What do you guys think?...
by Anonymous on Sun Feb 01, 2009 6:17 am
Hey, I wrote this new...thing, lol not really a song so much as riffs sortof put together, but it's coming along I guess. I just wanted some outsider opinions?

It's called Dark Malicious Song.
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=913715

I've had the initial riff (the first heavy part in the song) for a while, and hadn't really done much with it, and after a few horus of recording and mixing, got this.

Fretboard Logic Anyone?
by shupe13 on Sun Feb 01, 2009 3:16 pm
I've owned many guitars over the years, Gibsons, Jacksons, you name it. Never a Dean until now (my loss). I can't lie, many of the guitars I'd owned were a direct reflection of my musical interest at the time. I owned the guitar that my current idol had. Well, believe it or not, it didn't help me to play any better. New guitars gave me new motivation, short lived motivation.

What I'm getting at is this. I plan to buckle down and learn the instrument. I look at all the different books and things and honestly they are confusing to me. Has anyone here used FRETBOARD LOGIC? If so, how is it? Is it the bomb or another gimic? Its kinda pricey... Understand, I know discipline is a key factor and I'm gonna exercise it. Know of something better?

If I were to get a new amp, (Not that I am any time soon)
by Carlstrmm on Sun Feb 01, 2009 4:35 pm
If I were to get a new amp, preferably something loud and a head+cab, what should I get? I am most definately NOT getting another ampsoon, but I want to sort of plan for the future. (and im REALLY tired of my Line 6 Spider III. Makes me feel like I just started playing guitar.)

Im into heavy metal, but I mean whenever they say "this is a heavy metal tone" most of the time its just like a rock n roll-ish black sabbath tone.
What I want like a newer metal sounding tone, like a metalcore / Death metal-ish / Machine head like tone.
Heavy stuff. Like real heavy stuff.
Also, I would want to stay on the cheeper side. Even though i know any good Head + Cab will cost you a leg and a ballsack.

Any suggestions?

BBE Sonic Maximizer (And the Stomp Box Version)
by SkinnyMan on Sun Feb 01, 2009 5:38 pm
Hmm, so I've been having trouble finding my tone with this 5150. It may need new tubes or something, as it is all original, bought in '98... but really, whenever I try getting a tone out of it, it ends up too harsh, and piercing, or too bassy and muddy.

I'm really wondering about this BBE Sonic Maximizer. I can pick one up maybe next week or so. But I'd really like to know if it is worth the hype, and if it would fix my problem!

Thanks party people in the place to be. Laughing
Buying a guitar from E-Bay...
by Greg... on Sun Feb 01, 2009 6:35 pm
Hiya,

I've seen a RBV Standard on Ebay, can anyone think of any good questions that I can ask the seller?

So far I've got...

Has the guitar got any minor scratches/blemishes?

How long have you had this guitar?

Why are you selling it?

Is it in a smoke-free environment?

Have you ever gigged with the guitar?

Is the Floyd Rose in good condition, for example, are the knife edges worn/damaged?

Is the locking nut worn?

Thanks!

by Nightrain on Sun Feb 01, 2009 7:05 pm
I'm having a Custom 7 string V made for me But have a hard time choosing which color for Body and Graphics.
The shape of the guitar is very pointy and the theme is going to match my Nocturnal ways.
It will have for graphics the gothic symbol for Vampire (which is in my Avatar) It will be located where the neck pup would be and on the upper wing it will have Chinese lettering for Vampire. The symbol will also be on the headstock and Headstock will be painted to match body color.

I was thinking Black for the base color and either white or red graphics. Or White for the base color with red graphics. Which do you guys think would look best?

I'm a big fan of like, Ibanez Destroyers, Explorers, Icemans...but I'm looking for some really cool stuff, like Hamer Scarabs, or crazy guitars from the 80s.
Also, I'm pretty old school, so no death/black metal guitars.

Very good music in the anime series "Bubblegum Crisis&q
by Blazer on Sun Feb 01, 2009 10:25 pm
Bubblegum Crisis 2032 was a series from the eighties that followed the adventures of four women mechanised warriors who fought against rogue robots and the company that produced those robots. That doesn't really sound like much of a plot but it was one of those key series on which movies like "The Matrix" were based on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8y0AlftKEQ
The original 1985 trailer for the series.

Under anime effectionado's BGC 2032 is ranked as one of the most action filled anime series ever while also showing human elements. But what makes this series of real interrest to us as Dean forum members is that it had a KILLER soundtrack. Leadcharacter "Priss" is a rock singer and her voice actress is a well known Japanese singer and many of the songs from the BGC 2032 soundtrack have charted in Japan.

"Konya wa Hurricane" (Tonight there's a Hurricane)
The opening song from the first episode, the footage sets the standard on what the series was all about.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmTsXrqlp7o
"Mad machine" from the second episode "Born to kill"
No footage this time, because in the episode the song cuts out when the guitar solo starts and that's a shame because that solo is an absolute highlight in the soundtrack of this series. No footage, just the song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inMPOUu8s_4
"Kizudarake No Wild" ( Wild and scarred)
The only ballad from the BGC soundtrack from the fourth episode but as one can tel by the footage even that song was set to a very hefty episode which was about extortion and murder.
Just saw Slipknot last night!
by Clayman515 on Sun Feb 01, 2009 11:01 pm
So like the title, says, I just saw Slipknot last night at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Unfortunately, I missed Trivium. I made it in about 15 minutes before Coheed came on, but I don't really care for them.

This was by far the best concert I've ever been to. Slipknot was flawless. They played a bunch of their older stuff that they haven't played in years, so that was pretty cool.

I got some videos on my phone but they look like crap, so I just stole someone else's that was there.

by classic_rocker978 on Mon Feb 02, 2009 5:39 am
Okay Im lookin at the different teles. They dont seem to have a great deal of different models.

I was wondering. If i plan on stripping down most of the hardware and replacing it with GFS stuff does it really matter if Im gonna get the STL50 (bit over $100) or the $200-300 version of it. All I'm really paying for is the body and the neck. (I might swap the neck out for a mighty mite) I wanna do an "Age' vintaged look on it. Get some of that cheap lacquer off.

*Edit* I guess I could get one of their 3 piece unpainted alder bodies. But im not so good with the paint so itd havta be a natural finish lol.

ISP Decimator. Wall of text incoming.
by Spite on Mon Feb 02, 2009 11:20 am
Okay, I finally recieved the Decimator this morning.
When I first plugged it into my combo amp I was impressed. I ran it in front of it, since my combo does not have a loop. I messed around with the knob a bit, and found a sweet spot. Now, in the mean time I had powered up my VK head. I've read in a previous post of mine, that to get rid of the high gain buzz, I should run it last in the chain in the loop. I tried that, but in order to get rid of the buzz, I had to turn the knob across 12, thus killing my sound completly. I was running at low volume at the time, though.
Does the volume of the amp have any effect on where I'd set the knob on my decimator?
I tried again and again to make it right, but then eventually I tried running it in front of the amp instead, which instantly gave me great results.
So my question is, what did I do wrong?
Does it vary from amp to amp, where the better spot in the chain is?
Whats the best choice?

My question is this: Does anyone have 'live' pictures of it? Maybe from Namm? Or has anyone seen it in person and can tell me about the quality?

And some general Soltero std info? I have no money for a real USA, so is this the next best thing? Or should I look towards another model or type? Is it like heavy and sturdy like a Gibson LP [just so I can compare it to something]?

Good news for Dean tremolo users!
by deanmaniac on Mon Feb 02, 2009 11:47 pm
Hey! If you have an Icon or an Avalanche with the Dean floating two post tremolo, this is what you need! And the fix is CHEAP!!!
The cheapo stock die cast trem block on these bridges break easily, I've broken four or five of them. I really like the stock trem, but when they break, I have replaced them with Floyds. Now you can improve the stock trem with these steel trem blocks from GuitarFetish.com You will need to get their USA 10/32" thread trem bar, the stocker won't fit, but the trem plate screws right on this thing, and the improvement in feel and sustain is way better than a Floyd. While your at it, get their Wilkinson EZ Lock Tuners, and you won't need a Floyd at all. My Icons will now be my most used guitars again!! These things sustain like a Les Paul, no $hit! Overdrives for lead boosts?
by Mr. Fraggle Stick on Tue Feb 03, 2009 4:34 am
So I was wondering what the advantages of overdrives are when put infront of your amp for solos and leads, as alot of guitarists I know use them for a little boost. And what overdrive would you guys recommend if you have any knowledge of boosting with an overdrive for leads? Does Dean do this?
by zoastev on Tue Feb 03, 2009 4:40 am
I want to know if I can get a Plain ol Razorback (same features like all of the other pickups, set neck, floyd, etc), but with any paint job i choose of, for example, I want a Black Razorback with maybe dark blue bevels and blue lightning bolts, or holoflash lightning bolts

Does Dean take those kind of orders? I want to be the only one with that custom paint job.

If not, then can I buy a Razorback with all of the parts but with no paint/finish on it at all? so that way I can do it myself or have someone do it here

Please help out
I want less brootalz out of my amp
by milje on Tue Feb 03, 2009 5:42 am
I'm wanting to change my general tone, right now I have my Peavey going kinda balls out (as balls out as you can get with a Valveking and a MXR 10 band).

I'm playing less heavy metal and more rock/80's metal. Scorpions, Van Halen, stuff like that. Anyone wanna give me a few pointers on setting my EQ to be less brootalz? I want something smoother that won't scare the chicks away (I do that enough by myself). I really don't keep my gain way up as it is, like 5 or so, I'm not sure where to start in EQing this. Everything I try ends up being too heavy for what I'm going for.

dead tube = less gain?
by Serbusfish on Tue Feb 03, 2009 10:35 am

Stoner/Doom Effects Help
by higgins666 on Tue Feb 03, 2009 11:00 am
ok, so me & my guitarist have been getting the need to expand from the deathy, thrashy, southerny metal were playing to add a stoner/doom feel to it, what pedals are advisable to use?

currently weve got

Guitar: Blackstar Dist-X ->Weeping Demon -> Boss Digital Delay

Bass: Digitech Synth Wah -> Big Muff -> Modded MXR Chorus -> Modded MXR Flanger

im thinking phasers, reverbs or delays for the bass & flangers, choruses, tremolos, phasers & other random stuff for the guitar.

any help would be appreciated.
Boss PSA question.

Today I went out and bought a powersupply for my Decimator.
I got the Boss PSA-230P. On the decimator it says 9V DC adaptors, but on the Boss it says AC Adaptor on the box, looking at the plug it says the following:
Pri: AC 230V ~ 50Hz 6W
Sec: DC 9V = 200mA
I'm assuming this means im good to go, but had to be sure.
Dont want to short my Decimator.

Bonnaroo 2009 Lineup Announced
by metalmessiah17 on Tue Feb 03, 2009 5:52 pm
Just got announced today. Here's a link:

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/upcoming_tours/bonnaroo_announces_2009_lineup.html

I was initially pretty unimpressed, but now that I see the full list, I'm fairly sure I'll be going again. Phish, Beastie Boys, NIN, The Mars Volta, Gov't Mule, Bela Fleck, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Down and Kaki King. That alone justifies the cost for me. I'm sure there'll be plenty of other bands that I just wander to and end up liking. Last year I ended up listening to a lot of the bluegrass bands, and let me tell you, nothing quite as awesome as seeing a bluegrass band play "Crazy Train" Shocked Twisted Evil .

Anyone else planning on going? Lewnworx was there last year (walked right by me and neither of us even realized it Laughing ), any chance you're planning on going again? It was a great time, and I think it would be great if a few of us could meet up during some of the slower points of the day.

Jon Schaffer's tone REVEALED!!!
by sasquatchv03 on Tue Feb 03, 2009 9:23 pm
Alright, everyone. As you all may or may not know, Jon Schaffer is my absolute favorite guitarist and is one of the biggest influences on my style, tone, and sound. I recently made a grand discovery that has truly opened a whole new world to me. I discovered Jon Schaffer's tone. The only bad news (for some) is that it is his tone on the Framing Armageddon and Crucible of Man albums that I have found. The Splawn Quickrod. I heard an interview with Jon Schaffer http://www.captaint.com/talkingmetal/talkingmetaleps153.mp3 in which he states that the Splawn Quickrod, out of the box, is the closest sounding amp to his Larry. Unfortunately, what he doesn't mention is that it is the closest to the third channel (the Marshall on steroids channel). With my old Quickrod, with no pedals of any sort, I was able to nail the tone on those two albums; not even .0001% of a difference in tone. I tried the amp boosted, and it can come somewhat close to the tones on Horror Show and Something Wicked...but it's still not as high gain or compressed as those tones. I hope this helps anyone else who is a die-hard Schaffer or Iced Earth fan. Just felt like sharing because I know that amongst Rhythm guitarists, Schaffer's tone is highly coveted and can be very tricky to replicate.
Spider Valve Modification?
by deathgrind on Tue Feb 03, 2009 10:03 pm
I was looking on craigslist today and found a product that claims to give your Spider Valve even more of a tube feel. Its a replacment preamp section that uses an analog converter with a tube instead of the digital converter the Spider Valve comes stock with. I might pick it up. Anyone else have a Spider Valve?

4 Albums from Hevy Devy in 2009!
by rridner on Tue Feb 03, 2009 10:30 pm
yeah, 4 records.

An Appetizer, 2 meals and a desert.

Ki is the appetizer...heavy chill. I start the next one the day
after...then the next will be the symphony, then an ambient album.

mmmm...

Tentatively, Ki is the mellow-ish intro to the story (a very pointed
theme though, it's unnerving)

Addicted is the next one, heavy, fun and dance-y ...I like good choruses
and dancing.

Deconstruction is a treat for the syl and ziltoid fans...(and then
some...damn...it's smurfing nuts.)

The ambient album, (sand theme) will close it off.

All under dtp

Ki is pretty much done. Going away to do addicted...(Nepal?)
Deconstruction is done, just needs the orchestra. Ambient will be a
collection of improv.
a thrift store find
by Dr. Frankenstein on Tue Feb 03, 2009 11:01 pm
Ok, today my girlfriend were outdoing some shopping for the new place we're gonna be moving into soon, anyways, we were in this thrift store and right before we were about to leave, I mosey on over to the electronics section and I find a gently used Vesta Fire MR-10 Multitrack recorder. It seems easyy enough to use and as soon as I get some blank tapes I'll find out, Oh and here's the kicker, I only paid 6 bucks for it. Tis is the same store I found my Checkmate Combo Amp in. So I'm pretty happy, have more than one way to record my music now. Very Happy Very Happy
Graphite, Bone, or Synthetic?
by SkinnyMan on Tue Feb 03, 2009 11:11 pm
Ok, so I'm buying a blank nut, since this tech does a "bring your own nut kinda thing" and I'd like to make sure it is one that I want.

Stew Mac doesn't carry 1/4 Blank Graphite Nuts, but I can look at other stores if this one is most reccomended.

Stew Mac DOES carry White Tusq, Slipstone Delrin, and Bone Nuts in a 1/4 Size, blank.

So I'm wondering. I'm going to give them the old nut to model the new one off of, in terms of E to E spacing, but I want it higher with a tad deeper cuts, instead of low with thin cuts to the top. Basically, I just want a finely crafted nut, that will help me hold tune.

I'm leaning towards bone right now, but I wanted to ask you guys. Surprised

Thanks!

Dean Guitars Music Business Seminar USA Factory Tour, Tampa FL

THURSDAY FEB. 19th, 2pm to 5pm, Tampa, FL
Dean Guitars Music Business DIY Summit and USA Factory Tour with Martin Atkins, Josh Maloney, and Curse Mackey

In conjunction with Martin Atkins and Tour:Smart, Dean Guitars will be hosting an exclusive DIY summit and factory tour. Dean will be opening its doors to 50 lucky attendees looking to learn more about the music business and how to survive what looks to be the worst economic downturn in half a century. Dean has chosen Martin Atkins to present his unique strategies for survival in the music industry.

Martin Atkins, most recognized for work as owner of Invisible Records, author of Tour:Smart, and for his involvement in the Chinese music scene as well as his work with bands such as Public Image Limited, Pigface, The Damage Manual, Killing Joke, Ministry, and Nine Inch Nails, Martin has been a catalyst in numerous global music scenes - from the UK Punk scene of the late 70s and early 80s to the beginnings of Chicago's industrial music revolution to the emerging Beijing music explosion.

In addition to Martin's presentation, Josh Maloney - Director of Dean's USA Custom Shop and Artist Relations - has been kind enough to offer his insight into the rarely discussed business of building relationships with instrument makers into sponsorships.

Artist, entrepreneur, curator, and Dean's Director of Marketing, Curse Mackey, will also speak about bridging the gap between art and business - and why it is so important to maintain multiple revenue streams in an increasingly unstable economy.

After the seminar, attendees will have a rare opportunity to see the inner workings of Dean's guitar manufacturing facilities in a tour conducted by Josh Maloney.

Space is limited to 50 attendees, and slots will be assigned on a first-come-first-serve basis to musicians, bands, managers, DJ's, talent buyers, music retailers and those actively seeking a career in the music business only.

Agenda will cover:
Josh Maloney: Securing and maintaining artist/sponsor relationships
Curse Mackey: Bridging the gap between art and business - building and maintaining multiple revenue streams
Martin Atkins: State of industry

LP to Soltero
by Delanoir on Wed Feb 04, 2009 5:59 am
Alright, I was wondering how the Soltero compared in build/tone/feel/etc. to the Les Paul (of comparable quality).

Obviously, Gibson's are pretty marked up in price. But these two guitars have an obviously similar shape and build spec. They're both set-necked guitars with mahogany necks and bodies with 22 frets on a rosewood (or in some cases, ebony) fretboard.

At the risk of sounding completely clueless, what are some of the main differences in these guitars?
It's my Birthday!

Yeah, it's my Birthday!

I was born the day after "The Day the Music Died"... yeah I'm that old.

It's Alice Cooper's birthday too, but he's even older then me.

You know the sound an old fridge makes when it's making ice?

I sound like that just sitting on the sofa.

I don't need drugs to get a spaced out feeling either, I just stand up quickly...

This is the year I get to yell "Get off my lawn!" - I'm kind'a looking forward to that.
Roland Cube amp settings
by Jimmy King on Wed Feb 04, 2009 1:43 pm
So, I've got a Cube 20X and I've had a hell of a time getting a decent tone out of it. It always sounded like I had a big old blanket over the speakers. I turned down the gain, I turned down the bass, I turned up mids and highs, etc. Finally, last night I took it over to a friend's house who has been playing guitar far longer to let him have a go at it. After some tweaking, he did get it to clear up and quit sounding so muffled, but the settings are not at all what I would have expected and seem a bit strange compared to what people tend to discuss on here for other amps. So, here are what I've got right now. It's a decent hard rock tone, maybe not quite there for metal but it'll do for bedroom playing. It's a bit trebley for my taste.
Is this at all similar to what anyone else with a Cube has to use?

Bass: 6 o'clock
Mid: 6 o'clock
Treble: 3 o'clock
Gain: 9-10 o'clock

One the gain starts pushing eleven, the sound goes right to hell and gets all muffled sounding. Similarly, if I turn up the mids or bass significantly more than where they currently are I get muffled crap. I haven't turned the treble down lower to see if/when it starts crapping out yet. The problem is definitely the amp and not the pickups, the thing sounds great on other amps with more normal settings.

...an AGILE custom shop Hornet!!
I wasn't gonna tell you until it was done, but i couldn't keep it for that long!

This one will be done in july, hopefully i can pick up one of the new Schenker flames V before Razz

Spec as follow:
-Hornet body style
-Mahagony body
-Mahagony 1 piece neck/neck through construction
-Flame Maple top
-24 frets/24.75 scale
-Ebony board with MOP block inlays
-Cream binding on neck and headstock
-Tone pros string through bridge
-EMG 81/60 (gonna get blackouts, but that wasn't an option)
-Input jack on upper wing like Jackson king v/Dean vmnt
-2 vol 1 tone, toggle switch NO PICKGUARD like on the regular Hornets

This is the finnish i chose:
Image
And for you who dont know what a regular Hornet looks like, it's the one in the middle, it's sized between the Jackson king v/vmnt and the ESP mustaine series.
Image

This will be an awsome regular tuning guitar, and then i can drop tune my vmnt! Very Happy

Floyd/Kahler/string though/stopbar, playability wise...
by Darth Jester on Wed Feb 04, 2009 11:37 pm
There are some differences when it comes to playability depending on what kind of bridge and saddle the guitar has. For me Floyd Rose feels the best, obviously with the locking nut which gives the strings a tighter feel. I really don't like string through guitars, they feels so soft. I don't use the Floyd, ever, there's no bar screwed in on my guitars, but I gotta have it, even though it's a mofo to adjust at times, guitars with Floyd just feel so right...

How about you, do you have a preference, or does it really matter to you?

Or have you ever even noticed a difference....... and don't care

Lets Beat the Effects Pedal Order thing to DEATH.
by Graunke on Thu Feb 05, 2009 6:55 pm
So I'm setting up my Pedal Board. What order do you typically place the effects in?

example: Here is what I'm using currently.

Slash Wah, ZW OD, Chorus, Roto Vibe, Delay.

My guess would be this order:

Axe---->OD->Wah->Rotovibe->Chorus->Delay ----->Amp

If I was going to have a noise suppresor, that would go right in front of the Delay? Do I have my modulation effects in the right spot?

Building two matching Pine body telecasters
by Blazer on Thu Feb 05, 2009 11:52 pm
Well a couple of weeks ago I decided to get rid of stuff I have lying around and made an inventory of what I can use for a new build and came up with this.

- A Birdseye maple tele neck with a rosewood fingerboard
- A plain maple Strat neck with maple cap fingerboard
- A gold cover Humbucker from a Les Paul Custom
- A Dimarzio Super distortion humbucker
- Two chrome Fender style hard tail bridges, one toploading the other for string through body construction.
- Two sets of Cast sealed tuners, one for each neck.
- Two chrome humbucker rings.

So with that I decided to build two matching pine body Teles which if all goes well will look like this.
Image

So with that in mind I started work two weeks ago on the bodies.
Image
The second body during the routing

Image
The two bodies

Image
This would've been the body for the tele neck

Image
And this would've been the one for the strat neck.

I eventually decided to drop the idea of using the necks I had lying around and instead opted to made the necks from scratch, also when talking to Jack T Ripper, our second guitarist, he asked me if it were possible to give the guitars 24 fret necks and I found no reason why it shouldn't be possible. It also makes that I have to give the guitars a Gibson 24, 1/5 scale length.

Image
One of the necks while the glue was setting.

Image
And here's the neck after the glue dried and I planed it. This particullar neck was made from rest pieces of other necks we made, it consists of three main pieces of Birds eye maple, two layers of rosewood veneer, two layers of maple veneer and two layers of lacewood veneer, the effect as you can tell is striking, this will be a KILLER neck.

Image
As for work on the bodies, I finished routing the neck pockets....

Image
...and started work on the routing of the electronics compartment.

Image
And off we go....

Image
Slow and steady wins the race

Image
And routing a pocket to recess the backplate so it looks and feels smooth.

Image
Finished

Image
Time to whip out the grain filler.

Image
For both bodies of course.

Image
And here's how they look after the first sanding when the filler has set.

Image
And from behind too of course

Dimebucker
by Dr. Frankenstein on Fri Feb 06, 2009 1:06 am
So I got the Dimebucker in the mail today(Thanks Chris! Very Happy ) And right away I set off to install it into the Vendetta, setting the mystery pickup aside for future projects. I left the Washburn Pickup in the neck position, I definitely should have sound clips up later tonight on my myspace page, she sounds killer. Alittle thinner than the other pup, but the notes are more defined, and I can still get a killer crunch out of her. I think I'll turn my mids up a little bit on the amp and swoop out the highs a bit less. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

by classic_rocker978 on Fri Feb 06, 2009 5:03 am

Mark knopfler... gilmour... those kinda tones. I play through a strat and occasionally my les paul. Which speakers would you guys recommend.

-Smooth top end but dont want a blanket over the speaker type sound

-Smooth creamy midrange

-Big fat bottom end

I was kinda thinking g12h60 and a vintage 30 clones from warehouseguitarspeakers.com

Any other good speaker choices that wont break the bank?

Stolen guitar seen on eBay leads to arrest of suspects
Friday, February 06, 2009
BY LESLIE KWOH
Star-Ledger Staff

Roselle Park police have unraveled at least part of the mystery behind a string of guitar thefts that has plagued central Jersey in recent months, after discovering one of the stolen instruments for sale on eBay.

The advertised guitar was one of three taken last week when five masked bandits entered an unlocked Roselle Park apartment, beat up two of the residents, and made a beeline for the instruments, worth about $7,000, police said.

Investigators said yesterday they have identified several of the burglars involved in the incident, all male juveniles from New Jersey, but would not specify how many, according to Roselle Park police Sgt. Manuel Jimenez.

The three guitars were among nearly a dozen stolen since November during six separate burglaries in Roselle Park, Summit and Montclair. In all, the stealing spree netted more than $11,000 worth of guitars with brand names like Fender, Gretsch, Ibanez, Martin, Schecter and Squire.

Authorities have not determined whether the guitar thefts are connected, or whether the Roselle Park suspects were involved in the other burglaries, but noted it was unusual to see such a high incidence in such a short period of time.

"It's just very strange," Jimenez said.

The three guitars taken in the Roselle Park burglary -- a Schecter Diamond series, a Gretsch Tennessee Rose and a Gretsch Black Falcon -- were recovered Monday after a relative of one of the victims spotted a photo of one of the stolen guitars on the online auction site eBay, police said.

With bids already reaching well over $1,000, he contacted the seller to express interest in seeing the instrument, said the relative, who, fearing retribution, asked not to be identified. The seller agreed to a meeting and described two other guitars that were also available for viewing. The descriptions matched the other two stolen guitars, the relative said.

On Monday, Roselle Park officers visited the seller, a legitimate Lakewood business that specializes in buying and selling items on eBay, and recovered the instruments, Jimenez said. Detectives concluded they had unknowingly purchased the stolen loot from the suspects several days earlier. After reviewing surveillance videos, police were able to identify the suspects, he said.

"Technology is actually what helped solve the case," Jimenez said. "Between the internet and surveillance video, that helped us solve the case."

Meanwhile, Montclair authorities are still investigating four incidents during which burglars pilfered three Fender electric guitars, valued between $200 and $600, along with a 1961 Martin electric and two Ibanez bass electrics, worth $2,600. In Summit, police are searching for the thieves who broke into a house while its residents were sleeping and made off with a Fender Musicmaster bass, a Squire Telecaster and a Fender amplifier -- valued at a total of $850.

The three police departments have been in contact to investigate whether the incidents are linked, Jimenez said, but "so far, the only common thread is guitars."

Im only going to play extended range instruments, which means my jackson is soon to be up for sale, money going towards a RC7x/Razor 255 7.

also ive recently started saving up for 2 new guitars,

Ibanez Universe (played on a mates and it was amazing)
Esp Ltd SC-608B (played on a 8 string earlier in the year and love it)

i hope dean produces more extended range instruments, even if there just baritones, i think dean might be missing out on the extended range bug thats going round alot of circles.

The hunt is on...
by Blind Theory on Fri Feb 06, 2009 10:13 pm
Well, I like to do my research before buying a new piece of gear. My birthday is in about 4 months. I usually start my research at 6 months but I was too caught up in my personal life for that. Some of you may say, "whoa, Blind Theory, Why 4 months?" Well, I dont like getting ripped off so I do my research as far ahead of time as possible. I did this with my Dave Mustaine VMNTX and it is an amazing guitar. I would expect no less from this. Over the next 4 months, expect a ton of questions from me about certain things whether they be amps, pedals, guitars, or even recording gear. Now, you may be asking why I wrote this. Well, I'll tell you why...I am going to ask my first set of questions.
1) Has anyone played the Jackson KVX10 King V? If so, how is it?
2) Are the Dean Caddillacs any good? The imports that are around $500.
3) Is the Marshall half-stack with the MG100DFX head and the 412 slant cab any good?
4) I hear good things about Agile and I want a 7 string guitar. I was wondering, anyone with experience with Agile 7's, are they good for the money ($450-550)? The ones with the Floyds, are the Floyds good?

If you just want to chime in then feel free to do so. Please no negative comments (not that I think there will be any, it is just that time of year). Thanks for your help and expect plenty more questions!
Thanks,
BT
2 Solteros OR Cadillac + Soltero
by Jag Panzer on Fri Feb 06, 2009 10:26 pm
I'm having a tough time deciding which 2 guitars to take to Italy. I've got 3 flight cases - 2 Soltero cases and 1 Caddy case.

So the debate is whether to take 2 Solteros or take 1 Soltero and 1 Caddy.

The Caddy is more popular with the audience thanks to the more radical shape. It also has the classic Dean headstock.

But having 2 Solteros means that switching back and forth between the 2 guitars would be totally seamless. I wouldn't have to adjust to the other guitar.

It's a tough call.

BTW, the 2 Solteros I would take would be the Vintage Twotone and my cherry SL. I wouldn't take my US Spalted on the road.

Just recently bought a jc-qm jumbo dean acoustic-electric with maroon finish. I really love it. However, I am going nuts trying to find a gig bag that doesn't cost a mint. I emailed Dean and they were nice and said that they didn't have a gig bag for that model.

So, any suggestions?

Question regarding the 79 MLFs vs. other MLs
by Trendkiller96 on Sat Feb 07, 2009 3:28 am
Okay a while ago I bought an LTD EC-1000 and immediately felt the difference of a much thinner neck after having been used to a 79 MLF for so long. Now I find it INCREDIBLY difficult to go back to the MLF, I just have such an easier time on the smaller Eclipse neck.

So my question is, are all MLF necks as wide and thick as the 79s? Cause if there are ones that are more comparable to the Eclipse I'd love to grab one of those. Thanks.

happy day!
by rridner on Sat Feb 07, 2009 5:19 am
so, after a long wait - my Moser is back up n running. I swapped the EMGs for Blackouts a while back and didn't care for either. actives are not my bag. I think if my only guitar had actives or all my guitars had em, I could deal. but since the passive loaded guitars out numbered the active ones - I could not handle the back n forth transition. so, I made a deal to get me some passives and get rid of the SD Blackouts. being the tard that I am - I right away took out the Blackouts and removed all the pots, wiring, etc - leaving my Moser unplayable. after some minor setbacks, I got the pups I wanted - SD FullShred Neck/SD Invader Bridge. during the waiting for my pups, I decided I would pursue a new bridge for the guitar as well. the Floyd in there was ok, but was odd (the way it was constructed). Got the guitar all wired up last wk and started getting impatient on waiting for the new Floyd. I purchased it on 1/20 and it just showed up today - ridiculous, huh? to make things worse, its a speedloader - which is fine in itself....but I have no experience w/ this style of Floyd. needless to say it kind of threw me off. my 1st thought was "where are the string retainers?!?!?!" upon further inspection - "ohh....its a speedloader. would have been nice if the Ebay listing had mentioned that!!!!" well, this is getting rather long.....I think this is actually the longest thread I have ever made/typed. Laughing

so, to end this novel.....I am really happy w/ the decision to go back to passives in this guitar - it works well for me. if you ever wanna try either the FullShred or Invader...do it! they rule - especially together. trying out the Skull Strings on my Moser as well - really great for drop tunings. thanks Ant_101 Wink

by what-a-cool-username on Sat Feb 07, 2009 3:45 pm
Hey guys, thought I'd post up an idea for a fun game. I was mucking about earlier and decided to play my phone number, and it actually sounded half decent. So I thought I'd post the idea up here.
Say my phone number was 657-9876 - I could play 6th fret low E, 5th fret A string and so on.
The rules are as follows:
1. It has to be YOUR phone number, noone elses - doesn't matter if it's your house phone or cell phone.
2. You can play the numbers in chords, single notes or whatever but the numbers must be in the order they are in your phone number.
3. You can only play the numbers in your phone number, no addons.
4. You can add effects and harmonize if you wish, but it must still be recognisable.
5. No prank calls from anyone with a good enough ear to figure out the phone number Laughing

Here's my go:

Try it out and post em up!

Made even cooler by the fact that all Gibson seems to want to do these days, are reversed or upside down shapes.

Gibson specs say the Fretboard is Rosewood but it damn sure looks and feels like ebony to me. The EMG's are factory.

ML Dilema
by mahly on Sat Feb 07, 2009 6:04 pm
OK, I have a Schecter C-1 (see sig) and a Dean 30th anniversary ML (again, refer to the sig you just looked at LOL)

I LOVE the looks of the ML, but even though it's much more comfortable to play (even sitting) than I thought it would be, it still just isn't "part of me" like my C-1 is. I even added another strap knob to try to balance it out better (was a bit ummm...what would you call it? HEAD heavy? seemed like I had to hold the neck up or it wanted to tip down.)

Being that I am NOT a very good guitar player yet, I wonder if this can/is affecting my learning (distraction...developing bad habits?).

I LOVE the look of it (though the AT3000 ALMOST makes me want to trade over...but that wouldn't help my situation at the moment) and it sounds and plays (action, feel of the neck size/shape to my hands) GREAT. It's just that my C-1 (and presumably anything in a similar shape...i.e. Vendetta 4.0) feels like I am one with the guitar...it's very stable when sliding chords, and perfectly balanced.
I'm also NOT a fan of the headstock, as the wierd string angles make tuning a PIA!

So here's the dilema:

1) Keep the ML, you'll get used to it eventually. Suck it up!
2) Trade it for another double cut (Vendetta 4.0/3.0)
3) Trade it for a V (VMNT) or Z as they might balance out better
4) Trade it for a AT3000 (the carved top will feel more like your carved top C-1)

NOTE: this is a "B stock" 30th ML so it's not worth the same as an "A stock" but the flaw is VERY minor and your can't feel it at all (imperfection in the black edge paint under the clear coat about the size of a q-tip head) so it's not like a chip or anything.

Again, I DO love the look of the ML...but does the slight difference in function out weigh the beautiful form?

Moving away from the POD XT Live (great unit for what it is) and starting a Pedal Board. Already have

Wampler SuperPlextortion
Skreddy lunar module (fuzz)
MXR 10 band EQ

MXR EVH Phaser
Keely Compressor
And maybe a EVH Flanger (don't use flanger much)

Any other suggestions or different brands then I'm considering? Thanks
Slanted cab vs Straight front cab
by '87 sherwood on Sat Feb 07, 2009 9:23 pm

Double New Guitar Weekend. NDC.
by BradWorld on Sun Feb 08, 2009 1:08 am
This has been a great weekend so far. Had a great gig last night, and just picked up two new Made in USA guitars.

First up is a 1996 Fender Deluxe American Strat. This guitar was in virtually unplayed condition. For a thirteen year old guitar, there was not a scratch on it. It has the lace pickups which are noise free and sound really good. The locking Shaller tuners and the Floyd Rose locking Strat bridge are very nice touches. Combined with the roller nut, I would imagine the tremolo would be very stable and stay in tune. The neck is incredibly smooth, and the fret work is top notch. I am enjoying playing this one...

The finish is a royal blue transparent finish that is bursted into an opaque blue around the edges. So it is almost like a subtle blueburst when you look at it closely. Very nice wood.

Image

Up next is a 1979 Gibson SG. Its the model called "The SG". The combination of features on this guitar really called out to me, and I had to have it. Top of the list is the ebony board, which is smooth as glass, and feels like a million bucks. The body is made of Walnut, which has a really nice full sound. The three piece neck construction is very solid. Unlike SGs with mahogony necks, the pitch doesnt change that much when you pull back on the neck. And the jack location on this model was moved to the side of the guitar, which in my opinion is much better than on the front like most other SGs. The frets are in great shape for a 30 year old guitar.

Now for that bad parts. This one does not have the original pickups. The pickups that original came on The SG are some of the most highly coveted vintage Gibson pickups on the market. The neck slot had a T-top. The bridge was supposed to have a pickup called the Velvet Brick, which is some type of super high output Dirty Fingers derivative. So this guitar is missing those things. Also, the thing is a little beat up. But it appears to be solid. It plays and sounds good, and it was priced accordingly.

So its been a good weekend so far. With DOA coming up in a few weeks, I think I have to stop reading craigslist and looking on ebay for a while. I think I will avoid the Forum Trading Post as well. Laughing
Amplification Opinions Needed
by FearCage on Sun Feb 08, 2009 1:39 am
Hello,

I was thinking about this a while ago and I can't really come to a conclusion on my own. I'm not the kind of guy that trolls around for gigs at smoke musk-filled bars around town, and that's cool with me. I play as a hobby and for myself only.

With this said, I don't really find it justifiable to go out and spend thousands on a half stack. So, I was thinking about buying a smaller practice amp and some decent studio monitors since I tend to do recording projects at the computer from time to time.

Could I get some recommendations on practice amps as well as some recommendations on some decent monitors?

Thanks,

Shane

Just got back about an hour ago from a 6 day trip. Feels good to be in my own bed for a change. lol Suuuper long days and nights. Oh so one of the supporting bands out with the Barenaked Ladies was a band called Sloan. Patrick the lead guitarist had a killer rig. He was playing a custom Gibson SG into 2 JCM800 heads running stereo into a 1960 slant cab. The right side had a crybaby wah into a Zakk Wylde OD, then a Boss Chorus Ensemble and a Boss Digital Delay. The left side had a ProCo Rat into a Digitech Whammy set on the Detune setting to act as a doubler. You want to talk about KILLER tone? He was sick. It was a total wall of sound.

Guitar Recording Tip...

You guys'll love this.
I've discovered that for recording guitar (or anything, really) if you have the xbox 360 version of rock band, you can use the mic from that. There's no crazy program you need to hack it or anything like that, it just plugs into a standard usb port on your computer. Sounds pretty good as well, depending on mic placement.

Anyone else own one? I picked up two 4x12's that were previously owned by Suffocation, they traded them back in to the owner of Vader, he put new speakers in them and sold them on ebay. I just want to say that for metal tone, these things are flawless. Plus if you're a Suffocation fanatic like me, it's a cool keep sake. I'll quit tooting my own horn now. Very Happy

anyone have one? just curious if they're a good alternative to an actual kit. i've always had an interest in trying to learn the drums, and more so now that i believe learning to play them might help me with rhythm and timing on guitar. problem is i don't have the room to keep a drum kit set up all the time, so i need something that i can move around easily. also, it would probably be for the best to not annoy everyone by banging on a real drum kit.

I did a trade and got this Epiphone Silverburst LP CUstom. It had EMG's in it, and I couldnt dig em. So I replaced all the hardware.

CTS 500k Pots, new Tone Caps, Switchcraft 3 Way, and the PU's are something called Toneriders, I found them on reccomendation from some guitar builders on the ReRanch forums. They sound great, and cost 1/2 of a set of Duncans. I got the set called Generators. They are pretty aggresive. I can't believe how bright and full this guitar sounds now with the 500K pots. The PU's are very responsive, slight roll back on the volume and they clean up very well. If I have time, I will record an audio sample over a backing track later this week.

Finaly got to play an ENGL: Blackmore
by bassmantim71 on Mon Feb 09, 2009 2:34 am
Brief review:

ENGL Blackmore = Shocked

Full review:

So I make the 30 minute trek, with the wife and kids in tow, to my local ENGL dealer. Seems these amps are flying off of the shelf, as for a small shop, he sold 2 Powerballs & his last Fireball this week. I knew about the Fireball, so I didn't bother to bring my Slime with me, I'll go back with my axe in 2 weeks when his new heads show up from Florida. So the dude puts me in this tiny room crammed full of amps, with a seat right in front of the 4 x 12 ENGL cab (not a good idea for the volume I intended to try this thing at). Anyway, I grabs me Dean snow-camo ML, as most of his guitars are active pup, and play the clean channel. Very nice, very nice, notes all had a good chime and were very clear. Perhaps it was the guitar (I'll find out when I go back), but the clean channel didn't blow me away. Don't get me wrong, it was very nice..., but either my expectations were too high about the engl clean sound or the guitar was meh! Still, for now I give the clean channel an 8 on 10.

Switch to dirty..., and Shocked . with all the knobs dialed in at 12 o'clock, I had woken up this monster. It sounded huge with the mids scooped, but when you dial up the mids, it was pure bliss. With the contour button pressed in, the amp was really alive..., a few tweaks of the presence knob, and you can't get a bad sound out of it.

What really blew me away: was the note definition, maybe I was sitting too close to the speakers (no choice in such a small room), but the volume of the individual notes were loud. Fretting a note on the G string was very close in volume and clarity as a power chord..., I have never heard an amp like this before. Palm muted chugging was phenomenal. The amp also sounded great at lowish volume, but be ready..., it's a fcuking loud amp. Dial the volume too low, and you won't hear much..., turn the volume to 1 and it's pretty darn loud.

If you're into looks, the red LEDs and prison bars look very cool.

Anyway, I can't wait to go back and play the Fireball in 2 weeks (when it shows up) with my Slime + not be pressed for time like I was with the family today. If anyone wants a Blackmore ENGL, he is liquidating this thing..., as a customer ordered it, but then walked out with a 6505.

Really digging my Ibanez Artcore AG75BS. I had never owned a full hollow before and the sounds I'm getting, both clean and distorted, are all I ever wanted in a guitar. I really don't understand why the ACH1 and 2 buckers catch so much crap. They go for dead cheap on ebay, many times $30 for the pair! I gotta grab some for future projects. Quick Question
by shupe13 on Mon Feb 09, 2009 10:14 pm
Earlier I was browsing the forum trying to soak up all things Dean and I ran across a thread wanting a limited run of a 24 fret ML. Thinking that would be really cool, I read several of the posts.

Anyway, here's where I'm confused. Why can't a "V" shaped neck have an ebony fretboard? IMO that would be the complete and total s**t! Or is it that an ML can't have a "V" neck profile?

Its completely possible that I didn't fully understand what I was reading.

The thread was started by Plainshift with a post by MZDA on 01 March 2008. Limited Run 24 fret MLF.

I have my below 70 IQ moments.

by Spite on Tue Feb 10, 2009 12:38 am
I'm seriously considering getting myself an X2N in the bridge of my DFH instead of my XL500L.
Now, question is which PU would match it well in the neck.
The stock neck pickup the DFH comes with, to my ears, delivers pretty decent clean tones and creamy licks on my current amp, but I want something with a bit more body and saturation.

Any tips appreciated. Very Happy

The Pink Nightmare

I'm sure you all remember that Harmony strat I bought for a tenner.

Image
which looks pretty much the business on honestly accumulated wear and tear.

But I guess I must have been in one of those phases where I got wild hair up my butt because I got the idea on making this already butt-ugly guitar even uglier. By painting that one pink. I bought the paint to decorate a room for my niece but it never got used.

Image

Image

As you can tell, the pink didn't cover the black up too well and to add more madness I sprayed some random blue on there too before covering the body with random stickers. Then I decided to go Eddie Van Halen and fit a broken pickguard and some gnarly humbucker I had lying around.

The result is very eighties DIY superstrat looking.

Not my best looking effort but a lot of fun.

The Tone Quest - FInding the right bridge pickup
by Delanoir on Tue Feb 10, 2009 7:56 am
Alright, so soon I will be (hopefully) getting a guitar that I've always wanted. It also only has one bridge pickup, and though this is something that doesn't work with a lot of people, it personally doesn't really bother me. I like the character it gives the guitar and tone.

However, I also happen to have become really particular about my tone, and am trying to find one that really works well for me and is characteristic of my playing and what I strive to do. What this means for me is a tone that is really warm, smooth, and creamy, even when overdriven or put through lots of distortion and the like. Now, obviously, the neck pickup is a lot more round in tone than the bridge, which can be pretty bright and raw.

Unfortunately, the world is not perfect, so I can't have everything I want. And, of course, this is why we have more than one guitar (and amp, and pedal, etc). But I'm willing to make sacrifices in order to get as close as I can to what I'm looking for. A very good example of the tone I love is like this, for both rhythm and lead...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91SqLKGIN-A (leads starting at 4:10)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udRYM0z0NeA

But I also tend to use cleans as well, but they tend to follow the same suit as the lead tone, just slightly more tame.

Ideally, the pickup would be something that meet a middle ground inbetween the typical neck and bridge tones. I'm not against actives, but in this case I'm fairly certain I want a passive. The amp also clearly has a huge amount to do with one's tone, but I think you guys get the idea.

The guitar in question has an alder body and maple neck, ebony fretboard. It also has an EMG-PA-2, which provides an output boost on call. I know Michael's guitar is all mahogany, and rosewood, but that's just one factor. Besides, Chris' neck is maple and ebony, too.

Thanks for any and all help. I'm open to pretty much any brands.

Aesthetically speaking. This is my Squier 51/Strat hybrid. 51 body and electronics with an E series Squier MIJ Strat neck. I blacked out all the hardware last year and added vintage Charvel tuners. I drag my pinky a lot while playing and thus get a lot of static so I had removed the stock plastic one. One of my friends from the 51 Modders site sent me this wooden guard he had made for free and I'm psyched about it! On another note I'm having that guy from ebay Bruceweiart make a pickguard for my Artcore that's ebony with this bird on a branch inlaid. He's making it for about $35 shipped! Probably not metal enough for most of you guys though. Smile

So, whats happening is for my spanish class I am doing a ten minute presentation on guitars playing in Spain, including all generes (classical to modern). I am going to bring my guitar in and play stuff while I talk, but am not sure what I should learn. My idea is that I might say that a certin scale or mode is used often in certain spanish music and then play from that scale. However, I am not exactly sure of what I should be playing. I am doing research, but it would be good to have some input from guitarists with experience instead of just wikipedia and all that.

Leather on guitars..
by Vince on Wed Feb 11, 2009 5:36 am
Kinda weird sounding I guess. But I could've sworn I'd seen an ML or something covered in leather. Like, tooled leather pinned onto the guitar front sides and back of the body. Maybe It's just the vision in my head that I'm seeing or something.

Anyways, anyone know of any guitars with leather on em. Maybe leather pickgaurds and such, (besides a leather strap)?

(BTW, I read the "faded denim finish picture request" thread a minute ago and the last picture of the "brown denim" reminded me of leather. Hence why I made this thread..)

anyone into God Forbid?
by rridner on Wed Feb 11, 2009 11:55 am
I checked out the new record last night (as it was streaming on the band's website) and I gotta say I am pretty disappointed with it. The Coyle Bros are doing far too many sucky clean vocals. This is the 3rd record that the band has been doing this and they seem to be getting worse at it instead of better. They also seem to be overshadowing Byron's "main vocals". I am not against clean vox in metal, but only when it is done tastefully. The music is really good on this record, but these vocals kill almost every song for me. I hate it when I am getting into a tune and then get a huge buzzkill, like "oh, here come those crappy vocals again". Can you tell I'm bummed? Laughing
An observation on guitar buying behavior
by Metal_et_al on Wed Feb 11, 2009 2:51 pm
Here's something I've noticed quite a bit:

A lot of folks out there buy guitars and never play them. I mean a lot.

Perusing the trade board (this one or any other, more than likely) and you'll read things like "played it once for 10 minutes" or "it's been in its case since I got it).

So what gives? Is the pleasure in the chase and not the kill? Is it all about the G.A.S., but once you get the reality in your hands, it's time for the next conquest?

And yes, I plead guilty as charged. I've got a wall full of guitars, many that go for extended periods without being touched, and yet I continue to seek out more.

New guitar AND amp day
by Blazer on Wed Feb 11, 2009 9:03 pm
Today I became owner of an ESP LTD Eclipse by trading it for my LTD Explorer (I decided to get rid of that one since it didn't match up to my Red selfbuilt explorer)
Image
One thing I changed right away were the knobs, the EC 256 has those Gibson "Skirt" knobs which are really hard to grab and because of this guitar having a push-pull function, impossible to pull. So three chrome metal knobs took their place.

After the trade had taken place the guy told me that he had something else I might be interrested in and showed me THIS.

This amp, a seventies Japanese made solid state copy of a Fender twin reverb, was in good working order exept one of the two 12 inch speakers being torn. He told me that he was going to put it with the garbage and I could have it for free. Who was I to say no?

Image

And because of that amp looking so Punk Rock already I couldn't resist taking a picture with the "Pink Nightmare"

Gibson sg pup question (with small pron)
by CemeteryGates on Wed Feb 11, 2009 10:09 pm
So the original bpup in my SG was not good enough for me so I decided to pop a dimebucker in there ( I did this before i knew alot bout pickups) and for a while I was happy with it but....... ALAS I cant stand it now. All I seem to get out of my ax is mud. So, is it the dimebucker or can it be my gear. I run my SG with a morley bad horsie wah and boss metal zone into a peavy KA50 (yes its a keyboard amp but my guitar amp is shot and KA seems to work like a speaker cab with an EQ) I thought i would try a new bridge pup I was thinking mabey a JB because I'm kinda going for a thrashy rythm sound plus I play lead with the same style as Micheal ammot and he uses JB's. What do you forumites suggest?

Deans in NYC (stores)
by MasterplayerC on Thu Feb 12, 2009 12:45 am
So I made a trip into the city today to get strings and picks, with the additional intention of trying to get my hands on a Soltero.

After a bit of research, I learned that there aren't really many Dean dealerships in the NYC area, so I was stuck with craptarcenter, samash, and manny's.

Samash only had Dime models and Evos.

Guitarcenter only had Dime models and a cheapo VMNT.

Manny's had a couple hardtails and MLs, and one signed 4grand$ LW soltero which I dared not touch.

My question: why the hell are there no solteros anywhere?

Just downloaded the new Napalm Death album...off iTunes so no hating... and all I can say is that I hate this band so much because they just keep getting better and better and heavier and heavier.

Smear Campaign was really good, but this just blows it right out of the water. It's honestly one of the heaviest albums I have ever heard. I'd sell both of my nuts to write songs this heavy....

So today I got my Madison Prophecy. It sounds amazing, and the red LED lights on the inside look frickin sick. I've heard negative comments about Madison but I am VERY proud to be endorsed by them. I'm running it through my Vader 4x12 cab and its sounds great!I used to play the Randall Warhead and Cyclone but honestly I think this blows both of them away. It sounds like a tube amp, but is solid state. I love it! Maybe pron soon.
Priest Feast Gig Review!!!
by what-a-cool-username on Thu Feb 12, 2009 1:52 pm
Well men, last night I was at the Belfast leg of the Priest Feast tour and holy GOD what a gig it was!!!!! Every single band was bang on form, there was a great atmosphere and the entire night was pure, unadulterated madness!

Testament were on first, and they had quite a short set. I was a little dissappointed with them actually but it wasn't really any fault of their own. Whoever was their soundman needs a firm boot up the arse. The drums were far too loud, the guitars hardly cut through at all (in fact you literally weren't able to tell Alex was soloing apart from the fact his hands were wiggling about on the fretboard) and Chuck's vocals were drowned out as well. Nonetheless though, they had a great energy about them and I think it was a bit of a nostalgia trip for them as well - as Chuck explained this was the first time they'd played Belfast in 20 odd years. Eric's new siggy Dean was on display as well, and dang it looked great! Despite the sound issues though they did a good job of warming the crowd up.

Then came Megadeth, which was the highlight of my night. I pushed my way through the pits and up front to get as close as I could to Megadave and it was brilliant! Forgive me for being overly sentimental, but something about being 3 feet away from one of your biggest heroes is an AMAZING feeling! The setlist was very well done as well with all the old classics, Hangar 18, A Toute Le Monde, Peace Sells, Tornado of Souls and In My Darkest Hour - along with their new stuff in the form of Sleepwalker and Washington is next. The utmost best song of the night for more or less everyone in the crowd however, was when Megadave spat out "THIS ONE'S ABOUT YOU, THIS ONE'S FOR YOU!" and launched straight into Holy Wars. Absolutley amazing stuff. Also, anything I ever may or may not have said about Chris Broderick is firmly taken back. Chris was absolutley IMMENSE, nailing every solo with precision and style - I think he's going to be AMAZING on the upcoming record! A few nice perks included during one of his solo spots I shouted up "MARK BRIODY RULES!" and he smiled and nodded at me, and we also got the attention of Dave, albeit through asking him to play "The Four Horsemen" Laughing Laughing Laughing

Finally on came Priest. Good lord. 30-something years and they haven't lost one iota of their fire. They sounded brilliant, looked brilliant and everyone had a brilliant time - especially when they ripped out Breaking The Law, Painkiller and Rock Hard. To anyone who's disputing wether Rob Halford still has it or not, he hasn't lost a bit of his voice in the slightest - absolutley amazing showman.

All in all it was a brilliant gig from 3 brilliant bands, although everyone was somewhat dissappointed with Testament's set. No review would be complete without mandatory pron of course, so here you go Smile
Apologies in advance for horrible cell phone quality, bearing in mind I was also screaming drunk at the time. Laughing

Luna Guitars- and graphical shizz
by redrobin144 on Thu Feb 12, 2009 3:42 pm
Well today I purchased a luna henna oasis steel string acoustic in spruce and im in love with it already, its crisp tone means every note is clear and warm.. i started this topic to just see what other people think of this guitar and similar guitars... do you think designs distract from a guitar or do you think they should come as standard. I know this is probally not the best place to put this topic up as most dean guitars are crazily designed (in a good way) I also want to know your opinions on the luna range.
So far the modifications i want to make are putting strap locks on the top and bottom of the guitar but im sure there will be more.
I also wanted to use this to explain abit about luna guitars as there doesn't seem to be very much information elsewhere about them; i might aswell start with some of the electrics. Suprisingly the Luna doesnt fail to hold some secrets the pickup is faily well hidden in the guitar just below the peacock feathers on the design. The inivative design on the "Orion" 4-band preamp with built-in tuner and low z output is amazing. Unlike quite a few other guitars the built in equalizer is close to the middle of the guitar so there is not as much chance (well for me) to move settings whilst playing. Even the battery holder is well designed leading to a simple way of sliding the battery in with a casing and also with a very satisfying click Razz almost like pushing a magazine into a gun Wink along with the sleek neck. The only drawbacks to the guitar are the slightly bigger body which in itself is not realy drawback for me as i was used to playing a large flamenco nylon stringer guitar and the small headstock.. although it does look slightly les paulish which i do like.
Overall I would say that this is a great buy and sounds amazing acoustic or electric!Image Image Image

Dean Guitars Music Business DIY Summit and USA Factory Tour with Martin Atkins, Josh Maloney, and Curse Mackey

REGISTER HERE: http://www.deanguitarstoursmart.eventbrite.com

In conjunction with Martin Atkins and Tour:Smart, Dean Guitars will be hosting an exclusive DIY music business seminar and factory tour. Dean will be opening its doors to 50 lucky attendees looking to learn more about the music business and how to survive what looks to be the worst economic downturn in half a century. Martin Atkins will present his unique strategies for survival in the music industry.

Martin Atkins, most recognized for work as owner of Invisible Records, author of Tour:Smart (a must have bible for the working musician) as well as his work with bands such as Killing Joke, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Public Image Limited, Pigface andThe Damage Manual, Martin has been a catalyst in numerous global music scenes - from the UK Punk scene of the late 70s and early 80s to the beginnings of Chicago's industrial music revolution to the emerging Beijing music explosion.

In addition to Martin's presentation, Josh Maloney - Director of Dean's USA Custom Shop and Artist Relations - has been kind enough to offer his insight into the rarely discussed business of building relationships with instrument makers into sponsorships and endorsements.

Good Pups for a Jackson RR5
by NES_bOy on Thu Feb 12, 2009 11:53 pm
I'm considering buying a Jackson RR5 and I was wondering which pups I should be using on it.

I like a nice high output sound for my bridge pup (think Metallica Kill 'em All/Megadeth Holy Wars/Lamb of God/etc) and a great fat sound (think Dimebag/etc) for my neck pickup.

I was considering a X2N/Pearly Gates combo, however I was told the X2N might be too much output and give me a way-too-f'ing-much-output/can't-hear-sh*t type of tone since I'm plugged into a kickass Engl Fireball (which already has enough distortion to kill a cat).

So what do you guys think?

Dean Usa Finishes???
by deathgrind on Fri Feb 13, 2009 7:06 am
Do they use polyurethane or nitrocellulose?
Dean USA: Poly vs. Nitro
by deathgrind on Fri Feb 13, 2009 2:06 pm
The only USA Deans Ive played are my 1982 eliite, a lost 100 V, lost 100 ML, and a 1979 patent pending ML all obviously having a Nitro finish (they all frackin rocked by the way). I was curious to know what kind of finish the current regular USA guitars carried cause I was contemplating a hardtail. A couple other Dean bretheren informed me that most every current USA is finished in polyurethane. This is just basically a friendly poll to see what finish you guys would prefer if you were to get a custom Dean if the option were available at the same cost.

Poly is stronger and much more durable. Nitro supposedly lets the wood breath and has better tone. Personally I would go with Nitro to get that old school feel and like the kind of vintage appeal it has.

Another pickup question
by guitarist1993 on Sat Feb 14, 2009 2:43 am
So, yet again, I am taking suggestions for a good pickup set. I was looking at SD blackouts, the AHB-2s, but i need some more ideas. I don't care if they're passive or active, just something with high output, something with some ballz for rock and metal!

I would like to point out that i have a SUPER clean amp, almost no gain. So i use a Line 6 distortion pedal in front. There is not much crunch at all.
Need eBay Help Please.
by Bullet on Sat Feb 14, 2009 4:21 am
Well I have a few questions. I sold something and I haven't been paid after 10 days. So I opened a dispute which prompted the buyer to send me a threatening e-mail. After not responding the whole time I've been sending invoices/e-mails about getting payment. Which I only did that after 5 days of no contact. So how do I go about reporting them to eBay? Also can a buyer see your home address? Since he lived about 20 minutes away from me, and I offered to do the deal in person, to save him shipping charges, after he had won it. I don't want him to try to do something stupid, which would probably end up someone getting hurt.
Saw Lamb of God on Thursday..
by muckers on Sat Feb 14, 2009 3:12 pm
And my God was it brutal! Quite possibly the most brutal gig I've been to, as well as the BEST gig. It was brutal, but not in an asshole-ish way, like when you go and see Machine Head.

Five Finger Death Punch and Unearthed supported (woo!) and Dimmu Borgir (booo!) headlined alongside Lamb of God.

My friend's account of the gig that he put on Facebook tells it best!

My friend Calin! wrote:

Get in, and Five Finger Death Punch are first. Half an hour of awesomeness. Already was familiar with the tracks cos emma gave me a disc with the album on *loves* listened to it a couple of times, i really like the sound.

Then after the soundcheck was Unearth.. who are good... have good stage presence but its pretty samey... and i got a headache.. .still not sweaty at this point...

We then went to the bar and I very much enjoyed a guinness with Tom and Emma whilst Dimmu *cough* crap *cough* Borgir were on... honestly... its all strobe lights and grumbles... guitar riffs are ok.. but they would kill more epileptics a year than anyone else...

Then... dun dun duh!!! Lamb of God! Opening with Hourglass... pit straight away! oops.. started getting sweaty... end of song one... i was drenched Very Happy this is metal!
Set list went: Hourglass, Laid to rest, walk with me in hell, pathetic, ruin, set to fail, descending, now you've got something to die for, dead seeds, blacken the cursed sun, omerta, for vigil and contracter i had to go get water and catch my breath... was knackered.. ready for the final two songs... Redneck, and then.. WALL OF DEATH for Black Label... It was during this wonderful MASSIVE circle pit for black label that i was thrown into the side of the pit and some guy flipped... he tried to beat the crap out of me Very Happy .. beating me round the head and back and... most amusing of all... his fat hand punched me in the back of the neck and then he grabbed me... twisted... then through me back into the middle...
Now children... for those of you that don't know.. this is not correct pit etiquette... so i circled round.. and found the guy that did it... did the whole macho thing of "what was that?" and asserted myself in the way us men do and squared him up. Then i had the *absolute joy* of having him apologise.. when he was twice as big as me *dances* ner ner ner!!!

Bought no merch... my wardrobe is FULL of gig teeeees i should maybe start buying some other types of clothes....

Calin now recommends EVERYONE should go see Lamb of God... despite the fact that it is the heaviest gig i've been to... Slipknot is Tame (but slipknot was tame in comparison with bullet for my valentine)
and most people, despite being brick-s....houses... were rather nice... unlike machine head fans where it is all out death and they are knob-heads about it.....

I haven't got it yet, but I have no doubt as to its durability, functionality, quality.

UPDATE!!

As it ended up turning out, this product didn't end up working properly. I ended up redesigning the circuit from the ground up 3 times!! But now, 10 months after I was first commisioned on this project, I am ready to ship to brother Martin!!
I am confident enough to say that I could theoretically make a 10 amp switcher if any one is feeling crazy!!

Here's some updated pronz from the rebuilds...

All in all, I learned a ton from this project... I learned to read schematics, and gained an understanding for opamps and such.

This thing sounds sweet as hell!! It's got a great buffer setup so you get zero signal loss ass you add amps!!

Tool - Adam Jones
by zootallures on Sat Feb 14, 2009 11:32 pm
With Adam Jones on the new Guitar World cover, and an interview with him and Kirk Hammet, I pose this question:

Seems Tool has always had cult status, Maynard (god love him) helps perpetuate that persona, but is Adam Jones really respected as a "metal" guitarist? I mean, he really doesn't shred per se, yet the music tends towards extreme heavy and with articulate use of time signature and a very great command of tone. Jones fits the bill perfectly. Listen to "Ticks and Leeches", "Lateralus" or "Rosetta Stoned", you have to admire this guy's understanding of electric guitar. Gut level guitar playing, again, not Zakk or Dime lead work but IMHO the guitar work is simply killer. Could be my sincere admiration of rock beyond 4:4 timing, but Tool just lights me up.

I've loved Tool since Aenima, and this is from someone that once thought a song without a guitar solo was lame...

Opinions???
I have TWO questions (acoustic)
by AustinModels on Sat Feb 14, 2009 11:33 pm
Dean makes some really good acoustic guitars... I have a number of them. Why doesn't this forum have a category for ACOUSTIC DEAN? Lots of Dimebag, Shredder, and Bass talk... but very little about Dean acoustic on here. Sad

That was question numero uno.

Dos:

Does anyone have this little acoustic Dean amp? If so, what is your feedback about it? Good? Bad? Is it worth going after for acoustic playing? I usually just set one of my regular amps to clean and then play acoustic through, but have wanted an actual acoustic amp and I'd love to keep my equipment Dean where possible.

Jump on this yes or no
by Warlock_340 on Sun Feb 15, 2009 4:31 am
Theres a music store like 10 miles away, they got a Peavey JSX (my dream amp) head for $930, thing is it was a floor amp so it might have taken some abuse (not letting tubes warm up, not using standby switch, etc) but it's also a PeaVey so it's a tough nut to crack. Also it's a small time place so it's not like 20 million 15 year olds use it everyday. So I need some feedback from people with good experience, should I jump on this or no?

Also the amps probably been there for like a year.

baritone guitars
by rottingcorpse on Sun Feb 15, 2009 12:30 pm
raifo got me thinking when he posted the prs baritone thread. i saw that it was $600 or so,and thought....i have always wondered what these play like.

being built like sasquatch, with arms like a gorilla and meat hooks for hands,i thought that a baritone guitar might be kinda cool to add to the arsenal. i know that the extra length makes the string tension feel different.

so who here has any time playing one? not just a few 30 minutes sessions at a music store, but real time behind the fretboard. do they pinch harmonic well? if you use bigger strings on it,how does that effect the tone?(bigger wound strings sound better to me,and the higher tension feels better under the brick i use for a pick).

anyway,i am seriously considering popping for one just for giggles. it would be nice to buy a guitar i can afford in this economy, instead of having to save 6 months for the ones i normally buy. it is a toss-up between a baritone and an 8 stringer(after i got g.a.s. from cross of iron's recent post). i have the amp rig to support the extended range of these types of guitars.

Yamaha SG2000 & SG1300TS
by tommygd on Mon Feb 16, 2009 8:55 am
I recently sold my 1981 Yamaha SG2000. This got me thinking about my other Yamaha, an SG1300TS. I know nothing of the history of this model. I have searched google, translated all sorts of languages into what can only be described as 'nearly english', and posted on the yamaha forums (next to useless unless you play a keyboard!)

There are quite a few guitar gurus out there in dean forumland and i wondered if anyone knows anything at all about this particular model.

So far i have established it was only made '84 - '85. Mine appears to be all original, and it plays amazingly well, like most of the Yamaha SG models.

If anyone knows anything, or owns one, or has any knowledge at all about the Yamaha SG1300TS then please please pass it on.

i dont know about you, but i've always thought that Zemaitis guitars are awesome 'gentleman's guitar. they have a slight look of elegance, and the golden age of metal work that would look like a prop out of the Titanic ship. and that V that James Hetfield has been lugging around as of late looks awesome too...their price on the other hand...:poke:

anyways, i was looking through the net and i came across this:

a bunch of technique related questions
by Blind Theory on Mon Feb 16, 2009 9:35 pm
Ok, I want my soloing to get better(i know, alot of these are floating around). I only know the first four positions of the pentatonic scale. I know that is not nearly enough for starting soloing that doesnt sound like arse. What scales/modes should I learn so that I can add a little spice to my very bland stew of scales?
Question two:
For tapping, what is better for your skill level overall, finger tapping or pick tapping? Is there one that is more helpful in terms of finger strength and overall technique?
Question 3:
This is probably the billionth time i have tryed to get sweeps down. How should I go about getting this stuff down? It just isnt clicking for me. Is there something that helped it click for you before you got it down?
Question 4:
For writing good riffs that flow together, Is there anything I should know? I know that chords are always good. Are there any type of chords that are odd or weird that sound cool and add to the overall texture of a song? If I wanted to write a lead part over some chords, would it be easiest to write using the same key the chords are in? How would i go about figuring out what chord goes with what key?

I know this is a lot but it will help me.
Thanks,
BT

Am I crazy? (Tone conundrum)
by sasquatchv03 on Tue Feb 17, 2009 12:27 am
I have officially become baffled. I recently acquired an Engl Powerball. I love the cleans, but I am a little confused about the gain tones. Long story short, it is lacking the depth and clarity, and extreme gain that it is supposed to be known for. Palm muting sounds like the equivalent of what it would sound like on a low-end Vox with a cheap distortion pedal. Palm muting is more important to me than anything, and it isn't very dynamic or high gain on this amp. I don't think this is the Powerball's fault, though.

I owned a Splawn Quickrod that isn't an ultra high gain amp like Engl, Bogner, Diezel, etc., however, it has more gain than any Marshall ever (Marshall on steroids). My problem is that my Powerball has almost the exact same amount of gain as the Quickrod.

Everything I know about amps tells me that the Powerball should have an s-ton more gain than the quickrod, however, to my ear they sound similar. The Powerball sounds very much like a boosted JCM 800 to me.

It is also suffering from coppery/spiky highs, chalky mids, and muddy bass. Is any of this normal for the Powerball? I have tried every possible combination of Eq'ing and the best I could get was less of the blanket sound, but on the flip side it gets too trebly with more presence. It simply doesn't sound very full or high gain. My Line 6 Spider II 30 watt amp LITERALLY has more gain on the insane channel with the gain at 10 o'clock than my powerball on channel four DIMED! That can't be right, can it?

My immediate guess was that it was the Splawn cab (which I am not happy with), so I ordered a Vader 2x12 that should be here in a few days. I am hoping this solves my problem, but I can't imagine a cabinet drastically sapping gain out of an amp. I know cabs can drastically change the timbre of an amp, but can they actually suck gain out of a head? I am sorry this is so long, but I am very flustered and confused right now. I appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thanks, everyone.
An odd "Dead-End" feeling...
by SkinnyMan on Tue Feb 17, 2009 2:55 am
I feel like I reached a dead-end in my playing... Sad

I keep playing the same stuff over and over, and I have NO clue where to get started with this theory stuff. Tommorow I'm going to start reviewing MAB's Speed Kills DVD's, and study hard from them, because my biggest interest in style is speedy legato licks. Not totally Neo-Classical, but I love to put soul into my playing.

After I replace my nut, and get new tubes, and maybe a Delay pedal, I'm going to revamp my tone, warm up completely before I play for real (like, 15 minute Warm-Up runs) and just practice on building speed and putting emotion into my playing... however, I need to know... where the hell do I start!? Shocked

Help me guys, I feel helpless. Crying or Very sad I feel like I got WORSE at playing, and I don't feel worthy of all my nice gear. My old self is telling me "QUIT!" but how? After I got all this nice stuff?! No way, please help me guys, I'm serious, this is my playing life on the line. Shocked Crying or Very sad

Quick question - need help!
by Delanoir on Tue Feb 17, 2009 7:24 am
Hey, sorry for the random but urgent thread.

I have a guitar left at home (at school currently, and didn't want to take my nicest one), that I'm afraid might have too much tension on the neck, and I really don't want to do any lasting damage.

It has a maple neck, 25.5" scale, set up for Drop-C/D-Standard tuning, and has .11 or .12 gauge strings. Problem is, I think I may have left it in E Standard.

Should I be worried? I won't be home for another month and a half, but I could call my parents and tell them to get it set up or at least the truss rod adjusted. (they wouldn't know how to do it themselves).

Much thanks!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that it has an OFR bridge, if that makes any difference.

EDIT2: If it is in E, which I'm pretty sure it is, it would now have been that way for a few months now.

Does anyone have experience with a DiMarzio Drop-Sonic?

i've heard John Petrucci plays em' and i like his tone....but then i realized, he is frackin' rich,he has awesome amps and awesome guitars.

soooo does anyone have first hand experience with em'?

BTW i would be putting it in my Dean MLX

anyone have any suggestions for a better pickup if the Drop Sonic fails

More natural look without flash or Sun on it.

Was gonna give it to my teenage niece but my sister said NO! Twisted Evil Shocked Laughing So it stays put for now.

It does sound cool at times but plays good with a typical import feel. It has a nice "fit" to it and does stay in tune. Razz
