MIK Soltero - maple top or laminate?
Hey guys, was just wondering if anyone had opened up their Soltero Standard and looked for at the maple top? Anyone know if it;s just a laminate on mahogany body or is there a decently thick cap on it?
Did the search but too many topics to go through
Thanks

Despite the fact that title is stupid, you guys should come to Tiki
Well, I'm trying to take on Fight Fire with Fire by Metallica... and I'm pretty sure Kirk finger-picked the intro...
So any help would be good.
How would I do this chord, and similar ones?

Right now, I pick the Low E 3rd fret with my thumb, and open G and B, with an upstroke of the middle finger. Would this be correct?

If I get enough christmas money, I'm so buying one of those guitar straps + a bullet wristband!
Ok everytime my guitar breaks down i learn something new too fix it,but there is one thing i cant seem to get,HOW DO YOU SET UP A FLOYD ROSE im not paying Long and McQuade 30 bucks too set it up,but i dont wanna break it.
I got this from the Megadeth forums...ok here goes...
There is a magazine that has articles about how to play like (insert rocker here). The people on that forum decided to do something a little different. Here is the question....
If you had to tell us 10 things on how to play guitar like you do, what would they be?
Here is mine...
1)play as fast as possible on the frets above 14 and try to make it sound almost Batio-eque
2)Use alternate picking and string skipping in everything you write(It is the bomb)
3)Use hammer-ons/Pull-offs as much as humanly possible
4)screw around until you make something that sounds eerie and creepy yet insane
5)attempt to sweep pick(only happens good half the time)
6)use a wide variety of techniques, that when put together, is extremely hard and allows you to only play it while you are making it and not after you are done making it.
7)Have the hair(mine is almost to were i want it)
8)Have a sick guitar tone.
9)YOU HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO PLAY CHRISTMAS EVE BY TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA OR YOU CANT PLAY LIKE ME!!!
10)You need to have a certain amount of techniquality to your playing that is on a level below you comprehension(So low it might as well not exist)
A personal milestone for me...
I just managed to play 'Round 1' of Frank Gambale's Chopbuilder dvd all the way through perfect. Every note even, all in time, no f*ck ups, no warm-up. Just pick up the guitar, fire up the metronome and go.
I know that this would be easy for the majority of posters (judging from some of youtube/mp3 posts I have seen), but for me this is a big deal!
On to round 2...
Sorry, just had to share.

Hey brothers, I have a question that needs answered.
I am a pretty good tech, i do all the work in my circle of players cause i like it and don't charge. However, I've only been workin with floyds for about nine months. so i need help with something i would like to do.
I want to install an OFR on one of my ML's and replace the LFR. And the reason im asking is because i love the action right now, just hate the responce, and this is my favorite ML and second favorite guitar in my collection. she is my baby and because of that i do not want to fly blind and learn as i go.
So if any of you can give me tips or hints or a step by step walk through, or just tell me to have it done my a real pro, not a pro am like me, that would be awsome.
Much love to my broters as always
D.S.
So an aquaintance called me up at 5pm today freaking out because the controls on his ESP Eclipse stop working. So I told him to bring it over. After replacing the battery (I always do that when working on EMGs) I started to look into the issue. So all the controls stopped working. And it was buzzing something fierce. Immediately I thought, Ground problem. So I pulled the pups and re-seated the snap plugs and then looked at the controls. All seemed ok at first. He has the 2 vol 1 tone and 3 way toggle setup. I pulled the input jack and noticed that there was a missing ground wire. The one that goes to the tone pot. I asked him what happened? He said he was at a gig and it just went haywire and nothing was responding and it was just wide open volume. I asked him if he opened the guitar up? He said no. I believe him because he is a player but not a tinkerer. He has no reason to go in there and wouldn't. So I re-traced everything and found that all else was in tact and where it should be. I took a peice of wire, and re-grounded the input jack to the tone pot, gave him a setup and fresh strings and all was good again. OK so I am baffled. The ground wire just up and disintegrated? You can see where it was connected to the middle pin of the input jack but there was no loose wire anywhere in the guitar? He assured me he didn't open it for any reason since the last battery change a few months prior. WTF? Did the US Govt. attempt a UFO cover up by making his ground wire vanish to throw us off the track of the UFO? I have known this guy for a while and he has no reason to lie to me. He would have admitted to messing with it.

Guitar Rig 3 vs Amplitube
I've spent the past 5 days playing with the stripped down versions of Guitar Rig 3 and Amplitube.
I focused on 2 things - 1. How does it feel to play 2. How does it sound.
For point #1 - How Does it feel it play. I gave the edge to Amplitube. Modeling is getting very good but it still doesn't quite feel right to me. But Amplitube felt a little bit more 'real'.
But on point #2 Guitar Rig 3 totally blew away Amplitube. Amplitube sounded like an amp I'd sell to buy something a lot better Anyone that listened to Lannings Guitar Rig 3 clips knows the killer tone you can get with it. I'm using the LE version of Guitar Rig, it's very limited so I can't get that killer tone, but I know it's possible.
So I went ahead and ordered Guitar Rig 3.
I'm hoping I can automate the wah effects after I record the parts. That will be my first thing to try with the full version of Guitar Rig 3.
One thing that puzzled me was that the low-end versions of these programs seemed to cater to blues players. Both of these stripped down programs offered bluesy amp settings. That's cool and all, but I know very few blues guys and none of them would use an amp modeler. It just seems like bizarre marketing to me.
Wow, been some time since I've been here...
by Malek on Tue Dec 02, 2008 4:31 pm
Place sure is different, no more general discussion forum?
Ah well, I still have stories and perhaps some questions.
I moved from Flint to Detroit, went jobless, lost my gear.
I slapped up a deal with my old singer with my old rig (Warhead combo, dime wah, rack stuff) which was that he help me get it out of loan (was out of a band and needed temporary money) and he borrows my rig as collateral. Set no date for payback of cash, wasn't much at $150. But somehow got misconstrued that I said a month. Well....it was around that time that I attempted contact, and ever since I have only heard from him once in 8 months. Now this was 8 months after the deal and me contacting him twice a day at least two weeks out of every month, and there was all sorts of noise about screwing him out of money because I "waited too long" so he sold/kept my gear. What do you think, got a case there or what?
Besides that, I got happily married two months ago, and got a free Washburn Dimebolt Friend asked me one night at the bar if I wanted it, hard case and all, so I drove an hour to pick it up...and the headstock was broken clean off. Did some Frankenstein work and it is now fully playable and looking mighty clean
Other than that, what's been happening around here?
Odd Tuning Problem? (Not your typical one...)
Ok... so I like to play in E Standard, Drop D, Eb (Half Step Down), and D Standard...
So, my guitar holds tune VERY well in Eb, and D Standard... but In Drop D, the strings A, D, G, B, E, go out of tune a little bit or a lot, and in E Standard, just add the low E.
For some reason, my guitar likes to hold better tune in moderately lower tunings... Eb, while suitable for a lot of stuff I play, I don't play in Eb most of my time. I normally play in E Standard and Drop D... so it's crucial to figure out what's going on with this thing?
Are my strings slipping because of tightness? What gauge of strings do you reccomend, if that's the problem? I doubt it is, as the guitar originally came with 10 - 46, and is what I use mainly... and my other guitars don't go out of tune in E Standard/Drop D, with 10 - 46 strings...
I am truly baffled here, and would like to get to the bottom of this! Post suggestions, ANYTHING!
Thank you!
Gibson Firebird discontinued?
by Trashed on Tue Dec 02, 2008 9:15 pm
I can't seem to find anything on the Firebird on the Gibson site...
Plus the guitar store close to me that usually carries them has been out of stock for about 6 months now...
Anybody know anything on the fate of this model? I so want a Gibson Firebird V... At least I want to test one out...
Even the big internet stores like Thomann seem to be out of stock on them...
Been a while...New guitar (NDC), and a (possible) future amp
Well, It's been a long time since I've been on the forums. I've been having computer issues, but everything is good now. I got my first jackson a month or two ago. It was a crappy little js1 model until I fixed it up. I got it from my friend and new guitarist Damien.
Since I got it, I've upgraded the crap out of it. everything but the neck and body has been replaced. I removed the tone knob and moved the volume knob in its place too. It has the JB Jazz pickup combination and inlay stickers. I replaced the truss rod cover too. I want to get the neck painted black, I just don't know what to use to get that done. (Anyone know?)
I'm about to get a new amp, depending on how it goes when I try it out today or tomorrow. http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Peavey-Nashville-112-1x12-80W-Amp?sku=481387 (Anyone play or own the amp? Comments about it would be appreciated)
I'm about to put up some pictures (I know how it works on this forum) in a few minutes
I have an acting class and me and my buddy are to do a parody of a movie. Me and him(both play guitar) are going to do the guitar face-off at the end of Crossroads! Since it is a parody, we need stupid things to play.
What are some theme songs you know? (can be for a restuarant like burger king or a show) Please give as many as you can possibly muster. MY GRADE DEPENDS ON YOU!!!
Thanks in advanced!

I play Metallica/Megadeth type of music, with the occasional death metal type stuff.

E string buzz help plz!!!
for some reason my high E string on my dean 30th anniversary V gets this weird buzz when i play it on the 22 fret sometimes and when i play it open...it can also get random buzz in on other frets too...plz help me fix this...BTW, if i screw with the string and move it around by the bridge it stops buzz until I bend/play it...
I spoke with Steve at BRG today, and he's been swamped so he hasn't been on the forums in a while due to personal buisness. There are some things going on in town that Steve needed to take care of in order to ensure his buisness well being. Stever appoligizes for his absence and will be back as soon as possible. He also assures us that there will be great new things in store for BRG and more. So, give Steve a break, he needs it.

Alnico Guitar speakers.. Replacing my ceramics!!!
Well right now im running a detuned 4x12 with a g12h30 and a g12m in it. Doesnt sound bad at all. But ive recently become really interested in some alnico speakers. Especially the ones by weber and jensen as they appear to be more in my price range. I like the greenbacks but could use a warmer woodier tone. A little more compression and speaker breakup. Alnico should be the way to go as far as i can tell, but i very well could be wrong. Im running it through a modded Valve jr.... theyll be in a 2x12 and I dont mind mixing speakers. Lower wattage means more breakup and more response and interaction from the speakers. I like that. So preferably 25 or 20 watt or below... 15 watt sounds really nice. Would alnico be good for classic rock.. maybe some led zeppelin... black sabbath at the very very heaviest? Anyone have any suggestions as far as speakers go. Heres a few ive been eyeballing:

Any thoughts on the speakers or any other low wattage speakers that can handle some classic rock power tube cranked to the max balls out crunch just tell me id love to hear what you guys think.

Have wanted one of these for a few yrs. This will be my second Jackson ever. The last one I had was a Dinky w/ a reverse headstock, but that was over 10 yrs ago. It was shipped out to me yesterday. Expect mass PRON when it arrives.
What would you pick?
by fila on Wed Dec 03, 2008 4:38 pm
Okay so I'm probably gonna buy a Dean Black Gold. The problem is, the local guitar shop doesn't have one and I can only order one guitar from them. I think The V model is best looking, but I want to sit and play sometimes...
And the Explorer and ML are pretty equal to me, they both look really nice. So which one of these two would you pick?
Legit or... not so legit?

Hey guys, just seen that in TheeBay and wanted y'all to take a look at it. 51 squid is a little low for an amp like that, especially if it's new, what do you think?
If you guys give it the green light in general, I'll jump on that in seconds, it just looked a little dodgy. The guys feedback seems sound, but a few weeks ago I seen the same guy sell a JVM 50 watt head for just over 100 quid or so.
is it possible for part of a pick up to go bad?
it seems like all my stings play fine except my bottom e string which seems to play considerably quieter than the rest.
(NDC) I wonder how Dean plans to compete with this?

NEW STUFF DAY!!!!!!! MR. MZDA GET YOUR ASS IN HERE!!!
by Curt on Wed Dec 03, 2008 10:55 pm
Thank you Justin, My stuff came in today The amp sounds really really good! Well, i'm off to go play for a little bit.
The R-fier setting sounds mean(or as you would say Justin, NASTY)!
is back together. Stapp is back. other dood got the boot. its all about the benjamin$ . Heard the news on the radio today. No info on Creed site or Alterbridge. But Alterbridge dates from yesterday on are cancelled.
Which pickup is better? Im after a thick, heavy, clear sound which is super tight. The Dimebucker isnt a bad pup but its way too trebly IMO, so I need a pickup which isnt so trebly, the dimebucker kinda makes my amp sound like the guitars on retail release of death magnetic I dont have this problem with EMG's, they are nice and thick sounding but I dont have enough dough to buy a set of those atm so I need a decent sounding passive, ive narrowed it down to Duncan Distortion or X2N, X2N is a little more expensive, but overall for thrash metal which is better?

Can you guys give an idea about the value of this ML???
I was told it was a early 90's. And you can see it has no binding around the body. It has a nice set neck too. {no bolt on.}
It's a nice red finish.[/img]
Tuning/Intonation problem part II
I have my friends LTD EC-1000 finally, to try and fix the tuning problem on the low E string. (the guitar is tuned low to high, CGCFAD)
This is what its doing:
I can tune strings GCFAD with the tuner. and then by ear, tune the low C with the G on a power chord and get it to be in tune. but when I check the tuner, it says the low C is almost a quarter step low, even though by ear, it is in tune. I dont get it.
I checked the intonation, it seems to be right. Its hard to get it to be dead on, but im not sure I can get it any better. Unless I am missing something about proper intonation. I just fiddled with the saddle position until it was in tune on the 12th fret.
any ideas? Can it be truss rod related?

Well it is so good to have a look at many forums related to guitars, which are aimed at providing information to the guitar-enthusiasts. It is definitely ensured that the needs of every individual would be considered and whatever queries that they come up during the tenure of their guitar learning, could be attended to with ease.

Old Guitar Day (NDC) not vintage yet though...
by Trashed on Thu Dec 04, 2008 12:36 pm
After being boxed up for a couple of years and only taken out to show guests that I don't only have ML shaped guitars I've decided to part ways with my Jackson RR/LL...
Its an Japanese made Laiho signature made especially for Finland...
I had a lot of fun with it and many plans on upgrading and modifying it, but alas as soon as I got my first Dean its really been redundant...
Just felt like sharing it, don't really want to let her go but she deserves to be played a lot!!
So try to enjoy the pron ahead, and sorry for the quality... (if this sells I'll probably have to invest on a digital camera)
Crappy Cell pron:
I was really young when I got this guitar and thought I'd never ever sell it so I never thought about resale value
thats why I put so many stickers on it...
Old-ish band promo pictures - always good for a chuckle
I believe this one was from 1990, I am the bottom left guy with the Obituary shirt on.
and this one from 1991 or 1992, I really can't remember - I'm the middle hairbag
Share 'em if you got 'em
I've noticed that a sweeping majority of guitarists/musicians in general I've seen perform live are average to below average height.
Where do you fall?
The reason I ask is I read a book recently called "Outliers" which was a more in depth study of "success" and it found that a majority of professional hockey players are born in the first quarter of the year. I might be coming up with a pet theory for musicians
I've just been musing a minute ago while noodling away on my ML.... whenever you get a new guitar and it comes in the post, you open it up plug it in and of course - it's always an absolute dream! Or at least you want to believe it is. You head to the nearest guitar forum and cram the screen full of dazzly prawns and cleverly angled shots so that the light reflects JUST right off the fresh jizz stain on the headstock, and everyone knows that it truly is a thing of beauty, the best thing since sliced god-damn bread itself!
But has anyone ever ripped open the box, plugged in, started to play and just immediatley thought.... "Fu ck... this is a pile of sh ite.." and then openly admitted it when someone asks how your new guitar is?
No real point to this thread, just pondering.
5 weeks too long to wait for an order?
Just seeking opinions on this ---
I ordered some cheap gear from a small guitar gear company. They don't have anything to do with this forum by the way.
This isn't custom gear or anything, it's just something they throw in a box and ship.
It's been 5 weeks now and I haven't heard anything from them. I sent an email a week ago and I've heard nothing back.
I'm starting to get a little angry. The guy that runs the place has an inpeccable reputation. This is my first order from him. How much longer would you guys wait before you started escalating this?
I don't want to be a jerk (hence not naming the company) but I want what I paid for, or at least some corresponance.
What a Great Day With Some Pron(and I Need Some Help)
by Bullet on Thu Dec 04, 2008 10:50 pm
I got a call at about 8 this morning from my ex, she was freaking out. She told that she had won a $1,000 off a $5 scratch off. So we drove to the lottery office in Indianapolis to cash it. Which after taxes was about $600. So, on the was back she asked me what I wanted for Christmas, so I asked if she could turn her self, straight or at least bi, just to piss her off. Then she asked me what she could buy me. So I told her I wanted either a Spilttail or a Soltero(Thanks for the G.A.S. pains Mark.) So I dropped her off at her house. Then about 3 hours later, she called my and told me to stop by, that she had something for me. Which is usually nothing big, however sitting in living room on the couch was a Soltero for me for a early Christmas present. So I damn near had a heart attack when I seen. Which I didn't know but apparently one of the local music shops started carrying Deans. I frippin love this guitar so much. It plays so nice...
However there is one problem. The upper strap lock won't stay in. It keeps popping out, and usually hits me in the face. Is there any idea as to what could be wrong with it?
Sorry about the crappy pics, she doesn't have the best camera, and was hinting she wanted one for Christmas, so I guess I'm going to have to one up here with some overly expensive camera.
Anyone else taken a look at the new Dean Custom Shop page? I just stumbled onto it today, and I think it's a great idea. They don't have that many updates, seems like a new update every few months, but the pics they do have are pretty damn stunning.
More interestingly though, I was looking at one of the pics with the Tommy Bolin necks, and I noticed something interesting:
All the way on the left side, take a look at the guitars hanging up on the wall under the Dean Banner. Is that a Bel Aire I see? Even better, is that a Bel Aire double-neck underneath it !
i am having the most retarded time trying to find any parts for my new project dean anywhere. could somebody please point me in the direction that i can buy Dean accessories from? I.E. necks, tail pieces, bridges...etc.
any and all help would be appreciated, thanks in advanced.

TonePros bridge and tailpiece
Dimarzio Speed knobs (i think they go to 11 )
Locking Sperzels
Stain Fretboard Ebony
Black Toggle switch and output jack
Black straplocks (any brand suggestions?)
I just need your opinion on some pickups.
I want some good metal pickups but i want some that will handle cleans pretty good too. i was thinking EMG 81/85 but its not very clean-friendly. or a 81/60 set, but i really dont know the difference between the 81 and 85 (tell me?). But i really want to go for the 81TW/89 set because you can coil tap them.
Also what pots are the best, CTS 500k? I know with the 81/89s they would have to be push-pull. as you can see i know NOTHING about pots, haha. suggestions? ideas? on anything

Played a coffeehouse at my school today. Everything went pretty well, except I only got to play 2 songs in my solo set instead of the 4 i was suppost to be allowed to play. This is because I was doing 2 songs with a friend, which we didn't end up getting to play anyways due to some technical difficulties. Once we got things fixed, we got screwed over after being told we could play. Ah well, some songs are better then none. If nothing else, my little sister (7 years old) was exstatic because my second was wonderwall, and I had her sing with me. She actually did really well, and it was her first time singing infront of a crowd. Im pretty sure I can conjour some pictures and videos sooner or later.

Favourite Christmas Songs?
Okay, so for some of you cynics Christmas Day doesn't come slow enough and the whole idea of the festive season requires a thorough and conclusive "Bah Humbug", but personally I fuc kin' love Christmas! It means plenty of drink, easy women and new guitar gear!!!
So lets get a list going of everyones favourite Crimbo 'Choons!
I'll start off, Wham's Last Christmas is a firm favourite of mine, as is I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday by Wizzard and that Womble's christmas song. (I'm a sucker for a catchy hook and sweaty men in furry suits!! )
Get going guys!
Hey guys....just want some suggestions for programs you guys use on your computers for not so much recording but to get different amp models and stomp boxes and all that good crap!
NAD: Couldnt be happier!!! NOW WITH CLIPS!
After about two months of searching for the right amp for me I finally found it. A peavey 5150 halfstack locally for a steal of a price. Only 800!!!! Snatched it up with the quickness.
My review of the amp can be summed up in one word. DAAAAAAMN. I knew these things were good but not to the extent of this one. The low end on this thing even with the stock sheffields is amazing. It has a really nice "lamb of god" tone even through my sg with the 57 pickups, which are "lacking". Needless to say the 57's are getting the boot and hopefully being replaced with emgs. Anywho enough of me babling and to the pron!
Its so friggin big!
Missing a few knobs but i can cope, chicken heads are like 2 bucks
my sg with its new life partner : )
will post clips of it in a couple hours

Just a random Dean sighting. Was watching VH-1 Classic today and the Doobie Bros. vid for China Grove came on and there's a black V on there. Kinda cool. Here's a vid I found of the same show with I Cheat The Hangman and China Grove together. I've always liked the Hangman.........

Neck Profile on a Korean Caddy?
by Graunke on Fri Dec 05, 2008 9:26 pm
I got a Korean Caddy Select. I like it. What is the profile of the neck? C? Mild? V? Shaved V? B? R?
All these letters. I know what they mean, but I have nothing to compare them against to determine what it is.
Looking for Info on Caddy & Contour.
This Purple Caddy select is Korean, and I was told they don't make that color anymore. It also has a smaller head stock than my 04'Caddy. It's in excellent shape too.
Does anyone know what years these were made and what would have been the last year made?
I picked it up used and didn't know the differences til I got it home.
Second: Contour/ Del Fuego... What year exactly was the Contour series made? 00'/01'?
I heard they were only made 2 years. There is a white/blue/black/and RED.
Slayer reverse gallop Q?
by _koppen on Fri Dec 05, 2008 11:11 pm
How the hell does the reverse gallop actully works?
I saw it in a video of Kerry playing both regular and reverse, and explained it, but i still dont get it, please explain in reular languish someone!
For you who dont know, the reverse gallop is used in raingin blood, in the gallop riff.
"There's also the reverse gallop, two 16ths followed by an 8th"
What does it eman????
Ok, I want to get a new amp but more inportantly i want some new pedals. I am deffinatley getting the original crybaby wah. I was looking at some other stuff for metal and found a few pedals. I am interested in a specific one though.
I was wondering if anyone had experience with it and if so, Is it good? Here is the link:
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/ElectroHarmonix-Metal-Muff-with-Top-Boost?sku=153339
For those who dont want to click the link, the pedal is:
Electro-Harmonix XO Metal Muff with Top Boost Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal
That is what MF calls it at least.
What are your thoughts and experiences with this particular pedal?
What kind of bridge is this?
I found a cheap beat to s#%t used guitar that I like, but it has this weird ass bridge that I have never seen before. Apparently the guy says its some kind of a floyd rose bridge. Does anyone have any experience with these?

Blacking Out The Soltero Standard :: Question Two
Hello again,
So, I received one of the two of my packages from StewMac that would allow me to black out my Soltero Standard easier. I took out the bridge, the stop tail, and the bushings (thanks to the tool that Brave Dave recommended) and I'm ready to re-install the black hardware for those...
However, I've also taken off the pups and have the screws organized and whatnot. My question is, how do I go about removing the pups completely? Do I, dare say, snip the gray wire or something?
I HAVEN'T snipped anything yet, I'm going to wait for your reply. Also, my bridge pickup is also routed out the same way except that the gray wire is black for the bridge.
Thanks!
Shane
New piece of gear inbound on my position...
ISP Decimator. I wanna get some nice effect pedals and maybe a different distortion pedal sometime soon so I went to GC and used the 12% off sale and my 15 dollar gift card. So now I got me a Decimator coming.
If was funny though I came there and asked if they had any Decimators and the guy had no idea what I was talking about. His first response was, "Is that a pickup?"
I stopped at a different guitar store before that which kicks ass. I got to fondle a Custom Shop BC Rich Mockingbird in white with abalone fire inlays and some Dimarzio pups in it. That thing was killer. My only criticism was it was fairly neck heavy.
So yeah pretty cool guitar trip.

Reverb pedal prayers answered!
...so after quite a bit of testing and looking and researching, I finally found the pedal form reverb to add to my board...and from an unlikely source, I might add...
From DIGITECH...yikes. Nope, I'm not a fan of their effects...I've always been partial to Boss, even though I'm a Whammy fan. I dunno why, but the sound, reliability and overall design have always paled in comparison to other effects.
Well...today is a new day! Here's their Stereo Reverb, a new pedal in their Hardwire series. It features, as the name implies, true hardwire bypass. It's got about seven or so completely usable reverbs, and a selector switch to turn the trails on and off (you know, when you turn off the effect, if you still want to hear the decay of the notes)..although you lose the bypass feature if you engage the tails. Oh well...
...you can see the simple layout. The design of this pedal is really incredible. Whatever Lexicon reverbs are, they sure sound good. The knobs on this sucker are solid metal of some kind, very sturdy and are knurled. The stomp is solid, although I still prefer the ol' Boss stomps.
The 'case candy' with this is great! It's got a custom cut piece of velcro you can just attach to the bottom, and you're set. They included a form fit glow in the dark sticker for the stomper so you can see it on dim stages as well. And they include something called a stomplock, which is a fitted piece of rubber that fits over the knob section. I shoulda taken a photo of it...it's really cool. It not only ensure your settings don't change while the thing is in transit, it protects the knobs as well. Very nice touch, Digitech!
All in all, I'm totally looking at other pedals in this line-up. I'm very impressed.
Oh..the sound. Well, I couldn't find any of the Electro Harmonix pedals in town, so I had to try the Boss Digital Reverb and the Digitech Digiverb. I also tried the Verbzilla, Line 6 makes em.
The Digitech plain jane model didn't sound good at all in my rig. It wasn't noisy, it's just that the reverbs didn't really sound musical. And there was a nasty digital sounding effect when you palm muted the strings...very annoying. Of all the settings, only one really was usable.
The Boss pedal was next...it sounded fine, but almost too clean. I dunno how to explain it...it was an expensive pedal as well. And it didn't have the features of the Hardwire, which cost less (and the ebay seller also threw in the power supply AND a bitchin' FREE 20 foot cable!!!...seriously happy bout that ). It was the number two pick tho, for sure.
The Digiverb was very nice...almost as nice sounding as the Boss. But the thing just seemed flimsy...the knobs were these tiny lil plastic jobbies. Didn't really jive with the rest of my pedals, and I didn't feel like it could handle the job. It just felt cheap, like a lot of other Line 6 stomps I've tried (the smaller ones...the big ones are quite cool). And it had a lot of relatively useless verbs I'd never use.
So anyway! I'm glad I went with the Hardwire. It sounds great on cleans, AWESOME on distortion and doesn't have that cheesy digital sound that I've noticed on just about every other pedal I tried. While I wish my JSX had a reverb on it, I'm very pleased with this option.
My board is now complete!....for now

What makes a good guitarwood ?
by I M Evil on Sun Dec 07, 2008 11:20 am
I've been asking myself this for some time now, but I never
came up with an answer, so that's why I'm asking:
What makes a good guitarwood ?
At the beginning of electric guitars, there was
primarily 2 rivals, Gibson and Fender, but you knew that
Gibson used, and still does to this day, mahogany and rosewood,
and in some cases, a little maple (for tops) while Fender on the
other hand relied on ash, alder and mostly maple for their
necks and fretboards, although rosewood was used on some
fretboards as well Both made some damn fine instruments.
This made me wonder ... Could it have been that those
companies set the trends in guitarwood and companies
that started later followed these trends ?
But ... what makes those four types of wood the best guitar
woods? Is it possible to build a guitar of another wood selection
that generates an equally great sound or possibly greater ?
For instance, let's take Brian May and his Red Special
Here, we have a neck of mahogany and a oak fretboard,
while the body is made of oak, blockboard and mahogany
veneer for the looks.
These are, atleast oak and blockboard, some pretty untraditional
woods used for guitars but I'm yet to see someone complain
about Brian Mays sound.
So I'll ask again ... What makes a good guitarwood ?
Great Competition...

Hey Serious Guitar Players,
I posted this link somewhere else, but if you want to win some cool prizes (guitars, amps, record deal, press etc) and prove that you are better than the rest, check out www.guitaridol.tv
I saw the final last year and it rocked. The main stage at the London Guitar Show, a few thousand crowd, live band, full stage effects and the winner opened for Malmsteen. Not bad and good for the guitar community. Not enough Dean Shredders there, too many Ibanez twiddlers, not enough power! I don't why Dean aren't a sponsor?
This guy is my favorite so far this year (someone on Blabbermouth says he's joining G n' R - what another guitarist?):

So here I was wankin' on the floyd and all of a sudden I hear this @#$%&$@ noise....
....the bar becomes really loose, I pissed and yelled, "WTF?!"
The whammy bar snapped off at the part where it locks into the bridge.
It broke at that little twist screw on thing that you tighten it up with.
What I want to know is, is this normal?? For bars to just break....
OR, is my bar just a cheap piece of shat?
...and it's a licensed.

7 string questions.
by AhsanU on Mon Dec 08, 2008 10:47 am
What's up guys.
I'm going to buy a Razorback 7 really soon (Trivium fanatic + looking for new riff ideas) and I had a few questions.
How many springs come standard in the back? I'm assuming it won't be 3 because there's an extra string. Or am I misinformed?
As far as string gauge goes I use 9-50's for standard E. I wanted to keep it that way and just add a .56 or .58 for the low B. Will I need to add an extra spring in the back? Can the truss rod take it?
I'm also thinking of replacing the LFR with an OFR (so much better) along with replacing the EMG's for Seymour Duncan blackouts. But I don't know if changing the pickups is really worth it. There's a monumental difference (I feel) between LFR's and OFR's. But I don't know if the SD blackouts are that much better than the EMG's that come standard with the guitar.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Went to see C.O.B, Machine head and slipknot last night and decided it would be a good idea to circle headbang the whole damn gig, i cant freakin move now, also roope didnt use his new esp sig which i was quite suprised at.

Speakers Combo Amps and Extension Cabs
by Graunke on Mon Dec 08, 2008 6:04 pm
So, I have a Bass Combo amp. It has a 1/4" Output that goes to the 15" speaker.
I would like to use an extension cab, in addition to the combo speaker. Can I use an A/B box to split the signal safely? What happens to the ohm ratings? Will there be smoke and fire. Will chicks dig it?
Please discuss.
Not really Dime related but?

So I e-mailed them and said that they had the wrong description there. Haven't checked my e-mail in a few days, today checked it and noticed an e-mail from SDM.

Help me decide on an amp.....(RG50TC or Valveking 112)
Im gonna get a new amp for myself this christmas and i've finally decided to go tube!
The only problem is, i cant decide between a valveking 112 or the randall rg50 TC. The randall is more expensive but i still cant decide. I like the sound of both of them and i just wanted to see other peoples views on them, to find out which one would be worth the money.
Thanks.
Any one have one of these? I've been looking for some soundclips but can't find any. So if anyone has one can you tell me how it is compared to the 500xl? More mids, bass etc.?
Thanks in advance.
the youth of this country seem to be enthralled by this game, i personally think it (along with soldier boi) are the downfall of humanity as we know it. with all the time effort and energy that young children put into this game, they could learn to play a real instrument, that could actually be beneficial to their lives. i know some people say that it encourages them to learn real instruments, but i have to disagree if they get the feeling of success from the game, what drive do they have to do it in real life?
what do you guys think?

For those of you youngins' that may not be in the know, that is Mr. Shannon Larkin on drums in his late teens in the first vid and early 20s' in the second. Same band, just changed names after a lawsuit. This is the real Shannon, pre-Godsmack and Another Animal. It may not be "Metal" enough for some of you but that is where it's at for me. The band that influenced me the most.

Well Ive been checking out some Clean boost pedals... Ive been boosting with a vintage Mxr distortion +.. im wanting to try a good clean boost now. I run a boost followed by an EQ in a mid boosted frown shape. The clean boost needs to have about 20db of natural sounding clean boost. Preferably boosting a flat signal. The pedal should be able to clean up well from the guitar as well ill prolly leave it on alot of the time. Gimme ur guyz ideas here on the pros and cons of each. Thanks alot in advance!!!
Just got home from seeing AC/DC
I'm dead tired, but all I have to say is that the show was amazing, they sounded great, played great, and dammit, no other rockers their age can still move like Angus and Brian.

It's Snowing In New Orleans!!! Oh no, My Guitar!!!
by Conbud on Thu Dec 11, 2008 2:39 pm
I would love to take pics out in this with my guitar, but I have no clue if it would ruin it?
Either way, I woke up this morning and turned on the news and they were talking about it snowing on the Northshore. They said for it to snow on the Southshore in NOLA is highly unlikely, the %$#@! it's not!!!
It's snowing it's tail off here!!!
Guys y'all have to excuse me, we don't get snow here often at all!
The last time it snowed in New Orleans was the Winter before Katrina hit.
Anyway, will snow hurt a guitar?

I saw this ML at a local music shop (used) it looked pretty old.
The pickup selector was next to the knobs and the imput jack was on the inside of the croch ( on the bottom wing) and one of the strap pegs was on the tip of the upper wing..
and It was a tiny V head stock....
What kind of ML is this?

I should start a metalcore band.

That is all.

I ordered a few items myself to check out what the print actually looks like as I'd rather not distribute stuff that looks like shite irl, but I am hopeful
Ok, i would like to know more about fretless guitars, and who best to ask than some of the great guys on the forum that just know there damn s#%t
so, Explain to me whats some great things a fretless guitar can do?
thanks
Well i just wrote this rediculously long thread, and my computer froze.
Here's the jist of what it did say.
Metalzone is garbage.
Mg100 head overdrive channel garbage.
Metal zone with EQ is okay, still crud though.
Mg100 overdrive with propper EQ, is ok, atleast the notes come out and are not hidden in crap loads of digital distortion and noise like the metalzone, but still i don't know which i prefer, both are missing one of the others tributes.
TONE = Insanity
Especially if the tools you are working with are:
(my stuff)
Mg100 head with Marshall 1960A 4x12 cab (celestion 75s)
Metalzone on clean channel, i use my Boss eq in loop with it.
Overdrive of amp, i use my mxr 10 band eq in the loop with it.
Who uses the metalzone seriously, other than people just starting out?
I'm still saving for my tube head, i want a carvin v3, because i like the sound on it's own, and the price is not 2000$ like JCM head.
And i have seen people on this forum say the metal zone is good, and they must not have heard real tone or something, i have no clue what is wrong with you if you believe this, i can't even bare it without an eq.
That's all, just a rant
Saw the Lynch Mob last night...
Bit of an 80s glam night last night at the Metro.
First up were a Melbourne band called the The Deadthings. Started off a bit slow but really fired into it about halfway through. They were great, lots of hairspray and attitude. Bought their record on the strength of this show and am rocking out to it as I type this.
Next were Faster Pussycat. Bad. Really bad. Obviously came over for a holiday in the sun and it showed. I was looking forward to these guys and I was bitterly disappointed. I retired to the bar about 4 songs into their set looking for a bit of JD therapy.
Then the Lynch Mob came on after faffing around for ages sorting out their gear. They rocked the place. I had never heard any Lynch Mob stuff and Dokken was a bit early for me so I can't tell you what was in the set. I can say that the backline were tight and the singer wailed his bollocks off. George's sound was a bit muddy for the first half of the set (he was playing one of his esp skully guitars) but then he changed to an esp strat-a-like and that seemed to cut through the mix much better.
The man looks like he has led a hard life, his face looked like old leather, but by crikey can he play! He lead playing was great, but what really impressed me was his rhythm playing. He never played the same thing twice. He was always chucking in little fills, squeals, bends, slides, whatever to keep it sounding interesting. I was blown away and promised myself that I am going to work on my rhythm skills after seeing him do his stuff. Great player and he seemed to be enjoying himself. Certainly the crowd went mental when he played Mr Scary.
A question for those more experienced in live sound than I: George was plaing through two amps: a soldano and an old marshall. However he had the amps surrounded by a plexiglass screen. Is this so he can set the amps at insane volumes and not drown out the rest of the band?
Anyway, sorry about the long post but I really dug the show and would recommend to all of my forum comrades to check out the Lynch Mob but avoid Faster Pussycat like the plague!
Hey guys, I've been looking at alot of multi effects lately and I have it narrowed down to either a Boss GT-10 or a Line6 POD X3 Live, What are your suggestions?
My "$20" pointy .... PRON INSIDE......
Howdy all. I recently picked up a mystery brand Pointy .... it has a cool shape , the bottom butt wing is a bit small for my tastes , but for 20 bucks , who could say 'no' ?
I got it home and took the super cheesy neck off and fitted a JacksonPC3 neck that I just happened to have laying around. The neck is absolutely sick to play , nice n smooth , easy to fret and it has a killer , bity- tone to it. Gotta love Maple.
But here she is - I kept the stock p-ups after looking them over real good. Never seen anything like em . They are completely sealed w/3 adjustment screws in the ring . They sound good , too.
So , here it is. My cheapest score ever. all pointy like.
and the bottom pic is a Kramer I built up from scratch out of ebay parts. Sold it when I was done , but had a great time building it.

Thinking of Upgrading Tuners...
Well, for Christmas, since it's just way too hard to find an amp that'll give me MY sound, I decided I want to spend a little more on my guitar, and replace my tuners!
I want tuners that won't slip, so locking tuners sound good...
I've been checking Sperzel, and their prices aren't too bad... I might even buy an X2N for Christmas!
But, what are some reccomended tuners? I want to get to know all the brands, so I know my options, and I wanna know your experiences with them.
Thanks!
I am looking for a relativly cheap guitar that can be my beater that i do things like school related stuff with. I like the Alexi Laiho guitars and found an Agile that looks kinda like it. I really like it already. It is:
V shape body
set neck
Tune-o-matic bridge
1 vol/1 tone with 3-way selector switch
EMG HZ humbuckers
$190!!!(i said CHEAP!!
My only draw back is the EMG HZ's. Does anyone have experience with them? Are they good for a metal/rock tone? Just all a round, How are they?

Hey guys,
Just to let y'all know, that I will be checking in here every once in a while for the next few weeks. I post this, as I have some transactions going on with forum members right now. Berserker is buying my Slime, some folks are printing Dean game boards, etc....
Looks like my home PC will need a repair, or I will have to get a new one. It's a compaq presario and the little green light under the "sun" looking thingy (real hi tech, I know ), just flickers dimly..., and that's it!!! I've tried unplugging it, but I still can't turn it on. I've even held the on/off reboot button in for a minute..., and still nothing happens.
Good news, is that I can access the Dean forums from work

ZOOM G2G.
It was a parting gift from my old job. It's actually doesn't suck. I have actually only tried it with headphones, but since I can't take my 6505 with me to Canada, this will be my practice companion. I thought it was going to be junk, but surprisingly? It's not.
My head hurts when I see the setups a lot of guitarists play through. Thinking about simple setups, I was curious what other players consider must-have pedals that they wouldn't want to play without. I'm guessing the top answers will be a tuner, wah, and a boost and noise gate of some kind. Tell us what what kind of music you play, which pedals you absolutely need, and why.
I play hard rock and metal and currently use eight pedals but wouldn't want to go without my tuner (quicker and more reliable than my ears), my noise gate (gotta cut out the hiss and feedback), and my BBE Sonic Stomp. As much as I love wah, I don't even know if I use it half the time I'm playing leads and although I love throwing an OD or an EQ upfront to boost my preamp it's more to tighten it up, smooth it out, increase sustain, and excite the harmonics more than something I completely rely on for my tone. But I feel the BBE in my loop takes my amp to another level and makes it sound like a million bucks (or at least a lot more than I paid for it). Ever since I got it two or three years ago, amps sound dull and lifeless without it to me.

My second "New Pedal Day"
Last time I brought a Boss Tu-2 home remember? Now I got something else! Boss Ns-2!
What are your thoughts on this pedal?
Advice on a messed up finger, please?
Ok, so here's what happened. When I was about 6, part of my finger got chopped off by the fan of an unguarded leaf blower that, for some reason, I was allowed to play with.
It was never treated. And now it's all... sensitive. If I play guitar for any amount of time, it begins to hurt too bad to keep playing. I can play bass with it, since that generally only involves the tip, but chording on a guitar, where the side of my finger presses on the string, it gets bad.
I tried taping it, but that only makes it a little better.
Perhaps the Iommi plastic/leather deal is in order? Any ideas? I may just have to stick to open tunings.
Hey guys, I just bought a new 6505+ last night, and put an OFR on my Dark Knight and tuned it a whole step down to D. I was running it through the head and it sounded absolutely brutal. It's loaded with a JB/Jazz set up. then i switched over to my MLF in standard loaded with a BNB L500XL/'59 and it sounded amazing. I had one problem though and i was hoping you guys could clue me in on the solution.
The volume difference between the two guitars in pretty severe. Is it because of the tuning difference and the standard just sounds brighter or is the difference in pick up out put or something else i am not think of?
As always any help is much appreciated.
Thanks guys

Got the pups in today bro!
I figured the x2n power plus would be like a normal x2n, but it looks more like a Dsonic! which is a good thing. I gotta wonder how it will sound! if I don't like it in my strat, it'll be put up for the next guitar and the new x2n will go in.

SUNN amps - hype or REALLY good amps?
by grinder on Fri Dec 12, 2008 11:32 pm
The Model T is going for about $1500 on ebay, but you can find great amps from the 60's/70's by a fraction of the cost (I bought a Carlsbro TC100 for $200). I never played through a Sunn amp to know how good they really are, anyone here has one? Are they really $1500 good or is it all just hype?

Serious Trouble Looking at Pickups...
So... I need something that can do Pantera, but yet can get the tones of Blink-182.
Now, I know it sounds weird as hell, but I can get those tones out of my current pickup, but it comes so close to my strings, when I palm mute, it squeeks sometimes.
So hopefully, I can get a little bit of a higher output pickup this Christmas...
I want virtually the same great tone as this no-name Dean pickup, just, I want that sound, further from my strings so it doesn't do that below 70 IQ type s#%t with the squeeking.
Thanks! I've looked at the X2N, Duncan Invader, etc... looking for anything...

Spray-wol. Xmas is coming and I should be getting an airbrush kit - no Iwata, I'm going MAster G23 + createx, and a compressor and other supplies. Any who, I'm going to be sanding down the necks on my C neck guitars to give them a more V neck profile. I got one problem though. I want to keep my FBD the same color and finish on the neck but I'm not sure how to pull that one off. Any one able to help? Also, do I have to use a sanding sealer on the necks after I sand them down? I think I do but I've been wrong.

Hair Metal That You Liked In The 80's

Story: The Rebel Razorback sold for $2325 Brand new.
Hey guys,
This is the first time I've posted here in ages now, well I want to get into the habit of posting in this forum again so heres a story about what happened today.
Alright so today I went down to my local guitar store called Kosmic Sound to buy some guitar stands and picks. I also happened to know a guy working there who handles all the Dean Guitars that come in and I was talking to him about Razorbacks.
I told him about all the hidden stuff in the Cemetery Gates Razorback and yeah everything they didn't know about the guitars and like, well their history, like " Why the hell is there a Razor on the 12th fret?".
Anyway we got onto the topic about USA Razorbacks and I asked about two guitars that they had until recently which was a Rust and a Rebel Razorback. And I remembered the OUTRAGEOUS price they they had for the Rebel Razorback, which was... wait for it... $14,000.
In Australian dollars of course, which would amount to $9,301 US. Which is not expensive at all!
And as time passed no one wanted to buy this hell expensive guitar so what do they do they lower the price to $3,999 AU ($2,656 US) and still no one buys.
So I was like, well do you stil have the guitar? And he said that just yesterday some " smartass" offered $3,500 AU for it, and well what do they do? They sell it.
I know its not intresting but I mean this guy got a brand new Rebel Razorback for $2,325 US Dollars. Its the only time I've seen a "cheap" guitar (compared to US prices) in Australia.
Well all I can say is right now, for people in Australia its better to buy from your local store than ordering and importing from US.
Have a nice day.
Metalfan93
I'm thinking about installing a set of EMG 85s in my Black Gold ML.
Will these be a direct fit, or will I need to rout the cavities?
Gear you don't buy at a music store
I'm hoping this will be an interesting thread that we can use to give each other ideas.
Do you have any gear that isn't really meant for guitar use?
Here are my examples -
This is a sewing kit holder that I bought from Walgreens. It works great for guitar picks. I take these on tour and I always have my picks handy.
This is a nuts/bolts organizer from Home Depot. I keep it on top of my desk in my studio. As you can see, it holds strings, strap bolts, picks, tools, etc. All my guitar accessories are in this.
Help me identify this guitar.
I got this guitar almost a year ago, and I really dig it. I know it's a Cadillac, and the guy said it was a '94, but I wanted to be sure so I figured I'd ask you guys. It's got a pretty thin neck, and a shrimpfork headstock, so I figured Tropical, but you never know.
I payed about $475 for it used at a shop with notoriously high prices, so I wanted to find out what this might be worth, just in case. I ended up getting a free N-Tune onboard tuner thing from the dudes who own the company (they came to the guitar store I work at in Seattle and took lessons from one of our teachers), so I had that installed in there a few months ago. But that's enough talk. Here's the obligatory pron.
Before I got the N-Tune installed:

I fast forwarded the drum solo 'cause I didn't want to stand there like a retard.
Enjoy.

So here is a Camero I did not too long ago, it came out alright I guess. Just thought I'd share. Oh and it looks a lot better in person.

by Davebag on Sun Dec 14, 2008 6:28 am
so i got my ml 79f on wendesday and today i noticed there was some buzz
so i rased the floyd and the buzz was gone on the 12 frets but not on the
frets before the 12th on the big end, they still buzz,so i checked the truss rod and tighted
it to the proper tension, but the action raised and the buzz was reduced but
its not completly gone but its still pretty anoying
my quiestion is: am i doing something wrong? or will there always be buzzing?

do you know any "rockstars"??
by brn14me on Mon Dec 15, 2008 1:00 am
Last night I went to a free metal show.
I'm not sure how many bands total but the band 2 before the headliner was pretty good. Thrash metal, kinda reminded me of a cross between Nuclear Assault and D.R.I. Not to mention the rythym guitarist and bassist played Deans so they caught my attention.
After they played I went up to get a CD and figured to shoot the sh*t a bit. When I got the CD the guitarist asked me, "want me to autograph it?" I was like man it really don't matter I just thought y'all jammed and wanted to show some love "Well you never know we could be the next big thing and this could be worth something.......What's your name" (sharpie in hand)
Like I said they put on a good show but they're 40 something year old dudes opening for the opening band of a free show!! I doubt they're going to be the next big thing!! Dude thought he was "the man" I just thought it was kind of funny...........and the cd sounded like ass!!
anyone else run across people so full of themselves they're head could explode?
Power Conditioner Question
I use a Furman M-8DX power conditioner that I run my bass amp through, as well as whatever other small things I have like pedals.
I'm looking to find whether it is safe or not to run (in my situation) another amp off of it. Like if I plugged in my bandmate's 5150 guitar amp into it too. I would assume there is some kind of limit, right? I figured I better ask before I just go and try it. Dont want anything catching fire.
Looking for good reverb pedal
I'm doing some research for my bandmate who just got the 5150. As many know, it doesnt have any fx on it, but he asked me what a good reverb pedal is. I was thinking he could just put it in the fx loop and leave it on. What do all you brainy gear whores think is the best way to go?
But i'm gonna open it for myself on Christmas. This one:
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Furman-SPB8-Pedal-Board?sku=541961
The question is, what else do I need besides connector cables, pedals, and the board? I was looking at those Visual Sound 1 Spot Combo Packs. Is that what I need to power the pedals, since the board has the power outlets and whatnot?

Can a guitar be made today without plastic?
So..., here I am surfin` the Dean forums, and I see the best looking korina Soltero I`ve ever seen in my life, and I says to myself: is it possible to build a guitar today, without using any plastic? This guitar is absolutely georgeous, but if I could have it custom made for me..., all the plastic would be gone.
I`ve seen guitars on ebay with natural wood cavity covers on the back, metal volume & tone knobs, and bone nuts. What else is out there for pick up rings, pick ups, pick up covers, pick up switchs, and binding?
Can anyone post a guitar here made completely without any plastic? Am I a freak, or does anyone else think this way?
Stumbled across this while looking at Washburn Idols..., I was mostly intrested in thier voice contour pick up system that goes from humbucker to single coil sounding. Anyway..., here`s some shredder guy that I found:
http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=JeEbx1V0fAY
It takes him a while to get going, but he starts to play at about the 1 minute mark, shreds around 2 mins. But what I like, is he attacks his strings very aggressively..., you`ll notice it around the 3 minute mark. He doesn`t suffer from that shred super fast, but soft hands syndrome.
Oh ya..., if you`re intrested in those voice contoured pups I was originally looking up:

Dean MLX Rip - off?
by Azzau on Mon Dec 15, 2008 6:59 am
Well I've been thinking about this for ages.
Well, you see, My dad bought me a Dean MLX for my birthday in July. In America these only cost around $220.
But you see the real shocker is that my dad payed $599 for it (I'm in Australia by the way). Don't you think it is just one of the biggest rip - offs ever? What are your opinions?
What Dean is this? (...if it even IS one!)
Pretty sure it is. I think they were called "Tonic" or something like that? Or am I imagining things?
I'm pretty sure that's a Dean logo on the headstock.
That guitar is seriously cool!!

Blackstar HT-5 Head...
by Greg... on Mon Dec 15, 2008 3:51 pm
Hey Guys,
I just wanted to say...
I've finally found an Amp I love! It is the tone in my head, This amp is INCREDIBLE! I played it for about an hour and it shreds, man! It can go from full on Trivium High-Gain riffing to nailing the 'Tallica DM tone... The cleans are sweet as well... It has a control called the ISF, which is absolutely incredible, it stands for Infinite Shape Feature, what it basically does is @ 0 it is a full on USA voiced and @ 10 it is a British voiced amp. It has a tonne of gain, the 2 channels are foot switchable, all tube, the headphone output has a selectable 212 cab emulator or a 412 emulator... If you can try one out, do it!
I only went to the shop to try out a Marshall TSL60 Head, and came out as a Blackstar salesman...
Oh and it's made in the United Kingdom
Expect a NAD from me soon... Life IS good!

For those interested, a Dimarzio Norton clip *Iced Earth*
by Kride on Mon Dec 15, 2008 5:01 pm
Anyways, I decided to record a pretty easy song,
Iced Earth - A Question Of Heaven
Few mistakes here and there etc. and the drums are occasionally pretty
Didn't fiddle around with them much. I hate it when I export a midi track from guitar pro, put it in Sonar/Addictive drums and all the beats have changed and some beats are missing
The clip is ALL Dimarzio Norton in the bridge -> POD X3 Live -> Sonar 7
No post EQ except hi-pass and just a tad low boost on the cleans.
The cleans are meh compared to a BKP Nailbomb (found in the bridge of my other guitars) but otherwise I REALLY like this pickup-
Oh, and the clip :p

Random pron, custom washburn and etc
by Malek on Mon Dec 15, 2008 6:12 pm
never really posted any of my guitars up in here so here's a few pics. The black Washburn is the WE333 snow camo, obviously stripped and painted in a flat black. Cut and added the diamond plate myself. Looks very industrial having random overspray and a rough finish and I'm happy with it
I no longer own the Jackson or the Washburn BT2, but I did gain a Washburn Dimebolt for free (decapitated when i got it...obviously fixed with some wood glue and lots of pressure)
That's unfortunately all i have right now, little gearless at this point
Soltero Upper fret access?
Recently obtained this neat little les paul knockoff that is sorta fun to play, but the upper frets are a nightmare, true to a les paul. My fingers aren't that short, but bending 22 is ludacris.
I was wondering, how are the Solteros for upper fret access? Manageable? Also, isn't a V-neck standard for a soltero?

Well, today was pretty funny in my 8th grade class.
At the start of class, I told my friend "GETCHA PULL!", and then I started telling everyone that.
After I explained it to a few people, they spread it, and I had the whole Junior High yelling "GETCHA PULL!!!" all afternoon.
I even told my substitute teacher (A Nun ) That I was too busy "Gettin' My Pull" to do work. She accepted it.
So yeah, there's my story... Just thought I'd share.
Ain't the end of the world but, Tendonitis.
Talking with my weight training teacher today, I mentioned that over the past few weeks I've been having some bad pain in my left shoulder and lifting or even moving it can be excruciating at times. Hell while sitting it hurts. He first thought I might've hyper extended it, until he asked me to lift it on my side then lift it infront of myself. I can do both but, to my side is where the pain kicks in. I originally though just Les Paul shoulder, or whatever but he says it probably tendonitis but nothing too bad and to just keep massaging it and promote blood flow. In some ways it feels as if it's getting worse, and sleeping can be uncomfortable. Any one know what I'm talking about?
Guitar Instruction on Youtube
by TheWall on Mon Dec 15, 2008 10:33 pm
A lot of people had mentioned before that they had learned how to play guitar or got some type of instruction off of videos on Youtube
At the time I couldn't really find anything that was cohesive enough for me but recently I found an entire section of good lessons on youtube which then led me to the site they came from. you can check it out at www.rockguitar.com/youtube-guitar-lesson-videos.htm. I hope it helps everyone else out as much as it did me.
They have part of their newest DVD Speed Lives 2 by Michael Angelo Batio on there too. You can even print the tab for the exercises, which I couldn't seem to find on any other Youtube videos. Very exciting and helpful!!
New song on Carl Strum Jams - BREATHE

Also, please don't hesitate to say what you think of it thus far. I was experimenting, and recorded myself twice. This recording stuff is quite a bit of fun!
EDIT: Don't tell me to go METALLZLZZZZ On this one!
I want to keep this pure, so my aged father will appreciate it!
NGD... NDC... Now with Prawnz!
Camera is at GF's house.
Got an Agile Hornet Pro BK 7.
This is a great playing guitar and a whale of a value if you consider what other set neck 7 strings typically run.
The neck profile is killer. I am really digging the flat radius neck, even though it makes it a touch more difficult to grip chords by the nut.
More to come tomorrow, with PRAWNS
Update: Prawnz.
I put a stapler in the case so you could get an idea of the relative size. It's as long as my DV8-R, but the tips are not as wide. I'll get side by side shots this evening.
Grover tuners, LFR, ebony board (tried to photograph the grain), set neck, EMG 707s, 2 vol, 1 tone, 25k pots, bound neck, no inlays. Tonight we'll look at the guts.
I'm horrible with a camera and apparently didn't let the camera finish focusing in a couple shots.
So onto the prawnz0r.
EMG to SD Blackouts
by rridner on Tue Dec 16, 2008 3:34 am
It is my understanding that the Blackouts are a direct replacement for EMGs. That you do not need to change any of the wiring, etc when swapping one for the other. I had EMGs in my guitar and replaced em out for Blackouts. I got the Blackouts in and there is nothing happening - no sound coming from my guitar. I went to tune the guitar using an electronic tuner and there was no frequency being sent to the tuner. Could it be something as simple as the battery? It was fine when the EMGs were in there. Are the pups not directly swappable? Help!
Test recording.
by mpire on Tue Dec 16, 2008 3:41 am
Ok, so I got my Godin a few weeks ago, which has separate outputs for Piezo, Mag pickups and Midi.
Today I upgraded my interface to an mbox 2 pro, so I can actually record them all at once.
Ok, so this short thing is just a one take, few chords with a drum track.
Starts off with all three going at once, then solos the Acoustic, then the Synth (with marimba & choir patches ), then finally a couple high gain models.
http://www.mpire667.com/tunes/mbptest.mp3
Has anybody ever gotten a response from Bill and Becky through email?
I wish I didn't like the pickups so much. I could go and get any pickup in town EXECPT the only one I want. If Ido get a hold of them I'll have to wait forever.

GFS Guitar Fetish Hardware!!!
So Ive been looking around this site quite a bit and I've been contemplating buying a mighty mite neck.. and a kne strat body... and using GFS hardware and build myself a strat. Im just worried about quality here.
Would the USA replacement Tremolo stay in tune? If I use their locking tuners?
How are their pots?
I know the pups are good for the money.
I just dont wanna throw a bunch of money away on hardware that doesnt even compete with a squier. What price range of guitar would you find this quality of hardware on... I mean can i trust this stuff?

NGD MASSIVE USA PRON AND REVIEW
SCROLL DOWN FOR REVIEW AND PRON
I want to thank steve at BRG in a huge way for getting this guitar to me, he was a massive help and hooked me up right proper for sure. i will deffinetely be hitting him up for some more stuff in the future.
don't you hate it when people make these topics and dont leave pron . I just got a call from work, it seems they have recieved a big white box for me roughly a half hour ago, and i'm gonna leave you guys hanging for a little while, but as not to be a complete dick about it, heres a pic from steve of my guitar when she showed at BRG.
Pedal Review/Appreciation
Hey guys, what's up.Tom here.I wanted to do this little review for the Electro Harmonix Metal Muff Pocket .This is the best pedal ever.I might do this for other stuff I buy and could recommend.I'm a guitarist on a budget,so I always try to get the most bang for my buck.
1.Appearance
It's a cool looking little pedal. Its size and colour caused me to nickname it ''The Little Black Box''.It's diecast steel, with a solid black paintcoat. It's not fancy or complicated looking,it's pretty straightforward.
2.Controls
The controls are very simple and sturdy. You got your volume knob, distortion knob, stomp button, and boost switch. The volume knob can give your amp a huge kick in the ass,and it can take any amp and give it a volume that will strip the paint off a car.The Distortion knob is very versatile,on 9 o' clock it's perfect for a good classic rock tone,on 12 o' clock it's a good hard-rock/metal tone, and around 3 o' clock it really shines,thrash/death metal tone all the way.
The boost switch is awesome. It can be set off,set to boost your lows,or to boost your highs.I hardly use the lows since my amp already has alot of low,but the high boost is awesome. With the high boost on,crank the volume up a bit and it screams like a banshee.Great for kicking your amp up for harmonics that are on the edge of supersonic.
3.Sound
Oh hell yes. This took me completely by suprise the first time I tried it out.I use an old shitbox unknown german amplifier that isnt even made for metal, and I plugged in the Metal Muff Pocket, and I didnt believe my ears.It turned my old shitbox into a fuggin' Randall stack. You have to hear it for yourself to believe it.It can be used for classic rock, hard rock, and the heaviest of metals. It can even nail the Dime tone that so many people want! It can turn any amp into a raging demon speaker from hell!
4.Quality
For lack of a better word, perfect. The diecast box is built like a tank, and it's made in the good ole US of A.It really lives up to the nickname ''Little Black Box''.It could survive a plane crash easily. It can take a standard 9 volt adapter,or a battery. You can fit it in your pocket as well! The quality is top notch.
All in all,I give this pedal a 9.5 out of 10.It's affordable as hell for 60 bucks, and you won't regret it.
-Tom
my left hand is fast as lightning but while i was working on that my right hand has suffered do you guys have any stuff i can do to speed up and make my right hand as good as my left?
I have not had a tube amp since I was in high school (that was the late 1970's). Since, it's all been solid state. I only had fond memories of going to my mom and dad's garage and turning on the amp and then sitting back to await the tubes to warm up.
So 30 years is too long to wait for tubes again. I just bought a tube half stack for my son and I last night. It is vintage and the tubes are not fresh, but she sounds good and warm. The head is pretty bare, no effects, but that is what I wanted. I'm also going back old-school to analog stomp boxes - the Line 6 POD pedal we have is cool, but not like the old days.
Nuff about that though, I wanted to pick some TUBE AMP guy brains. It's been too long, and even back then I was just a teen and not as sharp in some ways than today. So are there any tube amp tips I should be aware of? This head has 7 or 8 tubes total, they seem to heat up to operating temp pretty fast. It has a pre- switch with STANDBY, and then a separate power switch. I understand you can put her into STANDBY if you want a break and to still keep the tubes warm. Is there any start up and #$%@ down order I should follow?
I read online that it wouldn't hurt to add a cooling fan. Is that a good idea or does it matter? I don't play live and so at most it's going to be on maybe an hour at a time at home. For short bursts of guitar pleasure, we'll probably just plug into the Marshall solid state.
Besides distortion, are there any "must have" effects or stomp boxes that would enhance the whole tube amp experience? I have a Holy Grail for reverb, and have an analog delay on order, a Morley Wah, compressor, EQ, and chorus. I know... You'll say DISTORTION, but forget about that for a moment (I usually play more clean).
Our cats seem to love sitting on top of the head (not while it is powered up, of course)... I think the warmth from the tubes stays long enough after for them to enjoy.
Now in the event that my rambling just bored anybody... here's a photo stress relief of my friend Carolee and or red DEAN Del Sol.
I've got two questions you see every where with no real answers:
-Will metal humbucking rings affect your sound?
-Will plastic or metal pickup covers affect your sound - not the screw on types.
musicians computer, mac or PC
So, I`m going to replace my home computer. I learned alot in nearly 5 years on my compac presario which is now toast. I say that I `learned alot`as the f`ìng thing broke down on me alot over that period of time.
I now have friends who are musicians and also earn thier living working with computers..., who are advising me to buy a mac. They are selling me on the usual trouble free, hassle free stuff that you always hear + they advise me that a musician can do alot with just a basic mac. Thoughts, opinions?!?
I need only to:
check email, surf net
work with word and excel from time to time
work with photos and movies
educational games for the kids
I dont need a computer for recording and mixing music, but i would like to start learning how to do home studio work.
I know the online pro's and con's of MONSTER CABLES. I'm not interested in hearing that battle again (Ford vs. Chevy, Canon vs. Nikon, Fender vs. Gibson, etc.).
Do they work? Do they do the job better than the down-the-street piece of crap cable at Joe's Bargain Guitar Emporium?
I figure that they must.
Even the doubter cannot deny they are built better than a cheap guitar cord.
Beyond the basic obvious, though... Is it worth replacing amp-to-cab, effects-to-effects, and the all too important guitar-to-? with a Monster?
Is there another brand that smashes them?
Is Monster okay for quality, but not worth the added dollar?
Besides the obvious chance Ebay deal, is there anyone that sells high end LONG LASTING cables that are a good deal?
(Note: I am seeking only for home use, I do not gig or tour

Many things, but in my case, good music is not one of them:

If you can't tell they obviously aren't polished or really premeditated either. That's my style.

DIY Guitar wall hooks
by sac on Wed Dec 17, 2008 2:50 am
I didn't feel like spending $20+ on a wall hook to hang my guitar on the wall. So I looked to nowhere else than......Wal-Mart! And who knew, they had guitar hooks there for $2.97. They just had another name them. Here is how to do it.
Buy this hook
Find a stud (in the wall, not yourself) and drill a hole and screw the hook in
Then hang those axes proud!
I hope this helped, I know money is tight this time of year.

after being a bassist for 8 years, i decided to start trying to play guitar almost a year ago. i think i'm making pretty decent progress. im starting to try and learn some lead techniques. one thing ive always wanted to learn is pinch harmonics. i've been told a million times to "hit the string with your pick and your thumb at the same time". ive done this countless times and have yet to pull of a successful squeal. are there any hints or tricks you guys could impart on me? i promise not to abuse them like Zakk Wylde!
just noticed some new guitars on the website
dime blackbolt ML & VMNTX united abonination

Carvin Singlecuts VS Solteros?
I'm wondering if any forum member has one of both of these?
I'm starting to shop around, and Dean's neck joint on the Soltero is a pretty solid arguement for it, but i'm trying to keep an open mind and a Carvin USA seems to be possible.
Anyone have both?
Hi guys!
When Edge opened the throttle, there was quite a roar.
--- I don't know too much about music and playing and I'm just curious if "throttle" is a part of an amp or a speaker?
thanks
It's the violent revolution... *Kreator clip!!*
by Kride on Wed Dec 17, 2008 8:01 pm
Me and my bro finally finished recording the Violent Revolution clip and here's the final product for y'all to listen and comment on
The rhythm guitars were recorded with my brother's Engl Savage 60 amp directly into the E-MU 0202 audio interface using some random impulse file that sounded good.
The leads were recorded using my Line 6 X3 Live. Recording software was Cakewalk Sonar 7 PE and drums were made with the Addictive Drums plug-in.
Left rhythm: Edwards E-LP-85CD w/ set of BKP Nailbombs (me)
Left lead & solos: Caparison Horus w/ BKP Nailbomb & stock neck pup (me)
Right rhythm & leads: Jackson DK-2 w/ Tom Anderson H2+ in bridge and stock Duncan single-coils (my bro)
I'll porbably fiddle around the mix tomorrow trying to find better impulse file and make the bass plug-in less boomy.
Cheerios!
Feedback is appreciated!!!!!!
EDIT: 3RD MIX (maybe final)

Any one own a Dime Redwood USA? pics please!
by Bradley on Thu Dec 18, 2008 1:29 am
I'd like to see some non-dean-website pictures of this axe, if you got one please post some pron...
I would love to see how it looks and or sounds. I think if I was to get any USA Dean the Dime Redwood would be my first choice from the looks of it...
Trans Black Flame redwood top looks Bad @ss...
i'am leaning towards the sc245, a comparably equiped soltero runs about $1000 more than a sc245.
If i wanted to write a song, When I started, would I/Should I write a few riffs or a chorus to write the lead parts over? Maybe, NVM, Here is a better question, Should i write a rythm part first and then write the lead over that? I guess that is what I was trying to say in the first question...Would that help me write the lead parts with less hassle? I am looking at this in terms of, will it be better to understand what the beat and rythm of the song will be like and there for, make writing a lead part easier? My friend came up with this idea and I think it might work pretty good.
Thanks
songs that sound the same
i'm sure one of these threads has already been made, but i couldn't find one and i thought it would be fun, so don't freak out.
i was on the way home today and i heard atreyus song falling down and couldn't help but think the beginning sounded almost identical to wolfmothers pyramid

other songs that sound similar?
So, I sold an item on ebay. The item got there, I got delivery confirmation, I received good feedback, Now Paypal says that the bidders bank has reversed the funds and The funds are on hold while they review the situation.
Man, It must be nice to be able to receive an item, take the money back, and not even be able to receive bad feedback. Even if the paypal gods decide to let me keep my (deserved) money, I cant touch it until they allow it.
Granted it was not a lot of money, but it could have been. Ebay needs to start watching out for their sellers instead of just their buyers. This is the second time I've had someone use this new crap policy to their advantage.
It's going to be inconvenient to demand money orders for everything...but I've done it before.
Looks like Washburn was trying to get Michael Amott too

I forgot how great this stuff is. I"m talking the Jim Martin era. I don't much care for the stuff after he left.
I'm totally jamming to Angel Dust right now.
Does anyone have one of these, or has held one/played it?
Dean Boca 12-String - Semi-hollowbody Electric Guitar
I have an opportunity to get one, mail order, for a pretty low price ($200). I realize it's probably not the most fantastic Dean on the planet, but is it worth having? I'm more concerned about the build and feel (can always change pickups later).
Input?
There's always lots of talk over what pickup to throw in the bridge (first person to say X2N FTW gets a cookie ), but I've run into the situation where I'm looking for a new neck pickup for most of my geets. I've had a Jazz and a '59 in guitars, and liked them both, but I'd like to branch out and try different pups. So what kind of passive neck pups have people tried and liked? Single coil or humbucker, doesn't matter, I could use suggestions for either .
Must have pedals?
by Osmo on Thu Dec 18, 2008 5:10 pm
So I have lately been updating my gear, and just got my 1st dean (yesterday)
so I was thinking, are there any "must have" pedals? And by that I dont mean pedals that are compulsory to be able to play, but so |
