Fender Cyclone Anyone? (NDC Pron)
by Warlock_340 on Thu May 01, 2008 4:17 am
So, a friend of mine's Cyclone had a gunky fretboard, so I gave him a hand and oiled it up, polished the frets for free. Before I took the strings off, I plugged it in and gave it a, wirle . Laughing

These guitars KICK ASS! Completely took me by surprise. Now, this is coming from a Metal head who's only geetars are a Warlock, ESP EX, and Dean ML. The neck was ok, nothing special, a bit too chunky for my taste, but everything else was amazing. Awesome weight, perfect balance, great lower fret access, and good looks. It's a shame Fender has discontinued it, but it makes me wanna get a used one or try out a Jaguar.

Another thing I like about it that I never knew about these fenders is the pup selector is real easy. Like on strats with the blade selector, if you're not fimiliar with them, you don't really know what pups your on, but this one is for... idiots, I guess you can say. Theres basically just 3 2 way toggle switches, and each one turns on/off a pup. Real nice and easy to select your tone. I was surprised at the nice tone from just the middle pup ALONE!

And also, this guitar made me think twice about single coils. Just cause they produce a clearer sound that isn't as fat, doesn't mean you can't use it for Metal. I could play metal riffs on it just fine, and tell you the truth, the bridge pup wasn't much different than my JB in the EX.

AMAZING guitar. I could defiantly see myself grabbing one in the future to break up my family of Metal guitars.

Anyone else have any experiences with them? OH! On to some crappy cell phone pron.

I gave it back to him today as it was all done. Theres a pic of the freshly oiled fretboard there.
Trouble with solder
by Berserker829 on Thu May 01, 2008 4:29 am
For some reason, I can never get my solder joints to be done smoothly. Yes my solder has flux, no I'm not using a weak soldering iron. It takes me a few seconds for the iron to heat up to the point where when solder touches it, it melts on contact. Yet for some reason I can never seem to get an easy, clean solder jonint. Some times I'll get it done only to find that it slipped off the pot. Anyone know what's wrong?

Naked FretBoards???
by TøRMeNTøR on Fri May 02, 2008 10:38 am
So I've been part of a few limited runs lately, and everytime, someone suggests a Naked Fretboard.

Can somebody explain to me how a naked fretboard is convenient in ANY way?

I know it can look VERY sleak and sexy, but can you really figure out what fret you're on? I know theres the little dots on top of the neck, but I don't usually look there when playing.

Can someone gimme pointers on how someone would go about using a naked fretboard?

I'm just confused thats all.

So, I got to try the new Kirk Hammett Randall....
by nicodemoscain on Fri May 02, 2008 3:59 pm
That thing is pretty damned sweet for what it is! I only got to play the secondary version that doesn't have the modules and all that, but it was still a treat to have been talking about it to my other guitar player and we randomly find one at my local shop.

The thing is the same damned size as my RX120D and it even looks like all they did was take a RX120 and shove Kirk's sound into it, but good LORD that thing has a far better sound! Right off the bat, I pulled all the EQ to 12 o'clock and cranked the gain and contour and I got that classic Metallica crunch. Really. Creeping Death, Whiplash, Master of Puppets...All right off the start. I wasn't expecting that at all. I fiddled around with it some more and was able to dial in the sound I use at home (Which is a mix of Metallica and Slipknot.) with my Digitech DF-7 and my Digitech RP-150 through my RX120D and I was blown away at how much better it sounded coming from that amp running stright from my guitar to the head. (And it was my guitar, too. We were coming back from practice and we had all of our equipment still in the truck, so I was able to play my own stuff.) This thing almost sounds better than my Peavey VK...ALMOST! I'd love to hear that amp with tubes.

The only real downfall and problem I had with it was the fact that the response from the EQ dials was crap. The treble, mids, and bass only really did anything when you were either right towards the top of the dial, or at the flat-ass bottom. The contour wasn't that much better, but you could get a far better range, IMO, on that amp than I ever could from my RX120. The double gain controls were neat to have, but why would you have the same two gains to change from? Wouldn't you rather have a gain and a boost to that gain for solos? It seems kinda silly to have the same gain channel for both. And the gain settings for the amp don't really go anywhere. It's either hard crunch or quiet blues. Bleh. (Still, most people are only gonna buy this thing for hard gain anyways.)

I am floored by those amps now, though. I am even in awe at the fact that they are in a decent price range, too! (The dude said they had them for $700 even.) I am now pondering the idea of dumping the RX120 for it. Seriously, that thing kicks ass. Has anyone else tried one of these? Or even one of the $2000 models? Jesus, what the heck do those things sound like?

I've had the 85 in the bridge of my '79 ML for quite some time
and I don't regret getting it.

but ... I need something in the neck as well and seeing as the 85 has alnico magnets
the best bet would be an 60A, which is said to be closer to a PAFish sound.
I started to play with the idea to have the guitar loaded with another 60A,
and have the tone knob connected to the neck only, that way I could get
the woman tone, or atleast something similar. maybe have them out of phase
ala Peter Green(and Gary Moore)

but anyway ... should I stick to the 85 in the bridge or should I exchange
it for another 60A ?

Cool

X2 woes
by Scrapnasty on Fri May 02, 2008 7:08 pm
Well Martin and I went to pick up my X2 from the shop today. Boy did he have some news for me.

Apparently the previous owner opened the head up and fu[i][\i]cked with the insides. The tech said that parts were changed and wires were crossed. It was a horrible mess.

The worst part is he told me my X2 was pretty much unfixable. The clean channel works just fine so I can throw a pedal infront but that ruins the point of having an X2 to begin with. I'm kind of bummed but not to much. I didn't invest a great deal of money into it.

Martin said he'd pull some strings and see what he can do. Till then he lent me his Krank Jr and a FBD guitar. The guy is an ace friend. If your ever in the Texas area hook up with him, he'll show you a great time.

Also anyone know where I can find some spare X2 circuit boards? Laughing

Suprise! You got drunk and bid on a guitar! NDC
by formula73 on Fri May 02, 2008 11:35 pm
Well, last weekends alcohol-fueled ebay idiocy turned out VERY well. I picked up a Squier Tele Deluxe II with a set of those Duncan Designed P90s and it flat out SMOKES. Maybe I should get drunk more often. The neck feels great, the fretwork is smooth and straight, the neck pocket is tighter than Borat claims his sister is, and it's got just enough heft in the body to balance out pretty well. It even stays in tune!

I'm quite impressed with these P90-2 pickups. I don't see them listed on the main Duncan site, but I figure they're the same as the P90-1 with ears attached for pickguard mounting. They're loud and clear with cutting mids and a tight bottom-pretty much perfect, IMHO. I don't have much experience with the import Duncan stuff, but if these are any indication, they're holding up their end of the deal over there.

I'd post a picture of it, but it looks pretty much like the stock photos except it's covered in smudges and fingerprints from being beaten up over the last couple hours.

Well...ok.

Okay, I got royally f%&ked this week, and my new Randall cab is a no show for my show tonight Mad

I have access to a single speaker 4 ohm bass cab - can my 300w Warhead safely power this?!?

From my understanding, the Warhead runs at 4 ohms when each of the 2 speaker outs is plugged into an 8 ohm cab each.

BTW, this will be just used for stage volume & color the sound a bit..., I want to split my bass signal in 2 - 1 going to my Trace Elliot bass amp, and the other into the Warhead tonite.

My new hotness. Just got this from a fellow forumite. It is just what the doctor ordered. I have been trying to get one of these since they came out. Randy (Bucketass) called me last month to let me know he played one and it was one of the most awesome guitars he had ever played and he thought it was perfect for me. He has been trying to help me find the right guitar. I was now on a mission to find one. Everyone was sold out and backordered. Luckily Jaye here on the forum contacted me after he sold his black one and offered the white one to me. Since he lives down the street from me I couldn't say no. Well almost couldn't. I didn't have the money. LOL Luckily my wonderful girlfriend came to the rescue. She now gets my check from Uncle Sam when it gets here. LOL Here are some photos. Pups are EMG 81/60. Yes that is an ebony fret board. This guitar comes with an awesome G&G case too. I played out with it the day after I got it. It performed flawlessly.

Tho whom it may concern: Peavey JSX Review
by GrantS on Sun May 04, 2008 1:29 am
Hey all,

Long time lurker; I rarely post, but here goes.

I have read a lot of guitar and amp reviews on this forum which have been very helpful offering insight into what makes a guitar or amp rock/suck according to people's opinions. It is my aim with this post to hopefully give you a little bit more information on a Peavey JSX and what it has to offer (whether it's for you or not... hopefully a cheat guide for you.)

At GC a few weeks back I had played a 6505+, Mesa Dual Rect, and the JSX in search of a better metal tone (than my RG100ES currently.) Long story short, I settled on the JSX; however I didn't purchase then.

I went home and looked all over craigslist and ebay seeing prices ranging from the sale price of ~ $1400 to $650 (believe it or not.. the guy actually decided not to sell it after I contacted him, probably wise on his part.)

Anyhow, I found one on craigslist in my area selling for $800. I haggled him down to $750 (he had a 4 m/o baby girl to support, I felt bad even taking it at this price.) I'm informing you of the price only for the purpose of knowing that it is possible to buy it at that price; used. It was missing the front mirror plate, but hey... aesthetics < tone .

He took me to an industrial area where he worked which gave me the privilege of cranking the JSX there. I was happy to say that the 2 JSX's sounded identical ( i say this because of the discrepancy in sound over the 5150's, 6505's, II's, +'s... you know). Keep in mind, i've only tried two, but the two sounded the same. Anyways, I purchased it off him footswitch, speaker cable and JSX.

I brought it home and cranked it; now to the stuff you probably care about.

CLEAN: First, let me elaborate on the clean channel. It sparkles, plain and simple. Some people hate that, others love it. I find it to be awesome. I EQ'd it correctly to my neck pickup (I like the neck pup for cleans) rather to my bride (BL USA 500XL) and it shines.

I've heard that this channel was built to react well with pedals, so that is what I did. I hooked up my pedal board in this order: Tuner, Phaser, Wah, Delay, 7 band EQ, Noise suppressor. The channel reacted very very well to all the pedals, most notably (I think obviously..) the phaser and the delay.

CRUNCH: The Crunch channel... Ahh. Very excellent tone. All the knobs (as per the Clean channel btw,) are very sensitive and seem to have a very wide range. The added "FAT" switch option also saturates or soaks the gain nicely depending on what your goal is. The tone is heavy, but not melt your face off heavy... a good OD/Distortion pedal in front of it would probably get you the chainsaw tone if that is your goal. The mids can also be messed with to get you to a near Metallica tone, although I'm not interested. Rolling back the volume knobs on both neck/bridge pickups, you can get a very nice Peavey Delta Blues style distortion.

ULTRA: The Ultra channel is identical in EQ to the crunch channel, it just had more gain. Great for soloing and leads. As some reviews I have read have said, it does sound a little bit thin, but for me I'm not going to want break down style tone on a solo, are you?

The resonance and presence knobs are perfect for shaping the overall sound and react very creatively when the treble knob is poked to different places on all channels, gives you that much more of tonal range.

The Noise Gate is great... I get no hiss, buzz or fuss from the amp whatsoever and whatever volume. However, after the GE 7 band EQ is stomped on the noise does increase as I have that pedal also as a boost. To remedy that problem I have a noise suppressor pedal behind that one.

The FX loop on the amp is neat with the standard send/ return level. You can also activate the FX loop via the footswitch. I'm sure this could come in handy and get creative if people wanted a certain set of pedals in front of the amp (say for dist) and a set of pedals in the loop (for clean) or something or other.

The amp is built like a tank and is very sturdy... and heavy. Ohm's are also switchable between 4, 8, 16. I hope there's not anything I'm forgetting. Currently don't have access to a camera or sound clip abilities, but this is the only guitar form I go to/care about, so when the time comes I'll know where the clips will go.

Thanks brothers.

Yeah, I know. Someone else got one too. I've actually had mine for a few weeks now. It's honestly the best guitar I own now. It trumps my USA Fender's, my Razorback, and my Ibanez custom 7 string.

My buddy Fred at my local music store has a white pickguard ordered for me. It'll look much sexier with it being all white.

I think a lot of people on here would really like the guitar. It has a higher heel cut (like the Heafy guitar) so getting up to the 22nd is a breeze (as so it should always be). It has a belly cut too, which is awesome. Not some big awkward block hanging down from your neck. I don't know how I feel about the EMG's. It's my first EMG loaded guitar and I really don't care for them that much.

Overall, this guitar is a 11/10. The fact that it doesn't have Jim Root, slipknot, or Stone sour marked all over it is a HUGE plus. Just a simple signature on the back of the headstock and nothing more.

Just look how much better it looks all white

I just watched it. Really cool, but I thought that USAs were made out of one piece of wood. Can someone please explain why people whine about imports being made out of several pieces of wood when the USAs are too?

Tried the search and didn't find thread about this though I believe that there already is one. Anyway. Here's a pic of my old pedalboard. Will post a pic of the new one when I get my board from our rehearsal place.

Know What...
by BTMN on Mon May 05, 2008 2:39 am
I like about Sundays? I usually spend the day playing guitars not out in the livingroom on stands. Today I played a few of my "orphans". Woke up and scored another "orphan" off Evilbay and it sent me to some of the case cuties I have.

The new Orphan, a late '90's Hamer Flat top Sunburst import. Issue at 12 fret but fixable and worth the money I belive.

Image

Broke out the 1996 Dean USA Caddy, a 1993 USA Hamer Special P90 with the low E tuned to C#, Dean Korean made P90 EVO Goldtop, 2003 Time Capsule Dean USA Z, and Late90's Hamer Korean made Special HB.
I also played my '79 Hamer Standard tuned half step down and my 2001 Hamer Standard Tuned to Standard A. This was a great way to spend the day after running some errands and doing a lil work for an hour, play guitars for an hour thing from 2pm-8pm.

I played the major and minor scales in various patterns and riffs in every place I could think of. Not really challenging to most but oh so fun when you find a cool riff or groove. Kept it in the Less is More State of mind. Thing G chords strummed and allowed to ring like AC/DC. The P90 guitars just sang. Gotta get me a metronome. Twisted Evil Shocked Razz Laughing Cool

BTW, I even got outside for awhile to enjoy some sunshine.....Dang, it was warm today.... Twisted Evil Razz Shocked

HardTail PRS Wana Be?
by Dusty Rhodes on Mon May 05, 2008 3:00 am
I've had my USA Amber Burst HardTail for about three years now and have throughly enjoyed every minute I've played it. At the time I bought it I really didn't know much about PRS guitars and was basicly a Strat and Les Paul kind of guy. I liked the HardTail because of the look, playability and tone.

Recently I have heard on more than one occation that the Dean HardTail was just a PRS wana be and Deans in general were pretty much just entry level head-banger guitars. This not only made me take offense by that comment but also made me second guess my initial love affair with the guitar.

Putting all emotion aside, I would be interested in points of view from other fellow HardTail owners about the PRS comparison.

Warhead Vs Rg100es HELP!!!
by classic_rocker978 on Mon May 05, 2008 5:15 am
Right now I'm using a 1st generation Randall Warhead combo... sounds pretty good, but Im ALWAYS fiddling with knobs I think there might be too many knobs for me lol I change my tone more than any person I know... I've been considering getting a Randall Rg100es to replace my warhead... I want a tone Similiar to Alexi Laiho of children of bodom... Can the Rg100es do this? And what are your guys thoughts on each amp? Which would you rather own?

Edit - and which years Are the best sounding Rg100's? Is there really a a big difference between them? Ill happily wait for a certain year to appear on ebay Very Happy

What combo amp for $150 or less
by Lon on Mon May 05, 2008 1:04 pm
Please don't say the Microcube because I think they sound like crap. I'm giving a nice Stagg Strat copy to a friend's son and was going to give him my Fender Champion 30 amp but just can't part with it, so I've got to buy him one. I want a decent amp that actually usable. I've looked at the smaller Vox and Crate modeling amps and they seem decent. Don't care for the little Marshalls at all. I'd like to buy new but that's not that important. What else is out there that I might get for this price? Thanks.

Guitar Insurance
by Anonymous on Mon May 05, 2008 4:29 pm
Does anyone here have any good suggestions for Guitar Insurance? I have looked into adding them onto a home/renters policy, however it's not enough insurance. My current policy is now outrageous, and want to do this right. Insured for full-replacement value even if a friend on vacation borrowed one and accidentally dropped it in a campfire kind of insurance.

All advice experience is MUCH appreciated, please PM or post, thanks in advance guys.
How many of you guys work in a guitar shop?
by raz-zx on Mon May 05, 2008 8:38 pm
In particular an independent retailer? For the record I do, and do you know what really gets on my gazongas is the way people now just go an buy stuff online without even tryin it, then complaining when it isnt what they wanted, then because once the company signs it to the courier its the couriers responsibility, then when the customer signs for it, it becomes their responsibility, and wonder why they have a hard time tring to sort it all out. There are so many reasons to buy at a real shop, and independents are the best! Its just becoming pointless as we are seeming to become a showroom for other peoples web sites. We compete like hell, and we do have a web store, but people just dont seem to want to have the human contact with real shops! They seem to think that ordering online is ALWAYS cheaper, and that there is no change in the level of service from walking in to a real shop, trying a few out, having a good chat, getting the right advice, and being able to go back to the same person if there is a problem, or you want to know what strings to choose or how to alter the action etc, or clicking buy and waiting for it in the post!

Not wanting to rant, but since i have started.... I dont know if any of you read Total Guitar but this month they have come along an printed an article about how to buy a guitar from eBay... Pretty soon there will be no independent retailers, and already some of the big chain stores have either gone bust, gone into liquidation, or administration!

It really p*sses me off!!!!

Missing my Deans guitars 2nite :O
by bassmantim71 on Tue May 06, 2008 1:32 am
So 2 weeks ago I sold my TLTML & my FBD in order to fund some new guitars. I was fine until Saturday as I was only playing my basses in preperation for a show with my band. So now the show is over and I'm chillin' at home with no guitars to play..., looks like I'll be drivin' to NY tomorrow to pick up my #7 Slime and a black MLF that I bought off of forum brothers.

I guess next time I decide to sell gear, I'll have to plan for a back up Dean guitar Surprised

Whats the most diverse dean?
by cerebrix1 on Tue May 06, 2008 8:55 am
just curious as to what you guys think on this one. i dont thin weve ever sat down and discussed it either.

What do YOU think is the most tonally diverse guitar in the dean line? From metal to blues, from folk to rock. What single guitar can pull off the most?

(disclaimer)

were not going to discuss the players technique, or the rig being played thru. this is totally a 6 string guitar discussion about guitars that are available at the time this poll was first run =p.

also note, i cut the poll off at this number because i maxed out the poll. so things like the razorback must be included as an ml for example.
Wondering about the 79's
by Anonymous on Tue May 06, 2008 12:06 pm
I'm thinking of trading in my ibanez for a '79 ml, and I was wondering what the hardcases that come with them are like. I mean, do they fit the guitar snugly? Are they realiable and can they take a beating? Basically need-to-know stuff since stock hardcases aren't usually described in detail. Thanks in advance. Very Happy

Hey P90Z Owners....
by BTMN on Wed May 07, 2008 12:00 am
Three years ago The P90 Z was posted as a custom run to be done. IIRC, it was like the thrid or so run done after a Silverburst ML and something else that was done before I hit the forum. It took about 8 weeks to get the idea approved and and get the run carried by a dealer and the general public here interested enough so we could get the run done. I've always maintained it was cause you guys bought one I was able to get one made for me. THANKS!!!!

Two things, who has one, and did you get your photo sets? I know the answers for some but have never known who all owns one. These I know of the 17 for sure: Chuck, Wayne, myself, Ryan has Jag Panzer's, Bri54, Bradworld, Ffej, Jeep, F73's is on at least it's 3rd owner, TNVOL, Sprinter, Jaxx, Ryandante, Trapper189, and the other 3 I probably know but cant guess at the moment. Anyone? Twisted Evil Razz Cool

by Serbusfish on Wed May 07, 2008 1:05 am
Ok so I tune up my guitar (A#, F, A#, D#, G, C) perfectly in tune, my tuner reads these notes out when i pluck each string, yet its not in tune, or should I say, there is something not right with the A# and F strings. When I play a powerchord you can hear instantly its not tuned properly, yet my tuner is telling me it is...wtf? anyone have any idea whats going on?

This post is a call to action for the Dean Guitar Community, Armadillo Enterprises, Inc., Elliott Rubinson, and all members of the Dean Guitar Forum.

The recent cyclone in Myanmar has resulted in an unprecedented degree of destruction and loss of life. It is the duty of those of us who are able, to give what we can toward the relief effort.

Unless you have experienced a taste of what a storm like this can do it is hard to understand the scale of destruction.

Please allow me to make a comparison:
In August of 1992 ml_pilot and myself were part of one of the first relief columns to arrive in Homestead, Florida after the passage of Hurricane Andrew. Even though the USA is far from the state of a third world country the suffering and destruction we witnessed was truly beyond description. The nearly complete destruction of infrastructure in many areas where the storm passed made something as simple as driving a mile down the road, or finding a drink of water almost impossible. There were NO street signs left anywhere, No street signals. The chaos caused by the lack of preparation made giving aid even more difficult. Even in a modern American city, one of the first groups we helped had not had water or food for more than 48 hours. The desperation, hunger, anger, and above all fear in their eyes was a sight that has been burned into my brain for the rest of my days. I will never forget a certain young lady who had lost EVERYTHING, everything that is, except for her little white cat which she had clung to during the whole storm. When I handed her a five pound bag of cat food (very much a last second addition to the load in my van) she embraced me with heaving sobs of gratitude. You would think I had given her all the gold in the world. Sometime the simplest things can mean the most. I promise you that conditions there were far far worse than the media portrayed them.
I know I speak for Neil (ml_pilot) as well as myself when I say that participating in the Andrew relief effort was a life changing experience.
I could go on and on about Andrew, but stop and think for a moment. Myanmar is NOT part of the USA. They do not have anything like our infrastructure. Life there, even in the best of times, is far more difficult than anything we will experience in our lives. Even something as simple as transportation in the delta there requires a huge portion of the resources of the average citizen.

The true extent of the death toll in Myanmar may never be known. Some current estimates are running at more than 100,000. (I know for a FACT the true death tolls in Andrew and Katrina were “downsized” dramatically by the official count. If you feel the need to PM me on that one go ahead.)

It is true that the rulers of Myanmar are little more than petty tyrants, Please do not let that block your sight of the horrible suffering of the common man in the stricken areas.

PLEASE give what you are able. Below is a list of aid agencies that I blatantly copied from msnbc.

Lame
by pstamato75 on Thu May 08, 2008 4:09 am
What kind of lame excuse for a press release is that?

"Just throw some words down so it looks like we are saying something, while not really saying anything at all."

Is anyone surprised that it is locked, not allowing anyone to comment on it? Double lame.

I know this post will be deleted quite soon, but it should stay. This is as good a thread as any other here.

Having said that, reading the "press release", Rolling Eyes I kind of got the feeling that Dean Z. was more or less relieved of his duties after the move to consolidate in Tampa (which was long overdue).

That's how it made me feel, although I could be completely wrong, but since nothing was really explained whatsoever, jumping to conclusions and theorizing is all we can do.

Anyone had any experience with them? Im currently searching for a decent bridge pickup for my 79MLF, was going to get a Dimebucker but ive had some people recommend me check out Bare knuckles, particularly the Warpig pickup. Has anyone used this pickup? Would one be good for down tuned modern metal?
Dean quality control
by slaytanic on Thu May 08, 2008 4:57 pm
Over the time Ive been here I have noticed several complaints about imports whether it be about floyds or flaws in finish, wiring, ect. Seeing them in multiple threads would make any of these complaints hard to track for the company if in fact theya re looking for our responses.

Having never been to Dean in Tampa, I dont know what kind of quality control they have there over the imports. I assume there is a guy or two looking over the imports with a fine tooth comb.

Heres my suggestion. If Dean really wants to be on top of the game with the imports and wants our opinions on things whether it be good or bad although I think the opinions of the bad things should be highlighted here though then the sugestion I am making should be considered.

Wouldnt it make more sense to have the person or persons that are actually looking at these import guitars come here and make a post so we can tell them in one thread what they need to be looking out for? It just seems that some get thier guitars, some are satisfied and some are not. We know there has been quality control issues in the past, why not talk to the people that are buying them and are noticing these things and then concentrate on fixing the problems.

I know people contact the dealer they bought the guitar from when there is an issue, but in my opinion the dealer isnt the one that can fix the problems. It has to come from quality control first. Eliminate the message man in some cases and go straight to the source. Good idea or bad?

Stayed home from school today cause I have a mild cold and after last nights concert I really just didn't want to go to school, AND cause I was expecting a guitar, well, at about 8:30 today the Fed Ex truck pulled in, I put my dog in my room, grabbed the package, got a camera, got my knife, and proceeded with the opening. Cool

If you haven't guessed, it's an ESP V-500. ESPs top of the LTD line V. My first higher grade guitar. IT RIPPS! This thing is so amazing. The balance, whoa my god, sits on your leg so nice, better than an ML (yeah Dimesheep, I went there) and the weight is PERFECT! Nice and big body, and the neck while it isn't as thin as say a VMNT, still is amazing. Especially after I took some 4 grade steel wool to it (it was a bit sticky out of the box, but it's all good now)

Lower fret access is awesome. Now I can finally get down there and just go nuts (which is what I wanted) and with the 24 frets I can now play some Megadeth stuff and have more room to just dick around with.

Now, IIRC, it has dual EMG 81s. The EMG in the neck is nice for my metal sound, it cooperates with my amp pretty good, but, I should say these ARENT very good for cleans. Some time I plan to get a JB/Jazz in there and sell off these ones, but they are doing the job right now.

All in all, I love this guitar. I gave myself the decision to wait 3-4 weeks and get a VMNT1 (I would get the AOD or the GOW) or get one of these now, I don't regret it. Am I saying this is better than a VMNT1? No, I've never played a VMNT1. But I love this guitar enough to be able to say I'm happy with my decision, and THAT'S what matters.

Now I gotta get a case for this. This thing aint going out of the house until I HAVE A CASE FOR IT! I love it too much to risk it.

So yeah, that's my new guitar. ESP stands and delivers once again.

And BIG thanks to Jason @ Drum City Guitar Land. Awesome guy. Top Notch dealer. I'll be making all my Non-Dean purchases through him.

Once great players that gone off the deep end...
by Blazer on Fri May 09, 2008 2:21 am
Let's talk about the players that were victims of the Rock N roll lifestyle and sank in deep and never were able to get it back on track again.

I'll start with the guy who thought he'd achieved instant stardom when replacing a well known member of what was then the biggest metal band on earth.

Image
Vinnie Vincent.

When Vinnie Vincent was hired by Kiss he brought the shred element in that band and a songsmith with kickass tunes which made all the difference in getting Kiss's credibility back on track with two KILLER albums "Creatures of the night" and "Lick it up" for a while Vinnie Vincent was the "hot new guy"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yptx5PX-VIs
Vinnie Vincent doing a solo during the 1984 "Lick it up" tour

However, Vinnie forgot the first rule: you have to pay your dues if you want to make it big. When Eric Carr replaced Peter Criss, Carr made himself loved by the fans by being humble, outgoing and accepting that the road to stardom would take small steps. Even now seventeen years after his death Eric Carr is remembered by Kiss fans as a true member of the band, one that paid his dues and enjoyed the merits.

Vinnie Vincent however went into instant-diva. Talked big about himself, treated fans and other bandmembers like s#%t, raring to living the life of a star before he even got on the road with Kiss. Gene Simmons described Vinnie in the "kiss exposed" documentary as the "Most self-destructive" person he knew.

As we all know now it wasn't Vinnie who would become the accepted Kiss guitarist, the one who was worthy of taking Ace Frehley's place, that honor went to Bruce Kulick.

So what is Vinnie doing now? Not much really except from making appearences at Kiss expo's where he appears donning the make up and acting like a star.

And as for his playing?

Anyone else have issues creating music with other people?
by Trendkiller96 on Fri May 09, 2008 6:42 am
I'm sure I'm a real minority here, since most of the musicians I've seen and played with have no problem creating tunes together right on the spot. For some reason, I can't do this. I need to be alone in a quiet room with Guitar Pro to write any of my own stuff. When people try to jam with me spontaneously I just go blank. What little I CAN come up with usually sounds incredibly boring and stale, but the people I HAVE played with usually really like the stuff I write on my own when I present it to them.

I don't know if this is a problem or not, I just wanted to know if anyone else on here was in a similar situation.
Solos.
by SlashinSlaughter on Fri May 09, 2008 7:29 am
So yeah I suck at soloing, and I really need to fix that. Anybody know some songs with some easy-medium solos?

Recently I've been trying to play some songs, and I can never finish the whole song because I can't play the solos Mad , and I end up just knowing some riffs. And I feel so noobish when I cant learn a full song.

Or does anyone know some like excerises I could so to help me improve my speed, besides playing scales as fast as I can? Rolling Eyes Confused

I appreciate any help and/or advice. Cool

by deansman90 on Sat May 10, 2008 7:21 am
Looking for a guitar for under 400. Doesnt really matter what brand it is..I just want it to have all or some of these features

I'm looking for a guitar with a classic body shape (SG, Les Paul, Strat (not super strat unless it is much like a real strat) Explorer. No V's.
Set or neck thru neck...and If it has to be a bolt on I guess it's fine
Floyd Rose tremolo or similar.
Locking nut ouviously
High gain pickup I guess since there are none that have more of a classic crunch with a metal feeling too.
At least one humbucking pickup. Maybe an H/S/H set up

Hard to find? Can it be found?
Show me some guitars that fit my description of what I want.

Well I got board yesterday and this happened...(pic)
by Bullet on Sun May 11, 2008 3:54 pm
I repainted my Vendetta XM from black to white. Because, as I said, I got board and had access to spray paint. I'll have to get strings for it tomorrow, since there isn't any guitar shops open on Sunday around me.

BTW the marks on the left side are from camera flash, they aren't there in person.

Dean Sighting At Wal Mart
by Wombat on Mon May 12, 2008 1:47 am
I was with my daughter at Wal Mart the other night, (a place you will very rarely find me) And the shape of a Dean guitar caught my eye. The silhoutte of an ML was prominately featured on a Hannah Montana jersey.
My rig is finally completed... Pic added
by Anonymous on Mon May 12, 2008 2:16 am
After years of searching and thousands of dollars being wasted on gear, I have finally came to my senses; and have came to my senses in a very 70's kind of way. I got to thinking of my favorite players and how they did things... Four bands came to mind...

Tool
Thin Lizzy
Led Zeppelin
The Melvins

They didn't really use too many effects, Les Pauls were in play and volume knobs and one channel amps were played with. And one in particular made me buy a Rat. So here you have it...

Guitars:
1997 Gibson Les Paul Classic
2006 Gibson SG Standard
Backups:
2006 Fender Jimmie Vaughan Stratocaster
2004 Dean Hardtail Select

Effects:
ProCo Vintage Rat w/ LM308 Chip
Dunlop Zakk Wylde Crybaby

Amp:
1968 Fender Bassman rehoused in a Dual Showman head modded for Marshall Cathode Follower, a Tube Rectifier, and spring reverb
Marshall 1960a Cabinet

Image

I've definitely slimmed it down quite a bit... No rack gear, not an ungodly large effects chain... Just the most natural, rich sound I could get with as little as possible. I'm a very very satisfied person right now!

Talkbox question
by Bullet on Mon May 12, 2008 3:23 am
From what I gather from reading about them you have to have a pa system of some sort to use them. Is it possible to use a talkbox with out one, or is there any kind of them manufactured specially like this.
Gretsch guitars..
by Dean_Lefty14 on Mon May 12, 2008 6:24 am
Hey guys, i have been looking at gretsch guitars, i played a few and they were really comfortable, and i actually kinda dig the tone

problem is... i only play metal and a few other songs that arent metal, so the tone wont really work with the songs i already know and the songs i write

i wanted to get into playin the blues, but the only people i have watched play had either strats or a gibby firebird

i understand i can learn more types.

but from the point im at now, what kinda stuff would they be good for?
are they good for the blues?

i understand this is kinda a below 70 IQ type question, and its 1:30 in the morn right now so i might not make too much sense, but i dont know how else to put it...

if i like the feel, would it be worth purchasing one with the stuff i know right now? (thats the best way i can explain it)
Gibson/Epiphone... (bb king)
by Dean_Lefty14 on Mon May 12, 2008 6:40 am
Yes, i know its the dean forum.... but quick question

the BB King guitar, lucille

i read somewhere its a solid body, but then i saw its a semi-hollow w.o. F-holes

what is it? anybody know for sure??

i read that its a es-355, which it said was a solidbody, but then i looked it up and its like a rare semi-hollow

so im confused on the matter

what is lucille?? (the guitar type i mean)

and then also, is that the guitar that bb king uses always? or what else does he use?

Is Mick Mars with Fender/Charvel?
by Twenty23Three on Mon May 12, 2008 7:45 pm
Ino over the years Mick has used hundreds of different guitars. (My favorites being his kramers) but does he have a contract with fender now?

Because any recent footage ive seen its all he plays when he used to be quite happy to pull out a Les Paul or such like

And heres another thing, if he isnt under contract with them, or anyone else for that matter, would anyone be intrested in seeing him rocking a dean with motley crue working on a new album?

maybe put a soltero or ml in his hands? just a thought

Why are Bass Whammy's so darn expensive?!?
by bassmantim71 on Mon May 12, 2008 10:51 pm
Okay, these always pop up on EvilBay, but IMO, the Bass Whammy is just a Whammy II pedal with a few different functions.

Bass Whammy, $600 - $650 seems to be the going rate:

http://montreal.en.craigslist.ca/msg/671702457.html

Whammy II, these go for $150 - $175 lately:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Digitech-Whammy-II_W0QQitemZ220232880738QQihZ012QQcategoryZ22669QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I know that the Whammy II has an IVL chip in it (like the WH-1), but I know that it doesn't compare in sound with the original for some reason. Here's the good one, made in Canada, these are getting real hard to find these days:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Digitech-Whammy-1-Original-With-Original-Power-Supply_W0QQitemZ170218269637QQihZ007QQcategoryZ22669QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Anyone know why that Bass Whammy is so disirable?!? Did they only release it once, and that was it Question

NGD: v79
by Mudder on Tue May 13, 2008 2:16 am
Hi all. I'm officially a Dean owner. UPS was kind enough to drop off a new V79 blueburst. I went over this pretty thoroughly and really, it's a great guitar. Frets and finish work are excellent. Neck needed no adjustment, only string height. After tuning and intonation I put it through the paces and it comes up a winner. Great player, the neck is a good size for my hands which aren't meathooks. I'm not sure what shape they're calling the neck but I'd say a D or flat C shape, much like my Hamer, comfy. Block inlays are well done.

Stock electronics are as expected, not bad, I had hoped the volume pots would be isolated to the respective pickup, but thats not a big deal. Stock pickups are ok, the bridge has a thick bottom and interesting upper midrange while the neck is a little fuzzy. Good enough for me to leave in for now.

It's bigger to wear than I anticipated, but it's light enough and hangs well. Awesome access to upper frets. I'm fast becoming a V fan.

Let me say the case this came in is killer. Full sized rectangle, no fooling with V shapes, really a great piece.

All in all a great guitar, not just for an import.
Kawai Guitar
by Hot Sauce on Tue May 13, 2008 3:58 am
Went to the pawn shop today and discoved what might be the coolest looking guitar i've ever seen...For $100 (Yes, it will be mine.) As far as i've read, it's a Japanese guitar made in the 60's/70's. It's a Fender Jaguar shape with an ENORMOUS Fender style HS. It had a nice, chunky neck and a decent feel. The mojo? It was imminent. The finish was cracked, it was beaten, scratched, everything. That's what I like my guitars to look like. To hell with the abalone binding and inlays with fancy quilts and flames or shiny, glossy finishes. Beaten up guitars is where it's at for me, and i'm about to get one. Cool
Well, I did it, I bought one....

A Bugera 6262.

Ordered it from American Musical on Saturday about 6 PM. Gonna be on my doorstep later today. Awesome speed for free ground shipping.

Also, this is my second expensive purchase from American Musical. My first was my Fernandes, now this amp. I got a personal call from them telling my amp was shipped and I'll see it tomorrow. Also they were wondering if I had any questions and they are gonna call me next week to see how I like the amp.

I love this company.

Also, the fuses, cause they were having problems. They are 3.15A slow burns right?

Black Gold ML/z
by Master of Frets on Tue May 13, 2008 9:49 pm
I was considering getting the z in a few months but then i ran into the ml on ultimate guitar and now i think I'm gonna get that. Are they still available and how much do they cost? Were can i get it? Ive heard that the pickups aren't too hot. Would i be able to switch pickups and put the gold covers on the new pickups because i want all the hardware to be gold because that looks wicked sick. Does anybody have pron of either guitar that you could please show me preferable of the neck(i want to see how thick it is and how smooth it is where it meets the body). Thanks.

I am still a n00b in regards to tubes, however I finally "get it." Within minutes realized how expressive they are, and how they act. SS is very deceiving in this respect. I hope it doesn't drive me nuts! Anyway just thought I would share, obligatory pr0n below. Anyone looking for a class A tube amp, this thing ROCKS! It's dirty, throaty, and can get glassy clean - add a little distortion, adjust the volume to the breakway peak of the speakers and it flat-out ROCKS.

I need a really good cab for this thing - if playing through that cheap Crate sounds this good, I can only imagine how good this can get! at 20lbs or less it's easy to carry too!!!!

Tone or No Tone
by slaytanic on Wed May 14, 2008 1:30 am
Well I was jsut changing out the pots in my newly aquired Stealth to CTS brand 500k and found that they did make a big improvement. I think ill order these for all my other guitars. Now I dont usually mess with wiring for the pots, I normally just wire em up how the manufacture recommends. I decided to unhook the capacitor on the tone knob and WOW!! Everything is so much more open and clear sounding. I tell you right now, the tone knob are getting unhooked in my other guitars. This made a big improvement in the overall sound. I had heard about people unhooking the tone knob before but I never tried it. I very rarely use it so I cant believe it took me this long to figure it out. From now on, any guitar I get, thats the first thing to go.

So, have any of you done this?

BUGERA 333XL HEAD REVIEW
by BLOODROOT on Wed May 14, 2008 8:56 pm
OK. IN CONTINUATION OF MY PREVIOUS REVIEW. I BOUGHT ONE OF THESE BEFORE SO I CAN LEAVE AN AMP AT MY DRUMMERS HOUSE FOR REHEARSAL. I DONT WANT TO LEAVE A 2 GRAND ENGL THERE. SO I BUY ONE FROM SAM ASH. THEY SENT ME THE 2X12 COMBO INSTEAD. SO MANY PEOPLE WERE HAVING ISSUES BLOWING FUSES , I DID NOT WANT TO KEEP THE WRONG AMP INCASE I NEEDED WARRANTY. SO I SENT IT BACK AFTER 31 DAYS. YOU HAVE 45 DAY RETURN POLICY BUT I DIDNT WANT TO FORGET SO I SENT IT BACK. SO ONCE I DID THAT, THEY WERE ON BACK ORDER SO I CANCELLED MY ORDER TO GET THE HEAD SHIPPED TO ME. MEANTIME I BOUGHT A 5150II HEAD AGAIN. SOLD IT ON EBAY FOR 100 BUX MORE THAN I BOUGHT IT FOR , JUST COULDNT GET INTO IT AFTER HAVING ENGLS. NOT THAT THE 5150II WAS BAD. IT WAS GREAT BUT TOO MUCH A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN IT AND THE ENGLS TO KEEP IT.

SO I ORDERED THE BUGERA AGAIN. I TRULY BELIEVE THE ISSUES PEOPLE HAVING WITH THEIR FUSES BLOWING IS RELATED TO 2 THINGS. CHEAP TUBES AND OPERATOR ERROR. THATS NOT A SLAM TO ANYONE. I THINK IT IS TRUE AND NO ONE WILL ADMIT TO IT. YOU GOTTA USE THE STANDBY SWITCH. YOU CANT LEAVE IT IN YOUR CAR FOR HOURS IN THE COLD BRING IT IN AND TURN IT RIGHT ON. YOU CANT HAVE IT ON AND OFF OF STAND BY AND JUST START PULLING YOUR CORD OUT OF THE INPUT. IVE NEVER HAD ISSUES DOING THAT BUT I HEAR IT IS BAD FOR THE CIRCUIT ON TUBES AMPS.

FOR THE GUYS WHO THINK THEY ARE PEAVEY CLONES THEY ARE WRONG. IVE OWNED THE ULTRA PLUS, 5150, 5150II AND XXX. AND HAVE HAD THEM ALL OPEN. THE BUGERA LOOKS NOTHING LIKE A PEAVEY INSIDE. THERE ARE SIMILARITIES TO THE CHANNELS AND EFX LOOP ON THE OUTSIDE BUT THE CIRCUIT BOARDS AND COMPONENT OUTLAY IS NO WHERE NEAR SIMILAR. THERE IS ONLY ONE IC IN THE ENTIRE AMP OF THE BUGERA. THE PEAVEYS HAVE QUITE A FEW. ENGLS HAVE A TON MORE WHICH IS ODD CAUSE THE ENGLS SOUND BETTER AND IT COULD BE FOR SWITCHING CHANNELS AND STUFF. I DONT KNOW. THE IC ON THE BUGERA IS FOR THE CLEAN CHANNEL CIRCUIT TOO NOT THE GAIN CIRCUIT.
THE PC BOARDS ARE THICKER THAN PEAVEY TOO. I DONT HAVE A MICROMETER BUT ID SAY TWICE AS THICK. NOT AS THICK AS THE ENGLS PC BOARD OR EVEN THE DUAL RECTIFIER I OWNED. THOSE ARE SOLID LIKE CLOSE TO 3/8' INCH THICK. SOMEONE ONCE SAID THAT THE BUGERAS HAD MISSING SOLDER AND COLD SOLDER JOINTS. I DONT SEE ANYTHING LIKE THAT ON HERE. SEEMS TO BE LIKE ANY CIRCUIT BOARD YOU SEE THESE DAYS. MACHINE MADE AND AS GOOD A JOB AS ANY. I KNOW MY ENGLS HAVE SOME SOLDER JOINTS THAT ARE HAND DONE THAT LOOKS LIKE MY SLOPPY WORK. THAT DOESNT MAKE IT BETTER OR WORSE JUST DIFFERENT. THE COMPONENTS LIKE THE RESISTERS AND CAPACITORS , RIBBON CABLES AND SUCH LOOK TO BE AS DECENT AS ANY. I'M NOT ELECTRICIAN BUT THEY USED LARGE RESISTORS INSTEAD OF THE DINKY ONES YOU NORMALY SEE ON COMPUTER PC BOARDS. SHRUGGS. THE ENTIRE THING SEEMS MADE BETTER THAN A PEAVEY CEPT THE POTENTIOMETERS AND THE TRANSFORMERS ARE PROBABLY MADE IN CHINA. THE CASE, THE STEAL VENTS, SCREWS AND CIRCUIT BOARDS ARE BETTER.

PICS OR IT DIDNT HAPPEN. MY APOLOGIES FOR THE POOR QUALITY. ALL I HAVE IS MY SONY WALKMAN CAMERA PHONE.

Image
PRETTY STANDARD AMP PACKAGING

Image
HERE IT IS TURNED ON

Image
YOU'LL NOTICE THE TOP VENT. IT IS NOT PLASTIC LIKE MOST AMPS. IT IS STEEL OR SOME FORM OF METAL. ALSO THE WOODEN BOX SEEMS TO BE VERY LIGHT. POSSIBLY POPLAR. SIMILAR TO LINE6 BOX QUALITY. DEFINATELY NOT MESA QUALITY. THE AIR VENT FENCE IS NOT FLIMSY LIKE PEAVY. ITS SOLID STEEL OR METAL.NOT WIRE. IT WAS LIKE THEY TOOK A PIECE OF STEEL AND DRILLED HOLES INTO IT.

Image

Image
FIRST THING I NOTICED IS EVERY SCREW HOLDING THE AMP TOGETHER IS A MACHINE SCREW AND NOT WOOD SCREWS LIKE PEAVEY . EVEN MY ENGLS THE VENTS ARE WOOD SCREWED ON. THE BUGERA IS ALL MACHINE SCREWS INTO NUTS. THE CHASIS COMES OUT WITH MACHINE SCEWS LIKE EVERYONES BUT THE VENT PLATES AND THE SCREENS ARE FASTENED WITH MACHINE SCREWS.

Image
THE AMP HAS A NICE RF SHIELD ON THE BOTTOM OF THE CASE TO SHIELD THE COMPONENTS ON THE CHASIS. IVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THAT BEFORE ON AN AMP.

Image
ALL THE PREAMP TUBES CAME WITH COVERS. I SUSPECT THEY ARE RUBY TUBES. THEY HAVE A BIG C PRINTED ON THEM FOR CHINESE. YOU'LL NOTICE THE 6L6/EL34 SWITCH. 333XL COMES WITH MY FAVORITE POWER TUBES. EL34. I BELIEVE THESE ARE SOVTEKS RELABELED AS BUGERA BRAND. I SUSPECT THEY JUST BULK ORDER THEM WITHOUT TESTING AND IS THE CULPRIT IN THE FUSE BLOWING DILEMMA WE HAVE BEEN READING ABOUT. MAYBE THERE IS A WORSE ISSUE WITH THESE AMPS THAT IF HAPPENS TO ME HAPPENS BEFORE MY 45 DAY RETURN POLICY.

ALSO YOULL NOTICE THE NICE GASKET ON THE TRANSFORMER WIRES GOING INTO THE CHASIS. THAT IS EXTRA NICE. EVERY AMP I HAVE EVER OWNED HAS JUST HAD A PIECE OF ELECTRICAL TAPE WRAPPED AROUND THE COLORED PLASTIC COVERING OF THE WIRE.
ALSO A BIAS PROBE ON THE CHASIS AND BIAS NOB. JUST LIKE PEAVEY. IM SURE THEY BORROWED IT DIRECTLY FROM THEM AND PROBABLY USE THE SAME MANUFACTURE FOR THAT CIRCUIT BOARD.

Image
EL34S. IF YOU GET ONE OF THESE AMPS I WOULD RECOMMEND NOT TO PUT JJS IN IT. THEY RUN HOT AND BLEW UP A BUNCH OF PEAVEY XXX AND JSX AMPS WHEN THEY WERE COMING STOCK WITH THEIR AMPS. SO PEAVEY STOPPED USING THEM.

Image
YOU CANT TELL IN THE PICTURE BUT THE TRANSFORMER HAVE THIS CHROME VENT COVER BOLTED TO THEM. NOT SURE WHAT THAT IS ALL ABOUT. IM SURE THEY ARE CHEAP CHINESE TRANSFORMERS THOUGH. THEY SAY BUGERA ON THEM.
Image

Image
OK HERE IS THE MAIN REASON EVERYONE WHO EVER TOUCHES ONE OF THESE SAY THEY ARE CHEAPLY MADE. NO ARGUMENT THIS IS CHEAP RIGHT HERE. THE POTENTIOMETERS ARE NOT THE TYPE YOU ARE USED TO SEEING IN YOUR GUITAR THEY ARE THESE LITTLE SURFACE MOUNTED ONES WITH EXTENDERS ON THEM TO REACH THROUGH THE CHASIS WITH THE NOBS CONNECTED TO THE EXTENDERS. THEY DONT TOUCH THE HOLES SO THEY WIGGLE A BIT DUE TO THEIR LENGTH FROM THE PC BOARD TO THE OUTSIDE. IM SURE PEOPLE WILL HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THESE IN THE FUTURE DUE TO USING THEM WITH WEAR AND TEAR ON THE SOLDER CONNECTION.

Image
AGAIN IM NOT ELECTRICIAN OR AMP TECH BUT THESE WHITE CIRCLE THINGS ARE THE PREAMP TUBE SOCKETS. THEY ARE THE NICEST LOOKING ONES I HAVE EVER SEEN. THEY LOOK NICER THAN THE ONES IN MY ENGLS. OBVIOUSLY THAT DOESNT MEAN THEY ARE NICER. THEY COULD BE FISHER PRICE NICE. MAYBE SOMEONE LIKE LEWN CAN SET US STRAIGHT ON THAT.

Image
HERE YOU WILL NOTICE 4 FUSES ON THE CIRCUIT BOARD FOR THE AMP ITSELF. THIS IS THE REASON I THINK IT IS THE POWERTUBES BLOWING THE AMPS. I THINK THESE WOULD BLOW IF IT WERE AN AMP PROBLEM. THE FUSE TO THE POWER SECTION IS THE THING BLOWING FOR EVERYONE. NOT THE PREAMP SECTION FUSES. AGAIN HOPEFULLY MARK LEWN OR SOMEONE ELECTRONIC SAVY CAN EXPLAIN.

HERES THE ONLY CHIP I COULD FIND.

HERE ARE MY CLIPS FROM WHEN I HAD THE COMBO
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=479598

AGAIN IM NOT SAYING IT IS AN AMAZING AMP. ITS GREAT FOR THE MONEY. WE SHALL SEE IF IT BREAKS DOWN OR NOT. I LIVE CLOSE ENOUGH TO A RADIO SHACK TO GET SOME FUSES IF NEEDED AND ALREADY OWN SOME OTHER TUBES TO REPLACE TO TEST MY BAD TUBE THEORY IF THIS ONE DIES. I KNOW SOME PEOPLE WOULD LOVE TO SEE IT DIE BUT ONLY TIME WILL TELL. I ONLY COMPARED IT TO PEAVE BECAUSE THATS WHAT EVERYONE SEEMS TO DO. I ALSO COMPARED IT TO ENGL CAUSE THAT IS DECENT QUALITY THAT I AM FAMILIAR WITH . NOT THAT I THINK ANYTHING IS THE BEST OR WORST. ID SAY THE BUGERA IN SOME WAYS IS MADE BETTER THAN PEAVEY BUT WORSE FOR THE NOBS AND TRANSFORMERS. IT IS ALL AROUND LESS QUALITY THAN ENGL BUT A 4TH THE COST TOO. I SAY THEY ARE BETTER THAN PEOPLE GIVE THEM CREDIT FOR DUE TO THE NAME. AGAIN WE SHALL SEE. MAYBE I WILL CHANGE MY MIND.

What Got You Into Playing Guitar and Playing Deans?
by Carlstrmm on Wed May 14, 2008 11:33 pm
We all have our stories.

I was a drummer from about 3 years, i was pretty good, but i didnt like it that much. That reason was probobly because i wasnt really into music. Then, i quit drums. In that time, started to get into metal. Unfortunately, the bands that i got into were kind of crappy bands when i look at it now (System of a Down, Celldweller, Drowning Pool.) Thats when i decided to pick up guitar. From that, i fell in love with guitar. For about 2 months, i played a tiny Larivee acoustic that was in my basement. Then my birthday came. I wanted a simple electric guitar, and my parents got me a pretty cheep deal. 90 bucks was an electric guitar (arianna or something) came with picks, 10 watt amp, strap, case, the whole s'hpeel. Then i fell in love with that, (even though it sounded like crap.) Then, after playing guitar hero or something, the only guitar company I wanted to get was Gibson. I wanted an Explorer. Almost planning to get one one month after, we decided to meet our good family friend Brad, (Bradworld here on the forums), and he showed me the light. I saw his ZDP and was completely blown away. Eventually, he told me someone on here was selling it for lower then usual, (500), so he hooked me up, and there i had my first Dean, a ZDP. Ever since, I've loved guitar more then anything in this world.

Anyone else got stories?

Strings
by Berserker829 on Thu May 15, 2008 2:50 am
So I've been thinking of swapping over from 11-50's to 10-52's because I remember how beautifully I flew over the 9 guages on my Dean when it was stock. Now I've got one problem, I'm not only a string breaker but I'm worried about the 10's being able to deal with my tunings or not. I can do down to C# with 50's and be ok - top string is crazy wobbly but it works. Would the treble strings for a 10 set be able to handle these tunings?

Would you consider this a good deal? New Guitar Day!
by _koppen on Thu May 15, 2008 1:51 pm
So, Razorback's are much more worth here in sweden, so i sold my previous Razorback V standard red metallic.
And since they have droped in price, plus the low value of the Dollar compared to the Swedish crown, i sold my razorback here in Sweden.
And for the money i got for that one, i could buy a new black Razorback V standard, pay for the shipping and custom fees, plus i could afford a Floyd Rose original (had to call through half of Europe to get a Cosmo black one) and i will also be able to buy a Corey Beaulieu Ascention pickup to put in the neck along with the Dimebucker!
And all that for the money i got for my 1 year old Razor V Very Happy

Good deal? Cool

Blackstar Dual-HT
by Body_Snatcher on Thu May 15, 2008 2:59 pm
Bought one yesterday. It KILLS.

Possibly the most amazing pedal I've had, and I've been through a few. MXRs, Kranks, Boss etc, but this one frippin kills.

Got two channels, one lead and one crunch/rhythm channel, with a 3-band EQ and an ISF.

It also has two ECC83/12AX7 tubes, which provide some awesome tonage as well.

The ISF is the real deal though. It switches between a US/MESA sound a UK/Marshall sound, or a bit of both as well. Awesomeness.

The gain channel allows you to go from slightly overdrive clean tones to bone-crushing crunch.

At £125, it's quite the pedal, and does very well to replicate the sound of an actual Blackstar amp as well.
anyone here ever play a Dean acoustic bass?
by bassmantim71 on Thu May 15, 2008 4:58 pm
I honestly have zero experience with acoustic basses, but a friend of my has asked about purchasing one. I told him that I love most of the Dean products, and gave him my 2006 & 2007 Dean catalogs to look at.

Are the Dean accoustic basses good? I've never tried one. Good onboard electronics? Any info is greatly appreciated Cool

need some advice on stoptail Dean MLs
by Goc on Thu May 15, 2008 7:46 pm
So i'm not really happy with my DFH, to be more precise - i hate the LFR. So i'm really thinking about selling it and getting a stoptail ML. As far as the rest of the DFH goes, i'm satisfied - the neck, the playability, the sound.

So far the 30th anniversary ML looks the best solution, but i'd really like to hear your opinions and/or suggestions for some other stoptail MLs/deans that i may also like to check em out. Any input is appreciated.

Mattias "IA" Eklundh is an extremely talented guy, and the band is great, so check em out. However, I was just wondering if anyone knows what the "IA" is in his name, I mean of course I assume its his middle name or something like that, but it would be weird of him to put it on his signature guitar, and in quotes with his name always. So I'm just wondering if anyone knows if it means something else?

Some song questions here. Master of Puppets, is the whole song down picked at every part? Is the main riff to Revolution Is My Name down picked as well? Do Mark Morton and Chuck Shuldiner (yes two different bands) tend to alternate pick alot? I'll add more as I think of 'em.

Paint me green & call me SLIME. Tons of pRoN
by bassmantim71 on Fri May 16, 2008 5:07 am
Hey,

I won't do a full review here, Slay has taken care of that in the "new Deans" section. Just gonna give my opinion on the 2006 limited run Dean DimeSlime axe. I'll start by saying that tazz888 is a super guy, great packaging, lightning fast shipping, and he even threw in an OFR type whammy bar for me. Here goes:

This guitar is really cool, one of the best looking Deans IMO. I had to have this one, lucky 7 is "MY" lucky number. What I love about this guitar:

- awesome finish, amazing flame maple tops, body & HS
- you get the V neck without having to $hell out for a USA (I'll get one, one day)
- super rare & collectable
- nice & light weight on the shoulder
- fretboard has an amazing "feel" to it, very nice shape
- best color guitar for an Irishman like me Surprised

What could have been done better:

- sub-par electronics, toggle switch is crapping out on me
- it's comfy, but a big "mahogony" guitar should be alot heavier than this
- I prefer natural dot inlays like abalone, I'm not crazy for plastic or pearloid
- has a steel sustain block, brass is better IMO

Honestly, this is a great guitar. You stand up, it's light, and you get to enjoy the best neck shape ever built (took me a day or two to get used to it). Right now, I'm dialing the tone back to about 6 or 7 when I play, which I've never done. The tone pot on my Korean Deans was always on 10, but this guitar sounds "bright" to me. Hopefully it's just the strings, I haven't gotten around to putting my fav DR 9-50 hi-volts on it yet. If that doesn't do the trick, I might put my other Dimebucker or my BL500XL in it. Hopefully it's not the wood that is making this axe sound so bright..., if so, I'll be buying my old TLTML back Surprised

Over all, I really love this axe..., two thumbs up. Mandatory pRon:

Coming from me, the Supreme Gear Whore, that's a bold statement, but after months of tweaking and tinkering I honestly can't think of any other guitar that I want that I can't emulate with those I already have. Sure I'd like a nice Les Paul Custom but who wouldn't? Right now I've got these 4 guitars and an acoustic. The Sherwood Green Strat is a Squier Standard series body, Fender pickguard loaded with older SD Hot Rails and a 2006 Fender neck with med/jumbo frets. SCREAMS. The blue Strat is a Stagg with an alder body and 3 real nice singles and a neck to die for. Nice tinted maple with med/jumbo frets. Got it with the plastic still on the pups and pickguard for $95 shipped. Cool The black one is a Squier 51 body with a mid 80s MIJ Squier Strat neck with matching black headstock. I totally blacked this thing out. Never had a guitar that was easier to play or that felt better in my hands. Finally there's the Parker P-38 that I got a couple of weeks ago at a local pawnshop. I never gave Parker the time of day because of the bizarro looks but this one was so cheap I had to at least pick it up. HOLY HELL MAN. I get it now. Super light ash body and the Fishman Piezo transducers are out of this world, the sounds that come out of this guitar are sounds I've never heard from an electric or electric/acoustic before. 12" radius neck and big frets make it a dream to play. I'm content!

*Speaking of blown amps...* it's not the amp
by atarilovesyou on Fri May 16, 2008 5:33 pm
...I'm right in the middle of jammin' away, and I decide to remove my chorus from the chain. I put my JSX amp on standby, wait, remove the pedal, power back up and...

...the amp is barely audible. I 'can' hear it, but it's very quite on all channels and I can hear a kind of distortion coming from the speakers behind it.

I immediately power it down again, I must have removed the wrong cable. Nope. Plugged two different guitars into the amp direct, SAME problem. Wow.

I just had my power tubes replaced about 3 weeks ago, but the tech said the preamp tubes seemed ok.

I'm thinking the preamp tubes are now toast as well...does this sound right?

I already paid the dude labour costs for the power amp swap, and my JSX seems pretty 'tube change' friendy, with a bias control knob and some easy terminals to hook up the multimeter.

I've read that the preamp tubes don't require biasing. Is this true? Would it be just a simple swap to a new set of tubes?

If it IS the preamp tubes, there's some shielding on them (there's three, I believe) and I can't tell which one is burnt out. Must I replace them all, just like the power tubes had to?

...I just can't believe how quickly they went, if that's indeed what's wrong. One second, fine..the next, toast. The sound the amp is making now compared to when the power tubes went is quite different, now it's just SUPER quiet.

Any help?...thanks in advance Cool
Changed my mind on the Alexi
by Scrapnasty on Fri May 16, 2008 7:54 pm
Sure it's a badass guitar and I still want it but I think I'm falling back in love with my dime o flame.

I'm thinking about changing the pickups though. The dimebucker just isn't doing it for me.

Probably going to throw a JB in the bridge and see what happens. Maybe I'll try and wire the Bareknuckle up again.

I have to beef up my Select V also. Once I get some cash I'm ganna order 500K pots and get some new pickups for it also. Not sure what though. Probably a JB in the bridge and a PAF in the neck.

Just though everyone should know. Laughing

I have read were Michael Schenker would use a Wah Wah pedal to get that really sick sound out of his guitar by pressing on it till he got that exact sound and left it there, so I got a VOX wah wah and messed with it and all of the sudden THERE IT WAS!! I dont impress myself much but once I had the Vox set I cranked the Peavey 50/212 to WOT and hit the Hoochee Mama Overdrive and had the neighbors windows rattling

$3,999.00 is it worth it? I mean, I love the looks, I love the binding, I love the inlays, and I especially love the guitar as a whole. But knowing me over time I'd end up floyding it, putting in new pups, just that whole little bit. And that most likely kills the reason anyone would pay $4000 for it

So yeah, any thoughts or more info on this beast?

Here's a shot of him with it when I could get him away from the Marshall, again, thanks Justin!

We now have another Dean little Brother for the forum family Cool

I feel good
by Warlock_340 on Sat May 17, 2008 9:12 pm
A friend of my brothers whose also a friend of mine a bit was in my brothers room and I was next door just kinda jamming out on my new ESP V-500, and this other guys really good, one of my idols actually, and I'm not all that great. I just did some stuff that I can do easily, old and new, lots of Megadeth, Scorpions, Metallica, Pantera and stuff, I had some fun doing it for about 15 minutes. I walk out and chill in the living room, and as he's leaving he tells me "I'll see ya later, hey Jake your starting to get really good at guitar, You played Angry Again awesomely and that song isn't an easy one to play." I was shocked and said thank you. And right now I'm loads more confident with my playing. I know I'm no Zakk Wylde yet, but still, that made me feel really good.

I realize many of you don't care, but I just felt like sharing that. Cool
Warrel Dane, praises to the War Machine

For those of you who don't know who Warrel Dane is, he is the singer for a band called Nevermore. He released an album on May 13. I got the album about three days ago, it's AMAZING! The songs are amazing very good musicianship but not necessarily wankery. But yeah, GET IT NOW! Fret buzz with an OFR
by Bojamijams on Sat May 17, 2008 11:09 pm
Okay I never had a guitar with an OFR/locking nut before.

When I strum the low E really hard or even when I fret it, I get a buzz that seems to be coming from the nut. However I tightened that sucker down as much as I could and I can't eliminate it.

But.. seeing as how I get buzz even when I fret it, I think maybe its not the nut. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Solid State Amps
by GuitarGoat on Sun May 18, 2008 12:45 am
Hey guys,

I just went to Guitar Center today and was jamming on a few different guitars and amps and all that. What I realized was this: I just don't seem to like tube amps. At all. I was playing the Mesa Boogies and Marshalls and Peaveys and all that, but quite honestly I liked Crates and Randalls better! Is anyone else like this? Because I almost feel like I'm doing something wrong here to rather play these $300 amps as opposed to the $1500 popular heads. It just seems like I can get a better sound out of the solid-staters. Anyone?
Speaking of solid state...anyone tried this?

Home COmputer Recording Questions?
by Graunke on Sun May 18, 2008 12:17 pm
I want to start recording at home on my computer, but the prob is my desktop is ancient. So, I"m looking at new systems, and I don't know what to get. Is this one here going to be good enough to use?

http://www.emachines.com/products/products.html?prod=T5254

and if it is, I can't decipher what kind of I/O I should be using, there are far to many to choose from. USB? UPgrade to Firewire? GO with the free "reaper"? Is Pro Tools LE as difficult as Pro TOols people go to college for?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Guitar Stool/Drum Throne
by Anonymous on Sun May 18, 2008 5:14 pm
I sit a lot when I practice, (well, lean kinda) and have never had a comfortable, ergonomic butt-holding device to use. Yesterday, the enabler and I were looking around at drum thrones and found a couple that come with back supports. A good friend that owns the store gave me a good tip! He recommended "Roc-N-Soc." I checked them out, and they look like a GOOD candidate. Comfortable, adjustable, good-size available back, and nitro shock absorber. Available in black, red or blue, adjusts from 18" - 24".

I'll be grabbing one of these as soon as I can, I just figured I would pass this on, perhaps gain some feedback from others who have tried them or currently own them...

question about an ML
by helltone on Sun May 18, 2008 6:11 pm
I believe this is a 98 ml ultra(info from dean, not sure) I have not seen many ml's with this strap pin location from the factory. It's a little uncomfortable with it strapped on in this location and the guitar itself is very heavy.
If I relocate it were it should be would it interfere or cause a problem with the set neck joint? I apolagize if this seems like a pointless question, but I respect everyones knowledge and opinions on this forum otherwise I would not ask..thanks

Neck pup for Dean CFH
by Body_Snatcher on Sun May 18, 2008 8:18 pm
I was wondering, eventually when I get some spare money, which neck pickup to get for the Dean CFH.

I'm not a big fan of Dimarzios, so I was wondering.

Right now I'm considering a Miracleman or a Mississipi Queen.

The Mississipi Queen mainly because I like a warmy P-90 sound for my neck pickup, but it may not be the best for metal.

Virgil Fox - Master of Baroque Heavy Organ
by Northwinds on Mon May 19, 2008 4:13 am
Not the typical genre of music listening for a lot of guitar players but back when I was really heavy into shred 1980-86, I really got into heavy organ music and still enjoy. The huge cathedral organs have a indescribable haunting but immensely powerful sound. Music is mainly preludes, tocattas and fugues in the Minor keys of A & D

Virgil Fox is one of the most respected organists ever and if you get a chance, check out some of his lps. Baroque organ music is some of the heaviest there is and is where shred was born

ENFORCER is dead
by spacebeer on Mon May 19, 2008 10:57 am
So last week I quit my band after 7 years. We just weren;t going nowhere anymore. I noticed people started skipping rehearsal for shitty reasons more often and our other guitarist quit 6 weeks ago. After he quit we had a good talk and it seemed we were there to stay, everybody said they were still into it and we weer gonna record a high quality demo. However after 6 weeks we only had 1,5 rehearsals and that was it for me.

Another reason that made te desicion easier was the fact I started rehearsing with my new project/band T.C.F. (www.myspace.com/thrashcorefanatics) and it was so much fun it opened my eyes and actually made the desicion easier. The problem is I play bass in this new band (it was actually a 2-man project but we now attracted a guitar player so I can concentrate on bass + vox). So I have all my guitar gear collecting dust hahahah. Oh well it might come in handy, I'll keep writing riffs for T.C.F. I have to say I really enjoy playing bass and I bought a brand new 2007 LE MusicMan Stingray in blue dawn finish, ALways loved the sound of them.

Razorback sounds better than my 79ML
by Serbusfish on Mon May 19, 2008 2:32 pm
Im confused, I have the same pickup in both guitars (dimebucker) and they are both tuned to C (one is Drop C and the other is C standard) but the Razorback sounds better than the 79. The 79 doesnt have as much sustain and is a little muddier. The tone im getting from the Razorback is what id consider perfect. Could the gauge of string contribute to this? I have 10 - 52's on my razorback and 12 - 56's on my 79. I know each guitar will sound a little different due to the wood and shape but i didnt think they would sound this different.

DM sig Livewires question
by RenegadeDave on Mon May 19, 2008 6:05 pm
I've got them in one of my guitars that I've had since december. The metal guards are tarnishing much faster than passive pickup covers do. One of them has tarnished to the point where it's discolored in one area.

Anyone else with a VMNT have this issue?
Hopefully someone can solve my problem.
by Ancients3xritual on Mon May 19, 2008 7:33 pm
Well i have a Randall v2 head currently and as much as i mess with the tone (eq,compressor, etc) i cant seem to find a good tone, always seems to muddy and i can barely get harmonics ( i know im doing them right because they sound amazing on my line 6 flextone 2) but on the randall it seems as if they almost have no sustain. Im not sure if im positive on wanting to switch to tube amps but rather anything that gives me the sound i want. The sound i want to achieve is a sound that can come close to almost a Decapitated or Opeth tone, but can do everything else. Basically im looking for a very versatile amp. Any suggestions are welcome and sound clips would be appreciated as well, thanks guys!

Kill-Switching a Strat.
by xero_uk on Tue May 20, 2008 12:07 pm
So I'm looking at fitting a killswitch on my Strat. I want to fit it to the top of scratch plate by the neck.

This would require a rout similar to this:

except obiously leading from the front rout that is already there.

Would this effect the tone of the wood at all? I'm looking at replacing the pickups soon (as per my other post), and thought if I'm going to do this, I might as well do it while the scratch plate is off the guitar.

Amp gurus suggest me a combo!
by MasterplayerC on Wed May 21, 2008 6:42 am
My roomate up at college (a drummer) is throwing a band together to play house parties/backyards and the local bars, and wants me to play guitar.

A half stack definitely isn't necessary, and I don't need anything pricey. Tonewise I'd love something that could get a good metal tone but the setlist is far from metal, so I don't really need ENGL quality tone.

1. Weezer-“Buddy Holly”
2. Incubus- “Warning”
3. Brand New – “Last Chance to Lose Your Keys”
4. Thrice – “The Artist in the Ambulance”
5. Jimmy Eat World-“Sweetness”
6. Foo Fighters- “My Hero”
7. Green Day-“When I Come Around”
8. Alanis Morsiette-“You Oughta Know”
9. Nirvana- “On a Plain”
10. The Raconteurs-“Steady As She Goes”
11. Stone Sour - Through Glass
12. Porcupine Tree - Shallow
13. Alter Bridge - Find the Real
14. Rise Against - Give It All
15. The Cars - Just What I Needed
16. All American Rejects - Dirty Little Secret
17. Blink 182 - Aliens Exist
18. Blink 182 - Happy Holidays You Bastard
19. Radiohead - Just

I was thinking about snagging either a used 5150 off Ebay or one of those Bugera combos from Samash. I also thought about snagging a cheapo Crate and just getting a distortion pedal, but I'm honestly a noob when it comes to amp, so I could use all the help I can get.

Your favourite guitar

If you had to pick just one guitar that you own right now, one that you absolutely adore and would never sell for the world, post it in this thread (only one! that means you to armitage! Cool )

Mine: 79MLF, it is the most beautiful guitar ive ever seen and the most comfortable guitar ive ever played. I can garentee right now that I will never sell it.

Bought me a Jackson
by Bjoddn on Wed May 21, 2008 5:15 pm
Well, 36 days after I paid for it, it finally arrived from the land of the free.
It is a used guitar, but there is not a scratch on it that I can see.

The color does not come through correctly, it is darker.

For some reason, Jackson thinks it's cool to have one volume knob, two tone and a toggle switch that is squeezed in there in a uncomfortable place IMHO.
So I was thinking about making some changes. I would like to have some input, and suggestions for the WTF. Smile

by Body_Snatcher on Wed May 21, 2008 6:36 pm
Was wondering if any of yous have used any Mics for recording with Garageband/Cubase?

The one I've got at the moment doesn't seem to have enough impendence, so I was curious which one to use.

And if you don't got clips, tell me if it's a good pickup, is it heavy, loud, good, better than a BL and Dimbucker( Razz )...how is it??
