Help me get a good clean sound
by BillPalmer on Sat Aug 01, 2009 4:47 am
I'm playing through a line 6 spider 3 and I have humbuckers in my guitar. One of which is a Dimebucker. I am geting seriously pissed off because I cant make a good clean sound. The settings on my amp are Drive, Bass, Mids, Treble, and channel volume. And please dont recommend me to buy a new amp or pedal. Laughing

Wacky, Tacky, or Just Plain Wrong?
by peppered on Sat Aug 01, 2009 2:08 pm
I'll try to keep this brief, but I'm looking for some general feedback on an idea I have. After years of setups, repairs and general construction experience I've decided to move forward on building my own guitars. I have a few models to offer and just enough seed $ to build the prototypes. In a perfect world I would already have a complete shop of equipment, supplies, etc. This not being the case, I'm basically starting from scratch with just my ideas, designs, and enough money to buy supplies for constructing the first few guitars. The options are to 1) save up, 2) get a loan, 3) solicit pre-orders from at least 25 buyers which will give me the capital to purchase needed equipment/supplies. The latter relies on many variables; markets response to guitar designs, customers lack of reference to my skills and experience as a builder, trust, buyers response to finished product, just to name a few. It's hard enough to 'sell' your idea to someone let alone ask for half $ down in advance from people who've never heard of you.

So, I'm just throwing this stuff out there since I'm only in the planning stages of this venture. I appreciate anyone's thoughts and suggestions. Thank you for your time.

Marshall AVT50H. Pull the trigger?
by Spite on Sat Aug 01, 2009 7:17 pm
I've gotten a great offer to buy a Marshall AVT50H, and I'm this close to pull the trigger on it and pick it up.
All I need to know now, is how the AVT50 owners like theirs?
Versatile amp? I already have a Randall RH150G3+, but I need something for more Marshall-like tones that I cant get with the Randall. Also for backup, if my Randall should ever fail me.

Shaping guitar cases
by redrobin144 on Sat Aug 01, 2009 10:40 pm
So during these summer months i tend to get bored, between work and the odd day off, for some reason i though basically making my case into a off liscense portable bar would be a good use of my time, it turned out better than i expected.

Firstly i shaped the cuts around the shape of the bottle

then scooped some of the polysterene away, making sure to carefully keep the padding which was originally on the bottom of the pocket

at this stage it was abit messy and i decided to hover up, a very good idea Razz

after this i glued down the bottom padding, some of the places where id shaped couldnt be patched over so i had an idea of spraying the extra places black which matchs the rest of the case

after some very strange looks in the local home styling shop from a teenager buying a single can of black spray paint, i sprayed a few coats on the case and i really like how it turned out.

So far the case has a bottle of jack daniels, a shot glass or three Razz, a bar towel

.. as becoming an ebay addict this summer i have a few extra things on the way, a pack of cards and a bob dylan zippo lighter Wink

(all i know is trips with the traditional group are gonna be great fun with all the guitarists at the back of the bus Wink )

Running a 5150 Into a PA.
by Bullet on Sun Aug 02, 2009 12:12 am
Is there anyway to run a 5150 212 into a PA without mic'ing it? I was wondering if it would be possible to do this using the send on the effects loop. With out damaging the PA Mixer, or the amp. My friend is wanting to borrow my 5150 for a show tonight. He wants to go through a pa but doesn't have an extra Mic to mic it with.

Floyd vs standard bridge
by Sceptre on Sun Aug 02, 2009 4:58 am
Im sure this has probably been brought up before, but I wanted to see for myself what you guys thought.

On the one hand you've got your regular bridge like the Tune-o-Matic that most guitars today come stock with. They provide stability and aren't a gigantic hassle. The drawback is you don't get to do those awesome whammy tricks!

And on the other hand you have the Floyd and other tremolo style bridges. They are capable of doing what a Tune-o-Matic cant, obviously, but the drawback here is that they are a huge pain to maintain(More or less so depending on what kind of tremolo you have)

School me on Marshall amps!
by ecsong187 on Sun Aug 02, 2009 4:34 pm
So I'm just wondering what you guys think of Marshalls? For some reason I could never get along with them, but why do so many guys use them? I mean they seem to do an amazing classic rock tone, but when it comes to metal I couldn't stand them.
So why do guys like Slash, Dave Mustaine, Zakk Wylde,Kerry King, etc still use them? Am I just looking at the wrong models? My old guitar teacher told me that the original JCM 800s from the 80's are amazing and he said if I can find one to snag it up because I won't regret it.
Just wanted to see what your guys' views are on Marshalls, I've always been a Boogie fan myself, but have recently been wanting to try and JCM 800 or try to get a Zakk Wylde or Slash Sig Marshall. Anyone have experience with either of those?
Thanks

Advice on using octaves?
by -JiMi DRiX- on Sun Aug 02, 2009 9:08 pm
Im posting this from a bassists point of view, but im sure guitarists here also have an opinion on it too. So lets see if I can explain this with my lack of impressiVE music lingo...

As I've gone through and learned the octaves notes for all the other notes (we tune in Drop-C btw), I've gone back through our songs, and depending on what I thought sounded better, I started playing the lower octave notes of the part/riff instead of whats "same as the guitar", to give the part in the song a lower low and more balls. (All part of teaching myself to PLAY BASS, and to shake some of that guitar player mentality that I have from having played guitar first before bass)

So in the aspect of playing the lower octaves to make the music more beefy or whatever, what are your opinions? I'll leave it that open just to see what kind of responses I get. Razz

Hey

I was just thinking and was wondering if anyone else has this problem. I was actually born with the fingertip of my little finger slightly bent inwards(towards the other fingers)by about a 5 degree angle im guesstimating I'm not sure if this can have any real effect on my playing but sometimes it hard to do those long stretches, and often times I have to tilt the neck up to fret correctly with my little finger. Was wondering if anyone else had bent fingers?

PS apparently guesstimating is a word doesnt say Im spelling it wrong... Laughing Laughing

NAD (New Amp Day!) - some Orange-y British goodness ;)
by muckers on Mon Aug 03, 2009 8:42 am
After more than a year of waiting, saving, going round guitar stores and trying out amps I finally have it! My first tube amp, and damn...what a first tube amp to have!

15 watts of class A, British awesomeness. Sounds like a beast! It can pull of some really creamy cleans by simply rolling off the volume on the neck pickup, then switching to my fully-cranked bridge pickup for some really beefy distorted growl. Who needs two channels?!

Image

All the pr0n I have at the moment - more to come later today. I picked up the head yesterday and was lucky, cos it was literally the last one they had in stock. Shocked

I'm getting the cab later today - I bought the matching Orange 1x12 off eBay and saved myself a good £80 (about $130-odd) buying it used instead of new.

I'll try and get a video up or some sound clips or something as well.
Cool

But DAMN I couldn't be more happy with this amp - perfection!
Avril Lavigne..... WTF!?!?!?
by dan_plus_o on Mon Aug 03, 2009 9:37 am
Hey guys! So I was watching some videos on youtube just now and someone was asking what song is this.. I just toke a guess and said Avril Lavigne because it sounded like the kind of crap she would do. Turns out I was right and the only reason I was right is because the song sounded so much the same as her other stupid song.

Here is the Girlfriend song that I am sure most have heard:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ25-glGRzI

WARNING!!!! I recommend only listening to the first 30 seconds or so to avoid nauseousness.

From what I know it was/is a pretty popular song

Then there is this song called "the best dam thing"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOabxzwf-bM

It sounds so frippin similar it makes me sick.. The beat with the annoying claps and then the background singers.... Rolling Eyes

I never did like Avril but I thought her old stuff "Skater Boy" or whatever it is called was a lot better then this new s#%t.

OH GOD!!! MUST CLEANSE EARS!! Turns on some DÅÅTH!

Every summer, I dig out the old Best of Steve Miller CD. I've listened to this off and on throughout my life and summer just isn't the same without it. Anyone else hooked?

I just read his wiki page, got lessons from family friend Les Paul when he was a kid, taught Boz Scaggs his 1st guitar chords, picked up some stuff when he met T-Bone Walker, jammed with (and got encouragement from) Muddy Waters and Buddy guy all before he released a single.

Desktop Wallpaper of audience (For Inspiration)
by dan_plus_o on Tue Aug 04, 2009 2:43 am
Hey guys! This is probably a big shot in the dark but I am looking for a high res (preferably 1680x1050 or bigger) wallpaper of an audience (preferably metal) from the point of view on the stage. Basically I want to have my computers background to look like I am on that stage. The reason is for inspiration.

I am currently listening through those Tom Hess (http://tomhess.net) audio clips and he keeps mentioning how important it is to have goals and to stay inspired. My goal is to play for a huge stadium full of headbanging metal heads so I want to get a background that looks just like that. I then want to add in the words, "If you have big enough reasons, you can achieve virtually anything" on it.

Favorite Riff Ever?
by Hot Sauce on Tue Aug 04, 2009 6:42 am
It's been posted a million times since I joined back in '04, but time changes things, so I guess i'll ask again. Just recently i've started digging on this particular riff REALLY hard. I vote it the most thrashing moment in any thrash metal tune (Besides the verse in Exodus's Toxic Waltz, imo.) The simple, bouncy riff, the drums, and Dave's vocals and lyrics really add to the metal thrashing madness. The riff isn't really all that, but when the drums come in it absolutely comes alive.

It's the riff at 4:04

Musical Testimonies
by Hot Sauce on Tue Aug 04, 2009 10:47 am
I know this is a super long post, but I just wanted to spill out my love for guitar and music in general and give you guys a taste of my stuff. Hoping maybe someone will reply to or even read this whole post. Would be greatly appreciated, though. Cool

Well, i'm still awake at 5 o'clock in the morning and feeling a bit nostalgic. Felt i'd post this up for you guys and see if any of you wanted to share anything like what i'm about to say.

I started taking lessons in 2003. The sole reason I wanted to begin playing was so I could learn the basics and start writing original stuff. Hell, I wrote music on my cousins guitar after my first lesson and i'm STILL considering it to be part of one of my latest originals. I guess I have a good ear or something, hell I don't know. I never really learned many solos, except Crazy Train, Nothing Else Matters, Comfortably Numb, Mother (Pink Floyd), You Really Got Me (Van Halen), and Panama (Van Halen), and a few others I can't even remember. Hell I don't know many songs by other artists all the way through. I chose to develop my own style and find my way around the fretboard by jamming improv style to backing tracks and various CDs of bands I like.

Now I think i'm in a good spot. People are always telling me that i'm an awesome guitarist, which humbles me very much. I'm the main songwriter and lead guitarist of an INTENSE prog-rock band. We're planning on getting an EP recorded soon, as I have most of the music on my part already written, including lyrics (which i'm currently doing what I guess you'd call 'final drafts' on.) But this is the point of the thread: I just want to know WHY you play guitar, how you come up with original music, and how it makes you feel.

When I write music for my band, I find that I write my very best when i'm depressed (I have a really bad bipolar disorder that puts me in the worst of moods sometimes.) When i'm depressed is when all that emotion inside me just pours out through my fingers on my guitar. Usually when i'm in those moods, I tend to think way too hard about things, and I truly believe that is why it gives me so much control over the guitar. It's all because music to me is about emotion. Music has a reason, and if you write music intended on said reason, you've got something going. I love music where you can tell the artist is really expelling all of their feelings through ther instruments, lyrics, vocals, etc. That's how I am. Nothing puts me in a better mood when i'm depressed than playing sad music. That's why my music always always tends to have such an ethereal, haunting vibe.

My lyrics are often poems before they're even turned to songs. I often parody situations to try to make myself feel a little better when I get in those negative moods. But I always, and I mean ALWAYS, have a strong feeling about something, someone, or anything else when it comes to writing. Here is an example of some of my lyrics:

(This song is a solo acoustic song by me, but written for use with my band.)

'Find the Time'

Misty morning eyes,
Set on the bluest skies,
Somewhere, someday,
We'll see eye to eye,
Under sunlights rays...

If I could find the time,
To reach back into the past,
Maybe i'd realize,
It was never meant to be,
But time never ends...

Clear blue skies have
turned stormy and grey,
Wish you the best
Though I never saw your face
Under sunlights rays...

Here are also a few of videos of me improvising over some rhythms I laid down. (Please excuse the often abrasive quality of the metal vid.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFKndm4RH08

This one has a lot Gilmour influence (the rhythm part is used in a song called 'Neanderthal' that i've written.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pcK3LrPLsA

This one is currently not finished, lyric and guitar-wise, but this is the basis of the song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdozp7gGV8Q

People have told me the solo in this one really compliments my style. By that they mean the awkward moments when i'm soloing where I start getting into some really strange phrasing patterns.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dxXecgp2RA

Need new bridge pickup suggestions guys! (Baker Act?)
by muckers on Tue Aug 04, 2009 11:48 am
So, after fiddling around with my new rig, I've come to the conclusion that the Dimebuckers I have aren't for me any more.

Too high output, too much emphasis on treble.

So I need a couple of new bridge pickups!

I don't play that much metal any more, so it's not really the pickup for me. I play more classic rock/80s rock/hair rock stuff these days, and just yesterday got an Orange amp (guitars I have are in my sig).

I've been looking at Dean's pickups and they look very promising, and aren't overly expensive. I've heard really good things about the Baker Act, but how would it handle the styles I've listed? (Bands like Whitesnake, Van Halen, Def Leppard, Black Stone Cherry, AC/DC, Firehouse etc.)

Has anyone had a chance to try out the Michael Schenker 'Lights Out' pickup? Thoughts?

And if you guys have any other suggestions, please post them! Smile

Want to upgrade my gear.. no idea what to do
by fila on Tue Aug 04, 2009 5:31 pm
I own a Randall RG50TC and a Dean V79. It's great.. if you wanna play heavy. but my musical taste leans more towards all kind of rock now, I kinda listened only to metal when I bought these things. Now I listen to bands like Cream, Eagles, Deep Purple, Dire Straits etc.

I can't afford buying entirely new stuff, neither do I want to, I was just thinking putting new tubes, speaker and maybe the pickups, but I do not know what to purchase.

some input?? Razz
New guitar movie
by twisted on Tue Aug 04, 2009 5:40 pm
May have been posted already. not sure.
Went to see collector this morning. One of the previews was for a movie coming out called "It might get loud" or something like that.

Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White(not sure why they picked him). Talking about how they started in guitar and goes through thier aproach on guitar playing. May not be too bad. Not a big fan of any of them really, although the Edge does some really cool and innovative stuff with effects.

Can a TSL take 6550 Tubes?
by Body_Snatcher on Tue Aug 04, 2009 9:43 pm
So I acquired a TSL 60 today rather than a JVM410H. The price difference was a fair bit so I took the deal.

Great amp however the power tubes are EL-34s which I don't particularly enjoy, they tend to result in a more mid oriented tone with a slightly flabby bottom.

Can the TSL take 6550 Power Tubes?

Dean Imports

Does anyone know Where Dean's imports are made?
Does dean use a dedicated factory or do they contract various independant factories to fill quotas?
I'm not as interested in country of manufacture as much as I am the factory and quality control. do the guitars go from the factory to the distributors or are they proofed and set up at a cetral location prior to distribution?

NGD - NDC - Gibson SG Standard
by BradWorld on Thu Aug 06, 2009 7:38 pm
I have been looking for a Gibson SG Standard for a while. When this one became available, I did not want a black one, so I passed. But after talking to the seller, and looking at the photos for a couple of days, I began to really like the look of this guitar.

It has a bit of an aged look to it. It is about ten years old. There are very few blemishes on the guitar. But the binding and plastic bits have yellowed quite a bit. And the finish is starting to sink into the wood grain and check just a bit. I am really digging the mojo of this guitar. A couple of guitarists here at work immediately thought it was a vintage SG when I pulled it out of the case. I like that!

I only have a MicroCube here are work, so I cant really comment on the sound too much. But I have had the 490R / 498T combo in other Gibsons, and really love the sound of these pickups. They are my favorite of all the Gibson pups. I will fire this up through some tube amps when I get home. But the unplugged sound of this guitar is incredibly sweet. Very resonant and warm, without that hollow tendency that SG's sometimes have when strummed unplugged. This guitar is quite solid, and it sounds so when played unplugged. Very surprising, and welcomed.

Thanks to ShatteredImg for hooking me up with this bad boy. He was a real pleasure to deal with.

A message from Lew:
Quote:
I am the original owner of this exquisite beast. Michael is helping me sell my guitar. We both are some of the few and proud that build the Dean USA Customs. Mike and I personally hand filed and hand sanded all 150 of the limited edition VMNTs, and with the ultimate care if I may say so. Mike personally did the inlay work, as he truly is the very best in the business. That being said, I personally witnessed the construction of the USA VMNT guitars from start to finish and must say that the exceptional work that went into hand crafting these guitars just floors me. I should know. I've bled for these guitars. I have a scar on my left hand from a razor blade that slipped when I was detailing the crazy points on one of the 150 axes. I bought this guitar because Megadeth is my favorite band, and figured that since I have the honor of building the guitars for my favorite guitar player "Mustaine", I had better buy one. I've been playing for many many years now and can tell you personally that I have played most of the sweetest MegadetH songs on it, start to finish. I have tested it and will tell you that it definitely shreds just like Dave's Vs. Which by the way, during the original research and development of Dave's guitar. I played one of his old king Vs, I can't say which, but the one that we built way out-shredded the old V. It really hurts to sell it, but with the insane amount of money it costs to build a really nice guitar "like this one". I have to sell it in order to build my next Dean Custom. Which will be a 7 string. Yet another reason I'm selling it, because I'm about to make a permanent switch, over to 7 string guitars with a floating tremolo for the death metal that I need to be writing and playing. That's the reasons why I am letting her go. The case has a couple of light scratches on the front. If you want and high resolution pics or have any questions at all. Don't hesitate to email me or call anytime day or night at LPC84@roadrunner.com or 440-856-6600. I have a pretty nice camera at home and can upload any pics you want.
ROCK & ROLL and happy bidding. Sincerely Lew

Gonna start having 'Bring Your Amp' parties in a few months

I've got re-amping down to a science now.

So when we start recording the new album (a couple of months away) we're laying down re-amp tracks for all the guitar parts.

I've invited everyone I know to bring their amp over, have a few beers, and we'll run the re-amp tracks through their amps and record them.

I've got guys bringing -

Marshall
Bogner
Splawn
Mesa Boogie

I'm trying to get a Peavey in there too, a Soldano also.

My goal is to have TONS of guitar tracks to choose from during mixdown. Of course, only a couple of amps will make the final mix, but this is going to be fantastic to be able to listen to a lot of tracks and pick the best tones for the album.

So as alot of you know I just got the Blacktooth Rebel guitar through Steve at BRG. I'm seriously looking to get a new amp to compliment such a great guitar. My little 15 watt does not do it justice. I'm really into the tube thing. I tried a tube amp once, it was just a Line6 but it was way better sounding than my puny little thing.

Does anyone know of a good amp that will go hand in hand with lots of high gain etc etc...I'm sure you know what Im trying to get at here

Carolee already is a Dean Girl, so to speak..!
by AustinModels on Fri Aug 07, 2009 12:06 pm
Carolee LOVES Dean guitars. She is a girl who loves DEANS!!!

Earlier this year she and I drove up to Dallas for a few days and spent some time with the Corpse, Martin. What a stand up guy! Carolee is a big fan of his now. Smile

She entered the Dean Girl Contest last night.
Please vote for her!!!

CAROLEE IS ONE OF OUR OWN... a member of the DOA, and a guitar player who loves to thrash. Despite that wild side, and believe me she can get pretty crazy, she is a very down to Earth girl next door... she even raises pigs on her small ranch near Austin, TX.

We plan to be at DOA 2010 and look forward to meeting the best guitar fans in the world. We tried to attend the 2009, but too short timing didn't work with other scheduled things, unfortunately.

Carolee wants to thank everyone who casts a vote her way and to wish all the other girls the best in this fun competition. Thanks, Dean Guitars, for a chance to play.

GFS crunchy rails pickups.
by hellboundinFTworthTX on Fri Aug 07, 2009 4:25 pm
So the Duncan I put in the neck of my splittail decided to go all microphonic squeal crazy on me, so I pulled out the duncans and tried a set of GFS crunchy rails. These are great metal pickups, similar to the Dimebucker but without the nasally midrange. Plus the set was less than one Seymour duncan. Think I'll try the VEH set next in the Midnight ML.

by nickevans on Fri Aug 07, 2009 7:09 pm
I have a Randall RH 200 head.. I lovee the sound of it. It's got a very heavy crunchy sound to it. I run a Boss Mega distortion and use a boss noise suppressor for the gate.. The Cry Baby from Hell sounds beastly through it..

The cab is 4x12" Celestion Rocket 50's. Which I know aren't very good, but I can get a good sound out of them..

What do you guys think of this head/speaker cab combination?

Bad Batch of Seymour Duncan Blackouts?
by AhsanU on Fri Aug 07, 2009 10:41 pm
Alright, I've been having an issue with my Agile Interceptor 7. I didn't feel a need to post it here because, well, it's not a Dean guitar.

I've got an OFR, along with the 7 string SD Blackouts installed. The issue is the neck pickup. There's an extremely large amount of background static noise whenever I switch to the neck pickup, it gets slightly better when I have the pickup switch in the middle, and there's no excess noise at all when I engage the bridge pickup. So it's definitely the neck pickup that is defective.

I went to Sam Ash today to pickup some acoustic strings and I told the guitar tech there (Henry, he's a great guy who's worked on my guitars for ages) told me that there have been a bad batch of Blackouts released by SD; because other people are having the same issue.

I'm not sure if it pertains only to the 7 string Blackouts, or all Blackouts, but this just sucks. SD better replace it at their cost, not mine.

Has anyone else had any issues with their SD Blackouts? I know plenty of you guys have these pickups installed.

So, I've got my rig put together, for the most part. It's serviceable and useable, and the tone is tolerable in the mean time. Figured I'd show what I'm using, get some feedback, advice, hate mail, maybe even an internet stalker!!!

So without further adieu..... I give you!!!!!

My Rig: Marshall JCM 900 4100 head, running at 50 watts. Into a 1960B w/ Celestion GT12-75 and a Crate 412 w/ Celestion 70/80. The rack has a Sennheiser 700 series wireless, and a Carvin Power Conditioner, can't remember the model. I have them mic the 1960B Cab, cause the crate is more middy and chippy, so it cuts through on stage nice, but doesnt sound as good when mic'd up.
Image
My board: Pretty Basic. Main component is JCM Looper from our own DropD.Net dude. It has replaced my normal channel/reverb switch. It has Channel B loop set up with a ZW OD. The gain is set to 10%, never more than that. I use it primarily to fatten the tone up. Channel A has nothing in it, yet. Mod Tone tuner (having some problems using community Power supply with it. Design flaw.) Original Crybaby, and Boss Chorus

Dean Black Gold Z - I love this guitar. It is tuned down to B and Drop A setups. It has a Seymour Duncan Custom and a GFS 59 in it. It rips. None lower.

79 Cherry V- This came from forum members, and is sought after by a few still. I know why. It's awesome. It's better than my old Gibby V. Setup for E and Drop D tunings. Stock Pickups, no change needed on this one. Smokin!!!

Cort Curbow 5- Occasionally I still do bass gigs with my old bands. This is my old reliable. Best money spent on bass gear ever. Dirt cheap and absolutely rockin. And super light for my weak assed old man back.

Black Splitail- Just got this on E Bay. Stole it. I feel bad. Cleaned her up tonight, and gave it a good setup. Dean USA TC's in it. Eb and related tunings. Main guitar.

Image
Dillion Flying V- 1 of 7 made in this finish. It's ugly, and it doesn't age well, but the neck is real wide and flat. It plays real nice, and the PU"s are hot as hell. Great tone out of this thing. Don't play out much with it, because I want to keep it nice. Sentimental value. Gift from the missus.

Image
Heavy Metal Strat Proto- The reason I state Proto is because no one has a clue about it, only heard stories from Fender dudes. Not seen another like it, with this config and setup. My first real guitar. Ma got it for me when I was 13. I sold it to Music Go Round, my buddy bought it not knowing it was mine, sold it to a friend of his. I tracked it down a few years later and bought it back. It's never leaving my hands again. Dimarzio PAF Pro in bridge, Fen USA SC's in neck and mid, Original Floyd Rose, 1 tone 1 vol, with no coil taps. 24 fret neck. Very rare in this config.

Custom V I'm building. Maple Neckthrough, Ebony Board w/no inlays, Ebony Runners, Korina sides. Unsure on electronics. Simple config. 24 frets

Leslie West Soltero- Fat and chunky. God damn. Like a mack truck of tone. The reason I ordered the DOA 09 Soltero. Eb tunings sound superb on this bitch.

Image
Red Split Tail- This my Drop C guitar. Plays like a f'ing dream. Fast neck, great profile, and absolutely beautiful! Gives me a chubby every time I play it!

Image
Washburn thing. I'm not sure what it is. It looks cool cause it's old and worn. Play it when I'm watchin TV. Sounds great throu my old Ampeg turned allt he way up. Feel like a skinny white BB King with no skills.

Image
Yamaha Acoustic- Spruce and Rosewood I think. Real wood not veneer. Love it. Still do acoustic shows on occasion and a wedding here and there. Very big sounding, gets better every year. Piezo pu is nice when plugged in as well. Sounds big.

There you have it, that's my rig for now. There are more guitars in closets that arent' worth mentioning right now, because they are in pieces or busted or just junk. But this is the important stuff that I play.

...Blackstar Amps.

I've recently been on the hunt to upgrade, whilst downsizing my amp.

I'm currently using a crummy Marshall MG100HDFX and Cab. Far too big, and not really very good.So I've decided I need a tube combo.

Last week, I tried a couple of Bugera's (The 333xl and the 6260) and decided that they are also too big for me. (Couldn't get the thing past 2 in the shop without the windows shaking).

So today, I'm randomly flicking through the latest issue of Total Guitar Magazine and I catch a review on the Blackstar Series One 45 Combo. It gets a full 5 stars and the quote is "Your new amp is here!". This genuinely fills me with excitement as the search maybe over!

Breif specs are like this:

Type : Tube Combo
Output : 45w with Dynamic Power Reduction Switch to 4.5w
Speakers : 2x Celestion G12-NV70
Valves : 1x ECC82, 3x ECC83, 2x EL34

Does anyone know anything about this amp? Any info would be amazing.

Here is a link to it if anyone is intrested:

Thanks guys and girls.

Ground Shipping.
by Bullet on Sat Aug 08, 2009 2:41 pm
Can someone help me out here. I've been trying to calculate the cost of ground shipping. On Fed-Ex, and UPS all morning. But ground shipping doesn't appear on the cost calculator. So is there some secret to calculating ground shipping now? Because I've have always been able to calculate cost on their site before. All that shows up are the following.

UPS Next Day Air AM
UPS Next Day Air
UPS 2nd Day Air

Then for Fed-Ex all that shows up is
Fed-Ex Same day
Fed-Ex First Overnight
Fed-Ex Standard Overnight
Fed-Ex 2 Day.

Ok, So I live in iowa and honestly the best metal band I've ever gotten to see here was machine head. But it has came to my knowledge that within a weeks time of each other two pretty awesome shows are coming around and I couldn't be happier. The first is Lamb of god with Gwar and Job for a cowboy..really only happy about seeing LOG but I hear gwar has pretty good stage shows. Then 6 days later Dethklok and Mastodon come with High on fire and Converge. Never heard Converge yet but Mastodon is my favorite band and High on fires pretty damn awesome.

I'm guessing the pics I just tried to upload went straight to the archives because I wasn't given the option to cut and paste or copy? If so, how do I post them? Because I'm below 70 IQ, I thought Archive 1 might have the oldest pics and 9 the newest. If that were correct, my pics would be the last right? Apparently not.
Local music store whining bitchface rant
by 3cardcannon on Sat Aug 08, 2009 8:31 pm
I really wish there was a decent local music store. The only real place I have is a complete joke, and I'm just going to have to quit going there all together. I've never considered a bit of a markup any big deal to support a local business, but the place has to be worthwhile. The only option is a 2 hr drive to Guitar Center Evil or Very Mad

Two weeks ago, I took 3 guitars downtown and put them on consignment. This place hadn't had my strings in for a few months so I was glad to see the rack full of Ernie Balls but not at $8.99/pack Shocked

Last night, I called to see if any of the 3 had sold and the manager tells me I have to come in and sign a revised agreement for consignments. So I go in this morning and 2 of the 3 have the tags swapped. Apparently, the staff can't tell a Dean Sarasota from a Dean Baby ML despite the names being on the TRC's. Mad

Just got a used Fender Strat. 1995 or 1996. Mexican, rosewood neck, graphite bridge saddles and string trees. Neck p/u Duncan Duckbucker, middle p/u Duncan Strat Stack, and bridge JB Jr. It also has a push/pull pot on the second tone knob to create even more tones. THis is a versatile geet. I can go from Stevie Ray to Metal back to Trower and Hendrix and anything in between. I'll have to get some pron up tomorrow.

I suck at taking pictures. These do it no justice.

Should I drill a hole in my cab?
by storm8ring3r on Sun Aug 09, 2009 3:26 pm
So I built this cab to replicate a Krank Krankenstein cab.

All the specs are spot on, as evidenced by the orginal Krank grill I was able to buy fitting perfectly.

Now, the one detail that's missing from my job compared to the original, aside from tolex and getting the baffle board painted and corners rounded off, is the sound hole Krank cabs have at the bottom of the baffle board, between the speakers.

I really don't have good sense of how this will affect the tone of the cab but so far I'm pretty pleased with the sonic results as well as the asthetics of this project.

Will it mitigate droning? I have yet to put a beam from the baffle board to the back board in it for structural integrity and also no acoustic foam yet, that itself should improve behaviour under heavy use.

will it lower the bottom dropoff? I kind of have a feeling the low c# is too low for the cab as the low E seems to be a little louder, which is not all that great, and I don't really want to change back to standard tuning.

anyway here's a pic of mine and a pic of the Krankenstein cab.

Image

Image

Also, I guess the dimensions of the hole are pretty important, but I can only estimate it's size since I did at no point have access to an original krank cab. I did a pretty good job for the grill tho. From calculations it should be 48mm diameter, but I', not sure that's what I came up with.

I just want some opinions because this is an irreversible step and drilling the speaker holes was painful...
interesting cab idea.
by cgibsong002 on Sun Aug 09, 2009 11:30 pm
ok, so tell me if this will work/ makes sense. i've got two cabinets, one 4 ohms, one 8 ohms. one is a 4x10, the other is a 1x15. the problem is, i can't use both because both cabs have one input only, no output. but, how do you think it would work out if i miced one cab, ran that through my mixer, and then into my second cab? i guess essentially all i'm doing is setting up a PA system, but with a guitar cab and a mixer rather than an actual PA system. will this work? and if so, which of the cabs should i mic?

thanks guys.

Fender Frontman 15G... what an amp!
by Serbusfish on Mon Aug 10, 2009 11:30 am
Yesterday I got a call from a friend of mine, he tells me his partner has an old guitar + amp that been sitting in his loft for ages, they were having a clear out and he knew I played so he wondered if I wanted them. He said I could keep them or sell them, up to me.

So he bought them round yesterday. The guitar was a Squier Affinity Strat and the amp was a Fender Frontman 15G (obviously a perfect beginner package). Anyway I had a play with the guitar, it sounds exactly the same as the strat I already have so I wont be keeping it, but its in near brand new condition with only a few light scratches on the body so hopefully I should be able to get a decent price for it (they are £150 new).

Then it came to the amp. I plugged guitar straight in to start with (Washburn Stealth w/EMG's). The clean channel sounded nice, very nice actually. Ive always owned pure metal amps so cleans have never sounded too great, but on this they sounded nice. Then I tried the gain channel, obviously not enough gain for metal so straight away I hooked up my Boss Metal Zone + ISP decimator in front of it to see if I could make it sound half decent. And to my surprise I did.

I set the Boss up like I always do, level maxed, gain at zero, this gives me a nice clean boost. With the amps gain knob at 8 I now have enough gain to play anything from Metallica to Killswitch Engage. I had a fiddle with the amps eq, finally settled with low settings; Bass @ 1, Mids @ 3, Treble @ 1.5. Now im not joking this amp sounds fantastic. With these settings it has a great modern metal tone. If I drop the mids and increase treble I get a Dimebag style chainsaw tone. But I prefer the modern metal style tone. I just cant believe that a cheap starter amp can sound this good. Ive actually decided to sell my Peavey Triple XXX and keep this. For bedroom play its perfect. Obviously as its only 15 watts its not suitable for gigging, but I dont gig so that isnt an issue for me. The Triple XXX may as well go to someone who will gig it, its wasted on me.

Downsides to the amp, both channels share the same eq, doesn't have an effects loop, doesn't have any effects or reverb. Plus sides, solid state = no need to wait around whilst tubes warm up, its small & light, tone is great for such a cheap amp, has individual volume controls for each channel, has headphone jack, and to top it off it didn't cost me a penny.

Sorry for rambling on a bit, but im seriously in awe at how much I like this amp, id originally told my friend I didnt need the amp as I already had a decent one, but im so glad he gave it me anyway! And now i'll hopefully be able to make a nice profit from selling the Strat, the Triple XXX and the MXR 10 band as I no longer need. Be sure to check the trading post within the next few hours if your interested in any of these items Wink

Have my tubes gone microphonic?
by muckers on Mon Aug 10, 2009 12:08 pm
I cranked my (new) Tiny Terror on 7 watts up to full yesterday, but noticed if I tapped the case or the control knobs, then that sound was amplified out of the speaker cabinet.

Is this just what happens at high volume levels (I haven't noticed this when the volume is at noon or less) or have any of my tubes gone microphonic?

I heard this can happen when tubes 'go', and they need to be replaced.

Sounds pretty noobish, I know, but this is my first tube amp and I know lots of you guys have a lot of valve experience Cool

Fender Frontman 15G... what an amp!
by Serbusfish on Mon Aug 10, 2009 12:16 pm

I'm guessing if you're on the Musicians Friends mailing list for their catalog. You're going to get a $20 gift card in the mail from them. I just got one today. It says on the front of the envelope "NO-Strings Attached". So be on the look out for it.

It's a Chafin Helios, the '04 NAMM guitar to be exact. Just...wow.

I was all set to pull the trigger on a custom Carvin, but this opportunity came along (I just missed out on this same guitar the last time it was for sale) and I was not going to let it get past me again. I'll have to pool up some resources to get the Carvin under way. No more guitars for me to sell!

ORANGE TINY TERROR

THIS LITTLE GUY IS APTLY NAMED, FOR SUCH A SMALL PACKAGE IT RIPS! MY EARS ARE RINGING AFTER PLAYING FOR AN HOUR WITH THE GAIN DIMED OUT AND VOLUME @ 4.
I SCORED IT OF CRAIGSLIST FOR $500 WITH THE AVATAR CAB WHICH SOUND EQUAL TO THE ORANGE, STILL IN THE BOX IN PRISTENE CONDITION. IT'S ALSO KOREAN MADE INSTEAD OF THE RECIENT CHINESE ONES.
I NEED TO GET AN OVERDRIVE TO PUT IN FRONT OF IT TO PUSH IT INTO ANGRY ZONE. IT'S VERY RESPONSIVE, EVERY LITTLE TOUCH COMES THROUGH MAKING YOU HAVE TO PLAY CLEAN, THERES NO HIDING WHEN YOUR PLUGED INTO THIS. IT'S VERY TONALLY RICH WITH WAVES OF CREAMY SOUND WASHING OVER YOU.

Someone educate me about Ebay
by Jag Panzer on Tue Aug 11, 2009 9:19 pm
I've only bought 3 things on Ebay in my whole life and never sold anything. So I'm not skilled on the ins and outs of Ebay.

So here is my question -

I was looking at Tom Delonge Strats on Ebay. Tom Delonge and Robert Cray Strats are both hardtails.

Anyway a few of the Delonges for sale have a ton of bids, over 50 bids on one for example. Yet some other Delonges are sitting out there with no bids.

Why is that? Is the Delonge model popular, but only at a certain price? Are all those people looking for a deal but not interested in the higher 'buy it now' prices of other Delonge Strats?
would you buy this??

i was wondering whether or not i should buy this,

Recording guitars, 6505
by _Razorback_ on Tue Aug 11, 2009 9:26 pm
Hey guys we are going to a studio to record drum tracks and we are gonna take them home and record the guitars by ourselves... reason being is we recorded at that studio before and the only thing that ended up good was the drums and we are getting a really good deal on it, plus we have pro tools and a sm57 mic.

I need tips to achieve a sound thats good quality, our genre is like a thrash/melodic death style.
any tips?
How'd you learn to play guitar.
by korus999 on Tue Aug 11, 2009 10:17 pm
I learned by ear I can't read music and don't know music theory.
The only thing I ever had was a chord chart.

I never found the it necessary to learn to read music or even tabs.
I also play Bass and Keyboards.

I'm not into play metal just rock & blues I'm not a shredder.

I realize metal is harder and uses a lot of different scales but I'm to old and my fingers won't move fast enough to try to learn it.

Just would like to know.

If not EMGs.... Then whats your flavor??
by dan_plus_o on Tue Aug 11, 2009 11:55 pm
Hey guys just wanted to start a discussion on EMGS and what kicks their asses..

I currently have EMGs (81/85) in my guitar and my next guitar I am getting (Agile Interceptor) comes stock with EMG 707s. These are the only high end pickups I have ever used so I am not really familiar with the other stuff out there. For me with the EMGs I noticed increased gain, better pinch harmonics, less hum, compared to my Duncan Design JB I was using before.... so of course I am completely happy with my EMGs.

I play HEAVY Death Metal. The Heavier the better so maybe that is why I like EMGs so much, but I was wondering what kicks the crap out of EMGs as far as metal tone goes. It seems that there are the people who stand beside actives and the ones that stand beside their passives. So tell me what pickups do you think demolish the EMGs as far as passives pickups go. As I understand for Actives it is either EMGs or Blackouts so looking more for some good suggestions of passive pickups.

READ:

So this guitar was new & unplayed at a store where some idiot dropped it on the floor, at which point it cracked and part of the body split off. NOOOO!!!! It was purchased by another dealer who (after they stole the dimebucker & switched it with a JB) sent it to an instrument repair shop. Miraculously the repair guy was able to re-attach the body back together, and the guitar now (with some cosmetic blemishes) is as good as new. Technically. The cracks are visible even though the body is solid again, some paint is chipped off, but honestly, I think it's pretty metal that it looks all broken and damaged. I picked up this guitar for practically the cost of strings, and once I got it set up properly I have to admit, It's great! I just got what's like a free CFH! It plays great, has awesome tone and is tougher than any other guitars because it has been resurrected from guitar hell! It's a freakin undead demon!

My next geet is gonna be an LTD V 401. Problem is, I can't decide what color, though. The DX has a quilt maple top in Trans-black, (i would also install a Tremo-no), but if I go string thru, I'd have a certain painter on the forum do some green ghost flames, and probably take off the pickguard, too.

ENGL, I'm Impressed
by Davebag on Thu Aug 13, 2009 2:59 am
well today i walk into guitar trader to pick up some casters and i
look around a bit then i spotted a powerball.i sat down with a
AT3000 and i was just about to plug in when a guy who says hes
indorsed by ENGL asked me if i wanted some help setting it up and
i agreed. he turned everything but the volumes at 12 o'clock and
fired it up. he took me through the channels starting at one, clean,
then two which is a clean with some gain on it, then three which is
low gain channel, and then four the highest gain channel (that
channel has a built in noise gate) and even with the gain at half, it
was killer! every amp i've played, i had to peg the gain and
sometimes that wasnt even enough gain for me but this power ball
was amazing! the cleans where good and the gain was great,
everything was at half but i turned up the treble a little. and i also
played a Kirk Hammster MTS which was cool too and they where both used but in mint condish.
the powerball was at 1400, 600 from the buy-it-new price. I'd buy both of those amps

Boredom breeds HDC- Half Dean content
by 3cardcannon on Thu Aug 13, 2009 3:58 pm
I got bored last night and had the parts, so I put Dean neck on my LP Jr signed by Down. Scale length is perfect, shape of the neck pocket was off by 2mm but a bit of shaping took care of that. The tuners look off because they are 6 in line mini Grovers Laughing

It only took about 2 hours from start to finish and can easily go back to the way it was. The only trouble I'm having is the bridge, it won't let me lower the action any further so if anyone has a recommendation for a replacement, it would be appreciated. The action is playable as is and I have it set up with .011's in drop C.

The zebra pu is from the same Korean ZX I stole the neck off of, but I have a few decent spares and some push/pull pots so I see coil tapping in it's future to make up for the single pu.

Anybody ever ordered a replacement neck from Warmoth? How was it? Was it well finished/fretted/etc? How was the neck profile on it? Also, if you ordered a custom did they give you exactly what you wanted, and how long did it take to arrive?

Meeting with one Dean's newest
by SoCal_CFH on Fri Aug 14, 2009 5:40 am
On Wednesday I was at work and Chris Impelliteri (one Dean's newest artists) came in to have work done on his daughter's VW. I asked him how he liked his white with black pinstripe splittail that he's been playing. He told me he liked it but it is a little headstock heavy (it's an import) but the USA Splittail in Pearl white was much better balanced.

He invited me out to his car to show me the proto Dean had built for him. It was an amazing strat style made from alder with what Chris described as a 70's style strat neck that looked like maple . It had a reverse Mustaine headstock and a spider web paint job with a Wilkinson trem. It felt really solid and about the same weight as a strat. I'm not really a strat guy but I loved this one a lot. Really well balanced and easy upper fret access, and I think the reverse headstock looked killer. I would love to have one that's for damn sure.

Chris is a fantastic player and has been around a long while. I first heard him when he recorded a guitar version of "Somewhere over the rainbow" back in the '90s with his band Impelleteri, this guy definately has got skills and is a super nice guy, really down to earth and a pleasure to talk to. I told him about the forum and asked if he'd be going to DOA party next year. He didn't know about it, but ya never know... he might just go to Tampa for a killer time.

I'm glad he's a customer of mine and hope to see him come back soon. Thanks Chris.

Packaging and posting a guitar
by what-a-cool-username on Fri Aug 14, 2009 2:04 pm
Okay, so I been trying to flog my Dean for a while now and I've had no luck - only bloody timewasters unfortunatley, so I'm thinking of extending it to mainland UK guys and if that fails possibly you yanks as well. Only one problem - I've never posted a guitar before and I'm quite frankly shit scared of screwing it up Laughing
So if anyone could give me a step-by-step process of how to properly wrap and package a guitar and hardshell case, that would be absolute magic.
Thanks!
Do we really have an idea which guitar brand in THE best?
by Darth Jester on Fri Aug 14, 2009 2:05 pm
I love my Washburns, best guitars I've played, but, I just want to say: I don't know what is THE best guitar manufacturer ever. Does anyone really know? I consider myself lucky that I've been able to get guitars that I really like. They're really everything I look for in a good guitar, but there are so many good guitars as there are players, to everyone their own.

So, if someone says, that's crap I don't necessarily believe that before other opinions or trying the guitar out myself. And it goes both ways, someone might say that this and this guitar is awesome but I might not like it at all.

For example, my Rebel-333 Washy, many people say it's cheap crap but for me it's just amazing. Maybe I'm trying to say that don't be brand loyal... why am I saying that? I don't know, just felt like writing this.

Is there even such thing as best guitar brand for one certain player, I don't think so, many manufacturers can have perfect guitar for one certain player.

Now I'm not in the position to buy one but I'm just going about some research so I come to my trusted brothers on the forum for the deal on these two geets.

I'm interested in what exactly sets these guitars apart, besides just the specs.
So anything you know down to the wire about them as far as comparisons go and what you're really diggin' about them would be GOOD BREAD right about now.

So I bought a V79 four months ago. I had it for like a day and then the pickup switch started messing, it couldn't connect to the bridge pick up, but worked with bridge/neck position. I took it to a tech, he fixed it, well now the same problem has occured. Also the g string won't stay in tune very good... (yes mad)

Double the fun! (NGD) *LOTS OF PRONS*
by bazzabalboa on Sat Aug 15, 2009 2:39 am
Sup guys? Well a few days ago i was in my local music shop, and i was playing an absolute load of cheap - mid range Jacksons and what have you. And the corner of my eye caught this guitar... i had to try it. I sat with it and as i played it i couldnt help but think... f*ck this is fantastic!!!

Just as i was about to set it down, i asked the owner (who is a friend of mine) how much it was, is said £90..... yeap.... 90 f*cking quid! Razz

I asked him when he had got it, he said that it had been in his back room for a long time, and that he has been selling it for someone but they never got back to him, so he has put it on display and is selling it so that he can meet his monthly targets, he said that it could be worth anywhere between £100-£300, he said he wanted to let it go soon as and i have had him do alot of work for me before. Technically the thing is second hand.... it is in FANTASTIC condition, it still has plastic around the truss rod cover and the pup selectors. The paint is great, it feels solid as a rock the only 1 complaint is that their is a TINY hairline crack around the neck joint, but this shows up in most bolt on guitars and it is most obvious on white guitars. Anyways, it is tiny and it is cosmetic.

I am gonna give this guitar alot of TLC, new strings, new pups, new strap locks, Truss rod adjustments, and perhaps 2 new bridges. And this thing is seriously heavy, im thinking its over 12lbs.

The brand is 'Atrics', ever heard of them... yeah, me neither. They arnt even on Harmony Centeral or UG. But after alot of interneting, i discovered that they made alot of high quality instruments in low numbers. Their catalog ranged from cheap entry level guitars to high end guitars with high quality tops and out-of-house parts, EMGs, FR, Groover etc.

I gotta tell you, its fun buying a guitar that you have no idea what the specs are.

It sounds fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also yes... you are right... I bought a guitar that is considered SG style Laughing

Dean Exotica Koa, question
by DHarms07 on Sat Aug 15, 2009 5:56 am
Hello,

I purchased an Exotica(Koa finish) about 6 months ago, and I'm having some problems with it. This is my first acoustic, as well. So I'm hoping I can get some advice from more knowledgeable folks than myself. Smile

Mostly on my high E string(now happening on other strings, too)

I'll play a note on the 12th fret, and you'll hear the grating sound of string vs. frets. Horrible sound. Then I'll move up to the 13th, and it'll do the same thing, but worse...and the note will be that of the 14th fret. Then on the 14th fret, all is well and sounds fine.

I've adjusted the action to try to compensate for this...I even adjusted it extremely high to test it out, but even with very high action, it still does the same thing.

Other than this I'm extremely happy with my purchase, though. Smile

Any suggestions?
Got a Super Distortion today
by Davebag on Sat Aug 15, 2009 6:36 am
this pup has big hary BALLS
heres the story:
today i did some work over at my church and i got 40 bucks. my
brother got payed today too and hes owed me money for over a
year. so after he payed me back i had 125 bones and i deside to
see whats going on over at guitar trader. my brother and i go over
and i show him some new amps they got in and i go look at what
pups that had. i asked how much the Super Distortion was and he
said it was marked for 110 bucks but its really 75 (things there are
marked higher than it normally is but they'll charge you the real
price) so i said "i'll take it" and i picked a black one and get home
and drop it in and its way clearer than the stock Dean pups and
bassier and the harmonics scream. and i have enough money to
buy another pup because i found even more money in my room.
hows the Duncan Distortion compared to this?

also got a new pair of shorts Cool
Local Krank Rev1+ ***name that riff***
by bassmantim71 on Sat Aug 15, 2009 7:51 am
EDIT:

Found this while doing my homewerk:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZF4Q5f3qzuE

What riff is he playing at 03:48 Question

*****************************************************

So here's the deal..., I may be picking up a sorta local ENGL Fireball soon (just need to try it out first, to confirm with my own ears).

Now, a Krank Rev1+ just came up for sale locally, and not too expensive either. I remember playing the original Rev1 and loving it, but that was a long time ago.

Any opinions on this amp? I'm leaning towards the used Fireball, but the Rev1+ is about half the price and probably a little more versatile (eq's are not shared clean / dirty channels and a seperate master volume for leads).

Hmmm..., decisions, decisions Surprised

Conspiracy
by psychohaulic on Sat Aug 15, 2009 10:26 am
does anyone ever consider the idea that artists "fake" their own deaths to sit back and reap the rewards while returning to a life of normal? Kurt Cobain must have made 10 times more as a dead guy then he did ever alive, plus he "could" have the benefits of being a nobody again living like a hermit.

Or what about our beloved Dime? did that event really happen is or is it an ellaborate hoax? holy shat Dean must have made the Diamond Darrell family millions now in sales alone. Could he be sitting somewhere in Delaware with a shaved head and clean face laughing right now?

If you're THAT famous i wonder if someone approaches you backstage in a black suit and tie....and asks....are you ready for the next step?

So, pups!
Im looking for anything thats hot, duncans, emgs, BLUSA/B+B xl's, dimarzio, bareknuckle's. If you are selling it, offer it, im not too picky, and of course, the cheaper the better.

I need 4, necks preferably zebra bobins.

Iron Gear pickups
by muckers on Sat Aug 15, 2009 5:11 pm
http://www.irongear.co.uk/index.htm

Yeah, I hadn't heard of them either. I got recommended them by someone over on the Orange forums. At £26 a pop (about $40-something to you US folk) I thought I couldn't go wrong. That way, I could replace the pickups in both my Deans for the cost of one Seymour Duncan or DiMarzio.

And oh man am I glad I went for the cheaper option. You get what you pay for is often true, especially when it comes to electrical gear. But, damn, these pickups are right up there with the big names.

I opted for a set of 'Hot Slags' (lol, I know!) - high output, but sounded to be very well balanced pickups. http://www.irongear.co.uk/irongear_005.htm

They SMOKE my old Dimebuckers out of the water. No horrible background fizz at high gain settings, no ridiculously shrill high end, no thin-sounding tones.

I don't know if anyone here has checked them out of experienced them before, but if you're in the market for new pickups but are short on the moolah DEFINITELY give these a whirl. Given the price, you might as well, which is what I figured.

These pickups have impressed me a lot. I wasn't expecting a lot for £26 (when I was looking at DiMarzio pickups costing £60+) but these smoke the £80-odd I spent on my Dimebuckers.

Give 'em a try!

Set up - Need Help
by bazzabalboa on Sun Aug 16, 2009 4:41 pm
Hey, So im playing this new double neck, and its need setup to my preferences. The action on it is very high, especially on the 12-string neck. The 12 string side has a slight bow in it. It had been sitting in the back of the store for ages before i bought it. And for £85 i was not gonna ask him to set both sides up for me Laughing

SO, i need advice here Razz

1- The slight bow on the 12string is a truss rod issue, i have no idea about adjusting the truss rod, my LP's neck has been as straight as an arrow since the day i bought it. So can anyone advice me on this.

2- I am going to replace both bridges as the saddels on the 6-string side are blunt and one is loose as f*ck which is causeing the string to go out of tune.

3- Im gonna get some new pickups for it, muckers suggested Iron Gear pickups, which i am going to look into getting for the neck postisions. And for the bridge i want a dimebucker on the 6 string, and an xl-500 for the 12string

SO, need help guys. First things first, how do i go about adjusting the truss rod(s)

Thanks in advance,
Baz

Moving more towards blues/rock.
by I M Evil on Mon Aug 17, 2009 6:15 am
I've found myself moving more towards the blues/rock
spectre of music.

Got myself a strat recently, switched to the clean channel
on the amp, boosted the signal with an old OD-1 with level
at full and overdrive at 12 o'clock and there's all those strat
tones I love, the clean ones with a hint of distortion Twisted Evil

It's all there ... Hendrix, Gary Moore (ca '82) and Blackmore Very Happy

Pickups of choice is DiMarzios, or more so their Area '61 in
the bridge for now. I plan on getting the Area '67s for the
neck and bridge in a near future.

Hi guys,
I made a hybrid amp. It was intend to be the Roccaforte preamp and 100W MOSFET (TDA7294) SS amp, but I didn't like the tone of that preamp, it was dull for my taste, and it lacks gain, so I completely redesigned it to suit my taste.

Here is the sample of my amp:
Ultra Sample.mp3 - wet
Ultra Sample1.mp3 - dry
It was recorded with cheap PC mic.

by Lon on Mon Aug 17, 2009 9:41 pm
This one's for me. Someone rear ended me a few weeks back and I got a few $$$ for "pain and suffering". Ha. Picked up a sweet 93 MIM Fender Strat in Candy Apple Red. After at least 75 Strats over the years, this is my first Candy Apple Red one. I also scored a loaded EMG DG20 pickguard for $135 shipped (they run $300 in the stores). Always wanted those too so it appears the stars are aligned in my favor at the moment. The strat is just liek this one, haven't got her cleaned up for pics yet, Also pictured is the loaded EMG set. it's been a good day. Cool

Installed a Crunchy Rails In My Saggy Crotch ML

I made a post before about ordering this pup, well - it came today and I immediately installed it. I am really digging on it. I have heard nothing but good things about these and have always thought about ordering one up - especially considering how cheap they are. These are definitely worth checking out! I have played several kinds of metal on this thing - Death, Thrash, Doom/Stoner and they all sound killer! This pup reminds me of the DiMarzio X2N, which is great cos I love that pup as well. This is one hot lil shredder, it rates in at a ballsy 16.2K. Not only does it sound kickass, it looks kickass too! Very satisfied w/ my purchase at this point. I may check out the Power Rails next Cool

UPDATE from Hevy Devy
by rridner on Tue Aug 18, 2009 2:27 am

Quote:
Hey folks, Dev here with the update for the second instalment of the DTP (Devin Townsend Project) We are just readying the release of album 2, Addicted so here's a few brief words: With Ki, I kind of strode out in uncharted territories for myself musically, and loved the experience. But during the course of writing this 4 record project, it was inevitable that I would end up writing a selection of tunes that were very much in line with my back catalogue. This group of songs is the second record in the series, and it is called ADDICTED. Musically, Addicted is along the lines of the big, wall of sound hard rock / heavy metal of Ocean Machine and Accelerated Evolution (even Physicist at points). It is a very direct and 'to the point' album with an emphasis on groove and the chorus. In the past, lots of my records end up taking a kind of Pink Floyd-ish route (between song meandering etc.) ... Addicted is really simple: 11 rocking songs and no #$%&#@. I wanted to make a record that was heavy, without being dark or depressing. When I got into metal it was for the energy behind it, but somewhere along the way that energy started getting really negative. In music right now, there's a ton of heavy bands that are really depressing to listen to loudly. I wanted to make a record without any real deep metaphor on the surface. Something that sounds good, has a good beat, and a positive feeling. It is still heavy as-all-get-out, but I think there's a differentiation to be made between being 'peaceful', and being peaceful but wanting to celebrate loud, crushing music. The vocal duties on this record are handled by myself and Anneke van Giersbergen. (I wanted to have male and female vocals kind of 'tell the story' so to speak). It's an honour to work with her and she has a lovely, lovely energy. The other musicians on this record are Ryan Van Poederooyen on drums, Brian Waddell on bass, and Mark Cimino on guitars. I love this record, it affects me in a way that I wasn't prepared for. It's a fully rocking album of optimism. If you just want to 'play it loud' without any crazy metaphor, this album might be for you! On other notes: I have been rehearsing with a new band, and we will start touring in early 2010, representing all the back catalogue of solo material, from Ki, Addicted, Physicist, Ziltoid, Terria, Ocean Machine, dtb, Infinity etc... I have some big plans for this and rehearsals are sounding amazing. The touring entity will be called 'Devin Townsend' and is essentially a way for me to get out there and interact again and showcase 15 years of music that never really got it's fair shake. We look forward to seeing you out there! I will start the work on the fourth record Deconstruction in Los Angeles in October, some great plans for that... (and btw, THAT is a heavy record with a lot of metaphor...) news on that as it comes! So I hope you will enjoy Addicted, in the theme of the dtp, the reason Addicted exists is maybe a little deeper than what the record sounds like up front. But up front, it kind of states: 'Life is tough, the world can be an ugly place...so lets forget about the dramas and ROCK - here's some heavy guitars, big choruses and killer beats' Song Titles: ADDICTED

SIT Strings
by rridner on Tue Aug 18, 2009 4:06 pm
been trying different strings a lot lately - my go to brand has been DR for yrs. I have been bouncing around a lot - looking for a new string that may be "better" for me. picked a set of these up last night - apparently this is what comes stock on LTD/ESP products. I grabbed the Heavy Bottom set which is 10-52. so far, I am happy with them - hard to tell at this point as I haven't even had em for a full 24hrs yet. But, so far - so good. Give em a try if you are searching for/trying out new strings. I think the set was between $5 and $6. Hopefully these work out for me

Okay my school just passed this rule we are in magnolia texas
Quote:
The Magnolia ISD School Board approved changes made to the Student Handbook at the July 13 board meeting. Two of the policy changes specifically deal with the dress code as it pertains to male students. Hair in the front must not be below the eyebrows (in the eyes), nor is it to be any lower than the bottom of the ear lobes on either side. The acceptable length of hair in the back will remain the same: no longer than the bottom of the collar. Students and parents will be informed of these policy updates prior to the start of school.

NGD (not dial up friendly) NDC
by shread_bringer on Wed Aug 19, 2009 11:41 pm
Ok while we let the pron load lets learn the story.

So I have this SG Standard that I love, I call her Cadee, you have probably seen pictures of her. Anyway I was dying for another. But even with the Gibson SG price drops I still couldn't afford another. I couldn't even afford a used one. So like all broke people do I started to hit up Craigslist.

Now fast forward 7 months. Still no new guitar but I did see this Listing and the header said, "Gibson Guitar and Marshall amp ($100)" So I clicked on it expecting to see one of those Baldwin by Gibson guitars you can get from Target with a Marshall 10 watt MG. Well once I clicked on it all it said was, "I have a Gibson guitar and a marshall amp that I would like $100 for" So just for shits and giggles I emailed the poster to ask what kind of guitar he had. He said he wasn't sure but he sent me this pic.

Image

So I told him I was very interested but he was on vacation and wouldn't be back for a couple of days. So when he told me he was back I went up to his house outside Raleigh to check the guitar out. I was really nervous when I got there because he lived on a dirt road that went through a swamp so I was scared this was going to be a shady deal. But once I got through the swamp I saw a HUGE house, and that was him. He came out to meet me and was very cool. The guitar seemed to be in good condition but I couldn't really tell because it was so dang dirty. But I figured I'd get it anyway it was only $100 bucks. The guy was very nice couldn't of ask for a better person to do a deal with.

I didn't get home that night till about 10, so I took some quick pictures of how it looked when I got it. Those pics can be found here...

Image
Image
Image
Image

Once those pics where taken I busted out the big box of guitar maintenance supplies and started to clean this thing. About 5 hours later I was finished with the guitar. This was early Monday Morning when I finished it. I finally took some after pron today (Wednesday) and those pics are here...

So long story short is that I'm happy with this guitar. The previous owner told me he bought it when he was in college and only played in occasionally but it mainly sat in the gigbag in his closet. As an added bonus when I was digging through the gigbag pouch to pull out a strap I felt a little piece of paper, it was the original receipt. So I know the guy originally paid $586.97 for this guitar in 96. So I got a like new guitar that just needed a good cleaning a set up. You can't tell from the pics how dry the fretboard was when I got it. It looked awful but some Dunlop Fretboard Conditioner got soaked right up by that board and now his a nice dark color.

If your interested on what kind of guitar this is I did some research and found out that is is called a Gibson All-American SG-1. You may notice the I on the TRC but that is roman numeral for 1 that was my biggest hurtle with this guitar was I kept search for a SG-I. Gibson made the SG-1 in the mid 70's then in 96 the came out with the All-American SG-1. The following year the tinkered with the design a little and renamed it the SG-X. So this guitar was only in production for one year, from my understanding. Also the color is called "Red Burst"

Schecter C-1 Classic

Hey has anyone tried this guitar out and what did you think?

I have one sitting on layaway right now and I am going in tomorrow with my current axe to compare the two. If I do get this schecter I am going to sell my current guitar which has EMG 81/85s in it so I am not sure how well I will take the change in pickups. Will the JB have enough gain for me? Maybe I should try out a SD Distortion, DiMarzio Super Distortion, or X2N. To be honest I am leaning towards the X2N just because of the name... Rolling Eyes I know stupid eh. I play Death Metal so I am currently really liking the EMGs but I figure I will switch to passive for now until I get my New Agile Interceptor (with EMG 707s) then I can compare the two and decide if I want to switch to all actives or all passives. One thing I love about the EMGs is the ease of getting pinch harmonics to sounds good and clear.

Def Leppard - Cheap Trick - Poison show
by Brave Dave on Thu Aug 20, 2009 6:29 am
WOW !!! what an awesome show.

cheap trick opened with "way of the world" a really early tune and it was really cool. rick nielsen only played about 5 guitars, but they only did a 45 minute set, but they played "dream police", which was cool. they had a keyboard player off to the side which really added a lot to the music.

poison...they were there..whatever.

def leppard.....geezzz, these guys have got it down! talk about the consumate professionals. the took the stage with an air of confidence and rifled their way through the songs like nobody's business. they did a couple of tunes from their latest album and they were great, too. i have seen them three times now i the last 5 years and i have to say, this show was the best. i wish i had been so fortunate to play in a band that made it as big as they did. standing on that stage, playing guitar and having 16,500 fans cheering for you has the be the best feeling in the world.

Anyone here have the Peavey Vypyr 100?
by Nightrain on Thu Aug 20, 2009 7:55 pm
If so does it have an external speaker Jack in the back? That is my only complaint out of my Vypyr 75 is that there is no external speaker Jack. Also would it be possible to add an external hook up of some kind to my existing 75 Vypyr?
Thanks, Nightrain Cool Cool Cool
