Got tired of lugging my Randall 2x12 around and I found this baby at the GC near me for a steal (it had been there forever). It's a Marshall Mode Four head. These things got a bad rap back in '03 when they were released and got discontinued. My other guitarist and I tried it out and cranked it and it sounded great.

anyway... pics

gripmaster?
by cgibsong002 on Tue Sep 01, 2009 6:49 pm
anyone use these? how about for warming up?

i've recently started using mine right before playing. basically just the last three days i use it for about 5 minutes or so, and then do a couple more warmups for about 5 minutes on the guitar. i'm not sure if its the gripmaster or what, but all of a sudden i feel like i literally got about twice as good as i was before. my fingers feel like they're flying.

i'm wondering if the gripmaster really helps to loosen up your fingers before playing, as well as strengthening a bit.

new mustaine guitar not a vmnt
by Lunatic on Wed Sep 02, 2009 2:41 am
i just read this interview. anyone hear anything about this new guitar or what model it could be?

Do you have any new Dean guitar stuff coming up?

Yes I do! It’s a good thing that you asked. At the NAMM show that’s coming up at the beginning of next year they’re going to be debuting a brand-new Dean guitar for me. The exciting part is that I looked at Dean’s catalogue and a lot of the guitars they had and… well, my VMNTs, it’s nothing like the original V that they have. It’s nothing like the ones they’re creating right now too. My line is my line. Neck shape, the configuration of the electronics, the ease and comfort, the way the pitch of the headstock is, the way the strings go through the body for getting all of that extra resonance. It’s a one-of-a-kind mentality towards making a guitar the absolute best thing you could ever possibly want to play through. They had another body style that wasn’t being utilised by anybody. I said ‘Can I get you to make me one of those?’ ‘Well yeah, %$#@! man, sure man!’ I said ‘Wow, is anybody playing this?’ ‘No man.’ I said ‘Can I?’ ‘%$#@! yeah man!’ I said ‘Can I change some of the lines on this?’ ‘Yeah sure!’ ‘So I’m gonna Dave Mustaine this guitar right now, ok.’ So we’re debuting a brand-new style. It’s called the Zero and I can’t really tell you much more than that other than it’s going to be a workhorse and the people who have seen it already over at Dean, they’ve been there for years and they’ve seen everything under the sun, that kinda stuff is exciting. Especially when it’s opening up another area of creativity with the company.

Same guitar, different neck??????
by goop on Wed Sep 02, 2009 3:53 pm
I recently got a Black ST with a Floyd and decided to get a hardtail version for ease of tuning. Well I got it today and the thing I love the most about my 1st ST is the thing I hate the most on this one. The neck on this hardtail version seems just like the neck on my RB?! When I got my 1st ST I immediately felt the difference between it and my RB. The RB has a more pronounced V profile and the ST was softer and felt a bit narrower also. It's a real bummer that it's not consistant in a model line up. Sadly she's going back, what a bummer, the cherry looked amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once I get the refund I will get another ST with the Floyd in White. I hope the neck is the same as on my Black ST.

I would sell a kidney if Dean would make 1 5/8 nut width necks. Small hands are a curse Mad .

Time Capsule pups, I'm impressed
by goop on Thu Sep 03, 2009 2:53 am
I just got 2 Splittails with the Time Capsule pups and I'm really impressed so far with the tones I'm getting. I gotta say that I wasn't sure what to expect. When I first heard they were making pups I thought it was going to be some bootleg thing like some of the knock offs on the back of guitar mags. I was wrong. I find these pups to be very articulate for a high output pup. Though I have yet to set up these guitars perfectly I can, for example, strum an Emaj on my Hi-gain channel and still hear each note as I strum through. I also get some nice pick attack when playing. I mostly play hard rock/metal and these pups, IMO, can do it all. I get a sweet tone in the middle position, very good for sweep picking and bluesy stuff. I'm glad I like them and I'm glad I don't have to spend extra $$$$ on replacing pups.

by Anonymous on Thu Sep 03, 2009 8:31 am
well Randall has this genius head called the MTS<--link
i would like to point out that the only difference between all of those is cosmetics and wattage

anyway, what if they brought back RG100s, Centurys, Cyclones, Titains, and the Paul Stanley Colossus models in moduels?
does that sound like a good idea? i'd buy them

discuss and argue
BIT BY THE SPIDER (NAD - PRONZ INSIDE!)
by TRENDKILLCFH333 on Thu Sep 03, 2009 7:02 pm
Now I know a lot of you guys don’t like Line 6 for whatever reason & that’s cool – but I do. From the moment I tried the Spider III 150 watt 2x12 combo at Guitar Center, I fell in love with the distortion channel. Yeah, I said in love – awwwwww. : ) Then when I bought it, I explored all the other tones it had to offer & have been hooked on the Line 6 Spider III series since. I recently traded a Dean Dime-O-Flage for a Spider III 1x12 combo so I could have something at home to jam on.

The 2x12 combo has worked great & been very reliable through rehearsals & gigs. But I decided I needed something with a more professional sound & look. I went into Guitar Center & tried out the HD100 Spider Valve Head through the Line 6 cabinet with Celestion Vintage 30’s & was even more impressed with the warmth in sound the tubes gave. I had to have it.

In this economy, I could not afford to just go & buy one. I had to make some sacrifices. They were a couple guitars I did not play too often along with some pedals that were taking up space. So I sold my Dean DFH CFH to pay some bills, then sold my Dean Dime-O-Flame & Boss GT-8 Effect Processor.

All in all, I got this used half stack for $900 on Ebay, including shipping to my work. Luckily, I am employed at a sign shop & got to test this out last night when nobody was here.

At 100 watts, all tube – this thing is loud! I can definitely tell the difference in tone going from solid state to tube. I wouldn’t say I prefer either one right now. They both have good qualities. I can say that I prefer passive pickups with the solid state because they are less noisy, but active pickups get a little more drive/saturation from the tube amp. The tubes almost have a softer approach to the gain sound where the solid state is more in your face & raw. But with the right amount of tweaking, I can get tones I like from both. I guess it all amounts to personal preference.

The power section in this amp has 4 Sovtek 5881 tubes & the preamp has 2 - 12AX7B tubes.

From the front & turned off, it’s a very plan looking amp, but somewhat classy.
Image

This is when it starts to look cool. It appears to have a clear polycarbonate face & white LED’s light up the translucent white screen printed graphics.
Image

Nothing special about the back…..
Image

I’ve heard good things about these speakers. The sound is probably the best I’ve heard so far. Lots of bass & the high cut through pretty well. This is my first half stack, so I’m pretty excited about being able to just buy another head if I wanted to & use this speaker cabinet.
Image

Lots to read here…..
Image

A bunch of different speaker connection configurations. So far, I have only used output A (16ohm) into the mono input of the cabinet. I’m not very educated with the ohms stuff, so I’ll have to read up on the hookup options.
Image

I thought this was cool. You can switch the ohms resistance of the cabinet for mono (16 or 4 ohms) or for a stereo (8 ohms). Seems pretty versatile depending on the application.
Image

This is my pedal board set up. I can use this for my Spider III 75 watt 1x12 combo, Spider III 150 watt 2x12 combo or my Spider HD100 Valve half stack. All the amps have built in wahs, but I prefer the CFH Dimebag wah. I do want to try the new Kirk Hammett wah – I’ve always liked his wah tone. The Boss NS-II Noise Suppressor works wonders, too. The Spider Valve HD100 has a built in noise gate that is superior to the solid state versions. But this pedal helps keep things extra quiet when I need them to be.
Image

Thought I’d throw in a shot with the lights out.
Image

You can see the tubes in this view. Pretty cool!!!!
Image

All together, I’m very happy about this purchase. I hated to let some Deans go, but I still have 3 left.

My guitar arsenal remains as:
Washburn TRENDKILL signed by Dimebag & Vinnie
ESP LTD V with EMG’s & OFR
Dean FBD Tribute with OFR
Dean Dave Mustaine VMNT Black with Dimebucker & 59’
Dean Razorback Explosion

My amps are:
Line 6 Spider Valve HD100 half stack
Line 6 Spider III 2x12 combo
Line 6 Spider III 1x12 combo
Roland MicroCube
Fender 15 watt combo – soon to be for sale

My pedals (altogether) are:
Line 6 FBV Shortboard
Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor
Dunlop Crybaby From Hell Wah
Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner
Digitech Whammy
Zakk Wylde Wah
Line 6 FBV Express

Since this is my first tube amp, I could use any advice you guys have to offer as far as tubes go. I’ve already begun the search for replacement tubes just to have some on hand but am having a really hard time finding 12AX7B tubes. Any advice as to where I can find these exact tubes? I’m guessing the Sovtek 5881 shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Also, the manual says it recommends having new tubes biased before installing. What does this mean? Is retubing an amp something anyone can do or should I have a professional do it?

Again, any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

- Josh

PS - I don't have the right equipment to post sound clips or I definitely would have.

I've almost pulled the trigger on a mint Gibson Explorer, but the Z's have my attention also...

What's the weight of these guitars, compared to a U.S.A. Gibson?
I can't find a Z to play, but some of the sick deals I've found online on the Deans are almost to good to pass up!!

BTW - The Explorer is a cherry '76 reissue, in MINT condition, for $650.
I found a BRAND NEW Black Gold Z with case online for $425, and a barely used black '79 Z with case for $400.

I got this one the past week. Finally got home to clean it, oil the board and plug it in my rig! It sounds KILLER and plays just as well. I started looking for one of these when I saw Shread_bringer's (mostly for the 24 frets) and wow. I'm extremely impressed. I want to cover the pickup and maybe put on a large SG pickguard. On with the pron:

NBD! Groovy blast from the past. (pron inside)
by Scrapnasty on Fri Sep 04, 2009 2:58 am
Ok so the short story about this thing is that a high school friend purchased it from somebody they knew. I've been trying to get it away from her for years. Well she finally decided to part with it and I jumped on the occasion.

I don't know much about this thing other than it's an old Ibanez lawsuit bass. Probably older than me and it shows. She needs some love bad. Truss rod is frozen so a new neck is a must down the line. Electronics are scratchy so they need to be replaced and the hardware is grimy so it should probably be updated too.

Baring all the work that needs to go into it, this thing is awesome! It's my first bass ever and I couldn't be happier. I'm still learning how to play the thing but I mostly use a pick for now.

Image

I'll try to get much better pics down the line but as a busy college student with a 30 hour a week job, my free time is very very limited. Still I can probably use my photography homework as an excuse to snap a few shots later. Enjoy the one magnificent one so far!

Anyone have experience using an attenuator?
by riklite on Fri Sep 04, 2009 2:02 pm
I'm saving for a Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier but I've hear that they need to be cranked to get the best sound. I want to be able to play it at lower volumes and still have good sound. I've heard a little about attenuators but would like to know more. Has anyone used one? What are some good ones?

Amp shopping...........
by Nightrain on Fri Sep 04, 2009 6:14 pm
I absolutely hate amp shopping. But it has to be done once in a while. Now before anyone suggests anything to check out, I have to be able to make payments on it as I have no lump sums laying around so Zzounds is probably where I'll order from.

Of all the vids I've watched I like the Bugera 6260 or the 1990 the best as far as the tones I'm looking for.
I want to be able to work on Tube amps and SS amps one day as a means to some income and If I don't own a tube amp How am i going to learn?

Also I'm not opposed to buying used if anyone runs across one in need of a minor repair then that would be great too.
Nightrain Cool Cool Cool
What songs have you learned recently or are learning now?
by milje on Fri Sep 04, 2009 8:28 pm
I've been on a Nuge kick for the past few weeks, I think it's because of hunting season coming up Laughing

Right now I'm learning Fred Bear and Stranglehold. I've somewhat figured these out before, but just screwing around. Now taking them more seriously, trying to learn them all the way through (I do pretty much all songs the same way, get the basics down, lose interest and come back some time later and get it, especially the leads I never get those on my first go-around). Still haven't decided if I like Fred Bear on the dirty channel or the clean channel, or where exactly I want to switch between the two. It sounds good a few different ways, I hate having to choose Laughing

I also want to work on Mississippi Queen.

So what are you guys learning right now, or have learned lately?

Bassist/clean vocalist I.C.S. Vortex has left Dimmu Borgir Sad Sad

No more epic clean vocal parts Sad

oh and the keyboard player also left but I bet no one really cares about him....

The clean vocal parts in the Dimmu Borgir songs were my favorite part and he did such a good job at them. Anyone else sad about his departure from the band?

Trade?
by Lon on Sat Sep 05, 2009 11:35 am
What do you guys think of these trade offers? I think they're all really good offers but just can't decide.... First is my Strat, it's a 93 MIM, Chrome Red with a chrome metal guard loaded with EMG SA pickups. Needless to say she plays great. First offer is an Epiphone plain top LP Standard with the JB/59 combo. Gorgeous IMO, can't go wrong here. Next is a Classic Series Fender Esquire, dead mint. Also can't go wrong here. Finally is one of the Platinum Hardtails. Another good deal. What do you think? Not sure I'm going to take any of them, just looking for opinions.

PRS or a LTD V200
by Vermillionblood89 on Sat Sep 05, 2009 6:49 pm
hey there..

i was wondering whether a PRS SE Custom 22 would be better than an ESP LTD V200 ... since both cost about the same...

the prs 450$ and the ltd 470$..

by the way.. the PRS has a wide fat neck.. (at least thats wat is written on their website.. dunno wat is means)..

and i my taste is heavy, power, speed, death metal... heavy crunchy riffs, fast n sweet solos...

i mainly worhsip children of bodom, Pantera, Opeth, Arch Enemy, Megadeth....

thanks guys

Which one is the best and if I buy one, will I hear a noticable difference in my sound? I play through a line 6 spider 3 with a dimeshadow W/ Dimebucker bridge.

Best Band Thread
by BillPalmer on Mon Sep 07, 2009 4:16 am
Tell who you think the best band is and why. I'll start: PANTERA! They were by far the best heavy metal band ever and their music still owns all today. They could go from in your face metal to clean, calm, stuff like suicide note part 1, this love, planet caravan (yes I know its a cover), cemetery gates; the list goes on but you get the point.

Help me fix up my Double-neck
by bazzabalboa on Mon Sep 07, 2009 8:01 pm
Razz

Hey dudes, im now back at school and after having a rather hectic end to the summer and start of the school year, i am now gonna finally fix up this Double neck.

Planned mod's

Straighten necks
New Pups
New Switch's
New Bridges, the saddles are ruined, need a new tune-o-matic bit, the stop bar bit is just fine!
New wwwwwiiiiiiiidddddddddddeeeeeeeee strap so that i wont sever my shoulder, share the weight.
Perhaps relocate the top stap button to help cure the neck diving (stoopid sg Laughing )

And here's a question! I have been playing the 12string neck for a while, and i dont use it as much as the 6 string neck. I would love to make this guitar a 6/6, so i could have say... 2 tunings? Razz

Is that possible?

First things first, getting the neck straigtened and buying new bridges. How do i know id the bridge will fit the double neck? Are their differnt size's?

Im hoping to get a load of responces so i can start work this weekend Razz

Cheers,
Baz

Just this afternoon I recieved my new ESP LTD George Lynch Tiger, and I'll not waste any time and get to the point; this guitar KILLS. Seriously kills.

I'll admit that at the start I was a bit skeptical about how the neck would feel and had plans to swap the neck for a Warmoth wizard profile one if I didn't like it, but the second I got my filthy mitts around this babe all apprehension was dispelled. It's a lot rounder a weeny bit fatter than the Wizard necks I'm used to, but surprisingly it doesn't actually feel very different at all, it has the exact same response, wicked sharp playability and feeling of complete control that the Wizard has and it absolutley RIPS! There's not a dead spot anywhere on the neck, it's smooth as a babie's arse and the frets are very cleanly done. Speaking of frets, did I mention the fact they're like little nickel mountains? They're honestly the biggest frets I've ever encountered on a guitar, and I love them!
The Floyd Rose Special seems solid and holds tune well, I didn't have to adjust the tuning or the intonation in the slightest right out of the box and it still stays strong even with a lot of whammy abuse.
The single ESP humbucker holds up pretty well, I'd say it's about average for a stock pickup but I'm gonna swap it out for a PAF Pro anyway.
This guitar's actually the lightest of all my guitars, a lot of people would grumble about it being light, but I really love it, it feels a lot more "movable" than heavier guitars. I also like guitars to be light and have thin necks so I get the feeling of complete control over the guitar, I don't like to have to wrestle with a guitar to get what I want out of it.
The hardware on it is that black chrome stuff, which again people seem to hate, but I'm not really too bothered about it - it's there, it does the job and if it tarnishes or rubs off, well a little extra mojo never hurt anyone! The paintjob is, of course as you can see, in true Lynch fashion and absolutley flawless. I think Dean players of all guitarists can appreciate a guitar that turns heads, and if this doesn't make you do a double-take then God know's what will.

I've naturally included mandatory pr0n, and over the weekend I'm gonna video a cover of Mr Scary with it for my Youtube debut, so you'll get to see it and hear it in action, provided my arse phone camera doesn't mess things up too much.
Overall I think it's a great guitar that definatley punches it's weight in its price category, and possibly even above it. I couldn't be happier with it and isn't that the most important thing? Very Happy

New Pelican case should fit guitars
by Jag Panzer on Tue Sep 08, 2009 7:49 pm
Pelican has a new case coming out - the 1770.

Although a guitar like a Soltero will fit in the smaller 1720 case, this new case provides over 2.5 inches of padding for the widest part of the guitar. The rest of the measurements - depth and length are both pretty roomy.

The total linear measurement is a little over 87 inches with a weight of 36 pounds. Load that with a heavy guitar and you're still under 50 pounds. The 87" size is under the 90" limit for an airline like Continental.

The big question is how the guitar will fit within the foam. This may or may not be a deal breaker.

The 1770 looks to be around $360 street price. That's comparable to having a custom flight case made. I have several custom flight cases and my wife's Pelican camera cases blow them away. I've seen my wife's big case tumble down 2 flight of steps while carry camera lenses. No damage at all. My Army buddies used them in Iraq and Afghanistan and told me about all the abuse those cases took.

If I keep my U.S. spalted maple Soltero I may invest in one of these cases.

I got my Viper today I got in a trade. It plays great, I haven't been able to put it down since UPS dropped it off. It's honestly the second best import I've played. Right after my VMNT-1. Trust me on that one, I've owned a mess of imports. Also it's a rarity for me. Something not over pointy. Also rare because normally I get a guitar ever two or three months. This is the first one I've gotten in 6 months, so maybe I'm starting to beat my gas.

The pics are a little dark. I'll do better pron later. But here is enough to hold you all over for now.

Melodic doesn't necessarily mean it's not fast, it's just got more, well, melody to it. Anyway, here's mine. It's got so much emotion and feeling, and it's so well written.

Seymour Duncan Phat Cats
by Derivation on Wed Sep 09, 2009 7:44 pm
i was wondering what some of you fine folks of the dean forum thought about these pickups. i was originally going to get the duncan p-rails and turn my guitar into a tone chameleon of sorts, but i was mostly interested in getting a the P90. My playing is pretty ranged from classically finger picking stuff, to blues, to stoner/doom metal, and a couple spaces in between. I already have a guitar with really high output pickups so i'm not overly concerned with how well the phat cats can do thrashy stuff, i don't play much thrash these days anyways.

I know the easiest thing to do would be to go out and try out the pickups, only problem with that is i lack the transport to get me out of this town and from the stores i've visited i have not seen any guitar with phat cats in them.

Any comments on the phat cats would be greatly appreciated. I spent a couple hours reading reviews and listening to youtube clips last night, but there is a certain level of uncertainty that i get from reading reviews on harmony central or other sites because i dont know the people behind them, where as for some ungodly reason i trust certain members of this forums opinions.

Recommend Me Some Recording Software
by SolteroShane on Wed Sep 09, 2009 8:13 pm
So, I need recommendations... Very Happy

I've been wanting to really get into home recording for some time now and have found that while GarageBand is a really useful resource for some of the more basic things that I'd like something more "in-depth".

I'm really interested in picking up EZDrummer sometime soon to work with it, so that's qualification number one of a recommendation. It NEEDS to work with that program.

As for my computer specs...

I'm running a iMac G5 with...

- Mac OS X Version 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
- 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo [Processor]
- 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM [Memory]

PLease let me know if you need anymore information on my computer. Also, I'm currently using both my Line6 UX1 Studio for rhythm and my Peavey Vypyr 75 for leads.

Thanks!

Al-3000 vs Black Gold Z?
by fluffelz on Wed Sep 09, 2009 10:42 pm
Im buying a BC Rich soon, but after that i need help deciding on what guitar ill get after that. Im looking for a traditional looking guitar with a wood top (preferably quilted maple), neck binding, 24 3/4 scale, set neck and a fixed bridge, preferably with brand name hardware, too. Im deciding between the Agile AL-3000 (tribal blue quilt) and the Dean Black Gold Z. If you can recomend any double cut with the specs listed above for <$600, post away. So here are the pros, cons and similarities.

Similarities:
Made in Korea
All Mahogany
Figured maple top
Grover tuners
Set neck
24 3/4" scale
22 frets
Stock pickups
B/N/H Binding

Dean Black Gold Z: $649

Pros:
Gold HW
Probably higher quality
One of my favorite guitar shapes
Block inlays (personal favorite)
ITS A DEAN!

Cons:
Rosewood Fretboard
Costs more than the agile

Questions:
What neck profile is on it?
Are the body and neck balanced?
Are the frets jumbo?
Is the flamed maple just a veneer?

Agile AL-3000

Pros:
Ebony Fretboard
Arched top
Beautiful finish
Quilted Maple on top of maple cap (more brightness=good)
Only $400

Cons:
Les Pauls have poor upper fret access
Heard mixed reviews about agiles
5th guitar (out of 6 including bass and acoustic) to have chrome HW
Already have a LP

Questions:
Are the stock pickups on agiles any good?

Thanks for any help. I just want to plan ahead

Floyd Issues
by samschett on Thu Sep 10, 2009 12:03 am
So, I am having some issues with my floyd. First offm it is a liscensced dean floyd rose BUT these problems are like nothing I have heard of before. Also, I JUST got it back from the tech so this is kinda weird. Whats happening is that I will play some, and it will be in tune. Then I will lay my guitar on the floor, go take a piss or get a drink and then when I come back one string will be completely out of tune usually by at least one fret. Also, occasionally when I am playing I will do a bend, there will be a loud pop noise like the string broke and the string that I bent will be incredibly out of tune. Does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?
MAJOR DIMESHADOW PROBLEM
by BillPalmer on Thu Sep 10, 2009 1:01 am
Ok, at first I thought this was no big deal but its gotten really bad. I will switch to the neck to play something a little cleaner and I switch back to the bridge pickup (SH-13), and theres no sound. I have to switch back to the neck then back to the bridge again a few times to get it working. Its been happening alot lately and its freaking me out. I went to play my guitar today and when I swithed to the bridge pickup, It sounds identical to the neck pickup! WTF is wrong! It cant be a colder soldering joint because that was happening with the stock bridge pickup in the guitar. So could it be the pot or the switch itself? PLEASE HELP!

Need opinions on Peavey Valve King Head VK100
by Andro on Thu Sep 10, 2009 11:36 am
On the continued episode of "andro is scanning everything on the market for a new rig and is still undecided", this head came into my radar for its very, very low price. I've checked youtube vids and so on but most are of poor quality.
It would be used with a Marshall SE 100 power attenuator I got off ebay for home use and recording and an effects racks including an equaliser and hush. Will likely be played with my viper ESP.
Primary music I want to be able to play is C tuned folk metal but being able to vary genres is a bonus.

Buying this for the same cost as an Engl preamp saves me the price of the power amp.
Any opinions from users here ?

Edit: and no, my local shop doesn't have one

picked up a DD-6 yesterday
by Anonymous on Thu Sep 10, 2009 4:13 pm
well yesterday i went to check out the guitar store and saw a used DD-6 80 bucks and i could not pass it up.
so i went home and got all my money which was $82 and i rushed over because they where going to close in
20 minute and i got there with 5 minutes to spare. i get home and i print out the manul and try out the suggested
settings. i thought it was going to more like a echo but im still working with it. the coolest part is that if your a Dime
fan and you really like that doubling affect, this pedal will work with two amps. i sounds amazing when your in stereo
it really makes the signal fatter and meaty-er. i like buying new pedals, i gives me more interest in playing.

and it eats through more batteries than my NS-2
3 batteries since i got it
Favorite Burst Finish?

Pretty self explanitory, which burst finish is your favorite? I've been looking at different ones all day (planning something very soon Twisted Evil ), and I thought I'd get other people's opinions on this.

Lately I've been having major GAS for anything Silverburst. Something about that finish is just so damn sexy. Although Chris' new USA Model T has a pretty hot Caribbeanburst.

Bill Lawrence Joins Lace Music
by Graunke on Fri Sep 11, 2009 12:59 am
**From Premier Guitar Magazine**

Huntington Beach, CA (September 10, 2009) -- In a stunning joint announcement nearly a decade and a half in the making, pickup design and manufacturing legend Bill Lawrence has teamed up with Jeff and Don Lace of Lace Music Products to build all future Lawrence-designed pickups at the Lace factory in Huntington Beach. Effective immediately, Lawrence's current Keystone and Wilde products as well as all subsequent Bill Lawrence designs will be built and shipped from the Lace facility under the direct supervision of the Bill and Becky Lawrence and the Lace brothers, who anticipate significant improvements in technical innovation, quality control, and delivery time.

Bill Lawrence stated that, "It's been some fourteen years since we first discussed working together with Jeff and Don -- we have always had so much in common. While most of our industry has been focused on merely recreating the past, we've both both been working on new, original ideas to advance the art and science of the pickup. Over the years, we've developed a close friendship and mutual respect based on our common principles, but until now the time for a joint venture never seemed quite right."

"Given my current health issues," Lawrence continued, "Becky and I maintaining our own production facility was no longer feasible, and a partnership with our old friends has become the logical way for me to continue my design work and bring my latest ideas to fruition. I simply can't imagine better manufacturing and marketing partners than the Lace family and their team -- both companies have established their own unique places in the market, each with very different design and marketing approaches that I'm sure we can maintain side by side into the future. It's a classic win-win situation for us, our distribution channels, and the pickup buying public."

Jeff Lace, who has succeeded his late father Don Lace Sr., as Lace's lead designer, said, "This is a remarkable opportunity for our companies -- not only will we continue making the best pickups on the market today, but we'll also be expanding our product portfolio with more original designs that are unlike anything else available."

Both Lawrence and Lace hold numerous technology patents in the pickup arena, with Lawrence's design work dating back some 60 years including historic stints with giants like Gibson, Framus, and a virtual who's who of the guitar industry, and Jeff Lace following in the footsteps of his father's unique "Fender-Lace Sensor" design dating from the early 1980s. More recently, Jeff has created Lace's Holy Grail and Alumitone pickup technologies, both featuring zero noise and full-range bandwidth. Lawrence, known for decades as the industry's most dynamic and knowledgable pickup designer, is responsible for the SCN (Samarium Cobalt Noiseless) line of pickups currently offered by Fender both in their prestigious American Deluxe guitars and basses and as popular aftermarket upgrades.

"Bill has established a great legacy of design innovation that we will honor and continue just as we've carried on our father's wishes and aspirations," Jeff Lace declared, "We've been looking forward to working with Bill and Becky for a very long time -- and together we have so many exciting ideas that we can't wait to bring to the market!" Don Lace enthusiastically pointed out good omens for the new venture by noting, "This year marks Lace's 30th anniversary -- and what a way to celebrate our success, with the introduction of our new Helix bass and guitar plus this monumental new pickup partnership happening simultaneously. This is going to be a truly exciting year for us and the industry!"

More people should frequent the tiki. Its always the same 4 to 5 people in there every time I go in. People always say they build friendships here and as many members that we have and as many people that want to be heard so much , you should visit the tiki more. You know there's more to arguing over what gear Dime bag had, how to set your PQ3 and what beer he brushed his teeth with or used in his fruit loops.

bought some pedals, and power supply question.
by redneck on Fri Sep 11, 2009 1:52 am
Well, i went shopping today. was looking for a good multi effect, but couldn't find any i liked. they all SOUND like multi effects units. I didnt come home empty handed though

picked up a digitech hardwire delay, a boss digital reverb, and a EH small stone. all used.

The delay is awesome. really great sounds, have had time to try the loop function much, but its cool. tap tempo and true bypass. I was immediately impressed with this one.

the boss reverb is really good, too. though not quite as warm as an actual reverb tank, but far more versitile, and the modulation function makes for some really great sound.

you'd really be suprised how much a little delay and reverb can do for your tone. I have an old digitech rp7 that i had been using, but having good stompboxes just sounds sooo much better.

The small stone is such a neat sounding pedal, that i couldn't pass on it for $40. Really lush sounding, but not very subtle. really simple: a rate control and a 2 position "color" switch. I like to have just a touch of phaser on my cleans, but you cant do that with this pedal. I tried several phasers, and it seems that no one makes a decent one with a level or mix control. I only found one that had a level control, an ibanez, and it sounded relly weak and thin.

any ways, on to my question:
I bought an Ispot power supply to power all my new toys, which it does with one exception: my crybaby. as soon as i engage the wah, the sound just dies, but if i unplug the supply from the wah, everything works fine. what am i doing wrong? or is something screwed up?

What do I need to record with this

Computer?

I have this Dell laptop.

http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfh/notebooks/inspnnb_152x/pd.aspx?refid=inspnnb_152x&cs=22&s=dfh

I'm pretty sure that it's the AMD AthlonTM 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TK-55 one, I am not on it at the moment.

I am not a fan of computers. I am not very computer literate, I can check e-mail and post on this forum... Laughing

I know I need an audio interface, possibly upgrade my sound card, and software.

I don't want anything too expensive and I don't want a program with a bunch of amp modelers and all that stuff.

Basically, all I want is a simple set up to mic my amps, guitar and bass, with a Shure SM57 and record, maybe something that would be drum program friendly so I can get one to add some drums.

What kind of interface should I get, aren't there ones with built in sound cards?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Here it is. I just got done getting familiar with it. Absolutely stunning. And heavy! The tone is superb, and I love the nostalgia paired with the LWMOT.

Slight finish blem on natural binding, otherwise in great shape. Very happy. Opted for no pickup covers in my version. Enjoy!

More pron to follow after tomorrow nights' gig. It's getting a workout then I'll give a better review.

any reviews of the dean stealth
by BLOODROOT on Sat Sep 12, 2009 3:06 am
are they pretty much a razor back with stealth body or better worse or different

curious cause i played a couple razorbacks at gaytar center and they were the worse guitar ever. but they may have been the china ones or something.

anyone play or own one.

i dont care how it compares to the washburns. I owned the usa and the import washburn stealth before so lets not go there please. I dont care if your washburn is amazing.

that is the pedal in question. i have a vague understanding of what to do with it, but seriously, how does it work as far as adjusting frequencies?

and why does everyone favor adjusting the slides to the "frown" configuration?

i read that it boosts the signal as well as db but im not really sure what that means in a practical sense.

Bought a little Blackstar 5w head.

I'm in love with it so far and it actually works compared to my Crate.

Playing it through my Crate combo's 2x12's and it sounds great!
Might get me an actual cab later on, but this will do well for a while.

My Metal Muff sound's great with it as well.

How can you tell if a finish is nitro?

The finish on my U.S. spalted Soltero is a little different. I asked my buddy at Dean yesterday about it and he said he's fairly sure it's a nitro finish.

Is there any way to tell?

Excuse the crappy pic and messy room, lol.

Sounds AMAZING! Anyone looking for a Grade A, Small size, gig-able amp should definately look at these. I tried the combo too, which was also very nice, but I much preferred the stack.

That's all. I'm gonna go play it some more Cool.

by guitarist1993 on Sat Sep 12, 2009 6:56 pm
So a guy who plays with the youth band I went to today said he was looking for an amp like the one I had (30 watt Roland cube). He had a Crate GFX212. I jokingly said, "trade ya" and he was like "Sweet, sounds awesome!"

So all in all, I traded a 30 watt practice amp for a decent gigging size 212 combo. I think I'll trade him back though, I miss the headphone capability. But still, not bad.

Decent amps with headphone capability?
by guitarist1993 on Sat Sep 12, 2009 10:25 pm
I got rid of my little practice amp today, and now I realize that I kinda miss using headphones for quiet practice. I'm as stoked as everyone for the 6505+ combo, but does anyone know if it will have headphone capability? I seriously doubt it.

So are there any other decent sized amps that could be giggable, while still having the headphone jack? Thanks in advance.

by unscarred666 on Sat Sep 12, 2009 11:58 pm
got aggravated learning a song the other night, so i put down my guitar and was listening to music and started listening to some nirvana for some reason. it kinda gave me a little relapse to when i first started playing guitar. well i started playing along with all of it and realized it was 2 hours later and i felt a little better. i think this is a good release for getting frustrated with something on guitar, just go back to some basics and relieve it. i actually forgot how fun it was to play some good ole nirvana.
Ernie Ball Slinky Acoustic strings
by rzbk 777 on Sun Sep 13, 2009 2:33 am
Just put a set on my acoustic, been wanting to try them out. I use the Slinkies on my electrics so I thought they were worth a try. I like using coated strings on my acoustic since it doesn't get as much play. I usually use Elixers, but these feel smoother and you can't feel the coating. I tried Cleartones and was disapointed, especially for 20 bucks.

New Clip: Pantera's "Floods" solo section.
by WH on Sun Sep 13, 2009 9:14 am
So the kids are in bed, and I got a few hours to whip up a new clip. I got a new preamp the other day, and wanted to try it out for some lead stuff. I'm pretty happy with how it sounds, and I keep finding better and better tones with it.

So like a lazy icehole, I recorded a cover instead of working on anything original. Laughing The "Floods" solo is a personal favorite of mine. I've always loved the layers, and double stop licks. Dime was always so great at doubling leads, so I did my best to cop those sounds.

I think the drum sounds have gotten a bit better, so I'm looking for advice overall on the mix and such. I finally tried adding a little compression to the drum aux, and I like the results so far. Added a little compression to the bass this time as well.

Anyway, enjoy it for what it is.

amp suggestions...
by soliloquy on Sun Sep 13, 2009 4:38 pm
so, i sold my line 6 spider II amp coz i got bored and annoyed by it.

now i'm looking for a lil tube amp and dont really know where to go.

i'm looking for around 20ish watts, reverb, and a creamy tone like andy simmons/neil zaza, but on a budget for around 350ish. would like it if its less..

amps i'm interested in:
crate V 18 or v 15
bugera v 22, but i'm hearing a lot of mixed reviews about it...
maybe a carvin v16 or maybe nomad, though its out of budget. so maybe a used one. but again, hearing extreme mixed reviews...

i'm hearing lots of good stuff about blackhart amps. no reverb, but i can fix that with a pedal.

and thats pretty much it. anyone wanna recommend something else? or give me a reason to stay away from the amps listed above?

Weber Mass 100
by formula73 on Sun Sep 13, 2009 8:25 pm
Any users? I noticed yesterday that my back up amp sounds pretty brutal at ridiculous volumes, so I picked up this attenuator. A lot of former Hot Plate users seem to love the Webers, quoting them as more transparent. They're cheaper, too, and cover 2, 4, 8, and 16 ohm loads. I'll let you all know how it works out when it comes in.

If you have any questions, I played a:

USA Soltero
Schecter 8 string Hellraiser LTD
Peavey 3120
ENGL Fireball 60w
ENGL Fireball 100w

Review #1:

USA Soltero - with a dull yellowish finish, no push/pull pots

Wow, what a great guitar. Nice and heavy, well balanced, best neck profile on the planet ( like my Washy 3 Cool ), great piece of ebony under my fingers. There was only one Soltero in the whole store, and I have yet to try one with the push/pull pots. The split coil option may make this the perfect guitar..., but I'll have to find one around here before I can say that for sure. Not my fav finish, as the wood grain was hidden on this one.

For the record, the Korean import Soltero (played one a month ago) is also very nice. If you're on a budget, the import will do just fine.

I was wondering if anyone here could possibly inform me on how to get the finish swirls off of my Soltero. I know that certain bumps and bruises are the sign of a well loved instrument, however, I really do try to keep my instruments in as pristine condition as possible.

So, what will it take? A certain polish? Good ol' elbow grease?

Help on choosing a cab for a Blackstar HT-5
by Plymouth58 on Tue Sep 15, 2009 7:30 am
I'm going to buy my first tube head any time soon. I decided to go for the Blackstar HT-5. Only problem is choosing a cab. My preference goes to the mini-stack with 2x 10" speakers, but I read some negative comments on those 10-inchers. Another alternative I considered is the Vox V112NT. So here's the question: what's the best choice for me for this amp? The matching Blackstar 110's(looks matter too Wink ) or the Vox 112 ? I don't gig or play in a band and usually play at bedroom volume, so would the difference between a 10" and a 12" matter THAT much for me?

Here are the specs for both speakers:

Vox V112NT:

1x12" Celestion/Vox Greenback speaker, 25 watts, 16 ohms

Blackstar 110 cabs:

I was at the MBK today and suddenly i standed right in front of a HUGE music store.

I would not have bothered if it had not said the words MESA ENGENERING on the outside.

Really suprised i walked in, and s#%t!
All the Mesa heads were there!, and i mean everyone!!

And the prices... well.. an Average Mesa head in Sweden rus for like 20-35 000 sek, and here i could buy one for 10 000!!!

All i have to do is to bring it over the border to Malaysia, and put it on a container ship!

Really tempting actually, but maybe the warranty is not so great when your back on the other side of the globe...

Still REALLY tempting!

OK, this is officially driving me nuts.

Has anyone got a tab for this?

I've been trying for ages, but it's so distorted I just can't be sure if a D is a D# or a D# is really a D etc (this makes sense in my head!).

I think I'm really close, but there's bits I just can't seem to get low enough on, yet I think it's in B standard, not A. I've been training my ear, but I think this one is just that little too distorted for me to pick out the right notes with confidence.

In case anyone who doesn't know the tune wants to scope it out, you can get it on Spotify (legally).

Incidentally, greets to all the older guys that are still posting here Very Happy I feel like I haven't posted in aaaagess...

I'm not a fan of the single cut guitar style, but have been an Ace fan since I was a kid in the 70's. The blueburst/silver sparkle MiJ Epiphone Ace signature guitar is one I would love to have. I've seen 2 on Ebay in the last 5 or so years....and they are crazy expensive.

Here is a picture I found elsewhere, not sure if this is a new Gibby sig model, or a one off custom thing. Looks nice though.

Christain pop hardcore techno dance core.
Its like Olivia Newton John meets Poison meets Russ Parish's Metalschool or whatever they are called.

Sad thing. I Like all these catchy chorus singing bands. I's so sick of tune to low z. scream about death and satan with pitch transposer to the lowest possible setting. The guitarist aint shabby either. But lets all get ready to hate it cause it is different. If you like it, I guarantee you feel dirty for it. ahahahah

Ozzy wanted a change so he hired Gus G. Gus is an amazing player, and although I am a huge Zakk fan and he will always be my favorite, I fully support Gus. However this is bothering me. Notice a problem here?
No it's not that Gus is playing and Eclipse. I could care less about that.

TC G-Major 2. Yay? Nay?
by Spite on Wed Sep 16, 2009 3:09 am
I'm in the market for a multi-FX rack unit right now, and people have been praising the old G-Major quite a bit. The new one is supposed to be even better, but has anyone on here actually tried it, or own it?
I couldnt find any pictures of the back, but I assume it still has the 2 relay outs, which I also need.
I want to be able to replace the need for pedals with a single rack unit and a midi board. I like to keep it simple.
So, what is the verdict on the GM2?
Help Me Choose a New Pickup Set!!!
by classic_rocker978 on Wed Sep 16, 2009 1:36 pm
I want a really Modern sound, but not harsh. Sort of a shred sound but the pickups needs to do more than just metal.

My current Thoughts:

X2N/Tone Zone

Fred/Humbucker From Hell

Steves Special/Paf Pro

Those are the current combos off the top of my head... Im not into "Booteek" pups either..

Only ever been a Dimarzio Guy but 'm open to SD pups as well, I just dont know them very well.

I love the vocal quality of a dimarzio. I want a really clean sounding pup.. not muddy, Tight and modern yet fat and singing.

Gonna go in a Les Paul.. Mahogany body/neck... etc..

I play metal, shred, a lot of melodic metal.. no hardcore screaming stuff.. for that I'd just get Emg's.. heh Very Happy
Building a guitar, looking for complementry pickups to go in
by buhlig on Wed Sep 16, 2009 2:31 pm
I already know that I am going to be using Dimebag Darrell - DimeTime pickups for the neck, but Im not sure what would pair nicely with them for bridge pickups... I have heard a few people suggest Seymour Duncan SH-PG1 Pearly Gates as the bridge pickups.

Any other suggestions... Im looking for a sharp sound to play hard rock/metal but clean enough to play anything...

This will be going into a custom body similar to the Black Bolt ML.

Any help will be appreceated
IDK which to choose...
by EJAWD on Wed Sep 16, 2009 4:45 pm
Hey all, I am currently selling one of my guitars in hopes of finally getting a Dean ML or MLF. I have 2 in mind and am having a hard time choosing which i should maybe go with... First one is the Blueburst ML and the other is a Transbraz. 79' MLF with OFR. I currently have a les paul and a Schecter Hellraiser with an OFR so i know how the two are with and without a floyd. My question is which ML do you think is better for my playing style and better in overall quality? I play metal/rock and am not great at shredding and dont use the floyd as often as i should i guess, but IMO floyded ML's look so much more badass... I do however like the classic look of the Blueburst. Its a hard choice for me to make lol... I know that in the end, the decision is mine but i was wondering if anyone could help sway my decision for the best choice...

If you think theres something else I should look at, let me know... Im looking mainly for ML's though...

Calling all luthiers: Regarding fretboard dyeing
by AhsanU on Thu Sep 17, 2009 12:52 am
Sup guys.

I purchased a lefty guitar because my sister wanted to learn to play. And since she gave up on it I decided to just keep it to learn how to solder on/screw around with.

Anyways, I took apart the neck and decided to dye it. The fretboard was already dark rosewood, but I wanted to see how black I could get it. So I got a couple of bottles of dye from steward-mac and went ahead and tried.

Needless to say, I failed massively. There's still dye on it, I didn't dry it right, etc., and I obviously don't want to touch my Dean's with the dye.

So I'm asking you guys - is there a luthier amongst us that can do this sort of job professionally? I want the fretboard completely ebony (I just love the way it looks) without the dye leaking on the actual body of the guitar.

If you can do this sort of thing, or know of someone that you personally trust, please let me know. If I do end up dyeing the fretboard it'll probably happen around winter, because I've got a few things I'd like to buy first.
Safe way to polish frets, and what about chrome corrosion?
by JeffreyRyanSmoots on Thu Sep 17, 2009 1:04 am
Is there a safe way to polish frets? My MSV's frets have some green going on that's really bugging me. I store the guitar in the basements, so stuff's getting corroded and icky. (Gotta find a new place to store guitars, or maybe get a de-humidifier)

I just don't know a way to get the frets happy again, without hurting the fretboard...I've heard people use steel wool, but that is just on the frets, right?

Any help much appreciated!

Second question: If chrome parts have pits in them (corrosion), are they a lost cause? I mean, I don't know how 'deep' the chrome plating is on guitar parts. If I polish like hell, will I be able to rub out the minor corrosion, down to shiny chrome again? Or do I just need to get new parts?

I've always been a rhythm player and that's about all I've needed to do. The band i just started is much better then anything I've ever done so I'm in need of at least some lead chops. What solos could i learn just to start on my path to decent lead playing. The band i just started is total throwback thrash so anything in that vein that won't bend me over would be great Laughing
NGD: ESP/LTD Viper
by rridner on Sat Sep 19, 2009 12:32 am
it has arrived! been wanting to get a new Viper for a while now and I finally did it. feels good to have one again. this is not a brand new guitar by any means - you can tell this was the previous owner's "go to" guitar. it has some wear and tear but nothing too major. couple chips on the headstock and a few spots were the satin finish has become glossy. that is normal on a satin finish guitar that gets used a lot. it feels and plays great, just like the 400 series I had before. the LTD imports are great guitars. I am really digging the look of this guitar - satin + ebony = Cool that's a big part of why I bought it, this is one of two LTD Vipers that comes with an ebony board - that I know of anyhow. it would look better without the model name on the 12th fret, but what can ya do?!?! all in all, I am happy. great player with a Coffin case at a helluva price....can't really complain about the minor stuff wrong with it. amazingly, I am even liking the way the EMGs sound in this beast....weird, huh?!?! onto the PRON!

Any one own a Michael Kelly Hex Deluxe Axe? this Axe seems to good to be true but I doubt I'd be able to find out for myself seeing as there is no MK dealers in or around town. If you own one of these guitars then please let me know how nice or not so nice it truly is in person, seems to be high quality from what I can see but you never know til you try'em out.

Also, does any one know the exact neck profile this Axe has? All I can find as far as neck profile description is "fast and flat", which doesn't really tell me much.

Its a Korean import that sells for only $699.99 and apparently it has a real Maple Top not a veneer.

Hey guys! So I was reading that some schecter guitars had issues with the placement of the tuning machines.

Check this forum here to see what I mean:
http://www.sevenstring.org/forum/sevenstring-guitars/60955-ngd-fail-schecter-blackjack-atx.html

you can see how on the different pictures of the blackjack ATXs that on some the tuners are too far to the left or too far to the right and some are even touching into the binding.

Now I know 1 or 2 of you guys on here have an Blackjack ATX so I was wondering if you could post up a pic of what your headstock looks like...

That forum I posted above was from 2008 so I hope they would have fixed this issue by now.

I have a Schecter Blackjack ATX on order... not too late to cancel it though.

Zakk Wylde to possibly lose his Gibson Contract?
by WyldeDime on Sun Sep 20, 2009 12:36 am
And the hits just keep coming for the Wylde Camp.

Some of you may have seen me post that I have a friend that works at Gibson. I was just talking to him about scoring me one of the Outlets Mega sale guitars and Zakk Wylde came up. He told me that the word around Gibson is that Zakk may lose his contract.

The biggest reason Gibson is with Zakk is because of Ozzy. If he is not with Ozzy anymore, BLS is just not big enough for Gibson's taste. Right now, nothing is being said or done because his contract isn't up yet and no one really knows if Zakk is in or out.

Nothing is set in stone and most is just rumor that is flying around. When Zakk's health improves and more is known about his status with Ozzy, then we will see...

We may get to see Zakk with Dean after all.

I wanna get a custom dean... but dont know how.
by astrosaki on Sun Sep 20, 2009 3:22 am
when I went to Eddie Carlino's website earlier today and stumbled upon this:
http://www.carlinoguitars.com/DeanCustomShop.html
I was ecstatic! the options, the possibilities, the quick build time it was almost too good to be true... and it was.

He's only doing zzz guitars now so I wonder where can I get a custom dean made? Is anybody else able to get customs made like eddie used to? is it possible in the near future dean could have a custom shop orderform on their site like esp?

I was thinking about just going to the warmoth site and doing one there but its not the same.. i just wanna rep Dean and create the perfect guitar. Help!
David Gilmour vs the Rest of the World
by Graunke on Sun Sep 20, 2009 4:00 am
Gilmour can get more music and soul out of one bend than any shredder on the planet. And if he teamed up with Billy GIbbons, the double stops and octave bends that they could play would destroy all things shred in about 2 measures.

Let that be a warning to all of you.

Need advice on rack unit.
by Andro on Sun Sep 20, 2009 1:26 pm
Next episode of "I'm planning my rack but still don't have all the money and yes I'll post pron when I have gotten all of it."

today's subject is....the rack in itself.
I'm planning 12 U, not that I'd need all of them but I don't wanna be caught short if ever I win a lottery or something.
Basically what's planned for now is:

Power distribution: 1U
Sound card: 2U
Marshall SE 100: 2U
Whatever multi effect I decide on: 1U (likely Gmajor2)
Preamp: 1U/2U, depending on how much money I get
Power amp: 1U/2U depending on money too
Likely 1U for a hush
Likely 1U for an EQ or sonic maximiser

So I'll likely fill those 12U one day. whay unit would you recommend, knowing that I don't live in my home country and am susceptible to go back one day, and I'll likely get some gigs soon© so I need a moving stuff, not studio racks.

So far Gator GR-12 seems nice for the price, but I'm also thinking of going 2X6 for ease of transportation.
What are you guys using and can recommend ?
Finger/hand health?
by Recklessnative on Sun Sep 20, 2009 4:42 pm
There is no better place imho to ask this question!

What do you guys do to preserve the health of your fingers and hands? Because when I was doing my daily warmp up ritual (running through the major scale starting at 120 bpm up to 200 bpm) I started noticing a slight pain in the joint of my middle finger. So I immediatly stopped playing and let it rest. The pain is gone right now but it got me worrying. I tend to stretch my fingers each time before start playing so I was not aware of any harm..

Any tips/hints on how to keep my fingers flexible and injury free?

Mkay, I love this guitar.

It's my first Dean and I've owned it for 2 years now. With the Blackouts, an OFR and a proper set up - this guitar rips.

This cover of Rain by Trivium does the guitar no justice. After all it is just a recording. But plugged in through my Bugera it sounds really heavy.

But still, it's drop dead gorgeous and plays just as good as it looks.

Enjoy, it's my cover of Rain. Skip to 1:11 if you don't want to hear the intro.

Dean Forum Member of the Month
by brn14me on Mon Sep 21, 2009 4:22 am
There's been a lot of negativity around here lately. Alot of it I agree with.........but instead of jumping on the bandwagon I figured why not counter that.

Pick a member that you think has contributed to the forum and helps make this one of the coolest places there is on the interwebz. Just their name and a reason why. Doesn't have to be a long explanation, they don't have to be a DOA member, there is nothing formal about this. You can even put a +1 or -1 to someone else post. After a couple days I'll pick the top 5 and make it a poll.

I'll start.

SteroDeth. This dude is funny as hell. There are many days I get bored with this place but I can always find a cool post or something said that cracks me up. From Coco to the Dime tree, I definitely think StereoDeth is a positive influence on the board.

So what to you guys think? I paid $1000 like 8 years ago . I'm hoping it's worth at least that still. I want to fund a drumset so I'm probably going to be selling off unused gear and this hasn't been used for a while.

Song writing help, please...
by Dreadsin on Mon Sep 21, 2009 7:23 pm
For some reason I just cannot grasp song writing.
I am a relatively intermediate player. I know all my basic chords pretty well. I know the notes on my guitar decently (memorized E A D strings by heart, still working on the other two)
I know a few scales and I've been playing around with them, but it doesn't seem to be making anything that I would call "music"
The keys I've tried are
A minor
E rock scale
E major
E natural minor
G minor pentatonic (and my guitar teacher called it some sort of "evil" scale, it's something like 1 3b 4 5b 5 7b?)

It seems like I really understand the basic technical components in order to start playing music, but it really seems like I am missing something to make music sound really good.

So far I've really just been doing palm muting, power chords, and a few notes that really don't seem to sound right in the song. Occasionally I'll try bends if the next note is a whole or half step away.

What, exactly, is a good approach to song writing?
Is there some chord progression? Right now I only know the whole I IV V blues one. And that's really only helped me play acoustic guitar.
I kind of want to make some relatively evil or aggressive sound, by whatever manner works. I'll go for drop C if that's what is suggested.

The DGF Metal Jam From Hell!!!
by guitarist1993 on Tue Sep 22, 2009 4:36 pm
Well guys, with Ryan's blessing and permission, I present to you the Metal Jam from Hell Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

I offered to help him out with it, he said he'd appreciate it, so I'll get the ball rolling. Copied from a PM:

Quote:
The idea for this one I had was to have the forum compose a large piece all by themselves, simply by giving a key and a song structure.
For for instance, say the song structure is:

-Intro
- Riff A
- Lead A
- Chorus Riff A
- Chorus Lead A
- Riff A
- Lead B
- Chorus Riff A
- Chorus Lead A
- Breakdown riff
- Solo backing riff A
- Solo Lead A
- Solo Lead B
- Solo Backing Riff B
- Solo Lead C
- Solo Lead D
- Chorus Riff B
- Chorus Lead B
- Outro
- Outro Lead

I'd get everyone who wants in to pick a piece they want to write/play so one person writes one riff, one person write a lead, another a chorus etc etc and we'll pile it together into one massive opus.
It might sound a little complex but I think it could work. I'd also give out tone recommendations so everyone sounds a bit more cohesive.
Then we'd also get bassists, drummers and possibly singers in on it as well so the ENTIRE song is composed and recorded solely by forum members.

So if you didn't get that, I'll try to simplify: everyone who wants in will record their own riff. Once all the riffs are compiled and in order, everyone will pick a riff to solo over. Kinda like a potluck jam Laughing

I was thinking it would be good to keep the riffs in either the keys of E or D (I would assume minor, since this a metal jam). I prefer D, i think it's heavier.

I'll put my e-mail up later, I guess I'll be compiling this one.

As far as tone recommendations go, I'll just say that mids are good, since we will eventually have a bass on this.

And Ryan, if there's anything I got wrong, please tell me. This is your idea, after all Very Happy

Good luck guys, with any luck this'll the most awesome internet metal jam ever!

Now get off the computer and play your guitar!

Crazy (low) price on import Razorback for those interested
by PDogg81 on Tue Sep 22, 2009 5:31 pm
First off, let me disclose that I bought one of these guitars a month ago and may be a little biased, but I thought some (or perhaps even just one) of you may be interested in this deal. I'm assuming since it's discontinued that none of the dealers will be pissed that I'm posting this link, but if anyone has issue with it I'll remove the URL.

Razorback Shards
@ Amazon it's "Dean Razorback - Shard Graphic With Case"
$497.63 w/ free shipping and probably no tax

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GI5KYM

Basically you're getting a set neck import for not much more than you'd pay for the bolt-on Razorback DB Floyd. I couldn't really afford the one I bought last month for $600, otherwise I'd buy a backup Laughing .

Again, if I'm breaking any rules here I can kill the link, or just remove it so that people can look the guitar up on their own.

Either way, if you want to see some pictures of mine, check out this thread:

USA Dean ML's w/Floyds...why no model?
by Rip DEATH on Thu Sep 24, 2009 4:58 pm
I own the #121 USA Dean From Hell and the NAMM Prototype War Camo. They are amazing. I have been dying for a USA Dean ML with Floyd guitar line in basic colors like black, white, Burst, and Red.

What gives? why are there no basic USA ML's w/floyds with just a standard paint job? I love Dime, but I want my own guitar identity and not one of his chosen color designs.

The ML shape and neck are amazing, but the fixed bridge option sucks for many of us.

BTW, ebony makes those necks even faster!

black binding on an ebony fretboard is useless? its not even noticable and it runs up the price of a guitar. i'd be interested in getting an mhg z or ml sometime but id perfer white binding on the neck instead of black. opinions?
Non-Dean acquisition that has been a long time coming!

Literally! I've been after a 1997 58 figured top LP since, well... 1997! Laughing

The problem was... they really didn't make a lot of them that year. If you know anything about Gibson, they produced some really awesome "good wood" pieces in the mid-nineties. These are reasonably collectable and hard to find.

What an amazing sounding Lester with a beefy manly neck Wink A 58 reissue at it's finest.

Here she is in near mint condition.... ENJOY!

Oh man. How I have missed this band. Absolutely amazing.

If I wasn't playing in this hard rock/metal band, I would so be all over this kind of a gig.

It must be awesome to play with a full horn section. This stuff just oozes with groove. I am so jealous.

Thorn in my Pride is on the XM radio now. I just want to light one up and have a beer, and I don't even smoke anymore.

I thought I'd blacken my spalted Soltero for a change of pace.

Those are Baker Acts pups in there.

I'm on the fence about the looks of it -

I love the way it brings out the black lines in the wood. It really makes the top 'pop'.

On the negative side, it makes the guitar look a little close to lower end U.S. guitars like the MHG series and the old Gibson cheaper Les Pauls.
Godsmack
by zootallures on Fri Sep 25, 2009 12:03 am
Saw Godsmack at CrueFest and enjoyed the show immensely. They stole the show IMHO.

"Faceless" has been in the car CD for about a month, I am really enjoying the melodic rhythms and the way the lyrics work well with the music.

Sully is an intensely talented musician, beyond the guitar work his percussion interplay had everyone up and involved. Shannon Larkin was a monster on drums, Tony Rombola was solid with tone from hell, and Robbie Merrill, well, he plays Spector basses...and held the bottom end perfectly.

Interested in what the forum thinks about their music. BTW Sully stated a new album is coming in 2010.

Practice For The Picking Hand?
by deathgrind on Fri Sep 25, 2009 12:28 am
I just realized my picking hand is light years away from the fretting hand so I'm gonna start working on the picking hand. Im thinking of starting the metronome at 120 and doing 4 notes per measure with the fretting hand and 16th's with the picking hand. I'll go from the low e to the high e then back up to low e again. Ill basically run that up from the 1st fret to the 12th then back to the 1st. Anyone have any solid routines for keeping the picking hand up to snuff?
Have you..........

EVH Paint - Brawley / Pic
by Rex Herring on Fri Sep 25, 2009 4:30 pm
I don't know if anyone here heard of the Brawley guitars. Our local dealer handled them for awhile until Mars Music took them over and went bankrupt. They were very well made guitars and basses designed by one of Fenders designers. The designs have been introduced lately as Laguna guitars.

Anyway, I picked this one up on e-bay for $90 so I figured it's a steal. Now to wait and see what shape it's in. Looks filthy in the pic. Not that crazy about the red but a little masking and some paint could dress it up.

How does Pete Townshend get those noises in the beginning of the song? Is it a synthesizer? I tought I saw a band do it once without a synth. Is it a delay? Has it been tabbed out ever?

This has been bugging me lately. The tabs I've found on line are just the chord progressions, not the part I want to put on the guitar.
Announcement concerning Buckle Rash on guitars....
by Graunke on Fri Sep 25, 2009 9:26 pm
I am sick of nice guitars being ruined by buckle rash. In an effort to create awareness of this horrible situation, I have come up witha plan.

From now on, I am either going to :

a: Wear Zubaz

b: Go sans Pants.

I think I'll have to discuss it with the bar owners first, to make sure I'm not getting them in any trouble by letting the goods hang out, but I'm hoping if I show them pictures of some of the extreme cases of buckle rash on some of the guitars that are out there today, they'll understand.

Stop Buckle Rash today. Everyone do your part.

Letter/Number punches for serial #s
by slaytanic on Fri Sep 25, 2009 10:49 pm
As you know I am repairing an 81 ML and will need to restamp the serial numbers and made in USA on the back of the headstock. A fellow forum member was at Dean to see if the stamp were indeed the same size as the ones used on the vintages. Indeed he found out they are the same size which is 1/8th in. Unfortunately when he asked what brand they were, they told him they dont know. I have looked high and low and pages upon pages of stamps but cannot find a match for that exact font. Im fairly certain that Dean doesnt use the kind that you smack with a hammer to make the impressions and most likely use the kind with an automatic punch where all you do is press down where you want it and the spring loaded design tranfers the force needed without the use of a hammer.

Basically if any of you DOAers know exactly what type they use and where to get them so I can restamp my headstock, it will be much appreciated if you share the information. Dont worry, I dont plan on buying up imports and stamping them and selling them off as a USA.

So you know, there are plenty of sites that carry 1/8th automatic punches but they are cheaply made and not as precise as what Im looking for. SO if any of you know where to get the higher quality ones Im all ears.

"Decay" on a wah pedal poll
by bassmantim71 on Sat Sep 26, 2009 12:33 am
Just for fun,

I'll assume that a few wahs out there have this setting, mine does.

I can adjust how long it takes for the "wah effect" to turn off after I remove my foot from the wah pedal. It can be instant, long, or anywhere in between. Right now it's set at 12 o'clock, but I'm going to shorten it. I find when I let go of the wah after a solo, the effect remains as I go back to rhythm..., which does not sound kewl Confused

How do you dudes set / use yours?

Help Identifying Some Pickups
by shread_bringer on Sat Sep 26, 2009 1:07 am
There is a Marine at the Navel Hospital my dad works at that has been playing guitar since the late 70's. From time to time he finds little things in his closet and give them to my dad to give to me. I quite enjoy it when he gives me little things from back in the day. I've got a couple pickups from him now both I think are from the early 80's. He dated them on the back when he pulled them out of a guitar for the last time, both are dated 86, again I think, the little scratch marks are not very clear. One I'm sure is an Ibanez Super 70. The other one I just got today I'm not sure about at all.

Tube amp reliability issues.
by guitarist1993 on Sat Sep 26, 2009 1:22 am
How often do you guys need to have your amps re-tubed? My Kustom went to the amp doctor in January or February. He stuck new tubes in it, re soldered the entire thing, and it sounded better than ever. I'm having the same problem as last time, with a different cause.

As far as I know, the tubes were fine last time. All of a sudden, one day, the amp would start cutting out randomly, like there was a bad connection somewhere. I just disregarded it, until one day it finally gave a super loud blast of static, then died completely. Now, it's cutting out randomly again, but one of the power tubes is dead. I'm afraid of running it, I don't wanna make the problem worse, but could this be an actual problem, or is it just to be expected?

If this is an actual problem with the amp, I'm thinking of having it fixed again and using it till the 6505+ 112 comes out, then grabbing one of those.

Where is a good place to buy replacement tubes from?
another amp, another dissapointment.
by lordkronos187 on Sat Sep 26, 2009 5:34 am
i played a peavey 5150 2x12 combo at GC. and dont get me wrong this amp is very versitile, it just wont do what i want it to. not enough low end punch. no thump on a palm muted power chord ya know?

and something seemed off on the cleans. maybe im just too picky. or maybe its the 500.00 price tag. personally i wouldnt pay more than 200 for one of those.

all that aside i think it might be a great amp for other styles. maybe stuff less gain driven. i dunno.

next stop, the 5w blackstar ministack and a couple cheap marshall heads they got, i dont remember the models. well see whats what with those

Why are G3+ Randalls so expensive?
by Serbusfish on Sat Sep 26, 2009 11:20 am
I thought the G3 series where supposed to be relatively cheap amps, but ive just been scouring the net as im after a new combo and the prices seem to have gone up. The cheapest I can find the 100 watt combo for is £399, with the 200 watt combo costing £500, although I found a website selling it for £679! Considering I could pick up one of the new Peavey 6505 plus 112 combos for £435 the prices of these supposedly affordable G3's seems a bit expensive to me. I was hoping to get a 100 watt combo for around £300, but it looks like i'll have to settle for the 75 watt which is £299 (reduced price). If I had more dough it probably get the 6505 but I can barely afford the 75 watt G3 so unfortunately I cant. Does anyone know why these Randall's have shot up in price? Are the Plus model's really that much better than the original G3's?

Ordered at Thomann today the following:

Engl E530
TC Electronics GMajor 2
T-racks power conditioner
Lambda home rack case

To come next month because my porcelain pig had a limited amount of guts: a yet undefined power amp, a hush and a 2x12 cab. Will be able to use them with my Marshall SE 100, for now I'll use the dummy amp in the E530 to play it through my sound card and studio monitors.

UNRULY CHILD RETURNS FROM THE WILDERNESS:
The cat is out of the bag! A little earlier than was anticipated, but Marcie Free has come forward to announce that Unruly Child will return! Yes, Bruce Gowdy, Jay Schellan, Guy Allison and of course Marcie, will record a brand new studio album for Frontiers Records, to be released in 2010.
In a video message to fans, Marcie has shown her signing the new contract, viewable here:

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=63575703

And a text message posted reads: "To the best fans in the whole world. I'm just here to announce that it's official. Unruly Child has signed with Frontiers Records. All the original members have agreed to come together for another record. We're excited and wanted you to know. I made a video to commemorate the signing today September 26, 2009. It's in my videos if you'd like to see it. Hope to see all of you soon. Keep on Rockin!! Love, Marcie. xooxooxoxo."

I know this announcement brings forward as many questions as it does answers, so let me answer the biggest one. Yes, Mark Free had a sex change several years ago - most are well aware of this and have shown Marcie a great deal of respect for the courageous move. A Feature Interview with Marcie by myself can be read here:

www.melodicrock.com/interviews/marciefree.html

The next question is the voice - can Marcie still sing? Of course! You better believe it! I have been in constant contact with Marcie over the last 2 years and as recently as a few months back heard some vocal work that proves that Marcie has lost none of the magic and the voice is as strong and vibrant as ever! Despite the sex change, Marcie's voice remains exactly as we all remember Mark Free's incredible voice was in its prime. So there is plenty to look forward to with this announcement. Stay tuned for further updates soon.

Dean snakeskin stealth pickups?
by rxkid75 on Mon Sep 28, 2009 1:30 pm
So I just picked up a snakeskin stealth (import obviously) from amazon that they were clearancing out and it says it has a dimebucker & "dean" pickups. Anyone know if theses come with the dmt dimetime like the rb 10k or is it just a generic dean pickup?

Do these still take 1-2 years? Now that they have the shop going has the time reduced, at least for a more basic guitar (meaning, no fancy paint jobs)?

What a great example of playing with feeling and making a few basic notes sing.

I can't get a You Tube link up, since it's blocked at my office. Could someone help a brother out here?

Anyways... Great stuff. Absolutely amazing. They just don't make players or music like this anymore.
New US VMNT Almost Done!!
by dark_knight on Mon Sep 28, 2009 6:49 pm
My US VMNT Gears Of War is in the final stages of production in Tampa. I drove there on Friday thinking it was finished. It wasn't, but I was treated to a tour of the Dean facility. Kudos to the guys at Dean for turning my day around. I even met Elliot as I was leaving. He told me that this is only the second US VMNT GOW in existence next to Dave's original. Not sure why they put a black binding on it, but I think it looks pretty cool. One of the guys sent a pic to my email, but I'm not sure how to upload it here. It's a bmp file. Please advise and I'll try it again.

Whats a good acoustic amp?
by shread_bringer on Mon Sep 28, 2009 7:52 pm
I had a Senior meeting last friday and found out that I didn't need to come back next semester, I can graduate in January. So no need to tell me twice, I'm leaving then. But college still doesn't start until september so I needed somthing to do. Right now I'm thinking about going on tour, one band I know said they are working on putting together an acoustic tour and I could play guitar for them on that tour if it came though. So I need an acoustic amp. It's somthing I've been wanting to pickup for a while but never got around to. So even if the tour doesn't happen I still want one. Only problem is I don't know where to start. I think I want a 50 watter, maybe 2x12, but I think someone told me that most acoustic amps have 10" speakers? So what are the industry standard for acoustic amps?

New Ace Frehley Sig Model
by Doug Heffernan on Mon Sep 28, 2009 10:57 pm
Got this from an interview he did recently.

Gibson is releasing your new signature model guitar. What has changed?
The color for starters! [laughs] The first Ace Frehley Signature model from 1997 had the classic Les Paul Cherry Sunburst flame top with three crème humbuckers, gold speed knobs, and my old Kiss makeup on the headstock. The new one will be a Blue Burst flame top with three clear plastic humbuckers, clear speed knobs with blue lightning-bolts, and my new Anomaly graphic on the headstock.

I guess the blue sunburst he was pictured playing in an earlier thread is the new sig, sans the clear plastic humbuckers.
Another project guitar......
by goop on Mon Sep 28, 2009 11:39 pm
I wanted a guitar that I could pretty much do anything with, a total monster in terms of hardware and features yet not have to worry about fingerprints or scratching the finish. Most people think it's a beater until they look close.

Here's the rundown

Warmoth 22 fret compound radius neck with reverse headstock
Stainless steel jumbo fret on a scalloped maple fingerboard

Warmoth alder soloist body with heel contour. I slightly modified it for extra comfort and used an ESP neck plate. I also decided to attach the jackplate to the control cavity cover. No sense in drilling another hole when I had so much room left.

Hardware:
SD Hotrail
Dimarzio D-Activator
3 way toggle with bullet tip
1meg volume pot
PING Floyd Rose
Strat jack plate

The pup combination sounds pretty cool. In the center position it sounds like it has a fixed wah pedal on it.

http://www.deanguitars.tv/userpics/lib9b/Rob%20&%20Kirk.jpg

this is the only pic I took at the Down show in Libertyville over the wknd. the show was awesome & we had a great time. all the bands sounded great - Weedeater, The Melvins and of course Down! I think this was the least I have ever seen/heard Phil talk between songs. he dedicated "Lifer" to Dime and the whole place was chanting "Dimebag! Dimebag! Dimebag!" it was great! Dixie Dave - the vocalist/bassist for Weedeater was doing Pepper's tech duties - kind of cool & strange.....shoulda just had em fill in for Rex too! the venue was kind of strange, as were some of the folks at the show. people seemed/acted like they had never been to a show before - kind of stressed me out a little bit, but I got over it. the setup was kind of odd - there was a bar and then there was the room with the stage. there was a bar in the stage room, but the main bar area was completely separate. it was really annoying - you had to go through security EVERYTIME you went back & forth between the two rooms. it caused a lot of congestion in the connecting hallway. the bathrooms were on the other side of the security check point too - I don't think they thought this setup through very much. Jeff almost got kicked out before Down came on for I don't even know what - didn't seem like he did anything cos we were just standing there. later, the security guard apologized to em - I think maybe they thought he was someone else. not really sure though. this made me not want to take pix of the bands - I didn't know what the result would be. thought it better not to risk it after a 6hr drive to catch the show. sucks, but oh well. got to see my best friend, who lives in Chicago - that was a nice bonus for the trip. had a really good time. went with the Mrs & lowridin deanaholic. after the show - everyone was hanging outside in the patio/smoking area. met some cool people - burned with Jimmy Bower - BS'd for a while. he was rockin his EHG jacket, which was previously stolen - glad to see he got it back! this one dude I was talkin with looked just like the drummer from Killswitch Engage - it was crazy. our hotel was only two miles from the venue and somehow the taxi driver got lost. at one point, he turned the meter off & was on his phone speaking some foreign language.....I was totally paranoid from smoking cos I never do - I thought we were being taken off to die! at one point, I told Jeff to jump out of the car at the next stop light Laughing

good times!

This showed up on my doorstep on Sat, right before going to hang with BTMN and Corpse. I didnt have time to install and fire it up untill today, but Im highly impressed. With a external pedal and 2 channel swicther I can control all of my Amplitube products effortlessly. Not at all taxing on my CPU. This rig can just as easily be used live running through the clean channel of my amps. My AXE fx unit will be collecting dust. Peep the Youtube demo.

What is your local music scene like?
by Mosh Or Die on Tue Sep 29, 2009 8:52 pm
Mine is mostly a hardcore and death metal scene, there are alot of starting bands popping up here. also some pretty known bands in the belgian hardcore/death metal scene (A Trail Of Horror, locals but they are so good! checkout their myspace) there are around 8 venues in the region where i live, plenty of shows mostly local bands, but sometimes a bookingagency does something sweet with a big band or more than one with the oppurtunity for a few local bands to play in the support.

so how is your scene like?
US VMNT GOW Finished!!

Just got word that my US VMNT GOW shipped today. My rep at Dean sent me this pic of the finished guitar. The metallic paint used for the top really pops, and I think the black binding looks good too. If Chad is here, I may need assistance with this pic like yesterday. Let me know if I can send it along. Thanks.

So I was browsing through a pawn shop with no intention of buying a guitar, but when I saw this Fernandes Limited Edition Rhoads V, I had to try it. I think it's all original with the exception of the volume knob. Probably made in the late 80's I think. I really don't know anything about the guitar, but it plays great and was only around $100!
If anyone knows more about this thing, let me know!

ORANGE ROCKERVERB vs THUNDERVERB
by Killer Wooolf777 on Wed Sep 30, 2009 6:01 pm
Does anybody own or have experience with these amps? I'm thinking about selling my Randall head and buying one of these. I haven't been searching for tone in 2 years and the time has come for something different for the next Bluntguts album.

Right now I'm looking at the 50 watt rockerverbs because Ive always liked whatever sounds come out of them. But I'm curious about the thunderverbs because I don't think I've heard them. How do they compare? Would you say one has more gain then the other? Just want to get the characteristics before I start looking for Orange dealers around here.

Thanks

Building a pedal for a friend...
by Evil Panda on Wed Sep 30, 2009 11:29 pm
Bored, so I figured I'd post it here. I'm building these to raise some cash for a project, and to raise money to be able to make more complex pedals (PCB design and all).

This is all I got so far, but I'll update.

Image

Image

It's a true bypass/feedback looper pedal. The switch on the right is the bypass, and the switch on the left is momentary. The toggle switch switches between standard loop and feedback. The momentary switch temporarily engages whatever mode the toggle is not set to.

I had some... parts issues in this one. The components I thought would work better than the first one I built forced me to lay out the footswitches asymmetrically. Without knowing it, it's not that easy to tell when the footswitches are installed. If I do make any more of these (I probably will, since I really like them for my pedals), I'll go back to the method I used for the first one I made for myself. This one will work fine, though. The footswitches are the only issue.

Right now, I'm waiting to get a new LED and potentiometer. The pot (or "knob" for you guys) would control the intensity of the feedback.

Thought I'd share the process, even though I'd imagine none of you guys would be interested in this sort of pedal.
some help?

I know I could search but I know theres alot of metal fans who can help me pick good sources

I'ms doing a thesis paper on metal, I don't need to specify my thesis question yet, but I would like some good source suggestions.

- Sources that talk about bad press towards the music

- links to articles where the music is criticized, from any year and any rock n roll to metal genre. Like stuff from the PMRC

-And just damn good sources for heavy metal and rock n roll.

I just want suggestions. Films, Magazines, books, songs you name it.

So far I've purchased Sound of the beast and watched Get Thrashed (incredible documentary btw) and the history of heavy metal on Vh1.

Flame all you want as long i get a suggestion or two

New Dean Owner needs help/assistance/advice
by Anonymous on Thu Oct 01, 2009 12:15 am
My brother has a cheap Dean bass that I love. Most comfortable bass I've played in a while.

So, I bought a VMNTX... cheap, yeah, but I have a JB/Jazz set taht I'm gonna stick in it so that I can rock out without worrying about losing an expensive guitar. The thing is, it must be set up and play in tune. That shouldn't be too much to ask for a guitar that retails for $499....

Anyway, I bought it at Guitar Center and to my surprise, it did not come with an owners manual. So I went to the Dean website to download one. None there either. So, I emailed Dean and, to my dismay, I was told that Dean does not include owners manuals with their guitars. WTF???? My Jackson DKMG came with a manual that has all the stock setup specs listed to use as a baseline. The Dean specs are a huge ?????

So, how should I set this thing up for playability and intonation? I have a good idea that my nut slots were not cut for good intonation and I need to address this before I can play it... but I don't know what the factory spec at the first fret is. Nor do I know what the string height is supposed to be. Or any spec for that matter.

Even more strange is that I've searched this forum and the web and this info isn't available - anywhere! I see people referencing Fender and Gibson specs, but not Dean.

So what gives? How do you guys set up a VMNTX? I've heard that they are a great value and can play great - but mine hangs on the wall until I can keep it in tune across the fretboard. ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,

Ed
