Neck shaving
by Berserker829 on Sun Jun 01, 2008 4:38 am
Yeah funny title, but a subject I've been thinking about. How risky is having a luthier shave a '79F C shape to that V of the DFH? How much would it cost? What are the risks?
Rediscovering love for old pedals
by Berserker829 on Sun Jun 01, 2008 5:08 am
Last night after a month or so of losing faith in my CFH wah because for some reason I couldn't get as great of a wah sound as I wanted - better than digital wahs but not what I was looking for- I managed to tweak it so I get this amazing sound sound out of it. With the ZW distortion on or even just regular distortion it's super saturated and I can make it sound exactly like Electric Funeral from Sabbath. I've had the wah since December. Combination of tweaking and using an adaptor instead of batteries turned all my pedals into amazing devices. So, with that said, who's got some pedal story?

Which Boost?
by GuitarGoat on Sun Jun 01, 2008 9:23 pm
Hey guys,

I'm buying a Randall RG100ES within the month and from what I hear, it's going to need a boost up front for what I want. I'm debating whether I should put an MXR 6-Band up front to boost it or do the Metal Zone trick where the gain is turned down and the level up. Anyone used them and if I could get some opinions it'd be great. Thanks.
Band stuff.
by Body_Snatcher on Sun Jun 01, 2008 9:43 pm
Strange rant, but how hard is it to keep a band together, jesus.

Everything just seems to be so topsy turvy.

We've gone from 4 man band to 2 man to 1 band to 2 man band to something or the other and back to something other.

Just getting a bit mind-boggling.

Rant over.
Boss SD-1
by Serbusfish on Sun Jun 01, 2008 11:01 pm
Is the Boss SD-1 a good overdrive pedal? Im thinking about replacing my Metal Zone for a decent overdrive, been considering the Maxon OD808 and the MXR ZW44. Someone told me the SD-1 was basically the same as the ZW44 but much cheaper, is this true and is this pedal any good? I'll mainly be using it to boost my amp, the same way killswitch engage boost their amps, is this pedal decent when used this way?

X2N Appreciation Staion (metric ton of pron)
by Scrapnasty on Sun Jun 01, 2008 11:43 pm
So I traded my Dimebucker for an X2N via forum meber The Swank. Cool dude to do business with, always in contact.

Anyway I had to take of the floyd rose to instal a new OFR arm and remove the old screw-in type so I figured, what the hell. Broke out the iron and undid the BareKnuckle keeping its space warm.

Both units installed after a lot of cussing at the trem arm.

THIS PICKUP ROCKS! Seriously, through the Krank it sounds friggin MONSTER. I'm officialy converted to the X2N for all my heavy metal needs.

I will have a video up probably tomarrow as the camera I use is currently indisposed at the moment.

Just wanted everyone to know, X2N's are the shit man. I highly recomend them for balls to the wall playing. Cool

What the Floyd?!
by Berserker829 on Mon Jun 02, 2008 12:58 am
My last two floyds have been able to keep tune in all but the low E saddle. Whenever I use my floyd or bend hard my low E loses tune and typically goes sharp or flat, right now I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure it's sharp. The strings are completely stretched out and there's no burrs or any groves or anything I could see on either floyd and this one is an OFR and just turned a week old.

Protecting the back of your guitar
by ZeroSignal on Mon Jun 02, 2008 2:59 am
I was wondering if anyone had any tricks up their sleeve when it came to protecting the finish on the back of their guitar from belt buckles and the like...

I couldn't find anything on the forum and searches on Google came up with a couple of products (http://www.scratchpadusa.com/index.html - concerns me that it might slowly eat the paint) but I think I'd rather hear what you guys do (if anything).

geetar center trip (too bad i'm uber poor.)
by Curt on Mon Jun 02, 2008 7:13 am
ok I went to geetar center earlier today and played an arseload of deans. some import dimes ml and razorback the usa leslie west some vendettas and 2 different caddys as well as a used dean usa tcml and then the favorite part was playing the lost 100 trans brazillia ml. now I almost feel ashamed to buy an import dean now

and here I was thinking that everybody was over reacting when they say once you play a usa dean you will not go back to imports everything about the lost 100 was amazing to me the best guitar i've played in my life time (that not being very long)

all played through a krank rev1 and then through a randall g3 and to me I liked the randall better don't ask me why but here is my concusion is that I buy a couple imports and then off to usa's and as a pc tech and network administrator (yeah my schools network administrator said to take this course called a+ and straight outta high shool I am certified to be a pc tech then 2 years of college and I can be a network admin.) I will make some pretty good money (lotta people in my town have computer problems.) so it will be usa from there.

if this gets any views sorry for the long read though most of you will probably not read the whole thing.

How do I know if it's because of the truss rod or the bridge?

The buzzing is the worst around the 5th -7th fret on the treble strings, particularly the E string.
No problems around the bass strings btw.

Pedal order?
by SuicideMessiah82 on Mon Jun 02, 2008 9:25 pm
So my friend recently started a band and he doesn't know which order he should set up his pedals in. He doesn't have them yet but he wants to get everything planned out in advance.

He's lookin' to get a Boss DS1 Distortion and a Boss NS2 Noise Suppressor. Which should go first in his line?

And his amp has nice gain but he's looking for a little extra (that's why he wants the DS1). Are there any pedals that would be better for what he's looking for in this area?

Thanks in advance Smile

EDIT: Also, in my pedal line which should the order be?

I have a Dunlop 535Q Wah, Banshee Rocktron Talkbox and a Danelectro Pepperoni Phaser.

Washburn Stealth vs. Dean Stealth

Almost everyone on here talks nothing but good about Washburn.
Check out what the few guys on the Washburn Forums had to say about the Dean Stealth.

http://www.washburn.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11845

Mad

Now I never got to play a Stealth... be it Washburn or Dean... So I would like to hear what some of you guys that have played both think?

This post is not to knock Washburn, but to see if some of you guys were able to compare them both??? Including the ML style!

Obviously Dime thought Dean was better...right?
noob tube question
by Scrapnasty on Mon Jun 02, 2008 10:41 pm
Ok so I'm jamming on the Rev Jr and when I stop playing I hear an interesting noise. It's kind of like a high pitched buzz like a ground is loose or something.

Problem is it's happening to every guitar I try and I know they're not all ungrounded.

Anyway I looked at the tubes in the head and they're all glowing. However I noticed that one power tube has a blue little halo at the bottom and one doesnt. To my recolection I think they both had blue in them when I looked before.

Tube dying? Krank living up to thier name? Something else?

PS Don't tell Martin. Laughing

My issue with floyds.
by Carlstrmm on Mon Jun 02, 2008 11:36 pm
Allright, heres my story.

Last year I got a white MLF79 from Steve at BRG (great guy) for my birthday and channukah combined. When i got it i barely knew how to handle the floyd. After hours and hours put into it, and getting much advice from people, i started to learn how to keep it in tune. As hard as i tried, i still couldnt get it in tune. Thats when i sent it to this guy in my area who does repairs/setups and is really good at this stuff, really recognized guy. Then i go home and play. Still out of tune. I eventually find out that my floyd was a dud, so i sent it back to Steve and he gave me a new one. So then with my new ML, i gave it back to the setup guy a week ago. Now i have my guitar back, and the first thing i did after taking the guitar out was diving down on the floyd. It made the e flatten almost a half step. It STILL WOULDNT STAY IN TUNE.

After countless tries, i have spent about 160 dollars trying to set my floyd up and ect... and it still hasn't stayed in tune. My parents are getting really mad at me about this. Steve sent me a new one when i had my first one, and he even made SURE that this floyd is not a dud too. I'm obviously doing something wrong. How can this get worsee!!!? Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Should i just not give a damn and play out of tune?
Should i block the floyd out?
Should i sell it?
Will it sell for anything?

I really dont know,
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hey guys, before I go on to the pron, I would just like to tell you a story about how this guitar is finally mine.

I fell in love with this guitar around 2 years ago when I saw it in a Guitar World Magazine and I had NO Money then but I really wanted this amazing looking guitar with its deadly looks. So I decided to save up, leave a bit of my alowence, probably around 1 or 2 dollars a day, and now 2 years later I have my guitar. Even then my dad still chipped in to buy it for me. So a special thank you is needed for my dad.

Of course all this would NOT have happened if it wasn't for the best dealer on this forum! Steve @ BRG. He has had to stand up with several months of me naggin about "Oh Steve when will you have it?" or "Oh Steve where is it now?". He is a great dealer and gave me a great deal that I was comfortable with and Price + Shipping was great!

Thank you Steve for helping me get my first Dean Guitar, I love it. YOU'RE the best!

On to the PRON!

I got a myspace message from one other than Jeff Waters today, I couldn't f*cking believe it..Read on:

Hey Doug; I play in a Canadian metal band called Annihilator... a friend of mine sent me a link to some of your vids on myspace... van halenish soloing (cause i am a VH freak!).. just wanted to commend you on your serious talents... I initially thought "hey, this dude with the hat and acdc shirt on is killer; i bet he works construction by day or teaches guitar". Well I was part right. Very cool to find people who do so many things well!

Rockin!

Jeff
------------------------

I was very flattered to get this, as I used to crank Alice in Hell back in the day, and I think Jeff is amazing on guitar. Ha ha, I wrote him back saying if he needs a touring guitarist, to gimme a call.

So, what does this all mean? Post your sh*t on youtube!!! Cuz you never know who's checkin' it out.

More youtube lessons to come, just editing now.

Cheers.

Am I dreaming this or not? I thought I remembered seeing on the E Bay a while back, there was a few runs of Dean V's, that had Floyds, and some had EMG some had Dimebuckers in them. Was this deans? Do any of you own them?

They were yellow I think with black binding? I dunno. Can't get it outta my head.

Overall, I am very impressed. The necks are a nice, Slim and comfy C. The floyds are typical Licensed ones, which is to say are not bad if set right. The locking nut leaves something to be desired though. The PUPS are on par with stock Dean ones and are not that bad, but will be replaced ASAP. The graphics on both are nice. The fretboards are rosewood and the fretwork is pretty damn good. More so on the Confederate BUT the Rhoads was set up better. Perfect for me as no tweaking was required. The inlays are not perfect and there are some paint imperfections, but these guitars are as nice, Real nice Shocked

I am so impressed, I will be getting the camo one too.

Warmouth built knockoffs and legality for resale?
by Northwinds on Fri Jun 06, 2008 10:36 am
Just out of curiosity, what are the implications of selling these trademarked logo guitars publically? I remember that Alex guy from Russia selling his custom handbuilt "Dean" Razorback Rebel and the fervor that caused including his banning from the site. He even provided photo documentation of the build and never misrepresented it as the real deal, even when he had it listed on eBay

http://usrebelus.moifoto.ru/19069

Apparently in Europe, trademarks are hard to enforce but Stateside, what are the laws governing the public resale of clones w/ patented/trademarked logos? This is an interesting topic because many of the customs built are actually lightyears better in quality then the actual factory offerings but the resale of these customs could get the builder in legal hot water

I do remember a discussion about the Fender clone super strats sometime back but not the details, just that Fender did not take them lightly. From what I remember, the body and headstock style is hard to enforce but when a brand name logo is on the guitar, the companies have legal grounds to sue. I also see that Gibson now is offering a reward for information on who is building/supplying the poor quality Gibson knockoffs offered on eBay and elsewhere

I started thinking about this after seeing the Warmouth Jackson RR knockoff on the forum Trading Post

Recording Advice
by metalmessiah17 on Fri Jun 06, 2008 7:22 pm
Hey all. Me and a few other people are looking to finally sit down and do some recording for all the material we've been writing. Up until now, I've been using a TonePort with Gearbox to connect my guitar to my computer, and then I've been using Ableton Live to record. But the demo version is all that came with Gearbox, and I'm limited to only 4 tracks, which is somewhat a problem.

My question is what programs do you all use to record and edit? I'm looking for something fairly powerful, but not absolutely overwhelming. Also, preferebly something not ridiculously expensive. The main thing that I would like is at least 16 track support and ability to import in .avi or .mp3 files. Some people have pointed me towards Cubase, Cakewalk and FruityLoops, but I've heard mixed things about them all. Tried viewing their forums, but any posts there asking about a competing program are immediately bashed and become nothing but a flame war Rolling Eyes . So I figured I'd ask you all here for some advice.

Thanks in advance, cheers.

QUESTION ON EMG INSTALLATION

Hey guys, I have a question on EMGs. I've never installed a pair myself. If you buy the full set, do they come with the pots as well? I thought I saw somewhere that the Zakk Wylde set comes with the pots. I understand they need to be replaced as well. Also, is there a lot of soldering invoved. Again, I've heard that they are easy to install and have connectors in lieu of solder points. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Help with a setlist
by MasterplayerC on Sun Jun 08, 2008 12:19 am
Me and a couple friends are throwing a band together for the local house parties etc. We came up with about 20 songs that we thought would be cool to do, but my problem now is that I currently only have my FBD, so switching tunings is an issue. I can borrow my friends crap Epi LP, but its pretty terrible.

1. Weezer-“Buddy Holly” Eb
2. Incubus- “Warning” E
3. Brand New – “Last Chance to Lose Your Keys” drop D
4. Thrice – “The Artist in the Ambulance” drop C
5. Jimmy Eat World-“Sweetness” drop D
6. Foo Fighters- “My Hero” E
7. Green Day-“When I Come Around” Eb
8. Alanis Morsiette-“You Oughta Know” E
9. Nirvana- “On a Plain” drop D
10. The Raconteurs-“Steady As She Goes” E
11. Stone Sour - Through Glass Eb
12. Porcupine Tree - Shallow drop D
13. Alter Bridge - Find the Real drop C#
14. Rise Against - Give It All E
15. The Cars - Just What I Needed E
16. All American Rejects - Dirty Little Secret E
17. Blink 182 - Aliens Exist E
18. Blink 182 - Happy Holidays You Bastard E
19. Radiohead - Just E

EDIT: Forums don't like the way I formatted showing the tunings Rolling Eyes

Any comments/suggestions? The only thing I can think is to leave the FBD in standard so I can knock out all the standard/drop D stuff, and then group the odd tuning songs, and have a friend tune while we play something using the FBD.

Also, I've only played 2 songs at a time live, so I'm curious as to how tired I'm going to get based on that setlist. Pointers from veterans greatly appreciated!

Would I be gimping my metal tone with this amp?
by Tinbox1 on Sun Jun 08, 2008 11:50 am
My current amp (old fender princeton 65) really sucks hard. It makes random cracks and pops and the tone is just terrible. I just recently within the month bought my new Dean From Hell.
Im low on money to buy a perfect amp but I can get a brand new Carvin 112 Nomad from a friend for relatively cheap.

The amp is ment for old vintage style tones and blues/classic distortion. Its got a standard big amount of mid and its only knobs in the clean channel are Volume, Bass, Mid, and Trebel (I wouldnt use the distortion since thats evidently very bad for metal sounds). Many reviews I have read have either said that its not for metal tones at all, or that I could get by with the right pedals/mods. However I have no interest in modding any of my pedals or the amp yet.

I currently have a Boss DS-1 Distortion and a digitech death metal pedal, I was wondering if any of you would know if I had those hooked into this vintage amp would I be gimping my tone hardcore, or would I be fine.

The backing tracks at www.myspace.com/guitarfightclubaus are the ones we usually crank.

Last time I did lessons, BLOODROT suggested I talk about what scale sounds good over what rhythms. I tried to do that here.

Enjoy. Grab what you can and run with it.

Opinions on TC Caddy pups?
by electronpirate on Mon Jun 09, 2008 3:16 pm
I have a Time Capsule Caddy. It's by far the easiest, nicest PLAYING guitar that I've owned.

After borrowing a friends 70's LP with Mini-Burstbuckers, and after a few recording sessions with my Caddy, I realized it just doesn't SOUND that great. It's a little sterile, seems to chop out highs and muddy lows. My assumption is that the pups are not what I'm looking for. They sound better with higher gain, but I'd really like my cleans and mid-gain to be better. It's my main guitar, and it can't be a one trick pony...

Opinions on the PUPs in these things? Are they designed for pure Metal, and really nothing else? Has anyone changed them out for more flexibility?

Like there were two other guitarists out there with them ow. I know the lead one was a guitarist that was in Silvertide and satellite party. The other I have no clue about. They also got rid of brad stewart the bassist. Does anyone have any info on why they left?

WORK RANT!
by xero_uk on Mon Jun 09, 2008 6:53 pm
I am royally fuming right now.

Last week my manager came over to me to ask if I would be intrested to go to London to go to the International Music Festival to represent the company.

This week I come into work asking if I'm able to go and he has now told me no, 2 other people are going instead as they had "higher sales" than me. This has really annoyed me 'cos they take the percentage of all of the calls that we take, and last month I took pretty much nothing but account queries.

How the hell am I supposed to sell an account to someone who already has one.

Whats worse is that Chad Smith, Paul Gilbert, Billy Sheehan and most importantly for me - Joe Satriani are all schedualed to be playing!

/Rant.

7 - String Pickups

New Rack Day
by Steel City Psycho on Mon Jun 09, 2008 9:37 pm
After paying off some stuff, I wanted to build a little rack just for noise reduction and some effects.

Finally have everything and it's all put together.

Image

And a Midimate to control it all.

This is my first time dealing with stuff like this so any suggestions on set up/settings would be appreciated.

Right now I have the tuner being fed from the second out put on my CFH wah, so it isn't in any kind of signal chain.

The Guitar is going into the CFH and from that into Channel 1 on the Decimator with the Channel 1 ouput going into the BBE, BBE into amp input.

I'm using the BBE just for a little compression to even out my signal and slight sonic maximizer to compensate for any tone suck, and I'm running it in front of the amp.

Also as of right now I have the Serial loop send into the Xpression, Xpression into Decimator Channel 2 and Decimator Channel 2 into Serial loop return.

I'm still experimenting between the Serial and Parallel loop for the Xpression.

I'm still trying to figure out how to set up the Xpression/Midimate to simultaneously switch the channels on my Randall RM100 too. I know some guys on here have RM100s, so any tips on how to do this would be GREATLY appreciated.
Opinions on Cadillac Select
by nudnic on Mon Jun 09, 2008 10:05 pm
The Dean site doesn't provide much info on this model. Give me your opinion.

I assume that the top is a laminate. The inlays are pearloid rather than mother of pearl.

What size frets? What do the pick ups sound like?
ahh bugger!
by Vince on Tue Jun 10, 2008 12:12 am
well i attempted to install my Blackouts today into my ML.
so i ripped out all my controls, mounted the pickups and got ready to wire it all up..

turns out i have high heat solder wire, not low heat.

looks like I'm putting guitar playing on hold until i can get some low heat solder to finish up the job.
i was really looking forward to it too. what a bummer.

well, pron when it is finished i guess.
and i have a new camera now, so maybe some sound clips soon too.

How do I figure out year of Korean Dean guitar?
by jwood on Tue Jun 10, 2008 2:12 am
Dear Forum,
I have an older Dean Hollywood Z that was made in Korea. How do I determine what year it was made? I notice that there is a serial number on the neck plate. But I read that the non US ones are not as easy as just the first two digits = year.

Thanks

You guys tried this with your tube amps?
by Harry P. Ness on Tue Jun 10, 2008 3:28 pm
I have a 50 watt ValveKing combo. I'm not in a band, I just jam in my garage, so I've never been able to really crank the tubes and play it with the volume past three without shaking the shit out my house and pissing off neighbors.

Last night I cut the volume and the gain all the way down on my MXR 10 band EQ that I have in my loop which allowed me to crank my amp's volume to six. Best tone I've ever got out of that thing! The tubes were glowing blue and I couldn't believe how warm, full, and smooth it sounded, let alone the sustain, all at a tolerable volume level.

Is what I did with my EQ similar to what a hot plate does?

But anyway I managed to get the floyd back on but whether i did it right or not, I don't know. Does this look OK? It's not entirely flush with the body, but i can't remember whether it was or not..

New Amp day.
by Bullet on Tue Jun 10, 2008 7:51 pm
Well I just got out of the hospital today, after having an aniexty attack, and almost scaring myself into a heart attack. I get home, and well my free government money(aka Stimulus Check). So I got a new amp with the money. It sucks though, I have to wait a couple of days to play it though, because I'm suppose to be on bed rest for two days. Also I can't have any caffenne for about a week. Which sucks for me, because, pretty much all I drink are 'cokes'. So it looks like it will be Gatorade for a while.

Anyways it is a Line 6 Spider III HD150

Warming Up For NOFX!
by spz on Wed Jun 11, 2008 11:45 am
Oh my goodnes...

I have been a huge NOFX fan for a decade or two, in fact they are the reason I both enjoy and play punkrock. The last week there has been a contest on Norways biggest radio station in for bands to get the chance to warm up for NOFX when they come to Oslo on June 27th...

And we won!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked

Needless to say this is huge for us, also perfect timing to promote our upcoming album. I'll be damned if I let the opportunity to shove a copy up Fat Mike's ass pass me by! I have a dream to be on Fat Wreck so I have to give it my best shot. Perhaps doing so after we get all drunk means a better chance of success??? Laughing

The official contest results page (in Norwegian): http://www.nrk.no/pyro/og-nofx-supporten-gar-til/

Our new brand new previw-of-the-album page: http://www.do-mi.com/

Sorry for the spam, and I realize that this forum may not contain the highest concetration of NOFX fans, but right now I feel like I could die a happy man today (ok, say the day after the show).

by slaytanic on Wed Jun 11, 2008 9:36 pm
I just bought me a ADA MP-1 with footswitch off ebay, just got it and believe it or not everything doesnt work on it. I cant change settings, the up/down buttons have no function. I cant go to edit mode and change eq, gain, presence, chorus, nothing with the up/down buttons. Its fricken stuck at bass on 12, mids on 0, treble on 10.

The footswtich, it came with a midi cable so that was a bonus, too bad the display doesnt come on and the buttons dont work.

Oh, then opened up the amp to see if there was something loose and the tubes dont glow at all. There is a good amount of static that goes in and out when plugged in. Almost seems like there is a short somewhere.

Looks like this seller is gonna lose his 100% feedback if he doesnt get back to me REAL soon.

I have a little problem.

I have a Dean Razorback V Standard.

Now tomorrow im gonna switch out the neck pickup for a Duncan SH-4.

Im not a 100 on have to connect the cables though.

The original Dean pickup has the red and white cables solder togheter and nothing moore, the same goes for the duncan, i know that that is the way for thoes to be.

But for the rest, the dean pickup has it's black and bare solder togheter on the volume pot, and the green one to the toggle switch, and this is what's makes me worried, the duncan has the gren and solder togheter , and the black one free, to go in the toggle.

Could i just solder in the green and bare to the pot, and the black to the toggle, or should i change so it is like the dean?
the cables on the both are not exaktly the same colour's or types, but anyway?

I will appreciate any help you can give me.

Use toneport to record with a mic?
by Serbusfish on Thu Jun 12, 2008 12:36 am
n00b question, but can you use a line 6 toneport to connect a mic to a computer for recording? I mean decent recording? Because I noticed the toneport UX1 and UX2 have mic inputs, so I was thinking if I bought a decent mic like a shure sm57 i could plug it into the toneport and record my triple xxx? Would this work or am I missing something obvious? Because as far as my limited knowledge will stretch the toneport is simply an external soundcard, so im guessing it would work, but im not certain, so can anyone with more knowledge help me out?

But what is all of your opinions about the matter?

K.K.'s new speedloader
by Borock Yomama on Thu Jun 12, 2008 11:51 am
I like his new KxK Flying V and apparently he likes it enough to be playing it for the entire show. But I was wondering why, when they were building it, they bothered putting tuning heads on the guitar since the speedloader doesn't use them?

It's strange because KxK makes some wild headstocks and they should have done something wild on this guitar too.

This is my favorite K.K. V:

I forget who built it, but it used to be featured on the Kahler website with info on the builder.

Hello all,

Was looking for cases this morning and found a couple new cases By SKB. They have a Nice looking Flying V case and a slightly strange looking Explorer case. For $139 they look to be pretty sturdy cases. Have a look
Here is the flying V case:

and here is the Explorer case.

they both look like they will fit the Dean V headstock so Maybe these are a solution for those of us than don't want to tote a huge F-ing case around. So what do you guys think?

Revisiting my teen years with a guitar purchase
by Blazer on Fri Jun 13, 2008 12:53 am
The first ever gig I played was with a band called the NPK (No Problem Kids) and the guitar I used was an all black Vester Telecaster knock off which refused to stay in tune. I eventually sold it and bought myself a Squier Stratocaster which I'm still using this day.

But since a couple of years I found myself in a sentimental mood and went to search for my old black Vester or at least a guitar similar to it. Until last week that search was fruitless but...

I found one.

Image

Image

I stumbled upon it in my local shop where somebody brought it in after storing it underneath his bed for over 14 years, it's in MINT condition, or should I say Near mint because I replaced the crappy tuners with Gotohs. But because Vester is not really a big brand, it was cheap as chips, 89 Euros later it was mine.

It blows every current Squier clear out of the water, which in itself is funny because Saehan, the company which made Vester, also made the Squier II line in the late eighties and early nineties.

I already did some recordings with it backing the old NPK leadsinger who shared my nostalgia and remarked: "It doesn't have the same color but I sure could be fooled into thinking that you've got your old guitar back."

It wasn't very hard, I got a pass through a guy who had another one. Less than 40 fucking people!! It was INSANE. Best show I will ever see in my entire life. I was like 6 feet from James until about half way through the show. I kind of went to the back to take some pictures because the front was too insane! It was amazing. No security between the stage and me. The stage was one foot high, honestly. The new song they played was AMAZING. Straight up 80's thrash. Got to meet them outside but only got pics with James and Lars. I am fucking shocked out of my mind right now. They recorded the whole show for a DVD/Documentary. I got to see them like no one will ever see them and then tomorrow I get to see them in front of 80,000 people at Bonnaroo! So that's it.

I'm emailing myself some pics from my phone, I'll have them up in like 5 minutes.
Dean Guitars - POOR QUALITY?
by Pav on Fri Jun 13, 2008 7:11 am
I am a proud owner of Razorback Explosion, it's great but when I bought it a year ago I had to have a Dimebucker replaced as it simply failed to work....fair enough - these things happen.

In April of this year I bought a V Inferno. It looks absolutely awesome:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q9_0vO7tfE

Unfortunately since I purchased it I didn't manage to play on it.
When the volume is turned up the squealing coming from those pickups is uncontrollable. Turning down gain and using noise gates didn't help at all.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zChvjO7ZKfg

I play metal and turning gain too much isn't an option for me anyway.

On advice of some dude at Bill Lewington I had foam fitted underneath of both pickups to minimise the vibration and eliminate the feedback - no difference!

Finally I ask the guys at Harker and Howarth (Rimmers) in Bolton where I bought it from to send it back to Dean a.k.a Bill Lewington.

That was over a month ago. Bill Lewington people claim that they are dealing with massive back-log of repairs!!!! Mine is somewhere at the back of the que.

Does it mean that a lot of Dean guitars are s#%t and need fixing?

You tell me.

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone had any pics of what a blacked out V or Ml in cherryburst would look like. New amp build done - jcm800 clone. Clips included.
by trey85stang on Sat Jun 14, 2008 12:23 am
I finshed up the jcm800 conversion today (epiphone so cal 50 gutted and jcm800 circuit inserted). It sounds pretty decent so far.. im really digging it. Im giving it to my son to sue but at least its only 2 doors down if I want to rock out with it. Anyways here are a couple of sloppy clips for you guys.

Amp by itself: http://trey85stang.googlepages.com/jcm800clone-clip1.mp3

The cleans kind of suck because my preamp sucks and clips the signal... I need a better mic pre but I will live with what i got for now Very Happy

MEgadeth riff's, holy wars was boosted w/ metal zone (modded), the rest is sd1: http://trey85stang.googlepages.com/jcm800clone-clip2.mp3

I prefer the sd1, but the metal zone could probably be tweaked to sound better...

Truss Rod! here we go again..!!
by -JiMi DRiX- on Sat Jun 14, 2008 2:56 am
I always have to go and ask every time I think I need to tweak the truss rod since I dont want to F anything up. My Demonator has some fret buzz after you get to about the 7th fret and higher. i've adjusted the action at the bridge some, but I cant go any higher or else the action will be way too high.

Does this call for a tightening of the truss rod, or do I need to loosen it up? Then adjust the bridge/action again of course.

Any chance Dean will realease a MAB1 style guitar?
by edusty2010 on Sat Jun 14, 2008 3:28 pm
Like with an OFR, EMG's, 24 frets, ebony fretboard, unfinished maple neck but WITHOUT the paintjob? Honestly I really like the guitar, even if it had his name on it I'd still get it if it came in like a solid white or maybe even with a flamed maple top or something. Like I'm just not keen on having the flames graphic on my guitar. It'd be cool, yeah, but I think it would get old.

Any say on this from Dean? What about MAB? Would anyone else want something like this? I mean I know dean makes strat style shapes but I'm talking basically just the Armorflame with different paint. I really like the "sharp" strat style it's designed with.

Also as a side note, why do almost all deans come with LFR's? Just wondering...

Question about Scales.
by Dean_Lefty14 on Sun Jun 15, 2008 4:16 am
Hey guys, i know you get this alot, but i have a question about scales

a major scale is the notes from 0-12 and a minor is from 12-21(and so on) correct?? please correct me if im wrong.

but with that thought in mind, i was looking at a E Major pentatonic scale and it was showing me major and minors, it was the same lick with the major and minor

http://www.freeguitarvideos.com/LJ_R1/LJ10c.html

thats the place, but what i noticed is, toward the bottom it shows a minor lick, but it hits the 10th fret, why does it do that?

also, i was reading on dime's solo scale stuff, and it said that he mixed scales. How would you mix a scale, cause a scale is a pattern of notes, so if you change the notes in the scale, wouldent it no longer be that scale?
Ibanez V. WOW.
by * on Sun Jun 15, 2008 4:18 am
i went there recently, and boy do they ever take poor care of their guitars.

they now have a section called "lefty land".

however, this section is the same ole #$%&#@ they've always had. they never stock anything lefty other than epiphone les pauls and fender mexi strats.

i got down an Epi les paul standard from the wall and went into the soundproof "showroom" with the higher end amps. not 1 Marshall JCM in the entire store, not even the new KK model. instead i plugged into the little epiphone valve jr.

...NO SOUND.

wtf? try the toggle switch...THE WHOLE SWITCH ASSEMBLY comes out of the guitar. WTF? so i push it back in...and put that pos back on the wall.

i grab one of these ...

Image
this guitar is AWESOME. didn't have that crappy thin wizard profile (which is extremely thin and flat to me) instead it is more "gibson like" the input jack is on the inside of the lower horn (where it should be on a v, imo) except i was playing it upside down so it was on the inner top horn.

this thing played AWESOME, and i love the look of it. very nice.

this and the X series from the 80s are the only ibanez guitars i've ever played and liked.

how hard is it to get the controls put on the opposite side, and how much would that cost roughly? i'd REALLY like to own one of these things.

Guys I need some homework help. please answer a few question
by Lon on Mon Jun 16, 2008 1:47 am
Yes at 45 I'm taking classes and am halfway to my Bachelors degree. Anyway what I'd like for you guys to do, if you've got a few minutes to waste, is to simply answer a few questions regarding custom guitar bodies. For the sake of the exercise forget that there are already companies like Warmoth or USAGC or any of the others that already make them. I don't need any essays, just numbers, as follows.

Strongly agree - 5
Agree - 4
No opinion - 3
Disagree - 2
Strongly disagree - 1

Some of the questions are vague and are meant to be that way. Just copy and paste into your response.

1. Would you purchase a custom guitar body for $350 or less?

2. Would custom body shape influence your opinion?

3. Would custom electronics configurations influence your decision?

4. Would you prefer custom body material over custom shapes?

5. Would custom paint or finish colors be important?

6. Would the weight of the body be important?

Thanks in advance.

your ideal g3 line up
by Derivation on Mon Jun 16, 2008 6:13 am
i was just watching a video on you tube and got to thinking what my ideal line up for a g3 type show would be. now i'm not huge into that genre but there are a few players that i enjoy listening to on occasion. so after a little bit of thinking i figured my ideal G3 type show would consist of:

Paul Gilbert
Steve Vai
Micheal Angelo Batio

no particular reason for choosing them really, they're just 3 players who i enjoy listening to from time to time.

if you could have an ideal G3 lineup who would you pick?
looking for a drummer
by Derivation on Mon Jun 16, 2008 6:23 am
not sure if this is the right place to post this but JohnC, Brendan, and myself have started messing around with the idea of starting a sludge/doom metal band by sending some riffs and what not back and forth over the internet. it would be cool to be able to add a drummer to the mix seeing as we're 2 guitarists and a bassist. if any forum members are also drummers or know a drummer who might be interested in this please dont hesitate to send me a pm. this is just something we're doing for kicks and the sake of writing some music we feel like writing.

thanks for taking a look.

!!!!!!!!!! Eminence Gov'nor REVIEW!!!!!!!!!!!
by goop on Mon Jun 16, 2008 6:22 pm
OK first let me explain why I got these. I use a Line6 SpiderIII head and it requires two 8ohm cabs. I have one B52 4x12 with V30's and one GENZBENZ 2x12 stock. At practice or gigs I could never tell if the GB 2x12 was working. It seemed like the voicing of the V30 was more prominent. After doing some research I learned a little about SPL ratings and stuff. I then looked at getting another pair of V30's but the made in china and no savings passed on to us made me look at Eminince. After all the reviews I read I said f*ck it. My calculations were correct. I guess the combination of the voicing and higher SPL this speaker has they are noticably louder. I and so did the band notice the increase in volume and you could tell it was coming from the GB 2x12. That alone made me happy. As far as tone I would have to say more bottom end and a little less shrill that the V30. It does have the CRUNCH of the V30 also and very tight. The best way for me to describe it is move the voicing of the V30 about 15% towards the low end and it's there.

Now I gotta see if I'm gonna keep my V30's in my 4x12 or if I'm just gonna load my other GB 2x12 with Governors also. Or maybe the Gov's with the V30 in an x pattern in the 4x12.

I should have done this a lot sooner, especially at $30 less than the V30.

Just spreading some love for this thing. I'd swear there's a beast in this thing! I just came back from GC with some new strings, an employee there suggested a set of picks and I got a new strap. I just set myself up (I'm out of tune but it sounds sweet to the hear so I'm ok for now) and this thing screams. Sounds like it has a great fuzz sound when I do squeelies so all my squeelies bounce, it's amazing.

It comes with 3 channels - Clean, Overdrive and High Gain. Plus a seperate effects channel. The effects channel has reverb, chorus and delay. I keep reverb on 2 then chorus and delay off and this thing just screams.

Clean has volume, low, mid and high.
Overdrive has gain, low, mid, high and level (volume).
High Gain has gain, shape and level.

Oh, also got surfing with the alien today too. Great album Cool
So yeah, I totally suggest trying one out if you get the chance. This thing blew me away when I first tried it in GC and I bought it on the spot. Still amazing 3 days later and I don't think my opinion is changing any time soon.

$150 was all it costed me (before tax, ect.)

A question about the Dean's LFR
by _koppen on Mon Jun 16, 2008 10:43 pm
As you all knew the Floyd's on the Dean import's Razor v suck big time.

My question is, On those cheap LFR you screw down the whole arm in the bridge, wich sucks.
Is it possible to replace that arm with one where you just put down the arm, and then screw down a little brick around it?
Im sure you all know what i mean.

Hope some of you has some expriense so i can get an answer. Very Happy

University Gains Control Of DIMEBAG-Designed 'Razorback' Guitar Line - May 8, 2008

Ohio.com reports that the University of Arkansas now has licensing control over Razorback electric guitars, commemorating late PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott who was killed during a show in Columbus, Ohio.

Two Florida companies created the line and began selling the guitars after the 2004 death of Abbott. He was known for performing with a razor blade around his neck.

In 2007, the university sued, claiming the Razorback guitar brand infringed on the school's copyright. The Arkansas athletic teams bear the Razorback name.

A settlement filed on Tuesday (May 6) gives the university licensing control over the guitars, but the two companies get to keep selling them.

In an unprecedented three short years, the Razorback has become one of Dean's best selling and most recognizable guitar lines, with its barbed wire-like ultra-sharp points and massive presence. The Razorback is a 21st century form of the Classic Dean ML shape Dimebag Darrell first played over two decades ago.

In related mews, Armadillo Enterprises, parent company of Dean Guitars, has announced that Dean Zelinsky is no longer associated with the company. Mr. Zelinsky has been associated with Armadillo Enterprises and Dean Guitars since 2000.

In January 2008, Dean Guitars brought manufacturing for USA products, including Dean USA guitars and Dean USA custom pickup manufacturing, in-house at their world headquarters in Tampa, Florida. Mr. Zelinsky assisted in the transition.

Dean Guitars owner Elliott Rubinson said, "We have enjoyed working with Dean Zelinsky these past eight years, and look forward to exciting prospects at our new facility”.

Armadillo Enterprises is the parent company for Dean Guitars, Luna Guitars, Ddrum, and distributor for Nord USA.

Framus Dragon (GUITAR) 4x12 help?
by Meisterjäger on Tue Jun 17, 2008 10:55 am
So I've stumbled across a helluva deal on a Framus Dragon 4x12. Cab's loaded with Vintage 30's, but the jackplate is confusing as hell.

http://www.framus.de/modules/produkte/produkt.php?submenuID=14172&katID=11065&cl=EN

The picture is on that page.

The actual specs:

Power rating: 240W / 8 ohms / 112dB (mono) or 2 x 120W / 2 x 16 ohms / 109dB (stereo)

If I understand that correctly, the cab is wired for 240 watt at 8ohm in mono, and 2 pairs of 120 watt at 16ohm in stereo.

But the jackplate says the rating is 200 watt at 8ohm and 100 watt at 16ohm, and it says that over each jack input.

I know how to hook up heads and cabs properly and have done it for years... but I would NOT know what to do with that.

Anyone got a clue?

by Mobi on Tue Jun 17, 2008 2:56 pm
Since the OT discussion section has been deleted....

I am looking to meet some of the Dean forum people who plan to go to the Graspop Metal Meeting festival the last weekend of June. If you see this flag Image on the camping site, come closer and scream 'Dean guitars forum', you'll get a beer from me Wink Or if you can find me on the festival site we will be mostly standing on the left side of the half-liter bar, that's the bar just behind the PA tower on the mainstage.
Other Brands
by Wombat on Tue Jun 17, 2008 4:04 pm
A lot of things changed very quickly and I'm probably not the only member who won't know the rules immediately.
Where are the lines in the sand being drawn about mentioning other brands?
I came here originally because I've loved the brand for about twenty-three years (yikes). That's why I still come here.
I've seen MANY people come and go, but most of the ones that are stayers seem like good folk.

Now the questions. Are we allowed to mention other brands? I have a few guitars that I'm quite proud of. Is it fair to mention them?
Sometimes I've looked on slack jawed as people proudly state that they are going to buy a new Hagstrom because of the superior quality and value.
I've also seen many "Family Photos" and somebody may comment, "Hey nice collection! Nicest Caddy I've seen in a while. By the by, that's also the nicest D'Aquisto that anybody on the forum has."
I don't think anybody noticed, but sometimes I make a post called Retro NAMM. Last time it featured a row of vintage Mosrites. Is that bad form?
Are there firm answers to these questions, or are we all just figuring things out as we go along.
Does anyone know or want to take a shot...

First track off the new album, Folklore and Superstition - you can download the mp3 off Roadrunner Records website. Smile

Excellent opening track I reckon - really catchy chorus, I can imagine it being great live as well (with the group 'hey's in it).

Really, really love this band - their debut album (self titled) was fantastic, and can't wait til August when the second one comes out.

And I'm seeing them tomorrow at the NEC in Birmingham, along with Whitesnake and Def Leppard, woop! Very Happy

Any Dean forumites BSC fans/going to the NEC tomorrow???

I found this replay made by the moderators at the end of the "More Mods" thread after it was locked and sank to the bottom of the register. This will probably go a long way towards explaing just what is acceptable and what is not. I was afraid that not many of us would see it.

Guys...

Where does it state that you can only talk about Dean related stuff here?

Try reading it again. There is nothing posted that says it has to be DEAN RELATED. Our postings state GUITAR RELATED. This is a GUITAR forum. It clearly states this in the title of the page and in the header at the top of the page.

GUITAR RELATED means... artists (whether Dean related or not), concerts, guitar playing, guitar design, learning guitar, guitar tech questions, guitar groups, tabs, music, etc. which gives you guys a TON to talk about. Just post it in the General Forum.

Where does it state that you can't talk with your buddies here and continue to have a good time?

We simply don't want you to post about anything outside of the realm of GUITAR RELATED content. We don't want people posting about things that are offensive such as pornography, people with disabilities, and racially offensive material. We don't want you posting mean, slanderous or hateful comments towards members of this forum. We completely understand "ribbing" and doing things in good fun, but the audience here runs the gamut here from 12 to 56, male and even some female.

We don't want posts about your girlfriend issues, politics, religion, etc.; this has no place here. If you have a stance on those issues, then great! We respect that. Just post it respectively in a website that is not directly GUITAR RELATED .

You all still have a voice here and will continue so going forward. However, as in this case, before you start posting about "the powers that be" doing this or that, get your facts straight. Your passion about this forum is heard and appreciated, but why not channel that in to something positive for all users to enjoy?

If you post un-truths here in an attempt to stir up trouble, it will simply get removed. This is one of the most lax forums out there in the industry, use common sense, keep in ON TOPIC, and all will be cool.

Have a Nice Day!

I can't seem to find the off topic section, so I'm going to relate this to guitars by telling you there was a Jackson urrr booth thing where you could play guitar. Also there was Guitar Hero

Anyway, saw a few good bands, Kiss were hilarious, I was dancing away right at the back. Slept through Motorhead and Judas Priest.

Saw Dillinger Escape plan, absolutely nuts, same with Cavalera Conspiracy, a few old school Sepultura tracks went down too, biggest circle pit ever, not very good for my sun burn.

Offspring were probably the best for me, although I was pretty wasted, been a fan since I was about 9 years old, good to sing along and get into a nice friendly pit.

Job for a Cowboy, Annotations of an Autopsy and Trigger the Bloodshed were all amazing. No mistakes, great sound. All good musicians.

Municipal Waste had a few good circle pits and a hench wall of death, also a real weird looking guitar.

One of the other best acts was Lethal Bizzle, I was lobbing bottles and mullers rices back the way they came at the crowd haha. Serial, he did get mullered harsh by everyone, but I was about 2nd row so I got a nice pudding on my shoulder.

And now a bunch of pointless images

New Guitar Day - Pron
by Carlstrmm on Wed Jun 18, 2008 4:52 pm
Today it came. A few weeks ago i sent my MLF back to Steve at BRG. I think the edge knife was broken for the second time. Don't call me crazy, but there was nothing I could do about it. I brought it to tech after tech but still they tried and didn't know. I called up Steve and told him about the problem. Then i realized there was that white soltero i had been keeping my eye on. What i did was i asked steve if i could trade my ML in for a Soltero, and he said that wouldnt be a problem. (Steve = the man)

Just got it today. I love it. Beautiful looks, GREAT V neck, the only problem i had with it was that my neck pickup wasn't working at first. Eventually I got it to work by just jiggling the toggle, but i hope it stays that way.

All in all, this guitar is great. It really fits me, and im happy i got it.

I just have to find some black nobs to put into it! Rolling Eyes Laughing

Dean shirt??
by slaytanic on Wed Jun 18, 2008 8:46 pm
Just spotted this on ebay. Looks pretty cool but Im not seeing it in the Dean shop at all. However, the people selling it are a screenshop that makes custom prints for shirts and other stuff. makes me think that these guy might be pulling a fst one. Cool shirt, but legit?

Opinions/Advice Needed on Amps...
by Greg... on Wed Jun 18, 2008 9:15 pm
So... I would like to get a new amp because my Marshall is hopeless at volumes over 2 Laughing ...

I will be trading the Marshall and my Boss ME-50 towards a new valve amp and these are my options;

Orange Tiny Terror Head and 112 (Expensive, not enough gain, 7/15 watts might be too restrictive)

Peavey Valveking 112 Combo (Plenty of gain, awesome clean channel, 50 watts too much power to crank?)

Opinions would be much appreciated on other amps as well, I've just been checking these 2 out recently... Smile

Razorback V shaped neck?
by MustaineDean on Wed Jun 18, 2008 10:26 pm
So I know little about guitars and love to study what things are and have a crappy guitar but I'm buying a Razorback Explosion. Someone said it has a V neck and I know what it is but I just want to know wether it has good feel or not on the neck. I have longer fingers they're probably 7 inches on average. So which type of neck do you suggest?

Guitars in a Car
by atarilovesyou on Wed Jun 18, 2008 10:56 pm
So...the clan of Deans is going for a rather long road trip. I've done the dry run for packing the cases, and so far it's ok:

3 ML cases, stacked on their backs
3 more Strat type cases, on top of the MLs, on their sides
2 more cases in the trunk next to the 100W head

So...the question is, how safe is this? I put the more costly guitars in the back seat, but is this still safe? I mean, unless I hit some serious potholes or anything like that, am I risking some broken necks via boucing?

The cases that are resting on their backs, flat, that is? The cases on their sides are pretty safe, I'd say.

Also, I'm not sure how hot my trunk will get. I've done some tests with golf clubs, tennis rackets....driving around with them in the trunk on hot days and seeing how hot they get. I'm not sure but they didn't seem outrageously hot...they are solid body electrics after all, it would take considerable heat to damage them...I'm assuming.

I'm planning on driving very carefully, either way. I have a mini trailer, but I'm not trusting any guitars in there...way too bouncy, I'd think.

It's a LONG trip but the guitars are not staying in the car during the night, I'll transfer them to wherever I'm staying. Pain in the ass, but I just don't trust movers with my guitars.

Any comments, perhaps some advice?...thanks a lot.
which song should i cover?
by shread_bringer on Wed Jun 18, 2008 11:04 pm
i want to record a cover song but i cant decided. i ether want to do an old motly crue cover from the 80's era or do the song preashure my paramore. if your thinking, "i thought this kid said he was a thrash metaler, why is he thinking of paramore?" then check the song misery buiness cover this band did, i realy like it and i would do somthing like it to the other song. but if you think motly crue like i think you guys are going to say, then what song i can't decide.

Metallica Death Magnetic
by slaytanic on Wed Jun 18, 2008 11:14 pm
Some of you probably already know but yeah, thats what metallica decided to call thier new album. After listening to some samples on youtube, I cant say that it matches 100% to the title but well jsut have to wait and see once the album is released. Ive been a Metallica hater for quite a while since they changed thier style completely but I am starting to get excited to see what they have in store for us now, but Im still not gonna hold my breath. After seeing those recent videos, they indeed can play the old stuff liek it should be played, so as long as they try and keep that same vibe the new album should be good. Oh, and its about time they went back to the old logo.

small not really update on my ebay ripoff
by slaytanic on Thu Jun 19, 2008 1:50 am
Well, since the thread got deleted I figured I would post up again about the ADA MP-1 that I recently purchased. I did a little bit more messing with it and it seemed to have been working fine. Kris was right that it needed a 9v adapter for the footswtich, so that was all good. Well today I was playing it again and went to switch to a different preset and sure enough, the up/down buttons wouldnt work again. Originally, I went into edit mode to see what the presets ona channel were set at and it let me go to edit, but once I go to look at a preset, nothing happened. So I was like f-it, Ill ty a different channel and then it still wouldnt do anything except stay stuck on the channel it was on. This is really aggrivating to pay this much for a piece of gear that the seller says works fine and then you find out that it works, jsut not all the time. Its way too unreliable as I cant mess with something that only works when it wants to. I have emailed the seller again, still no response from this one. They did respond to my other emails but it was pretty much "it was working jsut fine up untl I put it into the box" Hopefully they will get back to me soon so I can get my money back.

Is there a time limit to file an ebay dispute? I really want to give the seller a chance to respond but I dont want to go past a deadline if there is one.

Can anybody who has them in a guitar post a picture of it?
I don't plan on getting a set right away as I just installed a brand new set of SD Blackouts in my 79ML. But they are still cool. You don't see them ever, everyone always has black.

Custom Stealth Finish
by ShreddyMcFuntits on Thu Jun 19, 2008 3:09 pm
well after not getting much help from the dime tribute section, I've had to decide on the finish for my custom stealth myself.
I've nailed it down to three possibilities:

1) a tribal design i made which i'll post a pic of as soon as i get my scanner working

2) Hell-o-flauge Shocked

3) this could be hard to design but i was thinking the dixe rebel flag in a rust finish - The Rusty Rebel Cool

which one should i go for? or if you have any other ideas, post em up
will this become a production model?
by shread_bringer on Thu Jun 19, 2008 5:15 pm
i would hope not becouse it's dime's shape. but the guy from morbid angel has a big name and this is diffrent from any other dean i've seen in a while. what do you guys think about this being a production guitar?

Buscarino custom Tele
by RC99 on Thu Jun 19, 2008 6:31 pm
I love my Buscarino electric solidbody. Anyone else here have one? or arch tops ? John makes mostly high end ($7K and up) arch tops for top session jazz cats like Pizzarelli etc.
He occasionally makes a custom order solid body and they are pretty rare - and awesome in build quality.

It's very versatile.
It has S Duncan P90s and a trem bucker. ...Wilky trem.
Sounds fantastic.
Very resonant.
I call it my Beck-Holdsworth hybrid.
Sounds like a tele/strat on steroids due to the position 2 and 4 sounds, and action wise... plays like a Carvin DC 127 fusion shred guitar. Inspires you to traverse new avenues.

The woodwork on the back of the neck is a thing of exquisite beauty.

Vintage Dean questions nobody asks anymore.
by JammerML on Thu Jun 19, 2008 7:45 pm
I have a feeling that there are fewer people posting whom actually collect Vintage Deans...mainly because I haven't seen a few questions in a long time... questions like "What's the difference between headstock series?" or "Why does mine have red fret marker dots?" So I thought we might play a game about vintage specs....I'll start by posting one spec I know that is unique, and everyone else join in by posting one spec that hasn't been posted....

ok, here goes....

The first 100 serial numbers (770001-770100)were never used, later giving way to the run of "The Lost 100".
Time for a pickup upgrade - help me decide!
by Jimmy King on Thu Jun 19, 2008 7:49 pm
Alright, I've got my little MLX and have now been playing long enough and still enjoying it that I'm sure I'm going to stick with playing. That means it's time for some inexpenisve upgrades and the pickups seem like the place to start. I'm just doing the bridge pickup for now.

Current gear:
Dean MLX
Roland Cube 20X
Crappy noob guitar player

I'm primarily into playing metal, especially thrash. I love some classic hard rock/metal - ac/dc, van halen, etc. and intend to be playing some heavier more modern metal, too - devil driver, lamb of god, and the like. I do not want to go with active pickups at this point.

After some research, listening to stuff, and talking to a friend who has played metal locally for years, I'm primarily looking at the following 4 pickups. What are your thoughts? Will I get what I want? Is there possibly a better choice given my gear?

1) Seymour-Duncan SH-4 JB
2) DiMarzio X2N
3) DiMarzio Evolution
4) Gibson 500T

I'm very strongly leaning towards the JB. I love me some classic Megadeth. I also read that the latest Body of Scars stuff was recorded using a JB when I did some searching on here and that's all pretty heavy. My only concern with the JB is that it seems to be very versatile and not initially designed for metal, so how much of that kick as metal sound is from also pairing it with the right amp, pedals, etc. and not going to happen with my little rig (within reason - obviously the cube 20x is never going to sound like full on marshall, randall, mesa, etc stack)? Also, the JB does not look as bad ass as the X2N

I scored a Purple Squier
by Blazer on Fri Jun 20, 2008 1:13 am
Yesterday I was over at a friend's when I saw the unmistakable headstock shape of a strat burried beneath some boxes and some other Jargon, I cleared it away and out came the carcass of a late eighties Squier Strat, the hardware had been (badly) spraypainted gold and the body had recieved multiple layers of metallic purple. I asked the guy what was up with that one and he said that it was a project guitar that he never found the time to finish, he dubbed it the "purple nurple" because it had been a pain for so long.

So I offered to buy it from him, he agreed and promptly handed me a box containing a black pickguard and pickups that had thick (and I'm talking about industrial size) electrical wires coming from them.

So when I got home I took all the parts off and gave them a paint thinner treatment, except for the tuners which are the real deal, no gold spray paint on those: genuine goldplated Gotoh's. After cleaning the parts up I decided to assemble it, I decided to ditch the black pickguard in favor of a vintage mint pickguard and when testing revealed that the pickups were dead as a doornail, I decided to ditch those too. I wired it all up to a five way switch and a master volume (I never use tone anyway)

Need info: 1950's Gibson, late 1800's violin & mandolin

Okay,

So I finally got to see all of the instruments that one of my family members has, and I was quite surprised to see such old instruments. All of these instuments are all original and in thier original cases. I actually played the mandolin and Gibson yesterday and
