This seems to have been getting worse in the past few months.I've mentioned this before and heard from some of you who've noticed the same thing. I have emailed Brad@deanguitars a while ago but had no reply.

I'd like to hear from someone who runs this forum as to why this is happening, if there is something we can do to help and if there is a plan to fix it.

I'm starting a petition, please add your name if you'd like to see this forum get fixed or at least get an explanation.

Metal/Metalcore - My band's new song

Did Dean ever come out with a Silverburst ML? Thanx
How is it that...
by Andro on Sat Oct 03, 2009 10:29 pm
You find a killer riff.
-Spend two days recording it, arranging it, finding other riffs and laying the basis for a song.
-Make other people listen to it, they all say it's nice.
-You're happy, you really like it, you go to sleep.
-Wake up, relisten to stuff to continue your work on it and find yourself thinking: "What's this POS I did yesterday ???".

Humbucker with Single Coil Tone?
by classic_rocker978 on Sun Oct 04, 2009 5:09 am
Heya guys... got a Hum/Hum guitar that I'm retrofitting parts for... Im not too fond of the humbucker tone, they are often too muddy and dark for me.

So what is a humbucker that has a relatively Single coil like tone?

I can find...

Humbucker from Hell

&

Eric Johnson Custom

any others?

They dont even need to sound like a SC... just a really clean sound, no mud. I'm talkin Chords with slight distortion on the neck pickup.

Like that single coil clarity ive grown to love... Watchya guys think? Know of any pickups that fit this description?

Such an amazing mixture of heavy guitar, showmanship, exotic musical landscapes with a heavy dosage of Zappa-esque composition thrown in, imo this DVD is a must for each and every musician on this planet, regardless of what music you listen to or what you play.
Here's an extended trailer for it; if you get the chance to buy the DVD, please do - your mind will be blown out your ass!!!

Getting ready
by Blind Theory on Sun Oct 04, 2009 10:37 pm
Ok, so you might know that I am getting a 7 string. If you don't, now you know. Anyway, it happens to be a strat. Go figure. Well, I am beyond used to v's so I am going to have to get used to the strat shape again. I decided I would break out the old strat and work on that half the time. Then the other half would be the v. Just to prepare. Well, I never realized just how thick that thing is. IT IS MONSTEROUS! So, I got to thinking, if I play that a lot, not onyl will I get used to a strat but when I get to a guitar with a thinner neck, my playing would be improved over time. Does this sound like it would work? So far I think it is. I played the strat then went to the V and everything on the neck seemed so fast and easy. Is this a good idea?

Tube Amps WIN!
by Sceptre on Mon Oct 05, 2009 2:12 am
Hey guys.

Well recently I came into a new "amp". Its actually meant for a stereo system, however, me and my dad found a way to run a guitar through it, its from a company called Jolida, and it is 75 watts of all-tube goodness. We hooked up some real nice old JBL L-5's (according to my dad, the last of the good speakers made by that company) and used my moms old karaoeke machine(It has a 1/4" mic input, but hey, who said I gotta put a mic in there? Twisted Evil )as an input source for the guitar. We just wired it all up so the guitar would play through the tube amp to the speakers. After some EQ tweaking with my multi-effects pedal, I got an absolutely unbelieveable sound out of this rig, especially compared to my old setup of my tiny Line6 15 watt. This thing is louder, stronger, better, and 20x more responsive than my old rig. To be honest I was excited when we were hooking everything up but I did have my doubts about how it would sound, but I've gotta say I think my little makeshift rig is up there with some of the big companies. I'll post some pics when I'm able to, and maybe a video if anyone wants to hear it. Some may disagree, but I think its totally awesome Twisted Evil

EDIT: Pics, first my rig, then my dads homemade tube amp/speaker stereo system.

Yes, those are super bouncy balls, they help stem the vibration of the amp to the surface it is on and vice versa.

This is what it looks like in the dark, not a very good pic, but thought I might post it anyway.

By they way, my dad has asked me to mention that his system is a whopping 8 watts!

New Song: Doomy/Stoney/Sabbathy/Chunk for that ass.
by WH on Mon Oct 05, 2009 8:09 am
My old bassist came up for the weekend. It's been a while since we've hung out, so the party was on! We have been in a few different bands together, so its pretty easy for us to write music on the spot.... Since we had not hung for a while, I wanted to see if we could still do that....And we both agreed to just say %$#@! it, and have a good time even if we couldnt manage to make any music. Laughing

So anyway, our efforts produced this:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=943349&songID=8180889

The song is called "Nations Would Crumble". It was a lot of fun to write/ record...And is best enjoyed during, or after a tastey bowl load or spliff.:agreed:

All the guitar tracks were done on my new AxeFx Ultra, which is obviously an amazing piece of gear.

So, I've read about the patented simulclass function on a number of Mesa ads ( must have something to do with the Mark V Surprised ). I'll assume that the patent is the reason that I've never seen this feature on another amp.

Do you Mesa guys use it? How does the amp react when running in class A and A/B mode together?

Need HELP choosing a pup for my Dean Caddy select ...
by e21guitar on Tue Oct 06, 2009 8:48 pm
i have a Dean Caddy Select - which I love in many ways, but after a year or so of playing it I wanted to change from the stock pickups as they just seemed too sterile and not enough punch or life to them.

I first tried a Duncan Distortion (SH6), but it was too shrill and harsh for my tastes. I now have a Duncan Custom (SH5) installed, and while it is better - it is still not the ideal sound I am looking for. The Custom is a little twangy and almost seems to have a midrange "honk" similar to a very subtle wah effect. I am looking for something a little smoother sounding. I play mainly hard rock styles, with a little metal here and there (think Godsmack meets Megadeth).

I had a JB pickup in a Schecter guitar that I have since sold that sounded great at standard tuning, but it mushed out with anything detuned (not sure of that was the guitar or the pickup that caused that), but I did like the smoothness of that sound. I play my Caddy in dropC tuning ...

Any suggestions on a smooth / balanced hard rock pickup for a Caddy in dropC tuning?

Bernie Rico JR Vixen Hybrid
by rridner on Wed Oct 07, 2009 4:51 pm
This is the guitar that warranted the sale of my beloved Moser Bastard V. I had always hoped that one day I would get the opportunity to check out a Bernie Rico guitar, but the price tag of the Handmade USAs made that for the most part a pipe dream - much like owning a USA Dean. When the Hybrids were announced/released - it seemed a bit more feasible, but still kind of hard to spend $1500 on an import guitar that I had never physically seen or played. A few wks ago, I was browsing the Rico website - just checking things out and noticed the Hybrids had gone down in price from the original $1500. I decided to give them a call. Much to my surprise Rico JR himself answered the phone! We talked about this and that for a while - mostly gear, guitars, etc - the usual stuff we all discuss. After the normal topics had gotten out of the way, I told him I was interested in getting my hands on one of the Hybrid Vixens. He told me he was discontinuing the line, to focus more on the Handmade stuff & that he was blowing the remaining Hybrids out! The price he gave me was downright shocking! Rico JR is a stand up guy and has been a pleasure to deal with. He is very accomodating and easy going. If you have ever thought about getting a Rico Hybrid - NOW is the time to do so! He has a few left in Black, Gun Metal & Metallic Blood Red. You will be shocked at the quote you receive! He sets the guitar up to the tuning of your choice & with your preferred string gauge as well. My Vixen should be here next week and it is coming with all kinds of case candy - Hardshell Case, Certificate of Authenticity, Rico JR Guitars T-Shirt and a Guitar Tool Kit! I cannot wait for this guitar to show up at my door! If it is anything like I have heard and read - it will smoke any guitar I have touched!

How many guitar collectors do we have out there?
by Rip DEATH on Thu Oct 08, 2009 7:55 am
Well you guys suck!!! LMAO...(You don't really suck, that part is a joke).

Seriously though, companies and collectors that try to horde guitars and other equipment to turn a profit in 20 years are the reason we are paying so much for Geets made in the US now.

A guitar is made to be played, not to sit under beds or in closets or on display racks.

Play the shite out of those things and forget about it. We need to do something to lower the prices.

Now, I have about 4 guitars considered collectable, but I play them like crazy. I bought them because I liked them and they play, sound, and look amazing.

I hate collectors, but I all for the guitar player! Mad

I understand a person can do what they want with their money, but what is your opinion on collecting and prices.
Pickup advice
by z_armorflame on Thu Oct 08, 2009 12:42 pm
I want new pickups for my Dean From Hell CFH, I'm looking at Blackouts, but I don't know if they'll fit. (Never changed pickups before). Is this a good idea, or what? I want Blackouts, I've heard them, and I love them. From other's mistakes, I've seen the problems with putting Blackouts in MAB signature guitars because of the very much lower output of the single coil. What should I do?
Ok,,, I admit it...

How to identify a Dean copy?
by Mad Raxz on Thu Oct 08, 2009 4:03 pm
I`m in the process of buying a 7 string Razorback on eBay and am worried about receiving a Chinese copy. I can recognise a Gibson copy but couldn't tell a Dean, please help.
Some people have posted that the 7 string Razorback have the bevels painted crookedly, and that there are also some paint or varnish bumps so I assume that this is normal.

let's define "Mint"
by WyldeDime on Thu Oct 08, 2009 4:50 pm
Saw this elsewhere and thought I would share...

From a frustrated CL shopper:

______________________________________________________
MINT Stratocaster. I know it is only a fender, but the Squire
designation give it Class! I've only played it a few times, and
loaned it out many times, but it is MINT! There is some rust on the
springs on the bridge...You can't really see the crack in the
pickguard(although the super-glue is visible), Peanut butter sticky
fingers has very slightly discolored the back of the neck, but the
finish is coming off anyway so no biggie, the frets are worn slightly,
probably from where they rubbed against the luggage rack when I
travelled with it, One knob is missing, but the post is loose enough
that it turns just as easily, the input jack is a little loose, so the
guitar cable makes it crackle and pop a bit when plugged in, The D
string keeps breaking, but this string isn't needed on every chord
anyway, and finally, there is a slight flat spot on the body where
the strap button fell out, allowing the guitar to hit the floor, made
a cool sound, but left a flat spot. Can't hardly see it. Like I
said...MINT. This is a STEAL. You could buy a new one for less, but
this one has character...and is...like I say...MINT!

Sorry, no pic of the actual guitar, but this one is similar, not the same color or model, but it is a guitar.
Guitar Stands
by EJAWD on Thu Oct 08, 2009 6:01 pm
I would like to potentially get a new guitar stand and id like for it to be Nitro safe and have the capability of holding either my Dean Stealth or Gibson LP.

Im pretty sure that hercules stands has one with that will hold the dean stealth but what model # is it?

If anyone knows the model # or has any suggestions on other stands that work great, let me know.

So again, huge thanks to you Steve. I'm sure I speak for many when I say this: don't know what I would've done without ya!

I Just Now Realized Iron Maiden has Awesome Tone!
by classic_rocker978 on Fri Oct 09, 2009 3:15 am
I dont like alot of their tones, mostly rhythm tone... but their album "Brave New World" (came out in 2000) has overall awesome tone.

Production quality is close to Opeth, which I think manage to produce great tones consistantly.

Anyone have any idea if they were using stacked singles (jb jr/hotrails) or Full sized buckers (duncan Jb/Dimarzio super distortion)

Oh how I love them lol...

The solo tone near the end of the song is amazing to me.

What do you guys think about Dean USA Professional Series?
I have a chance to convert my ESP M-II or V on Dean USA Hardtail Pro.

Custom Cases
by Catbox Brown on Fri Oct 09, 2009 5:24 pm
My biggest gripe with Dean Guitars is their cases. I don't mean to sound like a whiner, this is a huge problem for me though. I have had flight cases made before but what I really need is a lighter case similar to the light-leer. I just got off the phone with Gator who obviously has the resources and they told me they won't make one. Any suggestions? GFS Power Rails - useless (for you) review;
by Evil Panda on Fri Oct 09, 2009 6:19 pm
I just installed a GFS power rails in a bass of mine. Thought I'd share with you guys, since I totally approve of people saving money and still getting awesome quality stuff.

First of all, the pickup seems higher quality than Dimarzio or Duncan. I dunno if it's really made of better stuff, by oh man, they're shiny. I took the pickup apart, and found the same magnet structure as an X2N-- pretty much sealing the fact that this is an X2N copy (some reviews say otherwise-- but it is).

Each coil is individually wrapped and potted, then the whole thing is wrapped and potted. The pickups are dead quiet. Even as a single coil there's hardly any hum at all. And, yeah, it splits well.

The pickup is super loud, with as much low end as the old Tele bass pickup this bass had. The highs are very bright-- and very strat-ish when tapped.

Oh, and they're 35 bucks and came mounted in a pickup ring with the leads ready to be soldered.

Highly recommended. In case anyone was having any doubts about the GFS line.

Unfortunately, for most of you, any review I can give of tone is sorta useless, but I'll tell you it's very familiar of the X2N I used to have-- but it's in the neck position so it's hard to compare.

well a few days ago....

this isn't my camera. i lost my camera due to sisters wedding and having over 50 people staying in the same house...and the sad thing is, we aren't even greek! regardless, borrowed the camera from my family friend for a quick 4 pic shoot. i'll be getting a new camera soon, so i'll post better pics then.

in the mean time, enjoy. and sorry for the month long tease. but i guess you weren't complaining. Razz

and yeah, i got this one from brewski. for anyone interested, brewski is an AWESOME person to work with for trades or sales or whatever.

i knew only 2 people had this guitar, blackend, and brewski. blackend on several occasions said that his was his favorite and best playing guitar, so i didn't bother him.

but anyways, heres the PS 924.
i need to upgrade its inlays, and still have to give it a setup and a trial run. and since i'm ampless right now, i dont exactly how it sounds, but plays great! :bigthumb:

thanks brewski!

So I walked into guitar center today with no intention purchasing a guitar, and I possibly made off with the deal of the year (at least for me Laughing ). I wandered over to the used gear to play an ESP viper that they have had for a few months, and I saw an Ibanez RG7321, with seymour duncan blackouts and an upgraded nut for a mere 200 dollars (a set of 7 string blackouts by themselves are 175). I have been looking for a good cheap 7 for a few months so I did not hesitate to buy it. It sounds great, and plays great, and it was a phenomenal price. Life is good Very Happy .

No pron tonight, but i will hopefully take some tomorrow or later this weekend.

Ok, I am preparing to get a 7 string. There are a few things I need to know though. Here is a list of things I would appriciate getting some info on:
What are good string gauges for drop tunings?
What is the 7 string equivalent of drop c?
Since it has an extra string, is it refered to as Low b, High b?

That is about it so far. Not very hard stuff. Just stuff I can't figure out. Thanks!
Dean-Buying Advice Needed
by jay h on Sat Oct 10, 2009 8:57 pm
I've recently come to the conclusion that the V-profile neck on my '03 Pro Series ML is quite simply the most comfortable neck in the history of stringed instruments. I'd like to buy another USA Dean to complement it, but I'm concerned that the necks on some of the other models and vintages may not have the same "feel." Having slightly undersized hands, I find that neck construction (specifically, width, thickness, radius, and profile) is the single most important factor in determining whether a guitar will help or hinder my playing.

My question, then, is this: how much variance exists between the V profiles used on USA Deans throughout the years? Are some slimmer than others, or are the differences minor and attributable solely to production tolerances? I'll most likely be purchasing from a remote seller, so playing each potential buy in advance is unlikely to be an option.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The other guitarist that I play with just bought one of these and stuck it in an Ibanez basswood 7 string. Jesus man...what a brutal pickup! Thick as all hell with a huge bottom end and very very tight. Not sure how it would sound in a Mahagony guiter, maybe a Nailbomb might work better with the darker wood but damn I have to score one of these. First time I ever got to hear and play a Bare Knuckle because they just aren't as common as the other aftermarket brands. Highly recommend that ya'll check these p/u's out if you haven't already. Bit pricey but damn they are worth it.

Speaker combinations
by nytan on Sun Oct 11, 2009 7:07 am
I'm looking for a new combo amp right now and am up in the air about what speaker setup I want.

I've owned numerous 1x12s and also have a Marshall JCM2000 4x12.

I've played through a few 2x12's. Namely a Mesa Rectifier, Peavey JSX, and Vox VT100 but have never played through a 4x10.

Can anyone explain some of the sonic nuances between a 1x12, 2x12, and 4x10 assuming the wattage is the same for all? I generally don't like my tone to be trebly. I would assume more speakers accounts for a tighter low end.

Please help me choose (which new Dean I buy)
by PDogg81 on Mon Oct 12, 2009 3:12 am
Hello all,

Even though I just got a new guitar about a month ago, this Amazon blowout is hard to pass up. Currently I'm having trouble choosing whether to get the Snakeskin Stealth or the Black Splittail w/ Floyd.

I very recently bought a Razorback Shards and love it, but I don't want to get the exact same guitar even though it's selling at a crazy price. So anyway, let me lay out my thinking and hopefully a couple of you can help me figure this out. Here's a list of factors I'm rolling around in my head:

I prefer the traction knobs on the Stealth, and there are 2 volume controls on that guitar instead of 1 and 1 on the ST.

I like the finish better on the Splittail; I think the snakeskin might be a little too much for me.

I spoke to a forum member last night who'd previously had both and said the build quality seemed better on the ST.

I prefer the Stealth body slightly, but I'm concerned about multiple reports of it being overly neck heavy.

This will be used to play primarily metal, so I may need to swap a pickup or two if using the Splittail. The Stealth comes with a dimebucker, but that makes the guitar almost the same as my RB.

I'm currently leaning towards the Splittail, assuming that I'll need to change the bridge pickup at some point (although I'll give it a fair shake if I buy this guitar). If anyone has any opinions or help to share with me in this process, it would be appreciated. I've been staring at these things on the computer for hours. I'm especially interested in hearing from those with a floyded Splittail, since there are a few pics of new Snakeskin Stealths on the forum now.

when I got together with some friends for some jamming some time

new hybrid guitar day!!
by soliloquy on Mon Oct 12, 2009 5:14 pm
yey!!! so this lil guy, if you've been following me for the last few months, have had my attention for quiet some time now. at first i tried creating an agile hybrid, but kurts a bit unsure of it, and not too many people seem interested in it. people recommended me the Michael Kelly guitar, and though they played nice, they sounded very horrible plugged in. sure, they have a fishman peizo, but it sounded more like a semi-hollow than a hybrid guitar. the taylor T5 is a tad too expensive, and the nut is a bit narrow on it for an acoustic. :S. crafter was the only one that made sense to me...so this guitar had been hanging at the store for a few years now and was priced at over a 1000. days to weeks to months to years, the price slowly crept down. i got it just under the half point. Smile

the guitar unplugged sounds more acoustic-y than a taylor T5. the T5's sound for some reason is only coming out of the bridge and it seems the entire body doesn't want to resonate. so yeah, its fairly loud. not loud for a jam with other acoustic guitars as it will get muted out(almost). but plugged in, it sounds like a guitar that is 100 times its size! its peizo is very full and round sounding. plus, the controls it gives you are amazing. an awesome toggle switch from the lip stick pickup to the peizo, it almost sounds like two guitars going at it at once, or a 12 string. interesting tones to have with that sliding switch. so far, i'm really happy with it! its action is great too, and best of all, its bridge doesn't require any silly pins. as a result, the wood around the pin, or the pins themselves are not getting harmed, and as a result, no need to worry about the wood getting damaged down the years. i've seen it happen to really expensive guitars and really cheap guitars too....so yeah. another great thing is that i tend to tap on the body when i'm finger picking. since this is a peizo, i cant tap on the body to make it sound, so tapping on the bridge/saddle fixes that 'problem' right away. Smile

and the camera is my dads samsung sl620...it seems to take decent pics. :S its macro seems lacking though...

anyways, enjoy

i really have no idea how this guitar was made! the body seems to be one piece, but its painted black. there are no control plates of any sort on it with the exception of these two lil screws on the back, that i THINK control the height of the single coil pickup. aside from that, there is not a single way for all of that to fit through..:S

Temple of the Dog reunion...
by Trashed on Mon Oct 12, 2009 5:25 pm
Sort off:
Quote:
The much-lauded one-time group, Temple Of The Dog, had a reunion of sorts last night at the Pearl Jam concert in Los Angeles, according to a Rolling Stone report. It all happened midway through the set when Chris Cornell appeared on stage and the band performed their classic hit, "Hunger Strike".

Check out the performance here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLo5miR0dJY

Also Jerry Cantrell was at the show and came up to jam at the end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjPIx5IUcj4

Seems like a great night... How come that never happens over here!!

First off, Bernie is a pleasure to talk with. Very Helpful and goes above and beyond the customers expectations.

These guitars come in from Korea very Rough. Then Bernie installs the fretboard all hardware and final finishing. Plus setup.
I reserved number 19 of 30 of the Black ones. They come with EMGs and I asked him if the pups were all ready installed. He said not yet. I expressed my desire for differnt pups to go in it and he hooked me up with a set of Seymour Duncans a JB in bridge and a 59 in the neck. They are cream colored to give an offset to the all black of it and to accent the natural finished back of neck. He also is installing the old BC Rich top hat knobs. This axe is gonna be SMOKIN'.

Windsor cabs?
by guitarist1993 on Tue Oct 13, 2009 10:14 pm
So I went to GC yesterday, and got to play around with a few Peavey halfstacks. Started on the 3120, moved on to the ValveKing, then finally the mighty 6505+. I was actually disappointed with the 6505, it's not much of a low volume amp lol. The VK sounded pretty good for the price, if I was in the market, that'd be a pretty good choice for a halfstack, I think. But still, the 3120 stole the show, as I expected.

What I didn't expect was the suckiness of the cab (I think). I know how the XXX/ 3120 sounds through a matched cab, but this one was running through a Windsor cab.

The head itself was pretty tight, but I could that the cab was just pushing out floppy, muddy bottom end, and no matter much I cranked the mid knob, I just couldn't get that percussive punchy tone that I know the 3120 has somewhere in it.

Is it the cab's fault, or was there something else? (Floor model, GC employees, etc?)

Stepping on cables while plugged in..
by Vince on Wed Oct 14, 2009 12:43 am
So last night marks the 19th or 20th time I've stepped on my guitar cable while walking to or from my amp, thus ripping the whole jack from the guitar. This time a wire ripped clean off from the input jack and now I am without sound for a couple days. frackin bummer. I want to go wireless so bad. There are so many holes drilled and screwed into that part of the guitar there is barely any solid wood left to hold it on anymore. Time for longer screws or a bigger jack plate to be able to screw into solid wood again. Such a piss off.

EDIT: Anyone know of a company that make jack plates bigger than the ones that come on a stock Dean?
It's a 79ML, but that doesn't matter really. I just need one bigger than the one that came stock on it.
Marshalls
by prozach32 on Wed Oct 14, 2009 2:35 am
In the last few months I've aquired 2 Marshall amps. They were both givin to me by friends who had no use for them. After trying them both out they are both F'd up. I guess that's why they were free.
1)A valvestate 40v. Works fine for about 10 mins or so and then begins to fade in and out when it wants to. Adjusting volume, gain, etc seems to have no effect on this problem. Also there is no clean channel at all.
2)A valvestate vs100. This will play fine for 3 mins or less and then starts making this gawd awful GRRRRR GRRRR GRRRRR noise whenever a note is played. Again, playing with the knobs seems to have no effect on this problem.

I ask all you amp gurus who know much more than I. Is it something simple I can do myself or should I take them to a tech? What's a ballpark figure for repair? Is it worth it or are they just fuct? Any and all help/advice would be appreciated and thanx in advance

Kramer guitar. Need some Info quickly
by deansman90 on Wed Oct 14, 2009 11:21 am
Hey. I found this Kramer Classic 1 strat style guitar on the local classifieds. I looked on the Vintage Kramer website and also on Ed Roman's site for more info.

From what I can gather. Unless it has "Focus" on the headstock. Or the Neptune N.J. Made in USA neck plate on it.... Then it could possibly be an american made Kramer guitar.

The people want $150 bucks for it. Has a Floyd Rose on it. If it is an american made Kramer. The pickups are Seymour Duncans. Looks in quite good shape also. The camera flash blocked out what it says on the headstock. I can make out Kramer on it. But nothing else.

Here is the link to the ad: http://classifieds.castanet.net/show.../548353/cat/23

Here is the links to the Vintage Kramer and Ed Roman's site for the details on the guitar: http://www.edroman.com/guitars/kramer/info.htm http://www.vintagekramer.com/company47.htm

If anyone could tell me any more about this guitar and if it's an american made from what you can tell from the pictures and what both sites said. That would be awesome. I need some advice on what you think it might be. Either a real american made Kramer or a korea.

thanks

Best $150 Amp ever!!
by hellboundinFTworthTX on Thu Oct 15, 2009 2:19 am
Just got this yesterday, scored it for $150 buy it now on Ebay last week. Marshall valvestate 8100. I have to say this is the most heavy freakin' Marshall ever made, period! I stuck a new JJ 12AX7 in it and fired it up. The clean/crunch channel are meh..kind of crunchy Marshall tone, OD1 is a slight step up. But when you kick in OD2 and dial this thing in it's total freakin' BRUTAL METAL. It even gives my Madison Prophecy a run for it's money on this channel. Brutal, tight, cutting distortion, and when I added a little OD pedal to the front it kicked it into an even higher gear. I know Marshall and Brutal don't go in the same sentence, but this one does it, no classic Marshall tone here, just raw badass distortion, like no Marshall I've ever heard. Thanks to RobBouchardDeanml for turning me on to this amp!
Listen to Prong "snap your fingers, snap your neck" and that's the tone you can get right out of the box.

My solution to Great Live tone!
by classic_rocker978 on Thu Oct 15, 2009 4:37 am
Well.. I'm sick of all the variables that play a role in my tone.

First off I'm getting an attenuator.

Then I'm gonna grab two 31 band EQ's. One for up front of the amp... another for the effects loop.

Now I can always have my amp cranked. If I need to be quieter and cannot crank my amp. I'll dime the attenuator. Then with the 31 band EQ's I will notch out the slight fizzyness that the attenuator causes.

I'm going to get a flat response speaker... maybe an evm12l or eminence delta pro. That way my tone sounds the same from loud to quiet.

Im going to get pickups that are pretty tonally balanced as well. No major cuts or boosts anywhere. Preferably somewhat low output.

I should be able to go from a loud yelling volume to 50watts cranked and have my tone remain intact.

--------------------------------------------------------

Now my question is... can I use something like these:

Behringer 31 band Dual Channel EQ

ART 31 Band Dual Channel EQ

Is there any difference between using one of these and an mxr 6 band eq? Besides the additional 24 bands?!
speaker question
by revolutionman on Thu Oct 15, 2009 6:07 am
i am gonna load my randall cab with new speakers.

Option A: 4 vintage 30's

Option B: 2 vintage 30's and 2 G12H 70th aniversary 30 watt speakers

Or.....your suggestions

I am looking for a good metal tone,i heard mixmatching speakers sound good.

If you make a suggestion please go to americanmusical.com cause thats where im ordering from.

Need advice on which multitrack recorder to purchase...
by Rip DEATH on Thu Oct 15, 2009 8:47 am
I know there are a lot of players on this site that record tracks and I was hoping someone could give me some advice. I want to lay down about 6 demo quality tunes by spring time and I wanted to make the right gear purchase to do it. I was going to get a Mac computer because of the garage band software, but I have also considered a TASCAM 2488 Neo, a TASCAM DP-02CF 8 track, or something else.

Could someone please shed some light on the best demo quality device or should I go with a Mac PC or Cakewalk, etc...

The demo will be drums, bass, and 2 guitars. I plan on finding a singer by the time the music is done and then adding a vocal track once it gets written.

Why wait until Spring time? I'll be in Alabama at a military school for 2 months and then on leave for 30 days.

Thanks for your help.

Need some help guys.
by Typhaon on Fri Oct 16, 2009 4:26 am
So my bands finally found a bass player to play for us about 2 years after our inception. For those two years me and my drummer have been shelling it out in this little back room of the local youth club. Now, in exchange for keeping our little room, my best friend, our drummer, who in my opinion is the best sound guy in all of the southern maryland area, has tirelessly worked his ass off for free, fixing and maintaining the sound system night after night to keep the place running so bands could play there.

The original idea was if we kept all of our equipment in that room we could use it to practice, they never needed it so we thought it was fair, and we even asked the manager of the club and he said yes it was fine. To make a long story short, we have been kicked of our room now, and we have no place to practice, our band is finally able to play again, and we have no room to do it.

Since our own places of residence our out the question, be it parents, neighbors or lack of space, I could really use some ideas for practice spaces, just enough for one room where we could jam and write music. Any help would be appreciate.

i posted before about how happy i was that i got a randall rx30d 1x12 combo. and i still love it theres just one problem, the volume keeps cutting out on me. but not all the way, it just gets really quiet all of a sudden.

now i have opened it up and jiggled every wire connection i could find and got nothing. finally i got stressed and (yes i know it wasnt smart) i bonked it really hard on the top and bam! i was back.

but that was a temp fix cause when i palm mute and chug its like it vibrates the unit too much and the thing goes out again. i wiggled the cable in the input and that cause the problem to come and go so im pretty sure i have narrowed it down to the input jack. but at the moment i just have to keep hitting it when it goes out.

what say you wise ones of the Dean forum? should i get a new input jack? are they easy to install at home?

on an unrelated note, my new puppy is sitting in my lap as i type this and the little bugger keeps farting and it effin stinks!

Are you a gear Addict?
by clmazza7 on Fri Oct 16, 2009 5:15 pm
Great article in Premier Guitar by Steve Ouimette!

Even in this economy, addictions run wild. Just take a look at some of the popular gear forums and you’ll see that guitars, amps and pedals are being bought and sold en masse. Maybe the prices have come down, and maybe it takes a little longer for an item to sell, but it’s definitely still happening. I recently sold an amp and was stunned when ten minutes after placing the ad there were over 100 views and two offers. It sold within 12 minutes at the full asking price with no reservations whatsoever. Now I’m not saying this is typical (this amp is extremely popular in some circles and doesn’t usually come up for sale) but it does validate my point.

To help determine if you are a gear addict I’ve put together a set of symptoms derived from conversations with others in the 12-step tone program (“Hello, my name is Steve Ouimette, and I’m a gear addict”). Be honest with your answers and the truth will reveal itself. You may even come up with a few of your own criteria that will help you come to grips with the specifics of your particular addiction. Let’s begin. You might be a gear addict if:

1-You find yourself saying the next guitar will be your last purchase…at least for a while.

2-The amp you bought just last week isn’t as good as the one you read about this week

3-Mustard caps sound better than Orange Drops but you can’t remember your nephew’s birthday

4-It bums you out that your fingerboard isn’t Brazilian

5-You constantly find yourself putting together lists of what you can sell to fund other gear purchases

6-You take delivery of equipment at your office or a friend’s house so your wife doesn’t see another box arrive at the house

7-You actually consider the cosmetic similarity to another amp or guitar so when your wife spots it you can say “That one? Nah, I’ve had that for a long time now. You remember, it’s the…”

8-Your friends don’t want to hang out anymore because all you talk about is gear

9-It concerns you and ruins your practice session that your frets aren’t properly dressed

10-All the boutique builders are on your speed dial, including the spot where 911 was programmed in

11-You can hear the difference in cable directionality but can’t remember to take out the trash

12-You install mirrors in your practice room so you can ogle your ten-top

13-All of your saved websites are forums and music stores…and you check them hourly

14-You need to rent a storage facility to stash the gear that’s out of rotation at the moment

15-You have the latest issue of Premier Guitar in your bathroom instead of Playboy

If any of these statements ring true, you are probably a gear addict. Now, I’m not saying that’s a bad thing at all…quite the contrary. It’s healthy to enjoy yourself and discuss your passion on forums and get excited about the myriad of new and used guitars, amps and pedals out there. Gear is something that binds us together and it’s the reason I’m writing this right now.

However, consider when you got your first guitar and the rush of excitement that overcame you just thinking of the possibilities. If you can muster up some of that awe of that first guitar and amp, you can also enjoy what you have and really make the most of it. Think about the hundreds of hours you spent with just that one instrument and all of the great things that came along with that dedication. It’s a wonderful thing. So make sure you enjoy what you have…and if you don’t I’ll probably take it off your hands!

What I love the most about Dean guitars...
by clmazza7 on Sat Oct 17, 2009 12:56 pm
... the excuisite custom guitars they produce! That's right... I'm talkin' about the not so, "run of the mill" guitars. You know, the ones you don't see every day.

I love the uniqueness of the guitars they build... it could be the paint, wood, limited editions... what have you! I'm a sucker for these, but with good reason Cool

So let's hear it... or see it!

Looked at my vintage guitar calendar today and read the following:

Dean guitars was founded today in 1977 by luthier Dean Zelinsky. His innovative designs featured pointy guitar bodies and large V shaped headstocks. The radical looks and improved tone and sustain made these guitars very popular.

just wanted to post this up for anybody looking for strap locks. i saw these at a local guiar shop about a year or so ago and they were selling for about $2-3 for a set. so i decided to give them a shot. when i got my sledgehammer i decided that instead of drilling holes in it to put the regular strap locks i use on there, i'm going to try these out on there. i've gigged for a little under a year with my sledgehammer and these strap locks, and i've never once had a problem with them! VERY easy to use and there's no tools required! just slap these on right over your strap and there you go! i'm not affiliated with the makers of these at all. i just figured with the way the economy is these days, any way to save money should be taken advantage of.

Good trade?
by maiden03 on Mon Oct 19, 2009 6:03 am
So im sorta new to this forum, not new to guitar though.

Anyway, i have a Dean Razorback 255 Dimeslime, but i always wanted the MKH (Matt Heafy sig). I could never afford it though.

So a guitar shop near me lowered the price down cause they dont want Deans in stock anymore, so there selling them cheapish.

Would trading in my Razorback and using the money for the Heafy be a good idea? I imagine i wouldnt have to pay much extra if i do have to pay more for it.

Also i put a Original Floyd Rose in to replace the horrible licenced one it came with, will the shop still take it if its been customized? If so, will i get more for the guitar? If not ill just put the licenced back in and sell the OFR.

One more thing, will i get a decent price for it, its perfect condition, or do those places sorta rip you off with that sorta thing?

Any other advice?

Thanks, Nay

EDIT: Would eBay be a good option for buying the MKH, and selling my Razorback.

Im aware MKH are made anymore, i know a few places that still have one though.

Garage Band for Mac
by -JiMi DRiX- on Mon Oct 19, 2009 7:11 am
Its on my Mac, I know its probably not the best, and far from "great", but hey, it was free!
I'd like to start using it at home to track down guitar and bass ideas, and be able to burn them and pass them around the band since we cant always get everyone together at the same time. Can anyone give me some tips or advice to get the most out of this program? I had recorded a bass riff just using the mic in the laptop once, and it actually came out great. But I havent figured much out, and have yet to experiment with the program yet. It seems fairly simple, but if anyone here has used it already, chime in and help me out!

"DRiXRiff1" is what i recorded using the laptop speaker, I just set the amp volume at the right level..

Jackson RR24 - anyone have one?

So i've been gassing for an Alexi, thinking i'd finally go ESP for once - but after seeing the prices, I decided it wasn't the best move. I did some research and came to the RR24 - basically the same axe, and i've never owned a Jackson. The compound radius sounds really cool, too.

Has anyone ever played one, or owned one? I'm looking for mainly info on the neck.

Dethklok/Mastodon/High on Fire/ Converge.

HoF was awesome. they opened.

Converge came next and they blew the dog winkie. its like every song was a tribute to the beginning of "Down with the sickness" and the frakin monkey vocals " OOOOHHHHHH WAH AH AH AH!!!" the band was pretty good but the singer just ruined it for right and true.

Mastodon blew my mind. the backdrop had a bunch of wicked trippy stuff going on and that was fun to watch. im not so fond of their recorded tracks, but i will totally see them again live. also, is every song they do like 30 minutes long? holy hell.

Dethklok was fun as hell. i found the pit and started destroying little kids. they were all being huge wussies shoulder checking eachother and walking around. so i walked right in there and just started running in to everybody just to get them moving. and it worked!

if you have dethalbum two with the dvd then you have the setlist in the exact order it was played. the only thing different was the scene in the beginning with jack black from Brutal Legend as a roadie for Dethklok.

they also had a few xboxes set up in the downstairs area to play a demo of Brutal Legend and while i was at it i noticed that people were coming and going freely from the other show that was on.

Sonata Arctica! so i dropped the game and ran in there right as they started Full Moon. so i stayed down there till converge was over and went back up for the rest of the show.

anyway. today, everything hurts. my legs from the pit, my back, my neck from some serious headbangin, voice is gone. and my balls are kinda sore cause a kid in the pit fell over and headbutted my sack......yes.......very painful.

but all in all well worth it. if this show comes to your town DO NOT MISS IT!

Tuner knobs on a lefty Dean Edge 1
by BeatyMcCloud on Mon Oct 19, 2009 6:03 pm
In the spring I picked up a lefty Dean Edge 1 (4 string) as my first bass. I'm trying to figure out what the 3 tuner knobs actually control and was wondering if anyone knew. There was another post that said they were for front & back pickup volume and then tone, but this doesn't seem to be the case when I was playing around with them.

There was no info with the guitar, and I couldn't find anything on Dean's site, except a link to my bass:

http://www.deanguitars.com/edge_1_lefty.htm

Can someone please explain which ones do what, or point me to a link that does.

Thanks in advance!

I wanted to do a few passes with the AxeFx on different guitars. I'm trying to get some sounds nailed down for my EP, and some of the s#%t has a more rocknroll vibe.

The first several bars are a Dimarzio D sonic, and when the chorus kicks in It changes to a Duncan Blackout. I think both tones are good in their own right, but i'd like to see what you think is better.

Polyrhythms - Five notes that whirl the beat
by JonasTamas on Mon Oct 19, 2009 10:08 pm
Image

Click here to download the mp3:
http://www.4shared.com/file/142033019/e599f75b/Polyrhythms_-_Five_notes_that_whirl_the_beat.html

In today's riff we are going to use only 5 notes, but as you will see, these recurring notes can have a spectacular effect.

The first 3 notes are F – A – C (which is an F major triad), and the last 2 notes are E and its octave.

If you play these 5-note-sequence continuously in sixteenth, the starting points of the recurring sequence and the four beats of the 4-4 measure will not coincide.

Let's see this process in the first 2 measures! At the beginning of the first measure, the starting point of our sequence falls on the first beat. A 4-4 measure consists of 16 sixteenths, grouped in four sixteenths. So the second beat comes at the 5. sixteenth of the measure, which is in this case the last note of the sequence (F – A – C – E – B).

As a consequence, the second starting point (i.e. the moment as you start playing these 5 notes for the second time) falls on an upbeat. This point is marked with a '2' on the tablature, between the TAB and the standard notation.

As you finish the sequence for the second time, you will now have a "bonus" of 2 sixteenth notes, because you have played 10 notes so far, being 2 notes ahead the conventional spacing of groups of four. After the third time you will be 3 notes ahead the beat, after the fourth time 4 notes ahead, and so on.

When you sum it up, the 5-note sequence can be played six times in the first 2 measures. This gives 30 notes, so we have only 2 notes left till the end of the second measure (2 measures in 4-4 consist of 32 sixteenth). In this example we utilize this 2 more remaining notes by extending the last E note by an additional sixteenth, as well as by putting a final sixteenth rest at the very end.

(Note that if we had a more conventional theme consisting of 4 notes, we could have played it 8 times!)

So using this method of repeating odd numbers of notes as a theme, we can easily lend color to our riffs, because of the constant 'whirling' of beats and theme starting points. You will no doubt hear this effect when you listen to the sample. Having five simple notes (a major triad and an octave interval), you would be normally no Grammy-candidate, but you will surely have some chances if you mix the beats up according to the above cheap rhythm trick!

In the following 2 measures I have repeated the entire process, but this time I used the note H instead of E as the last note of the 5-note-theme (F – A – C – E – B). And in bars 5-8, the whirling and tilting occurs an octave lower, so we have put together a whole section of a song, which is 8 measures long, and the listener can at no point foresee, what happens next:)

Feel free to add comments, questions!

Keep on rockin'

Dean From Hell CFH w/ Balckouts!

I bought a Dean Form Hell CFH from Guitar Center about 2 months ago. Then I saw someone put Seymour Duncan Blackouts in an MAB1 Armorflame. I said, "Let me do that with my Dean From Hell CFH" :-X
So today I picked up the guitar back from Guitar Center. The guy who did the swap chipped some paint off the body. However, I plugged it into my Marshall 30W amp, and started to play. The best I can describe the sound is... ORGASMIC!!! It was friggin' awesome, though the output of the new p-ups was so high that when I hit some heavy power chords I'd get a little crackle from my amp. Also with the gain from the DF-7 I can hit Dimebag harmonics with the neck p-up. I am stunned. Once I get an interface I'll load up something on youtube, I'm sure you'd all enjoy it.

All I can say is WOW! This guitar is amazing! I looked it over and over and over - there is not one flaw/blemish to be found. I never knew an import could be this nice. I thought my Moser was nice, this thing is even nicer than that was. I am very happy with my purchase. The guitar balances very well and is very sleek and clean. The attention to detail on this is insane - no sloppy finish/binding line, the control cavities are very neat and clean as well. I cannot find one single thing wrong - at all. I either usually notice things right away or after a week or so of having the guitar. I really don't think I am gonna find anything here. The case is really nice too. The guitar came w/ a Rico t-shirt, a certificate - signed/dated by Rico himself & the tools are in a cool little draw string bag with the Rico logo on it - similar to a sunglasses bag or something you'd put a weed pipe in. The guitar feels high quality as well. Ya know how you can sometimes feel that a guitar is cheap the second you pick it up? Not here! The frets, board and inlays are all done very well also. I cannot say enough good things about this guitar. Overall, this has a very clean/sleek look and feel to it. The only "weird" thing is the head on the Imperial tuners. They will take some getting used to, but not a big deal at all. Currently has EMG 81/60 in it, but am gonna replace those w/ SD Blackouts. I really like the neckjoint contour - very cool the way its done. The neck has a nice C to D shape to it. If you have ever considered getting one of these - now is the time to do it! Not only are the guitars awesome, so is the price & Rico is great to deal with. He will for sure get future business from me! Onto the PRON!!!!

Well I've narrowed it down to 4.... Maybe 5
by classic_rocker978 on Wed Oct 21, 2009 1:07 am
Well I've narrowed my search down.. after trying several Dimarzios I think I'm finally getting closer...

I've had.. an Evo2.. D activator and Breed.

Out of those I like the breed most. It's a bit honky? With my setup. Had to drop the mids. Then it was pretty good.

This is a mahogany guitar... (Schecter c-1 Artist) I removed the tone pot and used a 250k pot for volume. So the 250k volume kind of attenuates the highs since I removed the tone pot.

Well its still a tad brighter than I'd like it to be. It's close and I may end up coming back to this pickup after trying several more... who knows. Heres what I'm currently considering though:

Super Distortion
Super 3 (Maybe too modern for me?)
Tone Zone (Maybe too modern for me?
AT-1
Maybe - Air Zone? ( Vintage Version of Tone Zone )

Thats down to... 4 maybe 5

I suck at choosing pickups lol...

I play a lot of classic rock and old school metal, my distortion is usually set at a Van Halen level. Soo in other words just enough gain to let those harmonics squeal!

So if you guys would be kind enough to help me out here and tell me the advantages to each of these pickups. Even though my guitar is mahogany I'm doubting I'll have any trouble with muddyness. My setup includes a Crate V30 (Modeled after a Plexi) and a 4x12 of G12h30's and G12m's... I run a 6 band EQ up front to tighten everything up and boost the mids some.

i took my new guitar (esp ltd m-1000, floyded) to sam ash today to get it set up. When i got it back, i found out it cost $130. The factory set up was quite poor. When i got the guitar back, the intonnation was good, but the action was good and low on the first few frets, but on the higher frets (beyond 12th), the action was the same as when my dad dropped it off at sam ash- nearly 5mm Rolling Eyes my POS epiphones still play better on it! Schecter Blackjack ATX C-7 (Finish Issue)
by dan_plus_o on Wed Oct 21, 2009 5:19 am
Hey guys! So my new Schecter Blackjack ATX C-7 came in the other day! It is the black satin finish one.

Anyways the first thing I noticed is on the back of the neck there is a spot that is like it has been rubbed down and it is all glossy. Upon playing it I could noticeably feel the area where it was glossy every time I slid my hand over the spot.

So I left the guitar at the store and they contacted Schecter. Schecter apparently said this was a common problem and to just sand it down with some steel wool. I don't see how this could be a common issue with brand new guitars?!?!?! So anyways. The guitar tech at my local music store did some work on it and I am going in tomorrow to check it out.

My main concern is that the spot will be more prone to return to the way it was originally. I just feel very uncomfortable about the whole situation and thought I would turn here for some advice.

This guitar is still an Import but it is the most expensive import I have bought so I am a little bummed about this issue.

Will steel wool do the trick or should I demand a new one? Again I have not looked at it since they worked on it so I have no idea what it is like now. I just wanted to get some opinions before I went in there tomorrow. Has anyone else heard of this problem with their satin finish guitars?? I was pretty shocked when I was told that schecter said it was not uncommon.

Ahab's Newest Album
by Hot Sauce on Wed Oct 21, 2009 2:15 pm
A lot of you probably don't know these guys, (and a lof you probably wouldn't care to), but I love them. They released their second offering, 'The Divinity of Oceans,' back in July, but I just now figured that i'd make a thread about it. It's atmospheric, melodic 'funeral' doom, with 'cookie monster (and some clean) vocals.' But that doesn't make it a bad thing. Their first album, 'The Call of the Wrteched Sea,' which was heavily inspired by Moby Dick, had some of the most haunting and emotional moments that i've ever heard. That's why I love the band so much.

Just listen to the clips for 'Redemption Lost,' 'Gnawing Bones (Coffin's Lot), and Nickerson's Theme:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Divinity-Of-Oceans/dp/B002GHFHG2

And while you're hear, and if you enjoyed that, here is a band that SHOULD be heard more:

"Fun bidders are pursued juridically!"
Lost complete commitment to the music. What next?
by Body_Snatcher on Wed Oct 21, 2009 10:16 pm
So I've come to a bit of a crossroads in life. I say life because music's been my life so far for the last few years.

When I pick up the guitar or listen to music I see myself doing this forever even if it's a case of just writing and recording for the rest of my time until I can do it no more.

However I've come to a point where I just don't want to do the band thing anymore. Starting this band was one of the brightest times ever. Thinking of playing shows in front of people who'd listen to the music and dig it was all I ever wanted.

But then once the band actually started, cracks started appearing in this brilliant crystal ball I'd seen in front of me. Playing gigs where there's not many people to lineup changes to arguing with band members over where to rehearse just doesn't seem like the side of things I want anymore.

I've completely lost the positive energy I had in regards to doing this and it's come off the back of playing our first gig with the new guitarist, albeit in front of 6 people and recording some pretty cool songs.

I'm tempted from my side to carry on and play and say nothing, but I feel like I won't do it justice and I'll just end up leaving the band on a really bad note a few months down the line. Even though I'm the only founding member left, I feel like it's not my baby anymore, and moreso, I don't want it to be. Don't wanna take care of it even.

From making decisions for the good of the band in terms of recording/rehearsing which never end up receiving any support and then me just wondering what the hell's going on to the band just seeming to be going down a dead end, I don't want to do it anymore. I've felt like this twice before, once when I was going through some issues personally and the other when our drummer went mental on us.

Neither of that is the case this time.

I'm torn between telling the guys in the band after our gig this Sunday, and play out the remaining 5 gigs of the year and then pack it in. And there's no one really I can talk to about this.

What would Dean Guitars do?

Active Pickups. Need help deciding.
by Spite on Wed Oct 21, 2009 11:31 pm
Next purchase for me is a pair of active pickups.
Now, people mostly tell me that the Blackouts are better than EMGs in every way, and Im also fairly convinced about that at this point, hearing demos and whatnot.
I've only ever played a guitar with a set of EMGs, and no local dealers have Blackouts in any guitars. When I played the EMGs, I loved it. Somehow the 81 is a very sinister sounding pickup. Very mean sounding, which I like, and I just cant get out of my SH-6 and Dimebucker the same way.
Does the Blackouts have that same type of mean sound?
The demos I saw were missing that sound entierly, both on the SDs and EMGs.
Im sorry if this has been posted before, but I didnt really know what to type in the searchfield for this.

Needing recommendation of a fixed bridge.
by Andro on Thu Oct 22, 2009 3:11 pm
I'll likely be able to order my first custom guitar. I'd love it to be a Dean, but they likely won't do what I'm after (RR shape with reverse ponty headstock) and since I'm in europe I'll likely go for a european CS to avoid ludicrous shipping and taxes on a high cost item. (If someone can prove me wrong, please do Wink )

Therefore...I'm after a high quality fixed bridge. Availability in tarnished copper would be a bonus.
It has to be the lowest possible, so the strings are very near the guitar table. Think Fender or Ibanez basic bridges height, but I'm open to some sophistication. (Else I'd just jack a Fender bridge, duh). Definitily no tune o matic like stuff.

I've looked on Kahler and schaller stuff, if some of you have good experience with some of those bridge express yourself. Smile
Price isn't really a problem except if you go on suggesting diamond incrusted gold bridges.
Ultimate passive pick up for down tuning!!!
by bassmantim71 on Thu Oct 22, 2009 5:42 pm
Yes, it's true Shocked

The lower I tune with my new Bare Knuckles Warpig in the bridge, the better the mofo sounds!!! I was dying to try this pup after reading all of the reviews..., apparently they were trying to custom wind a passive pup to emulate the Zakk Wylde EMG's. Whether that is true or not, this pup kicks ass!!!

With an average rating of 22k ohms in the bridge and 17.5 k ohms in the neck (I only have the bridge) I gotta say this thang kicks arse:

http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/ZH-warpig.html

My next move will be some heavy gauge strings for my USA HT. But right now, with a set of 9-46 DR's, the lower I tune, the better this thing sounds. It remains surprisingly clear on the clean channel, cleans up when you back off the volume, but royally kicks major ass when cranked to 10, down tuned, and played on the gain channel.

Timmy is impressed Shocked

Stupid DAW question.
by Andro on Thu Oct 22, 2009 11:58 pm
Ok I know this is gonna sound noobish, but last time I recorded anything seriously was on a Yamaha MT8X, I'm new into the DIY DAW stuff.

I'm basically using a [music stuff]--->Sound card--->DAW setup.

So far my [music stuff] has been limited to Line 6 POD farm, and I could hear what I played by recording by running the software once on its own, recording dry and adding the VST afterwards with an identical setting I used with the standalone software.

I have for now a partial rig, and only way I manage to hear myself is by running through...the podfarm tuner.

Is there a way to hear myself playing directly without running it, by feeding the DAW ? (I'm using reaper)

Didn't have any trouble doing it that way until now, trying to use some cab impulse and I'd like to fiddle with the sound without having ot record and then apply the cab.

It's a short term solution, I'm getting a power amp and cab soon© but I enjoy toying with the stuff, just trying to get the most of my engl preamp in between.
Pathetic Gibson guitars...rant..
by hellboundinFTworthTX on Fri Oct 23, 2009 12:31 am
So I was in guitar center the other day and I went over to check out the wall of Gibsons. I've allway wanted a real Les Paul but have never been able to afford one, but I heard they had a couple on sale for under $2k. Well the sale guitars were gone but I was looking at a couple others, one was a honeyburst reissue at over $3k and the other was a new standard "plus" top in desert burst. Neither one of these guitars even had a top worthy of a Dean import. The reissue had a very faint flame that was in a harsh V shape and faded out completely above the neck pickup. The standard plus top HAD ABSOLUTELY NO FLAME ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE GUITAR!!! And the right side only had a little flame to the right of the bridge. That's not what I consider "PLUS". Rolling Eyes These guitars shouldn't even have qualified as B stock IMO. If I EVER buy a USA it will deffinitely be a Dean because I've never seen an import with that horrble of a top, let alone a USA that didn't have a flawless flame/quilt. Guess I'll start saving for a USA Caddy.....sorry I didn't have my phone or I would have taken pics of the turds.

Parametric Eq's (Furman alternative)
by fowl2338 on Sat Oct 24, 2009 12:51 am
Members on the forum have named specific characteristics of the Furmans.

1. They add more gain, as they are a pre-amp along with being a parametric equalizer.

2. They "have an envelope filter sound on them (sound you get when you turn your on a Wah and leave it in one position)"

Would it not be possible to get an alternative Parametric equalizer that has the Envelope Filter characteristic, and make up for the gain with an OD pedal? Idea

Running 2 heads together

In order to run a set up like this (below), with 2 heads running together, where could I get an amp splitter (good one). (Radial Big Shot in pic)

I know J. Yuenger of White Zombie ran Century's and 8100's together using a mesa/boogie splitter, but I can't find one.

Also, with running two 100w heads together, it would therefore make it 200w capable, correct? Would it be ok to run it into my Jaguar compact cabs (2, 2x12)?

by rridner on Sat Oct 24, 2009 2:20 am
Let the Night Roar lies somewhere between the doom of Internal Void, High on Fire and the elder metallic crunch of Celtic Frost/Venom. The Atlanta power trio is fronted by ex Malevoloent Creation/Leviathan guitarist Jeff Juszkiewicz. Fuzz-tones and sonic amplification backed by solid drum smashing, and vocally somewhere between Kurt from D.R.I. and Matt Pike of Sleep/High on Fire. Let the Night Roar cranks up a sonically perfect first release recorded by Jeff Bako, which fans of the afformentioned bands will worship with mind numbing glee.

...so here's a couple crappy Friday night pics of the living room. I have a practice-type room as well, but it's more or less in disarray and the lighting wasn't good enough for pics tonight. I entertain company, now and again, but it's nice being able to let my once-somewhat-understated man cave become, and fill, an entire house. If you guys see anything you'd dig more pics of, I'd be happy to snap some off tomorrow in the daytime!

...and nobody needs to tell me it's cluttered. I know.

last night really blew.

I had to do some roadside Olympics (field sobriety test), because i blew "borderline" on the breathalyzer (even though he never would show me the results), I was nowhere near drunk, i had had two drinks several hours before hand.

here's the kicker:
the reason he pulled me over was for driving slow. which i was doing because my truck spun a rod bearing as i took off from the light and i was trying to nurse it home.

so... pretty awesome night. damn near got arrested and now have to rebuild my engine.

just venting, but moral of the story: don't drink and drive an old truck.

Well I got it open and what did I find? Alpha Pots! The same crap GFS is selling... hmm

First Act = Good tone? I think not...

So why should I pay $5 a Pot at GFS for First act quality electronics?

I have however used their bridges and tuners and they are pretty good for the money Very Happy

Parts give away.
by WyldeDime on Sun Oct 25, 2009 10:26 pm
I have a couple of things to give away here.

Chrome set of 3x3 Grover Tuners.

Chrome set of 3x3 Sperzel tuners.

Matte chrome set Of "Seymour Duncan" Humbuckers. JB/59 set.

The "Seymour Duncan" is in quotes because they are knock-offs out of a USA pro series Z. Dean Advertised them as Seymour Duncans, but when they were pulled, they don't have the SD stamp on them and they are both marked Neck. It wasn't only this guitar as I have seen other Pro-series owners post about this over the years. Anyway, they are in good shape and have plenty of lead.

Couple of conditions here:

1. If I don't like or know you, piss off Laughing
2. 1 per member.
3. Don't bitch, they are free.
4. Sorry, USA and Canada only.
NAD Kustom content
by Lon on Sun Oct 25, 2009 11:24 pm
I've been a Kustom fan for years and really like their newer stuff with the Celestions. I've had a few over the years but have always wanted one of the Quad 100 DFX modelers (100 watts). Checked craigslist about an hour ago and a guy had listed a 2007 MIM Telecaster and that very amp...$400 for both. The amp sells online for $469 by itself (which is why I never owned one before). Needless to say I jumped on it, and the guy was 5 minutes from my house to boot. I'll recoup the money from the Tele and my smaller Fender Champion 30 that I'll toss in. Yay me! Here's an online pic.

Dual EMG 85s
by shupe13 on Mon Oct 26, 2009 12:24 am
I was talking to a guy who does repairs and mods for a small guitar shop a town over from mine. I mentioned that I was wanting to set up my Razorback. I told him I was going with heavier strings and tuned to D. I told him I wasn't set on any particular pickup set yet but I would probably have him do it because I don't solder for s@#t. He suggested dual 85s. Anyone here done that or know anyone who has?
A few pickup misconceptions...
by classic_rocker978 on Mon Oct 26, 2009 1:27 am
Low Output pickups produce a thin tone.

High output pickups produce a fat tone.

---------------------------------------------------

Low output pickups lack harmonics.

High output pickups make harmonics easier.

---------------------------------------------------

Low output pickups sound bad with distortion.

High output pickups sound bad clean.

---------------------------------------------------

High output pickups have a tighter, punchier tone with better clarity.

Low output pickups become muddy with distortion.

---------------------------------------------------

Tapping and legato become easier with a high output pickup.

---------------------------------------------------

High output pickups increase sustain.

---------------------------------------------------

I cant think of anything else off of the top of my head Very Happy

Passive pickup that sounds similar to EMG 81?
by Serbusfish on Mon Oct 26, 2009 1:04 pm
I removed the pickups from my Dean ML a while back because I wanted to replace them with EMG's, but my guitar been sitting in the corner for months on end gathering dust, a set of EMG's is expensive so I figured f**k it I wanna play my guitar again. So im looking for a bridge pickup that is high output that sounds either a lot like an EMG 81 or basically is just good for thrash/death/metalcore/etc. Any suggestions?
Valve Junior is very Harsh?!?! Why?!
by classic_rocker978 on Mon Oct 26, 2009 5:41 pm
Well I pulled my old valve junior out... Threw on my weber mass attenuator, cranked er up and let her roar.

AAhhh my Poor... Poor ears..

They are literally still ringing.... for two reasons.

I forgot how loud that little thing is cranked.. and its so harsh!

Its all stock... I tried running an EQ pedal in front of it to smooth things out to no avail.

I had it running through a cabinet with g12h30 and g12m speakers. Tried it with just the G12m... Not as harsh but a much thinner tone.

This was with my schecter with breed (B) and jazz (N) pickups...

Why is the midrange (Upper midrange?) on my valve junior so ear piercingly painful. It sounds awesome until you crank it into saturation then it breaks up in a very unmusical way. Itll sound great if I stand off to the side of it, head on though? I dont think so.

I really do think I did manage some hearing loss too Rolling Eyes
Finish on New Dean USAs? Nito or Poly? Yay or Nay?

Awesome SS Amps!
by classic_rocker978 on Tue Oct 27, 2009 3:27 am
I've been surfing around youtube a bit lately checking out some different amps and pickups.

I've really been surprised about how I cannot tell the difference between some of the solid state and tube amps.

The only thing I can clearly identify a tube amp by is that classic verge of breakup crunchy warmth.

I can usually identify a SS amp if it is sterile/lacking warmth.

There are a bunch of middle ground tones that sound stellar though. I can honestly say im a tube snob and cant tell the difference many times until I read the description.

So what are your favorite SS amps, for metal.. cleans.. classic rock..

Preferably nothing overly sterile/lifeless/cold.

Just saw Third Eye Blind tonight!!!
by GuitarGoat on Tue Oct 27, 2009 6:10 am
As the title says I just saw Third Eye Blind! The opening band was garbage but let me tell you, TEB delivers. Possibly my favorite band, so maybe I'm biased but they just were flawless with plenty of energy but not over the top. The lead guitarist was playing Bogners and I think the singer was playing Voxs. Could have been some combination of each though. There was a sweet drum solo in the middle of Graduate which was off the hook. I wasn't expecting a drum solo at a Third Eye Blind concert. The lead guitarist also did an acoustic fingerpicking solo sorta thing. The lead singer was playing a few Explorers while the lead guitarist played Strats, an ES-335 I think, and some Les Pauls. If you guys have the chance to see them, do it! Awesome band!
BTMN Guitar Of The Week Take 2....
by BTMN on Tue Oct 27, 2009 2:17 pm
This week I've got a '96 Hamer T51 as my BTMN's GOTW.

I recently traded bodies with a Minneapolis Hamer Fan Club guy. He had the Natural body and I had a Mary Kay finished one. Mine had a Tortoise pickguard on it and I might get one for this one too, as it was, we also swapped guards. The Black guard really is the one to go on a Natural body huh?

I love the classic look. The Swamp Ash body is two piece and is well matched as Hamer would. The MK body was a three piece but was equally matched up and the grain showed through on that one nicely.

We kept electronics, hardware, and necks in the swap. My T51 had had a bridge replacement prior to arrival here in 2003 or so. Wilkinson to Fender. It had also had the stock issued Duncan removed, but included in the deal, from the bridge slot and replaced with a Dimarzio Chopper double rail. Nice pickup with a lot of differant sounds dialed from it. The neck pickup is the stock issue Duncan and the exact model escapes me at present.

On to the Guitar Pron huh???

the DJ tagged the back of my jumpsuit later with the hed pe emblem which i thought was cool.

was an awesome show, awesome stage set and at the end J brought his kid out and the crowd went nuts cause he had clown paint on, then J lifted him up and the kid sprayed a faygo bottle and everybody went apeshit. the kid looked psyched, hes only 5 i think. it was fun.

then i went to the bowling alley/bar/venue my girlfriend works at to watch Photograph. they are a local cover band with one of the best guitarists in the area. the were playing "Crying in the rain" when i came in and they did some Crue, some GNR, Poison, and a few others i dont recall. they had already finished their Def leppard set.

http://www.photographrocks.com/PG_Pages/MAIN_TEMPLATE_.htm

sunday night i went to Club Anything where Voltaire was playing. another awesome show. no band this time but his opener The Hellblinki Sextet backed him up on a couple songs.

i was blown away by Hellblinki. the chick has an awesome voice, the guitarist had a kickdrum and snare set up on foot pedals and was playing some sort of partial hollow electric guitar, couldnt see the brand, and the bass player was rockin it.

Twas a good day today. My Randall RH150G3+ came in and the new BTBAM album is out. And both kick a ton of ass. As my 8100 grows older I decided to purchase a backup amp. I figure this is a good idea because my band plays out constantly and having a backup makes me a bit more confortable. After hours of searching for the tone i was looking for I decided I liked this amp a bit more than to be just a backup. I still like my 8100 more but both will def see a lot of use. Pron will come soon. Also for those that have tossed this amp to the side because you think its too bassy. Ur below 70 IQ type and need to learn how to eq an amp. I read to many reviews about this.
