Rust problem =\
by CJRebel on Sun Nov 01, 2009 5:18 pm
It seems every set of strings i get, become rusty within a week or so. I just dont understand it, the strings arent cheap, theyre ernie ball slinkies, dont remember the gauge but i doubt that has anything to do with it. I clean my guitar down with a cloth every time i put it down, and my room isnt particularly humid, i always keep it in the dean hardcase anyway. Think thats strange? well, it gets worse, i just spent a week in denmark with a friend of mine, nd played his guitar all week, and there wasnt one spec of rust on the strings. I though perhaps i had some kind of freaky acid sweat but that doesnt seem to be the case either. Any ideas?
what do these sound like can you get a heavy tone,or even a metal tone.or is it mor vintage classic rockish.give me some input.

This might just be the dumbest question ever (EMG help)
by fluffelz on Sun Nov 01, 2009 11:47 pm
I have an epiphone sg g-310 that has an emg 81 in the bridge and an 85 in the neck. i know that with the quick connect cable installed into the guitar, i can do a solderless pup swap, but i dont know where to start. i want to put the 85 in the bridge and the 81 in the neck.
are they better than the cases that come with the import guitars? I need a good road worthy case, (can't afford to have a custom road case made for a razor V) and the case that came with my guitar is really...bad. Do the USA cases hold up better? If so where is the best place to get one. If not what is a good sturdy case for a Razor V?
What are some fun, easy slide songs?

I just picked up my first slide today, and wanna start learning some slide stuff. Any reccomendations?
and tab out as much of any of the songs from this band as you want, I'm pretty sure all the songs are in Drop D. I need to know these songs really soon and I can't get to a guitar to work them through.

Hardcase fail?
by CJRebel on Mon Nov 02, 2009 3:41 am
I carry my Razorback to and from college in its hardcase, and end up with aching arms and blisters on my hands due to the uncomfortable hard plastic handle and the rediculous ammount of weight on it. Anyway, im lookin for a gig bag big enough to handle a razorback, i really dont wanna order from the internet. Im in the NE of the UK. Anybody know of a place where i can get my hands on one? would REALLY appreciate it.

yes! i got a new guitar today! a Soltero in cherry for a early birthday present from my mom. it sounds amazing! the pickups are
perfect and neck is really comfy. my dad bought me my first real deal guitar (my ML) and my first amp (Rev Jr) last year.
i very thankful for what my mom does for me. my dad seemed unmoved (not even a smile) when i took the guitar out of
the box. after the age of about 10 or so, the relation ship with my dad really fell apart. we'll talk every few days but its nothing
extensive. i left today to pickup a strap and some new strings and when i got home, my brother was home too and i walked into
my room to find him playing it. i said, "cool huh?" and he immediately put the guitar down and walks out while saying "i'm
leaving". no smile, no whats up, no hey dude. i used to be the kind of kid who would bitch and moan about something and cry
and kick untill i got it. i'm not like that anymore and feel terrible about how i used to act. my mom asked what i wanted, i
replyed "that guitar right there" and she bought it about a week later (being today). if they want to have a bug up their butt about
it, then so be it. i would take pictures of it with my brothers phone but he would take it personal.
i'm a momma's boy
maybe pron in the future
edit: i've noticed that its the standard but it doesnt have push/pull pots or those cool locking strap buttons.
edit for pron:
photobucket really degrades the quality
sorry for so many pictures, i tried to ballance the guitar in one hand and trying to take pictures with the other. the body looks to be make of one
piece, not counting the top. the tape is wraped around the strings between the tail piece and the brigde to shu t the strings up. the
inlays look great but i did notice quite a bit of filler though. the best i've ever played
Need a USB audio interface for Revalver MKiii
Well I'm getting rdy to record a new cd and I'm not gona mess with any mics or anything.. I've always tried to embrace technology and this time my CD will be produced completely digital... I love the tones im getting out of revalver MKIII and everyone tells me a USB audio interface would only help my tone..
I want it to be able to handle my guitar and mic... I think I need a Hi-Z input for guitar?
Does the audio interface make a huge difference when going DI and using a program like revalver/guitar rig/amplitube?
Which audio interface would you recommend for a price range about $100?
All you EMG Lovers... Tell me why I should Go Active.
Well I *Think* I'm getting rdy to take the plunge and go active.
I'm getn rdy to record and I think I may like EMG's. After all of these years ive always passed them off as sterile/lifeless without ever trying them... and thats not very fair.
The deal is, I do a lot of Classic Rock songs. Like a lot of old clapton stuff.. Cream.. Some Santana.. Can the EMG's do this as well? I was going to go 85x/60A because these are kind of paf'ish. No single frequency group is boosted or cut. A friend told me the volume knob on an emg equipped axe acts more as a gain control. The tone stays the same as you roll down the knob but the gain goes down. Passives dont do this as well, you lose treble as you drop the volume.
Is the volume knob on an EMG equipped Axe really like a gain knob?
Can an EMG (85x/60A) do some older classic rock stuff?
How do they clean up.
This next question is ONLY for people who own/have tried EMGs.
Do you feel as if Active Emg's are Sterile, lifeless and cold in anyway or do you feel as if you lose dynamics? I'm used to a heavy, warm crunchy tone. Even when doing metal I like a warmer tone.
Please be mature guys... I know this thread is asking for war. Kind of like which l500xl did Dime use (R.I.P. Brother). But we are adults (Most of us) so lets behave as such and please go into detail why you feel EMGs are/are not sterile etc. when compared to a passive pickup.

Making my own effects pedals
After thinking about it for a very long time, I have embarked on a journey that may be more habit forming than collecting Dean guitars. I have decided to make my own effects pedals. I am very good with a soldering iron, and know a bit about electronics. But I have never tried to do anything with components this small before... at least not since high school electronics lab. Which was 25 years ago or more.
I did lots of research on the subject, and eventually decided to start with a few kit builds, escalating the difficulty at each step. For those of you that dont know about the pedal kits, they range in difficulty greatly. But what they do provide is a few conveniences to help the beginner builder on their way. First and most important, the kits usually includes a PCB (printed circuit board) that is pre-traced, and has little outlines and labels for each component. That is really the only part of the "kit" that elevates the pedal project above building one from scratch. Everything else about the kit is "parts" related. In other words, they get all the resistors, caps, diods, IC's, pots, jacks, switches, etc, and puts them in a bag. Its no different than having you go out and source all those parts and gather them up yourself. So the PCB is the only thing that gives the beginner builder a huge helping hand in this case. The rest is simply the convenience of buying a kit, and not having to source all of the parts yourself.
After looking at all the companies offering these kits, I went with BYOC. They have best selection of kits, and have the best reviews as far as component quality, pcb layouts, and instructions. So far I have been very pleased. They also have a very active DIY Pedal forum, similar to this Dean forum, and the many IT related forums I frequent. Which is a big plus for me, since I am used to getting support and assistance via forum already.
I got five kits from BYOC. First time customers can order a free kit call the Confidence Boost. This was kit # 1 out of 5. It is a nice clean booster circuit. The free kit comes with all the parts and instructions to make a working pedal... but does not come with an enclosure, switch, or DC power port. And it comes with a micro trim pot for the boost level, instead of a full size pot. I took my time, assembled the confidence boost, and gave it a shot. Sounded awesome. So much so, that I scoured the BYOC forum for all the mods, and ordered all the parts to make it a fully functional booster pedal. Still waiting for all that to arrive. The boost was healthy, the tone was good, and the circuit was really quiet. There are lots of people on the forums that have trouble completing even the booster kit... so I felt very good when I got it right on the first shot.
I will be putting together a blog for each of my pedal builds, with full pronz from each step. So stay tuned for that.
Second was BYOC's 250+ kit. This is a fairly simple kit, with a low parts count. So it is a good place to start after the Confidence Boost is completed. The 250+ can be built to either vintage MXR Distortion+ specs, or the grey cased DOD script logo OD-250 specs. Since I am a huge fan of the OD-250 already, I went that route.
Again, I took my time, assembled the components to the board, and got the whole thing wired up and installed in the chasis. It took quite a few hours to get it done... but it was quite fun as well. When I had it all working, I plugged it into my Valve Jr, picked up a Caddy, and give it a whirl. Sounded awesome. It had a much more warm and round tone than my reissue OD-250 pedals. It had comparable volume levels, but not as much gain... which is to be expected from the vintage circuit design. So I immediately started modding the pedal... looking for more creamy overdrive, etc. The BYOC forum is full of mods and suggested tinkering for all their pedals. plus lot of info on building pedals from scratch. So therefore, I have already changed out the clipping diodes a couple of times, and have been changing out resistor values. It is amazing how you can tailor the sound of a pedal with a few minor changes.
So now I am off into the whole project of dressing up the pedal a bit. Making graphics and labels. Do I paint it? Do I use waterslide decals? Print out graphics on sticker stock? Lots of things to investigate.
After I get the first two pedals done, I have three more to go. And they should get more interesting as the complexity increases. I have a few really cool pedals coming up. Once I complete the series of 5 BYOC pedals, I will decide if I want to continue with the kits, or start building pedals from scratch. I can post pronz and links to my web logs when they are ready... that is if anyone cares. Sorry for the long winded post. I thought I would share my new found addiction with the rest of you!
ok folks. tell me about your Wah's. (my buddy needs help)
he wants to buy a Wah pedal and i thought id shoot some questions in the right direction.
what do you use?
do you feel it is superior over other brands? and why?
do you know if there is a difference between a regular Crybaby and the CFH Crybaby ( other than the camo). and what about the Zakk Wylde Crybaby? are any of those models noticably different in one way or another?
finally , do any of you own an Ernie Ball Wah?
my buddy was told by a local shop that the ernie ball wah is the only one set up with a sort of pulley system so that there is a gradual on/off as opposed to the Crybaby which is wither on or of with no gradual switch between the two.
is our understanding of how those things work correct? does it matter?
my buddy also said while playing a crybaby it just didnt seem to affect the sound very much, and i have noticed the same on my girlfriends pedal. are we doing something wrong?
any answers would be a great help.
Interesting question:
by CJRebel on Mon Nov 02, 2009 6:20 pm
Me and my dad have been arguing so to speak, about wether or not the material that an electric guitar is made of effects the sound or tone that you get out of it. Im not really sure of the right answer, although im arguing that it does. He says that you can make an electric guitar out of anything, so long as it has pickups. So, anybody know whos right? Does the material of an electric guitar effect the tone? Be it plastic, wood, carbon fibre, or even metal =P anything
Really considering a Dean Hartail select but unfortunately, no shops around my area stock them.I dont really want to buy one without having a go, but some neck dimensions would help me imagine how the guitar would feel.
I couldn't find any specifics on the dimensions of the neck on this site, so wondered if anyone from Dean or on this forum could help me out.
I've heard rave reviews on them so im not doubting the quality, I just want to ensure I'd love playing the guitar as much as I'd love looking at it.
If it helps, my current guitar is a Cort kx-1. Its pretty budget i guess, but i absolutely love the neck feel. So I want to make sure my Dean upgrade pleases me as much.
Many thanks,
Miki

Kahler vs Floyd (non floater)
I have a Gunslinger with floating OFR, and although I really enjoy the guitar, I will probably never buy a floater again, as I just don't have the patience to mess with it/set it up all the time...too many nuances.
So, for my upcoming build, I am contemplating either a Kahler Hybrid 7300 or a Flush-mounted, non-floating Gotoh Floyd.
I like to experiment with different tunings. Is it possible to detune the Kahler without having to re-"set up up" ?
I realize I will not be able to pull up the Floyd, but that's definitely a sacrifice I would be willing to make. (and if a string breaks, the whole thing won't go out of tune...yay!)
What are your thoughts on this, Kahler experts?

So, today, I was messing around with my floyded guitar. I dive the whammy and on the way up SHERBANG!!!! two of the three floyd springs snap and go flying out of the guitar. The springs were relatively new, I have only had the guitar for a few months, and nothing was rusted or corroded. Has anyone heard of this hapening and what can I do to stop it from happening again, if there is a way?
Where Did all the RG100 Es Go?
used to see em ebay all the time... now i havent seen one on ebay for several months.
Tom loses his mind and buys another guitar!
I know I said I'd never buy another guitar, but I've been gassing for a new, natural wood guitar, preferably a single cut with no neck heel. I found an 'inexpensive' one on ebay that I just had to gamble on, a Raven West guitar. It's got a nato based neck-thru with real mahogany wings that are topped with a real 1/4" spalted maple top. The fretboard is real Macassar (?) ebony, and the inlays (1 neck, 2 headstock) are real abalone. If it sucks, I can send it back (3 days). If the pups suck, I've already found a set of mini-buckers. The pics are from the auction and will probably go away soon, but will be replaced by my pics, after the guitar arrives. (assuming that I don't send it right back!)
I'm not much into Teles, but this one is neck-thru, and the part of Teles that I don't like is the HORRIBLE bolt-on neck heel. If the frets are good, this one may be a keeper, especially after I install some good mini-humbuckers and disable the pots (I never mess with the volume or tone).
Anyone with personal experience with Raven West guitars feel free to jump in with comments. I know it looks good, but it could be a real POS. All of the ebay feedback for them is very positive.

B7 tapped arpeggio with string skipping
This time I show you an easy & quick way to play a dominant 7th arpeggio. Click here to download the bigger version of the tablature and the mp3:
http://www.4shared.com/file/146042115/133e4e21/B7_tapped_arpeggio_with_string_skipping.html
On the A string, use your left hand 1st finger on fret 12, while the right hand's index or middle finger plays fret 16 then pulls off back to fret 12..
Then play the same pattern on strings D, B, and high E, except for using the 2nd and 3rd finger of the right hand, respectively, on the D and the high E string.
In this example it is a B dominant 7th arpeggio, but of course you can play it on any part of the neck, or reorganize the pattern to get a major 7th arpeggio etc. Feel free to experiment!
I prefer using the middle finger when played tapped sequences unless of course it is a 3- or 4-finger version of tapping, but many players use their index finger so it is up to you what feels the best.
The tricky part is always the transition to one string to another. Try to avoid unwanted string noises by synchronizing your movement. Practice it very slow first, then you'll be able to bring it up to warp speeds.
Good luck, don't forget to visit http://jonastamas.com - and spread the word if you like the songs on my website.
Keep on rockin'
i have ordered a all tube head, be kinda my first, i had a krank andsent it back. so this is my first one to have and to hold lol.
so what do i need to know, all i know is turn power on let it warm up, then take take standby off. and to match impedienence between head and cab.and powering off reverse of powering on.
so thats all i know,i am sure there is more to know.if you have sites, info, please post thanks
John.
would it be possible to custom order a DMT pickup? im just curious.
when its time to change my tubes before its too late???
Does anyone know what material these complex devices are made of?? Aluminum, Steel, Kryptonite?? Im thinking of doing some custom things and i must know!!!
Basically what the title says i will post mine when i get my camera back.
maybe they will listen to us this time?
just curious as to what we, the dean guitar forum members
have been begging dean to make for NAMM for the last few years?
-a 24 fret ml
-a 24 fret V(and if i remember correctly, mustaine said he will release a vintage V with curvy horns and 24 frets with dean a while back...)
-maple fret boards
-ebony fret boards
these are the things that they have listened to us with:
-original floyd rose
-better pickups
-better quality control
i'd like to see a 24 fret hard tail! and/or a maple fret board, 24 fret hard tail! as in import though

Alterbridge Live in Amsterdam
Hey,
Just got the new live Alterbridge dvd and it smokes. Great show, and Myles Kennedy not only sings great, he wails on guitar. Way more trading licks with Tremonti than I thought. Great show and these guys are tight, I understand the money those guys got for the creed reunion, but why are they wasting their time with stapp. Saw creed show over the summer, was decent, stapp forgot alot of his own vocals and you could see Tremonti laugh at him repeatedly. Anyway I highly recommend this dvd, you can only get it on amazon for now. Apparently the creed management is blocking the full release of this dvd as to not disturb sales of their new cd and dvd coming out around christmas

Strat gurus help/option needed...
by Trashed on Wed Nov 04, 2009 9:45 pm
I'm GASsing hard for a vintage style white strat...
Ever since I picked up the guitar because of Hendrix I've wanted a Strat, that says Fender on the HS... And a maple neck and fretboard... And SSS pup setup...
I should be getting a nice paycheck next tuesday and was thinking of investing it in a Strat... Budget at about $1000...
Not really wanting to get a brand new one I browsed the net and these two have peaked my interest:
1. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=200402111950&Category=156025&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D2
2. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=130336823162&Category=33039&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D2
I seems that the price point is very close on each one...
I'd have to pay some extra custom taxes for the one in the US but I'm really liking the look of it more... Also the nitro neck seems cool, anyone know if it has any real effect on the tone?
the second option is nice also, not really into relic'd guitars but might make an exception as it imo looks really cool, also the pup wiring peaked my interest...
Just shoot out your opinions please...
EDIT: also tell me if you think the deals are good or not...
Both of them have an make an offer option so I'd like to know how low you think they might go...

Backwards reverb effect explained
Yes, yes, it's true..., I'm a huge fan of Johnny Marr's guitar work, so flame away!!!
I always wondered how to nail that effect on "how soon is now", as this dude has dubbed the "screaming guitar". Anyway, he fcuking nails it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeE4mjS1BKM&feature=related
Fully explained by reversing the guitar with a long reverb in pro tools, and then reversing again. ***Warning, if you have no patience, the first minute of the video he's just kinda fcuking around with his gear***

I'm having problems with humming on my Edge 1. I went down to the local guitar shop and they said i could put in shielding and upgrade to shielded wires. do you think that would fix the hum or do i need to look at upgrading my pickups, if so i cant find any that would fit without routing.

Only idea i could think of was removing the whole panel and airbrushing it all but not sure how the small stuff would turn out....
So about a month ago I got the Guitar Rig Mobile, realized I didn't want/need it and Lanning said he'd trade his pedal that he had for it and at first I said no because I needed the money but then I decided, whatever no one wants it so why not?
So a couple days later I talk to Lanning to see what the hold up in shipping is, I get worried, check outside, see no box in sight,E-mail Lanning then check outside again and there it was the one place I didn't look out there in the cold for a full day.....
Anyways, the pedal is great and I had a good tone going but I screwed it up but I'm gonna be searching for that tone 24/7...

Guitar refinishing advice!
Ok, so I'm thinking of doing it again. I'm going to try and refinish a guitar. NOW, thankfully, there's no need for me to apply fire to this guitar lol.
The advice I'm looking for at this point in time is the best ways to get the finish off. I'm doing this to my Dime Shadow so that tells you what I'm working with as far as what I need to get through.
I want to do the WHOLE guitar, neck and headstock and all. My concerns right now are the binding and the smoothness of the neck being compromised AND keeping the Dean logo intact.

Orianthi
by Hippi on Fri Nov 06, 2009 12:29 am
anyone ever heard of this girl not bad she has more feel than most chick shredders in my opinion, it's too bad her new album is mostly pop I think it's gonna make her a one hit wonder.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXf8oJq049w&feature=related
| Quote: |
At 24 years old, Orianthi has already experienced what most aspiring musicians only dream of. She's opened for her hero (Steve Vai), backed an Idol (Carrie Underwood), traded solos with a legend (Carlos Santana) and shared the stage with the King of Pop (Michael Jackson). What's left to conquer? The world stage, for one, and this guitar wunderkind has her sights clearly set on the road ahead.
After a performance with Carrie Underwood on stage at the 2009 Grammy Awards the blogosphere was buzzing with news of this little-known guitar prodigy. It prompted Michael Jackson to call with an offer for her to be his guitarist for his dates at the O2 Arena in London. When offered the gig in Michael Jackson’s live band, Orianthi joined a prestigious line of guitar players including Eddie Van Halen, Santana, Slash, Steve Stevens, Jennifer Batten and Larry Carlton. Sadly the tour was not to be and music lost an icon. “Working with Michael was a life-changing experience,” Orianthi reflects, “One I will never forget.”
Her story starts in Adelaide on the southern tip of Australia where, at the age of six, Orianthi began taking an interest in her dad's record collection. "Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Cream, Santana… he was into guitar players that are real songwriters," she boasts. Growing up in the 80s, a decade remembered for its many guitar greats, Orianthi also listened to a lot of Whitesnake, Van Halen and Def Leppard. Her father, who used to be a player in a Greek band, also kept plenty of instruments around the house, and it didn't take long before Orianthi strummed her first chord. Mastering the six-string came naturally.
"When I was 11, Carlos Santana came to play Adelaide and that show really affected me," she recounts. “I begged my dad to get me a second hand electric guitar so I could be like Carlos, and that was it, no more acoustic. After that, I would buy all of Carlos' videos — on VHS! — which I kept rewinding to try and learn his solos. I totally wore out the tapes."
Some seven years later when Carlos Santana passed through Adelaide again Carlos' brother arranged a sound-check meeting between the guitar god and his young disciple after hearing some of her music. A sound check jam evolved into an invitation to join him on stage where Orianthi played for about 35 minutes and took a solo in front of a hometown crowd. Performances, tours and guest appearances with Steve Vai, ZZ Top and Prince have kept Orianthi busy up to this point.
But guitar is far from Orianthi’s only means of expression. Before she received the call from the King of Pop, Orianthi had already been hard at work on her upcoming album, Believe, on which she sings, writes and leads her own band. Working with Geffen Records Chairman and A&R veteran Ron Fair and producer Howard Benson (All American Rejects, Daughtry, My Chemical Romance, Three Days Grace) her fierceness of character has made its way to songs that will simply knock the socks off of any boy in the rock star schoolyard.
Orianthi packs modern girl-power punch into every turn of phrase, but it’s the shredding that takes her brand of rock to an entirely new level. Songs like “Suffocated” and “Think Like A Man” are anthemic rock tracks recalling at time Evanescence, Avril Lavigne, Paramore and even a less-music row more-sunset strip Taylor Swift. First single “According To You” is a catchy tale of an ungrateful boyfriend with a killer guitar solo. The result: a thunderous, hook and riff driven debut that sounds larger than life. If, for a moment, you’ve thought the music world could use another taste of The Runaways’ Joan Jett, let us introduce you to Orianthi. |
I got this from my Uncle for an early Christmas present and I love it. I played it through the G2G Mr. Scary and it's amazing!
Love it!!
Jamming with my friend and his new bass
by Sceptre on Fri Nov 06, 2009 4:30 am
Hey guys, this is me and my friend jamming and screwing around the day after he bought his new bass guitar, he doesn't know a whole lot of stuff that I do but hes a fast learner as you can see and he keeps up with me for the most part. Him and his friend want me to play lead guitar for them, but we need to find a drummer as well.
Feel free to skip the parts where we are just talking as this wasnt planned or anything we just kind of turned on the camera and started jamming with whatever came to mind, I've got some more when they are up if anyone cares.
BTW I apparently act pretty silly when I'm on camera, and I'm pretty camera shy so most of the time so no crazy headbanging or nothing here lol. Spontaneous random jam session for the win!!!!

how many of you play other instruments?
by redneck on Fri Nov 06, 2009 7:46 am
just curious how many of you guys play instruments other than guitar.
I've been playing the banjo for while now, although i don't consider myself a banjo player.
what do you guys play?
I don't really consider the bass guitar a separate instrument as they are tuned and (basically) played the same, although bass requires a different style.
The guitars you will never sell
What are the guitars that fit you perfectly (or perhaps there's emotional attachment) and you will never ever put them up for sale?
Right now these 2 feel like they're not going anywhere, ever (until the universe implodes or explodes, those theories are still under conversation)
Anybody from South Dakota
I just got orders to Ellsworth AFB, SD, and will be there around February. Any body from around Rapid City or any where close to there.

I've decided I need one of those Guitar Gizmo-thingys that has everything in one. I'm kinda fed up of having bits everywhere and wish there was just one universal thing I could carry arround.
Does anyone use anything like this and can recommend which one is best?
Thanks.
Got my Jackson RR24 today.
Neck is a touch thicker than expected (Dean VMNT1 neck is thinner) but it fits incredibly well with my hand. Compound radius is fantastic. Weight is great. Perfect balance. EMG is fine for now.... it'll go the way of the blackout soon enough.
Was able to get it restrung and strings stretched and in perfect tuning in 25 minutes, new record!
Only two pr0n shots... one of it on the wall and a jam pic hehe.
This guitar is as good as any other USA guitar. It is MIJ. And yes, I make funny guitar faces! It's such a bad habit...

Has anybody ever tried one of these?
Zach Vex is a very creative dude.
What do you guys think?
http://zvex.com/
Although I'm a total Dean whore... I still dabble in other manufacturer's guitars.
PRS happens to be one of my all-time favorites and thought I'd share one of mine with y'all.
This one happens to be a 98 McCarty with a solid Indian Rosewood Neck. The obligatory 10-Top with a killer Tortoise Shell finish.
The tone of this guitar is astounding... I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's absolutely due to the IRW neck.
I'm pondering a custom Soltero from Dean with an IRW neck. I'm still deciding on specs... but this guitar has definitely pushed me towards a Dean Custom Shop
I also have a limited Edition PRS SC245 that comes close in tone... but there's just something about a solid unfinished rosewood neck that simply screams the word TONE!

Any fans of slipknot--Or not
I wasn't sure how many people liked slipknot on this fourm so chime in! But, if you dont like them, please explain why?
EMG 81TW output gain in compare with Seymour Duncan TB-14
I compared these pickups - TB-14 louder and have more output gain than 81TW.
It's normal?
Because I've hear that active pickups louder than passive.
I certainly do... and have had them for years. I've tried every type of cleaner and they all remove the haze from my hardware... but open the case in a month or so and it's back!
I've finally found a GREAT product that works incredibly well and keeps the haze from re-forming.
I know that some of the older Dean cases had glue issues... and that's what causes the fog/haze, but it happens on a bunch of my guitars not just my Deans.
If you plan on refinishing your guitar... DO NOT get this cleaner on the finish since it contains silicone.

Volume Attenuator Box
by rridner on Sat Nov 07, 2009 9:32 pm
has anyone ever tried one of these? they seem a bit cheap seeing as how THD sells attenuators for like $300. I know this is far simpler than the THD one though. Would be nice to get the full saturation of my tube amp at low volumes. Whatcha think?!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ATTENUATOR-FOR-FENDER-HOT-ROD-BLUES-DELUXE-DEVILLE-TWIN_W0QQitemZ160374733761QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2557143bc1
Building my own Frankenstrat!
Well I'm gonna build my own frankenstrat... everything is all good to go... but I need to decide on a pickup.
The big thing here is alnico II vs alnico V... Not even gonna mess with Alnico 8. Ed has used all of these.
I love the tone he gets on "Drop Dead Legs" Its got that awesome sweet smoothed out distortion tone. Its not really crunchy and chunky like an Alnico V Magnet.
Now Listen to Mean Street.. off of the Fair Warning album. Thats Alnico V to my ears. Its not all smooth, its got a bit more air in the tone and a lot more crunch.
Its gonna be Alder... not ash like Van Halens..
It will have a Floyd Rose.. Prolly grab a mighty mite Jackson lic. neck.
1 Humbucker 1 Vol pickguard...
I guess Im going with an Alnico ii magnet and I dont remember the purpose of this post.
*Edit*
I think Alnico II sounds a bit more Buzzy or grainy...
Alnico V is a more solid, crunch...
Crappy representation here:
Alnico II - ,.,.,.,.,.,,.., Smooth sounding, not as open. The notes seem to crumble together.
Alnico V - /\/\/\/\/\/\/ Jagged sounding when it breaks up, more open sounding?
Dunno if that made any sense lol...

Nostalgia Pickups - What do they sound like?
by jimlp on Sun Nov 08, 2009 6:22 pm
Like the title says, I am curious as to what these are similar to tone wise. I have a set of these that I bought off a forumite but have not had a guitar I wanted to try them in yet.
Hey everyone. Could you post pics of your 79 series guitars. Mainly a 79mlf, i am very interested in this guitar
Also, after reading mtuck's review on HC, he states that the floyd on it is terrible. I am a floyd-virgin and dont want to make a mistake by buying a guitar that will give me nothing but problems. If some of y'all could take the time and tell me your thoughts on this particular LFR you could maybe perhaps make my mind up for me
I have played a 79Z and i am assuming that it has the same neck as the MLf, which i quite like.
Cheers
Who uses one and can you please measure the logo in inches and tell me so I can order another for my cab...thanks...they currently sell 6, 9, or 11 inch logos to put on the front of the cab...PM me.
So the band might start practicing at my house, but I definitely need some sort of insulation to keep the sound down as much as possible. I'll take any and all advice, tips, and suggestions, from the poorest, cheapest methods, to how the pro's do it in the studio, and everything in between! I need as many ideas as possible!

Been Rocking The Blueburst Lately
by spz on Mon Nov 09, 2009 9:54 am
The blackburst is taking a rest due to some input jack issues I've been too lazy to look into, so I've been rocking the blueburst instead.
I figured some action pics from our mini tour of Denmark last weekend were in order:
Metallica tonight, Grand Rapids. Whos going?
I"ll be there, let me know.
I see Steve has this one listed. Love the neck and color. If I were a 6 string player and not a bassman, I'd have to have this.

NGD! (NDC)
by AhsanU on Mon Nov 09, 2009 10:19 pm
Well, wasn't too happy with a non-Floyd ML '79. So I sold it, along with a crap-load of electronics and was able to afford this, and an entire set of Rock Band 2 for PS3
Although, in retrospect.. I should've invested that money in a proper Floyd Rose. Oh well, time to sell some sperm
Enjoy the pr0n.
TEH BOX!
And inside the box.. ANOTHER BOX!
Then inside that box.. a guitar!
Taking the guitar out:
Agile!
Naked ebony neck, looks really good. Currently debating whether or not I should add some Metallica ninja star inlays on it. James Hetfield = amazing guitarist. I actually purchased this guitar because he is one of my idols.
Blasphemous EMG's and LFR. *shrug* Seymour Duncan Blackouts and an OFR will come soon
And of course, the body. Agile Ghost Pro 6.
And last, but not least: a group shot.
Review of RWG 570T-SP-Clearcoat
First, I can't find my camera, so I used my phone camera, which is supposed to be good. It has 5mp, but the pics still suck, so bear with them, until I find my real camera.
Now the review.
Features: This is a Tele style guitar with neck-thru and 22 frets. It has a 25.5" scale, which is the only thing I don't like. The top is a 1/4" 'slab' of excellent spalted maple, and the back is excellent mahogany. I don't think I've ever seen a better looking piece of spalted maple. The back appears to be real mahogany, but I wouldn't bet my life on it. It has 2 single coil pups that actually sound pretty good. The pots are useless to me, as I never use them. The 3-way switch works. The Wilkinson tuners work very well. The bridge is MUCH better than the POS bridge that came on my SX Tele. The strings are 9-42 and will be replaced, ASAP. The neck-thru construction RULES! I love the neck 'joint' on this. There is no heel to get in the way. The neck-thru is a 5-piece job with nato and the stringers appear to be maple or some other light wood. It's hard to tell, as they are very thin. The ebony fingerboard looks good, but it is very dry. I'll fix that when I restring, and it will probably look like ebony. It's so dry now, that it looks really pasty and pale (for ebony). So far, the lack of position markers hasn't bothered me. The side markers are OK. I may have a problem, if I ever gig again in a dark place. I may buy some dots and install them myself.
Fit and finish: The high-gloss finish is nicely done. It had a couple of boo-boos that were mentioned in the sales malarkey, so the other couple of teeny flaws don't bother me. One of the other flaws is a pin-prick sized bubble (that I didn't find until my 4th pass over the top), and the other is a drop-filled spot by the bridge pup (probably courtesy of a gnat). The 'blems' are both on the upper bout edge. One is a booger in the spalted top, and the other is a dink on the edge. If you don't look directly at all of them, you won't notice them. Both of my USA Deans (with gloss finishes) had more blems, but one was a repaint, and the other was used. The 'fit' of everything appears to be near perfect. Overall, I would give a 9.8, even with the very minor blems. Otherwise, the wood appears to be flawless, and the top is magnificent!
Action: The action was terrible out of the box. I did as much as I could, given that the uber-light strings just don't have enough pull to straighten the neck. I set the trussrod to its loosest possible setting, but the neck is, at best, straight. I need to change the gauge to 10's, which will fix that part. The nut sucks, as some bonehead cut the slots too deep for the low E and A strings. They don't buzz, but still should be a tad higher. The high E end is too high. I'll have to replace the nut, even though I have the action sets as low as I like, with no buzzing. I'm just a little picky about my nuts.
Sound: The damn thing sounds really good! I'm impressed! There's no noise, harmonics actually jump out at you, and the neck and bridge pups sound just like you'd expect a good pair of humbuckers to sound (they're single coils). It must be the soft, spalted top, with the mahogany and nato that does it. I doesn't sound anything like a Tele, which is great for me, as I don't like the way that Teles sound. The metallic twang is GONE, and good riddance! I guess I'll declare them to be keepers, which will certainly save me some money!
Fini: I'm glad I bought this guitar. Based on brand name stuff out there, this should have cost 1000-1500 bucks, but it only cost $334. I know it's a blem, but it's not much of one. The only deal that I've ever gotten that was better was my Dean Sweetwood guitars. I only paid around 1/4 of MSRP for both of them. This one has a claimed MSRP of $800. As RWG is a direct seller like Carvin and Rondo, the prices are lower than you'd expect, as they don't have to share any profit with distributors or dealers. I'm not trying to knock any seller, as there are benefits from dealers that you don't get from Rondo or RWG. I'm just too damn cheap to pay the price.
This guitar is proof that a Korean shop can build a quality guitar, given the proper materials, nut excluded. Speaking of the nut, RWG claims that a great setup guy does all their guitars before they ship them. The guy must have been drunk and/or blind when he set mine up.
Here's the crappy phone pics:
hey folks!!!
im new around here. i recently fell in love with the tone and style of palominos. just wondering if anyone knows the body depth. i heard somewhere that it was about 4 inches. if so that's pretty huge. my gretsch 5120 is about 2.75 in depth so im not sure if i want to go much deeper than that.
Should I buy this Guitar...? Might be Getting it wednesday!
http://www.ovationuk.co.uk/page124.html
Scroll down its the blue one on the right.
From what I can find it is a "Hardwood" (Plywood) body with a maple neck, Kahler 2330 Flyer Trem. Possibly a Duncan Super Distortion in the bridge, One Volume knob thats it.
This one is a bit beat up... missing the locking nut and I think the Kahler needs a few parts replaced but I have the option of buying this guitar for $90... What do you guys think?
The one im looking at is from 1982. Its definitely an 80's guitar. I'm skeptical of the Kahler trem though...
Dime Shadow project officially started
Well I've stripped all the hardware off this thing and I'll start sanding in the AM. I'm going to be lazy and not go all the way down to the wood...
I plan to use a coat of primer before painting though, and then there's the clear coat issue I need to tackle when I get to it. Looking REAL forward to that
Thank god there's no reason to go anywhere NEAR this with fire lol
I found this to be pretty interesting....
Oh then there's THIS. That's reassuring... Notice the left side please.
Help me name my Music Store.... Please?!
Well some friends and I are going to split the investments and open a music store.. I for one cant wait.
We cannot think of a name though... thats where I need your guys help!!!
What are some cool names for music stores? Even some play on words with a song reference would be cool. Something unique and creative is better, preferably even catchy!
We are of course specializing in Guitars and guitar parts... and some basses. Eventually some drum equipment.... some mics etc etc
Let this become a huge thread of serious... goofy... stupid... catchy.. names for a Music Store!

New Engl e530 preamp - Clips inside
Hey guys, not been round these parts much recently!
Anyway, I recently chipped in my bias mod 6505 for some decent cash, and most of it went towards this little beast. I plan on powering this with a Mesa Stereo 2:50 or Simul-Class 2:90, or maybe a Marshall EL34 50/50 or 100/100. Hopefully the Mesa, though.
If you're wondering how I took these clips, the e530 has a built-in 1.5w poweramp that is capable of running a cab from the headphones output. It's an awesome idea, gets plenty loud for rehearsing at home, and is also fantastic for demoing the preamp without a poweramp colouring it's sound.
Please read the descriptions on the Youtube pages for details on what gear I'm using in each clip.

Slippery pedals...
by Trashed on Tue Nov 10, 2009 3:46 pm
At our last gig I had some trouble with my Dunlop Wah...
Technically nothing wrong but as I always perform in chuck taylors that have a very smooth soles...
Combine that with some spilled beer or other liquid on the pedal and you have very little grip...
I almost slipped right off the stage head first when I stomped on it...
Anyway got a gig coming up in a couple of weeks and just wondering if anyone has had the same kind of trouble, and If anyone has any suggestions on adding some grip on the pedal...
Some kind of tape I imagine but I'm not sure what would be the best, and also kind of cheap solution...
Duct tape any good?

Need help w/ Derek And the Dominoes Layla
by Sceptre on Wed Nov 11, 2009 2:30 am
Hey guys
I am trying to learn this song. I have tabs but I don't think the verse is correct and I cannot find one single good video that shows how to play the verse or the chorus. I've got the intro down rock solid but apparently no one on youtube likes to learn past that point. I am learning the original electric guitar version from Derek and the Dominoes, not the acoustic version from "Unplugged". A major issue I am having is that in the song, I cannot hear the rythym guitar well enough during the verse to actually pick out the rythym, its kinda lost in the mix to me, so what I need is a video that will give me an idea of the rythym during the verse and chorus, and some accurate tabs to go with it. If someone would PLEASE kindly point me in the direction of such a video I would be eternally grateful.
EDIT: Oh and if anyone has an isolated guitar track from that song, that would be awesome!!!!!!
MANY THANKS in advance!
Tell me about the Baker Act and HWS Pickups!

What DMT bridge pup goes best with HWS?
Im getting an HWS pickup for my Ibanez pretige RG. Im considering going with a "Lights Out" pup for the bridge. Will this sound balanced? I know they pair the "HWS" with the "Baker Act" pup in the MAB guitar, but the "Baker Act" sounds a bit spongy and fuzzy to my ears and want a smoother more solid tone. Is this a good combo, or is the Baker act better balanced?
oh weekly Rockonomics, why must you taunt me so
i have a huge stiffy for razorbacks. and a USA just makes it all that much better.

(NDC) EPI Makeover DONE!! WITH PROGRESS PICS!
by Culprit on Thu Nov 12, 2009 5:30 pm
Hey peeps, took some time to gather pics I've taken during the makeover. Turned out better than I thought it would
Hope you like it
Before it all began...
Stripped from electronics & hardware
And after some sanding down the old paint it was time to paint!
Me applying a layer of primer. (pic stolen from my girlfriends camera, hence her guitar on the left
Dramatic color change
Cut out, shaped and drilled to fit. A little different from the original. I accidentlly removed more material than needed, but the difference is pretty small
A little appetizer of things to come
after masking of, and painting the headstock black.
After puting my logo on the body & head, and several cans of clear later I ended up with this!
All done! Put the dimebucker I had lying around in the bridge pos. and kept the stock epiphone pup in the neck
I sprayed the tree-logo with chrome spray paint, but it didn't turn out looking chromed at all... It just looks gray...
My initials. Not super pleased with the way it turned out, but I'll live
Well there you have it! Took a lot of time, but was a lot of fun. And now I have another custom guitar
Alice in Chains - Check My Brain - main riff question?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBcADQziQWY
Is this just done by bending the string and releasing tension or is it a bit of studio trickery? I can generally get a decent idea what is going on, but this one is little freaky in its subtle way
Anyone see them live pull it off?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOgb260QNqQ
answered my own question and it is just pulling/releasing tension on string, they pulled it off well on Kimmell. (the bass really helps nail it down)
DAVE MUSTAINE To Auction Off Korean DEAN Signature Models
Droogies!
With the incredible demand, and the constant orders being filled with DEAN guitars for the Dave Mustaine Signature Line, we had decisions to make in keeping up with the orders. This is a great problem to have, and because the 'Korean made' DEAN guitars are so remarkable, I agreed to play these while the USA models were being made, and to give my complete support and understanding as we got this new venture with DEAN underway, and I have been so happy with any and all of the guitars they have presented me with, that it wasn't until recently that I even remembered there was a difference!
However, being one of the more finicky guitarists, I wanted to have the USA guitars for my collection, which is made up of several other brands I have in storage, and the rest are my quiver of DEAN guitars.
I have several of these incredible DEAN Korean models, and I have conferred with Elliott Rubison that we are going to replace this arsenal of six-string weaponry - the Korean guitars - with the USA guitars.
Here's where you come in: we are going to auction off all of my Korean ones. We are also going to take the winning bid and donate all the winnings (after the auction is closed and shipping and handling charges are deducted) to a (unnamed as of yet - deciding between two recipients still) charity this year. Dave McRobb will be working with DEAN and many of our partners to bring awareness of this auction before the Holidays, and I encourage you, if you can't afford to bid for these KILLER KOREAN GUITARS, then you can show your support by just spreading the word (banners, fliers, whatev!) and drawing as much success for these menacing war toys, to benefit some needy children this Christmas. Until then, have a great Holiday Season, God Bless you all, and thank you for your support.

List of forgiving / non-forgiving amps
I often see amps described by sellers as "non-forgiving"..., so if your techniques sucks, these amps won't hide it!!!
Has anyone here ever made a list of these amps?
Is there something in the design to identify them, i.e. master volume?
What would people here consider to be a "forgiving" amp? I'll assume something with lots of compression.
Just curious, I've never seen a thread on this.
Anyone know what kind of guitar he is playing in the "too young to fall in love" video? I have seen that video 100 times but just really noticed how bad ass the guitar looks. If you ask me that is an early RB style geet.
Anyone ever played Carlton Camel amp?
I can't seem to find much on it other than that Carlton is a Scottish company and the amp was made in the 90's.
There is one for sale near me for cheap, and I'm gonna go try it out whenever I get a chance, but figured someone here might know a thing or two about this amp.
This is what I'm talking about:

I, along with alot of others, have been waiting for the day Gibson decided to finallly breathe some life back into Kramer guitars other than a few cheap guitars and 2/3 expensive remakes of classics. Know we have a new Kramer site finally with some new models and changes to older ones...but not quite what i wanted.
I was wanting begging for a return to the glory days of Kramer but it seems Gibson are going to trying taking it in a new direction

Also, how to Dean Caddilac's sound? Are they frackin beast's? With that giant headstock, i'd think so.
Anyway... any help would be greatful. I'd also change the bridge pickup to a Seymour Duncan JB, if you care.

Good 6 String Pickup............
For C#?
I alternate between stuff like Slayer and SuperJoint Ritual in that tuning. So any suggestions on what would make a nice pickup for C#?
I'm sort of leaning towards a DiMarzio Drop Sonic because supposedly it's nice for lower tuning.
How do most of you have your gain set? My friends find it strange that I play metal, yet I have my gain knob barely past 8 o'clock
How loud do you play in guitar in your house?

Replace my OD pedal!
by Graunke on Sat Nov 14, 2009 4:47 pm
I am running a ZW overdrive pedal from MXR. I leave the gain at 5%, so I'm just using it to Fatten up the tone. But this son of a bitch is noisy! It's really starting to get on my nerves.
Thos of you that have owned this pedal, what did you switch to? Am I the only one that uses it this way? Make my rig quieter please!!!
What would this sound like?
EMG 81x/85x with an 18 volt mod? im thinking of doing this eventually for my ltd, maybe even my sg too.

From his prolific solo work, to his prominent memberships in the supergroup Praxis and rock legends Guns N’ Roses, Buckethead has displayed one of the most fiery creative personas of our times, and has continually affirmed his stance in the upper echelon of contemporary shredders. Equally attention-grabbing as his incendiary chops, Buckethead’s stage show and visual presence remain unique among the rock field, and his Gibson guitars—a white Les Paul in particular—have always been a big part of that. As Gibson continues to roll out the Rocktober action, the Buckethead Signature Les Paul celebrates this unparalleled artist’s achievements. With an oversized, chambered Les Paul body, a marker-less ebony fingerboard, and Buckethead’s choice of Gibson’s contemporary ceramic humbucking pickups—complete with modified electronics and “arcade” style kill switches—this is a Les Paul like none to have come before. My Tone Kicks ass!
by Graunke on Sun Nov 15, 2009 9:24 am
Yeah. It kicks ass. tonight was the best it's ever sounded. It was like Jesus made an amp, and it was my amp. Like angels ate a big f'ing dinner of steak with bacon wrapped around it, and it was so good that their farts sounded like GOd singing an Iron Maiden song.
Tonight was perfect. I don't know what happened. My Tone was amazing. To bad it was wasted on a club with a shitty sound system and a bad mix.
So here's how it happened.......
I'll leave the guitars/PU's out of it, because that's not uber improtant.
Line 6 Wireless --> ZW OD pedal ( gain at 5%, level flat, tone 50% )
--> Boss Chorus\
--> Mod Tone Analog Delay
--> Mod Tone Tuner
--> Marshall JCM 900 4100 (running at 8 ohms, into a stereo 8 ohm 1960B cab, at 50 watts)
Obviously the delay and chorus wern't on all the time.
It was amazing. I loved it. I got more compliments than ever before. I usually get a few, but tonight it was crazy. It made me a better player tonight, because I was so happy with my sound. It gave me wood.
It was like you put a pickup on chainsaw, and it sang Ave' Maria to you like you were in f'ing church.
So happy.
Any info on the Randall Mini-Stack?
When I was a kid and first got into guitar I bought a Randall Rockstack. It's a miniature "stack" with a 36 watt SS head and two 1x10 cabs. At the time I was into Pantera, Megadeth and White Zombie, so with that little stack and my purple Jackson Warrior I thought I was the next metal god.
The amp has been in storage for 15 years and I recently dug it out to play around with. Plugging in a Flying V and ripping out some metal riffs I was pleased to see it still works perfectly. It's got the scooped buzzsaw sound that absolutely nails Dime's "Vulgar" tone.
I was surprised that I couldn't find any info about this amp. There are only a couple mentions of it that I could find after searching pages and pages of google.
Does anyone know anything about this amp or where I could find more info?
Dean time capsule pickup

Do you like it? Im looking for new neck pickup and found that on the dean website. Anyone here owns it? I have to rely on soundclips I found and peoples opinions.
Im also open for suggestions for other hot neck pickups. Thanks
Anyone have this? I got to see how it works and I'm interested in getting this for recording. It also comes with POD Farm. Of course I would get the Metal Shop add on.

Dimarzio Super Distortion Pickups
I have a 2006 Dean USA Time Capsule V with the super distortion pickups. They sound okay at times but, at other times sound weak and muddy. I like crunch and distortion but would like some nice cleans to go with it. These just don't clean up really well. Anyone have the same experience? Was thinking of maybe leaving in the bridge pu and replacing the neck pu. Or maybe both. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

I know this is the dean forum so save your #$%@.
Anyone heard of them? Their top endorsee is Chris Amott of Arch Enemy.
I might end up getting one of these depending on price. The shitty thing is that the only store here in Canada that sells them is in Toronto but I'm sure if they are getting money out of it then they would ship it.
They have one model that I'm liking aside from the 5 extra frets. It's neck through, transparent yellow/orange and 27 frets. It looks stunning!
Just though you people should check em out some time.
And again. I'm not posting pictures of this so I'm not doing anything wrong.

New cab day. I scored a Basson B412 off craigslist for only $200! I couldn't pass it up after i read page affter page of 5 star reviews. I highly suggest this cab to anyone that wants a top of the line 412 for under $700. As for an overall review of the cab it is extremely clear and leads cut through amazingly well. Very well built cab. Heres a link to a new one: http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Basson-B412-Guitar-Cabinet?sku=609703

Help ID this guitar I saw on Saturday
by PDogg81 on Mon Nov 16, 2009 6:38 pm
I saw James Hetfield playing a pretty sweet looking reddish looking explorer on Saturday night with an interesting headstock, but I can't find it on any manufacturer sites. Can anyone help me identify it? The pointy part of the headstock really drew my attention.
The first pic is a blurry facebook resized pic from my friends cell phone. The second is a very similar looking (or possibly the same) guitar that I found a pic of through google.

Thanks for your help.
Anyone in LA/Hollywood area help a brother out??????????????
Our own RZBK777 sent me a link to a craigslisting of a guitar I've been after for years.
Here is link.
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/msg/1467559612.html
Only thing is that he won't ship. I can send money order or a paypal in about 24 hours of hearing from anyone who would be willing to help me snag this guitar. Plus gas money and shipping cost to Escondido California where my friend lives who could fix the paint on it.
I'd need someone to check it out and make sure it is playable and in good shape other than cosmetic.
Thanks, Nightrain
Time for a new amp!
by Larsson on Mon Nov 16, 2009 8:49 pm
Hello from Sweden!
My band got a rehearsal room today, so finally we can play LOUD!
We have been playing in my apartment up until now and for that i have used my Fender Cybertwin. It works great, the different clean sounds + Line6 Uber metal makes some serious distorsion.
However, now it's time to buy myself a head/combo meant for the rehearsal room.
*It can be a head or a combo
*It does not have to be a metal amp. An amp with a variety of cleans can be really good since i can use my Line6 Uber metal distorsion pedal with it.
*If its built in distorsion, it must have a lot of gain and power
*I dont want it to be advanced. If there is like 15 knobs i will have my hands more on the knobs then on my Dean.
*A built in FX-loop would be great, but it's not a must
*If the amp sounds good, price pretty much won't matter
So i've checked the 6505 and it seems pretty sweet. Is it heavy IRL? Good pricing and few knobs. The amp that has impressed me most is the Bugera 6262. But i've also heard people saying that they are bad quality and break a lot? Listen to this, pretty much the most brutal guitar sound i've ever heard:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZchxwqOgMQ&feature=related
Don't like ENGL so far. Too many knobs! Seems hard to get a nice sound out of it? Prove me wrong.
I was actually gasing for a Carvin Legacy, but there's no resellers in Sweden. That amp have the best cleans and the best lead sounds i've ever heard, and putting my Uber metal on the clean channel might have done the trick. Good price too! Oh well....
New pups for my Black Gold Z
So, this is the story: I wanted to change the stock pickups on the BGZ and I had two alternatives
- spend an enormous sum for the EMG gold
- reasons a bit 'and seek a cheaper alternative but still satisfactory
Then I tried a friend's guitar (Charvel 750XL) with the Tonerider Generator...and soon I found the perfect solution, because they sound pretty like the SD JB but with more basses and less harsh.
Soooo...with 52.28£ (including shipping from UK to Italy) I bought a NEW (!) set of Tonerider Generator zebra and this is the result
Damned '80s!!!
I'm in the market for a 1x12" extension cab to run occasionally with my older model Peavey Classic 30. I was hoping to get a Peavey C112E but I quickly found our that they are hard to come by and used ones sell for as much as another used C30.
Can anyone reccomend a decent 1x12 that doesn't cost a fortune? I don't want to drop a bunch on a cab I might use once every couple of months.
DFH Slime neck profile???
by kkdav on Tue Nov 17, 2009 12:47 am
Hey guys.
I was just wondering what neck profile is on the DFH Silme.
I've heard people saying that it's not the V shape like on most other Dime guitars, and it really would make a big difference on weather i would try to get one or not...
it really annoys me that the Dean site doesn't say anything about the neck profile

by BTMN on Tue Nov 17, 2009 3:00 am
Cant belive I actually had a request for the next Guitar Of The Week. Thanks Wombat.
Time for this week's cutie.
Here is the full story on this guitar from the day we met until I bought it.
I went to my first D.O.A. Open House in 2004. One of the first people I started chatting to was a guy nicknamed Thor. His member number is 02 0081. Which is a variation of my favorite number 128, my birthdate, 01/28. As we are talking about this we are walking in the artist room at Dean HQ. I tell Thor if there is any guitar ***128 or ****28 I'm gonna have a hard time NOT taking it home. I scan the room and instantly see and gravitate to this Natural TC Z. I take it off the rack, look it over lustfully, and glance at the serial number, 03 00628. I hail Thor and turn the headstock around for him to view. His response is something like, that aint right, or something along those lines...
Wow!, was my response, and I thought about that guitar all day and for the next month. So much that I called up Dean, and went back over to HQ there to play it and drool on it a lil more. We talked about shipping it out to a local dealer and me purchasing it.
A few months and a few guitars later it is time to make a choice on what to jam at DOA 2005. I put together with Thor and another guy Dave on guitars to do a UFO tune. At the jam Dave goes over and picks up a Z , turns around, and I'm floored he has chosen the same TC Z 03 00628. All the guitars they have, Dean brings this one to the jam and Dave chooses to play it on the song we are doing. Couple months later still thinking of that Z, I talked with a couple dealers about getting it, but I just couldn't.
In 2006 I saw this guitar on Funky Munky Music's site and I saw it made an appearance or two on Evilbay. Well, mid January 2007 my heart jumped seeing FunkyMunkyJon's posting, with my name on the F/S posting no less, with this Time Capsule Z listed at a blowout price. Then someone posted about getting it. Well, I didn't think I would let it get away so easily that time. I posted a Hamer for sale and Bad Jaxx sprang on it. I think he made a wise choice in helpin' a Dean/Hamer brother out. As if all this wasn't cool enough Jaxx said he was looking at a few guitars the weekend before and said to himself, might wanna wait, a cool Hamer might come along.
So when I was calling him to tell him I was gonna get that cool Standard out to him the next day, I realised the last four number to reach Jaxx are 0628.

FINALLY!!!! Lovin' the Shadow ML
by thud on Tue Nov 17, 2009 7:45 pm
Got to crank up the Shadow I snagged from Conbud at the jam room last night.....
TOO AWESOME FOR WORDS!!!!
It's got truckloads o' balls without the low end being muddy, and on full chords every note is clear as a bell.
An added bonus is the schweet overtones/feedback when sustaining a note for a while. (Controlled feedback is always fun! )
Conbud, you've made me one happy guy by passing on that axe. It's everything I'd hoped for and then some.
NGD NDC Bernie Rico Jr. Hybrid Vixen
First off, WOW. "HOLY s#%t!" is probably a bit more fitting, actually. This guitar is frippin incredible. Best import I've ever laid my eyes/hands on, without a doubt, by far. I'll just flat-out say it: This guitar plays and feels like a USA-made guitar. You can definitely tell Bernie had a big part in making this guitar happen. I went over this like a God damn bloodhound and found only 1 tiny, tiny imperfection. A really small black dot up by the point on the back of the neck where the black paint meets the naked neck. That's it. No bad routing. Clean, dust/polishing compound free cavities. No shitty masking job. The neck is set solid. Frets are seated and dressed to perfection. The ebony fretboard is dark and polished beautifully. The wiring is clean. The inlays just glisten. The finish on this guitar is like glass, very impressive! I've seen much worse finishing on $3500 LP's, for example.
Bernie assured me that these guitars play like USA's and do not play like your typical import and he wasn't frippin kidding. Not even close. Only the wood is CNC'd in Korea, he does the rest and when you see one of these in person and lay your hands on it, you can absolutely tell.
I forgot to mention before that the neck is also a nice 3-piece maple. The Korean OFR is holding up very well too. I went nuts on this thing for about an hour and it's still dead-on. Very impressed with that. The Blackouts sound great, not sure about the "Metal" Blackout in the bridge, though. I'll give my final thoughts after really getting to crank it up at practice.
Unless he keeps making these Hybrid series guitars, it's gonna be tough to buy another import guitar, that's for damn sure.
Enough of my babbling, I know what you came here for. teh pr0n...
I apologize in advance, my GF has a shitty camera and it was dying as I took these but, it's better than nothing.
My cat, aptly named "Bernie" checks out the scene.

Big props to Rob for letting me know Bernie was blowing these out. Bernie hooked me up with a KILLER deal! Bernie was an absolute pleasure to deal with too. Great guy. He'll be getting my business in the future, that's for damn sure. I urge everyone to check one of these out. You'll fall in love.

Def Lep / Dean Caddilic Me & My Wine?
by Aceman on Wed Nov 18, 2009 3:04 am
Let's talk about this Dean guitar. A Wine Red Les Paul is one of the most beautiful guitars on the planet, IMO. But it has to have the right shade. I call them Burgundy Beauties. Not red, not too purple - but a deep dark red/purple blend.
What do you guys know about this guitar? What pups, is that a Khaler?
This is the only time I've ever seen, it in this video (check out ~2:00).

And check out the blue sparkle burst on Collins!
What are the advantages and disadvantages of both? I have a Dimebucker, but I'm tired of dealing with the harshness and compression (I keep my gain low and roll my guitar's tone knob down to 6 or 7). It also doesn't clean up as well as I'd like (I'd rather roll off the volume for clean-ish sounds than switch to the clean channel). I've been thinking about getting a 59 or Screamin Demon to replace it in the bridge. Will these give me a warm, open sound, but still be tight and crunchy enough for metal? Will they give me enough sustain?
Not interested in actives. Looking forward to getting some helpful input.

So, simple question. I am planning to get a Mesa 4x12 cab for my Peavey 6505 / Bugera 6262 (havent decided yet).
Is this a good cab for my head? Does Mesa deliver good cabs, and if they do, what is it that makes them good?
Slayer, Megadeth, and Testament. Best line up of the year 2010 so far.

What hardware can I get??
by TXC123 on Wed Nov 18, 2009 10:45 pm
Hey guys, im looking to black out my caddy. Where can I find hardware that will fit? I ordered grover style tuners from guitar fetish but they didnt fit. Anyone know where to grab some?
Thanks tim
What different tunings do you guys use?
I've been looking at used guitars as always and more and more often I seeing guitars tuned to B or Drop A which I think is ridicules, so below are the tuning I use and lets see what tunings you guys use.
My main two SG's are tuned and intonated to E standard but they stay in Drop D most of the time along with my razor v.
My Les Paul is in open E major.
My Tele, strat, baby ml, acoustic, randy rhoads, and backup sg are in standard E
i read a thread on this and couldnt find it.
but what does moving the 85 to the bridge do and the 81 in the neck the charactoristics(sp). thanks for your input

Been a while since I needed to take a new one. Plus you all like pics.
hey guys. looking for some opinions on a decent budget power amplifier to pair with my Engl E530. unless there's some new power amp out there with a great bang for buck, i'm going to assume used is the best option here. From what i've heard, there's the Peavey classic power amp, there's a marshall that i forget the model, and then i've heard Behringer makes some decent ones for the price. thoughts? i'm hoping to spend under $250.

Frequency Analysis of My Guitar
Here is a Frequency Analysis of my Schecter C-1 with an Evo2 Bridge Pickup. As you can see its pretty midrangey. All I did was use my Frequency Analyzer and go DI into my computer.
Mahogany Body and set mahogany neck with an evo2 bridge pickup.
I really didnt think it had that much midrange but mahogany really does..
When I get back home I'm going to try my strat next for comparison.
I think I'm going to get rid of the Evo2 and get a pickup with less midrange.
Looking for a New Amp maybe...
As you all know, by my sig, I have a Line 6 Spider 2, which I borrowed... and I have to return that soon.
Now, I have another amp, which I CAN use if the Spider 2 goes back to my dad's friend, but the tubes sound like ass. It's a 5150, and according to the original owner it has the original 10 year old tubes... so it's definitely time for a tube change.
I've had that amp since March 2009, and never upgraded the tubes. So now I'm stuck with a decision... PLEASE, help me decide!
A). Replace the tubes in the 5150, and play the hell out of it, and return the Spider 2.
or
B). Trade the 5150 for another amp, that sounds good, and doesn't need any work.
Please... I need some help here. It's a really tough decision... answer via reply AND poll!
Gigging Bands?!?!??! Questions.
by Graunke on Thu Nov 19, 2009 11:50 pm
When you have to bring your own production, what do you end up paying? Not like hiring just a sound guy to run teh house system. I'm talking someone bringing their own FoH and LIghts, setting up, running it, then tearing down?
What is the going rate for these services? Also, tell me your location or area, so I can make sure the comparisons are right.
Recommend me a USB recording interface

So, apparently Gibson is suspected of illegally importing wood from Madagascar.
http://blogs.nashvillescene.com/nashvillecream/2009/11/gibson_guitars_raided_by_fbi_f.php

Sources say the Nashville-based guitar manufacturer is being investigated for violating the Lacey Act, a key piece of environmental law, for importing endangered species of rosewood from Madagascar.
Rosewood is widely used in the construction of guitars and sells for $5,000 per cubic meter, more than double the price of mahogany. The island nation off Africa's east coast is a key producer of the hardwood, the export of which has links to international criminal activity.
A statement from Gibson released late Tuesday afternoon says the company is "fully co-operating" with the investigation. |
E minor pentatonic spiced up with chromatic passing tones
This is a cool chromatic line I've come up with doing a guest appearance on one of the songs of the upcoming 3rd OSV album. Click here to download the bigger version of the tablature and the mp3:
http://www.4shared.com/file/155780476/551875c7/Jonas_Tamas_-_OSV_-_Timeless_01_-_chromatic_passage.html
As you can see and hear, the solo is in the key of E minor, and it starts with two unison bends in the first bar, and a simple bend-and-release pattern in the second bar. Notice, how these two bars are rhythmically connected by the solo guitar, using different notes and techniques but the same rhythm.
At the end of the second bar I start the chromatic line. I took the 5 notes of the E minor pentatonic scale as reference points and did some chromatic 'journeys' around them. In the fourth bar you have to shift positions twice, so I wrote the fingering below these two points.
When using chromatic lines, it is important to end the passage on one of the main notes of the key - this time I've landed simply on the root (D string 14th fret).
ML ATF 3000 NECK......
by Dork on Fri Nov 20, 2009 10:44 am
Hey, does anyone know the neck shape on the ml atf 3000? is it a "v" shape or "c" shape? Not sure and can't find it anywhere. I thought it would be listed in the specs. I really like the "v" shape
Specs/type of caps used in Dean Soltero Standards?
Does anyone know the specs of the caps used in Dean Soltero Standards? Are they Sprague Orange Drop film/foil caps or ceramic type caps that come in most other mass produced guitars?
For ex: A common Sprague cap used to upgrade Les Paul body type guitars are .022mf 400v Orange Drop Caps or .033mf 400v Orange Drop caps. The caps in the Dean Soltero, look like a type of Sprague Orange Drop caps but I cannot read any ID on the caps.

Petition: More specs on website guitar descriptions
by Sceptre on Fri Nov 20, 2009 7:47 pm
Hey guys.
I have seen alot of people wishing and asking for Dean to display more specs on the guitars shown on the website. Namely neck profiles. Well, I remember the "Fix the forum" Petition, and it actually had an impact, well, maybe if enough people post here, they will update their specs. So, just quote the following list and add your name with the corresponding number. Lets find out some real details people!

Pocket Pod with Rechargeable batteries? Manual says no
by PDogg81 on Fri Nov 20, 2009 9:46 pm
I want to pick up a Line 6 Pocket Pod so that I can jam in the basement quietly, but not be stuck to within 3 feet of my practice amp.
The manual says that you aren't supposed to use rechargeables because of the lower voltage rating, but I'm reading reviews that say the thing really eats batteries quickly.
Has anyone else used rechargeable batteries with the Pocket Pod, and if so with what results? It's not worth spending 130 bucks on this thing if I'm going to have to use an power adapter that keeps me stationary anyway.
New guitar coming next week
With the Hardtail and Soltero SL sold to a couple of cool forum members, I was able to order this.
Here's the story behind it.
I have one Soltero SL and I LOVE it. It's got the quality of the U.S. but it's not quite as fancy, meaning I don't have to baby it. The SL reminds me of Les Paul Standards that I used to see guys play. They were killer guitars, but very road worthy too. They weren't as fancy as the Les Paul Artisan but the tone delivered.
I always figured I'd pick up another Soltero SL one day. Then I saw a youtube video from a dealer that said the SL was no longer made.
So I figure I'd keep my eye out for a used Soltero SL.
A couple of years ago my local Dean rep told me that there was an early Soltero SL that was made to specs of the early U.S. Solteros. He didn't know if the neck was a 'V' but he said the body was thin. I called a buddy in Tampa and he hadn't heard of it.
Well, it turns out all my prayers were answered this week. There was one Soltero SL left in Tampa. But this wasn't any SL, it was the finish I wanted (trans amber). If that's not cool enough, it's the mythical thin body Soltero SL.
So here is the Soltero SL that's on it's way to me -
I haven't owned a Dean in a few decades now, and am really interested in the Palomino because (1) I like P90 pups and (2) my music has been trending more in the direction of classic blues, light jazz, and jazz-oriented pop. It is also a good looking guitar, IMHO. But there are no stores in my area that stock them. There is a store that will order one for me, and let me return it for full credit in 30 days if I don't like it.
Before I get my hands on it, I'd like to ask if there are any Palomino owners out here in "Dean land", and how they like their guitars. Do they need any mods to play really well? Are there any specific problems with them?
Personally, I like a pretty low action and sustained notes. I like a fairly clean tone, even at high gain settings on my Mesa amp -- as opposed to "mush".
I'd appreciate any advice you all might have for me.
Thanks in advance.
Got my first 7 string! Gauge suggestions?
Hey guys I just got my Schecter C-7 Blackjack ATX \m/ \m/
I am planning on staying in B standard mostly and possibly dropping it a half step or even a full step.
I did some searches and have read somewhere that schecter uses 10-46 on their 6 stringers and then a 56 for the low B. The 10-46 feels fine to me cause I have always used 10-46 on my sixer but the 56 feels a little sloppy to me. I have read on other forums people suggesting 60-64 or somewhere around there for the low B.
I sold my only six string guitar so I now only play the seven stringer so I am open to switching all the other strings too if it would balance out better.. Maybe 11-48 with a 60-64 for the low B?
I would like to get a ballpark idea of where I should start with string gauge because this thing buzzes like crazy and I would like to get the string gauge close to where I want it before I worry about setting the guitar all up. Maybe switching to the lower strings will fix the buzz right up without having to adjust the neck.
I find it odd that the guitar buzzes because so many people have said they have been setup perfect right out of the factory. I played another C-7 Blackjack ATX that got shipped back due to some flaws and it also buzzed like crazy.
NAD! New Amp Day!! \m/, (>_<) ,\m/
Picked this amp and cab up from ebay for a great price, especially considering they are quite hard to trace in England.
