I almost started getting buyers regret immediately... But I couldn't help myself... I had the money and the amp was almost exactly what I needed. I sure hope it turns out ok.

My parents are gonna be sooooo pissed that I bought this instead of saving up for a laptop. Laughing

Any opinions on cool tones for this one? I've read up, and the only basis for tone that I have is Dimebag plus 80's hair metal. Which sounds like a good thing, so far.

Also, MXR Vintage 6 band or Reissue? Or do I even need an eq for this amp?
fonky wrist pains.
by * on Mon Nov 03, 2008 6:44 pm
i get this aching, shooting pain in my wrist, right around the big carpal bone furthest away from your thumb (the one that sticks out quite profusely.

could this be carpal tunnel, or could it be ulnar nerve damage?

most of the time, it's local to that area, but if i turn my hand just right, i can feel it all the way to my elbow.

the funny thing is, it doesn't hurt when i'm playing. it's when i stop that the pain starts.

what amp?
by FBDmichael on Mon Nov 03, 2008 7:46 pm
sorry i know i some of you might be bored of this question. i need an amp which has a good distortion for metal kind of songs but with also with a decent clean sound. it will mainly be used for recording and if i do gigs it will obviously be miced up so i dont want it to be any less than 30 watts. i want to spend about £300 (around $500 i think).

any suggestions?

Went to see slayer last night and partly trivium.

Gotta admit i wasn't too sure about seeing Amon Amarth and mastodon. But amon amarth were great they really got me and the my girlfriend hyped up.

Trivium kicked ass and were really friendly ( we were against the barrier in the front )

Pualo ( there bassist gave my girlfriend his sweat band )

And to top it off....i caught jeff hanneman's pick.

But overall this thread is about how amazing slayer still are.

I have seen them every tour they have played in wales since 2004.. I have missed alot before my time..but slayer are still kicking ass.

SO kudos to slayer ( if you appreciate them )

thanks.

Search engine's and guitars
by '87 sherwood on Tue Nov 04, 2008 10:34 pm
I'm curious if anybody uses Google or Youtube or even the Dean website to research gear. Personally when I want to know something I search and watch videos and read reviews and specifications until I'm sick of it. Than I'm ready to go for a drive to a bunch of music stores "gasp". Shocked

By now I have narrowed down what I'm looking for and the sound I expect to achieve. I have money to buy the gear too. Otherwise all my research was wasted. Why would I spend hours researching and not have money. By the time I have money something new is out and I have to research again. Time management.

All year I see 4-5 threads a week asking questions that would be otherwise clarified immediatly if the thread author used some common sense and at least made an attempt to narrow their choices or look up the specs. Is it that painful to read a review, watch a short video or look at the Dean website and check the specs before posting a below 70 IQ type question?

But for some reason it's kind of difficult to alternate pick fast on this guitar. Riffs like Battery and One are real difficult. So would a higher quality bridge help? Like one off a Gibson?

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I just can't think of anything else I could do. Confused

Good deal on an RG-170es

Just picked up an RG-170es for $199... from GuitarCenter no less!

Great shape, sounds and looks killer.

Goes to show there's deals out there if you look hard enough, or stumble across them! Laughing

Anyone else have one? I've never seen an rg-170es, just the century 170.

Hey guys, well i have a dilemma...i love the way the emg 85 sounds when you go down to the 1st 2nd and third strings (everyone that has experienced emgs should know what im talking about) and i would love that sound for my southern cross but dont want to switch to emg's, any other pickups that could imitate that sort of sound?
NEW AMP(s) DAY!!!

o.k.,i am now an official "zao wannabe"....

first off,i got this LABOGA MR.HECTOR head in a trade for one of my randall v2's(still have 2 left). best trade i ever made....so far.

Image

this thing sounds great!! it does have some stupid design flaws. no switch to turn the effects loop on or off. if something is plugged into it,it is on. no presence knob, either. and the damned handle on top does not lay flat...you cant put anything on top of it. but it has one of the best midrange voices i have heard.

next up,is the isp theta head. i got a great price on it...thank god, because so far i cant dial it in.

Image

it has everything. one of the coolest things it it has a pre-amp to each channel. the top row of knobs is the clean, the bottom row is the gain channel. this is a true tweakers head. i will need to have more time with it to get something going. boost for solos, digital reverb(and with buck waller from rocktron behind the design, you know it is decent). it has 2 parametric mids for each channel...kinda cool. built in decimaters for each channel.

stay tuned....gonna do a amp fight soon.

Where to find Dean ML stop tail piece?
by Azzau on Wed Nov 05, 2008 5:26 am
Hi I'm new here.

Would any of you's know where to find a gold Dean ML stop tail piece? A gold one?, and I need a tune-o-matic style bridge but you can get those pretty much anywhere.

I have looked all over the net. I'm trying to gold out my Dean ML X (I know, crappy guitar but it was the only thing I could afford at the time, and plus over here in Australia a lot of Deans usually cost more, (Usually Double!) It is way hard to find any Dean product that has a price that isn't over inflated.

So, any Ideas?
Thanks.
what strings do you use? and drop b tuning
by FBDmichael on Wed Nov 05, 2008 9:22 am
hello, at the moment i use gibson strings but i wondered if there was anything a bit more stronger as i seem to break them fairly easy with the floyd rose. could anybody recomend some good durable/strong strings?

also, how the hell do you tune to drop b with a floyd rose? iv done it several ways but i cant do it without having the floyd rose about 1-2cm in the body. is there a way to do it without this happening?

thanks

what would it be, for you, currently? the quote is from "walk the line" by the way.

Metallica 11/4 Denver
by The Swank on Wed Nov 05, 2008 4:58 pm
My ears are still ringing from the Metallica show last night, and I thought I'd give a little run down of how the show went.

First was The Sword. Just saw them last month on tour with Clutch, and this performance wasn't much different. The songs are pretty good, though I don't care too much for the singers voice/style. Their live tone is pretty lacking. From my vantage point, I saw that one rig was an Orange guitar head, couldn't make out much else. There wasn't much energy to their show, just playing and headbanging.

Second up, Down! Good set for sure! Phil dedicated Lifer to Dime, they also played Bury me in smoke, N.O.D, Stone the crow, Temptations wings, The path, New Orleans is a dying whore, and probably a couple more I can't recall ATM. Good sound, good energy.

And finally Metallica. They opened up with That was just your life with a cool laser display. The center stage is back, and they used it pretty well. As usual there was plenty of classic Metallica, One, MOP, Sad but true, Ride the lightning, and they played the 2 songs I wanted to hear most that night, Last caress, and Damage Inc. Unfortunately, James' voice was blown out, he sounded like a 15 year in the throws of puberty. And there was a lot of sloppy playing. Lars completely F'd up the end of One, James couldn't keep in time during the chorus of Cyanide. Sloppy off notes during Nothing else matters. I chalked it up to, hey these guys are in their mid forties and it's a feat in itself that they are still playing at all. Good energy as usual from the band. I left happy. I'm sure any of you seeing em later on this tour will have as much fun as we did!
How much would this cost to get done?
by DRAGON REBORN on Wed Nov 05, 2008 8:55 pm
Ok, just an idea, but i've been thinking.
I would like to have my 7 string Hellraiser with a Floyd Rose on it, but its a string thru body.
So, say i bought an Original Floyd Rose Tremolo and i wanted to get it put on there.

How much would that cost for them to cut up my guitar to lay the sucker in there? I'm sure one of you on the forum have done this, or at leasts knows my question.

Line 6 Pod Pro (Rack) or GNX3
by bsmith on Wed Nov 05, 2008 10:15 pm
Can anyone shed some light as to which one would give me better tone options (mostly hard rock/metal/heavy metal)? I just jam by myself and am currently running my GNX3 through a home PA system (GNX3->mixer->500watt power amp->PA speakers). Since I don't jam with anyone I have no need at the moment for any 1/2 stack or high powered tube combo.

I'm basically just looking to get some good tones from amp/cab modeling and was wondering if the Line 6 products are any better than the GNX stuff. I know I can go try them out in a store but I can never really tell while I'm there. I'm currently getting some decent tone out of my GNX3 but I always feel like it could be better/tighter. I like to play anything from old rock up to modern metal and I think it's the modern metal stuff that I'm having a hard time dialing in. It never seems tight enough.

Maybe I just need to spend more time tweaking the GNX??? I was just wondering if anyone on her can shed some light on which one is better.

Thanks!

Thibnking of making 'shred' guitar lesson website..

I'd like mucho mucho feedback.

I want to make it entertaining yet informative. I notice a lot of dudes with sites are pretty serious, even to the point of being boring.

What levels should there be? What should I cover? How long should each lesson be? Should I look all metal? How many camera angles? What would help my site stand out more than some of the other guys? Would farting into the camera be cool? Do I swear? Do I not swear?

Any and all feedback welcome. I'll take it all in.

Thanks for your time.

I'l also continue to do the ones on youtube, as they're fun and I get a kick out of it.

FEDex delivered this a few hours ago. I've been playing it non-stop since I got it, but figured I should take some photos of it.

Here my thoughts on it -

The import Solteros are KILLER guitars. It could pass for a U.S. guitar until you look at them side by side. As nice as this import is, it doesn't compare to my similar finished U.S. Soltero #25.

The fretboard is flatter then my other Solteros. so in ways it plays a little faster.

The frets are a little edgier then my other Solteros, still they still feel good. The frets are slight larger on the import.

The pups sound pretty good. Much better then I thought they would. I prefer my pups to be a little more mid rangey, so I'll probably swap them out. These sound good though.

The overall feel is closest to the newest U.S., the spalted one.

My only complaint is that strap button system. It sucks. That's coming off asap. It may work fine, but it looks terrible.

Overall I'm very impressed. I expected a good guitar judging from peoples comments and it's better then I expected.

recently ive really been wanting a fender strat, which is funny because i allways thought that was the last guitar i would want. Ive just been wanting a more versitile guitar for different styles of music and stuff. I really like the american deluxe hss strat and i was wondering if any one had that guitar, or a similar one and if i could hear their opinions of it. My main concerns about the strats is the radius i am used to playing is a 16 and im worried about playability, also im wondering if the roller nut is good because im worried the tremelo that it has would make it go completely out of tune

Set list? or Wing it?

It's pretty laid back. People gettin loaded, me drinkin beer, and jammin. It's a solo show with the occasional percussionist.

I want to start to write music again.
I used to do it a little bit but i quite
right before school started.
I wasnt very good at it but it got me to play longer and that is why i want to do it again. It helped me practice more because it was more fun and more challenging because you werent just looking off of a paper of stuff already written. It was written for you. Now that i gave you a whole entire book on my thoughts(lol Laughing ) Ill get to my question. Is there anything that you would suggest to me about how to write music? what i mean by that is, Is there any articles that would explain this to me? What should i do to get started? Is this something that just comes with experience? When you guys are writing insane riffs what do you do? How do you write a riff? Do you listen to music for inspiration? What is your process for doing this and coming up with things that sound good? Explain what your process is? How long should it take for someone to develope a good song? I know there are a lot of questions but i really want to know these things. Thanks for any of the help i get!

i have the option of getting one of these exceptionally cheap, in the fullstack version and i've heard nothing but good things and read a few forum reviews as well, and i know that a few forum members are owners, and a few were owners for a period of time. i was wondering if those that own them still think highly of them and the original awe wasn't the only thing about them.

i am really drawn to this head because with its lower wattage it gives me a chance to really push the tubes without obnoxious volumes, deffinetely not gigging much these days, and most places around here to play have a pa for mic-ing amps anyways. from what i've read it is an incredibly loud 20 watts, but i was wondering how these fair in a jamming situation with a drummer and a bassist?
would just the 2 12's be fine or would it become a situation where for jamming i would need to have a seperate amp altogether?

thanks for anyone who can help me out, i've been looking to get a better quality amp for a few years, i've been running a marshall 100mgdfx and i must say i bought it because it said marshall on it, but i was young and not as gear savvy at the time. it's put in 5 years of service though and deffinetely shows.

Pedal order Q's..again
by atarilovesyou on Sat Nov 08, 2008 5:31 am
....so, it's been a while since I've given this topic much thought. I'm now using some pedals and effects that I haven't in the past, and I know there's guys here who know quite a bit about the order.

Just so you know, I'm looking for the typical setup...I know, there's no 'right or wrong' way to hook up pedals. I'm looking for the basic stuff!

So far, I have to incorporate these pedals:

Wah
MXR Phaser
MXR Distortion+
Whammy pedal
Chorus
Flanger
Decimator noise reduction
Analog Delay
Digital Delay

....and that's the 'order' I'm thinking about. Guitar into the wah, then phaser, then distortion pedal, then Whammy. All that into the front of the amp.

In the effects loop: Chorus, Flanger, Decimator noise reduction, Analog delay, Digital delay...back into the loop.

So that's what I'm thinking. I was kinda confused with the order of the front effects...where the Whammy goes, where to place the distortion pedal (I always use my amp's distortion, but I use the MXR for my Randy Rhoads tone).

Any ideas?...or does my setup look good? I've read some conflicting stuff on google...namely, where to place the wah, before or after the distortion box (I'm thinking before, that's where I put it when I use the amp distortion).

....finally, don't worry about the tone suckage of my rig, as I have that problem solved Cool .

Thanks in advance!

Yup i know they got alotta albums before those two (been a fan since The new Order) but those latest two (not counting first strike still deadly) keeps kicking me in the nuts!

Indonesia... the new China.
by Borock Yomama on Sat Nov 08, 2008 4:24 pm
Seems like lately a lot of guitar manufacturers (Ibanez, Washburn, BC Rich, Fender, etc.) are switching their Asian built guitars over to Indonesia and abandoning China. Mad

Why don't they just stop dicking around the consumers and just go straight for the very bottom of the barrel and move all overseas production to India?

Opinions on Indonesian built guitars anyone? Smile
Trying to find an OFR....IMPOSSIBLE!
by millertime on Sat Nov 08, 2008 5:00 pm
So I just called 5 music stores within 30 minsutes of my house, trying to throw my money at them and bring home an OFR for my 79ML-f.

2 of the stores are national brands, Long and Mcquade and Steves music for any canadians, and a couple of local shops.

Steves told me they have not seen a single new bridge or any parts in 2 years, and all others were offering Schallers or other licensed prducts.

Can any body point me in the direction of a retailer of an ORIGINAL floyd??

Ok....I need some help. I just got my 1984 Gibson Explorer back from the painter. Yep. Solid white.

Do I go with the "Ride the Lightning/Master of Puppets/Garage days" Duncans (Distortion and Jazz) or the "...and justice for all EMG's(81 and 60)?

I really like both sets and was definitely leaning towards the Duncans....but then I laid the EMG's in the guitar and it just looked so right.

Help me decide and you will be rewarded with pics of the finished product. Very Happy

Actually, I guess it was yesterday, but whatever. It's pretty much NOS, as our buddy Faust bought it and just sat on it until he sold it to me. I STILL love the Czech pickups, whatever they are. It will be getting a new nut soon enough-the stock slots weren't wide enough for the 11-49s I like. I immediately jumped in with both feet and widened all the slots...the D TOO much...oh well. I just got my files and I guess you have to learn sometime, right? Laughing It's still playable, just that one buzzes a bit at the nut. Just a hair low. Anyway, these are amazing guitars and I so, so, so regret selling my purple to Mika. This is my consolation prize, and I have to say I'm happy with it! Still 2 pc Mahogany, 2 pc solid maple top, all Schaller hardware-top shelf. Better pics will be forthcoming when I'm not so lazy. Enjoy, all.

The colour of the White/black Razorback V?
by Larsson on Sun Nov 09, 2008 2:02 am
So i'm in the mood for another guitar. This time, i'm looking at the White/black Razorback V, wich is pictured here:

http://www.deanguitars.com/dean_winter_07/razorback_v_enlarged.htm

I LOVE that dirty and a bit darker white color! However, i found a guy on Youtube playing this thing, take a look here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kHUpKjEtCo

Now notice how the white color in the video is much more "clean" and whiter then on the picture.

So, if anyone on the forum got one of these, does the the guitar looks like the one in the video or in the picture? Chance is that that guy in the video got a custom guitar.
Sacrilege short scale bass

So,I made a friday night hippie speedball (a hawg's leg and a pot of coffee) and got rolling on another project that I wasn't at all confident about but actually came out pretty well so far.I bought this ancient japanese kingston short scale bass on ebay about a year ago for about $40 shipped and attempted a neck repair but that went badly Embarassed But whatever,I bought it to screw with and learn something, mission accomplished.

I also bought this Korean made Dean bolt on neck cut for a locking nut about the same time as a replacement neck for a project Ibanez in need of a neck repair(which worked out very well, thanks to the lessons learned on the kingston's neck).Once I repaired the Ibanez's neck,I had the parts but not the balls to actually try this until last night.

I checked the scale, and it is correct but the neck has an extra fret and is a bit wider so some hillbilly routing(a Miracle Blade kitchen knife, hammer and flathead screwdriver) and a bit of carving on the pickguard were necessary.A file and some sandpaper cleaned things up nicely.

Next,I glued and clamped the nut then got started on the tuners. It turned out there was only one decent tuner left from the original neck so I had to use it on the low e and stole a few mini grovers I have lying around, just to see if this thing was going to be playable.

I finally got everything lined up,bolted down, strung and it actually plays fairly well although a set of real bass tuners and a replacement bridge are called for.The action is about 1/8" beyond tolerable with the stock bridge bottomed out.The saddles are also just crap, as the strings can be aligned evenly but tend to move if i really dig in with my pick.

Overall,I had a pile of parts along with time on my hands and ended up with something I like.I hope you guys dig it too.
This is just badass!

Any of you guys with back catalogs (relearning old songs)
by Bucketass on Sun Nov 09, 2008 5:50 am
Have a hard time relearning old material that you wrote and recorded, trying to play it exactly as you recorded it over a decade ago or even a couple years ago? Laughing

I found way old cassette's (mini reel to reel's in a plastic case for the noobs) of my old bands from 89 and 93. Man it brought back some killer memories of opening for Fight (halfords band) and drinking penga with the Sepultura guys.

Kinda weird but some of the songs I haven't played since 95, i played like I played it then, some of the riffs i had to relearn but man what a blast from the past!!!!

what pickups?
by Adio_stack on Sun Nov 09, 2008 11:57 pm
so im trying to figure out specs for a possible strat build and ive got all the specs down except for the pickups, im lost here.

the body is gonna be ethier mahogany or alder and the pickups will be H/S/H.

I want a good thick and chunky rythem sound, zakk wylde type leads and still be able to pull of a nice almost acoustic clean sound.

amp wise im using a 6505+ with a boss super chorus to thicken up the distorsion and improve the cleans, i also use a crybaby from hell to boost my solo tone.

I might also add to my rig an mxr gt-od or the zakk wylde od.

Guitar Set-Up Frustration
by FearCage on Mon Nov 10, 2008 3:13 am
I woke up yesterday morning and plopped the ol' Soltero Standard on my lap and started to play when...PING...I began to get some serious fret buzz from the 1st to the 7th fret on the three wound strings.

I asked my father about it, and he noted that I might need to either adjust the height of my bridge or change the strings.

Well, I did both...and it's still there.

I've been searching online for some clear instruction on what to do about my problem and I've only become even more confused on the correct way to diagnose my problem and fix it.

I've had this problem many of times with other guitars and I've always ended up giving up and letting my father fix it, but as one of the articles about this subject have read, the time comes in every guitarists life when simply being able to play the guitar just isn't enough...

Could I get some clear direction from someone here?

Thanks!

Rack Gear recommendations
by Benthic_Pig on Mon Nov 10, 2008 11:28 am
Hey folks,

I thought I would post this here as this board is visited frequently.

I'm after some advice on some decent quality rack gear; specifically EQ and power units. My budget is ~£200 for the EQ or the power supply. I'm mostly after an EQ.

Does anyone use rackmount EQs that they could recommend? There's so many on offer that i'm a bit confused. I've seen an old MXR 30 band for sale, but I might go for something more modern.

Basically, it only needs to work with my guitar and I like to play with dials.I dont really need tons of input sources and stuff for keyboards etc (although if its there i'm not going to be put off). I'm not scared by uber crazy dual channel 30 band EQs, they sound fun, I love to tweak my tone. Currently I have a 10 band; i'd just like some more control.

Any suggestions? I've seen a few BOSS and MXR ones, i'm wary of Behringer and some makes i've never heard of.

What about a power supply? I'd kind of like something that can run DC and AC (eg my whammy pedal). I got recommended a rack PSU from forumites before but I can't for the life of me remember what it was.

Mega thanks!

by BLOYD on Mon Nov 10, 2008 8:42 pm
I’ve only owned this a few weeks and yet to figure out all the nitty grit stuff so, I figure I could save some time asking here.

I’ve recorded two guitar tracks for a song. I need the final version of these guitar tracks to include a click track. Initially, when I started recording I set them up with a metronome (record & play setting) and everything recorded and played back fine…no probs. However, when I mastered these two tracks (into a wav file) the click track doesn’t carry over. Is there something in the setup I need to change…like assigning the metronome to a track?…or does it just not do that and I need to add a drum machine to simulate a click for the final output?

I can't find too much information on them online, so I was wondering if you could help out. I need some info on the Soltero Standard, what kind of neck does it come with (a few sites say V neck, but they also talk about the MHG in the description). Are the strap locks that it comes with any good? Are they similar to Schallers or will I want to replace them? If you order it off the internet, does it come with a case (Same Day Music or similar), if not, what kind of case will I want to be looking at?

Perfect guitar (for you)
by Lon on Tue Nov 11, 2008 9:26 pm
Everyone knows I'm a huge gear whore and have been through more guitars that many of you have ever even seen. USA, Japan, Czech, other imports, etc. I've built probably 25 partscasters as well, loved them all. WTF am I talking about? Right now I have 2 guitars that I just can't touch, similar but different, and both absolutely perfect for me right down to the colors. NOTHING about them would I even think about changing at this point. My Squier 51/Strat hybrid has gone through many aesthetic changes...new MIJ mid 80s Squier Strat neck and all black parts. Everything about this guitar is black but the frets and strings. It's a HS configuration and I've always been so happy with the stock pups that I've never thought about changing them. The neck fits my hand perfect and the frets are just right. Love it! Just last week picked up a slightly modified new Squier Bullet that has upgraded Mighty Mite HSS pups and Wilkinson sealed tuners. Everything else bone stock and Dead Perfect! I haven't even changed the strings, I'm afraid to! Never held a guitar that I liked more than this. I've had a few that I liked as much, but they were FAR more expensive guitars. I keep them both in my office and play every day these days. Used to be there were times I'd go a week without picking up a guitar, but not anymore. I play at lunchtime every day for about 45 minutes and my playing has really improved, almost up to the Crappy level. Razz Here's a couple of pics.

Shim
by Vilches3 on Wed Nov 12, 2008 12:55 am
When you shim the neck of a guitar to be able to pull back on a non-recessed floyd rose.........Do the strings still go out of tune when a string breaks? and is a non recessed floyd also a pain in the ass to intonate and tune? thanks

Holy crap is that song hard. the first thre and a half-ish pages are just the intro. it is insane. I will get as much as i can though. the solo will take FOREVER to learn. it is great! if you are into megadeth like i am and you want to get a book like this one then get this one! it is like 15 bucks. it rocks!!!

Building a 2x12 Cab - Suggestions/Help
by classic_rocker978 on Wed Nov 12, 2008 5:16 am
Okay well right now im playing through an avatar 4x12 and I wanna downsize to a 2x12 and I'm contemplating building it myself. I need opinions on what everyones favorite open back cabinet for Heavy blues/classic rock/hard rock.is because I need dimensions for the cab. Im thinking either g12h30 + V30 or g12h30+greenback combos in it. I want a really full "3-d" type of sound from my 2x12. So gimme your pick for a "fat" "full" sounding cab with an open or semi open back for the genres I listed. Thanks alot guys!!!

I was also wondering if carpeting the outside of the cab would have too much of an effect on the tone as it would be much easier than tolex.

Then I said "Screw this!!!!... I'm going back to Rock n Roll at it's finest. Guitar wah amp. So F'ing chew on that!!!!"

Then today I bought a Boss Chorus CH-1 or something like that on E bay. I sure hope I don't get sucked into all this crap again. Should be here in a few days me thinks.

New guitar day (NDC) Steinberger
by '87 sherwood on Thu Nov 13, 2008 4:23 am
So I needed a guitar to take overseas that is strong and don't compromise in any way. This guitar is full scale and has a graphite channel and obvious active electronics. Its actually pretty heavy (think Strat heavy). Playing in the seated position is very comfortable. Standing is taking some getting used to. I may modify the upper strap thing by putting a slight back bend in it to allow the guitar to lean forward a bit. Its angled slightly back now so I can apparently "see the finger board" as Ned Steinberger says. I don't need to see the finger board so I may move it. I stood for 40 minutes and actually got used to it so I may leave well enough alone.

The fit and finish are great. The phenolic fingerboard played like glass and in very fast. It has a nice C necl similar to my Strat. The pickup don't want to adjust so I turned the pre gain down on the clean and all was fine again. The guitar sounds huge and has excellent sustain. The padded gigbag is well made and the tuners are super sensitive at 40:1 ratio. I tuned up at the shop and its been in tune all day regaardless of the new strings. I meeasured the distance from the nut to bride on both my Stealth and the synapse and its exactly 25.5". I may have forgotten something so ask question by all means. Here's the obligatory pron. A video will follow this weekend. I'll likely do Slaughterd on the DKMLF as well. I recently had wisdom teeth removed and have been pretty sore lately.

Jimmy Page
by jimihendrix1117 on Thu Nov 13, 2008 9:57 am
Can someone tell me why jimmy page is seen as a guitar god??? i wont deny he was a GENUIS in the studio, but EVERYTIME ive seen him "at his best" its never really that good especially compared to cream era clapton and jimi. his feel wasnt that great at all, his vibratos (when he actually did them) were like standard at best, his bends were OK. Ill give him credit for his tone, but its nothin more than standard LP tone at the time. IMO Tony Iommi was what jimmy page should have been cuz they had similar styles but Iommi was consistant and better in pretty much every aspect. so can someone please tell me what the big deal bout his actual playin is? im not bashin him cuz i actually WANT to like him, but IMO hes far from guitar god status...
guitar strap height rant...
by tommygd on Thu Nov 13, 2008 11:03 am
I saw a band last night and they were great. However, one of the guitarists seemed to be having trouble with his guitar (a Dean ml79) He seemed to suffer from a nasty case of illwearmyguitarlowcositlookscooleventhoughicantplayitlikethat-itis.

Everytime a solo came along he would lift the guitar up, wedge it in his crotch, bend over like he was evacuating his bowels, and eventually played a bit of lead with the fret board up by his head!

I believe people should wear their guitar how they like, but you should wear it where you can play it. For the last 25 years I have had my guitar fairly low and that works for me. I have friends who have it so high they can almost rest their chins on it.

There is a video of the Slash on youtube somewhere 'shredding' and he puts his leg up on the kick drum so he can have his les paul at a more comfy height! What is it with people?

Do you guys play high or low? Can you play an ML high without looking like a dork? And who is brave enough to admit they have illwearmyguitarlowcositlookscooleventhoughicantplayitlikethat-itis?

end of rant (apologies, my drummer refused to listen to me last night and kept telling me the drummer needed a higher stool!)

Woah!

For some reason, everyone says SS amps thin out and sound tinny at high volumes?

Well, mine is the exact opposite! I played at a party without a pedal, and yes, it thinned out at the optimum level of 6 on my 15 watt, but now, with my Zakk Wylde pedal, I'm playing on 3 in my house, pretty damn loud, and the tone is clear and beastly!

I don't know how to explain it, is this normal for my pedal to make it sound "Good"? Confused Razz

BBE products - which one?
by Benthic_Pig on Fri Nov 14, 2008 8:57 pm
Hi folks,

Been looking at some gear recently and i'm surprised by the prices (not as high as I thought).

Basically, does anyone have experience with the rack mounted BBE sonic maximizers?

Namely the 828i and 428i and the 362.

What is the main actual difference between these units? Is the 828i overkill for a simple Rig?

I basically run 2 x 150w warheads in stereo - would this need balanced jacks? (Im a bit confused by this term).

Also, does anyone have experience with the EQ systems? I love EQs, but ive seen a Peavey dual 31 band EQ for similar prices that looks awesome. How do the BBE products compare with other brands? They arent that well known in the UK so I dont really have much to go on except the well biased harmony central reveiws.

I've also noticed that the compressor comes with the sonic maximizer onboard - does it work ok? anyone use one?

Wow, just looking for e/2's and came across this gem. Oh Brandon, where are you???

Most people are familiar w/ the Ibanez models but this predates them by a year or two

I played one of these years ago and they are KILLER guitars. The pups are more like the old Gibson '57s hence lower output but great clarity

I almost wonder if Dean Z got the idea for the V headstock from this very guitar and thought, man that is gross but if I made it just a little different...

Small Claims Court and Stolen Gear
by Graunke on Fri Nov 14, 2008 11:20 pm
So, this is my story. I'm thinking of taking this guy to small claims court. I know it's not much, but it's the principle. It's my gear, and he stole it.

Have any of you dealt with small claims court? How do you do it?

Here's the chain of events that I've taken down. Unfortunately I haven't figured out dates of any of this stuff, because it's been dragging on for so long.

I Dropped off some of my gear at “Music Supply” owned and operated by (name removed for the time being)
Some gear sold, and I received payment from Charles, then purchased equipment from Charles.
One item remained, a Line 6 AX212 w/footswitch and manuals (amplifier). I visited the store one day, and the amp was gone. Charles stated that he took the amp home to try it out. On another visit, Charles stated he would be purchasing the amp from me. I can’t recall the agreed price. On another visit, Charles stated he did not have the money to purchase the amp yet. I told him that was fine, catch him next time.

On another phone call, at a later date, Charles said he didn’t have the money to purchase the amp. I asked if I could pick up the amplifier. We set up a time for me to stop by. When I arrived the amp wasn’t there. We set up another time to meet. This continued to happen for a few weeks.

Music Supply closed doors for business. Charles did not reply to phone calls and e mail/myspace messages to his accounts requesting payment or return of my amplifier. About a year later, when running into Charles at a bar, I brought up the situation. He said the amp was in a storage unit of another former band that he was playing with. He said he was having a hard time getting access to it. Said he would get it and we would be in touch soon.

Months have passed since then, E Mails have been sent, after getting contact info through mutual friends to try and remedy the situation. I’ve been ignored completely on this issue.

Any advice? Am I screwed because we didnt have a written agreement for him to sell my gear?

by Blind Theory on Sat Nov 15, 2008 12:50 am
Ok here goes, A few of my buddies and i stay after school and jam in the band room with a drummer from germany(we ae in colorado) named yannik. Yannik owns hard core. anyway, we came up with a new guitar game. We pick teams of two and then try and out jam eachother. after that we played guess that riff. It was awesome enough as it was. Then this kid levi said we should start to shred and make stuff up on the spot. the 2 best out of the group(levi and lazaro[kinda]) were able to come up with stuff fairly easy. lazaro loves EVH so he made something that sounded a lot like eruption. It sholdnt have counted. Then it got to me and my friend geoff. He did kind of good. I was not good at all. I got the idea that we should do the shred competitions all the time when we get together after school. I think if we do it will be a great opportunity. It could help my improv immensily. I just thought it was a cool story so that is why i shared it. Thanks for reading!!

Yesterday I posted a link to Rondo Guitars, it was removed promptly by a moderator, and I received a waring message stating that "I have violated forum rules" by posting the link.

Now is it just my imagination or do other people also notice that pretty much every day on here people are posting links to other guitar manufacturers or gear makers, or posting pictures of newly acquired guitars/gear built by companies other than Dean, etc?

So if I'm understanding this properly, no one should be allowed to mention anything else on here other than Dean Guitars or products put out by Armadillo? If that is the case, then 70% of the posts on this board need to be removed.

What am I missing here? Shocked

And while I'm here, what do you guys think of the pinkburst cadillacs, like, what are they like from stock, my friend, who is actually very manly, want's a pink guitar. I of course had to find a Dean solution to this and he loved it Cool

Duncan Distortion pair or Distortion / Jazz for Caddy......
by boombazilla on Sat Nov 15, 2008 7:13 pm
Need a little input from you guys.

How do you think a Duncan distortion will sound in the bridge position of a Caddy? I'm primarily looking for a solid modern rock sound, nothing too scooped.

What about the neck? Duncan does a matched bridge/neck set of Distortions, is the neck version any good or should I go with a Duncan Jazz for the neck? Will the output balance be a problem with the Distortion/Jazz combination?

Bill Lawrence Pick ups.
by DOA 1012 on Sat Nov 15, 2008 9:57 pm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I learned something and how many of you know or knew this and what is some of your opinions of this.
This would be the so called Original Bill Lawrence Pickups. I bought two from this website to only have a friend say that they were fakes.

http://www.billlawrenceonlinestore.com/

My friend told me that they were fake. This is the guy who is named Jzchak Wajcman. His pick ups seem to have a thinner magnet strip and a red wire and plastic housing. The Originals have a thicker Magnet strip and a Blue wire and a metal housing.

http://www.billlawrencereview.com/L-500

I suppose Im the only one who didn't know this? According to the BL pick up history at no time does it state that the ones I bought are fake. There just seems to be the two people being Wajcman and Bill Lawrence separating and going different ways in the late 70's or early 80's. Wajcman claims to be the founder of Bill Lawrence Pick ups and Bill I think says different. I think Im going to order the metal one with the blue wire and compare it to the Wajcman model.
This is where we can order the so called real McCoys.

http://www.wildepickups.com/How_To_Order.html

So...what do you guys know regarding this?
It's a bit interesting.
I've Had my Diagnosis...
by Greg... on Sat Nov 15, 2008 10:01 pm
So I went on the hunt for amps today. (All of this is IMO!)

I originally went to play a Peavey Vypyr 30. So I got my V out and started playing around with its trillion settings and functions, Man! it was confusing...

I played through the 6505 channel and it was harsh, distorted in harmonics, and just a bit of a rubbish sound.

And that's the best of it tbh, I tried the XXX, Triple Rec model, Krankenstein, JSX, all very disappointing. Sad I played the Vypyr for around 35/40 mins.

So I told one of the guys and he said that I would like a Peavey VK112.

So he comes back with it and lets me play it for around 30 minutes. I couldn't coax a tone out of it that I liked. Sad

So at this point I'm thinking, wth? So I described the kind of tones I loved and he said what I needed was to save for a Peavey 6505/+ with any Cab I liked best.

So at some point next year, I will hopefully have enough to get a Peavey 6505 with an Orange PPC212 or a Marshall 212, but I'm hoping I can get Mesa Cab, because I love their bass response. I will look out to get a used Peavey Head and some sort of Cab.

I know you're going to say it's a bit of an excessive choice, but I think this is the best route. I love the sound of Peavey's live/ on records. And it'll be giggable unlike the 6505 combo, man that thing ways like, 60 kilos! Shocked Laughing

Any way, if anyone has any recommendations for Cab's with 6505's or 6505+'s I'll keep an eye out,

Thanks

Greg...

Put a Baker Act in my Strat.
by BradWorld on Sun Nov 16, 2008 1:50 am
I had gotten a Baker Act pickup a while back and never installed it in anything. I have been playing some tuned down stuff recently with my new band, and the shorter scale of the Deans I own leaves the strings a bit too floppy for me. So I have been breaking out the Fenders. But they dont really cut it sonically. So... I installed a Dean USA Baker Act pickup in my trusty Stratocaster. Here are the before and after shots. It is not completely done yet. I have to get new knobs.

This is the before shot. I like the look of the tortise shell guard, but it has been that way for 15 years. So it was time for a change.

Image

I was going for a little bit of a Jake E Lee look with this... I hope you like it. It sounds incredibly bad-ass right now. That BakerAct pickup is a screamer. Cheers!

I just got back from the show and it was literally the best concert I've ever been to. Nothing came close to their stage presence, granted I haven't seen too many old school bands like AC/DC live. Their performance was great, and I really had an awesome time! My ears are still ringing because I had one of the floor seats. Absoloutely love this amp, its like being kicked in the teeth by jesus. The tone just blows me away through eveyone one of my guitars (rb, cadzilla, usa redwood). it has a really warm beautiful clean sound aswell as a gnarly trebley distortion LOVE IT!!!

Seriously throw your Randall out the window and get one of these!
only flaw is a lack of foot switch atm Sad.

I was playing this bitch for an hour and a storm came over, I thought "epic, storm and loud guitar, I'll take the risk cos it's just so god damn epic". It was epic until the power cut out and I thought the amp had blown! Laughing Laughing Screamed for 10 minutes then realised everything else had turned off, but everythings fine with the amp now Very Happy
Weight comparison of Razorbacks and ML's
by Larsson on Sun Nov 16, 2008 1:38 pm
Hello!

I've got an Razorback 255 wich i love above everything. I do however think my Razorback is quite heavy. I can't play it standing up for too long without having to take pauses.

So i wonder, how does it compare to an ML? I am mostly thinking about the ML 79 and the ML FBD.

I'm also wondering about the weights on Razorbacks V. They should be less heavy cause there is less body on the thing. Smile
Went and saw MAB tonight..
by DougFCKNSteele on Sun Nov 16, 2008 2:15 pm
I took the little lady, and I gotta say, the dude rocked. I was expecting music and minimal chit chat, but the guy's really funny, had everyone in stitches..

"...because two is divisible by METAL!!!" Lot's of horns by MAB, I tells ya.

He played for about an hour and a half, talked in depth about how he came up with the over under thing, His Dean signature series guitar, spoke highly of a lot of his peers (Randy, Dime, Tom Morello, the Trivium guys, Gary Moore, etc.).

It was really informative, his tone was great, he was right on the money..and then he busted out the double guitar. My wife almost had an O when he did a tune with that..

So.....after he played (and went backstage), they were setting up for him to go out and sign autographs and whatnot, Alex Bolt, Australia's Dean importer, tapped me on the shoulder, told me to bring my wife, and led us backstage to meet MAB..

MAB is a really nice guy who loves music and loves sharing his musical knowledge with people. He congratulated me on being the only guy in Oz still left in the Shredder Search Comp, which was cool. I shook his hand and said,"I got all my Angus Young pentatonics down.."

I thanked him for his 1st video (Star Licks, totally helped out my alternate picking at the time), and we talked about the black Jazz 3's, and I was telling him about the sharp white 1.5 mm Tortex picks. Oh, and he doesn't like the Jazz 3 XL's.

I introduced him to my wife, she was a bit star struck, which was cool, and then Alex said, "Welp, it's time for Michael to sign some stuff." So we shook hands again and split.

We giggled like girls all the way to the car.
Dean Guitars board game *version1*
by bassmantim71 on Sun Nov 16, 2008 3:56 pm
Hey,

Like alot of you, I play board games with my kids..., not to mention, a good board game with friends and a few beers can be fun. I had an idea for a Dean Guitars board game, a version of snakes and ladders. 100 squares, and when you land on a Dean Guitar --> you move up the grid. High-end models have the longest guitar necks: so you move further up, low end models (with a short neck) move you up the board a little bit. Now here's the fun part Smile :

When you land on a guitar from another company--> you go DOWN Laughing Good guitars like a BC Rich take you down a little bit (adjust the length of the guitar neck again), and real crappy guitars like First Act send you shooting way down the board.

If anyone can help create this, I would like it if everybody here could print the game board on 4 sheets of paper and then tape it together. You could then print it on printer friendly cardboard or photopaper. All you need is one dice, and some coloured guitar pics to mark your spots on the board. Instead of coloured squares on the board (as a background), a faded Dean Guitars logo with wings would be cool!!!

What do y'all think? Can anyone here help make this happen?

EDIT: If Dean ever jumped on this (hello Elliot), it would make a cool gift for customers. Young and old would be dreaming about "getting thier wings". Rough concept:

I got scammed on ebay.....what do I do?
by Powerglide350 on Sun Nov 16, 2008 5:17 pm
I sold an old Ibanez body to a guy. I described it correctly and said it was sanded down and was a project. He gets the guitar...freaks out that it is beyond help and says it is firewood.

I refunded him the full amount. Now I have no money and no guitar. I have asked him repeatedly for over a month to send it back...and he says "Why, so you can scam somebody else with it?"

I returned his money so in my opinion he stole the body. So what do I do now? I shipped him the body through Fed ex.

Hmmmm....

Jaco Pastorius once told Joe Zawinul (Weather Report) that he was the greatest bass player in the world. An unamused Zawinul told him to "get the f**k outta [his] sight."

Jaco maintained he wasn't bragging, just stating the facts.

Given, Jaco was great, but Stanley Clarke, Tony Levin, Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, et al, could as well lay claim to being the greatest in their own right but have simply let their fingers speak and the fans decide.

Ear plugs / Hearing protection
by Vekin on Mon Nov 17, 2008 1:18 am
Maybe I'm just getting old but I kinda notice myself saying; Huh? and What? more often than I used to. As well as seems the TV needs to be a bit louder than before. I'm thinking maybe all these years of loud music is starting to take it's toll. When I jam with my band it's pretty loud. My ears will ring for hours if not the next day. I love the loudness but know I am doing harm to my hearing. I have played once or twice before with your typical foam ear plugs but I remember it just sounding muffeled to me.

Do any of you use ear protection when jamming or playing live?
If so any recommendations on brands.
Are there any that are still protective yet do not alter the sound to the extent of the foam ones. I'd like to find a happy medium while I can still hear.

Finally Somewhat Finished a Project
by Bullet on Mon Nov 17, 2008 3:30 am
Well anyways, I'm sure you've all seen my Frankenstrats before, but I finally got around to adding a maple on maple neck, to my red, white, and black one. Here is a picture of the guitar in the before times, then the a before pic, and finally a somewhat finished pic. The only thing left to do is eventually add a floyd/locking nut, and a better bridge pickup. So here it is yet again, because I love showing off my guitars. By the way before anyone mentions it, there will be a b and e string on it tomorrow. I broke the b string stringing it up, then I was too lazy to put the e string on it.

Strat type tremolo setup Q's
by atarilovesyou on Mon Nov 17, 2008 7:10 am
I'm reading all different things regarding the setup of a Strat's tremolo.

I hear they're supposed to float somewhat...that the trem isn't supposed to be flush to the body. I have a Yamaha Pacifica that has a similar bridge, but all these years I've set it up so that the bridge doesn't move.

Now, I'm considering picking up a Strat, but I want to know if setting the trem up to float is going to be a headache...both in terms of setup and tone. And tuning...I'm going to assume that you get a bit of the Floyd problem where unison bends sound a little 'off' because as one string goes sharp, the rest go flat?

Is there a middle ground?....Is there a way to set up the bridge so that you have tuning stability in case one string breaks, yet not need to bolt the bridge down so hard that the bar becomes a real pain to dip?

Any comments from Strat owners would be really appreciated.

Fender Jim Root Telecaster
by Inuyasha259 on Mon Nov 17, 2008 8:16 pm
Hey dudes just to give you some info in a little review of this bad boy, no pics as yet both cameras are broken so a review will have to do,

Body:10/10 real nice and comfortable, its a little heavier than a regular tele as this one's made of mahogany, the neck is the usual all-maple. the body's rear contour fits my body nicely so its real nice to play seated and it balances well when on a strap. the colour is flat black. and the bridge is my kind of bridge its a hardtail bridge the kinda fixed vintage trem without the trem

Sound: 8/10 one word HEAVY the two EMGs pack a real wollop (a 60 in the neck and an 81 in the bridge) though it doesn't have the same versatility of say the mexican baja tele (with the special switching) but that just adds to the appeal to me as i was needing something simple and to the point for some shows i've got to do in a few weeks. also adding to the simplicity is that theres only one volume.

A,F, & F: 9/10 the Action is nice and low so you can play nice and fast, the parts are all Fitted nicely the schaller locking tuners are a nice touch means i don't have to spend more money on sperzels coz these ones work just as well, and the Finish is impeccable, real smoot black body colouring and the neck is nicely done too, the black model comes with an all-maple neck while if you get it in flat White you get an ebony board.

Overall: 9/10 REal nice instrument all in all, only slight quiblle is it could be a bit more versatile but thats to be expected with EMG's and only a single volume means the tweaking scope is minimal at best but still, i can get over that. This guitar is recommended for just straight metal. I love it i think it might appeal to some of you guys as well.

It was a pretty cool show though, anyone watch it?
I laughed at what they did at the Van Halen show with the fans. Laughing

Wylde Overdrive, how do i use it.
by meticalman on Mon Nov 17, 2008 10:45 pm
Ok i got a wylde overdrive today, and i'm thinking i'm going to take it back tomorrow.

I'm a metalzone kinda guy, and i run my metalzone through the clean channel on my mg100 with 1960A 4x12 celestion 75s.
It sounds great.

I bought the wylde overdrive to just use the output as a volume boost, but that didn't work, plus makes things sound like crap.

then i ran it through the effects loop, on top of the crunch channel, i tried it all front back, it never did anthing i liked. I'm getting a Carvin v3 in a couple months, should i keep the wylde overdrive?
I hear it only works well with tube amps.

I need some sort of straight volume pedal so i can get a boost for my lead parts with my band. What kind of pedal is just a clean volume boost without coloring or effecting my tone.
Randall Warhead
by DOA 1012 on Mon Nov 17, 2008 11:14 pm
I have a straight up question...
1.Are the Randall Warheads really any good?
Ya know,... are they worth buying? There is this guy who is selling one and I am just wondering about mixing it with my 5150 III head?

Does anyone here own one or ever had one in the past I would like your thoughts on this.
Thanks

by Twenty23Three on Tue Nov 18, 2008 12:14 am
this is just sumthing thats been bugging me, i keep seeing Jag Panzer's two tone soltero everytime im going through the forums and it makes me weak at the knees and i want that so bad. However sadly dont have deep enough pockets for a USA and i was thinking even though they are differnt finishes if i blacked out a standard soltero in transbrazila burst...would it look the same..because i always thought trans brazilia burst and the vintage two tone looked the same...
please mock and correct me if needed
(im so tempted to put sumthing non dean in here just to get at that borock yomama fool!)

ok, so...
I have not entirely gathered the money for the purchase of EITHER of these instruments, but I am in somewhat of a dilemma...
I can't decide what will be my next guitar purchase!
I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, either:

The B.C. Rich Chuck Schulinder Stealth Tribute (The $1000 variant, mind you)...
or
A Black/gold Edwards LP...

I have played guitars that are said to be of equal feel...
and, to tell the truth, I can't decide which feels better...

so...
which do YOU guys think is the better of the two (just curious)?

Found a nice Dean on the island!
by atarilovesyou on Tue Nov 18, 2008 4:08 am
Vancouver island, that is...

Well, it's a splated top ML with MOP inlays, and Dean logo...hardtail.

AND..a V neck!...and fatter frets than a regular 79!

AND!...it's an import!

AND!...it's like around 8 bills!....I was really surprised at how awesome it was. Strings were dead center.

Anybody looking for a VERY nice ML with a unique top that won't break the bank would do very well to pick this guitar up!...pm for more details.

Newb wah question
by Jimmy King on Tue Nov 18, 2008 1:58 pm
So, I've been playing since February and with Christmas coming up I've decided some guitar toys would be fun and at the top of that list is a wah pedal - something interactive rather than a pedal that I just turn on or off. Obviously I need to drop by Guitar Center and mess around with some myself, but I've got a question or two.

1) I've read some reviews, such as of the standard Crybaby that suggest that some wahs might be less good for heavier music than others. Is this really a concern or are these guys just idiots? I saw that comment specifically on the Crybaby, yet Dime used a Crybaby, although the Crybaby From Hell is a bit different from the standard, and as far as I know Kirk Hammet uses some sort of Dunlop Crybaby.

2) I "think" I want a really wide sweep. I play in my house, occasionally at a friend's house. I'm not really looking for something to just set in place for a specific lead tone, I'm looking for a toy to actively play around with, rock back and forth on, make annoying noises, and generally give some Kirk Hammet style abuse and overuse to. Any models I should specifically look at? Any I should avoid?

Photoshoppers - Some Advice?
by metalmessiah17 on Tue Nov 18, 2008 6:09 pm
Guitar related, don't worry Laughing .

I'm trying to do some work for both a limited run and also for a friend who is refinishing a guitar, and it's requiring me to add a flame maple top to a current image of the guitar I have. Where does everyone get their wood textures for flame-maple and quilted tops? I have a decent flame maple texture, but nothing nearly as good as some of the ones I've seen other people use. Most of the images I've been finding online have either been too low resolution or simply not a large enough image to be useful. Thanks in advance for any advice or pointers, cheers all!

So many Surprises! Only one dissappointment...
by SkinnyMan on Tue Nov 18, 2008 10:25 pm
This is a Dean ML 79' RANT YO! Cool Cool Cool Laughing

I'd just like to say, I'm so happy that this thing sounds so good, STOCK! The stock pickups are the sound I was looking for, so I don't have to spend extra for pickups! Shocked Very Happy

But the single, most awful dissapointment is... it's LIGHT. Crying or Very sad

This thing is about 9 pounds... I like my guitars 4 or more pounds above that. Double the lbs. and I'll be at perfect happiness! Shocked

And since it's kinda light, the guitar is neck heavy. So say it's free on my body, and I wanna zip up my jacket without taking the guitar off, well, the guitar is gonna go headstock first into the ground. Crying or Very sad

This is probably the only reason to stay away from Imports. I can't complain about the sound in the slightest! It's just too light... Sad

Maybe Dean can do something about it? Have light models, and heavier USA style models? Confused

Just an idea, and a rant... Cool Razz Post thoughts.

Arnsparger pups?
by Northwinds on Wed Nov 19, 2008 12:34 am
I just ordered a JS Custom Model for my '83 V. Wanted to try something different and these were recommended to me by my buddy Alex who was, until Kevin's death, was the lead guitar player for Quiet Riot. He plays PRS guitars pretty much exclusively but he has an older Les Paul with a set of them installed. They put out around 15 DC resistance for the bridge and around 8 at the neck. Not quite as hot as a Dirty Fingers but I can't wait to try it out

Anyone have any experience with any of the Arnsparger line?

Well anyways, I got my first cellphone today. I really didn't want it, but I need for my new job doing electrical work with my dad. So it it was plain black, which was well to plain, so I decided to stripe it up. Not to mention the the upper horn on a Razorback makes a nice holder for it. Amazingly it still works fine. After being covered in spray paint.

Need help: 1959 Eico tube HF12A amplifier
by bassmantim71 on Wed Nov 19, 2008 4:01 am
I just got off the phone with my dad, and he was thrilled to hear this amplifier play again. The story is: my dad was in my garage this summer and he says "oh, there's the tube amp I built when I was 17". I had no clue that I had a vintage tube amp, or hi-fi as my dad calls it, on my hands. He says that the amp came in a kit, just parts, a steel chassis (my dad built a wood chassis), and a manual. Front panel says 18 watts, but google says it's a very loud 12 watts. The 12ax7 tubes may be Sylvania Question , or some type of Czechoslovakian tube. I think the 2 EL84's are 2 different brands. Everything seems to work, tubes glow orange, pots are a tad scratchy when turned.

If anyone here has info for me, a link to the original manual, an explanation of how the tubes are configured..., please let me know. I'm playing my Washy-->Eico amp-->RS125CX cab and it sounds amazing. When I put chorus, of drive the front with my Korg processor, it sounds GOD-LIKE!!! Video coming soon.

noticed that bands like this don't get talked about very much on here. Who's a fan?

if you are a fan, i HIGHLY recommend

http://www.timelife.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=1001&langId=-1&productId=211613

TIMELIFE's classic soul ballads collection. great stuff. though, you could probably condense it down to 5 cds instead of 10, and it'd be the ultimate collection. i'll admit, there is some that i'd consider "filler" but there are so many amazing tunes on there as well.

Ok, I'm new to the whole tube amp deal, I bought a triple rect and am going to need to change out the tubes sometime soon. I know that you have to swap for the same number, 6L6 I have to put 6L6's back in, but I read on the net that some tubes are interchangable, 6L6=5881, etc..... . So my questions are, Are there any better brands of tubes?, and What tubes are better for metal? Very Happy All info is greatly appreiciated

L.E.D. lights in the 12th fret

I always wondered when someone was going to put lights in a fretboard with all the advances in l.e.d. technology:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6-D7zmRfwU

(he lights 'em up at 00:22)

I found this while looking at ENGL Fireball clips..., anyone know the exact model of this "Warrior" guitar? I've never heard of this guitar company. Dean should do a Razorback that has a Dean logo on the headstock and a razorblade in the 12th fret that light up. Probably look real cool on stage. If you could light up all the dot inlays, you needn't worry about the bozo lighting guys some venues have. I'm sure alot of you know what I'm talking about Cool
Soldering Iron Recommendations & Another Issue...

Hello,

I've been wanting to go ahead and switch out the pups in my Soltero Standard to some DMT's, but I don't currently own a soldering iron. I'm wondering if anyone here could possibly make a recommendation for one so that I don't go out and buy to complete wrong thing...

Also, has anyone heard from BRG Steve? The last I heard from him was a PM saying that something I ordered made it over to him safely, but I haven't been able to get a response to a couple of questions he asked me about the shipping destination.

NGD DEAN Custom V * My first USA guitar! Pron
by Vekin on Wed Nov 19, 2008 11:46 pm
Hey, New axe day for me. Scored this beauty from gtrplayr1976 He told me it was pretty much unplayed and I think he lied to me cuz I don't beleive it's ever been played. Wow is she sweet.
This is 1/3 of a 3 guitar custom order of matching V, Z & ML from 2004. I have tons of other Deans but this is my first US and it just feels like a million bucks in my hands! The edges of the neck, The solid feel. The flame top is unreal. Really one of the sweetest V's I have ever seen. I can't believe everybody stalled on this one long enough for me scoop it up. Thanks to who ever concidered buying it and didn't. Thanks to gtrplayr1976 for shooting it out to me so quickly. Great pack job. My band jams tonight so... If this baby has not been played yet. Twisted Evil She be gettin some lovin tonight fo sho. Twisted Evil

Needless to say I'm very happy to have finally joined the ranks of having a sweet USA guitar. It was too long of a wait.

On with the PRoN: Cold and dark out so no Natty light shots and the good cam is out for repairs so deal with it. Laughing Oggle on...

ESP Arming Adjuster *need 4 light tension springs*
by bassmantim71 on Thu Nov 20, 2008 4:34 am
Just wanted your thoughts on which way to place my ESP Arming Adjuster. This is ESP's version of a Hipshot Tremsetter. It's supposed to increase the volume, tone, and sustain of your guitar (without a "zero point" like the Hipshot version) by connecting the sustain block to the body of the guitar underneath the bridge pup. It is adjustable (push back spring tension) and will stabilize the trem during bends (double stop bends) and allow me to drop the low E string to D without making the other strings go sharp. I use DR Hi-volts tuned Eb. My goal is to balance the trem.

A instillation

unit centered / extra spring on the bass string side:
Image

B instillation

springs evenly distributed on sustain block / unit on bass string side:
Image

I've seen this unit perfectly balanced by centering it and using a 4 spring setup, but I find the trem to be too stiff with 4 springs and I am concerned about too much pressure pushing on the knife edges. It's a nice Schaller trem and I don't want to kill it.
